MAKE 2025 YOUR YEAR

I’m writing this in December and I can already see it. You decided this would be the year. You’d cut out a food group because it was the cause of everything wrong in your life. You’d drink your weight in water each day. You’d hit 1200 calories and consider your nutrition “done” for the day You’d never lay your eyes on sugar or fat again You’d climb the hill of “perfect healthy eating” and be victorious And here you are…3 weeks into the year. And you’ve failed. And I’m here to tell you not only is that okay, that’s good. Forgive yourself. Congratulate yourself on avoiding putting your body and brain through un-needed restriction and disordered eating.

Why, you ask? Here is what we know restricting calories too low can be damaging to your body and your health. Hitting a calorie goal doesn’t automatically mean you’re eating more healthful. Cutting out whole food groups is only appropriate in very specific people and you probably are not one of them. Your body needs sugar and fat.

What can you do instead of getting caught in the trap of diet fads and subsequent self-blame that only reinforces unhealthy eating habits and beliefs? Redefine your definition of healthy. Focus on variety and portions. Stop labeling food “good” or “bad” so you can release the hold those foods have on your psychological wellbeing.

Pay attention to your body and find what foods and amount of these foods make you feel the best. Make one small change at a time so you can feel successful with each small win or use it as a learning experience to figure out what does/doesn’t work for you. I know these things are not as exhilarating as a dietary restriction, they’re the opposite of everything that diet culture tells us is the “right way to eat healthy” These things, though, are the things that make a difference, improve your physical health without sacrificing your mental health, social life, or enjoying your favorite foods.

So yes, make 2025 your year. But make it your year to redefine what “healthy” really means I’ll be here each month to talk about just that And if you would like to chat in person or would like some personalized help, come see me at HCMH. Cheers to 2025!

Winter can be a treacherous season, and it’s important to take precautions to avoid slips and falls. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

Appropriate footwear in inclement weather is a must. Rubber waterproof soles will give more traction and keep you warm and dry

Use special care when entering and exiting buildings or vehicles; use handrails or the vehicle for support

Look ahead and pay attention to the path when you walk. Don’t text or read while walking.

A cleared path for driving and walking may not be available –Plan ahead and give yourself extra time.

Walk in designated walkways and avoid shortcuts. Avoid uneven surfaces if possible Avoid steps or curbs with ice on them

Watch for slippery floors when you enter or exit any buildings Use door mats to help remove snow and water from footwear.

50% of people injured in slip and fall injuries are walking on level ground when they slip!* It may sound silly –but if you can’t avoid walking on a slippery surface… walk like a penguin.

Winterize your home:

Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows

Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls

Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks

Check your heating systems.

Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside

Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys

Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available.

If you do not have working smoke detectors, install one inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year

Preventcarbon monoxidepoisoning emergencies.

Install a battery-operated or battery backup CO detector to alert you of the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check or change the battery when you change your clocks in the fall and spring

Learn the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion

A CULTURE OF SAFETY

Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.

A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.

NEARMISSEXAMPLES

CAUTION: WET FLOOR!

An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway.

LAB TEST

An employee notices ink smears on the label of a specimen, making it difficult to read She replaces it with a legible label before sending it to the lab

RESPONSE TO A GOOD CATCH

CATCH GO D PROGRAM

MEDICINE INFO

A nurse is preparing to administer an injection, but prior to administration, sees that the medication has expire

PRIVACY CONCERN

A set of EKG strips with a patient’s private information is lying on a worktable An employee spots and conceals it before harm occurs

Events that are classified as “near misses” may not routinely be reported because of time restraints and the belief that they are not of value when, in fact, they are opportunities to learn, implement safer practices, and celebrate

All “Good Catches” or “Near Misses” should be reported in QSTATIM ashleys@humboldthospital.org

QSTATIM reminder

Here is a reminder of a few things to report in QSTATIM...

ADMISSIONS

Report in QSTATIM if you have a patient leave AMA (Against Medical Advice)

EMPLOYEE

INJURY

Report in QSTATIM if an employee is injured while working.

MEDICATION

Medication incident (not following the 5 right). Right patient, time, dose, medication, or route.

SERVICE RECOVERY

If you utilized service recovery - make sure to report in QSTATIM..

FALLS

Report in QSTATIM if you witness a patient, visitor, or employee fall.

I.V. TUBES

Report in QSTATIM if IV infiltrates, PICC not flushing properly.

Protecting Your Mental Health this Holiday Season

The holidays can be a joy-filled season, but they can also be stressful and especially challenging for those impacted by mental illness

Here are some suggestions for how you can reduce stress and maintain good mental health during the holiday season:

Accept your needs. Be kind to yourself! Put your own mental and physical well-being first. Recognize what your triggers are to help you prepare for stressful situations Is shopping for holiday gifts too stressful for you? What is making you feel physically and mentally agitated? Once you know this, you can take steps to avoid or cope with stress

Write a gratitude list and offer thanks. As we near the end of the year, it’s a good time to reflect back on what you are grateful for, then thank those who have supported you

Manage your time and don’t try to do too much. Prioritizing your time and activities can help you use your time well Making a dayto-day schedule helps ensure you don’t feel overwhelmed by everyday tasks and deadlines It’s okay to say no to plans that don’t fit into your schedule or make you feel good

Be realistic. All the happy lives of the people shown in those holiday commercials are fictional We all have struggles one time or another and it’s not realistic to expect otherwise Sometimes, it’s simply not possible to find the perfect gift or have a peaceful time with family

Set boundaries. Family dynamics can be complex. Acknowledge them and accept that you can only control your role. If you need to, find ways to limit your exposure.

Avoid alcohol and drugs. They don’t actually reduce stress: in fact, they often worsen it Alcohol is a depressant Don’t drink when feeling stressed or down

Volunteer. The act of volunteering can provide a great source of comfort. By helping people who are not as fortunate, you can also feel less lonely or isolated and more connected to your community. Practice Relaxation. Exercise Daily Eat Well Get Enough Sleep

Our schedules can change during the busy holiday season but make sure you are taking care of your basic needs

Keep up or seek therapy. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it may be time to share with your mental health professional. They can help you pinpoint specific events that trigger you and help you create an action plan to change them. If you’re already seeing a therapist, keep it up

A NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) study showed of people with mental illness report holidays make their conditions worse. For many people the holiday season is not always the most wonderful time of the year.

There are numerous opportunities to experience the joy of giving to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The HCMH Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax deductible corporation, formed in 1990 by a group of caring citizens.

Gifts donated through the Foundation are used to help replace aging equipment and facilities with state of the art medical technology, and to subsidize important health care programs and services for HCMH and Humboldt County.

Due to the high demand of our bus we are currently raising funds for a second form of transportation for our patients and residents.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.

What is REACH and how does it work?

The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need

To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid

Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information

Criteria for application and approval

Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant

Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000

Criteria considered in evaluating includes:

Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively

Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills

Loss of family income

An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.

Frequency of application.

How are funds distributed?

The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant

For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.

How can I contribute?

Contributions can be made in a number of ways:

A one-time check or cash

$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction

One-time payroll deduction gift

Questions - reach out to

This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.

I wish to participate by contributing:

$ through payroll deduction (ONE-TIME)

$ per pay period for one year (suggested $2/pay period)

$ one-time check or cash Make checks payable to: HCMH Foundation

FOR EXTRAORDINARY NURSES

Congratulations to our DAISY Award Winner!

Jennifer DeWinter, RN nomination letter

“I’d like to nominate Jen DeWinter for the DAISY award She serves as the Diabetic Educator and is an asset to our community She is very caring and compassionate about her job, as well as very knowledgeable

Late last Friday afternoon, we reached out to her for help with my brother’s recent diabetic diagnosis. She didn’t hesitate a minute to set up an appointment as soon as he was back in town, even though it meant she had to work late on a Friday. When he arrived, she had everything ready. She demonstrated how to insert the new continuous glucose monitor onto his arm and linked it to his phone. She did not hurry through the visit and allowed plenty of time for questions

Then, she provided additional information on regulating his blood sugar levels better. She helped him understand the importance of predicting carbs consumed in a meal as well as the timing of insulin administration

Even though it was late, she never made us feel rushed She answered all our questions and provided a direct phone number if he needed assistance during the weekend She made the complicated new diagnosis not seem so scary She reassured him that managing diabetes would improve his overall health She truly is a dedicated nurse who cares deeply for her patients”

ALWAYS

Thank you for your commitment to providing exceptional care

Tracy Angell

It’s going to be hard to say all that Tracy did to care for my in-laws in the 3 years they lived in Assisted Living. It isn’t just a job for Tracy, it is a gift she has. She was always willing to go the “extra-mile” to do whatever she could do to make their lives good. Whether it was making sure Dad got to S&L or making sure Mom got to do crafts. She was working to make their lives enjoyable if she could.

The love and care she gave them made life good there for them. It was their new home; they loved it and it was a joy for me to know that Tracy was taking care of them.

When my parents transitioned to Long Term Care, she would even come visit them. I would just like to say thank you from a very thankful Daughter!

Congratulations Tracy, on becoming a Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Healthcare Hero!

THANK YOU FOR GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND
