Before Christmas – just beating the deadline for the final edition of 2025 – the chancellor revealed her Autumn Budget. Whether it was the radical Budget some expected, that’s not for me to say, but there was plenty of reaction from industry leaders and spokespeople.

Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation Chief Executive, Mark Field, was swift to respond, claiming the Autumn Budget “does nothing to support” businesses in the sector. He criticised Rachel Reeves for treating the aftermarket as an “afterthought” and challenged what he called the “short-term thinking” of successive governments, which have provided £4 billion worth of grants to encourage the sale of EVs that “not everybody wants or can afford”.

Mark continued: “Even more remarkable is this government’s plan to charge the ones that do, with a pay-per-mile tax on EVs (3p for EVs and 1.5p for hybrids). This will further reduce EV adoption. Instead of dumbing down EV adoption by subsidising the price of cars, we should be supporting businesses and programmes that deliver on the sensible notion that a technologyneutral approach to future mobility is the best way to ensure effective consumer choice and affordable motoring.”

GSF CEO, Steve Horne, also weighed in, describing the introduction of a mileage-based tax for EVs as a “pivotal moment” and predicted that vehicles with an internal combustion engine “will remain on the road longer” as a result. From April 2028, EV motorists will pay around half the fuel duty rate paid by petrol drivers, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Steve believes the measure will create “sustained demand for traditional parts and maintenance” and pledged that GSF will continue to support both existing and emerging technologies through parts, consumables, equipment, training and business support.

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) also reviewed the Autumn Budget. While it welcomed the chancellor’s decision to fully fund apprenticeships for under-25s in small and medium-sized enterprises, the association said the remaining measures offered “limited reassurance” for independent garages. Rising costs, tightening margins and increasing regulatory complexity remain pressing concerns, yet the IGA believes the Budget provides little relief.

Questions also persist around EV policy, the IGA argued, calling the message “mixed”. While the government has committed further investment to support EV infrastructure and adoption, the IGA is concerned that the introduction of EV pay-per-mile taxation represents a “clear setback”, one that undermines consumer confidence and creates additional uncertainty for businesses preparing for an electric future.

While the IGA also believes the rise in National Living Wage to £12.71 per hour may not “directly affect” every independent workshop, it thinks it will have a knock-on effect across staffing costs, supply chains and associated costs, heaping more pressure on businesses already struggling.

LKQ UK AND IRELAND URGES SERMI ADOPTION TO SAFEGUARD DATA ACCESS LKQ UK and Ireland has welcomed the launch of SERMI (SecurityRelated Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information) in Great Britain, reiterating calls for closer alignment with the EU and Northern Ireland to ensure fair access for independent garages.

SERMI provides a secure way for technicians to access the vehicle data they need from OEMs to deliver security-related repairs, including key programming and anti-theft system maintenance.

Already mandatory across the EU and Northern Ireland, the framework is designed to protect motorists’ data while allowing independent garages to keep more jobs in-house. And with participation in Great Britain currently voluntary, LKQ UK and Ireland is urging VMs to adopt the scheme.

LKQ UK and Ireland Chief Executive, Kevan Wooden, said: “Independent garages play a vital role in keeping the UK on the road. To stay competitive, they must have secure and fair access to the same information and

systems as franchised workshops. SERMI provides a clear and proven framework to achieve that.

“OEMs are already legally required to implement SERMI across the EU and Northern Ireland. And participating voluntarily in Great Britain, by extending existing systems in place elsewhere, would signal openness and fairness from automakers to the aftermarket and its customers.

“I recently received from the Right Hon Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for Future of Roads, confirmation that while the government doesn’t currently intend to mandate SERMI in Great Britain – unlike Europe and Northern Ireland – it does expect every vehicle manufacturer to give access to repair.

This is great clarity for us to have, and we’re committed to encouraging adoption of SERMI alongside our partners within the current nonmandated basis.”

LKQ UK and Ireland is also working alongside industry bodies to call for alignment.

Kevan added: “I also had the privilege of talking to the IAAF, IGA and SMMT together, as our major supporters of the independent aftermarket. We all believe it makes sense to have as much alignment as possible across Europe and for the GB SERMI scheme to have support.

“Having one common standard for protecting vehicle security reduces administration for everyone and creates improved protection and service to the consumer, manufacturer, and garage alike.”

GSF RELOCATES SLOUGH BRANCH – 12 BRANCHES OPENED IN 2025 GSF Car Parts completed its 2025 expansion by relocating its branch in Slough to a larger premises. e branch remains on the Slough Trading Estate, but has been upgraded to a larger, 5,966sq facility. An additional three full-time employees and two vans are now operating from the site.

GSF Slough Branch Manager, Conor Paterson, said: “We identified a strategic opportunity to enhance the support we give our customers in Slough. It shows that GSF is committed to investing in its plans and people, and we now look ahead to 2026 with a stronger team and enhanced ability to serve our customers.”

GSF added 12 new branches to its network last year, including the opening

of the motor factor’s 200th branch in July.

This includes four satellite sites located near existing branches to support regional growth.

GSF CEO, Steve Horne, said: “is new facility rounds off an incredible year of expansion. Slough is an area where we’ve been able to rapidly expand our customer base, and this new branch gives the team more headroom to grow further. As for what’s next, 2026 will be a similar story of

increasing branch and headcount numbers as we continue to work our way to become the number one in the aermarket.”

ECOBAT BATTERY RELAUNCHES AS VELORIS Following its sale from the Ecobat Group and a “comprehensive review” of its position and value to the market, the independent battery distributor has rebranded to Veloris.

In a statement, Veloris CEO Russell McBurnie said: “After separating from an industrial group, we are now free to pursue our own priorities, and by regaining our independence, we are reenergised and able to use the skill, knowledge and experience embedded in the business, to drive growth and fulfil our potential.”

Russell insisted that while the name is new, Veloris’ commitment to delivering exceptional services and adding value to its customers remained the same. He added that these strengths can be capitalised on and combined with its depth and versatility of stock, as well as European infrastructure, Veloris has the “ingredients and

ambition” to bolster its reputation as a reliable partner.

He continued: “As battery technology has developed and the legal requirements have increased and become more complex, it is now more important than ever to have a

battery supply partner that understands the details, whatever the sector. This is an added value service that we have always provided because our philosophy is, and will remain, to help our customers grow their battery business.”

BEN LAUNCHES NEW MEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING On International Men’s Day, Ben launched its new Men’s Health Awareness training, providing employees across the automotive industry with a better understanding of the health challenges that affect men’s physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing.

In the UK, one in five men die before reaching 65 and, with over 82% of the automotive workforce made up of men, Ben shone a light on men’s health to start supportive conversations. is training has been created to increase awareness about men’s health and wellbeing across the industry. e course is suitable for anyone who works in the automotive industry, including people managers and all genders.

IAAF LOOKS TO FORGE A ‘NEW AFTERMARKET’ The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) annual conference, once again taking place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Milton Keynes on 4 December, signalled the end of another busy 12 months in the trade. This year, IAAF looked to the future – focusing on how the sector can adapt to cultural, economic and behavioural shifts.

ormer rally driver and television presenter, Penny Mallory, began proceedings with a speech about the importance of mental toughness. She took the audience on a trip down memory lane, explaining how mental resilience shaped her career, challenges and successes.

Penny was the first woman to compete in a World Rally Car for Ford in the World Rally Championship after becoming a national rally champion. She became “obsessed” with human performance, specifically mental toughness.

Addressing the audience, Penny spoke about how she overcame the stigma that came from being a “woman in a man’s world”.

She said: “I was in my world, so I didn’t feel like I could give a sensible answer (to a journalist’s question about competing against men). I just wanted to compete – it wasn’t about gender – and my attitude, my approach was most important.”

Penny claimed that 70% of achievement is down to mental toughness – the other 30% is skill, talent or intelligence: “It’s what makes the difference to success.” Bringing it back to the challenges the automotive aftermarket may face, Penny was adamant that it is “the hard stuff that creates us” and “our mental responses to situations that are fundamentally important to life”.

Penny split mental toughness into four sections: control, confidence, challenge and commitment, and revealed personal battles that drove her from despair to realising a dream.

Struggling to cope with her mother’s alcoholism and manic depression, Penny’s behaviour and schoolwork deteriorated; nudging into adolescence, bad behaviour turned into crime and drinking. At 14 she received a letter from her estranged father that worsened things; she lived in hostels in London and her boyfriend was a heroin addict – she hit “rock bottom”.

She continued: “I had to decide (what I was going to do with my life) – good or bad – and I decided to follow my dream and put myself into rally school. It changed my life entirely. I went from roughest to toughest. I was intensely driven to become a champion. Nothing was going to stand in my way… Adversity proved useful; it built my focus, resilience and confidence.”

IMPACT OF JLR CYBER-ATTACK Inevitably, the impact – and recovery – of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) cyber-attack was brought to the attention of conference in the next discussion. David Bailey, professor of business economics at Birmingham Business School, delivered the headlines: JLR reported pre-tax losses of about £485 million in the three months to 30 September 2025 after production was shut for much of September. That represented a sharp reversal from a profit in the same period a year earlier.

David also highlighted the wider economic ripple effects, citing independent assessments that put the broader UK economic hit into the region of £1.9 billion, reflecting supplier disruption and knock-on supply-chain losses. Estimates for weekly losses during the shutdown vary, but the centrepiece figure for company pre-tax losses is the quarterly number above.

US, CHINA AND EU IMPACTS David lamented the impact of international trade frictions and rising costs on the UK sector. He pointed to a UK-US trade arrangement in 2025 that reduced certain US tariffs on UK cars from 27.5% to 10% – but only on the first 100,000 UK-made cars exported to the US. David also emphasised that Brexit-related frictions and energy costs that are constraining competitiveness: the UK continues to face higher industrial energy prices than some European peers, and inflationary pressures remain a drag on growth. While the government is looking at introducing the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme from 2027 to ease energy pressure for over 7,000 electricityintensive businesses, not households, David said this “wasn’t ambitious enough”.

Meanwhile, David claimed China remains a dominant force in EV manufacturing and battery supply, arguing that the UK must attract large-scale investment in vehicle and battery production to strengthen domestic industry.

SMMT forecasts indicated that the UK new-car market would grow to around 2.01 million units in 2025. If realised, this would mark the first time registrations exceeded two million since 2019. Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations were also expected to continue increasing their share of the market, with the SMMT anticipating a material rise.

David emphasised that BEV adoption remains constrained by high upfront costs and a “patchy” charging infrastructure; however, he noted that battery prices continue to trend downwards. Industry trackers, such as BloombergNEF and Penny Mallory other analysts, report steady declines in lithium-ion battery pack costs, with the widely cited industry “tipping point” at around $100 per kWh, at which many expect cost parity with petrol vehicles to be achievable.

Concluding his presentation, David said China is “way out in front”. Where it was once mainly a producer of lower-cost models it now leads in battery production and EV scale – and he argued the onus is on the UK to improve investment, scale and local industry to avoid falling behind.

EMERGING MODELS AND FLEET WORK Before lunch, Max Wegner of Roland Berger deep-dived into emerging aftermarket business models, sharing data that show consolidation trends and changing routes to market, while Tim Guidotti of Ferdotti Motor Services highlighted the growing importance of fleet work across cars, vans and commercial vehicles.

BRANDING GEN Z Emerging from the break, Mickey Wilson from Firestarter tackled Gen Z — how businesses should attract them as both consumers and professionals. With five different generations in the workforce, understanding how to communicate across diverse expectations has never been more crucial.

Mickey argued that flexible subscription models are likely to increase, communication will get faster, and AI will become more influential – so staying ahead technologically while maintaining strong customer engagement is essential.

During Mickey’s presentation, she shared a piece of research to help answer the question: When it comes to cars, what do Gen Z really want?

Deloitte’s Global Automotive Consumer Study shows that younger consumers (18– 34) are more open to car-subscription models, with around 28% expressing interest. Autotrader research also suggests that many younger drivers prioritise in-car technology over aesthetics, with roughly 63% of 17–25-year-olds ranking technology above appearance. Together, these trends point to a shift in product development and marketing priorities for businesses.

ENTERING THE GARAGE DEN… To end this year’s proceedings, IAAF introduced a new concept – designed to bring suppliers and independent workshops closer together – dubbed The Garage Den. Five workshop owners acted as ‘dragons’ with representatives from Milwaukee, TechMan, HELLA, WAI and Cataclean delivering product pitches.

Tough – arguably brutal – questions followed, but pitchers stayed cool under pressure. Whether the concept was a success is for the brands involved to judge – but dragons appeared to enjoy putting the suppliers under the spotlight!

As the delegates filed out, there was plenty to ponder before dinner and awards – ideas that could be applied to day-to-day business in the weeks and months ahead.

Ultimately, the IAAF conference is designed to inform, challenge and inspire, so those that attend are better prepared for whatever the future holds.

PMF introduces this month’s movers and shakers as they begin a new stage of their career in the UK aftermarket.

Prior to Ecobat Battery’s transformation to Veloris, Martin McGreevy rejoined the battery distributor on the eve of its new phase as head of national accounts.

Martin returned from GSF, where he added to his aftermarket experience following a five-year tenure. He has operated within both the distribution and product supplier sections of the trade.

Veloris Managing Director, Kevin Wood, said: “As Ecobat Battery embarked on the latest leg of its journey, it was very important to have a head of national accounts in place to help us navigate the course and maximise the opportunities, and we could do no better than have Martin in the chair.

“Not only does Martin know the battery sector, understand the business, and the team within, but he also has enormous experience as both a buyer and a seller within the industry. In addition, (because he is) such a people person, he also has great relationships throughout the aftermarket.”

LKQ SYNETIQ LKQ SYNETIQ has appointed Annick Jourdenais as its new managing director to help “lead the business’ mission of increasing access to sustainable, affordable mobility”.

Annick steps into the role at the joint venture from her previous position at LKQ Euro Car Parts. She brings more than 12 years of automotive aftermarket experience to the position, to support LKQ SYNETIQ in scaling the delivery of recycled OE car parts to workshops, bodyshops and insurers.

Alongside her new responsibilities, she will continue her European remit as senior project director for the salvage channel at LKQ Europe.

Annick said: “The automotive repair industry stands at a critical juncture. We need to make vehicle repair more sustainable, more efficient and more affordable while managing the complexity of EVs and rising regulatory requirements.

CAR SPARES FACTORS Car Spares Factors has promoted Hakan Inal to branch manager of the Welwyn Garden City store. Hakan brings “extensive industry experience, proven leadership and a clear vision for growth” to his new role.

Hakan, who has worked in the motor factors industry since the age of 16, said he was enthusiastic about this next step in his career: “Being recognised for my hard work and having the directors place their trust in me feels really good. Beginning his journey as a warehouse apprentice through a YTS scheme, Hakan has worked his way up through multiple roles in the sector, developing an understanding of operations and customer service. oes the industry do a good enough job of being positive about itself? I think we often undersell what we do. The loudest voices can be the ones listing problems and we have negative press, which needs to be halted. I will be a little controversial and say that much of the noise comes from people who have been in the trade a long time and have found change uncomfortable. Not everyone, of course, but if I had to generalise that is the pattern I see. The truth is there has never been a better time to be involved.

We are surrounded by technology that makes work smarter. Cars change fast; diagnostics, connected services and sensible uses of AI are already making jobs cleaner, faster and more satisfying. Pay is rising for capable people and career paths are clearer. Most exciting of all, there is a fresh wave of young people who want in. I have seen that first-hand and it should lift all of us.

Independent garages are doing brilliant things in every county. The missing piece is that we don’t always tell everyone. At Oldfields Garage we have pushed hard on that, working with a communications company. In 2025 I visited a school and presented the trade to 100 students. We opened our doors to the public and offered work experience to those interested in seeing what our world looks like.

Most importantly we have used local and national press to share what we are doing. That builds awareness and trust. It also makes the team feel proud of their work.

This is the playbook the industry should adopt. Plan for PR, partnerships and community presence. Celebrate technicians who learn new skills. Put apprentices and service advisors forward for awards. Show the public that modern garages are clean, professional and put people first. Share proper stories with photos and names.

Invite schools in. Go to them if they cannot come to you.

The automotive aftermarket is a family. We should welcome more people into that family to work in it, to trust it and to value it. Start 2026 by being vocal about what is good. If we keep telling the story with energy and honesty, more customers will support us, and more talent will join us. That is how positivity pays.

t’s no secret the automotive aftermarket industry finds itself frequently spotlighted for its challenges; from supply chain disruptions, pricing wars to increasing competition and evolving technology demands.

While these hurdles are very real, it’s equally important to shine a light on the strengths and successes that define this vibrant sector.

The question we need to ask is: does the industry do enough to promote a positive narrative about itself?

HOW A DIAGRAM CAN HELP YOU GET ON TOP OF DATA PROTECTION This month, Mandy Huntley, PMF’s data protection expert, looks at processes which can cause you issues as a busy motor factor, such as warranty returns where data is changing hands and needs to be secured, but the process needs to be streamlined to ensure maximum efficiency.

T

his is often where poor habits creep in as it can involve multiple systems, sometimes manual moving of data between them, and there’s scope for errors or lapses in security.

Last month I gave you my five top tips for data protection. One of those was “show your working”. When assessing the security and efficiency of a process, I like to start with a blank piece of paper – the bigger the better! I draw out the process in its simplest form. For you to do the same, you could ask yourself the following questions: 씮 Where does the data come from? 씮 What do I do with the data as soon as I receive it? 씮 Who can gain access to the data? 씮 Do I pass the data on to any other organisation? If so, how? 씮 Where do I store the data? 씮 How long do I need to keep the data for? 씮 What happens when I don’t need the data anymore?

Drawing this out as a flow chart is a good starting point, then you can go back to the beginning and start adding information. Ask yourself these questions to help: 씮 How do we tell people what information we collect, hold and use? 씮 Do we need every piece of information? 씮 How do we protect data at every step of the process? 씮 What do we know about the companies who provide the systems we use? 씮 What’s the lawful basis for collecting, using or holding data?

These follow-on questions can lead you down metaphorical rabbit holes.

question right now. This can be a large piece of work if you’ve never done anything like it before or if the process is particularly complicated. I often do this for very complex processes where highly sensitive data changes hands several times.

I firmly believe that your approach to data protection should be proportionate, and this means that you don’t need to scrutinise every detail as you would if you were dealing with sensitive health information, for example, but you do need to assure yourself that every system you use for personal data and every process in place is fit for purpose as it doesn’t introduce unnecessary risks for the people whose data you hold or your business.

Mapping out a process will allow you to identify the unanswered

questions. Make a list of these questions, and if you have a lot, prioritise finding the

answers; for example, if you have software which was in place when you bought the business and you really don’t know much about it, prioritise that. A really good place to start is with your contract with that supplier. It should tell you whether the supplier is able to access the data held within the system and the process you need to follow should something go wrong.

The supplier should be able to tell you the steps they take to ensure that data can’t be lost or inadvertently changed when they make upgrades to the system. Your IT supplier may be able to help with this or a data protection professional will be able to facilitate the conversations and get you the assurance that you need.

You might not like some of the answers you get; if so, you need to consider whether you’re willing and able to accept the risk or whether something needs to change.

If you can look at a process and remove even one single email from it, that’s one less step to take and less information flying around on email, one less chance to lose the data.

DATA PROTECTION

WHY IS ALL THIS IMPORTANT? Even with extensive planning and protections in place, things can still go wrong. People will still leave a piece of paper lying around, send an email to the wrong person or mistype something in a system. If this happens, you may need to tell the people affected. In some cases, you may need to report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office and potentially even the police. Done well, the process map that I’ve walked you through demonstrates that you’ve considered every step of the process and taken action to gain assurance or make changes where you need to.

Last year brought developments for the trade, from the future of the internal combustion engine to intensifying technological complexity. For the emissions aftermarket, these changes carry particular weight. European Exhaust and Emissions Commercial Director, Paul Newby, assesses where the sector stands and what lies ahead.

s it me, or does each year seem to fly by faster and faster? It doesn’t seem a year ago since I last sat down in a quiet room forlornly attempting to write something of interest from what is arguably a rather dry subject matter for most.

Looking back to last year, those of you with the fortitude to have trudged through the opening paragraphs of last year’s unending monologue would have been met with narrative about the government pulling forward the race to Net Zero along with phasing out the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2030. I wonder how that is panning out…

To us, this subject is of paramount importance. Unlike many other automotive component sectors, such as braking, rotational products etc, our business in its current form is largely dependent on the existence of the internal combustion engine, so please forgive me if I focus the remainder of this article around that and the wider emission market theme.

Nevertheless, our direction in 2026 may be of interest to our customers and most likely, our competitors… hello guys!

There has been a shift in the European narrative around the future of the internal combustion engine, led largely by

Germany, as the rapid influx of competitively priced EVs of high quality has sharpened the competitive landscape. In a strange juxtaposition, we find ourselves in a similar predicament to the gargantuan VMs whereby we stand at a critical juncture, caught between the current (pardon the pun) inexorable push towards electrification and the practicalities of industry and infrastructure.

At the time of writing in December 2025, all indications are that the internal combustion engine – and, therefore, manufacturers and the supply chain – may be given a reprieve until at least 2040. I’m confident VMs across Europe would breathe a sigh of relief, while us mere mortals within the realm of the automotive aftermarket would also be thankful – a choice that would provide us with additional lifeblood and longevity. The path ahead, though, would be as challenging as before.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES? One of the most significant challenges is the increasing complexity of OE products we’re required to reverse engineer to keep our product portfolio current and relevant.

The days of a simple assembly of an inlet pipe, catalyst and outlet pipe are long gone. Today, systems are becoming exceptionally complex with separate pollution control devices dedicated to a specific function, intricate internal designs that manipulate gas flow that must be replicated precisely, intricate presswork, bespoke cross-sectional shapes and advanced sensor integration to name but a few special characteristics that cannot be deviated from without compromise.

This leads to an important realisation: meeting the needs of the entire aftermarket may be difficult for any single

manufacturer to achieve alone, given the breadth of product technologies and certification requirements involved.

Of course, obstacles in life are often numerous, and can arise from various sources; some of which are within one’s control, yet others are not. A clever chap infinitely more intelligent than I once said: “The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, but the realist adjusts the sails.” That’s exactly the ethos we have while facing such challenges.

Last year proved to be a pivotal year for us; much energy was applied to bolstering our supply chains, development stratagems and strategic partnerships, ultimately enabling us to bring a record number of new parts to range, many of which are currently unavailable anywhere else in the aftermarket.

Naturally, the challenges listed thus far are generally within our own control and to that end, we are the masters of our own destiny, success or demise; however, there remains the unforeseen challenges over which we have no control: the world is in an increasingly unpredictable state, and we’re all suffering the consequences of increases in the costs of food, energy, fuels and commodities both personally and professionally.

With each new generation, pollution control devices contain increasing amounts of active materials both PGM (Platinum Group Metals) and non-PGM. Platinum, palladium and rhodium all saw strong price rallies throughout 2025, with platinum reaching levels not seen in over a decade at certain points in the year. At the same time, gold hit record highs in October 2025, contributing to heightened interest in precious metals more broadly.

Compounding the situation is the scarcity we see with some of the materials.

South Africa and Russia lead the world with PGM deposits; output in South Africa is reportedly down by 5%, while the situation in Russia remains unpredictable.

Other headwinds include the industrial energy costs that remain significantly higher in the UK than any of our European counterpart countries, a considerable amount of this cost lies with the UK’s Net Zero aspirations. Who knows, perhaps next year we can reflect upon some positive changes in that area too.

Staying with the challenges beyond our control, a special mention has to relate to the influx of product from China. If you spend as much time navigating your way through the UK traffic as I do, you may

have noticed that the car parc is changing.

Being born not too many years ago with four-star running through my veins might sound like a contradiction, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve been a selfconfessed petrol head, proud to be able to identify almost every car on the road from a young age – but today? Although I can still identify many of the more ubiquitous models, there’s an increasing number of cars and brands that I no longer immediately recognise.

I’d be fascinated to meet the marketing teams who decided that names like XPeng G6 and ORA Good Cat would resonate aspirationally – however good the cars themselves may be. And that’s the point…! We’ve recently added a Jaecoo 7 to our fleet and, despite some annoying foibles, it’s rather good; in fact, it’s been one of the UK’s bestsellers for several months, so the industry really ought to learn something from its success. For us, this model, along with all the other new marques, presents significant future opportunity.

On the flipside, we’re also seeing a rise in lower-cost pollution-control devices – cats, DPFs, SCRs and GPFs – entering the market from a range of overseas sources.

In some cases, products are listed without the necessary type-approval documentation, which raises questions about compliance and suitability for sale in the UK and Europe.

Much of this category of product is sold online, and some of it is available from UKbased sellers. Fortunately, the DVSA is responsible for policing these matters, and we work closely with them to highlight examples where appropriate. When installing any pollution-control device, technicians should ensure they purchase from reputable suppliers that provide certified products from established manufacturers.

WHAT IS PROACTIVE BATTERY MANAGEMENT? Although the name over the door now is different, Veloris – formerly known as Ecobat Battery – is confident that its level of customer service remains. To back this up, Andy Waite, product, e-commerce and marketing strategy manager at Veloris, highlights some of the key pointers that may help you manage battery stock efficiently – allowing you to make the most of market opportunities and protect your investment.

Having previously highlighted the fact that every EV also has a low voltage battery to power a multitude of its electrical systems, EVs must be considered when looking at stock profiling, particularly because 12V battery failure is one of the primary reasons that they break down.

What might also come as another surprise is that not every contemporary hybrid and EV is fitted with the latest 12V battery technology. Although it would be natural to assume that these batteries would be at a minimum AGM (absorbent glass mat), if not lithium, the truth is that there is no ‘standard’ battery for these applications, with VMs using various solutions.

The best example of this paradox is looking at models, such as the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq 5, the 2023 KIA e-Niro, the

Audi Q4 e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace, all of which use a traditional lead acid battery, whereas a Cupra Born uses an EFB (enhanced flooded battery) and a Ford Mustang Mach-E has an AGM. Even the popular pre-2022 Tesla range incorporates a 12V battery to power the vehicle’s essential low voltage systems, such as the lights, heating and touchscreen

display, as well as the door locks and alarm.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Model 3 and Model X both rely on a traditional lead acid battery (a B24 and B19 type respectively), whereas the Model S uses a U1 type AGM. Irrespective of the model, however, we include the OE fitment batteries in our range.

It is important to state that from 2022, all Tesla vehicles transferred from a 12V battery to a 16V lithium battery.

GENUINE OPPORTUNITY Although the service life of a 12V battery in an EV is not predetermined, it still has a finite lifespan and over time will degrade and fail, but evidence from

This information is valuable because despite the fact that AGM/EFB batteries generally last 30 to 50% longer than an SLI battery, any reduction in quantity of battery replacements is likely to be mitigated by their higher average price, so revenue should remain unchanged. This means that aligned with the EV 12V replacement opportunities mentioned earlier, the battery landscape continues to present a profitable outlook.

In terms of types of vehicles visiting the typical workshop, it’s the number of hybrids that is increasing – and these too all require a 12V battery; however, as is often the way, there can be a level of confusion as to what role the batteries they utilise actually play – does the battery that powers the electric motor also start the combustion engine, or is that the responsibility of the 12V battery?

Looking at three popular hybrids – the Toyota Auris, Prius and the Lexus CT200 – the 12V battery is only used for the low voltage systems – lighting, windows, central locking, alarm etc – and is either an 054 or 055 AGM auxiliary battery. As these vehicles age, the batteries are reaching their end of life, so demand for replacements is increasing.

In addition, usually in larger start/stop equipped applications, there is a growing number of vehicles now equipped with two 12V batteries – with an auxiliary battery used to complement the main battery.

Although they were initially thought to be fitted to provide back-up power to support the main battery or to support separate systems within the vehicle, our research has revealed that they often fulfil a more collaborative role in the vehicle’s power storage system.

Having a close eye on the battery market also allows us to provide you with information concerning other market developments; for example, our sales data confirms the split between traditional SLI (starter, ignition and lights) and AGM/EFB batteries, which was 64%/36% at the end of 2024 and was likely to be 50%/50% by the end of 2025. This means that keeping a close eye on the profile of stock held is increasingly important.

MAINTAINING STOCK While having the correct stock profile is vital to being able to satisfy customer demand, ensuring that each and every battery is well maintained – and in good condition when it’s supplied – is just as important.

If you supply a seriously discharged battery to a workshop, you risk them installing a unit that may leave the owner unable to start their vehicle – or worse, stranded at the roadside – damaging the reputation of both parties. In addition, the battery is likely to be returned as a warranty claim.

Although the claim would be investigated, if the issue was simply due to a neglected battery, and it was restored to good condition after a charge, the claim would almost certainly be rejected.

Furthermore, supplying a battery that is not fully charged can negatively affect checks carried out on other parts of the vehicle’s electrical system, potentially producing false readings or masking other faults.

NISSENS INTRODUCES IGNITION COIL RANGE Nissens Automotive has launched an ignition coil range, one described as a “significant, strategic expansion” that adds depth to its portfolio and, it hopes, to yours.

T

ypically, the ignition coil consists of a primary winding, secondary winding, iron core and housing, and is enclosed in a durable, heat-resistant casing filled with epoxy for insulation.

The primary winding receives lowvoltage current from the battery, which builds a magnetic field around the iron core. When the current is interrupted, the collapsing magnetic field induces a high voltage surge in the secondary winding.

This high voltage is then sent to the spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

According to Nissens, most contemporary engines utilise a coil-on-plug (COP) design where the spark plug has its own coil mounted directly on its top, eliminating the need for spark plug wires and improving ignition precision. The pencil coil is a slim, elongated version of COP designed to fit deep into narrow spark plug wells, commonly used in compact engine layouts, and the rail coil design is a single unit with multiple coils mounted together, supplying several spark plugs from a centralised location.
