HANG OUT THE BUNTING IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE

Having navigated our way through Easter we now head towards May which brings us not one, not two, but three Bank Holidays – fantastic I hear you cry!

It can’t have escaped your notice that the extra Bank Holiday is dedicated to the celebration of the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort. But if, like me, your invitation to attend the ceremony got lost in the post then now is the time to start planning your own celebration.

One of the great things about the whole weekend is the opportunity for us to feel proud of our heritage and truly celebrate everything which this type of very British ceremony brings to everyone.

In September last year we all mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth II and for many of us she was the only Sovereign we had ever known in our lifetime. Whether you were a staunch Royalist or a casual observer, she touched the hearts of every single one of us. Now we have the opportunity to witness the Coronation of His Majesty the King and participate in some way in a ceremony which has remained largely unchanged in over 1,000 years and remains the only event of its type in Europe.

Apart from the traditional aspects of the ceremony I do like the little nod to the modern era with the use of what is described as a ‘relatively modern’ horse drawn carriage which has both air conditioning and electric windows……all the mod cons!

It is these little quirks, sitting alongside the fact that the King will be crowned with the solid gold, 17th Century St Edward’s Crown, which is only used at the moment of coronation that make this a truly ‘British’ affair.

I don’t know about you but I feel a little bit privileged to be able to witness this event and even though I won’t be lucky enough to attend I feel that we will all be playing our part in some way, whether that is by watching the live coverage on TV or having a street party.

A lot of wholesalers I have spoken to recently have said they intend to celebrate in style with many already getting the bunting ready to adorn the trade counter and hoisting up the banners to welcome their customers over the coming weeks – do send in your pictures as it would be great to see how you’re celebrating.

So let’s all embrace the feeling of goodwill which comes with such an occasion – it is after all an occasion which doesn’t happen often.

ZUMTOBEL GROUP SELECTS NEW CHARITY PARTNER

THE ZUMTOBEL GROUP ANNOUNCES NEW UK CHARITY PARTNER FOR 2023

Thorn and its sister brand Zumtobel are pleased to announce that they have selected the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) as their UK charity partner for 2023.

Launching in mid-March 2023, the Group’s objective is to give back to the EIC, which has assisted so many people within the industry. To achieve this goal, Thorn and Zumtobel have organised a series of fun events for everyone to participate in and have established a team of Charity Champions to manage the details. Employees are also encouraged to create their own events for customers to take part in. The brands are also participating in the EIC Power Lottery.

The first event, a virtual walking

challenge from Spennymoor to Chalfont, will take place in April, with colleagues pledging £1 for every mile walked and tracking their progress.

“We are thrilled to have been chosen as the Zumtobel Group’s charity partner in the UK. This partnership will enable us to continue supporting individuals in our

industry when they require need it the most. We look forward to collaborating with the Zumtobel Group to raise vital funds and awareness for our cause,” said Kate Adamczyk, Director of Marketing & Business Development at Electrical Industries Charity.

Paul Kilburn, Managing Director UK & Ireland at Zumtobel Group, stated: “We are looking forward to seeing what fun activities our teams come up with and hope that through our fundraising efforts, we can make a real difference to the lives of those who need it the most in our industry. The EIC has helped so many people spanning over 100 years; it’s fantastic that we now play a part in that achievement.”

DAME JUDITH HACKITT TO CHAIR ETIM UK DISCUSSION

Dame Judith Hackitt will chair ETIM UK’s panel discussion at Digital Construction Week 2023, highlighting the importance of digitalisation in the drive for building safety. The event will take place on 18 May at London’s ExCeL.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, Dame Judith conducted an Independent Review for UK Government into Building Regulations and Fire Safety. Since publishing her final report in 2018 she has continued to press for regulatory change and for industry culture change. Her recommendations for radical reform of the regulatory system recently received Royal Assent in the Building Safety Act 2022.

ETIM UK’s panel at Digital Construction Week, featuring four senior representatives from across the construction supply chain, will discuss building safety as a driver for digitalisation and the need for standardised product data to enable and accelerate the process.

John Newcomb, CEO at the BMF, said: “We are delighted that Dame Judith will host this important discussion to highlight the huge significance that high quality product data has for every step of the supply chain – contractors simply cannot work without it. The Hackitt Report and the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) is creating a step-change for building security in the UK and ETIM, because of its focus on a product’s technical performance, has a vital contribution to make in that work.”

Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said: “Everyone in the construction industry agrees that complete, accurate, up-to-date and traceable product information is of vital importance to our sector. We also agree that the manufacturer is the owner of that data. What is not clear, however, is what format that data should take and how it should move along the value chain efficiently so that it is usable by all players from building concept to demolition. The EDA is working

with manufacturers and wholesalers to adopt a standard data model, ETIM, so that data can be shared in their transactions and more widely across the full construction value chain. This standardised data is the gold from which the golden thread is woven and key to building safety.”

ETIM UK Ltd is a partnership between the BMF and the EDA. The panel discussion will be followed by a reception and lunch on the Sunborn Yacht Hotel, jointly hosted by the BMF and the EDA.

CKI PURCHASES CLIPACORE

Carl Kammerling International (CKI) has purchased Clipacore brand, a revolutionary tool system designed to eradicate a common and dangerous problem for users of core drills. Its purchase by CKI means that Clipacore will quickly become widely available to tradespeople across the UK.

Clipacore is a clip release system which allows users to change and remove core bits from drills quickly and effortlessly. Dismantling a core drill after use often requires physical strength and brute force, as torque tension locks components together. Clipacore was conceived by a heating engineer who broke his hand hammering a wrench to change a bit – a course of action likely to be familiar to anyone who regularly uses a core drill. The other issue with core drilling is waste concrete becoming wedged in the tool, another problem which has been solved with the Clipacore system. The Clipacore system is now distributed into the plumbing and heating sector through CKI subsidiary Nerrad Tools, available for purchase in store this Spring. It will also soon be available as part of the CKI portfolio of brands alongside C.K Tools, C.K Magma, avit and Kasp Security, with wider distribution anticipated later in the year. It’s expected to become an

STRESS VS ANXIETY KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

We’ve all heard of the terms stress and anxiety. But what exactly do they mean, and how can we tell the difference between the two?

What is stress?

Stress is something we all experience, and it’s a completely normal feeling. Stress is a physical and mental response to challenges or pressures that we face. It happens when our minds recognise a threat or a trigger.

It varies from person to person, and what one person may find stressful, another may not. It can also be positive and motivating, such as the stress that’s felt before competing in a race or giving a presentation. However, when stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can have negative effects on both your physical and mental health.

Stress can be triggered by lots of factors, from work pressures, relationships, and financial worries to major life changes. So, when life’s feeling a little challenging, you’ll likely start to feel stressed and overwhelmed.Someof

us find it harder to manage the feeling of stress than others but the good news is that stress is usually mild, short-lived and subsides after the trigger resolves.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is quite different. Unlike stress, which is something that occurs in response to an external factor or trigger, anxiety happens due to an internal factor or fear. Anxiety is a mental health condition caused by persistent, excessive worry or fear about everyday situations, events, or activities. Many people experiencing anxiety can’t explain why they’re feeling anxious, and it can manifest itself in lots of ways, physically and mentally. It can have a huge impact on how a person lives their day-to-day life. This is quite different from somebody who is feeling stressed, there’s usually a reason that can be identified as to what’s causing the stress.

What are the differences between

can happen without any clearly identifiable trigger. Most of the time, people who are under stress can continue with their day-to-day lives, complete tasks, and perform. Whereas, if someone is experiencing anxiety, it’s likely that the physical and mental emotions associated can stop a person from living their normal life. For example, a person with social anxiety may struggle to leave the house and interact with others.

Can long-term or repeated stress turn into anxiety?

If you’re experiencing long-term stress, it doesn’t mean that it will necessarily turn into anxiety. Many people can experience high levels of stress for long periods of time, and they don’t develop anxiety. However, for some people, chronic unmanaged stress could increase the chances of them developing an anxiety disorder.

PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER MAY2023 13 CHARITY UPDATE

FACE TO FACE

FACE TO FACE

QHow did you get involved in the industry?

A. Firstly, looking into my experiences and the skills that I have developed over the years, I have held roles in technical channel development and marketing so my move to the electrical/ lighting industry has been a natural progression. The industry offers similar technologies, go-to-market strategies, and customers, so it feels like I can make a positive impact.

When I joined my previous firm, I realised that the electrical industry has so much to offer given the work we do around connected solutions and automations as at the core of it lies the use of energy. This was new to me, intrigued me, has shaped my career for the past almost 15 years.

Also, I bring a variety of global experience to this role at Signify. I have had the fortune of working in the finance industry, in the auto industry and in the mining and construction industry. My experience of working in these industries has been in both developed and developing economies. I feel all this varied experience of over two decades has helped me round my thinking about the industry, the priorities and have an outlook of what the future holds.

QWhat do you think about the upcoming changes to the RoHS Directive and how could it impact the lighting sector?

A. The Restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations affect businesses that are involved with

electrical and electronic equipment. This includes manufacturers, importers, exporters, businesses that re-brand goods, and of course distributors. The regulations limit the use of hazardous substances such as mercury, lead and cadmium in the manufacture of new electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market in the UK.

For the lighting sector in particular, the legislation regulates the use of mercury in lighting products, impacting what products are permitted on the market for installation.

For general lighting purposes, a ban on Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLni lamps) and on T5 and T8 fluorescent Tubes comes into play from February 2024.

One of the most important changes introduced by RoHS2 is that it has become a CE Marking Directive, enforced under the EU’s New Legislative Framework (NLF)/ the UKCA mark in the UK. This means that in order to affix the CE Marking on the EEE, the manufacturer must meet the

requirements of the RoHS Directive in addition to the requirements of other applicable CE Marking Directives (e.g. EMC or the Low Voltage Directive).

As a major environmental regulation of electronics, RoHS is a step in the right direction to ensure lighting products like fluorescent lamps that are hazardous to humankind and our environment are banned. The question on the sales of fluorescent lighting was never previously under the spotlight due to the lack of the right replacement or alternative.

However, over the years, LED lighting has emerged, with like-for-like replacements that are a cost-effective, mercury-free, sustainable alternative to fluorescents. While the EcoDesign regulation will have removed many conventional lighting products based on their poor energy performance, such as the ban of fluorescent T8s in August 2024, RoHS is poised now to address the products left behind on the basis of their toxicity

QWhat is Signify doing to promote lighting sustainability and a circular economy?

A. Signify is a global leader in an industry that has led the wider electrical products for construction and refurbishment sectors on a path of everincreasing efficiencies and energy savings through continuous invention, innovation, and development.

The advent of LED, a ‘sea change’ in energy efficiency and sustainable decarbonising products, has been enhanced with the application of Central and Building Management Systems and intelligent controls such as the Signify

14 MAY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
This month we quizzed Signify’s new CEO for UK&I, Nico van der Merwe, on changes and trends in the lighting sector

Interact range which turns high efficiency LED into Ultra efficient lighting systems capable of delivering 80% + savings over traditional platforms.

Sustainability is in our DNA. It’s our purpose to unlock the extraordinary potential of light for brighter lives and a better world. By changing the way that we create and use light, we can improve lives and have a positive impact on the planet. Over the past 125 years, Signify has pioneered many key breakthroughs in sustainable lighting, being a driving force behind several leading technological innovations, including LED.

We are now on a new five-year journey out to 2025, focusing on doubling our positive impact on the environment and society under the Brighter Lives, Better World 2025 sustainability programme, going beyond carbon neutrality. The programme is central to everything we do, everything from products to services. As a result, we were recently included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for the sixth consecutive year.

More broadly, Signify’s Brighter Lives, Better World 2025 program sets bold targets across the areas of climate action, circularity, and societal impact. We understand that making our economy more circular has become more important than ever. Today society uses 1.7 times the resources than our planet can sustain, and resource scarcity and waste have reached worrying proportions. At Signify, we are committed to responsible consumption and production (SDG12) with products that can be reprinted, refurbished, reused or recycled. This will help us to achieve our goal of doubling our revenues from circular products, systems and services to 32% by the end of 2025. To date, we have achieved 31% versus a baseline of 16% and are already nearly at our 2025 target.

QWhat are the upcoming lighting trends to keep an eye on?

A. This year brought with it familiar problems for cities around the world. Many countries are still facing a multitude of crises: climate change continues to accelerate, economies are under pressure, and consumers are coping with inflation and skyrocketing energy bills. But a new year also brings a renewed sense of optimism and fresh focus.

Firstly, the EU and UK have passed legislation that prohibits the use of conventional fluorescent lighting. The ban has been a long time coming –not only are fluorescent bulbs outdated and inefficient, they contain harmful materials like phosphorus and mercury. With the ban coming into effect in early 2023 in EU and 2024 in the UK, the shift to energy-efficient LED is set to accelerate even more than it has over the last two decades.

Secondly, I expect that the switch from traditional lighting to LED will see an acceleration in the public and business space. Though it is not a new concept, the immense energy-saving benefits from LED lighting continue to be either misunderstood or overlooked. Most people are now aware that LED lighting is more energy-efficient than conventional lighting –at least 50% more efficient, in fact –but the full potential of what can be achieved remains unrealised. For a start, connecting LEDs and managing them via a software-based lighting management system raises increases energy savings to as much as 80%. Therefore, I feel connectivity that is driven by purpose will be a huge trend for 2023.

Also, city budgets are tight. Whether it’s the strain of post-pandemic regeneration or the global impact of the war in Ukraine, many economies are at breaking point. City decision-makers

may have the ambition to develop and improve their infrastructure, but without funding it’s simply not viable. Luckily, the UK Government is starting to take action. Slowly but surely, programmes are being established that promise to support infrastructure projects and help cities achieve the goal of becoming sustainable while at the same time improving the health and wellbeing of citizens. Take for instance the recent announcement on the Energy Efficiency Taskforce that aims to finance energy reduction and decarbonisation projects.

But these difficult conditions also testified the relevance of Signify’ s extensive portfolio of sustainable and connected lighting solutions. With climate change, the energy crisis hitting Europe and spiralling inflation creating a perfect storm in the economy, customers in all spheres recognise the urgent environmental and financial need to reduce energy consumption.

QWhat are your aims and objectives for the year ahead?

A. Signify is a company with a rich heritage, a powerful product portfolio, a talented team, and a strong leadership position in sustainability. I am sure we are well positioned to further grow the business and industry while continuing to make a positive impact on society and the environment through our innovations. The UK and Ireland have exciting opportunities in the market for us and our customers and that is what I want to make possible for us in the new role. This objective will also ultimately help drive us closer to the Signify five frontier strategy for growth where we focus on being more customer centric, enable differentiated offers, growth for sustainability, drive digitalisation and be a great place to work. STATION MASTERS

LEDVANCE LED lighting solutions have been installed across platforms 1-8 at London’s historic King’s Cross Station in a move that will significantly reduce maintenance costs and energy consumption while future-proofing the building’s illumination systems. The recently completed retrofit saw numerous traditional 400W metal halide lamps replaced with LEDVANCE High Bay DALI 115W 4000k luminaires with IP65 protection, fitted with high quality aluminium reflectors.

The Victorian building is considered to be a site of national significance and even small changes to its structure require planning authority approval. While looking the same as the old lights and providing the same amount of brightness – both essential requirements – the new LEDVANCE units use much less electricity and last far longer, providing a constant luminous flux across their five-year guaranteed lifespan. Thanks to their DALI-2 certification, they can also be used with any lighting-control system that may be installed in the future at the station, another important consideration.

“The old lamps were failing frequently and changing them required specialist lift equipment which, for health and

LEDVANCE. “The station needed new luminaires that were far more reliable and energy efficient, but to keep in line with the original appearance of the building they had to look the same as the old lamps.”

LEDVANCE provided full support throughout the nine-month project, including a detailed lighting design, full technical advice and ongoing aftercare. “We visited the site numerous times to discuss what we were offering and provided samples of the product for approval,” continued David Goddard. “We’ve even supplied voltage meters so the customer can carry out tests on site in case of any issue. This was a very successful installation, and everyone is

really pleased with the results.”

Over 160 High Bay DALI 155W, 4000K LEDs and reflectors have been installed across eight platforms at King’s Cross, providing energy savings of up to 60% compared to conventional high bay luminaires. LEDVANCE High Bay solutions are an ideal replacement for luminaires with mercury vapour or metal halide lamps as they offer the flexibility of being dimmable and can switch on and off instantly, allowing savings to be realised through daylight and occupancy-dependent operation. This is ideal for warehouses, logistics halls and other industrial applications as well as high ceiling environments such as shopping malls, airports, transport stations and commercial buildings. In addition to the much lower energy consumption, LEDVANCE High Bay LEDs need replacing less frequently leading to maintenance cost savings.

PICK ‘N’ FIX

Traditional dome top cable glands are ideal for creating simple and secure entry points for bulkheads and enclosures. However, when access to the interior of the enclosure is restricted or space is tight, installation time can be greatly increased and it may even be necessary to adopt specialist tooling – or, if the panel is large, two installers may be required to assemble the glands into position. Here, Michael Crowther, Product Development Director at Hylec-APL, outlines the advantages of its Kwik-Fix cable glands for electrical installers in these scenarios.

Control cabinets, plant switchgear and building services, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, all require access for cabling. Electrical installers or building services engineers will usually be tasked with commissioning, installing and securing such access – ideally as quickly and cost effectively as possible. But there are plenty of situations where access to the inside of such enclosures is restricted, and space is often at a premium – making traditional solutions awkward to install – while the harsh environment they are usually situated in demands that such access must be weatherproof and not allow ingress of water, dust or dirt.

While traditional cable glands are ideal solutions for many electrical installations, each application has its own

dome top glands, which use a rear mounting locknut to secure the cable gland in such scenarios. But plant and mechanical engineers often don’t put much faith in rapid assembly cable glands – and their reluctance is hardly surprising, as rapid assembly products typically require a special tool for assembly, are often unwieldy to install and form an unreliable seal.

Hylec-APL’s Kwik Fix cable glands represent a real advancement of rapid assembly cable gland design – and don’t require a special assembly tool either.

Kwik-Fix cable glands

Designed for use in applications where access to the interior of a bulkhead or enclosure is restricted, the patented Kwik Fix cable gland is installed from just one side of a panel, without any special tools, doesn’t require a rear mounted

and is especially suitable for use with large switch cabinets, as well as cooling and heating systems.

The Kwik Fix cable gland is installed by placing the mounting foot of the gland through the entry hole. The mounting foot is designed with a lip that can be pulled tight against the inner wall; an external hexagonal locking nut is then turned anticlockwise to hold the gland in place and form an IP68 seal. Once locked in place you can install the corresponding cable in the traditional manner, tightening the top dome nut in a clockwise direction.

This means that the gland can be easily mounted and dismounted from one side, making installation and maintenance far simpler. In addition, the gland takes up less internal space, leaving more space for internal wiring within the enclosure. The gland can be

and 100°C. It carries UL and VDE approval, boasts integrated strain relief and is available in all standard hole sizes, M16, M20, M25 and M32 (suitable for cable sizes from 5–17mm), in RAL 7001 (Silver Grey), RAL 7035 (Light Grey) and RAL 9005 (Jet Black).

Kwik Fix cable glands also offer advantages when connecting electric vehicle (EV) charging point enclosures. Where the incoming cable comes from behind the enclosure, through a wall, the Kwik-Fix gland can be fixed on the inside of the enclosure without the installer having to get behind the enclosure wall to tighten up a locknut. This method can quickly and easily provide an IP68-rated connection to an EV charging point.

Kwik-Fix cable glands are the answer in a tight spot!

been forced to use products that do not guarantee the seal. Also, they often required spanners or special tools. Kwik Fix cable glands are easily installed and removed from one side only, making installation and maintenance much simpler and reducing costs. Moreover, these glands take up less space, meaning a smaller enclosure could be used or leaving more room for wiring.

ELECTRIFICATION FOR THE NATION

Record EV sales shows that the UK’s transition to electrification is accelerating at pace, but why does this present a growing opportunity for installers, and what can wholesalers do to help them?

Jordan

co-founder of myenergi, tells us more.

According to the latest insight from Zap Map, there are now more than 38,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the UK across 23,066 locations – a 33% increase since February 2022. When it comes to charging at home or at the workplace, estimates suggest that more than 400,000 chargers have already been installed to support the 700,000 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) now on British roads.

However, with the 2030 ban on the sales of all new petrol and diesel cars rapidly approaching, demand for charging solutions continues to increase. This, combined with legislation requiring every new build UK home with associated parking to have an EV chargepoint installed as standard, provides a significant opportunity for electrical installers.

Charging ahead

Domestic EV chargers are quickly becoming commonplace on UK driveways, as more households ditch

their dirty diesel for cleaner, greener electric vehicles. Although installations are currently only responsible for blocking out a small percentage of order books, this is changing fast. Strict regulations and the requirement for commissioning mean that DIY installation is not an option.

At myenergi, we’re best known for developing the world’s first solar-compatible EV charger, zappi, which can charge your EV either through mains electricity (with options to optimise

around your tariff), or from 100% green energy generated from renewable devices. With its user-friendly features and the ability to connect to the myenergi app, customers have full control over their charging experience. Additionally, and most importantly from an installation perspective, zappi is one of the easiest devices on the market to fit thanks to PEN fault protection and no requirement for an earth rod, resulting in more efficient installations. All of this makes zappi a hugely popular device. With the EV industry quickly moving past the early adoption stage, mass market consumers are waiting in the wings and installers need to be ready.

To support independents, myenergi operates an online platform to connect zappi customers with certified electrical installers across the UK. The step-by-step solution takes the customer through the purchase process and connects them to their closest myenergi-approved independent –providing busy installers with hassle-free sales leads.

LIVING THE SOLAR DREAM

With renewable energy an ever present subject on the mind of the general public and with energy costs a constant concern, it is important that electrical professionals stay aware of the latest technological developments. Here, Eugene Lucarelli, Marketing Manager of GoodWe, discusses some of the essential components for those involved in residential solar installations.

For many, self-generated power is akin to living the dream. In the last few years, as energy prices have spiralled out of control and people have become ever more anxious to save money, the idea that a few pieces of kit could be installed at your home to save you from the financial stress of yet another price increase can be an incredibly tempting prospect. It is no shock that solar sales have been increasing as a result.

Two components of a residential solar setup that are sometimes overlooked are the inverter and the battery. For consumers, many might not know the meaning of the word inverter, and they may well wonder why they need a battery. After all, they are probably most used to batteries being a source of power, not a storage solution.

Inverter innovation

Aside from a little electrical education, another stumbling block for some homeowners when considering the

switch to solar is the price. While the payback time has been getting shorter and shorter, the upfront cost can still present a challenge for many –especially in the last year or so when levels of disposable income have been hit fairly hard. Hybrid inverters can help homeowners take their first steps into solar without needing to come up with the full initial investment, making them a great ‘halfway house’ between grid reliance and self-generation.

Series, allows users to harvest power

from an array of solar panels and use it in their devices and appliances, just like a traditional inverter. Its integrated plug-and-play functionality and compact, lightweight design means solar PV installations can be quicker and easier to complete than ever before. Meanwhile, its smart home integration makes it the long-term choice for forward-thinking homeowners.

A key feature of the ES G2 is its automatic switching to back-up power mode in less than 10ms when connected to a battery if a power cut occurs, ensuring minimal disruption and that key appliances remain in operation. It also makes possible the addition of a battery at a later date, meaning users can set up a solar system now, and expand it as their energy requirements grow or as their finances permit.

Progress with power storage

When they do want to expand, selecting a battery specifically designed for residential application, such as the Lynx

RENEWABLES & GREEN TECHNOLOGY
26 MAY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Home U series, is always a safe bet. This low voltage lithium battery can help end users with any fallout from cost-of-living difficulties.

With plug-and-play functionality thanks to pre-wired communication cables, the Lynx Home U Series makes PV installations fast and simple. A key highlight is that the battery series can be scaled from 5.4kWh to 32.4kWh, and with self-detecting modules and a stackable design, it eases the commissioning burden on installers. The intuitive design and smart features mean that electrical professionals can accelerate the UK’s pathway to net zero and start to reduce over-reliance on the grid.

Seizing solar success

The ES G2 and Lynx Home U are two of GoodWe’s latest offerings aimed at the

electrical professionals to consider solar as an addition to their current portfolio of

up from 1,000 a week in July 2020, according to Solar Energy UK. Electricians looking to capitalise on this market growth can do so by investing time in training opportunities such as the GoodWe Plus+ programme.

Hosted online by a GoodWe technical specialist, the GoodWe PLUS+ training is free to attend and run in three separate parts, designed to help those with a background in electronics learn everything from solar system design and installation, through to commissioning and aftermarket servicing.

By embracing renewable energy and making steps towards solar, electrical professionals can move the UK down the path of net zero while increasing their income at the same time.

Similarly to the Solar iBoost, homeowners can reduce their reliance on fossil fuel-generated energy, making it a wise investment for the environment and their wallets. Better still, it’s easy to install. The EV charger has been designed with built-in safety monitoring. For most installations, an earth rod isn’t necessary.

A winning combination for wholesalers

As businesses look to offer comprehensive renewable energy solutions to their customers, the Solar iBoost and Veva Charger are a winning combination. Both of Marlec’s innovative products enable homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint. This makes the Solar iBoost and Veva Charger an essential investment for any homeowner looking to positively impact the environment and save money on their energy bills.

Marlec’s Solar iBoost and Veva Charger are products wholesalers can confidently offer their customers. The all-in-one solutions provide significant benefits for homeowners, including reduced energy bills, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and a positive environmental impact. As wholesalers look for ways to meet the increasing demand for renewable energy solutions, the Solar iBoost and Veva Charger are two products that should be at the top of their list.

HOME AUTOMATION

Andy Douglas of Timeguard explains why a strong Wi-Fi offering is key to operating a reliable, stress-free smart home.

WHY USE WI-FI

No one can deny the attraction of a fully automated, integrated home to deliver top levels of efficiency and ease of living. Installers are clamouring to acquire the skills they need to deliver real intelligence in building control, and employers are playing their part in supporting skills development with initiatives like CEDIA’s NextGen. The market is being primed!

Meanwhile, most of our homes aren’t geared up for advanced home automation. High end integrated control, where devices work in concert with each other, usually requires rewiring that involves going a bit beyond adding a neutral to the switch outlets, and adds major expense to a project. You might imagine that any new build or recent rewiring would be smart tech-ready, but don’t bank on it just yet.

So what is the appropriate technology solution for the

customers who want smart control without the major expense? The answer is good Wi-Fi technology – with the emphasis on good! You need reliable products and a consistently reliable third-party control app like TuYa. (Manufacturers’ own apps are often limited and unlikely to have the development finance of a global platform like TuYa to maintain reliability and add new features).

Wi-Fi: a catch-all solution

Wi-fi has proved to be the ideal answer, giving app-based control of devices from within the home or anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection or Wi-Fi signal. Bluetooth, Zigbee etc have a role in some projects, but it is Wi-Fi that is the

catch-all, covering all the bases to give users both close-quarters control and remote access.

Yes, the performance of wired systems is usually better than wireless systems, with system latency much lower. However, unless you are at the top end of the market and need to control multiple circuits and devices seamlessly to execute profiles/scenes, this is a marginal concern. The increasing reliability of both Wi-Fi connections and control apps has pretty much sorted any issues

32 MAY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Popular Wi-Fi controlled devices include high quality webcams, external lighting, detectors, timers and switches and wall sockets. On/Off, time control, detection ranges etc can all be controlled remotely via a smartphone from the armchair, on the commute home or at the holiday villa. Users will get feedback on switching status on their app, so they can relax, knowing that devices at home are doing their job.

Adding other devices

Product developers are meeting the demand for interworking between devices on Wi-Fi networks. Indirect load activation, where the load is physically connected via the switched live, means that another compatible smart device can be triggered wirelessly. The new Timeguard Wi-Fi controlled twin LED floodlights offer this feature so, for

around the property, indoors and out to switch on.

Product grouping

Product grouping is a useful feature for linking lighting circuits together wirelessly if the installer wants devices, such as all lights or lighting and a room heater, to switch On/Off together at the touch of a button. This is a feature easily

Yes, it’s a toe in the water compared to mansions with home cinemas and the like, but end users are loving home smart home Wi-Fi devices. More to the point, installers are having fun setting it up and in our industry there are few market forces more powerful than an enthusiastic installer!

HOME AUTOMATION

WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY –PUTTING USERS IN CONTROL

Wireless technology has steadily become a bigger presence in most people’s everyday lives. Whether it’s at work, home, a stadium or even in cars, people rely on wireless technology for information, for entertainment, to control devices and appliances, to communicate and much more.

Convenience and ease of use will always be important features for smart products, for example, calling out “Alexa, lights on” when you walk into a room. However, it is the element of control that has assumed growing importance, particularly in the prevailing environment where energy efficiency remains a hot topic.

This is where a product like Scolmore’s Click Smart+ wireless smart scenario switch comes into its own. The battery powered wireless smart scenario switch allows you to control multiple lights and appliances. With one click, you can create multiple smart solutions, bringing added convenience, comfort, security, energy saving and ultimately more control in the home.

It offers many possibilities. You can set routines for lights and appliances to turn on and off as required to help create a more energy efficient home. You can also create different atmospheres for each room by personalising the lights. Working in conjunction with the Click Smart+ hub (sold separately) the smart switch offers six possible activation clicks – one to three on the up click and one to three on the down click – to maximise the scenarios that can be controlled.

The smart switch is designed with Scolmore’s GridPro module benefits in mind, allowing users to choose any finish plate desired. It can be installed using the clip-in method with Yoke assembly or using the screw method directly to the front plate. The module is available in a white or black finish. It is configurable within the ClickSmart+ app for remote switching –with wireless pairing to ClickSmart+ switch and dimming devices. Multiple devices can be added to each Tap-to-Run action and the grouping of actions can create a range of scenarios around the home e.g., leaving home – one single click to switch off all paired devices.

Smart control outdoors

It isn’t just inside the home that wireless technology solutions are being embraced. With the garden being treated as an additional room for householders, smart solutions are being used to bring power and control outdoors. We all know just how valuable a space the garden proved to be during lockdown. In many instances, sheds and summer houses were repurposed as offices, outdoor bars were built and decking and gazebos installed and furnished to extend the living space. Gardens were given a lot more attention and consumers were looking to professional installers to help with a range of outdoor projects.

With power brought to the outdoor spaces, Scolmore’s Click Smart+ range will allow remote control of any electrical elements outside – switching on lighting,

controlling an outdoor appliance or water feature for example, as well as the ability to switch off power for security reasons.

The Click Smart+ range has been created to simplify and streamline connected home products – lighting controls, smart sockets, security cameras and sensors. It utilises Zigbee technology –one of the most widely adopted smart home communication protocols. Zigbee certified devices require the Click Smart+ Hub and communicate with each other using a mesh network. This creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range.

The future is wireless

According to a report from Research and Markets, the global smart homes market is expected to grow from $91.79 billion in 2022 to $205.61 billion in 2026 at a CAGR of 22.3%.

The smart homes market consists of sales of smart home solutions that are defined as a system that connects with the appliances in the house for automating various tasks. Smart homes offer homeowners comfort, security, energy efficiency and convenience by allowing them to control their smart devices. They are remotely controlled through a smart home app on the smartphone or various other networked devices.

Katie Plumstead, Group Marketing Manager at Scolmore Group, looks at the benefits of some of the smart products proving popular with end users and outlines how wholesalers can help drive demand.

PICTURE

With the CCTV market continuing to show strong growth, Matt Parton, Product Development Manager at ESP, believes wholesalers are in a prime position to help drive up sales of higher specification systems for larger, commercial projects.

According to the Electronic Security Systems and Admission Control Market Report UK 2021-2025, from AMA Research, the market for electronic security products and services grew steadily between 2015 and 2019, before a sharp contraction in 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the construction sector and on economic activity more generally. The report describes the UK electronic security market as mature, especially in the nonresidential sector, in terms of the proportion of premises that have some form of security equipment installed. This means that demand for replacement and upgrades is the key feature of the market and accounts for the majority of end-user sales.

Technological developments have driven the replacement market, with heavy expenditure on R&D a key characteristic of the market. Leading technological trends include improvements in image quality, thermal imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), deep-learning analytics for CCTV, cloud based solutions for video management systems, and facial recognition and other biometrics for access control. The Covid-19 pandemic has generated further development of specific applications such as management of crowd density and touchless access control.

Specialist requirements

With CCTV accounting for the largest part of the electronic security sector,

there is plenty of opportunity for wholesalers and contractors to take a share of this growing market. For many installers working within the electrical industry, and the wholesalers supplying them, CCTV will be seen as a security solution mainly for the domestic end of the market. However, according to ESP, with the right knowledge of the products, solutions and support services available to satisfy larger, more complex projects, wholesalers are in a prime position to target those customers with more specialist requirements.

This is where it pays for wholesalers to partner up with a reputable supplier who can not only provide a comprehensive range of security solutions to cover a wide variety of project applications, but also has the expertise and experience in the planning, design and ongoing support that will reassure contractors that they will be providing the best possible security solution for their clients.

ESP has been supplying CCTV solutions for the professional installer

market for over 25 years and continues to invest in the development of the range to make sure that contractors have access to systems that harness the latest technologies, are quick and easy to install and boast a raft of features and benefits. The latest development of the category saw the launch of the 24/7 Colour IP POE CCTV range, which takes the company’s CCTV offer to another level.

Night-time monitoring

When it comes to CCTV security, colour-related information can play a vital role in identifying the detail of activities, particularly in the hours of darkness. Conventional cameras with infrared lighting will only provide black and white images for night-time monitoring. This can result in people or vehicles, for example, appearing blurred and blending into the background, making it difficult to discern crucial elements. Providing sharp detail, in colour, day or night, ESP’s 24/7 colour CCTV range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions for a range of applications from

By providing 8MP recording, the NVRs offer support for high resolution cameras in record, playback and live view modes.

Best results on site

For these CCTV projects that require larger systems and specific cameras, ESP believes that pre-planning is vital and that producing and working to a professional design will mean the best possible system is specified to get the best results on site. The design service is able to generate computer generated models of a system’s live view from the cameras, a useful tool to ensure a client

committing to the system. As well as providing computer generated previews from the camera locations, the service will provide recommendations for the total amount of cable required for installation, suitable hard drive capacity and will also highlight the record duration, resolution and ESP camera part number required - making specifying an installation simpler.

With access to a comprehensive range of CCTV systems as well as the support of a highly experienced technical team, contractors can also take advantage of ESP’s specialist design service. A team of dedicated design engineers will work with professional installers to assist with specifying the right system for project-based applications.

CK TOOLS CABLE STRIPPERS

C.K Tools has launched a range of cable strippers designed to tackle low smoke zero hydrogen (LS0H) cable. Use of LS0H cable is increasing as specifiers bid to improve fire safety, but stripping this much tougher material is a challenge.

Now widespread in Ireland and the USA, use of LS0H cable is on the rise in the UK. While PVC cable jacketing may be fire resistant, it can generate around 50 per cent its weight in smoke when exposed to high heat or flames. This thick, acrid smoke is highly toxic, corrosive, and can damage electrical equipment. Toxic smoke inhalation causes more fire-related deaths than fires themselves. As such, many specifiers are opting to replace PVC or other cable jacketing with LS0H, and – with the legacy of the Grenfell Tower tragedy looming large – it is expected that regulations to this effect will soon be introduced.

Faced with LS0H, many electricians have reported challenges in stripping the cable, as standard cable strippers fail to meet the strength of the thermoplastic material. C.K Tools’ new LS0H cable stripper, however, has been designed specifically for the task.

Compatible with round, flat, and LS0H cabling, C.K Tools’ latest strippers make light work of all cable types thanks to their two titanium nitrade coated blades and four cable brackets. The range includes a 10mm flat and LS0H bracket, a 6mm flat and LS0H bracket, a 2.5mm flat and LS0H bracket, and an 8-28mm round bracket.

The stripper itself boasts a self-locking switch, automatic blade protection, and keyless blade adjustment, alongside the titanium nitrade coated blades. The range is available as a set with the stripper included, and LS0H brackets can also be purchased as a set of three.

ESP FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

ESP’s MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm system is aimed at small to medium contractors, offering them a highly flexible and adaptable system that will save them time and money on the installation process.

Two-Wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. Unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, MAGDUO utilises intelligent two-wire technology, which allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel - enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material costs.

In total ESP’s MAGDUO range comprises 25 individual products including two, four and eight zone fire panels (available in a grey or black finish), as well as repeater panels – also in grey and black – with the four and eight zone panels able to support up to eight repeater panels. A FlexiPoint detector is programmable to seven different modes including smoke and heat detection and there are various sounders, strobes and call points in the range.

With its adaptability, speed of installation and cost-effectiveness, MAGDUO provides an ideal fire alarm solution for a range of small to medium sized projects such as restaurants, retail outlets, schools, offices, apartments and hotels.

Recolight has been working with the lighting industry for several years to help drive a more sustainable, circular economy approach. Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive of Recolight, explains why a WEEE Compliance scheme, that offers a free recycling service for lighting, has taken this approach.

All too often, we assume that if old lighting is replaced with new lighting, we are meeting our environmental obligations if we get the waste fittings recycled. We need to change that thinking.

The principles within the waste hierarchy mean that reducing the amount of new product, and reusing or extending the life of existing product, should take priority over recycling. We must fully explore those options for each project first, before going down the “replace and recycle” route. Recycling degrades value, and much of the embedded carbon within a used product is lost.

At Recolight, we put sustainability at the heart of everything we do. In practical terms, that means more actions to support the lighting industry in transitioning to a more circular, low carbon economy. More webinars, more training workshops and more events to give companies the tools they need to get involved.

The packed agenda will include authoritative updates on UK and EU legislation, and a discussion of some of the key specifications, including those for circularity, embedded carbon, and lifecycle assessment, such as the CIBSE TM65 and TM66. We will also hear from end-user panels on the steps they expect lighting producers to take.

Webinars: One-hour sessions that include an overview of sustainability metrics for the lighting industry, case studies from lighting manufacturers that are taking big steps to become more sustainable, a session dedicated to making Cat A fit-outs more sustainable, and a session focused on forthcoming changes to the WEEE regulations.

TM66: Recolight will launch an independent certification service to the CIBSE/SLL TM66 specification. This will help manufacturers demonstrate the extent to which products comply with circular economy principles.
