Queen’s Court Member Shines in 2021 4-H Supreme Showman Contest

50¢ Published Weekly in Danville, Indiana

4-H Bonanza

While tradition plays an important part in 4-H, the ability to try something new is also valued. Last year, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, a 4-H Showcase took the place of the traditional county fair. This year, with the Fair in a “hybrid” mode, it was decided to add new feature to the end of Fair Week: A Buyer’s Bonanza Auction.

4-H Livestock Show Ring Becomes New Auction Venue

The Queen’s Court rushed to hug fellow member Elly Roessler after she won the Supreme Showmanship contest at the 2021 Hendricks County 4-H Fair.

Elly Roessler may have thought the high point of the 2021 Hendricks County 4-H Fair came early, when she was selected as a member of the Queen’s Court a week before the Fair started. She might never have guess a bigger honor would be hers on the last day. Last Saturday afternoon, Elly won the title of 2021 Supreme Showman and received the Robert Scott Cooper Memorial Award for showmanship. She earned her place in the contest when she was selected as Senior Showman for Beef Cattle. Her competitors were Lora Watson, Senior Meat Goat Showman; Travis Arney, Senior Dairy Goat Showman; Kirsten Cummings, ELLY ROESSLER Senior Sheep Showman; Meghan O’Brien, Senior Swine _______________________ Showman; Carter Settles, Senior Dairy Showman; and Brogan Smith, Senior Horse Showman. We’ll have more about the Supreme Showman competition and other Fair activities in an upcoming special issue on the 2021 Hendricks County 4-H Fair. ______________________________________________________________________

Looking for FFA Jackets

Part of the display in the Ag Experience at the Cartlidge Barn during the 4-H Fair were several FFA blue corduroy jackets that belonged to FFA chapters around the county. The earliest (shown above) belonged to the late Sherman McKee, who was a member of the Avon FFA Chapter from 1937 - 1940. Danville FFA sponsore Duane Huge is seeking FFA jackets from past chapters, as well as information on those clubs. If you have information, contact him at dhuge@ danville.k12.in.us.

The NSSB Arena was set up with tables, with the auction items on display. Bidders could chose from a range of items, from wood carvings to concert tickets. The bidders were treated to a meal of pork burgers and chips, served up by the 4-H Fair Queen and her Court. Ted Everett Auction took charge of the bidding, with Ted himself working the ring and calling out bids. The high bid of the evening was by Justin Dorsey, who won the naming rights to the North/South Hall for the 2022 4-H Fair, for $4,100.00. Other high-end bids included $1,000 for the Hendricks County Swine Club Basket; $400 for a chauffeured day at the 2022 Fair with $50 in Fair Bucks, carnival wrist bands, and tickets to grandstand events. During the program, it was announced that an anonymous donor was offering $25,000, IF those attending the auction would match that amount. It took a short time to raise the matching amount. The evening ended with a total of $63,724 from the Buyers Bonanza.
