Flavor Combos

Here are some ideas to get your favorite flavor combo with the nutrition your body needs.

Fruits and veggies will add high-fiber carbohydrates. P= protein source. F= fat source.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR

SMOOTHIES

Smoothies are a trend in nutrition that will never completely go away and that’s okay! They are great for a meal on the go A delicious way to add nutrition to your day if you’re not a fruit and veggie eater Smoothies can be made in just about any flavor that you can think of and give a variety of nutrition benefits depending on the combinations of fruit, bases, and add-ins you use Smoothies are essentially a meal in a cup We still want to be mindful of what we’re blending to get a similar nutrition composition to what a meal provides A smoothie should contain high-fiber carbohydrates, protein, and healthful fats to be a well-rounded liquid meal

Do you need to add powdered greens or other vitamin/mineral supplements? Not necessarily Food is always going to be our bodies preferred method to get nutrition instead of supplements & powders Food is complex and contains benefits that can’t always be duplicated or replaced by a powder Our bodies can only take so many vitamins and minerals at one time Some vitamins and minerals can’t be stored beyond what we need in a day So if you’re adding a powder to your smoothie that contains more than 100% daily value of a vitamin/mineral your kidneys will filter it out to be excreted in your urine If you like the idea of adding the most nutrition you can to your smoothie, throw in 1-2 handfuls of spinach or other leafy green You most likely won’t even taste it with the other ingredients

Want to make smoothies even more convenient? Make freezer smoothie packs Combine all solid ingredients and add-ins for 1 smoothie in a zip-lock freezer bag, label it, & throw it in your freezer When you’re ready to make a smoothie, dump the entire contents of the bag with your liquid of choice and blend!

Fruits: Bananas, apples, berries, oranges, pineapple, peaches, melon, kiwi, mango

Nutrition boosters: Spinach, kale, avocados (F), carrots, celery, Cucumbers, cauliflower, cooked sweet potatoes

Add-ins: Peanut butter (P/F), almond butter (P/F), flaxseed (P/F), chia seeds (P/F), oats, yogurt (P), cottage cheese (P), vanilla extract, honey, cocoa powder, protein powder (P).

Liquid: Milk (P), 100% fruit juice, water, almond milk, soy milk, coconut water

The Administration of this hospital and its governing body believe in a strong commitment to the maintenance of a safe and sanitary hospital environment for our patients, employees and visitors. This commitment has been evidenced by the development and support of the hospital Safety committee composed of members representing a cross-section of the departments and services within the facility. This committee continues to lead us in the development of policies and programs which affect all areas of our facility and provide guidance in the safe performance of our duties.

Each employee is required to comply with safety and health standards and with the policies and procedures that apply to their job responsibilities in an effort to maintain a safe environment. The Safety committee is authorized, through the chairperson or the safety officer, to take action when a hazardous condition exists that could result in personal injury to individuals or damage to equipment or buildings.

As a member of our community, this Hospital shares a responsibility to assist local agencies in the event of a disaster To meet this responsibility, new employees are oriented to the hospital emergency preparedness plans and to the drills which are performed to maintain our state of preparedness in the event of a disaster.

Welcome to the First Monthly Update from The Safety Committee Since it is Tornado and Severe Weather Season, it is a great time to review what our policy currently is

PURPOSE:

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital is devoted to the safety of all our Patients, Visitors, and our Employees The following procedure is to prepare for the event of severe weather to include SEVERE THUNDERSTORM, TORNADO, SNOW AND/OR ICE, and FLOOD. GENERAL: Each Department in Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) is responsible for the patients in their area.

"YOU CARE FOR THEM, WE CARE FOR YOU!"

DEFINITIONS:

Severe Thunderstorm Warning:

An alert issued when trained storm spotters or a Doppler weather radar indicate that a thunderstorm is producing or will soon produce dangerously large hail (one-inch diameter or larger) or high straight-line winds (58 miles per hour or higher), capable of causing significant damage.

For Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

When notice of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (severe thunderstorm moving toward our area) is received, the switchboard will announce “CODE ALERT, SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING” over the intercom; repeat three times.

All departments will protect human safety by closing window coverings over windows, remove patients from and advise everyone to stay away from outside windows and doors. Provide all patients with a blanket or bedspread to protect them in the event of flying debris.

Tornado Watch:

An alert issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado

For Tornado Watch

When notice of a Tornado Watch (conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado) is received, the switchboard will announce “ATTENTION ALL EMPLOYEES, TORNADO WATCH” over the intercom; repeat three times.

General Safety Guidelines for Patient Care Areas:

All personnel shall review their severe thunderstorm/tornado disaster plans and evacuation plan for their specific department.

Close shades or drapes over all windows.

Remove all items not essential for patient care and place in drawers or a storage room away from patients.

Advise and reassure patients that the above precautions are taken whenever there is a severe weather warning.

Lower beds to lowest position. Ensure patients have their nurse call button. Provide all patients with a blanket or bedspread, which may be used to protect them if necessary. If patient able to wear shoes or hard soled slippers, put on at this time.

Move all charts, unit dose medication carts, emergency carts, etc. to an inside room. Prepare equipment that may be needed to move patients in the event of a Tornado Warning including:

Blankets

Wheelchairs

Linens

Patient care equipment

Safety Guidelines in Non-Patient Care Areas:

Close all blinds, shades, and drapes.

Remove loose objects from desk and countertops and windowsills. Secure all wheeled carts in your work area. Stay away from outside windows and doors.

Tornado Warning: An alert issued when a tornado is indicated by radar or sighted by spotters and moving toward the warned area.

If a Code Tornado Warning is issued the following procedures shall be instituted:

When notice of a Tornado Warning (a tornado has been sighted in the area) is received, the switchboard will announce “ATTENTION ALL EMPLOYEES, TORNADO WARNING” over the intercom; repeat three times.

Personnel will begin to move patients to designated safe areas. Inpatient care patients shall be moved into the restrooms. Bedridden Patients will be moved away from the windows and covered with blankets.

Place blankets, linens, and mattresses on the floor of safe areas to provide a place for patients to lie down

Move patient care equipment needed to care for patients to the safe area

Maintain appropriate space in corridors for personnel to move safely among patients

Close all doors

Personnel shall assist patients in lying flat or crouching down with head covered with blankets All personnel shall also assume the prone or crouching positions and keep their heads covered

Procedures for each Department are listed in the Red Emergency Preparedness Manuals in each Department – Please be sure to know what you need to do in case of severe weather Our patients and residents depend on you for their safety

June is Safety Month and to kick it off we will be adding a Suggestion Box for Safety to the Employee Page on our website – more to come on this.

Weather Awareness

Are you ready for severe weather? This is an ideal time to review your household’s emergency plan, make an emergency kit, and sign up to receive alerts to stay weather aware.

As a reminder, outdoor warning sirens are only intended to reach people who are outdoors; the sirens are not meant to serve as a warning system for people inside homes or other buildings, especially as advances in building and window construction continually improve and limit the level of sound entering homes and businesses. The best preparedness plans include multiple weather warning notification systems, including weather radios, text, and email alerts, and contacting family members or neighbors

1. Make a plan.

Knowing what to do in the event of an emergency is key. Make sure everyone in your family knows the drill.Include your pets in your emergency plan.

2.Build a kit.

Your emergency supply kit should have everything you need to sustain you and your family for 3-5 days. Use a checklist to create your own kit.

3. Be aware.

Learn about the hazards that can affect your community and learn how to get information about current weather and road conditions Sign up for Alert Iowa emergency notifications

Preparedness & Weather Safety

Every year in the United States, hundreds of people are killed and thousands injured because of the weather. Dangerous weather can take many forms, ranging from violent tornadoes to crippling winter storms. With the notable exception of hurricanes, Iowa can experience any of these dangerous phenomena.ile there is nothing we can do to stop dangerous weather from affecting us, there are things we can do to stay safe when the weather turns nasty

Weather safety and survival - no matter what the hazard - depends on the following key items:

1 KNOW THE HAZARDS -Be aware of the hazards that you might face during a weather event

2 KNOW WHEN TO EXPECT DANGEROUS WEATHER -Monitor forecasts and information from your local National Weather Service Forecast Office.

3. PAY ATTENTION -Be aware of all watches, warnings, and advisories affecting you.

4. HAVE A PLAN TO STAY SAFE -Think about it before it happens and be ready to act to survive.
