A Message From Our CEO
As we celebrate 55 years of Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH), I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come since opening our doors in 1970 The dedication captured in those early photos laid the foundation for who we are today
This milestone is not just about the progress of a hospital it’s about the strength of a community that has supported, trusted, and believed in us for more than five decades Every step forward has been made possible by the commitment our employees show to one another and to our patients each day That promise has built lasting trust and created opportunities for us to continue growing
As we celebrate 55 years, we honor our past while looking ahead with confidence and excitement for the future of healthcare in Humboldt County. Thank you for allowing us to be more than your hospital your partner in health and in life.

WEEKNIGHT DINNER
Featuring: Amanda Thul, RD, LD
It is that time of year again! Summer is over, kids are back in school, and evenings are filled with events and gatherings. The challenge to get a nourishing meal on the table for dinner just escalated from a minor inconvenience to American Ninja Warrior My family tried ramen made in the slow cooker this past year and it was an easy win. Lean protein – check, colorful vegetables – check, balanced meal with minimal prep timedouble check! I usually grab a bag of frozen broccoli to heat up for a quick side. I hope you enjoy this easy-to-make, balanced meal as much as my family does, and it makes a homemade weeknight dinner a little more manageable
SLOW COOKER BEEF RAMEN
1 pound ground beef, 90% lean
1 cup matchstick carrots
1 medium red bell pepper sliced
2-3 large scallions roughly chopped
3 cloves garlic minced
½ cup low sodium soy sauce
1.5 Tablespoons brown sugar
14 25 ounces reduced sodium beef stock
2 packs ramen noodles, flavor packets discarded
Brown the beef in a large skillet over medium heat until cooked through. Drain any grease, if necessary
Combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and beef stock and mix In a 6-quart slow cooker add the carrots, pepper, green onions, and soy sauce mixture Cook on low for 4-6 hours About 30 minutes before serving, add the dry noodles Stir occasionally to get them covered in the sauce and cook evenly When the noodles are cooked, enjoy with a veggie of your choice
I’d love to help you weed through the nutrition pseudoscience and get to the answer

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your child's backpack is both safe and comfortable for school.
Choose the Right Backpack:
Select a backpack that is appropriately sized for the child's age and size It should not be wider or longer than the child's torso and should sit 2 inches below the shoulder blades to waist level
Lighten the Load:
Ensure the backpack itself is lightweight A good guideline is that the backpack should not exceed 10% of the child's body weight when packed
Organize the Contents:
Use compartments to distribute weight evenly Heavier items should be placed closer to the child's back, and sharp or bulky objects should be packed away from the back
Adjust the Straps:
The shoulder straps should be padded and adjustable to ensure a snug fit Both shoulder straps should be used to distribute weight evenly across the back
Use Additional Features:
Waist straps or a hip belt can help transfer some of the weight to the hips and reduce strain on the back
Pack Smart:
Encourage your child to only carry what is necessary for the day to reduce the weight of the backpack
Lift and Wear Properly:
Teach your child to bend at the knees and use both hands when lifting the backpack onto their shoulders They should avoid twisting while lifting
Check Regularly:
Periodically check the backpack to ensure it's not causing any discomfort or pain. Adjust straps as needed to maintain a comfortable fit
Encourage Proper Use:
Remind your child to use both shoulder straps and not sling the backpack over one shoulder, which can strain muscles.
Seek Help When Needed:
If your child complains of persistent pain or discomfort related to carrying the backpack, consult with a healthcare professional.

Easing Transitions: Managing Stress During Change
As summer winds down and schedules shift, many of us feel the pressure of transition whether it’s students heading back to school, families juggling busier calendars, or adults preparing for a demanding fall season Change, even positive change, can bring stress The good news: with a few intentional steps, transitions can become opportunities for growth and resilience.
Why Transitions Can Feel Stressful:
Shifts in routine can disrupt sleep, energy, and focus
New expectations often bring added responsibilities
Uncertainty about what lies ahead may increase worry
Adjusting takes time be patient with yourself and others
Three Ways
to Navigate Transitions with
1 Create Predictable Routines
Care:
A steady rhythm helps reduce anxiety Whether it’s setting regular bedtimes, family meal rituals, or daily check-ins with yourself, consistency builds a sense of stability.
2. Practice Grounding Strategies
When you feel overwhelmed, use simple techniques to stay present:
Pause for three deep breaths
Try the “5-4-3-2-1” grounding exercise (notice 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste)
Step outside for a few minutes of fresh air
3. Set Healthy Boundaries
It’s easy to overcommit during times of change. Saying “no” when your plate is full or protecting downtime isn’t selfish—it’s essential for well-being
For Families
and Communities
Encourage open conversations about feelings during transitions. Kids, teens, and adults alike benefit when stress is normalized, and support is offered Asking “What feels hardest about this change?” can open meaningful dialogue.
Mental Health Reminder: Transitions aren’t just hurdles—they can also be opportunities to grow stronger habits and deeper connections. Taking small, intentional steps now can ease the stress and set you up for a steadier season ahead.

Measles (MMR) Vaccine
According to CDC data, receiving two doses of the MMR vaccine provides the highest level of protection, at 97% effectiveness. Even if only one dose is received, protection is still extremely high, at 93% effectiveness.
MEASLES
INITIAL SYMPTOMS
(7-21 days post exposure)
High Fever
Cough/Runny Nose
Red Eyes
RASH
(3-5 days after fever onset)
Small bluish spots surrounded by red region on the inside of cheek
A red blotchy rash begins on the face at the hairline and progresses downward/outward toward hands & feet
TRAVEL
(21 days before onset)
Have you traveled anywhere in the last 21 days where measles cases have been reported?
MMR VACCINATION
The best way to prevent measles is to get the MMR vaccine.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE MEASLES
Call your healthcare provider and tell them you may have measles. They will give you instructions on how to be seen safely. You should NOT sit in the waiting room or come through the main entrance because if you do have measles anyone in that area who is not vaccinated (like babies) will get sick. Stay home until you see your health care provider.
If you have questions about measles, call Public Health at 515-332-2492

A CULTURE OF SAFETY
Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.
A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.
NEARMISSEXAMPLES
CAUTION: WET FLOOR!
An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway
LAB TEST
An employee notices ink smears on the label of a specimen, making it difficult to read She replaces it with a legible label before sending it to the lab
RESPONSE TO A GOOD CATCH
CATCH GO D PROGRAM
MEDICINE INFO
A nurse is preparing to administer an injection, but prior to administration, sees that the medication has expire
PRIVACY CONCERN
A set of EKG strips with a patient’s private information is lying on a worktable An employee spots and conceals it before harm occurs
Events that are classified as “near misses” may not routinely be reported because of time restraints and the belief that they are not of value when, in fact, they are opportunities to learn, implement safer practices, and celebrate
All “Good Catches” or “Near Misses” should be reported in QSTATIM alyssar@humboldthospital.org

PHISHING ALERTS: WHAT TO KNOW
Phishing emails are among the most common methods used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Here are some essential tips on how to spot phishing emails:
1Check the sender's email address carefully for any discrepancies or irregularities If you have spotted the Red banner on the top of the email make sure this is a sender you are aware of
2 Look out for urgent or threatening language that pressures you to take immediate action Does it give you fear or try to force you into open the attachments or files?
3 Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, especially from unknown or unexpected sources
4. Verify the legitimacy of requests for personal or confidential information by contacting the sender directly through a trusted channel.
5 Pay attention to spelling and grammar mistakes, as these can often indicate a phishing attempt
By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and our organization from falling victim to phishing scams.
Reporting suspicious emails is a critical step in our efforts to combat phishing attacks effectively. If you receive an email that seems suspicious or requests sensitive information, please report it immediately to our IT team via the Phish alert button in your email. This looks like this.
By promptly reporting phishing attempts, you help us identify and neutralize potential threats before they can cause harm to our organization
Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and your vigilance plays a vital role in safeguarding our Hospital Network/data

Long Term Care
This month we "traveled" to Kenya, Africa for our Culture Day. They enjoyed an authentic sponge cake made by our own kitchen staff at HCMH We also had lots of items from Africa they were able to see Our night nurse Kris E went there on a mission trip as a nurse a while back and she brought in all the items for our day.
On the 18 we had 4 birthdays to celebrate, one resident turned 104 on the 19 , Bertha Wagner At the celebration we had musical entertainment by one of our own CNAs, Adeline Reynolds and her mother Adeline sang as her mother played piano and she also sang songs as she played guitar. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the performance. th th
Assisted Living
Springvale Assisted Living recently received a much-needed facelift with beautiful new exterior landscaping Last month, the old plants and shrubs many of which had been generously donated and lovingly planted by Tammy were removed to make way for vibrant, updated greenery. The transformation has given Springvale a refreshing new look, and our residents are already enjoying the cheerful views right outside their windows
HCMH Team Rescues Kitty!
It seems a little kitten hitched a ride to Humboldt on the MRI truck the other day. When Andie and Morgan were leaving through the ER doors, they heard loud meowing coming from the truck. With quick teamwork, they gathered a crew (Andie, Morgan, Tawny, Joey, Erin) and managed to rescue the tiny hitchhiker!
Erin brought him to the pharmacy where we checked him over, and Skyler came to the rescue with some tuna which he loved. Later Lindy called the vet and got him an appointment, despite all odds he’s eating, drinking and purring He’s been dubbed “MuRI (like Murray) since he was found on the MRI truck - perfect blend of his rescue story and a great cat name!
Thank you healthcare heroes for not only taking care of the people in our community but our furry friends too!

Increased PTO Bank: Full-time and part-time employees can now accrue up to 360 hours of PTO in their PTO bank
Part-time employees will now accrue PTO at the same rate as full-time employees:
0–4.99 years of service: 8.55% (example below)
5–9.99 years of service: 10.68%
10+ years of service: 12.82%
Early Use of PTO for Specific Closures: Employees (FT and PT) may use accrued PTO during their first 90 days if their department is closed due to a holiday or inclement weather (Note: The 90-day service requirement still applies for all other PTO usage)
PTO Accrual Based on Hours Worked: PTO accrues based on hours worked, up to 80 hours worked per pay period.
EXAMPLES:
A full-time employee (with less than 5 years of service) who works five, 8-hour shifts per week (40 hours/week) would accrue 6.84 hours of PTO per pay period. This is 177 hours annually (assuming hours worked each week are the same all year) OR 4.45 weeks of vacation a year!
A part-time employee (with 7 years of service) who works three, 8-hour shifts per week (24 hours/week) would accrue 512 hours of PTO per pay period This is 133 hours annually (assuming hours worked each week are the same all year) OR 55 weeks of vacation a year!
A full-time employee (with 11 years of service) who works three, 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours/week) would accrue 9.23 hours of PTO per pay period. This is 240 hours annually (assuming hours worked each week are the same all year) OR 6.67 weeks of vacation a year!
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Each year administration carefully reviews your feedback through the employee engagement survey. Thanks to your input we’ve made several enhancements to our PTO Policy These updates are designed to give you more flexibility and support in managing your time, both at work and in your personal life.
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides free, confidential and short-term counseling to employees or family members as part of their HCMH benefits.
As an employee of HCMH you are urged to use this confidential consultation program This program provides evaluations, counseling and referral of employees and eligible family members.
We will provide a maximum of one (1) evaluation session and three (3) counseling sessions at the expense of HCMH. When a referral is necessary and appropriate to another discipline or care provider for ongoing therapy, chargers for that professional consultation and/or service is the responsibility of the employee.
Voluntary acceptance of a treatment program will not be a valid reason for continued poor job performance. It will not result in any special regulations, privileges, or exemptions regarding job performance or requirements.

There are numerous opportunities to experience the joy of giving to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The HCMH Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax deductible corporation, formed in 1990 by a group of caring citizens.
Gifts donated through the Foundation are used to help replace aging equipment and facilities with state of the art medical technology, and to subsidize important health care programs and services for HCMH and Humboldt County.
Due to the high demand of our bus we are currently raising funds for a second form of transportation for our patients and residents.
Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.
What is REACH and how does it work?
The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need
To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid
Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information
Criteria for application and approval
Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant
Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000
Criteria considered in evaluating includes:
Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively
Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills
Loss of family income
An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.
Frequency of application.
How are funds distributed?
The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant
For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.
How can I contribute?
Contributions can be made in a number of ways:
A one-time check or cash
$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction
One-time payroll deduction gift
Questions - reach out to
This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.
I wish to participate by contributing:
$ through payroll deduction (ONE-TIME)
$ per pay period for one year (suggested $2/pay period)

All-Star Cards NEW! All-Star Cards
What are “All-Star Cards”? These cards have had many names over the years but the principle of them remain the same
This is a recognition and reward program designed for employees to give praise when another employee goes above and beyond our Key Service Behaviors (KSBs) and Values. Please make sure to fill it out with the specific occurrence you noticed.
Example: “I observed [name of teammate] yesterday walking a patient to their car in the rain with an umbrella”.
Fill out when you observe an employee going above the standards set with our Key Service Behaviors and Values.
DO give specific examples – no generalized statements please DO fill out completely: including first and last name and department.
DO NOT take advantage of this tool - it’s specifically created to give people recognition for going ABOVE and BEYOND their daily duties not what is already expected of them.
Once filled out, place in our recognition boxes, Alison Angstrom’s mailbox, or slide under her office door.
YOU ASKED, WE LISTENED! New “tear away” feature so you can keep your card after you’ve used the $2 value.
