REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYLE

Apply the famous 3Rs to your daily life. Use a refillable water bottle. Recycle when you can. Reduce by purchasing what you need, not what you want

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WATER

Collect rainwater for plants Shut off the faucet when brushing your teeth and shaving Keep showers to 5 minutes or less Fix leaks

LIGHTS OUT

We all know we should turn off the lights when we’re not in the room But did you know that in the case of low-consumption light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, the moment they are switched on consumes a lot of energy? If you are going to return to the room in less than 20 minutes, it is better to leave them on.

GREEN EATING

When eating incorporate more green foods like green apples, kiwi, green grapes, green beans, broccoli, leafy greens, avocado, green peppers There are all kinds of green fruits and vegetables you can add into your day Aim for at least one green fruit and one green vegetable per day in March.

Mission Slim Possible will end March 2nd. As of today, HCMH has 2 teams with the maximum points. This week the goal is to have 2 hours or less of screen time outside of work Good luck to our HCMH teams to finish strong!

EATING DISORDER AWARENESS

Eating disorder awareness week was the last week of February. I partnered with one of our mental health counselors, Nolan Vitzthum, and we shared information on eating disorders to raise awareness and resources. If you missed this, check out the HCMH facebook page!

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives Someone dies every 52 minutes as a direct result of an eating disorder Fear of weight gain, feeling like one is overeating, feelings of guilt, thinking about dieting, and a desire for thinness are predictive of eating disorder severity.

Our society right now is so fixated on health and wellness to a point that it can be harmful There is so much fear and negativity involving food We hear these very polarized messages that food is either good or bad and if we eat a bad food then we’re doomed. The impact of our diets on our health has been taken to an unnecessary extreme. It can cause so much stress, shame and guilt especially if you eat the foods you’re not “supposed” to or unable to afford or don’t have time to prepare the “good” foods you’re supposed to be eating One study found that females who dieted moderately were 5 times more likely to develop an eating disorder and those who practiced extreme restriction with their eating were 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who did not diet.

How we talk about food and our eating habits, whether our own self talk or to others, makes an impact on our own physical and mental health even if we don’t realize it. Not to mention impacting the health and wellbeing of the ones around us listening to the negative food talk (especially kiddos!) It’s time to change the conversation around food!

I’d love to help you weed through the nutrition pseudoscience and get to the answer Reach me at the hospital

Have More Questions?

Instead of saying...

-Junk/bad/unhealthy foods

-Good/healthy foods

-I shouldn’t be eating these chips

-Do you know how much sugar is in that candy bar?!

-Starting today I’m not eating junk food

-I’m so bad for eating French fries

-I shouldn’t be eating. My stomach is too big already

-Wow you’ve lost a lot of weight!

Try this instead...

-Fun foods

-Nourishing foods

-I’m really enjoying these chips. Eating fun foods with nourishing foods makes my. meals more satisfying

-Sugar gives our bodies energy and adding protein will help fill me up

-When I regularly have fun foods, I feel in control when I’m around them

-I know all foods have a place in a balanced diet and my moral value isn’t determined from my food choices

-My body deserves to be nourished no matter what size it is

-Compliment on something NOT appearance related

Creating a more neutral relationship with food removes morality from your food choices, increases pleasure with eating, and puts you back in control around food. Helping patients establish food freedom is something I specialize in. It is never too early to seek help for disordered eating.

If you are often preoccupied with thoughts about food, are a frequent dieter, have little pleasure in eating, or feel guilt and shame with your diet, please give me a call. I’d be happy to sit down and work with you to help you have a pleasant relationship with food. Reach out to me at 515-332-7608.

We were amazed at the number and variety of quilts she presented during her program for the residents last week - until she mentioned she had many more and several unfinished! We look forward to another quilt show with Sherry in the future!

HC Public Health update

February is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

When screening for colorectal cancer there are two options including a stool-based test kit which detects cancerous changes in a person’s stool. These kits can be completed in a person’s home and mailed by the doctors’ office or lab. Stool based kits can be repeated every 1-3 years and a colonoscopy is used to follow up on any positive results.

The second screening option includes a colonoscopy, which is the most used and typically covered by health insurance. If no concerns are found on an individual’s colonoscopy, they are repeated every 10 years If polyps or other areas are identified on a colonoscopy it may be recommend to repeat the procedure sooner

Certain individuals may need to think about screening earlier than age 45.

This includes:

Those who have blood relatives with a history of colon cancer or certain types of polyps

A personal history of colon cancer or polyps

Those with inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s

Individuals with a personal or family history with genetic conditions linked to colorectal cancer including familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome

Individuals who have had previous radiation treatment to the belly or pelvis area

If your note sure if, when, and what type of screening method is good for you the Colorectal Cancer Alliance has a great quiz to help you know your options.

The quiz can be found at wwwcolorectalcancerorg/screeningquiz

Colon cancer, if found early, can be highly treatable. Talk with your provider today to discuss your screening.

Iowa ranks 8th highest in the rate of new cases of colorectal cancers in the U.S. Colon cancer is a cancer that we can screen for. Current recommendations for screening the public include starting at age 45 and your Primary Care Physician can discuss the best screening tool for you.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.

What is REACH and how does it work?

The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need

To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid

Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information

Criteria for application and approval

Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant

Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000

Criteria considered in evaluating includes:

Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively

Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills

Loss of family income

An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.

Frequency of application.

How are funds distributed?

The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant

For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.

How can I contribute?

Contributions can be made in a number of ways:

A one-time check or cash

$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction

One-time payroll deduction gift

Questions - reach out to Foundation Dir. or HR

This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.

I wish to participate by contributing:

$ through payroll deduction (ONE-TIME)

$ per pay period for one year (suggested $2/pay period)

$ one-time check or cash Make checks payable to: HCMH Foundation

Going to the ER is obviously never a fun thing I am so thankful to everyone who was there Sunday night! I was helped immediately and was seen very quickly by the Doctor Everyone was caring, compassionate, understanding, and great to work with! I can't thank them enough for taking such great care of me! What a great asset to have in our community!

Love working with Laurie and Nicole Lee Both are very kind and listen and the nurse Hannah is great along with Caitlyn at the front desk

Everyone was very caring and compassionate They listened to my concerns and checked my records to see that I had had this situation before Many thanks to Dr Worthington, Anne Magruder and Joy who started me off There was a shift change so there were a couple other girls that helped They did everything just right!!

Cathy and Whitney are caring and concerned when doing infusions for me They are the greatest

From Lindsay at the front to the nurses, nursing students and Dr Adams every one was great to deal with for situation Probably best experience at a hospital

I really appreciate how Jen (DeWinter) downloads and prints off the reports for my patients ahead of time, and I don't even worry about patients who see Jen for diabetes and trust her judgement and know the patients are taken care of

Courtney Palmer needs a raise because she is FANTASTIC

"Our experience was great Jessie is amazing, my son adores her"

"They all were amazing and quick. Kenzie was so thoughtful and helpful!"

"They all were amazing and quick. Kenzie was so thoughtful and helpful! Jen C and Darla did an excellent job at registration and the EKG. Love the family atmosphere at Humboldt hospital.”

“A huge thank you to Joy, Brittney, Angie, and the rest of the Staff that cared for me during my time at HCMH!”

All the providers were excellent - Dr. Vande Zande, Joy, Connie, and the individual who first started the process (sorry I don't remember her name) all were extremely professional and very concerned about my condition. Thanks to everyone.

"Brian is exceptional."

"Courtney was excellent. She explained everything that I didn't understand. I have nothing but good things to say about HCMH."

"Jill was very courteous I was running late, and they were very kind about it, still managed to get me in right when I got there. Courtney was very professional and kind. Being an employee at the hospital they could have just gotten me in and gotten me out quickly, but instead she spent time answering my questions and visiting. Really put my mind at ease!! "

" I've had two people tell me this week after their experiences with the EMTs they have recently had that they were very impressed with the help they were given."

Employee Of The Moment

EOM Cards

This is a recognition and reward program designed for employees to give praise when another employee goes above and beyond our Key Service Behaviors and Values. Please make sure to fill it out with the specific occurrence you noticed.

Example: “I observed you yesterday walking a patient to their car in the rain with an umbrella”.

Fill out when you observe an employee going above the standards set with our Key Service Behaviors and Values.

DO give specific examples – no generalized statements please.

DO fill out completely: including first and last name and department.

DO NOT take advantage of this tool - it’s specifically created to give people recognition for going ABOVE and BEYOND their daily duties.

Once filled out, place in our recognition boxes, Alison Angstrom’s mailbox, or slide under her office door.
