Fraser Coast Regional Council has appointed an independent firm to conduct a comprehensive review and assessment of Fraser Coast Tourism and Events (FCTE).
Positioned as the external advisory body guiding the region’s Tourism and Major Events strategy, FCTE operates with significant local government funding—exceeding $1.6 million annually. In many respects, it functions as an extension of Council.
The funding agreement between the Council and FCTE is set to expire later this year.
In preparation for future arrangements, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has engaged external tourism consultants to conduct a comprehensive review, ensuring the Council receives the maximum value from upcoming funding agreements.
Many in the corporate and wider community have been perplexed by the lack of transparency surrounding the funds allocated to FCTE, seemingly without testing the market.
There is concern over why this opportunity has not been made available to other organisations through a tender process.
To my knowledge, Fraser Coast Regional Council has not engaged with any other groups since the inception of FCTE regarding the contract to undertake these crucial responsibilities.
This lack of open bidding has raised questions surrounding accountability, and whether the community is receiving the best value for money; and is there a belief that Fraser Coast Regional Council is happy to outsource the funds, but not happy to educate themselves about the other incredibly smart minds in their own community.
FCTE has faced ongoing criticism over its struggles in securing and maintaining local corporate support, having alienated larger sponsorship contributors through indifference and a lack of partnership engagement.
Concerns have also been raised about the handling of longstanding civic events and the outsourcing of major events without ensuring opportunities for local suppliers, which has inflicted deep wounds that only key changes can heal. A strategic overhaul has been long overdue.
The tourism landscape of the Fraser Coast has undergone a seismic shift over the past five years.
Once a quiet coastal retreat, Hervey Bay has surged in prominence—fuelled by the property boom and an influx of new residents and visitors. This momentum shows no signs of slowing, firmly positioning Hervey Bay as the region’s economic and tourism powerhouse, while Maryborough struggles to keep pace.
The Whale Watching Capital of the World is a title we continue to claim with confidence.
Thousands of visitors come to witness the breathtaking spectacle of humpback whales playing in the calm waters of the Great Sandy Straits Marine Park. Yet, despite this world-class natural experience, the Fraser Coast is at risk of losing its tourism grip, lacking the depth of attractions to keep visitors in the region.
It’s too easy to see a whale breach in the morning and then head straight to the theme parks, luxury cinemas, and expansive shopping experiences of the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.
This raises serious questions about how FCTE is positioning the region—because this issue hasn’t just appeared overnight. It has been brewing year after year, yet it seems we have
either failed to acknowledge it or chosen to ignore it.
The needs and expectations of families traveling with children have evolved significantly, and to suggest otherwise would be a misjudgement.
The caravan and drive market has emerged as a major economic driver for the Fraser Coast, aligning with its status as the fastest-growing tourism sector in Australia, according to Tourism Research Australia.
This surge in demand comes at a time when discussions are underway regarding the potential closure of select foreshore caravan parks—an issue that warrants a much broader conversation in the future and surely must include a rejuvenated FCTE.
Do we still need to market Hervey Bay and Maryborough as a joint destination, or has the gap between them become too wide? It is a heavily supported point of view.
Should we be investing heavily in traditional Visitor Information Centres when most travellers plan their itineraries online weeks in advance?
These are critical considerations.
The ongoing external review of FCTE must challenge long-standing strategies and evaluate whether the organisation is keeping pace with the region’s rapid transformation.
Senior executives at FCTE must ask themselves: Have I taken this as far as I am able?
As Hervey Bay ascends, it demands a modern, forward-thinking approach to tourism promotion—one that goes beyond legacy marketing tactics and embraces innovation.
This FCTE review marks a defining moment for the future of tourism on the Fraser Coast and surely a tender process must be a fait accompli.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude and admiration for the incredible talent we have right here in Hervey Bay.
From our thriving community theatre scene to our talented musicians, artists, and performers, it’s truly inspiring to witness such passion and creativity flourishing in our local community.
Having recently attended productions at Z-PAC Theatre, I was blown away by the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved, both onstage and behind the scenes, especially considering they’re all volunteers!
The ability of local actors, directors, and crew members to deliver world-class entertainment is a testament to the depth of talent we have in our region.
It’s not just the theatre, either.
Whether it’s live music at
our local venues, stunning artwork showcased at local galleries, or community events where creativity shines such as the local film festival that was held last year, Hervey Bay continues to amaze me with its wealth of artistic contributions.
I feel incredibly lucky to live in a community that supports and celebrates the arts.
Our local talent deserves to be acknowledged and appreciated for their hard work and for the joy they bring to so many people.
To anyone who hasn’t yet experienced the rich cultural offerings in Hervey Bay, I encourage you to get involved—whether as an audience member or by joining one of our many local groups.
Let’s continue to nurture and support the talented individuals who make our community so vibrant.
Thank you, Hervey Bay, for being such a hub of creativity and inspiration.
Dear Editor,
I just wanted to express how much I love the calm, safe beaches of Hervey Bay.
There’s something truly special about the gentle waves and the tranquil waters, making it the perfect spot for families, swimmers, and anyone who simply wants to relax by the sea.
Whether it’s a quiet morning walk along the Esplanade, discovering creatures when the tide is out or watching kids splash around without worry, our beaches are a treasure.
We moved here from the Sunshine Coast a couple of years ago and much prefer these calm waters and natural environment along the Esplanade, plus no unsightly highrises, thankfully!
The beaches in Hervey Bay are one of the many reasons I moved here and I’m proud to call Hervey Bay home. I hope others cherish and protect these beautiful beaches for everyone to enjoy well into the future.

AN UPGRADED aquatic centre in Hervey Bay, water treatment plant upgrades across the region, a new Hervey Bay Community Hub and a new recycling sorting centre in Maryborough are among the highlights of Fraser Coast Regional Council’s nearly $200 million capital works program this financial year.
Fraser Coast Mayor Geroge Seymour said record levels of new housing and commercial development approvals highlighted the region’s rapid growth, prompting Council to invest in essential community infrastructure to maintain and enhance the Fraser Coast lifestyle.
“With more and more people choosing to call the Fraser Coast home, Council is delivering vital projects like new and upgraded roads, improved
water and sewerage networks, and recreational facilities such as parks, pools and community venues,” he said.
“Council is committed to strategic growth and livability, ensuring the Fraser Coast remains a region where older residents can age comfortably, and younger generations see a bright future to live, work and raise families.”
Cr Seymour said work on the next stage of upgrades at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre began this month while the new Materials Recovery Facility at the Maryborough Landfill was on track for completion next month.
“The Hervey Bay Community Hub, featuring a new library across two levels, is now more than a third complete, while geotechnical investigations are underway for the construction
of a new rowing pontoon and gangway in the Mary River,” he said.
“While some projects are large-scale multi-million dollar investments, many smaller works are equally important for local communities.
“For example, bitumen resealing is being carried out on more than 80 roads across the Fraser Coast over the next three months. Footpath upgrades in Brendan Hansen Park in Granville and the refurbishment of toilets near the soccer fields in the Tinana Recreation Reserve also began this week.
“All of these projects align with Council’s vision to build better communities together. We are dedicated to ensuring the Fraser Coast continues to be a great place to visit and an even better place to live.”

WETSIDE Water Park made a splash this summer, drawing more than 55,000 visitors during the school holidays, cementing its reputation as one of the Fraser Coast’s top family destinations.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the impressive attendance figures underscored WetSide’s significance as both a vibrant community hub and a tourist drawcard.
“WetSide is a fantastic place to cool off and have fun, offering something for everyone—including waterslides, the newly renovated TotSide for underfives, and the thrilling Aqua Ninja course,” he said.

"The popularity of this award-winning park continues to soar, and we look forward to another fantastic year ahead.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts spokesperson

“There was a total of 132 performances in 2024, up from 99 in 2023 with highlights including Good Old Days of Rock and Roll and Music of the Night,” she said.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said alongside its thriving theatre program, the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre welcomed an additional 31,149 visitors in 2024 by hosting 236 corporate events.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is seeking additional funding to further develop the Mary to Bay Rail Trail and enhance the popular recreational route for both residents and visitors.
At its meeting held in late January, Council resolved to request that $9 million in unspent Queensland Government funding— originally allocated for the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail project—be redirected to future rail trail developments.
Council will also submit a proposal to contribute $250,000 of the returned funds to a $500,000 project to bring online another undeveloped section of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail.
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said securing funding is crucial to continuing the Mary to Bay Rail Trail’s development and creating vibrant community spaces.
“The Mary to Bay Rail Trail is a key recreational asset for the Fraser Coast, providing opportunities for people to walk, run, or cycle through both urban and rural landscapes,” Cr Truscott said.
“The Mary to Bay Rail Trail Advisory Committee has identified priority areas for development, and with
this funding, we can progress much-needed works to extend and improve the trail, providing more opportunities for outdoor activity and tourism.
“With Bundaberg Regional Council resolving late last year not to continue with the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail project, we are keen to ensure the State Government funding earmarked for that project remains available for other rail trail developments.”
Council has also resolved to prioritise forward planning for the design of an interim bikeway connecting Walker Street to Maryborough’s CBD via the Kent Street Principal Cycle Network.
“The Mary to Bay Rail Trail will provide an important link between Maryborough and Hervey Bay, encouraging
active transport, enhancing connectivity, and supporting local tourism,” Cr Truscott said.
“We are committed to working with our partners to see this project continue to evolve.”
The Mary to Bay Rail Trail follows the former rail line that once transported coal and agricultural products from the Wide Bay Burnett region to the Urangan Pier.
Fraser Coast Bicycle User Group has done work on the trail, with an 11-kilometre stretch near Takura opening in August 2023. The remaining sections will be planned and implemented through a partnership between the Council, the Queensland Government, and the Advisory Committee.

THE HERVEY Bay Regional Art Gallery capped off 2024 by welcoming around 15,000 visitors and showcasing 12 major exhibitions throughout the year.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour praised the gallery for its outstanding efforts in cultivating new local audiences while also attracting interstate and international visitors to this iconic cultural destination.
“Of our visitors, half visited from the Fraser Coast, 22% from other parts of Queensland, 20% from interstate, and about 10% were overseas visitors,” he said.
“The Fraser Coast boasts a rich and dynamic cultural scene, and Council is committed to providing ongoing opportunities for our community to celebrate the arts, heritage, and cultural diversity.
“Throughout 2024, the gallery showcased over 200 artists’ works across 12 major exhibitions.”
“Among the most popular with local audiences was the Hervey Bay Art Society exhibition, Forest to Fibre and an exhibition by Phoebe Paradise, which also included a new mural in the foyer.” Council Arts spokesperson
Cr Michelle Govers said the gallery’s commitment to community engagement saw it host more than ten school visits, welcoming students from prep to grade 12.
“In leadership news, Sarah Thomson was appointed as the gallery’s new director in 2024, bringing a passion for socially engaged projects, cultural diversity, and freedom of expression,” she said.
“Additionally, Joe Breikers joined the team as the new Exhibitions and Collections Coordinator following the departure of former curator Llewellyn Millhouse, who had served in the role since 2022.
“We’re excited about the year ahead as the 2025 program will celebrate diversity by
showcasing artists from a wide range of experiences and perspectives.”
“The program offers fresh perspectives on life in the region, showcasing major solo exhibitions by local women artists, the Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize, and a focus on Butchulla, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including a touring exhibition by Torres Strait Islander printmaker Billy Missi.
“I hope residents and visitors enjoy spending time in the gallery and are inspired, engaged and challenged by our 2025 exhibition programme.”

THE MOST borrowed items from Fraser Coast Libraries in 2024 show our members’ love for Bluey, conspiracy, crime, and home renovations.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the most popular items also included murder mysteries, Barbie the Movie, and the Guinness World Records, reflecting the diverse interests of library members.
“Our libraries are more than just books, they are vibrant community hubs,” he said.
“Fraser Coast Libraries provide a world of opportunities from reading, borrowing seeds and toys to getting creative with 3D printing, attending education talks and film screenings, or joining chess and scrabble days.
“Library membership has rebounded to pre-COVID levels, with nearly 5,000 new members
joining in 2024.
“It’s fantastic to see a steady increase in membership, with people borrowing not just books but also DVDs, eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, and toys.”
Cr Seymour said Fraser Coast Libraries added more than 15,000 new items and ran 1,861 library programs with over 77,000 participants in 2024.
“Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers we launched five seed libraries across the region and celebrated the reopening of the Hervey Bay and Howard libraries following renovations,” he said.
Cr Seymour acknowledged the incredible contribution of the 143 library volunteers, who donated over 5,000 hours to assist staff and library members.
“Technology also played a key
role, with 455,789 hours of WiFi used, over 18,000 hours of public PC access, and a 93% customer satisfaction rating,” he said.
“Our library services are free and offer a welcoming space for people of all ages to discover, learn, and grow.
“We’re excited to build on this success and look forward to an even bigger and better 2025!”

FRASER Coast residents are being urged to clean up around their homes and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites following hot weather and regular rainfall over recent months.
Council Public Health spokesperson Cr Michelle Byrne said the warm, wet conditions had created the perfect environment for mosquito numbers to boom.
“Mosquitoes can spread serious diseases, such as Ross River virus, which is transmitted through bites,” she said.
“Council staff are monitoring and treating known breeding sites to reduce mosquito numbers and to kill larvae before they take flight.
“Council staff also check light traps weekly to monitor mosquito species in residential areas and treat when needed.”
Cr Byrne said residents could take simple but effective steps to minimise the risk of mosquito bites.
“Applying insect repellent, wearing loose clothing to cover arms and legs, and wearing closed-in shoes can significantly increase protection against mosquito bites,” she said.
“If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes, and as the weather warms up, this process happens even faster. Mosquitoes can fly many kilometres, but if they’re breeding in pots on your patio, they don’t have to go far to
find someone to bite,” Cr Byrne said.

FOR YEARS, our region has been marketed under the broad banner of the Fraser Coast, tying together the beach lifestyle of Hervey Bay, the heritage charm of Maryborough, and the natural wonder of K’Gari (formerly Fraser Island).
But as K’Gari sheds the Fraser” name, has the Fraser Coast identity lost its impact?
Maryborough and Hervey Bay are two vastly different destinations—one steeped in colonial history, the other defined by sun, sand, and whales.
Right now, Hervey Bay struggles with its identity. It’s not even on weather maps, and it’s supposed city centre is labelled as Pialba.

OVERCOMING significant challenges from the 2022 floods, The Bond Store and The Story Bank museums enjoyed a strong resurgence in 2024.
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said over 22,500 locals and visitors explored Maryborough’s popular interactive museums in 2024, showcasing their enduring popularity.
“This impressive turnout was achieved despite The Story Bank’s temporary closure for roof repairs throughout February and The Bond Store only reopening in late March,” he said.
“The Story Bank, housed in a beautifully restored heritage-listed building, is one of Council’s most visited museums. Dedicated to the art of storytelling, it offers an in-depth exploration of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers—her life, family, and the inspirations behind her beloved works.
“Additionally, in 2024, 1,225 students participated in dynamic educational programs that brought the Australian National Curriculum to life through fun and interactive experiences.”
celebrations such as the Mary Poppins Festival, Relish Festival, and Open Gardens,” he said.
“A major highlight for 2025 will be the launch of the brandnew podcast series, What’s Your Story?, accompanied by an exhibit showcasing inspiring community resilience following the 2022 floods.
“With around 80% of visitors coming from outside the region, the figures highlight the facility’s widespread appeal and reinforce Council’s belief that the museums would attract people to the region, particularly to the Maryborough CBD.

KATIE Hawkins has to stop and think whenever someone asks her age. She jokes that she turned forty a few years ago and prefers not to count past that.
By her own calculations, she’s about forty-three, but really, age is just a number, right?
Born in Dandenong, Victoria, Katie grew up with her older brother, who is four years her senior. They share a close bond, and he lives on an acreage with his partner on the Mornington Peninsula.
Katie’s childhood was filled with adventure and sunshine. At three, her family moved to the Sunshine Coast, where she spent most of her formative years.
For her, the Sunshine Coast holds special memories—the place of endless beach days, breakfast by the shore with her grandparents and parents, cousins visiting, and
countless bike rides around the neighbourhood.
Katie did well in school, enjoying English and Tourism, but her first job was a Saturday receptionist at a real estate office. Unsure of her path after graduation, she took a year off and landed a reservations job at 17, sparking her passion for travel. She then earned a Certificate III in Travel and Tourism, becoming a full-time travel consultant, a career she loved.
“Every day was different, I was creating dream trips for people and, of course, traveling myself,” Katie shares. “That’s where my heart is”.
She met her husband, Adam, in a classic, old-school way—at a nightclub in Sorrento, Victoria. “He caught my interest straight away, that’s for sure! He’s a spunk,” she laughs. Their first date was at a drive-in movie with Adam’s friends, watching a horror film, definitely not
Katie’s preference, but she kept quiet to impress him!
The couple tied the knot in 2006 at the Blairgowrie Yacht Club, a tribute to Adam’s sailing background. At the time, he was a dedicated yachtie, competing in races like the Sydney to Hobart. “He got to sail, and I got to travel,” she smiles.
Katie has backpacked through Europe, worked in the UK, and explored the U.S, Asia, and the Middle East. Travel, she says, opens the mind and broadens perspectives.
Adam and Katie have two children, Summer, 12, and Archie, 10.
Before Summer’s birth, Adam and his friends swapped sailing for mountain biking, which soon became an obsession. This passion evolved into road cycling and, after moving to Hervey Bay in 2019, led to their business, Giant Hervey Bay.
Katie says, “We followed mum
and dad here, the move made sense. With housing affordability, great education, and amazing weather, it was a no-brainer”.
Katie manages administration and accounts in their business, occasionally assisting with sales. She also works as a Regional Sales Coordinator at K’gari, promoting the island and its tourism opportunities.
“I love what we’ve built, but I also cherish my two days away, back in travel.”
One of the most challenging times in Katie’s life was losing her mum. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2021, her mum underwent gruelling treatments, including having 80% of her stomach removed. She was cancer-free until 2023 when the illness returned aggressively.
Within four weeks of being hospitalised, she passed away.
“It was devastating,” Katie says.
“She was our number one supporter; we miss her every day.”
Katie remains close with her dad, who still lives in Hervey Bay.
“He’s not allowed to move away from me,” she jokes. They talk every morning and night and catch up regularly.
Social connectedness through movement is vital in Katie’s life.
The friendships she’s built through triathlons, running, and cycling have been an incredible support system.
“It’s more than just exercise—it’s connection. There’s something about early mornings with like-minded people that is very special.”
Looking ahead, Katie hopes to find more balance, allowing space to pause, reflect, and fully embrace all the beautiful things in her life.
