This is a friendly reminder that all initial BOY LPACs for students that are new to country, state and district are due by next Tuesday Sept. 12. Please carefully review the Process for Change of Placement document and hyperlinked resources STEP ONE of the behavior or academic checklist for existing special education students is an opportunity for the staff to thoughtfully collaborate to ensure the student’s IEP correctly reflects PLAAFPS (present level of academic achievement and functional performance statements), IEP goals to address each area of disability, as well as supplementary aids and services, and accommodations, and take time implement newly discovered strategies that may avoid the need for a change of placement.

There were multiple opportunities for teachers to attend training on this process this summer between Hays CON and beginning of the year PD offerings, and so many attended! It was wonderful. CampusPBIS,SEL,andBehaviorManagement

PBIS,which stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is a framework that districts use to promote and celebrate good behavior in the classroom.

SEL, or social-emotional learning, is the process of helping students develop the skills and mindsets they need to succeed in school and life—for example, skills like emotion regulation and social awareness.

While PBIS and SELare great on their own, they’reevenbetterwhenimplemented together. Research shows a strong positive correlation between behavior and SEL—meaning that kids with higher SELskills tend to behave better in school.

Covid

Unfortunately, Covid is still among us; we have seen an increase in infections since school started as we expected. DSHS and the CDC still recommends 5 days of isolation for individuals that test positive for Covid to prevent spread of infection. If a student’s positive test is disclosed to our campus nurses, we will provide a letter with the recommendations from DSHS and provide a possible return date.
