You'll find The Cinnamon Square at Rings Hill, Hildenborough, Kent, TN11 8LX

A TASTE OF LUXURY AT THE CINNAMON SQUARE

Surrounded by lush Kentish countryside, lies a local culinary gem that’s gained a reputation for fine Indian dining, and we were delighted to have spent a Friday evening at this luxurious local Indian restaurant.

The Cinnamon Square is an awardwinning restaurant that delivers a truly memorable dining experience. With outstanding service and warm hospitality, this incredible team are attentive, knowledgeable and ready with thoughtful recommendations. Their commitment to quality service shines through in every interaction, with a genuine passion for making all diners feel special!

The Cinnamon Square not only celebrates Indian cuisine but also presents it with a luxurious flair, making it an ideal spot to bring a date, celebrate a special occasion, or simply treat yourself to something more memorable than a Friday night takeaway!

"The skilled chefs at The Cinnamon Square have crafted a menu that infuses Indian cuisine with distinctive flavours, turning aromatic ingredients into bold and unforgettable dishes!"

Their elegant interior has been carefully designed to offer an intimate and elevated dining experience.

It’s clear to see that the owner has a true passion and through his regular trips, including to Dubai, the restaurant has been shaped by years of travel inspiration. With luxurious finishes, subtle lighting, stylish décor and even fresh-cut flowers on each table, they create an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

The menu at The Cinnamon Square is far from your average Indian restaurant too, offering a diverse selection of unique and exceptional dishes. While you’ll still find classics, the real magic lies in the standout flavour combinations and presentation - each dish is a delicious culinary experience.

To start, we shared the Mixed Grill Starter, featuring juicy kofte, aromatic tandoori chicken and lamb cutlets.  We also went for a dish that instantly stood out – the Jingha Raj Puree. This succulent prawn dish was served on deep-fried roti and packed with flavour. It managed to be light, yet indulgent, with the prawns cooked to absolute perfection – plum, tender and perfectly seasoned.

The Cinnamon Square combines exquisite dining with a welcoming, elegant charm.

For the mains, we were simply spoiled for choice. The staff kindly offered guidance and talked us through some of the house specialities. One of the standouts was the Darjeeling Lamb – tender pieces of lamb marinated in a blend of fresh herbs and spices, then slowly simmered until meltingly soft. It was served with fluffy rice and was the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite to appreciate the layers of flavour.

We also couldn’t resist the Silsila, a Mughal-inspired curry made with onion, peppers, fresh herbs and the chef’s secret sauce. It was a hearty dish with a wonderful depth of flavour – savoury, aromatic and comforting, without being heavy.

Another highlight was the machli masala, a delicious dish of grilled salmon fillets, spices and their special masala sauce. Equally impressive was the Jingha Raj Nawabi, featuring three large (or I could say - gigantic!) king prawns fragranced with garlic, onion and fresh herbs. Medium in heat but bold in taste, it was beautifully balanced –fragrant, rich and deeply satisfying. If you’re a seafood lover, this is a must-try. These incredible dishes were all served with cheese and chilli keema naan, tarka dall, and not forgetting the fluffy pilau rice.

The Cinnamon Square is a true highlight in the local dining scene. From their distinctive, aromatic dishes and quality service to the elegant atmosphere and luxury finishes, this charming restaurant offers a truly special dining experience - a real gem well worth discovering!

If you’ve still got room after the mains (we recommend you make room!), their dessert menu is well worth indulging in. Sweet and satisfying desserts are a perfect way to end the meal and pair beautifully with the restaurant’s excellent wine selection. The bar is well-stocked with an impressive range of beers, wines, spirits and mixers, catering to every taste. If you’re after a crisp lager to cut through the spice, or a glass of bold red to complement your curry, you’ll find something to suit any taste!

One of the most memorable aspects of our evening was the outstanding service. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, offering thoughtful recommendations and making

sure we had everything we needed. They clearly take great pride in their work and in ensuring every guest has an exceptional experience, which makes you want to return again and again. The combination of impeccable service, personal touches and a sincere dedication to guest satisfaction makes this restaurant one not to be missed!

Whether you're local to Sevenoaks or just passing through, we wholeheartedly recommend a visit to The Cinnamon Square. With their unique dishes, luxurious ambience and genuine warm welcome, this beautiful restaurant is a true local gem. For bookings and more information, check out The Cinnamon Square's website at - www.thecinnamonsquare.co.uk

MOCKTAIL SERVING TIPS

* Glass matters – Put it in a proper glass! Even squash feels fancy in a wine glass.

* Batch it up – Make ahead in jugs for easy garden party hosting. Or keep a jar of infused syrups in the fridge for fast flavour. Sip, smile, repeat for a tasty Kentish summer in a glass.

Serve over crushed ice in a cocktail glass and top with a floating strawberry, lemon or edible flower for full garden party chic!

Napping isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of knowing how to work with your biology, not against it.

In a world that’s always on, taking a moment to turn off is one of the most powerful things you can do for your mind and body.

In a culture that glorifies hustle, napping often gets unfairly associated with laziness or lack of discipline.

But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that some of the most successful people swear by a good snooze. Far from being unproductive, a welltimed nap can be a secret weapon for sharper thinking, better focus, and boosted creativity. Turns out, resting your eyes might just be the smartest move in your day!

THE POWER OF REST

EMBRACING A SUMMERTIME NAP

We’ve all felt it — that mid-afternoon slump where your eyelids start drooping and your brain turns to mush. You’re tempted to sneak in a quick nap, but then that inner critic kicks in: "Naps are for kids. You’re just being lazy."

Let’s stop right there. Science is re-writing the narrative on rest, and the verdict is in: Napping isn’t lazy- it’s smart, strategic and surprisingly powerful for our mental and physical health.

Numerous studies have shown that a well-timed nap can significantly boost alertness, creativity, memory and mood. NASA even tested naps on pilots and astronauts and found that a 10 to 20-minute nap improved performance by 34% and alertness by 100%. That’s not a typo. One hundred per cent.

Dr. Sara Mednick, author of Take a Nap! Change Your Life has spent her career studying sleep. Her research shows that naps can reduce stress, improve cognitive function and even lower the risk of heart disease. “You get a burst of rejuvenation,” she explains, “without the grogginess of oversleeping. So instead of powering through your day on fumes, consider that your brain may be asking for a reset. Just like your phone needs to recharge, so do you.

Tips for the Perfect Nap

If you want to maximise the benefits of napping without turning into a sleepzombie, here’s how to do it right:

1. Keep It Short and Sweet (10–30 minutes)

The ideal nap length is between 10 and 30 minutes. This keeps you in the lighter stages of non-REM sleep and prevents sleep inertia, that groggy, disoriented feeling when you wake up from deep

sleep. A short nap gives you a quick boost without stealing from your nighttime rest.

2. Nap Between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Your body naturally dips in alertness after lunch. That’s not the carbs talking - it’s your circadian rhythm. Taking a nap during this window aligns with your biological clock and helps ensure it won’t interfere with your night-time sleep.

3. Try a "Nappuccino" (Yes, Really)

This one might sound wild, but it’s backed by science: drink a cup of coffee right before your nap. Caffeine takes about 20 minutes to kick in, which means just as you're waking up, the coffee boosts your alertness. Studies have shown this combo can enhance performance better than either a nap or caffeine alone.

4. Create a Nap-Friendly Environment

Find a quiet, dark and cool place. Use an eye mask or white noise if needed. You don’t have to fall into a deep sleep, even just resting quietly with your eyes closed can be restorative.

5. Don’t Stress if You Can’t Sleep

Sometimes your brain is too busy to snooze. That’s okay. Just the act of lying down and relaxing can lower cortisol levels and help you feel better. Think of it as mental decluttering.

BEN EARL RETURNS TO THE NEW BEACON

British & Irish Lions Star

Ben Earl Returns to The New Beacon During the School’s 125th Anniversary

Year

As part of their 125th anniversary celebrations, The New Beacon pupils were delighted to welcome England rugby international and Old Beaconian, Ben Earl, back into school just a day after the announcement of his selection for the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.

Ben, a key player for Saracens and an established presence in the England squad, returned to his former school to meet pupils and staff. The visit was a proud moment for the school community, offering boys a clear example of where hard work, determination and a love for sport can lead.

Ben took part in a Q&A session, where he spoke about his journey from schoolboy rugby to the international arena.

He also led a training session for the boys, offering practical advice and encouragement as they took to the field.

Throughout his visit, Ben was generous with his time, meeting pupils across the age range and answering questions. There was also the opportunity for him to reconnect with a few familiar faces among the staff, some of whom taught him during his time at The New Beacon!

Headteacher Mrs Brownsdon said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Ben back to The New Beacon, particularly in such a significant year for the

school.

His visit provided the boys with an inspirational example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication and a unique insight into the path from prep school rugby to the highest levels of the game. We will be following his progress on the Lions tour with huge interest and pride.”

The New Beacon community congratulates Ben on his British and Irish Lions selection and wishes him every success on tour in 2025.

Fresh berries, family memories and an abundance of sweetness await!

For a spontaneous day out this Summer that ticks all the boxes, head over to Stonepitts Farm for fresh air, family fun and a lot of deliciousness to take home!

Tucked away in the stunning North Downs, Stonepitts is a bit of a local treasure. With over 60 years of growing expertise, they’ve truly perfected the art of producing strawberries bursting with flavour.

From June through to August, their Pick Your Own (PYO) fields are open seven days a week, offering visitors the simple joy of picking fresh, sun-ripened fruits straight from the plant.

There’s no need to book ahead, you can just turn up, grab a punnet and head into the fields. Choose from 6 different varieties of strawberry and three types of raspberries, each with their own unique taste and character. And let’s be honest, there’s something deeply satisfying about hunting down the plumpest, reddest berry yourself.

It is also a brilliant way to get the little ones involved - they just love the adventure of filling up their baskets (and, let’s be realistic, sneaking the odd berry mid-pick!).

Once you’ve picked your fill, it’s a simple matter of weighing and paying

a wonderfully old-fashioned experience that feels like a little step back in time. Plus, by picking your own, you're directly supporting local farming and sustainability efforts, making it a day out that's good for both you and the planet.

The fruits themselves are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and a good dose of Kent sunshine.

Whether you’re planning to whip up a show-stopping pavlova, jazz up your morning porridge, or just eat them by the handful on the way home (no judgement here), fresh strawberries and raspberries add a sweet, summery touch to any day!

You could enjoy them simply with cream, make a cake or eton mess, or blend them into smoothies, jams and cocktails. Whether dipped in chocolate, layered in sweet treats, or tossed into salads, these ruby-red berries bring a taste of sunshine to every dish.

Stonepitts Farm also has plenty of space for you to enjoy a relaxed stroll or even a picnic. There's no better way to celebrate the great British Summer than with a basket of strawberries and a view of the rolling countryside.

ESTATE PLANNING FOR BLENDED FAMILIES

Navigating

Wills and Inheritance

Blended families face unique challenges when it comes to estate planning due to the complex dynamics involved. Protecting the interests of children from previous relationships, providing for a new spouse or partner, and addressing potential conflicts among family members requires thoughtful planning. A well-drafted will ensures that your wishes are clearly outlined. According to Partner, Amanda Wilson, it is essential to consider the following points:

Spousal/civil partner inheritance rights

In the UK, if not left sufficient financial provision in a will, a spouse or civil partner can make a claim against the estate post death.

Provision for children

If you have children from a previous relationship, you may wish to ensure that they are adequately provided for. This

can be achieved through specific provisions in your will. Providing for a new spouse or partner

To provide for your new spouse or partner, while also ensuring that your children receive their fair share, life interest trusts or discretionary trusts can be implemented.

Guardianship of minor children

It is vital to address guardianship arrangements in your will, to ensure that your children will be cared for according to your wishes.

Seek professional guidance

Given the complexities involved in estate planning for blended families, it is recommended to seek professional legal guidance. An experienced solicitor will help you determine the most suitable approach based on your specific circumstances.

A STROLL THROUGH TIME

...Why Knole Park is a Summer Must!

There are walks, and then there’s Knole Park. Nestled in the heart of Sevenoaks, this 1,000-acre deer park is the kind of place that makes you wonder if you’ve stepped into a Jane Austen novel or, at the very least, a particularly charming episode of Countryfile!

This Summer, Knole Park is at its most glorious.

Sunlight filters through ancient oaks, bracken ripples in the breeze and the resident deer roam about and meander with quiet ease.

"Walking through Knole Park in the Summer feels like stepping into a living painting"

Head to Knole Park and take a walk where history, wildlife, and the odd ice cream all come together in perfect harmony. Bring a picnic, wear decent shoes and don’t forget your camera as Knole’s views are the sort that make even a hurried phone snap look like a postcard.

Knole Park is such a stunning place to breathe, explore, and fall in love with the English countryside this Summer!

If you are seeking a gentle amble with a coffee in hand, or even a full-on hike, Knole caters to walkers of all types, from serious ramblers to those who prefer a nice stroll, followed by a cuppa!

Start your adventure at the National Trust café, then head out past the grand façade of Knole House, one of England’s largest and most impressive stately homes. From there, it’s all about choosing your path. Wind your way through shaded woodland trails, or strike out across open grassland where wildlife roam and birds spiral above.

You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the deer up close - although they tend to view humans as either mildly entertaining or mildly annoying, depending on the snack potential. (Tip: don’t feed them - they’re not above stealing your crisps!)

Summertime in Sevenoaks bursts with joy, sunshine and picture-perfect spots just waiting to be captured!

FLOWERS FROM THE FARM

The Benefits of Buying Locally Grown Flowers

Did you know that Sevenoaks is home to a large number of Flower Farmers? Local farmers are coming together to celebrate our homegrown grown blooms at Ightham Mote from 27th to 28th September. This event promises to be an incredible display of flowers in a beautiful location. A jam packed few days full of flowery fun for all the family, including a range of workshops. It will also offer you a chance to meet and support your local flower growers. Knowing where your flowers come from and who grew them means you can ask questions, and know and see the answers for yourselves.

More than ever, we’re mindful of the provenance of our purchases — flowers are no exception. Let’s explore why choosing locally

unique charm of locally grown flora whilst supporting these hard working farmers and their families.

A Greener Alternative

Local flowers reduce your carbon footprint as they have no airmiles.  It is difficult to conceive that a beautiful natural product like flowers could have a big impact on your carbon footprint, but with an imported bouquet attaining the equivalent carbon footprint as a return flight to Paris, it makes you think! Farm fresh, cut to order, with no need of refrigeration or hormone sprays, local flowers reach you faster, ensuring there are at peak freshness, - their colours will be brighter, scents stronger, and give you longer-lasting beauty.

A Conscious Choice

The shift towards British-grown flowers was highlighted during the Coronation of King Charles III in 2003, where only British blooms were used. These were all sourced through Flowers from the Farm. Choosing British flowers is about supporting local businesses, embracing sustainability, beauty, fragrance, and their health benefits.

Sevenoaks growers offer stunning bouquets, event flowers and pick-your-own experiences. They are all listed on the Flowers from the Farm website (www.flowersfromthefarm.com) — making it easy to find the perfect local grower for your needs.

A PERFECT POND PARADISE

Why your garden needs a pond

A pond adds timeless beauty to any garden, adding both elegance and a deeper connection to nature!

A pond isn’t just a hole in the ground filled with water, a welldesigned pond becomes the beating heart of your garden, bringing movement, life and a sense of calm. Plus, it’s also a rather lovely spot to sit with a cuppa, or a glass of wine after a long day!

There’s something undeniably magical about a pond. It’s the way the water catches the light on a lazy summer afternoon, or the gentle ripple of a frog making a splashy entrance.

Whatever the reason, if you’ve been looking at your garden wondering what’s missing, a pond might just be the answer!

When planning a pond, the first thing to think about is the size and the shape. You don’t need something outrageously large; even a modest, kidney-shaped pond, edged with natural stone can have a huge impact.

Curved shapes feel softer and blend better into traditional Kentish garden landscapes, while more formal square or rectangular ponds can bring a contemporary twist - if you’re after a bit of modern chic.

Adding a pond is a genuine upgrade for your outdoor space, especially here in the lush Kent countryside where many gardens are ideal for a touch of natural charm.

A pond creates a sense of calm, inviting a wonderful array of wildlife and can

transform even a simple lawn into a beautiful, living landscape. One of the biggest perks of pond life is creating a wildlife haven. Kent’s gardens are already a haven for birds, bees, and butterflies, but introduce a pond and suddenly you’re welcoming frogs, newts and a whole mini ecosystem. Watching a heron glide down, or spotting tadpoles wriggling about is pure joy and it’s a brilliant way to teach little ones about nature too!

There’s no need to be worried about upkeep as a well-designed pond pretty much looks after itself, especially if you opt for a natural ecosystem pond with the right balance of plants and water movement. A good installer will design it so you don’t spend your weekends knee-deep in algae!!

Speaking of good installers, if you’re thinking about diving into pond life, you’ll want the right crew for the job and in Sevenoaks, it’s hard to beat Joe from JDS Landscapes.

Highly recommended throughout the area, Joe and his brilliant team specialise in creating bespoke ponds tailored to your garden and style. Whether

you’re after a natural wildlife haven or a formal koi pond with all the bells and whistles, Joe knows how to bring those dreams to life.

Not only does he have the skills to design stunning ponds that blend beautifully with the countryside, but Joe and his team are lovely to work with, too - hard working, efficient, knowledgeable and passionate

A POND, WHEN DESIGNED WITH CARE, BECOMES THE SOUL OF YOUR GARDENALIVE, TRANQUIL, AND ENDLESSLY CAPTIVATING!

Grass - A Point of View

As the sun beats down on me, Summer is definitely here

Students sitting on me chatting away

Whilst having a beer.

I hear the sounds of the birds

Tweeting away their beautiful song

As more and more air-fowl

Join their happy throng.

I get mown a lot in summer

When I get a bit too long

That’s part of nature, isn’t it?

Ooh, there’s that man singing a catchy song.

That dog runs over me

Every morning at 9

If I could talk, I would shout

Watch it, you noisy canine.

There’s a bunch of lads coming today

To play footie, they just can’t leave me alone

Those goalposts are my friends, I shout

A creative corner...all about Sevenoaks!

Sevenoaks: Where history, nature and community spirit come together to create an idyllic hometown!

But they can’t hear me over their mobile phone.

‘That’s my Fanta. Give it back!’

I hear two girls fighting

Or it is a can of Coke

That is doing some moonlighting?

Oh, I’m going to be mown again,

The last one of the season.

I was mowed a few weeks ago.

Leave me in peace within reason.

I love the smell

When I have just been cut

The aroma is fragrant and pure

Sometimes for depression I am the cure.
