Call 811 Before You Dig

Spring is here and people are excited to get outdoors to plant trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as begin those outdoor construction projects that make homes more comfortable. Can you dig it? Yes, you can. But first, make an important call to 811, the national “Call Before You Dig” hotline and ask that the underground utilities on your property be properly located and marked. “Calling 811 before digging anywhere prevents damage to underground utilities, prevents potential personal injury and avoids electric and other utility outages,” said Scott Batson, Duke Energy senior vice president and chief distribution officer. “It also helps avoid costly repairs for the offenders.” Calling 811 is a free nationwide service. Contractors, homeowners, businessowners and anyone preparing for a digging project of any kind should call 811 at least three business days before digging begins. The local utilities will then send a crew to mark underground lines in the area (electric, natural gas, water, sewer, phone, cable TV and others) with above-ground stakes, flags or paint, which indicates restricted areas before a customer begins a digging project. In 2019, the U.S. Common Ground Alliance reported approximately 532,000 excavation-related damage events in the U.S., an increase of 14 percent from 2018, the latest year for which figures are available. Estimated damages in 2019 total approximately $30 billion in direct and indirect losses. In 2020, Duke Energy reported approximately 2,800 damage-causing digin events in its six-state electric service territory. In Indiana, the number was 138. With pandemic precautions in place, the Hendricks County Master Gardeners will once again host their “Gardening for All Ages” show on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fully enclosed Equine Pavilion/Horse Barn on the north side of the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds & Conference Complex in Danville. Directional signage will be in place. The new fairgrounds location accommodates the ongoing vaccine clinic and also allows for greater social distancing during the event. The Gardening for All Ages show had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and the group is excited to again welcome local gardeners. They will have over 30 garden-related vendors with plants, garden décor, bird-watching supplies, and advice to make this year’s garden your best ever. “It seems more and more people are interested in learning to garden, so we’re offering educational sessions intended both new and experienced gardeners,” says event co-chair Kimberly Somermeyer. Although the event will look a little different this year, the Hendricks County Master Gardeners will continue their tradition of distributing free vegetable and flower seeds, and trees from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. A large number of seed packets will be prebagged, and attendees can select flowers only, vegetables only or a mix of the two. The Master Gardeners encourage sharing seeds with friends and neighbors. Note: Due to current health guidelines, there will be no children’s activities this year and face masks are strongly recommended for all attendees. A food vendor, Georgia’s Kitchen, will be serving fair favorites such as Philly Cheesesteak, Italian sausages, walking tacos, and taco salad, along with beverages. The Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds & Conference Complex is located at 1900 E. Main St. in Danville, Indiana.
