A look into the changing dynamics behind the tradition of trick or treating
By Iyla Langlands
I remember running around the estate in a flowing cape with fake blood smeared over any spare skin. Knocking on doors and squealing with delight after sugar turned my tongue blue. The houses covered in webs as though they were tinsel, and gardens suffocated by inflatables. Pumpkin buckets overflowing with the evening’s bounty meant the night had come to an end. However, spooky stories and exciting memories would be the headline of school discussions for the following weeks. Halloween granted yet another opportunity to enjoy our short-lived youth and harvest wholesome childhood memories.
Children today may have a different experience regarding Halloween. Parents avoid contact with strangers and late nights. This may seem like a decision made out of love, but it also steals a core part of the year. Halloween unites neighbourhoods and proposes an opportunity for children to express themselves. This autumnal tradition must remain, and it is up to us to ensure this…
So, take yourself, friends and family on a Halloween adventure this autumn. Make some spooky and spectacularor should I say spooktacularmemories!
Summer has come to an end and as some mourn the death of the sun, others welcome this new season of auburn nature. Meanwhile, teenagers face the grand question- at what age are you no longer allowed to trick or treat?
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the 31st of October that originated from the festival of Samhain celebrated by the Celts. It was believed that during the festival, souls of the deceased returned and visited their homes, while those who had passed within the year journeyed to the other world. A key part of the festival was to wear masks to prevent ghosts that were present from recognising the living. Despite this event being adapted over the years by different countries and faiths, the core activity of disguising yourself remains. The excitement of dressing as heroes and villains and collecting sweets is what we call trick or treating.
Statistics suggest that crime rates spike during Halloween. Activities such as vandalism, theft and assault are more likely to occur on Halloween night and this risk is often attributed to the presence of disruptive teenagers. However, it could be deemed unfair to class all teenagers as unable to trick or treat, since many just want to continue their innocent
TRICK OR TREATING: A SPOOKY EXCUSE TO INDULGE YOUR SWEET TOOTH!
childhood and enjoy a fun activity with friends.
I remember being a child and wandering the streets of my neighbourhood in a princess dress with a pumpkin pot. Ringing doorbells, munching on sweets and playing games with friends and family. These memories are slightly tainted by the presence of teenagers. They would walk in large groups, not in costumes, and often emptied entire buckets of sweets into their bags. My parents were disgusted at this sight and strongly believed that these children were simply too old to be knocking on doors but should be opening them instead. While feeling intimidated by this behaviour that seemed unnatural to my young eyes, I also enjoyed the company of other teens that were my friends. Some years, my parents couldn’t take me out, so I was instead accompanied by our neighbour. Despite her being aged 15, she allowed me to feel excitement and thrilling fear and not once did she try to steal my bounty!
It is likely that many children today enjoy Halloween with older friends or that the presence of teenagers is simply enjoyed as they enhance the fun nature of Halloween. This conflict in experiences and opinion places both parents and their children in quite a predicament. As guardians, parents must guide their children through their life and prevent them from having a negative impact on the world. However, shouldn’t teenagers be allowed to decide for themselves when their youth has come to an end?
While some argue that age is just a number and Halloween is an opportunity for teens to express themselves freely, others believe that the night shouldn’t be ruined for youngsters by those trying to drag out their childhood. Perhaps a middle ground can be reached, and maybe a simple trick or treating etiquette needs to be enforced.
The big question is- what do you think? And will you be trick or treating this year?

Whether you’re a seasoned forager or a curious beginner, exploring the world of wild mushrooms can be both rewarding and delicious. These earthy gems, hidden in woodlands and meadows, have been a staple of British cuisine for centuries. So grab your basket, put on your wellies and head out into the woods to discover the rich, earthy flavours of local wild mushrooms!
Foraging for mushrooms is not only about the thrill of the hunt but also about respecting nature! Before you head out, make sure you’re equipped with a well-informed guidebook. Identifying mushrooms correctly is crucial, as some species can be toxic.
Key Mushrooms to Look For:
1. Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius):
These golden, funnel-shaped mushrooms are a favourite among foragers. They have a delicate, peppery flavour that works beautifully in risottos, soups, or simply sautéed in butter. Look for them in damp, mossy areas of deciduous woodlands, particularly under birch, beech, or oak trees.
2. Porcini (Boletus edulis):
Also known as the penny bun, this mushroom is highly prized for its rich, nutty flavour. Porcini are stout with a thick stem and a broad brown cap. They are often found in coniferous and broadleaf forests, especially near spruce and pine trees. Perfect for drying, or adding to pasta dishes and stews.
3. Wood Blewit (Lepista nuda):
Once you've safely foraged your mushrooms, the possibilities in the kitchen are endless. Here is a little inspiration:
• Sautéed Mushrooms: The simplest way to enjoy your freshly picked mushrooms is to sauté them in butter with garlic, thyme and a splash of white wine. This method enhances their natural flavours and makes a delicious topping for toast, pasta, or meat dishes.
• Mushroom Risotto: Wild mushrooms bring a depth of flavour to risottos. Combine your foraged finds with arborio rice, parmesan and a good stock for a comforting autumn meal.
• Mushroom Soup: Create a rich and creamy mushroom soup by blending sautéed mushrooms with vegetable stock, cream and a hint of nutmeg.
• Preserve your mushrooms by drying them for later use. Porcini, in particular, dry well and can be rehydrated to add flavour to soups, stews, and sauces throughout the year!
With its striking lilac, or purple hue, the wood blewit is easy to spot in autumn. It has a slightly perfumed taste, a firm texture and safe when cooked. You'll find them in leaf litter in woodland clearings and sometimes in gardens, or grassy areas.
4. Hedgehog Mushroom (Hydnum repandum):
Named for the spines under its cap, the hedgehog mushroom has a sweet, nutty flavour. It's a versatile mushroom, that can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries, to omelettes. Look for these in mixed woodlands, especially under beech and oak trees.
5. Shaggy Inkcap (Coprinus comatus):
Recognizable by its tall, shaggy cap, this mushroom is edible whilst young and must be used soon after picking, as it quickly deliquesces into an inky liquid. It has a mild flavour that pairs well with eggs, or is used in sauces. You'll find them in grassy areas, often on roadsides or in meadows.
1. Always be 100% sure of your identification before consuming any wild mushroom. Use a reliable guidebook or app and when in doubt, consult an expert.
2. Avoid Polluted Areas: Don’t pick mushrooms from roadsides, industrial areas, or places where chemicals might be used, as they can absorb toxins from the environment.
3. Pick only what you need and be mindful of leaving some behind to continue their life cycle and support the ecosystem.
4. Beginners should start with easily identifiable mushrooms like chanterelles or porcini, which have fewer toxic lookalikes.

a
drink made from ground cocoa beans mixed with water, chilli peppers and spices. This bitter, frothy concoction was known as “xocolatl” and was believed to have powerful health benefits.
When Spanish explorers brought cacao back to Europe in the 16th century, the drink was sweetened with sugar and flavoured with vanilla, transforming it into the hot chocolate we know today. Over time, hot chocolate spread across the world, evolving into the creamy, indulgent beverage loved by so many!
The taste of homemade hot chocolate is unbeatable! The key to the perfect cup lies in using quality ingredients and a little bit of technique. To craft a hot chocolate that’s rich, velvety, and utterly irresistible, combine milk and heavy cream in a saucepan on a low heat. Mix with the chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth. Continue to heat until the hot chocolate is thick and creamy, about 2-3 minutes. Serve immediately in mugs
and for an extra touch, top with whipped cream or marshmallows!
You can also make a healthy hot chocolate using raw cacao!
Raw cacao is a nutrient-dense superfood that offers all the rich, chocolatey flavour you crave, with added health benefits. Unlike processed cocoa powder, raw cacao is unroasted, preserving its natural enzymes and high levels of antioxidants, magnesium and iron. It also contains flavonoids, which can support heart health and improve blood flow.
This healthy hot chocolate recipe is a guilt-free way to indulge, perfect for when you want a comforting treat that’s both delicious and nutritious. Simply mix together unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice) with 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract!

...a traditional celebration that blends history, fun and community spirit!
On the 5th of November, the skies of Kent light up with vibrant fireworks and the air fills with the smoky aroma of bonfires.
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night is a uniquely British celebration which traces its origins to the foiled Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed attempt by a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, to assassinate King James I and blow up the Houses of Parliament. In celebration of the king's survival, bonfires were lit across London.
The celebrations persisted, evolving into the vibrant date we know today where we gather and enjoy the celebrations!
So, whether you're watching a spectacular fireworks display, warming your hands by a crackling bonfire, or love enjoying the traditional treats, remember, remember the 5th of November and join in on the fun of this uniquely British tradition!
By planning a cosy and festive gettogether with delicious food, warming drinks and fun activities, you can create an unforgettable experience.
So, gather your loved ones, light the bonfire (or sparklers!) and let the magic fill the air!
Bonfire Night offers the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family for a cosy get-together. Whether you're hosting a garden bonfire, or an indoor gathering, here’s a little inspiration to make your Bonfire Night party a memorable event with delicious food and drinks that will keep everyone warm and satisfied.
Creating the right atmosphere is the key to a successful Bonfire Night party. Start by decorating your space with a mix of rustic elements. Think fairy lights strung through trees, lanterns placed around the garden and if possible, a bonfire as the centrepiece.
Provide plenty of seating with blankets and cushions to keep guests warm and consider setting up a
marquee as after all, this is England in November!
There is a huge array of mouth-watering bonfire classics to keep your guests full including baked potatoes, hot dogs or corn on the cob. A great crowdpleaser is a big pot of chilli con carne, whether beef or vegetarian, is perfect for warming up guests. Serve with rice, crusty bread, or tortilla chips, grated cheese and sour cream.
No bonfire night is complete without roasted marshmallows. Let guests toast their marshmallows over the fire and you could even create a warm bowl of melted chocolate for that extra indulgence! Toffee apples are also a traditional Bonfire Night treat, which are easy to make and fun to eat - perfect for the little ones. Simply dip apples in melted toffee, or caramel and let them cool before serving.
While Bonfire Night is a time of fun and celebration, safety is paramount. Firework safety is a significant concern, and everyone must take great care to ensure events are safe for all.
For those choosing to have their own bonfire or fireworks, it's crucial to follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
Creating warming drinks is sure to get your friends and family into the spirit of the evening!
You could set up your own hot chocolate bar where guests can customise their drinks. Offer a variety of toppings such as whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, cinnamon sticks and flavoured syrups. Plus, by keeping your hot chocolate in a slow cooker you will be able to serve the deliciousness all night!
Mulled wine is always a strong favourite at this time of year. To create your own, simmer red wine with spices, such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise
To keep your guests entertained, plan a few activities that everyone can enjoy! If it's safe and legal to do so in your area, a small fireworks display can be the highlight of the evening.
Jam to your favourite music and provide sparklers for guests to light up the night. Don't forget to provide a bucket of water nearby for disposal.
You could also create fun activities such as a themed quiz or get your guests involved with exciting outdoor games including glow stick tag, a themed treasure hunt, or a sack race to keep both kids and adults entertained and

I set up the TN card because I’m passionate about where I live and want to see our town centres thrive - I know many of us feel the same. The TN card not only provides a helpful directory of amazing independent businesses but gives us all (myself included) another great reason to use them. With our member events, business workshops and community projects it’s a wonderful community to be part of.”
Did you know? The TN card is a Social Enterprise which means that it puts Social Purpose before Profit. 10% from each membership card sold is donated to West Kent Mind, and all profits are spent providing free marketing for its High Street businesses.
To join the TN card costs £3 a month or £25 a year (for digital membership) and 10% goes to West Kent Mind. …and embrace this wonderful season of wellness, offering a natural transition from the high energy of summer to the more reflective months
Autumn is a season that nurtures both body and mind, offering an opportunity of reflection and nourishment that can enhance your wellness.
Autumn's quieter, cooler atmosphere encourages introspection and self-care. As the pace of life slows down, it's an ideal time to reflect on personal goals, reset routines and focus on mental and physical wellbeing.
The transition into autumn can often bring a sense of sluggishness and a dip in energy levels, as daylight becomes more scarce. However, autumn also offers a unique opportunity to focus on wellness. The season naturally promotes a more mindful approach to life, allowing you to reconnect with yourself and establish healthy habits before the hustle of the holiday season.
By embracing the rhythms of the season, nourishing your body with nutritious, seasonal foods and adopting more movement, you can maintain your vitality and wellbeing throughout the autumn months, turning this time of year into one of renewal and revitalisation!

Meet Paula, from Hub of Happy. She’s a certified life coach and clinical hypnotherapist specialising in Midlife Mindset and Stress Management.
When we asked Paula what she thinks makes her approach to coaching different, she replied, “Now that’s a great question! I think my style of coaching is a culmination of both my personal life experiences and the journey that my career has taken alongside them. Initially from a creative background, I spent over 16 years coaching commercial artists. I use this experience in coaching, guiding clients to be creative and imaginative when manifesting the life that they want and helping them to adopt different and healthier ways of thinking.
After exploring alternative and complementary therapies to help my wellbeing, I was inspired to train as a holistic wellbeing practitioner and have been helping people with stress management for almost 23 years. I use this experience to coach easy and effective ways to manage stress whilst navigating the tricky junctions that can occur in Midlife. In difficult times, coaching and hypnotherapy were lifesaving tools for me so it’s no surprise that my most recent career pivot was to train in psychological approaches to coaching, clinical hypnotherapy
and other neuroscience-based modalities. I think it’s this hub of modalities that make my coaching style unique.
In addition to my 121 practice, I deliver talks and workshops to organisations and wellbeing events, sharing my wisdom about stress management and the benefits of having a healthy mindset. I make these fun, interactive and immersive by mixing discussion-based presentations with my group hypnotherapy experience, The Homecoming Sessions; a hybrid of breathwork, meditation and group hypnotherapy which is delivered on headsets, immersing you in your own intimate experience.
I have worked in a variety of settings including charitable and corporate organisations, retreats and wellbeing events. Witnessing how implementing these kinds of wellbeing strategies can increase positivity and productivity and reduce stress and illness is incredible!” To book your free call to explore how to find your happy with 121 coaching, or to enquire about booking Paula for your wellbeing event or team building day, please visit- www.hubofhappy.co.uk

Nestled in the heart of Sevenoaks, The Stag stands as a beacon of history, culture and community spirit.
This beloved venue, which first opened its doors on 22nd August 1936 has been an enduring presence in the town for nearly 90 years. While the world outside has evolved, The Stag has remained a constant and a familiar face for generations of residents and visitors to Sevenoaks.
The story of The Stag began in the golden age of cinema. Originally known as the Majestic Cinema, it was a grand building with a striking façade that drew crowds eager to experience the magic of the silver screen. The cinema was a cultural hub, a place where people gathered to escape into the world of films, whether it was the latest Hollywood blockbuster or a touching drama.
Today, The Stag operates as a charity and each month, over 5,700 people pass through its doors, drawn by the diverse array of events on offer.
