“The talented chefs at The Old Bank have curated a menu that brings new heights to contemporary British cuisine, transforming seasonal ingredients into vibrant, memorable flavours”
Set in a former banking hall, the restaurant embraces the rich history of the building and even the wine cellar pays homage to the building’s past, which stands within one of the original bank vaults!
Chef Adam’s family connection to Westerham is evident in every detail, from the branding, designed by his brother, to the family honour that permeates the restaurant.
We were privileged to dine at the Old Bank and were absolutely blown away by not only the food but also, the inviting atmosphere. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Restaurant Manager Luciano, whose thoughtful service and knowledge of the menu made the whole dining experience feel very welcoming.
We opted for the five-course tasting menu, which left us in awe of the artistry and taste of each course...
The courses began with fresh bread and a trio of canapes, including a mushroom arancini with black truffle ketchup, pork belly tacos with salsa and coriander, alongside eye-catching squid crisps topped with taramasalata and black garlic. The second course, a white bean velouté served with black cow cheddar and piccalilli in a shortbread sandwich was warm and comforting, perfectly complementing the autumn chill. We then enjoyed a vibrant combination of artichoke, black truffle, granny smith apple, and potato consommé, which is such a visually stunning and mouthwatering dish! One of the highlights of the evening was the herb-fed chicken and mushroom wellington, served with kale, alliums and maitake mushrooms - an autumnal feast with true richness and warmth.
For dessert, we sampled both the almond, Kentish honey, chocolate chip souffle and the Kentish gypsy tart, which were both delicately indulgent.
This tasting menu offered an unforgettable dining experience, which we cannot recommend enough. Each dish presented meticulous attention to flavour, impressive presentation and delicate texture which showcases the chefs' innovative approach to British cuisine!
We would also recommend the wine flight to accompany the tasting menu. These carefully curated selections of wines accompanied each dish and were a standout addition, enhancing every course with perfectly complementary flavours.
After dinner, we were greeted by Chef Adam who shared the inspiring story of The Old Bank, which really added an insightful, personal touch! The is a restaurant which mixes unforgettable fine dining with a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere and it’s clear to see why The Old Bank has earned its place as a top dining destination in Kent!

With the days being shorter, many of us begin to feel the effects of lower energy levels, however, with some simple wellness strategies, it’s possible to thrive through these colder months and keep those spirits high!
One of the best remedies for the winter blues is getting outside and soaking up as much natural daylight as possible. Sevenoaks is home to many beautiful outdoor spaces, such as Knole Park and Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve, where you can enjoy a brisk walk or jog. Even on overcast days, exposure to daylight can lift your mood and help maintain healthy Vitamin D levels.
Nourishing your body with wholesome, seasonal foods is another way to stay energised during the colder months. In Sevenoaks, we’re fortunate to have some great local health shops that offer nutritious foods, supplements and herbal teas to support your immune system and overall health. Healthy food choices keep your body fueled and incorporating more root vegetables, leafy greens and citrus fruits can boost your energy levels!
Staying active is a must to helpkeep a positive outlook, especially during the colder months.
When it’s too chilly or rainy to get outside, try indoor options like yoga, Pilates, or home workouts. You’ll find plenty of local fitness classes in Sevenoaks, all designed to keep you feeling strong, healthy, and balanced—even when the weather isn’t cooperating!
Winter is also the perfect time to prioritise self-care. Whether you indulge in a cosy evening at home with candles and a book, or treat yourself to a spa day at a local wellness centre, relaxation plays a vital role in keeping your stress levels low and your well-being high. Mindfulness practices, includingmeditation, can also help you stay grounded.
Plus, remember the importance of connection. Spending time with friends and family and attending community events can be a powerful way to combat isolation and increase positivity...Bring on those Winter get-togethers!

“There’s all this evidence that core strengthening has an impact on stress. And when you see somebody that's depressed or stressed out, you notice changes in their posture. When you stand up straight, it has an effect on how you project yourself and how you feel. Well, lo and behold, core muscles have an impact on stress. And I suspect that if you activate core muscles inappropriately with poor posture, that’s going to have an impact on stress.”
- Peter Strick, Professor of Neurobiology
Just a 5-minute core blast can do wonders, think Plank, Russian Twists, Bicycle Crunches and Leg Raises! These exercises will not only help strengthen your core but also help improve stability, posture and of course, boosting your endorphins!

Create your own "Hygge" haven and embrace finding warmth, comfort and contentment in life's simplest moments!
Hygge is the Danish lifestyle concept that has taken the world by storm in recent years. Pronounced "hoo-gah," hygge embodies the idea of cosiness and warmth, creating a space that promotes comfort and contentment.
Research has shown that the Danish people consistently rank among the happiest in the world and many attribute this to the nation’s embrace of hygge. Incorporating hygge into your life can transform how you experience the colder months, offering not just a cosy atmosphere, but also real, tangible health benefits that can help boost both mental and physical well-being. By focusing on connection, warmth and simple pleasures, hygge creates a sense of calm and contentment that can nurture both your mind and body.
Hygge is the art of slowing down and focusing on what brings you peace and pleasure and in Denmark, where winters are long and dark, hygge is seen as a way to embrace the season rather than endure it.
It’s about finding joy in the simple things, such as sharing a meal with loved ones, enjoying the flicker of a fireplace, or reading a book with a nice cup of tea!
Hygge encourages togetherness and cultivates a sense of tranquillity. Whether it’s inviting friends over for a cosy meal, or spending time relaxing with family, the emphasis is on genuine connection to promote
deeper bonds and reduce feelings of loneliness.
The concept invites your body to slow down, leading to reduced anxiety, better sleep and physical well-being.
You could practice mindfully eating hearty meals to emphasise nourishment and warmth, or create a ‘hygge nook’ and dedicate a small corner of your home to relax, such as a window seat or a reading corner, making it a place where you can escape the busyness of life. Incorporate softer lighting such as candles and embrace comforting blankets or pillows to add a sense of cosiness!
The
• The word "hygge" became a key part of Danish culture in the late 18th century and comes from a Norwegian term that means "well-being."
• Danes burn more candles per capita than any other country in Europe. Candles are an essential part of creating hygge with soft, warm lighting contributing to a cosy atmosphere.
* Hygge is believed to support mental health. Its focus on relaxation, slowing down and enjoying simple pleasures can reduce stress and increase overall happiness and contentment.
• Although hygge is often associated with being indoors, it can also extend to nature. Enjoying a brisk walk in a park can also be hygge - especially if followed by a warm drink by the fire!
• Hygge is more about simplicity than extravagance. It’s not about expensive décor or activities, but creating a peaceful, comfortable environment where you feel relaxed and content.
• There is also an encouragement to unplug and switch off technology, which allows for true embracement of the present moment.
By focusing on simple pleasures, hygge helps to lower stress levels and reduces anxiety, for a more grounded and peaceful state of mind during the winter months.
Unplugging from a hyperconnected world!
In today's hyperconnected world, where smartphones buzz with endless notifications and laptops are always within arm's reach, finding time to unplug has become a growing challenge.
While technology brings incredible convenience, too much screen time can leave us overwhelmed, distracted and disconnected from the present moment. A complete digital detox - a conscious break from technology, allows us to step back, reset, and refocus. It allows us to be fully present, engage more deeply with the people and activities around us and restore a sense of balance.
A complete ‘unplug’ can feel like a radical act of self-care; however, striking a balance between the digital and physical worlds is the key to reclaiming your time, improving well-being and rediscovering what truly matters.
1. Set Screen Time Limits: Start by setting clear limits on how much time you spend on your devices each day. Many smartphones offer features that track and manage screen time, allowing you to monitor your usage and set daily limits for specific apps.
2. Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate certain areas of your home as tech-free, such as the bedroom or dining room. This encourages screen-free activities like reading and family meals without the temptation to check your phone.
3. Use Apps to Help You Unplug: Ironically, technology can help you reduce screen time. Apps like OffScreen or ScreenZen can block distracting apps for a set period, helping you focus on offline tasks.
4. Screen-Free Fun: Plan screenfree gatherings like game nights, movie nights (with phones off!), or group cooking sessions. Plus, don't miss out on local winter events!
5. Disable Notifications: Turn off non-essential alerts, such as social media notifications or promotional emails, so you aren’t constantly pulled back into the digital world.
6. Schedule Device-Free Time: Dedicate specific hours of the day to be completely device-free. This could be during meals, your morning routine, or before bedtime. Use this time for self-care, physical activity, or mindfulness practices.
By engaging in screen-free activities, you can transform this season into a time of self-care and mental clarity, reconnecting with yourself and the amazing world around you!
Let’s face it – life is busy, and finding time to meditate can feel like searching for Wi-Fi in a forest. But here’s the secret: meditation doesn’t need to be a grand, time-consuming affair. Everyday meditation is about finding mini-moments of calm amidst the chaos, like taking a deep breath in the checkout line or, pausing to feel the warmth of your coffee before gulping it down.
Start small. Try “one-minute mindfulness” in the morning; just close your eyes, breathe slowly and focus on how you feel. Or make everyday chores a chance to practice. Washing dishes? Folding laundry? Focus on each movement, feeling textures and temperatures. A surprisingly grounding practice!
With a little practice, you’ll find that meditation can fit smoothly into everyday life, quieting the mind, promoting relaxation and getting you in your zen zone throughout your day!
Let’s be honest: there’s just something about dogs that makes everything better. Rainy day? No problem—your dog’s excited! Need a cuddle after a long day? They’re there, tail-wagging, offering unconditional love (and possibly a bit of drool). Want an excuse to duck out of a particularly painful dinner party? Just say, “Oh, sorry, I need to get back to the dog!” You get to leave and everyone thinks you’re a devoted pet parent. Win-win!
But beyond the endless perks we could invent to justify having a dog, science backs up what we’ve always felt in our hearts - dogs are good for us. Really good, in fact and here's a deeper dive into why a dog is the ultimate wellbeing boost.
First off, having a dog is an automatic, built-in workout plan, whether you like it or not. When you’ve got a pair of puppy-dog eyes staring you down at 7 a.m., you will be going for a walk, even if it’s drizzling. Studies have shown that dog owners get about 30 minutes more physical activity each day than non-dog owners, which adds up over time.
Dogs are also miraculous little mood-boosters. They’re like therapy in fluffy form. Feeling down? Stressed? Overwhelmed by the cost of Freddos these days? Your dog doesn’t care about inflation - they’re just thrilled to see you. Dogs live entirely in the moment, blissfully unaware of tomorrow’s to-do list or that slightly embarrassing thing you said in 2011. Spending time with a creature who’s perpetually happy just because you exist is a game-changer. Science backs this up, too - interacting with dogs increases oxytocin (the “love hormone”) and reduces cortisol (the stress hormone).
And let’s talk about your social life. Many people avoid talking to strangers, but bring a dog into the picture and suddenly you’re the most popular person in the park. On top of it all, dogs are hilarious. From giving you side-eye when you mess up dinner to that frenetic “zoomies” run they do out of nowhere, dogs have an endless supply of unintentional gags. And laughter, as they say, is the best medicine!!
Keep your dog looking their best this season and step into a world of luxury dog grooming with Love to Paws. Run by Helen, a warm-hearted professional behind a salon where every dog receives top-quality care and attention.

As winter sets in and we start bundling up like overstuffed penguins, there’s something especially enticing about the idea of a spa day.
Imagine trading in those layers for a fluffy robe and sliding into a heated pool while the chilly world shivers outside. Pure bliss, right? Visiting a spa during the colder months is practically a public service to yourself and anyone around you who could benefit from you being a bit more zen!!
Winter spa visits offer a unique kind of relaxation. Cold-weather perks, like warm massages and thermal pools help soothe stiff muscles. Spas often offer thermal experiences, where you can sweat out all your stress in a sauna before cooling off in a refreshing pool. And let’s not forget the skin benefits of moisturising facials that combat winter dryness and salt scrubs that revive our neglected cold, dry feet!
If you’re thinking about gift ideas, a spa day isn’t just another "thing" to open on Christmas morning - it’s an experience and one that’ll earn you some serious brownie points. Nature pauses.
The freezing cold of winter takes a snapshot of time in the life of the park.
It’s catching its breath.
Leaves giving the trees a soft and colourful cloak have long been lost to the ground
Now, standing exposed but proud, the branches etch themselves into the backdrop as if created by a few flicks of a paintbrush.
The famous deer are resting, sheltering from the wind that whips through
Once abundant food is scarce
Full and satisfied bellies come courtesy of handouts from park rangers Fawns grow, expanding their mothers tummies
Waiting patiently for spring.
The duck pond is still, their home lodged in place until the weather relents
A thin opaque film sets the top
It will crack like creme brulee
Plunging the daring into its icy cold water.
The car park already half full Lights from the grand house shine through the misty haze
A beacon to guide first-time visitors.
The hardy perennials don their already-muddy boots
Scarves wound tight around the neck
Ready for bracing weather.
Dodging the rain, hopefully.
Children in puddles, certainly.
Cup of tea, definitely.
Some smile at strangers, others say hello and pass comment on the weather
Dogs meet and greet
Tails wagging, noses busy
Getting acquainted before it’s time to move on.
The cold wind brightens cheeks and makes noses glow Cloud trails of conversation disperse in the air, like they never happened
It’s home time.
A park can be transactional
Legs stretched, dogs walked, lunch settled The magic comes when it isn’t.
Nature exhales, spring will follow.

• It is a mystery where the word ‘cocktail’ originated, with various theories including an old practice in cock fighting, where roosters with shortened tails were known as cock-tails and the cropped feather tail was used as a garnish and to stir alcoholic drinks. Another theory comes from the French word "coquetel," a type of mixed drink from Bordeaux.
• The term Happy Hour was first used in the US Navy during the 1920s, when sailors were given the time to take a leisurely break from being at sea.
Mix up delightful cocktails and let the festivities begin, all from the warmth and comfort of your home! Set the mood and transform your living space into a cosy cocktail lounge by using soft lighting, seasonal decor, cosy candles and of course, a curated playlist of your favourite tunes.
There are countless scrumptious cocktail recipes, perfectly suited for this time of year that capture the spirit of the season - think spiced rums, warm apple flavours and rich chocolate liqueurs. Plus,
don’t forget to offer a spread of snacks to accompany your drinks. You could create charcuterie boards, cheese platters or other seasonal appetisers to nibble on!
With abundant alcohol-free flavours, you can also create delicious mocktails, such as gingerbread, sparkling pomegranate spritzers or rosemary-infused apple cider! Encourage guests to contribute their own cocktail recipes and even host a blind taste competition for a little extra fun…Cheers to bringing the cocktail party home!

The life of a writer can be a lonely affair, but not anymore.
Starting a new chapter, and on a quest to bring local writers together, to support, inspire, share and learn, Inkpots Writers was launched earlier this year by local writer, Lisa aka ‘Toria’ Thompson (there’s a story behind the pen-name, but that’s one for another day).
From plotting to pantsing*, character development, structure or pacing, the job of writing is hard, really hard, and by its nature, rather solitary. But writers need colleagues as much as any other profession. And that’s where Inkpots comes in.
“We’re here for writers of all levels, whether starting out, published, or anything in between. Fiction or non-fiction, adult, children’s or picture books. If you want to write a memoir, or
a business guide, or simply have the seed of an idea but not too sure where to start, we’re here. It’s all about building community, and finding colleagues.” And it goes beyond that.
The craft of writing isn’t just about ‘writing a book and getting it published’.
The harsh reality is, many books, many stories, won’t get published, but that doesn’t mean they should remain untold.
Like any art form, be it music, art, acting or dance, we do it because we have a desire to create. A story to tell. A voice to be heard. And in today’s busy and increasingly electronic lifestyle, taking a moment to sit down, put pen, literally, to paper, and take a breath can be extremely therapeutic on so many levels.
“Writing is such a powerful tool. With it we can not only create characters and worlds of our own, but also use it as a mechanism for communicating things that might be on our mind. We can take our thoughts; happy or sad, good or bad, out of our frequently overcrowded minds, and look at them from a new perspective.”
“But I can’t write. I’m not creative” is something I hear so often, says Toria, but having spent 25 years in the world of corporate accounting “because
I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up” I found writing. Or it found me. We can all write, we sometimes just need a little nudge. To make some time. Or to be given permission, and confidence, to start.
With a continuing series of writerly events and meet-ups planned for 2025 there’s the opportunity to ‘buy the gift of time…time to write’ with gift vouchers available for 2025 events to buy for anyone looking for something different to gift this Christmas.
If you’re feeling inspired or know someone who is, head to the events page of Toria’s website or contact her at toria@toriathompson.co.uk
*pantsing definition; to write by the seat of ones pants, as opposed to plotting out every aspect of your story!

After an amazing season and promotion, their women's 2nd XI will compete in the UK National League structure for the first time. It will be the first time in the club’s history that they have three teams competing in the National League, the women's 1st, women's 2nd and men's 1st teams! Their men's 1st XI also competed in the men's Indoor Premier Division and made the finals day in the previous event, losing out to Wimbledon in the Semi-Final - they hope to achieve the same level again!
Sevenoaks Hockey Club offers fantastic coaching opportunities, with sessions open to players of all ages and skill levels. They provide a fun and relaxed way for members to improve their game, learn from experienced coaches and try new techniques. Their thriving youth development program focuses on nurturing talent from a young age, encouraging children and teenagers to stay active, develop their skills and build confidence through Hockey! Plus, their exciting holiday clubs are a great opportunity for children to stay active during school breaks and continue developing their passion for hockey with amazing international-level players and brilliant coaches.
Sevenoaks Hockey Club is a welcoming, community-driven organisation and their social calendar is packed with regular events. From fun match days to seasonal celebrations and fundraisers, these events offer players and their families the chance to connect and socialise!
If you are interested in joining this dynamic and friendly club, Sevenoaks Hockey Club encourages new members to give hockey a try, whether it’s picking up a stick for the first time, developing your skills or returning to the sport after some time away. To help new members ease into the club, they offer the chance to attend two taster sessions before committing to membership - so there’s no reason not to pick up a stick and give it a go!

As the winter chill sets in here in Sevenoaks, many of us are ready to swap out lightweight summer décor for something a bit more, well, hibernation-friendly!
Winter interior design is all about creating a warm, inviting space, where you can kick back, relax and maybe even embrace the odd Christmas film. So let’s dive into some easy tips and fun ways to make your home feel cosier this season - without taking up permanent residence under a blanket!
- Let There Be Light: Winter is all about soft, warm lighting that makes every corner look a little more magical and a lot more inviting. Think fairy lights draped over the mantelpiece, chunky candles in varying heights and perhaps a statement floor lamp to brighten up dark evenings, perfect for a spot of winter reading. Soft lighting is not only mood-enhancing but also kind to those of us who, let’s face it, may have let the dusting slide a little during the colder months.
- The Magic of Layers: This season, layering is your new best friend. Start with chunky throws, pile on textured cushions and consider swapping out lighter drapes for thicker curtains in rich hues. Velvet, wool or even faux fur are perfect choices for warmth and texture. And don’t be afraid to mix patterns! Plaids, checks and even subtle florals can give your home that “I’m living in a charming, countryside cottage” feel.
- Embrace Deep Hues: Bright white might have its place in the summer, but winter calls for something bolder. Jewel tones like deep greens, rich burgundies and dark blues bring a cosy, yet sophisticated vibe. And if you’re unsure about going all-in with a wall colour, try adding these shades in the form of cushions, rugs, or even a new feature chair. You might be surprised at how a dash of daring colour can make a room feel like a snug little haven.
- Bring Nature Indoors: Who says greenery is only for the warmer months? Winter plants like eucalyptus, holly and pine branches are a great way to add a hint of nature without much upkeep. Arrange a few sprigs in a vase or add a wreath to the wall for a touch of seasonal charm. Indoor plants also thrive in lower light, so they’re perfect for adding life to a room without constant upkeep. They’ll give your space an earthy vibe and help remind you that spring isn’t too far off.
- Focus on Texture: This winter, go all-in on texture to bring dimension and warmth to your interiors. Think thick wool blankets draped over sofas, nubby pillows and woven baskets to hold magazines or extra blankets. Even a soft, fluffy rug can make a room feel warmer underfoot, giving you a cosy spot to stand with your morning coffee, or curl up for a movie night. Plus, texture brings a tactile element to your design that instantly makes everything feel a bit homier.
- A Few Quirky Touches: Finally, add a little personality with fun, quirky pieces that reflect your own style. Whether it’s a vintage lamp, a family photo wall, or a wellloved armchair, these little touches can make a big impact. Winter decor doesn’t have to be serious—injecting a little fun and character can go a long way in creating a space you’ll love spending time in.
Let’s embrace winter design with open arms! After all, it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up in a beautifully designed home, sip a hot drink and watch the world go by - preferably from the comfort of a cosy, revamped living room!

It is a very tranquil and reflective place to walk, with winding paths and a stream flowing through it. It is located 10 to 15 minutes from the local railway station.
F is for Food - Why not pop into The Olive Tree and have a drink and a scone, while maybe buying something and helping the Hospice of Hope? For something more substantial, just down the road is a pub, The Bull, and a restaurant, which was called The Forge, now it is Hilal, an oriental restaurant. If you are waiting for a train, visit Kiro’s Kiosk on Platform One; he serves a wide variety of coffees and teas, snacks and pastries.
O is for Oaks – Otford is 10 minutes away from Sevenoaks, the nearest town (or seven minutes by train.) Sevenoaks is so called because of the Seven Oaks that were planted by the Vine Cricket Ground. Since the Great Storm of 1987, it lost six of them. Even though it is still named Sevenoaks, it only has One Oak!
R is for Remains – The remains of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s palace (12 th century) can be found standing in Palace Field. It is a great place in which to walk in the summer. In the gardens of Bubblestone Road, various pieces of archaeology were found in excavations.
D is for Desire – Okay, maybe a bit of a cop out this one, but I hope you have the desire to come to Otford one day to find out more!
As a student at Weald of Kent Grammar School for Girls in Sevenoaks, I often either drive or walk through Sevenoaks or go shopping in the main town area. I recently performed at The Stag Theatre and regularly perform there, and I love seeing how the leaves change from an olive green to a golden orange. Sevenoaks is really beautiful, and you can see how it prepares for autumn and transforms for the winter from local shop windows as the stock changes from summer to winter wear. I strongly feel like Sevenoaks applies every delicate detail and really demonstrates that autumn is here, and summer is gone.
The seven beautiful oaks that symbolise Sevenoaks were planted in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward the 7th and started a huge part of Sevenoaks' history. Sadly, during The Great Storm that struck Sevenoaks in 1987 (which was the worst storm in 400 years) all but one of the oaks were flattened by winds of over 100mph. The one oak that luckily remained is now called, 'The King Oak,’ as they were planted to commemorate the King. In December 1988, seven new oaks were planted by local school children by the edge of the Vine Cricket Ground. This means that there are now eight trees just in case one gets destroyed by another disastrous storm. However, this means that the main oak tree’s trunk is now double the trunk of the others.
It was devastating what happened in 1987 and I wish it had never happened, but I know that Sevenoaks is still as beautiful as ever.
