Be prepared

A

very warm welcome to the first PBM issue of 2026 and I sincerely hope you had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the New Year festivities. Doubtless well deserved, as I’m absolutely certain we are all relieved to put 2025 behind us. What an awful year.

Yes, so much for the mantra from a couple of years back of ‘survive ‘til 2025’, awaiting the inevitable cyclical uptick that would kick everything back into gear. The previous time a new Labour Government was elected, they told us: ‘Things can only get better.’ How times have changed…

Looking back at my column from 12 months ago, I could have saved everyone a lot of trouble by just re-running the whole thing.

Sample quote from Jan 2024: “Unforced errors and a long wait until the autumn Budget engendered a somewhat surreal sense of limbo, then only made worse by the reaction to some of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ proposals.”

Or consider: “Many merchants and suppliers alike have stated that these decisions are forcing them to reconsider previous plans to invest in people and plant…”

And then for balance: “To offer a more optimistic view, Government rhetoric on the importance of the construction industry as both an engine for growth and a pathway to improving living standards remains strong.”

Plus ça change indeed. In so many ways, 2025 was at best a wasted year. We largely still await action to match the pronouncements, but have to take solace that the underlying conditions — a general shortage of housing and the necessity of upgrades to the existing stock, to name just two key factors — demand

One final caveat here. Last January already represented yet another year of missed opportunities, and I concluded with the following: “I have an alarming sense of déjà vu about much of what I have written above. One can only hope that this time next year, we’ll be reflecting on a period of frenetic activity that delivers increased sales and profits, all supported by growing teams of eager new recruits.”

Clearly I was dramatically wrong, but if the picture remains unchanged in 12 months hence, I’m running this exact column again.

Word-for-word…

Moving on, then. I rarely delve into too much detail here about the stories we cover later in the issue (that is what the Contents page is for!) but on signing the pages off for this edition, it is striking that what has changed over the last couple of years are the huge leaps forward in some of the subjects we discuss.

Technology, and how innovation can drive efficiencies in areas such as stock management, sales optimisation or transport management, have always been a key focus. Indeed, digitisation has been high on the agenda for some time, not least buoyed by the rapid adoption of new methodologies necessitated

We’re regularly using language and outlining concepts that were barely acknowledged even a few short years ago, but are now increasingly business essentials. Of course, too many have sadly been defeated by the sustained downturn. But in general terms, for all the stagnation in the wider economy, the merchant sector has simply refused to stand still.

And whilst it may not be positively impacting the bottom line just yet, the readiness for that brighter future is looking promising.

NEWS UPDATE New BMF Finance Forum Chair James Norton, Group Managing Director of Frank Key Group and Executive Vice Chair of NBG, has been appointed Sector Chair of the BMF Finance Forum. A vital role in the BMF’s organisation, the Finance Forum discusses outcomes aligned with Budget announcements and major financial developments that impact on the multi-billion pound sector.

With an extensive track record in the finance sector, James joined Frank Key as Finance Director in 2005 shortly after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. He was promoted to Group Managing Director in 2011 and has guided the business through sustained strategic growth, operational improvement, and cultural renewal.

Boxing clever STARK UK invited local schools, community groups, tradespeople and businesses to join the second phase of its Homes for Nature campaign, donating free materials such as non-treated wooden pallets to build ‘bat boxes’ to support hibernation this winter.

Rolled out across Jewson, JP Corry and Normans, the call to action built on the successful start to the initiative which saw schools, youth groups, Girl Guides and others creating habitats for hedgehogs ahead of their hibernation season.

Homes for Nature is another example of how the group is highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability, with its strategic plans including the roll-out of sustainability ambassadors and dedicated sustainability centres across its branch network.

timber imports ‘nudged upwards’ during Q3 according to tduk

On the up?

The most recent timber import figures from Timber Development UK, covering Q3 2025, revealed “an ongoing mixed picture for the sector” with year-to-date volumes still trailing 2024 but “showing some signs of improvement as the year progressed.”

The TDUK statistics confirmed that total imports in the first nine months of 2025 reached 7.01 million m³ — some 2.1% below the 7.15 million m³ recorded in the same period of 2024. However, this gap has narrowed since the half-year point when volumes were down by 2.9%.

This slight uplift has been driven by a need to replenish stocks after the “flurry of construction activity we saw in Q2.” This resulted in a more positive third quarter for imports, which saw higher volumes than in Q3 2024 across the softwood, hardwood, plywood, OSB and engineered wood product sectors.

Overall imports for the quarter were only 0.2% lower than Q3 2024, with a marked drop in MDF imports preventing combined volumes from moving into year-on-year growth.

Solid wood imports from January to September were 2.5% lower than in the same time period in 2024, with panel products down by 1.3%. Weaker demand for softwood and a

significant 25% fall in imported MDF remain the main factors holding back overall growth.

By contrast, hardwood, particleboard and OSB imports have all edged ahead of 2024 levels, with hardwood plywood, softwood plywood and engineered wood products also delivering consistent gains throughout 2025.

Nick Boulton, TDUK Head of Technical and Trade, said: “The latest timber import figures for Q1-3 of 2025 do show a slight improvement, albeit from a very low base, with several product categories showing signs of uplift in the third quarter in particular. This is most likely restocking after the raised construction activity we saw at mid-year. That said, the market remains difficult, and overall volumes remain behind last year’s levels.

“The slight improvement is welcome, but it underlines just how sensitive demand continues to be across the sector. We will need to see sustained stability in 2026 before confidence can fully return to the market.”

More backing for Data Yard Building Materials Digital Services, the joint venture between the BMF and NMBS, behind the creation of the ‘Data Yard’ industry-owned data pool, has gained support from two of the largest merchant groups in the sector, with Travis Perkins plc and Selco Builders Warehouse joining BMDS as external shareholders.

Paul Beaman, Group Commercial Director - Merchanting at Travis Perkins, and Selco Commercial Director David Lennon have been appointed to the BMDS Board whilst the announcement signifies that it has achieved 70% of its investment target.

BMF Chair Richard Hill commented: “Through BMDS we are creating a resilient, future-proof solution to streamline the

sharing of product information that benefits the entire building materials supply chain. I am delighted to welcome Travis Perkins plc and Selco to the project.

“Together, we are ensuring the supply chain is better equipped for the future, benefitting merchants, suppliers and customers across the UK.” John Newcomb, BMF CEO, added: “The addition of Travis Perkins plc and Selco as shareholders in BMDS marks a pivotal step forward for our industry’s digital transformation. Their support not only strengthens the reach and impact of Data Yard but also demonstrates a shared commitment to innovation and collaboration within the building materials sector.”

WOseley urges greater action on apprenticeships despite budget cash pledge

Removing the barriers The parent company of Plumb Centre and Renewables Centre has warned that the UK’s trade sector remains in an “apprentice crunch”, despite the Chancellor’s Budget announcement that apprenticeships will now be free for employers and learners.

This is in response to the findings of a report from TrustMark, supported by Wolseley, which showed that “cost is only one barrier in a far more complex system.” According to the findings, the “vast majority of plumbing, heating and RMI businesses still feel unable to take on apprentices due to time pressures, burdensome paperwork and inadequate training provision.”

Issues that free course fees alone will not fix.

The report, Skilled to Build: Empowering the UK’s RMI Sector for a Better Future, shows that almost four in ten businesses (39%) say the paperwork and bureaucracy involved in finding and recruiting an apprentice is too burdensome, while nearly a third (29%) report inadequate support from training providers.

Employers also say they lose significant

productivity “because they spend almost half their time supervising apprentices which is time they simply cannot afford to give up.”

Meanwhile, apprenticeship completion rates have collapsed from 55% (2017/2018) to 35% (2022/2023).

Following the Budget announcement that vocational courses will now count towards the Government’s new 50% higher education target (see page 12), Wolseley warns that policy ambition will not translate into workforce growth unless these deeper, structural barriers are addressed.

Chief Operating Officer John Hancock commented: “You cannot rebuild Britain’s homes without rebuilding its workforce. Every early-career installer we fail to bring into the industry today is a lost opportunity to secure the future capacity the UK desperately needs.”

“Cost is only one part of the problem.

Unless we fix those (other) pain points, we will not attract or retain the volume of apprentices Britain needs.”

Trusted sales channels Telescopic ladders have become increasingly popular thanks to their compact, lightweight and adjustable design. However, a joint investigation by The Ladder Association and T&R Test Research Centre has uncovered “alarming safety failings among telescopic ladders sold in the UK,” particularly those purchased from online marketplaces supplied by unknown or third-party vendors, with many of the products tested not only failing to pass the required safety tests but also falsely claiming compliance with the current product standard.

Despite the disappointing overall results, 100% of ladders purchased directly from physical stores passed the required safety tests, proving both compliant and safe to use.

Werner telescoping ladders were among the cohort that passed and the supplier’s UK Compliance Manager Dave Elson welcomed the findings, commenting: “As the report reveals, it’s something of an unregulated ‘untamed frontier’ when it comes to online sales. Too often, people are tempted by

cheaper products that seriously compromise their safety (yet) the results clearly demonstrate that buying from trusted brands and reputable platforms can make the difference between safety and danger.”

@PBMmagazine Pillo talk W.Howard has completed a major investment and restructuring of its manufacturing facilities to prepare for the launch of its new subsidiary, W.Howard Pillo. The initiative includes the relocation of its veneered MDF profile product lines to its head office in Astley, Manchester, and the installation of new production technology designed to boost efficiency and capacity across the group.

This forms part of a wider investment programme that included the refurbishment of its site in Newtown, Wales, where Pillo’s natural wood-fibre insulation is now being manufactured. The new production line has been designed to handle recycled MDF fibres — recovered using technology licensed from Manchester-based MDF Recovery.

Prostate Cancer awareness campaign ForgeFix is reminding merchants about its recently launched partnership with Prostate Cancer UK for a year-long series of awareness building and fundraising initiatives. The distributor is delivering its ‘Screw Prostate Cancer’ campaign with an aim of getting 100,000 men to take the Prostate Cancer UK online risk checker and to raise £100,000 for the charity.

Using Spectre as the public-facing brand for the partnership, the company has created a bespoke ‘Screw Prostate Cancer’ screw case with a range of its multi-purpose screws featuring a unique QR code which end-users can scan to complete the charity’s risk checker. And every time merchants purchase the cases, ForgeFix will donate towards its £100,000 target allowing merchants to support the campaign by simply stocking the versatile range.

NTG COLLAPSE

National Timber Group enters administration In news that draws together the UK economy’s ongoing struggles, the particular challenges facing the construction industry and the recent trend of private equity money entering the merchant sector, National Timber Group has recently fallen into administration.

F

ollowing a notice of intention filed in mid-November, towards the end of the month, leading professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal was appointed as administrators to the five entities making up the National Timber Group, launching the sale of the business and its assets. Headquartered in Sheffield, NTG was the UK’s largest independent timber merchanting, distribution and processing group.

Listed in eleventh position on PBM’s most recent annual ‘Top 20’ merchant countdown (April 2025) with a turnover figure of £297.3m, the Group was created in 2018 through the acquisitions of brands including Thornbridge, NYTimber, Rembrand Timber and Arnold Laver — which could trace its origins back more than a century — with funding from Cairngorm Capital Partners. It employed c.1,150 people across 47 sites in England and Scotland.

The Group has now been placed into administration “following a difficult trading period and resultant liquidity challenges.” Unfortunately, there have been 561 immediate redundancies across the sites and central functions, and the Administrators are “supporting these employees through the redundancy process.”

At the time of writing, thirteen of the Group’s branches had been closed with immediate effect with the remaining sites continuing to operate. Additionally, some of

the company’s production facilities have been mothballed.

Michael Magnay, Gemma Quinn and Jonathan Marston of Alvarez & Marsal have been appointed as Joint Administrators, with Michael commenting: “As Joint Administrators, we have launched an accelerated sale process, and we encourage any interested parties to contact us as soon as possible. We are encouraged by the level of interest so far and we are hopeful of finding a buyer for all or parts of the group.

“Regrettably, the company’s liquidity challenges have led to a number of immediate redundancies. We are committed to supporting the affected employees through the redundancy process.”

With the timing of NTG’s collapse coming shortly before Christmas, Michael added: “We appreciate the support and patience of the highly skilled workforce in difficult circumstances, particularly at this time of year.”

Commenting on the situation, David Hopkins, Chief Executive of Timber Development UK, said: “Market conditions

are utterly brutal right now for all our members, large and small alike. Our thoughts are with the staff and teams across the National Timber Group. There is a rich history and legacy within all the brands which make up NTG, and we hope that as much of this as possible can be saved regardless of the eventual outcome.”

Reflecting on the situation for those who may have already lost their jobs or are now facing redundancy, the BMF has urged those impacted to take advantage of BMCareers, the dedicated web platform designed to connect talented professionals with new employment opportunities within the sector.

Job seekers are encouraged to regularly check the website for the current job vacancies advertised by merchants and suppliers on the site, whilst they can also submit their CVs using the ‘Upload Your Profile and Get Noticed’ feature. Once registered, profiles will be added to the secure Talent Pool, which is accessible exclusively to employers in the building materials sector, who can view CVs and make direct contact with applicants.

2026 UK MANUFACTURING INSIGHT

At a crossroads Taking a wider perspective on the broader UK manufacturing sector, Shane Taylor, Manufacturing Sales Manager at ECI Software Solutions, explores why AI, data and people power will define the year ahead.

P

ersistent cost pressures, intensifying global competition and ongoing trade complexity are testing even the most resilient businesses. At the same time, new technologies, a renewed push for industrial strategy and the drive toward net zero are creating powerful opportunities for those able to harness them.

This tension between challenge and momentum has put manufacturing on the brink of major transformation. Leaders across the sector know that standing still is no longer an option. The businesses that embrace modern technology, strengthen their data foundations and empower their people will be the ones to regain competitiveness and secure long-term growth.

AI becomes the competitive edge AI is already influencing how many UK factories operate, but adoption remains fragmented. According to Make UK, around 70% of manufacturers are investing in digital tools, yet only 10% run fully digitalised operations, and robot density in the UK still sits at about half the EU average. The result?

A sector where AI is present, but not yet fully harnessed.

In 2026, progress will be driven by manufacturers applying AI in more deliberate, operationally grounded ways.

Rather than focusing on isolated pilot projects, firms will increasingly use AI to stabilise production schedules, uncover inefficiencies earlier and create smoother links between planning, supply chain and

the shop floor. These are the areas where AI can deliver immediate value without major disruption.

For many, the aim will be simple: shift from experimenting to embedding. The manufacturers which see the greatest gains will be those who integrate AI into everyday decisions, using it to strengthen reliability, reduce friction and close the digitalisation gap that has held back the sector in the UK. Data the new driver of performance While AI attracts the headlines, it’s the strength and clarity of a manufacturer’s data that will dictate how far these tools can go because AI can only work at its best when the information behind it is accurate and connected. Make UK reports that only 54% of manufacturers use ERP or MRP systems to manage supply chains, leaving almost half reliant on ageing systems or spreadsheets to run fundamental processes. That limits accuracy, slows decisions and makes it harder to maintain consistent performance.

The priority now is consolidation. When production, stock, sales and scheduling data lives in one place and updates in real time, teams can make quicker, more confident decisions. Issues surface earlier, duplicated efforts disappear and resources can be planned with greater precision.

This shift doesn’t require cutting edge automation. Reliable insight into defects, cycle times, downtime or demand patterns is enough to materially strengthen output and stability. It’s the manufacturers that invest in these data foundations that will find it easier

to handle volatility, improve efficiency and adopt new technologies at their own pace.

Resilient, tech-enabled supply chains The UK’s global supply chain links show just how exposed manufacturers are to disruption. Around half of UK output depends on the sourcing and sale of intermediate inputs, with manufacturing in particular relying heavily on complex international networks. A significant share of this exposure is indirect — routed through partners in Europe, the US and elsewhere — which means many vulnerabilities sit several tiers back in the chain, out of immediate sight.

In 2026, the response should be less about pulling back from global supply chains and more about managing this complexity with greater intent. Manufacturers should put more focus on identifying where critical inputs really come from, mapping dependencies beyond preferred suppliers and using planning tools to test “what if?” scenarios around delays, tariffs or demand shifts.

When this is combined with clearer operational data and closer coordination between supply chain, finance and production, it becomes possible to move away from constant firefighting and towards more deliberate, resilient and profitable supply chain strategies.

Empowered people, smarter work Despite fears about automation replacing jobs, the reality across the sector is far more

MARKET MONITOR Apprenticeship reform Construction industry bodies have broadly welcomed recently announced Government reforms to the apprenticeship system with a reported £725m investment package designed to deliver “more apprenticeships for young people and help to match skills training with local job opportunities.”

T

he Government claims that its reforms and investment will “will help to tackle youth unemployment and drive economic growth, with thousands more young people expected to benefit over the next three years.” As ever, delivery will be crucial, but the pledge includes measures across the board to both boost access and create more apprenticeships and training courses.

For example, the latest funding includes £140 million for a pilot scheme where Mayors will be able to connect young people — especially those not in education, employment or training (NEET) — with “thousands of apprenticeship opportunities at local employers.” The Department of Work & Pensions notes that “by partnering with regional leaders who best understand their local economies, these pilots will ensure young people can access training that meets the needs of employers in their area.”

As part of the package, the Government will also cover “the full cost of apprenticeships for eligible young people under 25 at small and medium-sized businesses.” Removing the 5% co-investment rate for SMEs means that the training costs for all eligible under 25 apprentices are fully funded, delivering more opportunities for people at the start of their careers while “removing the burden from businesses, making it easier for them to take on young talent.”

Businesses will also benefit from “a major boost in flexibility as new short courses in cutting-edge areas — including AI, engineering and digital skills — will begin rolling out from April 2026.”

In part designed to “change the way apprenticeships are viewed and to put them on an equal footing with university,” Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden commented: “This funding is a downpayment on young people’s futures and the future of the country, creating real pathways into good jobs and providing work experience, skills training and guaranteed employment.

Boosting sustainable sales Whilst highlighting the progress that has been made, the latest BMF Sustainability Report outlines the need for greater customer engagement to maintain momentum.

T

he third annual BMF State of Sustainability research report, conducted by strategic agency CMDi, reveals that sustainability is gaining traction. For example, a growing number of merchant product ranges have Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), enabling building professionals to compare the environmental performance of different products to make more sustainable choices.

Indeed, the proportion of merchants reporting that they stock products with EPDs has doubled in the past year, rising from 3 in 10 to 6 in 10 respondents. At the same time, the number of merchants unsure whether their products carry these sustainability credentials has fallen from 5 in 10 to 3 in 10.

However, the research also highlights that the top three barriers to adopting sustainable building materials were all customer-related, with trade customers having low awareness of the need for sustainable materials, expressing scepticism about sustainability and/or being unwilling to pay more for

sustainable products.

Furthermore, half of merchants still don’t talk to customers about EPDs, and among merchants with annual turnovers below £50m, three-quarters don’t discuss EPDs with their customers. The report therefore states that the single most important action the BMF could take to accelerate the adoption of more sustainable building materials is to support smaller merchants in shifting trade customer conversations away from lowest price and towards sustainability as a core value driver.

In response, the BMF is stepping up support with practical guidance through Working Group 1, which focuses on sustainability and environmental issues.

Giles Bradford, Chair of the Working Group and Head of Sustainability at Bradfords Building Supplies, commented: “Sustainable building materials are not a niche. They are the future.

“Every merchant who avoids EPD conversations today is choosing to fall behind tomorrow.”

BMF CEO John Newcomb continued: “The BMF will continue to provide members with the tools, clarity and confidence needed to stay competitive, compliant and future-ready.”

Dianne Lucas, Managing Director of CMDi, added: “This sector has made real progress, but now we must protect it.

Sustainability cannot become optional because market conditions are tough.

Momentum is fragile and we cannot afford to lose the wins we’ve fought for.”

To date, 245 members have taken the extra step and uploaded their Employer Profile to the BMCareers website, giving them visibility to the tens of thousands of potential recruits who have visited the site since its launch earlier this year.

Until now, however, visitors have had to click through to a particular member’s website to see if they are currently recruiting. The addition of a dedicated “Search for Jobs” tab, located at the top of every page on the website, provides instant access to all current job vacancies, which can be searched by location, employer, job role, salary or keyword.

he UK roofing and construction sectors faced another challenging year in 2025, particularly across commercial and non-residential construction. Slow new project starts, higher business taxation, building regulation delays and persistent labour shortages continued to affect timelines and investment confidence across the building envelope and roofing supply chain. Multiple commercial categories, including offices, retail and industrial, saw reduced activity throughout the year as developers paused decision-making and funding constraints delayed projects.

Yet the resilience of the sector remained clear. Commercial refurbishment and maintenance continued to provide consistent opportunity, driven by ageing public and private building stock, tightening energy performance standards and increased emphasis on extending the lifespan of existing assets. Civil engineering and infrastructure output is forecast to grow strongly, with a 17% increase expected in 2026 and a further 15% in 2027, driven by greater investment in utilities, road and rail networks, renewable energy and water infrastructure.

Industrial and logistics construction is also expected to strengthen as online retailing and planning reforms create additional demand. Public sector capital spending is forecast to pick up from mid-2026, with increased investment across health and education estates.

Residential markets are projected to recover at a steady pace, with private housing starts forecast to increase by 6% in 2026 and 18% in 2027, and social housing development rising in parallel. Taken together, these trends point towards a healthier construction landscape and a more stable outlook for the roofing industry.

A specialist division of the leading independent builders’ merchant, EH Smith Architectural Solutions has opened its new Digbeth Design Centre — billed as a “first-of-its-kind destination for the architecture and construction community in the Midlands.”

A design for life H

oused in a sensitively restored 150-year-old industrial building on Bradford Street, Birmingham, the landmark centre features the largest accessible commercial brick display in Britain, and the biggest showcase of bricks in Europe. Described as a “boutique of bricks,” the facility is viewed as being a significant addition to the UK’s architectural landscape and represents EH Smith’s first city centre presence since the 1960s.

The refurbishment process, led by EH Smith, has “revealed and celebrated various layers of the building’s industrial past.” For instance, during the renovation, previously hidden structural phases and construction challenges were uncovered and resolved, “adding depth and character to the final design.”

Driving purpose The Pavestone Rally has undoubtedly established itself as the industry’s most sensational event, bringing together teams representing merchants, suppliers, trade associations and service providers for the adventure of a lifetime. The premise is notionally simple — find a cheap car, dress it up (think Thunderbird 2, or the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters!) and be ready to take on all manner of crazy challenges on a road trip across Europe, all in the name of raising a huge sum of money for some very good causes.

S

tarting from the assembly point at Dover’s ferry port, this year’s Pavestone Rally saw 38 teams converge from across the UK… all dressed up in ‘Minion’ themed outfits! To “looks of bewilderment and amazement” from the other passengers, teams wasted no time in accepting various points-scoring missions, eventually rolling off the ferry into Calais and onwards through France, Belgium and the Netherlands to the first night’s stopover and the official 2025 start line in Düsseldorf.

More fancy dress and more challenges followed the next morning, as participants (including Austin Powers and President Trump) set off for the first checkpoint in Berlin.

A photo challenge of taking a swim at the famous Little Mermaid statue on the outskirts of Copenhagen captured a number of, erm, fetching looks for posterity, as the teams headed on to the penultimate stop of Hamburg.

With the finishing line in Amsterdam, a city well known for its “colourful and vibrant” nightlife, a ‘PVC Party’ theme was deemed appropriate(!) for the last leg of the journey as the teams took the chequered flag to be greeted by representatives from the four main charities of CRASH, Variety, Teenage Cancer Trust and Lighthouse.

An evening celebration saw a host of prizes handed out, but the main headline was the total amount of money heading to charity.

Surpassing the hugely impressive £217,000 total of the prior 2023 event, the 2025 Pavestone Rally raised a truly outstanding £233,000.

CITY PLUMBING ‘DIGITAL TOOLS’ FOR INSTALLERS New research from City Plumbing has revealed that digital tools are now a standard part of how plumbing and heating engineers prepare for and manage the winter surge in boiler and heating breakdowns. Over 60% of installers say they use online platforms to identify and source boiler spares, and a further third say they are open to doing so in the future, while more than half (57%) are using digital tools to diagnose problems with boilers or other heating systems.

Part of the merchant’s Taking the Temperature report, the findings also challenge the belief that only larger firms use digital tools. The next chapter Intact’s Catherine Cane outlines the advantages of the company’s next generation GenetiQ ERP solution, exploring the decision-making process behind Coomers Timber & Building Supplies’ selection of the platform ahead of the merchant’s forthcoming 70th anniversary.

A

s Coomers Timber & Building Supplies approaches its 70th anniversary in 2026, the independent merchant is “making its boldest technology move in almost two decades,” selecting Intact’s cloud-native GenetiQ solution to power its next stage of competitive growth.

Credit checks and monitoring With a stated mission to help customers “manage and control every aspect of their business,” Border also works with leading industry partners to “offer the very best software integrations” and bespoke solutions. In addition to the likes of Prommt mentioned above, the business has just announced its new partnership with Red Flag Alert (see panel) to deliver streamlined credit checks and monitoring of existing customers, prospects and new accounts.

will be available “very soon,” with Border stating that the new solution will help “relieve the burden and stress” for merchants who are “struggling to stay on top of risks, if time carrying out credit checks and completing application forms is too heavy or you’re starting to get worried about bad debts.”

With two parts to the Red Flag offering, Stage One is customer onboarding which includes the application form completion, confirming the identity of an account applicant followed by a vigorous credit check process and fraud checks. Once completed, this data will be uploaded to the merchant’s CounterAct system.

Stage Two, meanwhile, is the use of real-time data to monitor accounts and send alerts via a visual portal regarding any shifts in credit, compliance or financial status. All alerts can be set to a merchant’s own preference, and the credit check applications can be bespoke to the organisation.

Renovation and repairs Offering insight for the sector at large, new research from City Plumbing reveals how attitudes towards bathroom renovation projects are reflecting the current cost-of-living pressures and changing lifestyles.

A

ccording to the City Plumbing research, collated in its latest Taking the Temperature report, homeowners are increasingly choosing to “make their existing homes work harder for them” with bathroom renovations reflecting both financial and functional priorities.

More than a third (35%) of plumbers and installers reported a rising demand for full bathroom renovations and new installations, while a quarter (25%) said repair work is increasing. Another 34% have seen an even split between renovation and repair.

The top driver for renovations is now said to be function, rather than style, with 42% of installers saying their customers want to adapt their bathrooms to better suit changing mobility needs or lifestyle preferences — for example, swapping a bath for a shower.

Of course, style is still important, with 30% saying customers want a more modern look, but the shift in motivations underlines a more considered approach as households

focus on creating spaces that are “functional, accessible and fit for the long term.”

Moreover, the research aligns with the wider ‘improve, not move’ trend, as 35% of installers said more homeowners are upgrading their bathrooms instead of moving house. Equally, for those who are buying new homes, 34% of professionals said that homeowners are refreshing bathrooms to make the space their own.

Repairs remain a significant choice too, “driven by both cost-of-living concerns and sustainability.” Here, more than a third (37%) of installers said their customers “choose to repair rather than replace to cut down on waste, while 35% said affordability is the key factor.”

ast summer, Frontline Bathrooms and Smiths Briten announced a “major transformation” of their UK delivery network, confirming “significant long-term investments in shared infrastructure, with a clear focus on improving speed, reliability and sustainability for builders’ merchants nationwide.” At the heart of this shift was the unification of their delivery operations, leveraging each other’s well-established logistics networks to “streamline routes, cut duplication and enhance service coverage in key postcodes across the UK.” This combined infrastructure — supported by dual head offices and round-the-clock cross-dock facilities — was said to position Frontline and Smiths Briten as a “smarter, more responsive distribution force” for the bathroom and plumbing trade while ensuring the two brands retain distinct product and service offerings to offer stockists “the best of both: consistent service and wide-ranging choice.”

The move followed on from a six-figure investment into a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software system intended to streamline business operations and make delivery into retailers more efficient, including new features such as electronic proof of delivery, better visibility of stock levels when placing an order and more efficient delivery routes for improved sustainability. On a business level meanwhile, the ERP upgrade is intended to “simplify the back-office process across both

companies, including minimising dual stocking and (a) more efficient delivery schedule into the warehouses.”

As part of a commitment to customer service, a number of new employees of have been recruited over the last 12 months, including the appointment of Hayley Simmons as Senior Marketing Consultant.

From a product perspective, Frontline Bathrooms recently announced it will “once again become the exclusive UK distribution partner” for leading bathroom furniture brand Royo, following a strategic review

by Roca. Marking the continuation of a longstanding relationship with the brand, under the new arrangement, all Royo stock will be held at Frontline while ordering will be processed through Smiths Briten.

Gareth Sterry, Business Development Manager at Frontline Bathrooms, commented: “Having all stock held at Frontline and orders processed through Smiths Briten gives us far greater control of the supply chain, which translates to faster response times, tighter stock management and more predictable service.”

In September, Smiths Briten announced it had been appointed as an additional distribution partner to Sensio, the mirrors, cabinets and lighting specialist. “The aim now is to build on this foundation in partnership with the Sensio team. That means working together on training, providing product knowledge, and ensuring that retailers have the right tools to maximise sales.”

In the run up to Christmas, for example, the Smiths Briten sales team was working closely with Sensio and its training managers on supporting new and existing customers

with product training, utilising the supplier’s training centre and show van.

Finally, in October, Smiths Briten reported it had been selected as an additional distribution partner to Aqualisa.

While the leading digital and electric showers brand’s standard lead-time is 5-7 days, the distributor promises to “deliver a faster, more agile alternative” with stock held locally and dispatched directly from its UK depots, reducing the wait time and giving retailers and merchants the flexibility to react quickly to demand.

As part of the roll-out, Aqualisa’s field teams have been collaborating with Smiths Briten’s sales organisation to support onboarding, displays and joint calls, including deploying its training van to deliver hands-on product sessions for internal teams and customer partners.

Recovery position Showersave, part of The Keystone Group, has published a new report and executive summary exploring the issue of hot water cylinder sizing for domestic heat pump systems with showers, aiming to resolve current industry confusion on the subject.

he report comes ahead of the expected publication of the Future Homes Standard (FHS), under which new-build homes will have to meet a ‘zero-carbon ready’ standard modelled on a notional air source heat pump (ASHP).

Titled, Hot water cylinder sizing for domestic heat pump systems with showers: Accounting for Waste Water Heat Recovery and Instantaneous Electric Showers, the report seeks to clarify shortcomings in existing guidance on hot water cylinder sizing.

Indeed, with heat pumps expected to play a central role in the Future Homes Standard, Showersave is urging housebuilders to consider the benefits of Waste Water Heat Recovery Systems (WWHRS) and Instantaneous Electric Showers (IES). These technologies, the business contends, can improve the performance of domestic hot water systems, reduce hot water demand and cut household electricity demand for heating.

Developed in collaboration with Chris Martin — formerly of the Energy Monitoring Company — and Triton Showers, the report explores how WWHRS and IES can reduce hot water demand, how WWHRS can lower electricity consumption by pre-heating the incoming cold water and why improved hot water cylinder-sizing models are needed to accurately reflect the impact of these technologies.

The report calls for the following actions: Industry bodies, including NHBC, MCS and CIBSE, should update their guidance to reflect WWHRS and IES. Housebuilders should consider incorporating WWHRS and IES as standard features in energy-conscious developments.

Easing the decarbonisation journey Assessing the outlook for the wider freight transport sector but with implications for the merchant industry nonetheless, a new report from Logistics UK warns that a well-considered ‘road map’ is required to successfully navigate the nation’s decarbonisation journey.

L

ow confidence across the logistics sector and insufficient support means government decarbonisation targets are at significant risk of being missed.

This stark warning is revealed in a comprehensive report from business group Logistics UK: ”Powering Change: building a credible plan for decarbonising road logistics”.

The data-led policy report draws on the expertise of the trade association’s members and wider industry and highlights the growing gap between decarbonisation targets and industry readiness — particularly from smaller operators who form the backbone of the industry.

80% of industry stakeholders who contributed to Logistics UK’s research, are not confident the phase-out dates for diesel vans and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) will be met, and the report calls for a pragmatic and cost-effective approach for logistics decarbonisation, planned through a “co-owned industry and cross-government roadmap.”

According to the research, industry’s concerns are driven by a lack of confidence that there is sufficient support for the sector to switch to Zero Emission Vehicles. For instance, over 85% of survey respondents express low confidence in the availability of suitable public charging; more than 80% disagree they can install chargers with

sufficient capacity at their operating sites; and around 60% feel there is insufficient guidance and funding.

Lamech Solomon, Head of Decarbonisation Policy at Logistics UK, said: “The date to end the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles is now less than 10 years away for the lightest road freight vehicles, and under 15 for the heaviest. Road logistics stands at a critical juncture on the pathway to decarbonisation.

“The urgent need to reduce emissions and address climate change is not in question: the sector is committed to decarbonising and across the sector we see investment in infrastructure, adoption of battery electric vehicles, large-scale trials of battery HGVs and greater use of low carbon fuel. Yet there is no avoiding the reality that operators consider the current technology and policy landscape confusing and fragmented.”

The report highlights the resilience and determination of the industry to meet the need for low-emission logistics: diesel use is predicted to drop to 50% by 2030 from current use of 80% through increased use of low carbon fuel, as well as a rise in battery electric vehicles.

million Heavy Goods Vehicles operate on UK roads, delivering essential goods for consumers and businesses across the UK and beyond. Road freight and its associated activities account for 18.4% of the £170 billion the logistics sector contributes each year to the UK economy, and 80% of UK freight travels on roads at some point on its journey to the end user.

“Electrification will be central to decarbonising road freight but for an industry that operates on slim margins, the cost of the transition is currently considered prohibitive. We all have an incentive for the transition to be delivered economically: logistics costs are embedded in all products so how much it costs for the sector to decarbonise, and how it affects supply chains, will impact us all.”

In addition to presenting the current state of readiness, Logistics UK’s report also sets out a number of the key enablers required to deliver a cost-effective, resilient and inclusive pathway to logistics decarbonisation, for example, identifying government policy mechanisms, targeted financial support for operators and scaling up the use of low carbon fuel.

■ Preventative maintenance is not only considered a legal expectation by the DVSA, but new research from business group Logistics UK’s Vehicle Inspection Service shows it can be a money saver as well.

Through its Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Logistics UK conducts tens of thousands of inspections every year across HGVs, PSVs, LCVs and other specialist equipment making the organisation the largest national supplier of vehicle inspection services. Analysing over 40,000 vehicle inspections carried out between April 2024 and March 2025, experts from VIS calculated that each inspection where at least one defect is identified, regardless of the severity, saves the operator on average £545 per vehicle in unplanned repairs and downtime.

Furthermore, the business group’s analysis shows almost 60% of HGVs inspections identify at least one defect per vehicle, highlighting just how common these savings could be.

Chris Lipscomb, Director of Operations at Logistics UK, explained: “Defects identified during an inspection can range from blown bulbs to more serious steering and braking defects, but they all have the potential to cause disruption if they need to be remedied when a vehicle should be operational. Operators are aware of their legal responsibilities regarding preventative maintenance, but the potential savings our research identifies show there is a financial business case for operating safe and roadworthy vehicles, alongside the operator’s legal and moral duty.”

uilders’ merchants stand at a pivotal moment in their evolution, where they must adapt to new demands and delivery expectations, or risk falling behind. Highlighting the industry’s required structural change is the BMF’s recent Branch of the Future report, written by Steve Collinge and co-sponsored by L.E.K. Consulting.

Paraphrased, it explains that customer expectations are now being reshaped by the speed, visibility and convenience of modern ecommerce as a traditional branch-led, relationship-driven model is being updated with an Amazon-style customer experience that is digital, transparent and on-demand.

For many merchants across the UK, this represents a challenge to adapt and incorporate new ways of taking orders, communicating with customers, executing deliveries and managing proof of delivery.

A shift in buying power The BMF’s research is quick to point out that there is a new shift in power dynamics — increasingly driven by buyers. In the past, suppliers would decide which retailers and merchants would stock their products. They drove the market and would stipulate when orders for goods would arrive.

Thanks to ecommerce and the shopping experiences we’ve all come to appreciate, this

is changing. Tradespeople are now in the driver’s seat. They have more options available, meaning they can pick and choose where to buy, specifying when and where they want materials delivered.

The report points out distinct buying requirements between generations, noting that ‘older tradespeople’, defined as Boomers (1946 – 1964) and Generation X (1965 – 1980), expect to visit a merchant to pick up goods. In comparison, ‘younger tradespeople’ often prefer a ‘Click and Collect’ or an ecommerce-like delivery experience.

It is essential for merchants to acknowledge these differences in their customers’ buying needs if they are to serve both loyal older tradespeople and foster sales

with younger clients.

For instance, the BMF says the average typical builders’ merchant customer is 53 years old. Older tradespeople typically stick to well-known brands and have their preferred trusted suppliers, who they’ve used for many years. They value relationships with in-store staff and reps for quotes and advice.

They are likely to buy in bulk, stockpile materials, and depend on traditional invoicing and paperwork. Given their years of experience, they tend to understand long-term pricing trends — and expect trade discounts based on loyalty and bulk buying.

They prefer traditional credit with merchants and tend to be more patient, and unlikely to try fast delivery choices.

Younger expectations Younger tradespeople have a different approach to buying. They, too, value in-store relationships, but are more influenced by online reviews and recommendations and are more open-minded to trying new brands, based on good reviews and pricing.

They are more likely to buy online, frequently, and make use of ‘just-in-time’ delivery instead of stockpiling.

Indeed, younger tradespeople expect — and will test — fast service, next-day or same-day delivery (including click & collect). Although they will also buy in-branch, they are less likely to visit as often. They understand lead times and are less patient with delays and mistakes generally.

Futureproofing Convenience, personalisation and sustainability are some of the key factors that the branch of the future must consider. The in-store proposition remains key, with brands encouraged to create communities/hubs for exclusive demos or as meeting places for peers.

But with the importance of offering a digital / ecommerce purchasing and delivery experience via apps, web, phone or in branches, all these systems must be linked in addition to supporting access to current stock data, pricing and delivery capability.

Sustainability is increasing in importance, too. Branches are evaluating how to become more energy efficient but one area that is ripe for improvement is across merchants’ fleets of last-mile delivery vehicles. It’s one thing to offer convenience to today’s modern customer, but, how ‘green’ are deliveries?

How can merchants reduce mileage on deliveries, keeping costs and CO2 emissions down while meeting customer need for convenience?

Optimising vehicle fleets Today, routing and telematics tools enable merchants to optimise the use of their vehicle fleets. This includes using AI-enhanced algorithms to support planning teams with what orders to pack into vehicles to meet the urgent delivery requirements of tradespeople.

Safety will remain the top priority for businesses operating material handling equipment in 2026. According to the British Safety Council around 1,300 people a year are involved in forklift related accidents.

Several are fatal. Failure to maintain a safe working environment can have dire legal consequences for a business and its directors, so getting the best value from a truck in terms of safety is essential.

Ensuring that trucks are correctly specified for the task and equipped with critical safety equipment will be of primary concern. Sealed disc brakes, automatic parking brakes, speed limiters, anti-collision devices, flashing beacons, reversing alarms and ‘pedestrian awareness’ projected blue light systems are all now commonly fitted as a matter of course. This is set to develop further in 2026 with the introduction of further advanced safety features from a number of OEMs. Vehicle design and safety features go hand-in-hand, but options vary significantly across makes. Sustainability is now a major agent of change, and 2026 will see a continuation of a major shift to electric forklift trucks. The long established 60-40 market split between IC and Electric counterbalance forklift trucks, once in favour of diesel, is now seeing a dramatic shift — and it’s set to continue apace in 2026.

Electric models are fast becoming the preferred choice as purchasers seek to improve their environmental performance in the wake of societal demands for sustainability and tightening EU regulations on carbon, nitrogen oxide and particle emissions.

Hot property PBM looks across the channel and into Europe, as German builders’ merchant Henri Benthack invests in durable hot-rolled steel profiles for the cantilever and pallet racking its recently-opened site in Neumünster to the north of Hamburg.

W

hen equipping its new site in Neumünster, trade building materials supplier Henri Benthack — which operates from six depots across four states in northern Germany — deliberately opted for cantilever and pallet racking made from hot-rolled steel profiles.

Compared to shelving made from cold-rolled sheet metal profiles, they are said to support “significantly higher load-bearing capacities and allow larger spans” whilst also being more resistant to any on-site impacts.

All the shelving required for the location was supplied by OHRA, from cantilever and pallet racking for indoor and outdoor installation to special long-span and vertical racking for the storage and presentation of mouldings.

The business moved into its new branch in Neumünster in mid-2024 after the space at the old location was no longer sufficient for its extensive product range. The company can now offer customers a significantly expanded portfolio in the more than 25,000 square metres of storage space, with a broad range comprising around 8,500 products including drainage, floor coverings, landscaping products and roofing materials.

metal profiles, the company opted for systems from OHRA. The company is one of the European market leaders in heavy-duty shelving and only uses full-walled, hot-rolled steel profiles for its cantilever and pallet racking.

This enables high load-bearing capacities with a slimline design. At Benthack, for example, the 7-metre-high pallet racking can carry a shelf load of up to 3.9 tonnes — with a shelf width of 3 metres.

OHRA states that hot-rolled profiles also offer significant advantages in terms of safety — with sheet metal profiles, a bump from a forklift truck can quickly damage a support or beam to such an extent that the component has to be replaced, or that it fails without warning.

Hot-rolled steel, meanwhile, is tough and durable due to the manufacturing process.

As a result, its kink resistance is significantly higher and its sensitivity to impacts considerably lower. In the event of a collision, the manufacturer contends, hot-rolled profiles deform but retain their static properties (up to a certain extent).

The pallet racks, most of which are designed as double rack rows, offer a total of around 3,400 storage locations. The length of the cantilever racking storage levels adds up

to over 1,250 metres, arranged in six storage levels. All racks for outdoor use are hot-dip galvanised, whilst some of the cantilever racks are also fitted with a roof.

The height and usable depth of the vertical shelves have been adapted to Benthack’s portfolio, allowing the merchant to present the various dimensions and versions of its products in a customer-friendly way.

Additionally, in order to maintain an overview of the large number of shelves, OHRA provided Benthack with a visualisation of the entire system for internal planning.

Thanks to this comprehensive pre-planning, it was possible to develop a “clearly structured facility” in a timely manner that offers not only more storage capacity compared to the old location but also a more efficient and durable solution that enables fast order picking and enhanced protection from damage.

Let the crane take the strain Among the latest fleet and handling innovations to make their debut at last year’s Road Transport Expo, Hiab unveiled a new series of Merchant Cranes featuring a choice of specifications to meet the precise needs of customers in a clearer and more efficient way.

illed as the UK’s premier trade show for the road haulage industry, RTX 2025 featured some 300+ exhibitors on site at NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, enabling visitors to discover the latest in cutting-edge, products, services and solutions for their fleet requirements. And in addition to showcasing the new DEL Tail Lift alongside the MULTILIFT Futura 12, Hiab drew back the curtain on its “groundbreaking” range of Merchant Cranes.

THE POINT OF MO RETURN! Well, we talked about it a couple of months ago (PBM November), but it sadly looks like we have hit the point of no return with Mo Salah at Liverpool. Having been dropped for a couple of games and not making it off the bench as the reigning champs stuttered to a 3-3 draw with Leeds at Elland Road, the four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner launched what was widely reported as a ‘scathing attack’ on the club and manager Arne Slot from a rare foray into the post-game mixed zone.

To add a degree of balance, there was a little more nuance in what Salah actually said than most of the coverage suggested, but only a little… Whether he’s trying to force Slot out or now angling for a big money move to the Saudi league is up for debate, but Mo is clearly no fool.

Obviously, he has an ego and huge belief in his talent. As he said himself, his achievements for the club are beyond doubt.

Has he been “thrown under the bus” as the scapegoat for the team’s wider failings over the last few months? That’s a bit more

complicated…

Blistering start to the season notwithstanding, this is a very different Liverpool to that of the previous campaign. Tragedy, transfers (in and out) and injuries have necessitated a new approach, and clearly the adjustment has been way more difficult than anyone could have predicted.

Alexander Isak is still some way from being fit and firing after his extended summer holiday, whilst the failure to land Marc Guehi means that Van Dijk and Konate can’t really be left out, despite being a huge part of the problem.

Are the club now looking to cash in to plug the obvious gaps in January, needing fresh funds having spent so much in the summer? Possibly.

What is certain is that if Mo Salah doesn’t return to Liverpool after his African Cup of Nations endeavours, it will be an incredibly sad end to the Premier League career of one of the true greats of recent years. And a stone-cold FPL legend.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

A journey not for the faint of heart…

We should have snuck this story in last month, but hats off to the 185 Truro City fans who made the reported 914-mile round trip to watch The Tinners face off against Gateshead in the National League at the end of October. The longest journey in English league football history, the Cornish side let a two-goal lead slip but managed to hold on for a point in what is turning out to be a testing first season out of the regional divisions of non-league.

A few weeks on and the side are coming adrift a little at the bottom of the table. Personally, I’m hoping they can pull off a bit of a miracle and stay up in what is always a tough league. The club’s relatively isolation (it’s closest match this year is against Yeovil, around a mere 137

miles away…) has consistently thwarted long-standing ambitions to rise up the pyramid and contributed to various

financial troubles in recent years, but the effort deserves to be rewarded.
