Safety Spotlight:

The Importance of Basic First Aid

Accidents can happen anywhere at home, on the road, or even at work. That’s why knowing a few basic first aid skills can make a big difference in how we respond when something unexpected occurs. Quick, calm action can prevent minor injuries from becoming serious and, in some cases, even save a life.

Why Basic First Aid Matters

First aid isn’t just for emergencies it’s about being prepared Knowing what to do in those first few moments after an injury can:

Reduce the severity of injuries by acting quickly and appropriately.

Provide comfort and reassurance to someone who’s hurt.

Prevent complications while waiting for professional help to arrive

Simple First Aid Steps Everyone Should Know

Here are a few quick reminders of what to do if common situations arise:

Cuts and scrapes: Wash your hands, clean the wound with soap and water, then cover it with a sterile bandage.

Burns: Cool the burn with running water for at least 10 minutes, then loosely cover with a clean, non-stick dressing

Sprains or strains: Follow the R.I.C.E. method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.)

Choking: If someone is choking and unable to breathe, speak, or cough, perform abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich maneuver) and call for help immediately.

CPR awareness: If a person is unresponsive and not breathing, start CPR and use an AED if one is available, even basic knowledge of these steps can be lifesaving.

Be Prepared

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with where different first aid supplies are in your workspace and make sure; they’re stocked with essentials.

Did You Know?

The Public Health Department offers opportunities for community groups to learn hands-only CPR or basic CPR/AED techniques. These training courses are a great way to build confidence in community first responders and ensure we are ready to act if an emergency arises.

SAFETY STARTS WITH ALL OF US

Staying informed and prepared helps keep our workplace a safe and caring environment for everyone. The more we know, the better equipped we are to help, both at work and beyond

Stay safe and stay prepared!

Trusted Advice in a Social Media World

If you’ve ever scrolled through TikTok or Instagram and thought, “Wait is that really true about mental health?” you’re not alone

Social media has become a major source of mental health content Hashtags like #anxiety, #ADHD, and #selfcare have billions of views That visibility helps reduce stigma and encourages open conversations but it also has a downside

Not everything shared online is accurate

Research shows much of the mental health information on TikTok is misleading or even harmful. Some creators mean well, but quick-fix tips and oversimplified advice can lead to confusion, self-diagnosis, or delayed care.

Why We Joined the Conversation

At Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Mental Health & Wellness, we know how hard it can be to sort fact from fiction. That’s why our team decided to bring trusted mental health advice directly to social media where people are already looking for answers.

We’re excited to introduce our new TikTok page, where our providers share short, reliable, and easy-to-understand videos about mental health topics that matter most to you From managing anxiety and improving sleep to understanding therapy and medications, we’re here to make mental health information clear, compassionate, and credible

From Our Team to You

“Social media can be a great way to start the conversation,” says Dr. Ryan Lee, DO, Medical Director for Mental Health & Wellness. “But it’s not a substitute for professional care. Our TikTok page helps bridge that gap — offering trustworthy information that encourages people to reach out when they need support.”

Our clinical team Allie Wirtz, LMHC; Emily Anderson, LMHC; Megan Douglas, tLMHC; Candace Trenary, LMHC; Anthony Wubben, LISW; Laurie Dobrinich, LISW, and Nicole Lee, PMHNP will take turns sharing practical tips, myth-busting insights, and reminders that mental health care doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating.

Expect to see Dr Lee explaining how medications work, a therapist describing what therapy really looks like, and our nurse practitioner offering quick strategies to reset after a stressful day We’ll also spotlight community resources, coping tools, and ways to care for yourself one small step at a time

Our Promise

- Accurate information you can trust

- Real voices from local professionals

- Content that encourages connection, not comparison

I have been provided a copy of and have read or have had explained to me the information about influenza and influenza vaccine. I have had a chance to ask questions that were answered to my satisfaction. Person to be vaccinated (If a minor, parent or guardian)

2025-2026 INFLUENZA DECLINATION FORM

My employer or the affiliated health facility, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, recommends that I receive the influenza vaccination to protect myself, patients, staff, and others in the healthcare facility.

I acknowledge that I am aware of the following facts: Influenza vaccination is recommended for all healthcare personnel to protect staff and patients from influenza, its complications, and death. Due to my occupational exposure, I may be at risk of acquiring influenza infection. I may also spread influenza to my patients, coworkers, and family. This can cause serious illness, especially in people at high risk.

If I contract influenza, I can shed the virus up to 24 hours before symptoms appear, increasing the risk of transmission to others

Even if I have mild or no symptoms, I can still spread influenza, which may cause severe illness or death in others.

I have received education on the effectiveness and risks of influenza vaccination, and I have reviewed the Vaccine Information Statements (VIS).

I have been given the opportunity to be vaccinated with the influenza vaccine at no charge. However, I decline vaccination at this time. I understand that by declining, I remain at risk of acquiring influenza and transmitting it to patients. If I choose to be vaccinated in the future, I may receive the vaccine at no charge.

I understand that by being exempted from the Influenza Vaccination Program, I will be required to wear a surgical mask during all direct patient care activities throughout the influenza season (Nov. 15th until the end of the flu season, as reported by the Iowa Department of Public Health), per HCMH policy. (See Influenza Vaccine Policy for full mask requirements.)

I have read and fully understand the information in this declination form.

VACCINE INFORMATION STATEMENT

Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (Inactivated or Recombinant): What you need to know

1. Why get vaccinated?

Influenza vaccine can prevent influenza (flu).

Flu is a contagious disease that spreads around the United States every year, usually between October and May. Anyone can get the flu, but it is more dangerous for some people. Infants and young children, people 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions or a weakened immune system are at greatest risk of flu complications

Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and ear infections are examples of flu-related complications. If you have a medical condition, such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes, flu can make it worse. Flu can cause fever and chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and runny or stuffy nose. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. In an average year, thousands of people in the United States die from flu, and many more are hospitalized. Flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related visits to the doctor each year.

2. Influenza vaccines

CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated every flu season Children 6 months through 8 years of age may need 2 doses during a single flu season Everyone else needs only 1 dose each flu season

It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after vaccination. There are many flu viruses, and they are always changing. Each year a new flu vaccine is made to protect against the influenza viruses believed to be likely to cause disease in the upcoming flu season.

Many vaccine information statements are available in Spanish and other languages See www immunize org/vis

Hojas de información sobre vacunas están disponibles en español y en muchos otros idiomas Visite www immunize org/vis

Even when the vaccine doesn’t exactly match these viruses, it may still provide some protection

Influenza vaccine does not cause flu.

Influenza vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines

3. Talk with your health care provider

Tell your vaccination provider if the person getting the vaccine:

Has had an allergic reaction after a previous dose of influenza vaccine, or has any severe, lifethreatening allergies Has ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (also called “GBS”)

In some cases, your health care provider may decide to postpone influenza vaccination until a future visit. Influenza vaccine can be administered at any time during pregnancy. Women who are or will be pregnant during influenza season should receive inactivated influenza vaccine.

People with minor illnesses, such as a cold, may be vaccinated People who are moderately or severely ill should usually wait until they recover before getting influenza vaccine

Your health care provider can give you more information.

4. Risks of a vaccine reaction

Soreness, redness, and swelling where the shot

6. The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program is given, fever, muscle aches, and headache can happen after influenza vaccination

There may be a very small increased risk of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after inactivated influenza vaccine (the flu shot).

Young children who get the flu shot along with pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) and/or DTaP vaccine at the same time might be slightly more likely to have a seizure caused by fever. Tell your health care provider if a child who is getting flu vaccine has ever had a seizure.

People sometimes faint after medical procedures, including vaccination. Tell your provider if you feel dizzy or have vision changes or ringing in the ears.

As with any medicine, there is a very remote chance of a vaccine causing a severe allergic reaction, other serious injury, or death.

5. What if there is a serious problem?

An allergic reaction could occur after the vaccinated person leaves the clinic If you see signs of a severe allergic reaction (hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness), call 9-1-1 and get the person to the nearest hospital

For other signs that concern you, call your health care provider.

Adverse reactions should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Your health care provider will usually file this report, or you can do it yourself. Visit the VAERS website at www.vaers.hhs.gov or call 1-800-822-7967. VAERS is only for reporting reactions, and VAERS staff members do not give medical advice.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) is a federal program that was created to compensate people who may have been injured by certain vaccines. Claims regarding alleged injury or death due to vaccination have a time limit for filing, which may be as short as two years. Visit the VICP website at www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation or call 1-800-338-2382 to learn about the program and about filing a claim.

7. How can I learn more?

Ask your health care provider. Call your local or state health department. Visit the website of the Food and Drug

Administration (FDA) for vaccine package inserts and additional information at www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines. Contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

- Call 1-800-232-4636 (1-800-CDC-INFO) or - Visit CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/flu.

NOVEMBER: DIABETES

AWARENESS

MONTH

November is American Diabetes month. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that is characterized by high blood sugar. The body doesn’t use insulin (hormone that lowers blood sugar) as well as it used to leading to elevated blood sugar. The unfortunate truth is about 1 in 10 American’s have type 2 diabetes, and with the numbers projected to grow, it is very likely that you know at least 1 person who has diabetes.

There have been a lot of changes with treating diabetes over the years. I want to highlight 2 important parts of diabetes care. The first is the language around diabetes has changed to center on the person and not the disease. Avoid using the word “diabetic” to refer to either the person who has diabetes or diabetes related care. “Diabetic” uses a disease to describe the person and undoubtedly people are more than whatever disease or illness they may have. There is still a lot of stigma around having diabetes and labeling them a “diabetic” can contribute to stress and feelings of shame. Show support and respect for the individual by changing “they’re a diabetic” to “person living with diabetes” or other non-judgmental attributes of the person.

The second highlight is on eating to help manage diabetes. There is a LOT of judgment around eating for someone who has diabetes. Often times people have the belief that if you have diabetes you cannot eat bread, oranges, potatoes, juice, or anything with sugar or carbs. This is not true! People with diabetes can truly eat the same foods as when they didn’t have diabetes. While carbohydrates do raise blood sugar, how much and what they’re eaten with (protein, fats, and fiber) can have a big impact on post meal blood sugars. Eating for safe blood sugars is very individualized and is not confined to general statements of restricting certain foods or food groups.

People who have diabetes are already hyper-aware of what they’re eating and usually already feeling a lot of stress and anxiety over their food choices. A great way to support them is not to point out what they shouldn’t be eating but instead not talking about food may provide the best support. Or if you have a close relationship with the person, ask them what works best for them for eating and show your support by making changes along with them.

Our diabetes center at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital is staffed by Jennifer DeWinter (Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist) and myself as the dietitian. We are happy to meet with you for any diabetes related care or if you want to learn more about how you can support a loved one living with diabetes Call us at 515-332-4200 for more information November 14th is World Diabetes Day and we invite you to wear blue, along with the HCMH employees, to show your support for everyone living with any type of diabetes

I’d love to help you weed through the nutrition pseudoscience and get to the answer. Reach me at the hospital at 515-332-7608.

No changes to coverage. Medical insurance will continue to offer Point-of-Service Coverage for both the PPO and High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHP). Are medical plan premiums increasing for all team members?

Yes, premiums for both the PPO and HDHP plans have increased for the 2026 plan year.

A CULTURE OF SAFETY

Enhancing a culture of safety is a priority for HCMH. This new program will highlight opportunities for improvement in the delivery of patient care and place a positive connotation to reporting and investigating “near misses”.

A “Good Catch” is the recognition of an event that could have been harmful to a patient, but was prevented.

NEARMISSEXAMPLES

CAUTION: WET FLOOR!

An employee notes that the hallway floors have just been mopped, but there is no wet floor sign They locate one and place it in the hallway

PRIVACY CONCERN

Card Club in SAL

Jamie Shiflett Retires

Wishing Jamie Shiflett a happy retirement. As one of our outstanding Med Lab Techs, Jamie provided the best possible care. She was always a great teammate, and we will miss working with her

Thank you, Jamie for your years of service!

It was wonderful to have 4 tenants get together on a Saturday night and play the card game 500. The tenants held out for 3 hours! This was an amazing time of fun and reminiscing as they told stories about Saturday Night Card Clubs “back in the day”

If you are a card player and enjoy the good clean fun of Saturday night card, come on down to Assisted Living on Saturday night at 6pm.

Clinical Skills Fair 2025

Staff from across the hospital participated in our annual Clinical Skills Fair, refreshing their knowledge and practicing hands-on skills to ensure the highest quality of patient care

Radiology Expansion Update

As we continue to grow and add more patient services, the need for additional space continues on

Our Radiology Department will soon be adding a new ultrasound machine and technician to provide full-time vascular ultrasound services.

Currently, these studies are only available on Fridays and limited to six patients per week. With this expansion, patients will be able to receive their testing right here in Humboldt with quicker access to services

To make room for this new service, our Maintenance Team has started internal construction to add another exam room within Radiology. This requires moving a few other things around. The hallway near Infusion and the ER will be reconfigured to include:

A new area for DME supplies, and

A vending machine space for patients and visitors who may need a quick snack or drink without walking all the way to the cafeteria.

Work is now underway, and we expect the project to take a couple of weeks to complete Please let your leaders know if you have any questions

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to grow and enhance the services we provide to our community.

Are you looking to help out your fellow employees in times of need and hardship? This is an easy way to help out those people in need. The REACH Program has granted over $6,000 in employee aid over the last 5 years, but we cannot do that without your help.

What is REACH and how does it work?

The REACH Program is a financial assistance program sponsored by the HCMH Foundation. The purpose of the REACH Program is to make funds available to HCMH employees in times of unusual need

To make it work, we ask employees to consider a small gift (suggested amount $2/pay period or $52/year) which is placed into a fund, strictly for employee aid

Confidential applications will be accepted from eligible employees (full or part-time employees who have been employed for at least 12 months) who find themselves in unexpected circumstances and in need of financial assistance A committee reviews the applications for appropriateness of need and grants are made based on that information

Criteria for application and approval

Donations are purely voluntary and making, or not making, a contribution does not affect one’s chances of receiving a grant

Requests to the REACH Program may be submitted as the situation or need warrants Maximum allowable award is $500 with a lifetime cap at $5,000

Criteria considered in evaluating includes:

Unexpected occurrence or specific situation that significantly impacts the personal life of the employee, as well as seriously affecting the ability of the employee to work effectively

Health problems, which result in a depletion of personal PTO and excessive medical bills

Loss of family income

An occurrence that could have been anticipated or avoided by good advance planning or appropriate money management.

Frequency of application.

How are funds distributed?

The HCMH Foundation will make payments directly to the appropriate provider of service, not to the applicant

For example, if help was needed by paying the utility bill the Foundation would write a check directly to the utility company.

How can I contribute?

Contributions can be made in a number of ways:

A one-time check or cash

$2 (suggested) per pay period payroll deduction

One-time payroll deduction gift

Dr Lewis, Payton and Amanda were outstanding!

The Month

My visit with Nicole Lee went great! Jaime at the front desk wonderful about scheduling me first thing in the morning around my work schedule Miranda and Hannah were comfortable, even though I was there for a mental hea pp y questions and concerns and I'm very optimistic about my medication plan

Brittany was kind and efficient at the front desk. Jen was a great first contact in Radiology. Tammy did an excellent job explaining and performing the CT Scan. All around great experience.

The receptionist her name was Jennifer was so easy to speak to welcomed me and Tammy was my CT person explained everything and took all my anxiety away you have a great staff in your X-ray department and at the greeting at the door when I got to the hospital keep it up HCMH

Mrs Guy in radiation was super! She has a wonderful warm smile, great eye contact and explained to me exactly what she was going to do, what I should expect and what I needed to do. She was patient and repeated direction when I was not sure. She escorted me out when we were finished as I was not sure how to get back to the front entrance. It is easy to see she is confident in her work and has many years experience...but what impressed me SO MUCH is she did not have the BURNOUT ATTITUDE like same old crap another day attitude. She treated me like I was a valued and appreciated patient like it was her first year on the job Thank you Mrs Guy and HCMH

I would like to say that the staff in the ER room, Joey, Tawny, and Liz did a spectacular job and so did the lab tech Sydney I couldn't ask for a better team They got me in and tested done in a short amount of time was very pleased with that didn't have to sit around and wait

Every one of the ER staff that helped us was exceptionally kind, competent, and compassionate. We are very thankful for the great care Joey, Amanda, and Dr. Lewis provided our daughter.

Trish has such a BIG Heart, her kindness made me feel I was in Good hands. McKenzie was very kind, Sam Also Liz came and got me for x-rays and was very kind to meKelly in lab was warm and kindDr Dr Lewis, WOW! He has such a gift to talk to you, look you directly in the eye as well as listen to me including making me feel I am importantI actually felt that Dr Lewis was concerned about me as well as the team I wasn't in the room more than 3 min and Dr Lewis was there with me and my wife, explained the steps he was going to do for me I am so grateful to all who cared for me and I am so appreciative of HCMH.

Dr Lewis was great. My son loved the noisy balloon!! Both nurses were great as well, very caring. Thank you for the excellent care.

Cathy Stalzer and infusion team explained what and how long it would last they calmed my anxiety and made sure I was comfortable thank you for having infusion so I didn't have to travel to Fort Dodge

Diane at registration is amazing She always remembers me, she is helpful, and always has a smile She's the 1st person you come in contact with and sets the tone for the appts She is truly a gift for the hospital All the staff is always welcoming and puts you at ease My husband and I made a hard decision to switch to Humboldt for all our medical needs because we were very unhappy with our current care. Its a bit of a drive for us now, but it has been the best decision we made. We hear the same from many people and make sure to tell them our experience. Thank you to all the staff :)

Tammy K is the BEST! Quick, easy, and so friendly. Plus, professional.

Tammy made me feel comfortable during testing

Bri was amazing and did a terrific job Probably the best and most time-efficient mammo I have ever had Thanks!

Jon was great!!!! Really liked him!!

I see Max and Jasa. They are awesome to work with! They understand my situation & always take the time to explain how my body is working (or not working) very thoroughly & help me to see how what they are doing (& having me do) is helping my body get better I am very grateful for our Physical Therapy Department & all those I encounter to make it a pleasant experience Thank you

Brian, Taylor and the whole team are wonderful!

Brian and Taylor are very good with the work they do with me! This is my third surgery that I have come to Humboldt hospital for my therapy. I came because Brian was there, but found the services from Taylor as well were very good and they get me to where I need to be post-surgery and no doubt I'll have the same outcome from my shoulder replacement therapy!

All the staff that I encountered were terrific! Laura was very kind, explained all things well! Sherri placed my IV with great skill! Joleen was kind as well assisting in the procedure room I have no concerns with Dr Adams caring for me, he's awesome! Thank you all for a fast, and great experience!

Great job by Doctor Adams and hospital staff

The nursing staff were great. Lisa was fantastic getting me ready prior to the procedure. Shannon did a great job explaining the anesthesia. Dr. Croo was awesome before and after in explaining. Lili was great after the procedure, even when I decided to take off the monitoring devices, highly recommend!

My nurse, Lisa Minor, was the best! So caring and explained everything she did. Always available for questions and assistance Very professional

Lindsay C was great - helpful

The ultrasound tech, Kelly, we had for our pregnancy anatomy scan on October 29 at 10:30 AM, was amazing. She's very kind, knowledgeable and friendly.

All-Star Cards NEW! All-Star Cards

What are “All-Star Cards”? These cards have had many names over the years but the principle of them remain the same

This is a recognition and reward program designed for employees to give praise when another employee goes above and beyond our Key Service Behaviors (KSBs) and Values. Please make sure to fill it out with the specific occurrence you noticed.

Example: “I observed [name of teammate] yesterday walking a patient to their car in the rain with an umbrella”.

Fill out when you observe an employee going above the standards set with our Key Service Behaviors and Values.

DO give specific examples – no generalized statements please DO fill out completely: including first and last name and department.

DO NOT take advantage of this tool - it’s specifically created to give people recognition for going ABOVE and BEYOND their daily duties not what is already expected of them.

Once filled out, place in our recognition boxes, Alison Angstrom’s mailbox, or slide under her office door.

YOU ASKED, WE LISTENED! New “tear away” feature so you can keep your card after you’ve used the $2 value.
