By Amanda Thul, RD, LD Ever eat some toast or a bowl of cereal for breakfast and you end up hungry 30 minutes later? Most traditional breakfast foods are mostly carbohydrate foods. While there is nothing wrong with these foods, we digest them quickly. Leaving us hungry and leading to an energy crash mid-morning along with a harder time focusing.

Adding in protein WITH the carb foods (notice I didn’t say in replace of) slows the digestion of the carbohydrates leaving you fuller for longer and giving you longer lasting energy. 20-30g of protein is a good goal to aim for to feel the effect.

Here are some simple add-ins to have with your favorite “carby” breakfast foods: Cottage cheese Legumes Eggs Cheese Greek yogurt Ham Turkey sausage Nut butter Nuts & seeds Milk Fiber and fats also help slow the digestion of our meal. Eating a balanced breakfast with multiple food groups helps give us the energy we need along with the fats, fiber, and protein to make the energy longer lasting plus a bump up in the nutrition content.

One of my favorite protein-filled breakfasts for a cold winter morning is this protein oatmeal. 1 serving provides 20 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber! It’s made with common household ingredients and no protein powder! It’s a great base recipe to customize to your liking with your favorite toppings. Some of my favorites are berries, honey, flax seeds, chai seeds, nuts, and a little more milk.

PROTEIN OATMEAL 1 large egg ½ cup to ¾ cup milk (depending on desired consistency) ½ cup quick cooking oats, dry Toppings Mix egg and milk together. Add in oats and mix well.

Microwave 2-3 minutes, or until cooked through. Stir and add toppings!

Nutrition information per serving: 358 calories, 14g total fat, 4g sat fat, 167 mg sodium, 20g protein, 37g carbs, 5g fiber. (Makes 1 serving)

Rules and How to Win Welcome to Mission Slim Possible 2024. This year’s challenge will start Jan. 7th and end March 2nd. You have 8 weeks to complete the below Summer Olympic Themed wellness challenges.

Step 1: Form your team of 5-8 members.

Step 2: Identify your team captain. The captain is responsible for gathering and turning in team information via email every 2 weeks. I will email the team captain a Survey Monkey to fill out every 2 weeks.

Jan. 7th-20th Dive into increasing your water intake. To complete this challenge drink 64 ounces of water daily for 10 of the next 14 days.

Jan. 21st-Feb. 3rd Earn a Gold Medal in Track/Cycling/Swimming. Be active for 20 minutes daily for 10 of the next 14 days. Take a walk, dance, yoga, lift weights, any activity you enjoy for 20 minutes.

Feb. 4th-Feb. 17th Medal in wrestling or basketball by taking down/scoring a combination of 5 servings of fruits or veggies daily for 10 of the next 14 days. One medium sized fruit is one serving. Half cup of cooked vegetables or 1 cup of leafy greens or raw vegetables is one serving.

Feb. 18th-March 2nd Be flexible and join the gymnastics team to bring more balance to your life. Reduce screen time, outside of work, to less than 2 hours daily. Spend 2 hours or less on your phone/tablet 10 of the next 14 days.

Jan. 7th-March 2nd Gold medal and get on the podium by maintaining or losing weight during these 8 weeks. Healthy weight isn't about following a diet or program.

Instead, it involves a lifestyle with healthy eating patterns, regular physical activity, and stress management. People with gradual, steady weight loss (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more likely to keep weight off than people who lose weight quickly. If you maintain or lose 1-10 lbs. during this 8-week challenge, you will earn bonus points for your team.

Winter can be a treacherous season, and it’s important to take precautions to avoid slips and falls. Here are some tips to help you stay safe: Appropriate footwear in inclement weather is a must. Rubber waterproof soles will give more traction and keep you warm and dry.

A cleared path for driving and walking may not be available –Plan ahead and give yourself extra time.

Use special care when entering and exiting buildings or vehicles; use handrails or the vehicle for support.

Walk in designated walkways and avoid shortcuts. Avoid uneven surfaces if possible. Avoid steps or curbs with ice on them.

Look ahead and pay attention to the path when you walk. Don’t text or read while walking.

Watch for slippery floors when you enter or exit any buildings. Use door mats to help remove snow and water from footwear.

50% of people injured in slip and fall injuries are walking on level ground when they slip!* It may sound silly –but if you can’t avoid walking on a slippery surface… walk like a penguin.

Winterize your home: Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows.

Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls.

Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks.

Check your heating systems.

Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside.

Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys.

Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available.

If you do not have working smoke detectors, install one inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning emergencies.

Install a battery-operated or battery backup CO detector to alert you of the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check or change the battery when you change your clocks in the fall and spring.

SPRINGVALE INDEPENDENT LIVING We had a White Elephant Gift Exchange with the tenants the week before Christmas and it was a big hit. We had 30 tenants participate this year; they had a lot of fun! The tenants were busy in December making crafts, going to look at lights, and we had a few people come in and sing Christmas songs for them. They were very blessed by people in the community that took the time to remember those that live here with cards, church groups coming to sing carols in the evenings, school groups coming to play BINGO, and we have seen lots and lots of family and friends come through our doors.

The staff of HCMH has been amazing as well, we had a department make cards for each tenant and a group come down to sing Christmas Carols at lunchtime. All of these things brighten their days more than you know! The staff and tenants of Independent Living wish you a happy and blessed 2024!

The Candy Cane Lane Carolers A special thank you to these wonderful people who spread some Christmas cheer around the hospital in December. This was a way to go “above and beyond” for our guests and we appreciate you taking the time to do this.

HC Public Health update Protecting Your Mental Health this Holiday Season The holidays can be a joy-filled season, but they can also be stressful and especially challenging for those impacted by mental illness.

Here are some suggestions for how you can reduce stress and maintain good mental health during the holiday season: Accept your needs. Be kind to yourself! Put your own mental and physical well-being first. Recognize what your triggers are to help you prepare for stressful situations. Is shopping for holiday gifts too stressful for you? What is making you feel physically and mentally agitated? Once you know this, you can take steps to avoid or cope with stress Write a gratitude list and offer thanks. As we near the end of the year, it’s a good time to reflect back on what you are grateful for, then thank those who have supported you.

Manage your time and don’t try to do too much. Prioritizing your time and activities can help you use your time well. Making a dayto-day schedule helps ensure you don’t feel overwhelmed by everyday tasks and deadlines. It’s okay to say no to plans that don’t fit into your schedule or make you feel good Be realistic. All the happy lives of the people shown in those holiday commercials are fictional. We all have struggles one time or another and it’s not realistic to expect otherwise. Sometimes, it’s simply not possible to find the perfect gift or have a peaceful time with family.

Set boundaries. Family dynamics can be complex. Acknowledge them and accept that you can only control your role. If you need to, find ways to limit your exposure.

Avoid alcohol and drugs. They don’t actually reduce stress: in fact, they often worsen it. Alcohol is a depressant. Don’t drink when feeling stressed or down.

Volunteer. The act of volunteering can provide a great source of comfort. By helping people who are not as fortunate, you can also feel less lonely or isolated and more connected to your community.

Practice Relaxation. Exercise Daily. Eat Well. Get Enough Sleep.

Our schedules can change during the busy holiday season but make sure you are taking care of your basic needs.

Keep up or seek therapy. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it may be time to share with your mental health professional. They can help you pinpoint specific events that trigger you and help you create an action plan to change them. If you’re already seeing a therapist, keep it up.
