SHOPPING AT THE GROCERY STORE
By Amanda Thul, RD, LD
We’ve all heard someone give the advice to “only shop the parameter of the grocery store” to make healthful options. Everyone seems to take this advice or agree to it without hesitation…but have you ever really stopped to think what that means? What food are we buying or not buying with skipping the center aisles of the grocery store?
Here are common food items/groups that are on the parameter of the grocery stores I’m familiar with: Baked goods (cookies, doughnuts, sweet rolls etc), dairy products, frozen processed meats and meals, ice cream, juice, fresh meat, some fresh produce, pop, candy, alcohol. Foods that are usually in the center aisles: more produce, whole & refined grains, frozen fruit and vegetables, canned fruit and vegetables, dried and canned beans and peas, canned seafood and meat, salsas & sauces, nut butters, nuts and seeds, frozen seafood, snacks.
If we stuck to mainly the outside aisles, our diet would be pretty limited! We wouldn’t be getting all of the nutrients we need for a healthful diet and eating will get boring pretty quick without being able to add sauces and spices for flavor or peanut butter to our celery! Our grocery bill may go up as well with not being able to take advantage of nutritious-budget friendly foods such as canned beans, canned seafood, and whole grains. As you can also see, both the outside and inside aisles have less-healthful food and can vary from grocery store to grocery store A set-up of a grocery store isn’t necessarily designed with our health and dietary needs in mind.
Instead of basing your food choices solely on their position in the grocery store, I encourage you to go back to the basics Fill your cart with a variety of fruits, veggies, grains, proteins, dairy, and healthful fats. Fresh, canned, frozen, parameter or center of the store-they all fit!
I’d love to help you weed through the nutrition pseudoscience and get to the answer Reach me at the hospital at 515-332-7608.

How to Identify Your Mental Health Needs
Before seeking mental health services, it helps to clarify what you're experiencing and what kind of support you need Here’s a step-by-step guide to identifying your needs:
1. Recognize Symptoms and Patterns
Start by observing your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors over time. Ask yourself:
Mood: Do I feel persistently sad, anxious, irritable, or emotionally numb?
Thoughts: Do I have intrusive, negative, or racing thoughts? Am I experiencing excessive worry or hopelessness?
Behavioral Changes: Have I withdrawn from social activities, struggled with motivation, or noticed a change in sleep or appetite?
Coping Mechanisms: Am I using unhealthy ways to cope (e.g., alcohol, substance use, self-harm)?
Functionality: Are my daily tasks (work, school, relationships) becoming harder to manage?
Example: If you’ve been feeling exhausted, unmotivated, and disconnected for weeks, you may be experiencing depression rather than just a bad day
2. Determine the Severity of Your Struggles
Some mental health concerns require different levels of care:
Mild: Occasional stress, low mood, or worry that doesn’t interfere much with daily life. Moderate: More persistent symptoms affecting relationships, work, or well-being
Severe: Thoughts of self-harm, suicidal ideation, panic attacks, psychosis, or major impairment in daily functioning
If you are experiencing severe symptoms or thoughts of harm, seek immediate help (crisis hotlines, emergency services, or psychiatric care).
3. Identify Triggers or Life Circumstances
Consider what might be contributing to your mental health struggles: Life Transitions: Divorce, job loss, moving, parenthood, grief
Relationships: Conflict, breakups, family stress, loneliness
Past Trauma: Abuse, neglect, violence, PTSD symptoms. Chronic Stress: Work pressure, financial struggles, caregiving. Example: If you’re feeling anxious after a major career change, stress management techniques or short-term therapy might be helpful.
4. Decide What Kind of Support You Need
Different needs call for different types of mental health professionals and treatments:
Talk Therapy (Psychotherapy): For stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues
Medication Management: If symptoms are severe, a psychiatrist or primary care doctor may help with medication.
Support Groups: If you need community and shared experiences (grief groups, addiction recovery, etc.).
Self-Help Strategies: If you want tools to manage stress independently (mindfulness, journaling, exercise).
5. Set Goals for Your Mental Health
What do you hope to achieve by seeking help? Some examples:
“I want to feel less anxious and learn coping skills.”
“I need support processing a traumatic experience.”
“I want to build self-confidence and manage negative thoughts.”
“I need medication options to stabilize my mood.”
Identifying your mental health needs is the first step toward getting the right support and improving your well-being By recognizing your symptoms, assessing their severity, understanding potential triggers, and setting clear goals, you can make informed decisions about the type of help that best suits you.
Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all, and your needs may evolve over time. Be patient with yourself, stay open to different approaches, and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength. With the right support, you can take meaningful steps toward healing and personal growth.

A CULTURE OF SAFETY
Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.
A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.

NEARMISSEXAMPLES
CAUTION: WET FLOOR!
An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway.

RESPONSE TO A GOOD CATCH
CATCH GO D PROGRAM
MEDICINE INFO

PHISHING ALERTS: WHAT TO KNOW

Phishing emails are among the most common methods used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Here are some essential tips on how to spot phishing emails:
1Check the sender's email address carefully for any discrepancies or irregularities If you have spotted the Red banner on the top of the email make sure this is a sender you are aware of
2 Look out for urgent or threatening language that pressures you to take immediate action Does it give you fear or try to force you into open the attachments or files?
3 Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, especially from unknown or unexpected sources
4. Verify the legitimacy of requests for personal or confidential information by contacting the sender directly through a trusted channel.
5 Pay attention to spelling and grammar mistakes, as these can often indicate a phishing attempt
By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and our organization from falling victim to phishing scams.
Reporting suspicious emails is a critical step in our efforts to combat phishing attacks effectively. If you receive an email that seems suspicious or requests sensitive information, please report it immediately to our IT team via the Phish alert button in your email. This looks like this.

By promptly reporting phishing attempts, you help us identify and neutralize potential threats before they can cause harm to our organization
Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and your vigilance plays a vital role in safeguarding our Hospital Network/data

There are numerous opportunities to experience the joy of giving to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The HCMH Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax deductible corporation, formed in 1990 by a group of caring citizens.
Gifts donated through the Foundation are used to help replace aging equipment and facilities with state of the art medical technology, and to subsidize important health care programs and services for HCMH and Humboldt County.
Due to the high demand of our bus we are currently raising funds for a second form of transportation for our patients and residents.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.
What is REACH and how does it work?
The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need
To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid
Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information
Criteria for application and approval
Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant
Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000
Criteria considered in evaluating includes:
Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively
Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills
Loss of family income
An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.
Frequency of application.
How are funds distributed?
The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant
For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.
How can I contribute?
Contributions can be made in a number of ways:
A one-time check or cash
$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction
One-time payroll deduction gift
Questions - reach out to

This program is funded by employee donations and its intended use is for employees who find themselves in an emergency situation that could not have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate monetary planning.

“I came into the ER with a heart attack after moving snow and wanted to tell you guys that you have a very professional ER department Got me in and out of the ER and to FD right away to get my stents put in. I wanted to thank you for all your professionalism.”
"Happiness is getting to get your infusion in your hometown hospital after 13 years of having to go to Fort Dodge, a super nice nurse, my own room, and a 1 poke IV instead of 5. Life is good."
All nurses, anesthesia, and Dr Croo were amazing. Previous experience years ago was exactly the same. That’s why we came back. Great care!
The doctor took the time to understand my concerns and exactly what I meant of where the pain was. Morgan made me feel very, very comfortable.
Very friendly and helpful staff, from check-in, nurses who did the prep, nurses who wheeled me to outpatient surgery and assisted during procedure, Dr Adams and discharge nurse Very professional staff I would certainly receive care here for further medical needs Absolutely LOVE seeing Nicole and Laurie They help me stay on track and are very understanding!
Everyone was very nice and helpful plus there is a young man in the lab who drew my blood quite a few times in the hospital. I never hardly felt the prick of the needle which I so appreciate his skill!! He was so polite and understanding esp for his age and should be commended!! All the others were very good too and I had no problems with. He just really impressed me!
Therapist Nicole Boyle is the one that worked with me. She is concerned about her patients and willing to listen and help in any way she can.
I have never had such a positive visit for lab work ever. I was a phlebotomist in DSM for years and having someone that was that skilled at her (Kyra Fritz) work makes me happy. Jamie and Emily are the BEST! Always willing to work together to be able to provide the best care for Elsie! Thank you!
I found Jonathan Naff very helpful in all aspects of my therapy and I enjoyed his optimism and good humor. He is truly a great asset to Humboldt Hospital; I pray that we can keep him.
All the staff are extremely friendly and very helpful! My son loves coming to therapy there and playing with Miss Addie and Miss Karla!
Really enjoyed the use of your new CT machine a lot faster and easier Angie and the team did a wonderful job
Amanda had a pleasant manner about her. Payton was very; professional & caring! I give her a 10 as the best of the crew award that evening!
Your surgery center is the best all around, such friendly staff, and Jacob Miller is the best!. .. Thank all of you very much.
I arrived early and was taken in promptly. Tammy K. was very professional and kind. It took very little time and I was happy with my care.
Connie was very courteous and patient. She did a great job!!

Got right in, got tested and knew what I had right away Diana at the front desk was very prompt & got me checked in quickly, Cindy the nurse was very gentle with doing the quad nose swab and Kenzie is so kind & helpful! Great job everyone!
The therapy dept is excellent.
The ER staff treated me amazing and explained everything well when I asked questions. Your receptionist was so very helpful and pleasant. I wasn't sure of my Medicare coverage, but she looked it up for me and also gave me my ID number. So thankful for her. The nurse doing my ultrasound was so polite and professional. She walk me to front desk to show me way out. I've never been to your hospital before, and would not hesitate to go back for anything. Thank you so much for a very pleasant experience.
Amie did a GREAT job with my x-ray She was very very gentle with my smashed finger!!!
Rachel in Registration was quick and very understanding of my pain!! GREAT JOB TO ALL!
Jon is an asset to your facility
Your bus driver Tony is also top notch.
Kenzie C. is amazing! We are so lucky to have her in our community!
Emily is so caring and compassionate!!! And the front desk is so kind and professional at the same time! Already recommended to others.
We did not have a front desk staff since our appointment was done on the computer with our provider. Laurie Dobrinich is a good mental health counselor for sure!
The staff at HMH made me feel valued, safe, informed and very comfortable.
Every staff person I encountered - from the check-in desk to my care giver Laura and the nursing staff /surgical team seemed happy to be working at HCMH
Katie L is the greatest and I enjoy working with her
Courtney explained everything so well. I absolutely loved the fact that the room was big and had a window. Knowing I had to do a pulmonary function test was making me nervous but she explained things so well and being inside the chamber wasn't so bad. It was a pleasant experience and I appreciate her so much. Thank you!
Top notch. Employee conducting PFT (Katie P.) was best I have worked with, do what you need to keep her. Knowledgeable, personable and patient conscientious. And I hate PFTs. Do them at work yearly. Seriously top notch.
After my CT scan I felt a little weird and off. The lady that did my CT (Angie G.) was very kind and understanding. She was calm and comforting. I very much appreciated her help and concern for me and my health after such a procedure She was wonderful and helped me feel better She deserves recognition for her kind and caring nature
Your receptionist (Diana T) was so very helpful and pleasant I wasn't sure of my Medicare coverage, but she looked it up for me and also gave me my ID number So thankful for her The nurse doing my ultrasound was so polite and professional. She walk me to front desk to show me way out. I've never been to your hospital before, and would not hesitate to go back for anything. Thank you so much for a very pleasant experience.
