FOOD CONNECTS US
By Amanda Thul, RD, LD
March is National Nutrition Month and the theme, designated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is Food Connects Us Right now the topic of food can bring so much stress and uncertainty with so many questions and thoughts of “is this the right choice?” “Can I trust food manufacturers?” “I feel guilty for eating my favorite food.” Healthy eating isn’t about being in the weeds, so to say, of micromanaging every ingredient we put in our mouths. I, as a Registered Dietitian, don’t want to see food causing additional stress and anxiety than what we already experience on a daily basis. I want food to be a safe place, not to use as a coping mechanism, but one area of our lives that we can relax. Food is meant to bring us back to our family and our culture even if physically far away. Eating is a way to connect with our bodies to learn what truly makes us feel our best and how to nourish our bodies Food is a way appreciate farmers from all over the world and each person who helps get the food on our plates
At the end of the day, food brings an opportunity to connect us with each other and our own roots I recently went on a trip and met a woman who was originally from India We chatted while our daughters swam together and at some point during the conversation we started talking about food We bonded over our shared love for curry, while this dish isn’t native to my northern Minnesota roots it is a dish that my grandmother started making for her family and is one of my comfort foods. This conversation sparked questions about my grandmother and her connections with this dish which lead me to learn more about my family…all from a conversation with a stranger about food!
Do you have family dishes that have been passed down from generation to generation? Or maybe you’re the starting generation and are creating a dish that will be shared for years to come Today, take time to embrace that food is more than the sum of ingredients Food is a part of us, the food we grow up with and our individual preferences help make us who we are Sharing meals with others is a way to build and strengthen relationships We find food at the center of both joyous celebrations and times of grieving Find ways to celebrate the traditions around food What does food connect you to, and how can you honor that today?
Have More Questions?
I’d love to help you weed through the nutrition pseudoscience and get to the answer

Benefits of Leafy Greens

Basic Greens and WHY They Are Good For You
Common leafy greens include: beet greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, Swiss chard, collards, romaine, cilantro, basil, mixed greens, arugula, dark green leafy lettuce, bok choy
Leafy greens are rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals that help promote bone and heart health They help support the immune system and healthy brain functioning Leafy greens are rich in antioxidants that can help fight inflammation and help protect cells against disease.
HOW MUCH TO EAT
The USDA recommends 1-4 cups of vegetables per day for children and 2-4 cups per day for adults. Leafy greens combined with all other vegetables to help meet this goal.
TIPS TO EAT MORE
Add greens to eggs or a smoothie at breakfast
Make salads with a variety of different greens
Add kale, bok choy, or spinach to stir-fries and soups
Make a pesto with basil and spinach and use as a sauce on pasta, pizza, or a dip
FRESH VS. POWDERED
Each brand of powdered greens have a different variety of vegetables and sometimes fruits that are freeze-dried and ground to a fine powder. Some have added caffeine, prebiotics, probiotics, and other nutrients
If you already eat the recommended amount of vegetables most days of the week, the greens supplement is not needed
Powdered greens can be a convenient way to add vegetables to your day if you fall short on the recommended amount. However, the cost needs to be considered as they are usually more expensive than adding whole vegetables or fruit to your diet
Powdered greens can provide similar nutrition to fresh leafy greens but aren’t superior to fresh greens and should not be used to replace a balanced diet with a variety of fruits and veggies.
The USDA and FDA do not regulate supplements including powdered greens Look for a product that is tested by a third party to verify the supplement contains the stated ingredients. They will usually have a seal on the container.

A CULTURE OF SAFETY
Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.
A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.

NEARMISSEXAMPLES
CAUTION: WET FLOOR!
An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway.
LAB TEST
An employee notices ink smears on the label of a specimen, making it difficult to read She replaces it with a legible label before sending it to the lab
RESPONSE TO A GOOD CATCH
CATCH GO D PROGRAM
MEDICINE INFO
A nurse is preparing to administer an injection, but prior to administration, sees that the medication has expire
PRIVACY CONCERN
A set of EKG strips with a patient’s private information is lying on a worktable An employee spots and conceals it before harm occurs
Events that are classified as “near misses” may not routinely be reported because of time restraints and the belief that they are not of value when, in fact, they are opportunities to learn, implement safer practices, and celebrate
All “Good Catches” or “Near Misses” should be reported in QSTATIM ashleys@humboldthospital.org
QSTATIM reminder
Here is a reminder of a few things to report in QSTATIM...

PHISHING ALERTS: WHAT TO KNOW

Phishing emails are among the most common methods used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Here are some essential tips on how to spot phishing emails:
1Check the sender's email address carefully for any discrepancies or irregularities If you have spotted the Red banner on the top of the email make sure this is a sender you are aware of
2 Look out for urgent or threatening language that pressures you to take immediate action Does it give you fear or try to force you into open the attachments or files?
3 Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, especially from unknown or unexpected sources
4. Verify the legitimacy of requests for personal or confidential information by contacting the sender directly through a trusted channel.
5 Pay attention to spelling and grammar mistakes, as these can often indicate a phishing attempt
By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and our organization from falling victim to phishing scams.
Reporting suspicious emails is a critical step in our efforts to combat phishing attacks effectively. If you receive an email that seems suspicious or requests sensitive information, please report it immediately to our IT team via the Phish alert button in your email. This looks like this.

By promptly reporting phishing attempts, you help us identify and neutralize potential threats before they can cause harm to our organization
Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and your vigilance plays a vital role in safeguarding our Hospital Network/data
Radiology Update
COMFORT. CONFIDENCE.
Your New CT Experience.
HCMH recently installed a new, tablet-based CT scanner from Siemens Healthineers. The systems, called SOMATOM® go.Top, enable the hospital to support routine and advanced CT procedures. They also enhance diagnostic accuracy by providing additional diagnostic information to patients and their physicians
Technologists operate the CT system with a touch-screen tablet and remote control, keeping patients close during exam preparation. This can improve the patient experience, particularly for children and patients who have mobility challenges and need additional support.
In addition, SOMATOM go.Top features automated technology that can take the guesswork out of selecting the optimal radiation dose for diverse patient populations. It’s also equipped with Siemens latest exclusive technologies for optimizing radiation dose, such as Tin Filter Technology. Together, these can reduce unnecessary radiation for a wide range of routine procedures.
Questions about our new CT machine - please reach out to Stacy Clarken, Director of Radiology.

EMS Update
EMS TRANSFERS
As of February 1, we started our partnership with UnityPoint Health Fort Dodge for all patients needing transported out of the Fort Dodge Hospital
Fort Dodge Hospital eliminated their own ambulance service years ago and became dependent on Fort Dodge Fire and Rescue to provide ground transportation Their arrangement began to be more and more difficult as they were also focused on providing critical local 911 services This led Fort Dodge to reach out to surrounding communities to see if any local service would be able to help with patient transfers We have spent the last 12 months evaluating their ask and made the determination that we were willing to take this on As you might know, some of our own Humboldt County patients end up in the Fort Dodge hospital and need transported. We want to be there for them in a timely manner.
In order to take this new work on, we have established a new department to provide this service which includes a provider (Paramedic, EMT or RN) and a driver These individuals will be on-call 24/7 for transfers from Fort Dodge Fort Dodge will contact our ED directly for all patient transport requests We now have 5 ambulances in our fleet, and these will rotate between Humboldt and Fort Dodge One of our ambulances will likely be housed in Fort Dodge to help with response time as many of our new employees for this role live in the Fort Dodge area The most recent ambulance we purchased (see below) came with a new design that we decided to go with You will see our other ambulances transitioning to this new look in the future
The most important thing to know is that this does not impact our Humboldt County/HCMH response team. These are two separate teams working in two separate departments. Here at HCMH, we employ full time paramedics that are available for all 911 calls, transfers and assisting in the emergency room. We also continue to have a full team of PRN EMTs and drivers. We will never compromise this team to help the Fort Dodge team.
A special thanks to Jordan and his team for the work they do and the difference they make in each life they touch. We are fortunate to have such an amazing team of experts. If you or a loved one needs unexpected care, our EMS and ER teams are without a doubt, the best around.
If you have any questions about this service line or work, please contact Jordan Erie (Director of EMS).

There are numerous opportunities to experience the joy of giving to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The HCMH Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax deductible corporation, formed in 1990 by a group of caring citizens.
Gifts donated through the Foundation are used to help replace aging equipment and facilities with state of the art medical technology, and to subsidize important health care programs and services for HCMH and Humboldt County.
Due to the high demand of our bus we are currently raising funds for a second form of transportation for our patients and residents.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.
What is REACH and how does it work?
The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need
To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid
Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information
Criteria for application and approval
Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant
Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000
Criteria considered in evaluating includes:
Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively
Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills
Loss of family income
An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.
Frequency of application.
How are funds distributed?
The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant
For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.
How can I contribute?
Contributions can be made in a number of ways:
A one-time check or cash
$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction
One-time payroll deduction gift
Questions - reach out to

This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.
I wish to participate by contributing:
$ through payroll deduction (ONE-TIME)
$ per pay period for one year (suggested $2/pay period)
$ one-time check or cash Make checks payable to: HCMH Foundation

" I had brought my son in with a hurt ankle and he couldn’t walk on it. When I arrived I went in to grab a wheelchair and Mike followed me to my car and helped my son into the wheelchair and wheeled him in for me How amazing is that!! We were seen right away with so much respect and care from each staff member in the ER The nurse, Tawny, also made sure my son had an ice pack and got him a pop and made sure he was comfortable until the Dr was able to come in I appreciate every staff member in the ER that went above and beyond to care for my son You all are AMAZING!"
"Lili and Odalis are really friendly, happy, and knew all the information for me."

Laurie is always interested in what I have to say She takes her job seriously I can always count on her to give the best advise. I have come a very long way with Laur as my therapist. I started out therapy with reservations. I had tried therapies years ago and the didn't believe me or thought I was delusional about certain topics. Now I am more assertive and no longer afraid of my own shadow.
"Amie & Bri were very professional in the CT scan room - but very friendly and anxious to answer all questions I had."
"As a transplant from Northern California 2.5 years ago, I had concerns about new medical coverage and care! I have NEVER had a negative issue of any kind with my care and treatment. The personnel have ALL been courteous, friendly, and concerned about my wellbeing, especially those who are now treating me in Physical Therapy! They each explain the treatment I am getting so I understand why I get weights attached to my ankles! I'm a very happy Humbolt Hospital patient!"
"Mike (Glover) always gets 10 stars"
"Jonathan, Erin, and the rest of the staff ROCK.It's a pleasure to deal with Jonathan and his concerns to make me better."

"I have used several Infusion Centers over the years and this nicest and most helpful of all. The staff and facility are the best. Thank You"
