BIKE SAFELY AND ENJOY YOUR RIDE!

With about 80 million bicyclists sharing the road with motorized vehicles, it is vital bicyclist – and drivers – take some safety precautions.

CYCLISTS, CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

Always inspect your bike prior to riding:

The seat should be adjusted to the proper height and locked in place

Make certain all parts are secure and working properly

Check that the tires are inflated properly

Make sure the bike is equipped with reflectors on the rear, front, pedals and spokes

A horn or bell, a rear-view mirror and a bright headlight also are recommended

PLAN TO BE SEEN

Make certain drivers can see you

Wear neon, fluorescent or other bright clothing

Whenever possible, ride during the day

If you must ride at night, wear reflective clothing and use flashing lights

WEAR A HELMET

Helmets appropriate for bicycling should be worn by everyone – adults and children – on every bike ride regardless of length of the ride. Make certain the helmet is certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission

FOLLOW THESE RULES OF THE ROAD

Get acquainted with traffic laws; bicyclists must follow the same rules as motorists

Ride single-file in the direction of traffic

Remain alert, keep your head up and look around; watch for opening car doors and other hazards

Use hand signals when turning and use extra care at intersections

Never hitch onto cars

Before entering traffic, stop and look left, right, left again and over your shoulder

Mental Health on TikTok: Helpful or Harmful?

TikTok has become a major source of mental health content, with hashtags like #mentalhealthtips and #anxiety reaching billions of views While this increased visibility helps normalize conversations about mental well-being, it also brings a risk: misinformation.

A recent analysis conducted by PlushCare reviewed 500 mental health-related TikTok videos and found:

83.7% of advice shared was misleading

14.2% of videos contained potentially harmful content

100% of ADHD-related content was misleading

941% of bipolar disorder and 903% of depression-related videos were inaccurate

Only 9% of content creators had verified medical or mental health credentials

Why This Matters

Social media is not a substitute for professional care. While many creators intend to help, self-diagnosing based on inaccurate or anecdotal content can lead to:

Misunderstanding symptoms

Delaying appropriate treatment

Following advice that may be ineffective or harmful

How to Stay Informed Online

Before acting on what you see:

Check the creator’s credentials

Cross-reference advice with reputable sources like CDC, APA, or WHO

Avoid self-diagnosing based on short-form conte

Seek professional evaluation if you’re experiencin symptoms

Resources Available to You

Resources Available to You

If you're looking for reliable mental health support or information, consider the following trusted resources:

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Free support groups, educational resources, and a helpline at nami.org or 1-800-950-NAMI.

MentalHealth.gov: Offers information on signs of mental illness, how to get help, and ways to support others

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 for free, confidential support 24/7

Employers’ EAP programs: check with your HR office

Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all, and your needs may evolve over time. Be patient with yourself, stay open to different approaches, and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength. With the right support, you can take meaningful steps toward healing and personal growth.

Final Thought

Social media can be a helpful conversation starter, but it should never replace licensed mental health care. Protect your mental health by being critical of what you see online and reaching out for qualified support when needed.

A CULTURE OF SAFETY

Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.

A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.

NEARMISSEXAMPLES

CAUTION: WET FLOOR!

An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway.

LAB TEST

An employee notices ink smears on the label of a specimen, making it difficult to read She replaces it with a legible label before sending it to the lab

RESPONSE TO A GOOD CATCH

CATCH GO D PROGRAM

MEDICINE INFO

A nurse is preparing to administer an injection, but prior to administration, sees that the medication has expire

PRIVACY CONCERN

A set of EKG strips with a patient’s private information is lying on a worktable An employee spots and conceals it before harm occurs

Events that are classified as “near misses” may not routinely be reported because of time restraints and the belief that they are not of value when, in fact, they are opportunities to learn, implement safer practices, and celebrate

All “Good Catches” or “Near Misses” should be reported in QSTATIM ashleys@humboldthospital.org

PHISHING ALERTS: WHAT TO KNOW

Phishing emails are among the most common methods used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Here are some essential tips on how to spot phishing emails:

1Check the sender's email address carefully for any discrepancies or irregularities If you have spotted the Red banner on the top of the email make sure this is a sender you are aware of

2 Look out for urgent or threatening language that pressures you to take immediate action Does it give you fear or try to force you into open the attachments or files?

3 Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, especially from unknown or unexpected sources

4. Verify the legitimacy of requests for personal or confidential information by contacting the sender directly through a trusted channel.

5 Pay attention to spelling and grammar mistakes, as these can often indicate a phishing attempt

By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and our organization from falling victim to phishing scams.

Reporting suspicious emails is a critical step in our efforts to combat phishing attacks effectively. If you receive an email that seems suspicious or requests sensitive information, please report it immediately to our IT team via the Phish alert button in your email. This looks like this.

By promptly reporting phishing attempts, you help us identify and neutralize potential threats before they can cause harm to our organization

Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and your vigilance plays a vital role in safeguarding our Hospital Network/data

There are numerous opportunities to experience the joy of giving to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The HCMH Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax deductible corporation, formed in 1990 by a group of caring citizens.

Gifts donated through the Foundation are used to help replace aging equipment and facilities with state of the art medical technology, and to subsidize important health care programs and services for HCMH and Humboldt County.

Due to the high demand of our bus we are currently raising funds for a second form of transportation for our patients and residents.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.

What is REACH and how does it work?

The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need

To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid

Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information

Criteria for application and approval

Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant

Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000

Criteria considered in evaluating includes:

Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively

Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills

Loss of family income

An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.

Frequency of application.

How are funds distributed?

The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant

For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.

How can I contribute?

Contributions can be made in a number of ways:

A one-time check or cash

$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction

One-time payroll deduction gift

Questions - reach out to

This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.

I wish to participate by contributing:

$ through payroll deduction (ONE-TIME)

$ per pay period for one year (suggested $2/pay period)

$ one-time check or cash Make checks payable to: HCMH Foundation

Teresa Reinig-Olesch

“On March 17th I returned home from the hospital and went about my day as usual. My son was home with me. I have diabetes which requires close monitoring of my insulin and blood sugars. Teresa and I had arranged that she would come by and drop off some items to me before she headed to work. When she arrived that morning, my blood sugar was so low I was unconscious.

My son had not been able to wake me up. Teresa immediately took action and called the ambulance. When the ambulance arrived, they were able to get me to the hospital and address my blood sugar. Teresa has checked on me several times since, and there is no way to thank her enough.”

Congratulations Teresa, on becoming a Humboldt County

While I was in the ER Dr. Worthington found a problem I did not originally come in for. He expressed his concerns about the situation and took care of that plus the original reason I came in for before discharging me. His concern for both situations showed me he cared. Every single person that I came in contact with, from registration to radiology, was kind and helpful. The hospital was clean and crisp and welcoming. During my CT, Tammy made me feel comfortable, safe and informed on my care. 10/10 recommend HCMH to anyone and ill be doing all my care here moving forward!

Excellent care. Shari and Dr. Worthington were very thorough.

Gabe is good with therapy. Very understanding.

Humboldt has the best occupational and physical therapy around I'm a firm believer in it that it does help and it has even the gals when you come in to check in they're very gracious a big thank you to everybody that has been helping me it's greatly appreciated I felt both individuals that i had interaction with listened intently to my concerns. I was certainly glad these services were available on a weekend. ARNP Carlson prescribed some medications for my symptoms...hopefully that will be care i need moving forward..

Dr Worthington was amazing The whole care team did a fabulous job to address my problem Great asset for Humboldt to have an ER staff like this

Katie P made my appointment pleasant ? I liked how she showed me the graphs during my tests

Taylor and Brian are rock stars!

Your ER team does an excellent job and are to be commended.

Staff went above and beyond to help me. I had an ankle concern with a great deal of difficulty walking. ER staff brought my car from the upper parking lot to the garage so I could drive home.

As an employee of HCMH I am proud to be part of such a great team. Especially when I have to be on the receiving end of care.

The infusion team are great! So kind, so positive. Always a joy to go in for my medication!

Katie (Legvold) is awesome and I look forward to our sessions together.

I am very grateful for the Walk-In Clinic. I would have had to take a half day off work to see someone during regular office hours. The Walk-In Clinic is a God-send, and my issue was resolved quickly! THANK YOU!!!

Jen at the front desk is always great.

Mrs. DeWinter is very helpful and kind.

Tony the bus driver is a great asset. Always helpful and caring as well as punctual.

Jonathan is one OT that I deeply appreciate & I'm so grateful that he works at HCMH.

We were pleased with the attention our son received in the ER. Dr. Worthington was great. Thank you to all.
