It is the longest trade show season The one that begins at the break of summer

and ends in the waning days of the warmest time of the year. And the summer that has just begun promises to be one of the most

interesting of the past few years for the Italian textile-clothing industry, which ended 2017 in great form despite the not-exactly-thrilling news at the start of the year. Contrary to what was expected, the industry enjoyed a growth, which may not go down in history but was enough to keep the employment rate stable.

However, at the time we went to print ( and we bet even for some time after the release of Showcase), Italy’s political situation was far from clear.

The country held general elections and Minister Calenda and Undersecretary Scalfarotto terminated their office, whose policy was that of a full and constant support of the textile industry and trade fair system. It is too early yet to say with certainty what their successors plan to do but, what with those against the euro, those in favor and the uninterested spectators, the prospects are still quite obscure.

Will the allied industries, will the textile districts, will the entrepreneurs be able to carry on with their business and plans in complete disregard of the political-economic context?

The ups and downs of the spread and costs, the promise-threat of export duties and so on will definitely not help them, but the “Made-in-Italy” we “breathe” at the trade fairs has shown its ability to get through the most difficult situations.

We cannot hope for immediate answers, certainly not at the Pitti Filati show which, as usual, opens the trade show season.

But Showcase relies on great experts in an attempt to find answers and learn what awaits us.

E’ la tornata fieristica più lunga. Quella che inizia all’alba dell’estate e finisce al tramonto della stagione più calda. E l’estate che è appena iniziata si preannuncia come una delle più interessanti degli ultimi anni per il tessile-abbigliamento italiano, che è uscito piuttosto in forma da un 2017 che era nato sotto auspici non proprio esaltanti e che invece ha portato ad una crescita, sia pure non da annotare nei libri di storia, e ad un mantenimento sostanziale dei posti di lavoro.

Al momento di andare in stampa però (e, ci sbilanciamo nelle previsioni, anche per qualche mese dopo l’uscita di Showcase) a regnare è la grande indecisione della politica italiana. Sono arrivate le elezioni, il ministro Calenda e il sottosegretario Scalfarotto hanno lasciato dicastero ed incarico dopo una lunga e costante vicinanza al settore del tessile e al sistema fieristico ma sulla loro successione non ci sono nomi e certezze e tra no-euro, fedeli alla linea e spettatori disinteressati le prospettive sono abbastanza oscure.

Riuscirà l’indotto, riusciranno i distretti, riusciranno gli imprenditori a portare avanti lavoro e progetti senza curarsi del contesto politico-economico?

Di sicuro l’altalena di spread, costi, promesse-minacce sui dazi e via di seguito non li aiuterà ma il made in Italy che si ‘respira’ alla fiere ha dimostrato di sapersela cavare anche in situazioni drammatiche.

Sicuramente non ci saranno responsi immediati, tantomeno a Pitti Filati, che come al solito inaugura la stagione dei saloni: Showcase si affida a grandi esperti per farsi raccontare, e raccontarvi, quello che ci aspetta.

63 years old, many years of experience in the world of trade associations (his long career includes positions as President of the Industrialists’ Association of the Province of Varese and Managing Director of the Vago spa of Busto Arsizio), Marino Vago is at his first Italian and international trade show season as the head of Sistema Moda Italia and at his first interview for Showcase, just a few days before the Pitti Uomo show.

You were appointed President of Sistema Moda Italia at a time of great changes for the whole textile industry, including economic crisis, advent of the digital era and unstable political situation. How was your “first day”?

Those like me who have been working in the textile field for over forty years are hardly afraid to be on the front line.

The main difference lies in the responsibility of having to deal with such major changes not only as an entrepreneur but as the representative of an entire production chain.

What has Claudio Marenzi’s presidency achieved? Are you planning to continue in his steps or, instead, to pursue new directions?

Having worked side by side with Claudio Marenzi as Vice-President Vicar of Sistema Moda Italia, I have shared and collaborated with him to reach the achieved goals. So there is no need to change direction, but rather to complete the work done so far. We have to make our entrepreneurs, who get all the credit for the success of our products across the world, proud again. I think that the title of my installation in office-meeting, “The Chain of Value”, clearly expresses my vision.

The fashion and textile Florence-Milan axis is “young” but solid. Is there any chance of Rome joining it?

63 anni, una larghissima esperienza nel mondo delle associazioni di categoria (tra le tante cariche è ex presidente dell’Unione degli Industriali della Provincia di Varese e ad della Vago spa di Busto Arsizio) Marino Vago è, dopo l’elezione, alla prima tornata fieristica italiana e internazionale nelle vesti di numero uno di Sistema Moda Italia. Ed anche alla prima intervista per Showcase, a pochi giorni dal via a Pitti Uomo.

E' diventato presidente di Sistema Moda Italia in un periodo di grandi cambiamenti per tutto l'indotto, tra crisi, avvento del digitale e situazione politica da definire. Qual è stato il primo impatto?

Per chi come me opera nel settore tessile da più di quarant’anni non è una sorpresa essere in prima linea. La vera differenza è la responsabilità di dover affrontare questo periodo di grandi cambiamenti non solo come imprenditore ma come rappresentante di un’intera filiera produttiva.

Cosa lascia al settore l'esperienza di Claudio Marenzi alla presidenza di Sistema Moda Italia?

Dobbiamo attenderci continuità rispetto al passato o qualche cambio di rotta verso altri progetti a breve scadenza?

Essendo stato per più di quattro anni a fianco di Claudio Marenzi come vicepresidente vicario di Sistema Moda Italia ho sia condiviso che collaborato per il raggiungimento degli obiettivi raggiunti. Ora non serve cambiare rotta ma completare il lavoro svolto sin qui. Occorre ridare orgoglio ai nostri imprenditori che sono i veri attori del successo dei nostri prodotti nel mondo. Credo che il titolo dato alla mia assemblea di insediamento: “La Filiera del Valore” sia un messaggio chiaro del mio pensiero.

The Florence-Milan axis is young but already very successful and bound to grow further, I have no doubt about that.

Rome should not make useless efforts to oppose it, but instead should face the facts and see what can be done together to make the general Italian offering complete. If we are finally able to work together, considering all that our cities have to offer, the other countries will be no match for us.

How do you see the role of Confindustria Moda at the table established a few years ago by the government?

Confindustria Moda’s weight is common knowledge: a yearly turnover of 94 billion euros, 50 billion euros of exports, a trade surplus of about 25 billion euros which is equal to 50% of Italy’s whole surplus. The former government realized all this and applied itself very seriously to supporting and promoting the sector and, as a matter of fact, all entrepreneurs have greatly appreciated it. If I were the new Prime Minister, I would strive to do even better than my predecessor, which would lead to a double political and economic result: recognition of the work done and a sure profit for the entire national production system.

Digital technology, sustainability, protection of the “Made in Italy”. Could you please rank each of these textile industry’s “needs” in order of importance?

This is an easy question. The “Made in Italy”, meant as product traceability to the benefit of consumers, comes first.

The second place goes to sustainability, because it is one of the strengths of our upstream production system. Textile companies have been committed to sustainability for twenty years now, seriously and consistently, and not because driven by marketing needs. However, we need to reflect upon the concept of sustainability comprehensively and not

L'asse della moda e del tessile Firenze-Milano è 'giovane' ma appare ben salda. Roma può completare il tris?

L’asse Firenze-Milano è giovane ma vanta successi che possono e devono crescere ancora e di questo sono certo. Roma, se non vuole creare un’inutile contrapposizione, dovrebbe confrontarsi con quanto già proposto e, insieme, vedere cosa serve per completare l’offerta generale italiana. Se riuscissimo, finalmente, a fare gioco di squadra, con le bellezze e le possibilità che le nostre città possono offrire non ci sarebbe partita con le altre nazioni.

Come vede il ruolo di Confindustria Moda nel tavolo creato ormai da un paio di anni dal Governo?

Cosa rappresenta Confindustria Moda è ormai noto a tutti: 94 miliardi di giro d’affari, più di 50 miliardi di esportazioni, un saldo della bilancia commerciale di circa 25 miliardi pari al 50% di tutto l’avanzo italiano. Lo scorso governo non solo ha capito tutto questo ma si è molto impegnato per sostenere il settore e valorizzarlo ulteriormente ed infatti tutti gli operatori del settore hanno molto apprezzato questo impegno. Ecco se io fossi il responsabile del nuovo governo mi adopererei affinché la mia azione possa essere ricordata come ancora migliore di chi mi ha preceduto. Ottenendo così un duplice risultato politico ed economico: apprezzamento per l’operato svolto ed un indubbio beneficio per l’intero settore produttivo nazionale.

Digitale, sostenibilità, tutela del made in Italy. Metta in fila queste tre 'esigenze' del tessile su un ipotetico podio.

Domanda facile: made in al primo posto, intesa come tracciabilità del prodotto a beneficio del consumatore. Poi sostenibilità perché è uno dei punti di forza del nostro sistema produttivo di monte. Le aziende hanno iniziato questo percorso più di vent’anni fa, con interview 11

just taking the “chemical” aspect into consideration. Furthermore, I would like to point out that sustainability begins with respect for human rights, all human rights, and there are countries, even not so far away from us, where there is no such respect. As for digital technology, I’m planning to make our companies’ “digital reputation” rise higher and higher. This is a crucial step in the process of attracting the attention of new consumers: the millennials and the Generation Z. You come from one of Italy’s most active textile districts, Varese. What exactly makes you feel an entrepreneur from Varese?

Varese boasts a textile industry of great importance as for figures and number of people employed in the field. I identify with the typical Varese values: pragmatism, practical sense, the idea of teamwork as more successful than individual work. I strongly hope that our sector will grow into a single big district, highly professional, capable of offering the products rich in quality, comfort and style that the market demands.

And to those who still believe that the best way to deal with the global market, so full of uncertainties, is to proceed “in open order”, I can only wish the best, for the good of the district and, above all, for the good of the companies that make the district up.

Permettetemi però una sottolineatura: la sostenibilità deve partire dal rispetto dei diritti umani, tutti i diritti umani e a me vengono subito in mente Paesi, anche non lontani da noi, dove non mi sembra che ci sia rispetto di tutti questi diritti. Per il digitale ho in mente una fortissima crescita della “reputazione digitale” delle nostre imprese. Un passo indispensabile per catturare l’attenzione dei nuovi consumatori: i millenials e la generazione Z. Arriva da uno dei distretti tessili più attivi, Varese. Cosa c'è di 'varesino' nel suo essere imprenditore?

Effettivamente il tessile di Varese ha numeri e produzioni di tutto rispetto e gli addetti nel territorio sono ancora molti. Mi riconosco nel concetto di varesino: pragmatico, attento al concreto, conscio che il lavoro di squadra dà maggiori garanzie di successo di un unico fuoriclasse. Ecco vorrei che il nostro settore possa crescere, presentandosi al mondo come un unico grande distretto, ricco delle migliori professionalità, capace di offrire quei prodotti ricchi di qualità, confort e stile che il mercato ci chiede. Se poi qualche territorio crede che la migliore soluzione per affrontare un mercato globale così pieno di incognite sia quella di andare da solo in ordine sparso ecco io gli auguro ogni successo per tutto il distretto ma soprattutto per le imprese che lo compongono.

One million square meters, 600 companies and over 6,000 people employed. We could be talking about a medium-sized town featuring high productive and trade capacity and, actually, Centergross, the fashion center just outside of Bologna, could easily qualify as a mid-sized city.

Many years ago, Centergross was talked about on television, for a reason having nothing to do with fashion, when Red Ronnie held his successful Roxy Bar music show at the Centergross warehouses. However, this industrial area had been established years before, in 1977, to rationalize the distribution system of clothing and accessories in a junction crucial to Italy: very close to Carpi, a one-hour drive from Tuscany and Lombardy and next to the country’s major arterial routes, thus, easily reachable from abroad.

The center met with immediate success and, at present, it makes a yearly turnover of about 5 billion euros, not only with the ready-to-wear, but also with high-quality and creative made-in-Italy fashion brands. 60% of business is targeted at foreign markets: Asia, Europe, United States and Middle East. Average attendance figures indicate 10,000 buyers a day and a total of 1,660.000 visitors per year.

Currently at the head of Centergross is Lucia Gazzotti: under her management, the fashion center has strengthened its relationship with foreign countries, promoted initiatives, such as Imperial, which involves also the University of Bologna, and is working on the restyling of the buildings.

Centergross has been a major trade center since the mid-seventies. The founders’ far-sightedness was rewarded by the boom of fast fashion. How important was it to be ready when the boom hit?

We have always been ready to react to market changes. At first, we were important only at the national level and then, with the abolition of customs barriers between European countries, we began trading with Europe. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, we opened up to former USSR countries- the fast fashion business started with the opening up of the large Eastern European markets- and, since 2000, we have been doing business with China.

Un milione di metri quadrati, 600 aziende e più di 6.000 lavoratori. Potrebbero essere numeri da cittadina di medie proporzioni e ottima capacità produttiva e commerciale ed in effetti questo non si discosta molto dalla realtà del Centergross di Bologna, che di fatto è una città della moda alle porte del capoluogo felsineo.

Tanti anni fa venne portato sugli schermi di tutta Italia per un tema non legato alla moda, quando un giovane Red Ronnie ambientò nei capannoni del Centergross il suo fortunato Roxy Bar tutto musicale ma il polo bolognese esisteva già da anni, essendo nato nel 1977 per razionalizzare la distribuzione di abbigliamento e accessori in uno snodo cruciale per l’Italia: a due passi da Carpi, a un’ora di auto da Toscana e Lombardia e a fianco delle principali arterie nazionali, quindi ben raggiungibile anche dall’estero.

Fu subito boom ed ora siamo arrivati ad un livello che prevede un giro di affari complessivo di circa 5 miliardi di euro, con una moda che non è solo quella legata al ‘pronto’ ma anche al made in Italy di qualità e ricerca. Da qui passa un commercio che per il 60% è rivolto ai mercati esteri: Asia, Europa, Stati Uniti e Medio-Oriente. La frequenza media è di 10.000 buyer al giorno, per un totale di 1.660.000 accessi annuali.

A presidere il Centergross è oggi Lucia Gazzotti: sotto la sua guida si sono intensificati i rapporti con i paesi esteri, si sono sviluppate iniziative, come quella di Imperial, che hanno coinvolto anche l’Università di Bologna, ed è iniziato anche un restyling degli immobili Il Centergross era già un importante polo commerciale a metà anni '70. Una lungimiranza premiata poi dal boom del fast fashion. Quanto è stato importante farsi trovare pronti quando c'è stato questo boom?

E’ nel nostro DNA essere pronti a reagire ai cambiamenti dei mercati. All’inizio siamo diventati importanti a livello nazionale; dopo l’abbattimento delle barriere doganali fra gli stati europei abbiamo iniziato a commerciare con l’Europa. Con la caduta del Muro di Berlino ci siamo quindi aperti ai Paesi dell’allora Unione sovietica - il fast fashion è nato con l’apertura al grande mercato dell’Europa dell’Est – e dal 2000, infine, è stata la volta del mercato cinese.

Lucia Gazzotti You are increasingly opening up to foreign markets, through trips and missions at international trade shows and workshops. Where did you get the most interesting ideas?

In chronological order: the 10th Chic show in Peking, which we attended in 2012, the Next Season show in Poland (from February 19 to 21, 2013 in Poznan), the two latest CMP Fashion Collection Premiere Moscow shows in September 2017 and September 2018, the Central Asia Fashion show in Almaty in September 2017. Our next trips will be to Gallery Dusseldorf in July, at the CPM in Moscow again in September and to Lifestyle Iran in December.

Is Centergross more focused on quantity or quality ? At what market segment are the fashion brands targeted at?

Centergross focuses on quality targeted at the needs and requirements of the middle classes all over the world and offers an excellent quality/ price ratio. But we can also deal with big quantities of products when requested by our customers.

Not only fashion. What are the other sectors that Centergross is planning to focus on in the near future?

In addition to go on providing services to the benefit of Centergross’ population, that is, the 6,000 people who work here, we plan to develop the macro sectors related to the “Made in Italy”, such as food and design.

Picture Centergross in 2028. What do you see?

I see increasingly attractive and high-performance exhibition spaces, owing to a major restyling and environmental and energy efficiency program which we have been carrying out for over a year now in the whole district area, and an increasingly known Centergross across the world, due to the digital communication tools which I hope will soon be at the core of our district’s communication system at the international level.

In ordine cronologico posso citare la 10’ edizione della fiera Chic di Pechino, a cui abbiamo partecipato nel 2012, la fiera Next Season in Polonia (dal 19al 21 febbraio 2013 a Poznan), le due ultime edizioni di CMP Fashion Collection Premiere Moscow di settembre 2017 e del 2018, la fiera Central Asia Fashion di Almaty del settembre 2017. Le prossime tappe ci vedranno invece al Gallery Dusseldorf a luglio, di nuovo al CPM di Mosca a settembre e a Lifestyle Iran a dicembre.

Il vostro polo, in riferimento alla moda, è più di quantità o di qualità? I brand che fascia di mercato coprono?

Centergross si caratterizza per una qualità tarata sui bisogni e le necessità della classe media mondiale e vanta un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo. La quantità viene di conseguenza in base alle richieste della clientela: siamo in grado di soddisfare pienamente necessità di grandi quantità di prodotti.

Non solo moda. Quali sono gli altri settori sui quali Centergross pensa di puntare nel prossimo futuro?

Oltre a continuare a introdurre servizi a beneficio della popolazione di Centergross e quindi dei 6.000 lavoratori, intendiamo nel futuro sviluppare i macro settori connessi al made in Italy, quali il food e il design.

Immagini Centergross nel 2028. Cosa vede?

Vedo degli spazi espositivi sempre più attraenti e performanti, grazie all’importante operazione di restyling e efficientamento ambientale ed energetico che stiamo svolgendo oramai da un anno su tutta l’area del distretto, e un Centergross sempre più presente e conosciuto in tutto il mondo, grazie agli strumenti forniti dalla comunicazione digitale, che auspico diventeranno sempre più il cuore della comunicazione del nostro distretto a livello internazionale.

It is due to come of age next year, but the experience of Associazione Tessile e Salute (Textiles and Health Association) is that of a veteran. Figures and statistical data describe better than words the work done so far and, above all, what has yet to be done in the field of consumers’ safety and health protection and to support the fights of clothing and shoe manufacturers. That is why Tessile e Salute works side by side with the public sector- from the Ministry of Health to the NAS (office against the adulteration of foodstuffs), from the Local Health Authorities to the public prosecutor’s offices- and among the members of its Board of Governors are the National Chamber of Fashion, Sistema Moda Italia, Federchimica and Città Studi.

One of the “oldest” witnesses of the association’s activity is Director Mauro Rossetti.

What has changed about the association in 17 years’ time ?

The association was established to deal with eco-toxicology and help Italian manufacturing companies. Back in those days, however, nobody cared about chemical sustainability except us. Now it is widely acknowledged and discussed as an important topic. Italy is the last Western country to rely on a complete production chain and to protect its workers, it does not exploit child’s labor and has the world’s best fashion industry without giving up on sustainability, even ethical sustainability. Our aim is for this to be said.

How does the inspection process begin?

It is commissioned either by a private company or a public body. We started out in Biella but we have grown to have a national reach and to be a benchmark for both the public service and fashion brands. The REACH regulation is one of the normative aspects which has received a lot of our attention , whereas in the private sector we have worked on a set of shared rules, because it is hard to understand why Italy’s fashion industry has to play by the rules set by others and never by its own rules.

Il prossimo anno diventerà ‘maggiorenne’ ma di cose da raccontare l’associazione Tessile e Salute ne ha già molte: più che altro numeri e statistiche che descrivono meglio delle parole il lavoro fatto, e soprattutto quello ancora da fare, nel campo della sicurezza e della tutela della salute dei consumatori, ma anche in appoggio alle battaglie di reciprocità portate avanti dai produttori di abbigliamento e calzature. Per questo Tessile e Salute opera in sinergia anche nel pubblico, dal Ministero della Salute ai NAS, dalle ASL alle Procure della Repubblica e del consiglio direttivo fanno parte, tra gli altri, Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, Sistema Moda Italia, Federchimica e Città Studi.

Uno dei testimoni ‘storici’ di questa attività è il direttore Mauro Rossetti.

Cosa è cambiato in 17 anni di associazione?

Siamo nati per occuparci di eco-tossicologia aiutando così le imprese manifatturiere del made in Italy ma allora a parlare di questo o di sostenibilità chimica eravamo soli mentre adesso è un tema comune. L’Italia è l’ultimo paese occidentale ad avere tutta la filiera ancora completa, tutela i propri lavoratori, non sfrutta i bambini ed ha la moda migliore al mondo senza rinunciare a questa sostenibilità anche etica. Noi ci battiamo affinché questo venga detto.

Come nasce un controllo su un prodotto?

Viene commissionato da un ente o da un privato, in ugual modo. Siamo nati a Biella ma ci siamo detti subito che dovevamo avere un respiro nazionale lavorando sui due fronti e così siamo diventati un riferimento per i ministeri così come per i player della moda. Il Reach è stato sicuramente uno degli aspetti normativi di cui ci siamo occupati di più anche perché non pregiudicasse il sistema paese. Nel privato invece abbiamo cercato di definire regole condivise perché si capisce poco perché l’Italia della moda debba avere regole imposte dagli altri e non possa mai imporre le proprie nonostante sia la nazione con più esperienza nel settore. interview 25

Mauro Rossetti opment have strongly relied on product inspection. Do they work together or does each go its own way?

In the national private sector, a common ground has been found in the two national eco-toxicological lines. As for inspection on what circulates in the market, in my opinion, it’s more or less like being in the year zero, because we work with the public sector when the problem is already evident. Preventive inspection is hardly carried out in Europe. And there are no mutual agreements with other countries: we have trouble exporting to China, but we import everything from it.

Do products dangerous to our health come mostly from the Far East?

As far as we are concerned, yes. Which does not mean that everything coming from the Far East is dangerous, but if something is unsafe, in 99% of cases it comes from there.

Is it riskier to buy a T-shirt or a pair of shoes?

That I cannot say. In 2012, we conducted a study on behalf of the European Commission: 70% of the items believed to be unsafe were clothing, 15% shoes and another 15% metal accessories. However, inspections are more commonly performed on clothing than on shoes.

Is there a basic rule that consumers should follow to be sure about what they are buying?

We start with the analysis of the garment’s fiber composition, but in 15% of cases it is not clearly stated on the label. Therefore, we advise against buying a garment having no composition label, because it is definitely not an oversight, it’s intentional. We have also found 34% of labels to be incorrect with, for instance, viscose marked as cashmere, which gives us a total of 49%. And watch out for the price: if it’s too low….

Negli ultimi anni Camera della Moda prima e il Tavolo della Moda creato dal Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico poi hanno puntato molto sui controlli. Sono lavori coordinabili o ognuno va per la sua strada?

Un punto comune nel privato nazionale è stato trovato nelle due linee eco-tossicologiche nazionali. Dal punto di vista dei controlli di quello che circola sul mercato mi viene da dire che siamo quasi all’anno zero, perché lavoriamo con le istituzioni dopo che si è manifestato il problema. I controlli preventivi rimangono un problema in tutta Europa. Non c’è nessuna reciprocità con altri stati; fatichiamo ad esportare in Cina, ma da là importiamo di tutto.

Il pericolo per la nostra salute arriva soprattutto da Oriente?

Dal nostro punto di vista sì. Non vuol dire che tutto quello che arriva da lì non è sicuro ma se c’è qualcosa di non sicuro nel 99% dei casi arriva da lì.

E’ più rischioso acquistare una maglietta o un paio di scarpe?

Non c’è una risposta. Nel 2012 abbiamo fatto uno studio per conto della Commissione Europea: nel 70% dei casi incriminati gli articoli erano di abbigliamento, nel 15% di scarpe e nell’altro 15% di accessori metallici. Però è molto più comune analizzare abiti che scarpe.

C’è una regola da consigliare ai consumatori per tutelarsi negli acquisti?

Noi partiamo con l’analisi della composizione fibrosa di un capo ma nel 15% dei casi questa non è indicata nell’etichetta. Quindi se trovate un abito senza indicazione fibrosa è meglio non comprarlo perché qualcosa di strano c’è, non è sicuramente una dimenticanza involontaria. E abbiamo anche trovato il 34% di etichette sbagliate, addirittura con viscosa indicata come cachemire, quindi siamo già al 49%. E poi fare attenzione al prezzo: se è troppo basso…

Twelve months ago, Showcase focused its attention on the first Milano Unica show held in July. A turning point in the history of the show, eagerly awaited by both the organizing team and the exhibitors. Now that the summertime show is a reality, we can say that it passed the test with flying colors and that the trade show calendar, after so many shake-ups, returned to usual. Although there are still rumours about a change in the winter show’s schedule too and that the only reason why it hasn’t happened yet is because the calendar is completely jammed with trade fairs.

One of the few certainties on the textile trade show scene is still Pitti Filati: a well-oiled mechanism, basically stable figures, successful off-show events, such as Feel the Yarn, which this year allows the students to judge their own work, and Vintage Selection, which is held at the Fortezza da Basso. Italy’s leading spinning companies go on pursuing product research and sustainability and the markets seem to be responsive, although not in a continuous way. The 83rd show presents the new research space called WWW, as a tribute to the digital revolution.

As for Milano Unica, the Italian trade show is enjoying its current success, but the figures of the September show are not that impressive, so it can’t just sit back and rest on its laurels. Both in Milan and Paris, the presentation of the fall-winter collections usually attracts more visitors and exhibitors, who place their hopes on this kind of sample collections. This applies to Prato, the wool manufacturing district par excellence, but to the other Italian textile districts as well.

Before the Milano Unica show kicks off, however, the indicator of how things are going is the French Blossom Première Vision, the trade show held for a hand-picked group of exhibitors, which opens in the month of July and is targeted at high-end and luxury fashion brands.

Instead, The London Textile Fair has nothing to worry about when it comes to the attendance of exhibitors: the show held in Islington has a full house and every single space available, including the rooms inside and the terraces, has been taken up. The arrival of a large group of Turkish exhibitors- well-organized and supported by the national trade associations- has opened up new scenarios on the British market, more interesting in terms of quality and creativity than of quantity. Therefore, Italian companies should differentiate themselves by competing on the product and

Dodici mesi fa Showcase accentrava l’attenzione sulla prima edizione a luglio di Milano Unica. Una svolta quasi epocale attesa con trepidazione e fibrillazione tanto dagli organizzatori quanto dagli espositori. Ora che la seconda edizione ‘in piena estate’ è realtà possiamo dire che l’esame è stato superato a pieni voti e che quindi il calendario fieristico, dopo tanti scossoni, si è assestato. Anche se l’ipotesi di uno spostamento del salone milanese anche per l’edizione invernale non è affatto tramontata ma solo ‘complicata’ da fattori oggettivi come la congestione delle date o la mancanza di spazi.

In tutto questo una delle certezze è Pitti Filati: formula rodata, numeri sostanzialmente stabili, progetti ed iniziative collaterali di successo, basti pensare a Feel the Yarn, che stavolta coinvolgerà gli studenti anche nel giudizio degli abiti realizzati. O la Vintage Selection, organizzata direttamente alla Fortezza da Basso. La filatura italiana d’eccellenza continua il grande lavoro di ricerca su prodotto e sostenibilità ed i mercati stanno rispondendo, sia pure a corrente alternata. L’edizione numero 83 si basa anche sul nuovo spazio ricerca, chiamato WWW in omaggio alla rivoluzione digitale.

Di Milano Unica abbiamo detto in apertura. Il salone italiano si gode il momento ma i numeri dell’edizione di settembre non inducono a voli pindarici e non consentono di dormire sugli allori dello scorso luglio. La presentazione delle collezioni autunno-inverno favorisce da sempre, tanto a Milano quanto a Parigi, una maggior presenza di visitatori e di espositori, che su questo tipo di campionari ripongono molte speranze. Vale per il distretto di Prato, lanaiolo per eccellenza, ma anche per gli altri.

Ma a Rho qualcuno arriverà già con un termometro in mano, quello francese firmato Blossom Première Vision, la fiera a numeri chiusi, ma non ridotti, che aprirà il mese di luglio. Anche stavolta le aziende saranno presenti su invito e in qualità di produttori di tessuti riservati al lusso e alla fascia altissima del mercato.

Se c’è una cosa che invece non deve temere The London Textile Fair è la presenza di aziende: ormai la fiera di Islington ha raggiunto il tutto esaurito e gli organizzatori hanno riempito gli spazi disponibili, comprese le sale interne e le terrazze. L’arrivo, corposo, ben organizzato e sostenuto dalle associazioni nazionali di categoria, di espositori turchi ha aperto nuovi scenari di concorrenza sul mercato britannico, interessante più per qualità e fantasia che per quantità. After the London show, two months will go by without a single fair, since the entire month of August is still off limits, although someone suggests to consider it as a working month like in many other countries. Textile exhibitors will go back to their stands in September for Première Vision Paris, which celebrates the tenth anniversary of Awards this year. The trade show held at Parc des Expositions maintains its formula but changes its schedule slightly to meet the needs of those celebrating the Jewish Yom Kippur. Because of another feast, the Chinese New Year’s Day, the February show saw a drop in the attendance figures of Oriental visitors, so a new calendar adapting to the needs of business travelers is more than understandable. Even and mostly Texworld Paris and the Messe Frankfurt shows suffered from the drop in attendance figures in February, but the organizing staff is planning the opening of a third pavilion in the center of Le Bourget: an increasing number of exhibitors and bigger stands are the reasons behind such a decision, while hoping to be able to replicate in February 2019.

As usual, the trade show season closes with Filo, which we of La Spola attend personally and which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year. We will celebrate the “golden wedding” anniversary of a trade show that was able to undergo a radical change and now, just like the London Fair, has filled up all available spaces at Palazzo delle Stelline.

And when the curtain will finally fall on these four months of business, collections, sample collections, visitors and stands, there will be very little time to relax. First of all, because the Oriental trade shows will be kicking off and, secondly, because 2019, from the organizational point of view, will be just around the corner. For us of La Spola and Showcase too, for 2019 is the year of ITMA in Barcelona, with which we have a media partnership agreement and which we will be attending with our own stand and a special magazine issue.

A febbraio un’altra ricorrenza, il Capodanno cinese, ha causato un calo delle presenze di visitatori dall’Oriente e quindi un calendario adattato alle esigenze di chi viaggia per lavoro è più che comprensibile.

Anche e soprattutto Texworld Paris e le fiere sorelle di Messe Frankfurt hanno accusato il calo di febbraio ma gli organizzatori rilanciano con l’apertura di un terzo padiglione nel centro di Le Bourget: espositori in crescita e aumento e della grandezza media degli stand i motivi della scelta, con la speranza di poterla confermare anche a febbraio 2019.

Filo chiuderà come sempre il calendario delle fiere che noi de La Spola seguiamo in modo diretto e lo farà con la celebrazione della cinquantesima edizione. Le nozze d’oro di un salone che ha saputo reimpostarsi e che adesso, un po’ come la London Fair, ha praticamente riempito tutti gli spazi disponibili al Palazzo delle Stelline.

E quando si chiuderà il sipario su questi quattro mesi di affari, collezioni, campionari, visitatori e stand il tempo per rilassarsi sarà poco. Sia perché comunque rimangono i saloni orientali, sia perché il 2019, organizzativamente parlando, sarà già alle porte. Anche per noi di La Spola e Showcase, visto che l’anno che viene sarà quello di Itma a Barcellona: abbiamo infatti già l’accordo di media partnership con il salone, al quale saremo presenti con uno stand e con un numero speciale della rivista. fairs 33

Fabric becomes a work of art Manteco, il tessuto diventa un’opera d’arte

Arts and crafts, contemporaneity and tradition, experimentation and the beaten path: words which can be either antithetical or synonymous. Definitely not always easy to link together if the goal is excellence, for the cross-association of working methods, styles and ideas may have a boomerang effect. But this is not what happened when Manteco met Loris Cecchini: on one side, one of the Pratese textile district’s leading companies, on the other, the internationally-renowned contemporary artist whose works have been chosen to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art. An exhibition showcasing the “ingenious” artwork by Cecchini, who is Milanese by birth, Sienese by education and citizen of the world by vocation. At the same time, Manteco will be celebrating its 75th anniversary by reproducing Cecchini’s “waterbones” on fabric, steel modules which Cecchini enjoys sculpting into the most diverse shapes.

They look like bones, laces, spiderwebs and waves. “Actually, waterbone is an oxymoron- the artist says- it is a poetic title which grants me a sort of morphological freedom. I use the modules by assembling them together in different ways.

The steel module installation covering the walls of Florence’s Gallery Hotel Art is recreated in the shape of a tactile, stiff and close-woven fabric produced by Manteco for the cover of the artist’s catalog of the exhibition held at the Pecci Center, Waterbones. It is composed of carded wool, Manteco’s signature product, lamé and polyester. The weave features an atypical structure, which was created by using interweaving effects and lamé threads in the proportion of four lamé threads to one carded yarn, in order to highlight the pattern’s shading and definition, whereas the polyester warp lends the fabric structure and strength. And so, Cecchini’s waterbones are given a 3D effect of the highest definition, in an abrasion-resistant fabric which is also reversible, with a negative/positive effect on both the right and reverse side, allowing the artist to make two different covers for the same catalog. A recognition of Manteco’s commitment to art and culture, 75 years after its establishment in 1943 by Enzo Mantellassi, followed over the years by his son Franco and his grandsons Matteo and Marco, who brought the company to the top of the market with a yearly turnover of more than 70 million euros and six million meters of fabrics produced and sold all over the world.

Arte e artigianato, contemporaneità e tradizione, sperimentazione e certezze: termini a volte in antitesi, anche se solo apparente, ed a volte in simbiosi. Sicuramente non sempre facili da abbinare se quello che si cerca è l’eccellenza perchè la contaminazione reciproca di metodi di lavoro, stili e pensieri può diventare un boomerang.

Non è quello che è successo quando Manteco ha incontrato Loris Cecchini: da un lato l’azienda che ad oggi è al top nel distretto tessile pratese, dall’altro un artista come Loris Cecchini, che a Prato sta legando il nome in quanto le sue opere sono state scelte per festeggiare i 30 anni del Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci. Una mostra delle ‘ingegnerie’ dell'artista milanese di nascita, senese di formazione e cittadino del mondo per vocazione. Per festeggiare i 75 anni anni di attività Manteco ha riproposto su tessuto le “ossa d'acqua” di Cecchini, i moduli d'acciaio che Cecchini si diverte ad articolare nelle fogge più diverse. Ricordano ossa, trine, ragnatele, onde: “In realtà ossa d'acqua è un ossimoro - ammette l'artista - è un titolo poetico per garantirmi una sorta di libertà morfologica. Uso i moduli in aggregazione diversa” L’installazione in moduli che appare sulle pareti del Gallery Hotel Art di Firenze rivive nelle forme in un tessuto tattile, rigido e compatto prodotto da Manteco per la cover del catalogo della mostra dell’artista al ‘Pecci’, ‘Waterbones”. E’ composto da lana cardata, l’eccellenza per Manteco, da lamé e da poliestere. La trama ha una struttura atipica data da effetti di intreccio e con un impiego di fili di lamé fino a quattro volte superiore al filo cardato, per sottolineare ombreggiatura e definizione del disegno, mentre l’ordito in poliestere crea struttura e resistenza.

E così le ossa d’acqua di Cecchini trovano un effetto 3D di massima definizione, resistente all'abrasione e all'utilizzo ed anche double face, con un effetto negativo/ positivo sia su diritto che sul rovescio che ha consentito il lancio di due diverse copertine per lo stesso catalogo.

Un riconoscimento di arte e cultura per Manteco, 75 anni dopo quel 1943 che vide la nascita dell’azienda con l’iniziativa imprenditoriale di Enzo Mantellassi, seguito nel fortunato corso degli anni dal figlio Franco prima e dai nipoti Matteo e Marco adesso, con Manteco che si trova ai vertici del mercato con un fatturato superiore ai 70 milioni di euro e sei milioni di metri di tessuto prodotti e venduti in tutto il mondo.

From Milan to Barcelona Brio 24, da Milano a Barcellona

From one ITMA show to another, going through four years of perfecting, testing and putting a machine in working order. This is the story of the Biancalani company and of its latest development, Brio 24: a drying machine for any kind of knitted fabric, both in tubular and open form.

The machine was introduced at the ITMA 2015 show in Milan, but it was then “put on hold” due to the many orders placed for its “older sister”, Airo 24, with Biancalani busy meeting the requests of customers from all textile markets.

Now the time has come for the release of this machinery, which represents the updated version of a previous one-tank machine which provided discontinuous drying of the fabric and which has been operating for many years (a lot of machines have already been installed in production departments in Bangladesh).

With BRIO 24, the material goes through four consecutive two-tank modules for continuous drying of knitted fabrics, either 100% natural or in blends with viscose or other synthetic or artificial fibers. The fabric enters the machine on one side and exists on the other completely dry, soft and dense. The process consists in a series of alternating passages between high-frequency vibrating trays, inside which the fabric is dried and receives an homogeneously distributed relaxing and shrinking action.

A well-known foreign customer has already tested the machine on over 5,000 meters of knitted fabrics. A very successful test, considering that the machine is on its way to the South-American company and Biancalani is now working on the machine’s final version, which will be officially introduced to customers at the ITMA 2019 show in Barcelona.

Biancalani’s range of target markets is wide, as knitwear represents a large slice of the worldwide textile production, in particular, in the equatorial zone, and the Prato-based company has always been very interested in knitwear.

Da una Itma all’altra passando attraverso quattro anni di perfezionamento, test, prove e messa in funzione. E’ la storia del nuovo macchinario della linea Brio 24 di Biancalani, un asciugante in grado di dare stabilità dimensionale alla maglieria sia tubolare che aperta.

Un prodotto presentato a Itma 2015 a Milano e poi rimasto in una sorta di attesa dovuta ai tanti ordini arrivati durante e dopo la fiera per la ‘sorella’ Airo 24, con la Biancalani impegnata a lungo a soddisfare le richieste di clienti di ogni mercato tessile.

Adesso i tempi sono maturi per la commercializzazione di questo macchinario, che rappresenta l’evoluzione di una precedente versione a vasca singola che asciugava il tessuto in discontinuo e che da anni è già funzionante (molte macchine sono già installate in reparti produttivi in Bangladesh).

La conformazione attuale di BRIO 24 prevede il passaggio del materiale in quattro moduli consecutivi a doppia vasca per il trattamento in continuo della maglia di composizione naturale o mista a viscosa o ad altre fibre sintetiche o artificiali. Il manufatto entra da un lato della macchina ed esce dall’altro asciutta, morbida e densa.

Il processo consiste nel passaggio del manufatto attraverso le vasche soggette ad una vibrazione ad alta frequenza, all’interno delle quali la maglia si asciuga, si restringe ottenendo il massimo rientro possibile per ogni tipo di intreccio e composizione.

Un rinomato cliente straniero ha testato la macchina con oltre 5000 metri di tessuto a maglia. Un test superato a pieni voti visto che la macchina ha già preso la rotta per l’azienda sudamericana e quindi la Biancalani è già al lavoro per costruire la versione definitiva che sarà mostrata alla clientela in modo ufficiale durante Itma 2019 a Barcellona.

Il target è ampio, visto che la maglieria rappresenta una grande fetta della produzione di tessile mondiale, e se ne produce tanta soprattutto in tutta la fascia equatoriale, e la maglia da sempre ha molto interessato l’azienda pratese 40 focus

Detox Campaign: a voluntary Campagna Detox: un impegno su base volontaria che dà i suoi frutti commitment that bears fruit di Elisa Signorini

There is no legal obligation, nor are there sanctions, but the “Detox List”, that is, the companies joining the Detox campaign and the assessment of the results achieved, is of a certain importance in the fashion world and in judging the companies’ commitment to environmental protection and business ethics.

We discussed the matter with Giuseppe Ungherese, who is in charge of Greenpeace Italia’s antipollution campaign.

Let’s go over the history of the Detox campaign.

The purpose of the campaign is to eliminate toxic chemicals from textile products and production cycles, and it binds the producers to take responsibility for their modus operandi and for the suppliers they work with. Greenpeace launched the campaign in 2011, at a time when the issue of sustainability of production processes and use of poisonous substances was a large one, after years of extensive delocalization in countries where environmental protection is the most lax.

What exactly do the companies commit themselves to do?

The campaign requires transparency in the dumping of industrial waste from companies and suppliers, traceability of the supply chain and individuation of the critical points in the system.

Did you achieve the desired results?

This campaign triggered a veritable revolution, which went beyond the number of the participating companies, because it led to new solutions which do not involve the use of poisonous substances. It is obviously a demanding challenge for the companies, but the actual elimination of many chemicals and the companies’ great support are very reassuring. And what we believe is the most successful result is that not only the big brands, such as Miroglio and Valentino, came to the forefront,

Non comporta un obbligo giuridico, tantomeno sanzioni, ma la ‘Sfilata Detox’, ossia la classifica delle aziende che hanno aderito e la valutazione dei loro risultati, ha un peso sul pianeta moda e sulla considerazione dell’impegno delle aziende per l’ambiente e l’etica del lavoro.

Ne parliamo con Giuseppe Ungherese, responsabile campagna inquinamento di Greenpeace Italia.

Ripercorriamo la storia della campagna Detox.

Questa campagna mira all’eliminazione delle sostanze chimiche pericolose dai prodotti e dai processi produttivi, impegna i produttori sul loro modus agendi, ma richiede loro anche un controllo sui propri fornitori. Greenpeace la lancia nel 2011, momento in cui il problema legato alla sostenibilità dei processi produttivi e all’uso di sostanze tossiche era molto forte perché si veniva da anni di massiccia delocalizzazione in paesi in cui le maglie del rispetto dell’ambiente erano molto larghe.

Esattamente a cosa si impegnano le aziende aderenti?

La campagna richiede la trasparenza sugli scarichi delle aziende e dei loro fornitori, la tracciabilità della filiera e l’individuazione dei nodi critici su cui intervenire.

I risultati sono stato quelli desiderati?

Have the companies gained any positive feedback from consumers?

At present, consumers still have a hard time understanding how a product is made. Unfortunately, we are still far from clear labels that let consumers know what they’re wearing, but there is growing attention, not as much as in the food industry, but we’re getting close.

What steps have yet to be made?

Greenpeace has no tools other than making producers and users aware of the problem, so now the ball is in the lawmaker’s court. However, we are happy that our campaign triggered other campaigns, such as Fashion Revolution for labor rights, based on the same criteria (traceability and transparency). It is important for people to feel the need, more than believing to be under a legal obligation: we all have to realize that a certain percentage of the product’s price does not appear on the tag and is paid for by our planet, by the environment.

What are your short-term plans?

First of all, updating the list of the companies taking part in the campaign, which provides consumers with valuable information. In the next few months, we will also present an evaluation report on the campaign’s results, which we can already describe as very positive, because many noxious substances have been eliminated from production processes and many companies have found new solutions, which they probably would have not been committed to finding without us spurring them on.

Per le aziende c’è un riscontro positivo diretto da parte del consumatore?

Ad oggi per il consumatore finale di un capo di abbigliamento non è facile capire come è fatto un determinato prodotto: purtroppo siamo ancora molto lontani dalle ‘etichette parlanti’, però c’è attenzione, non ancora come nel settore alimentare, ma ci si sta sempre più avvicinando.

Quali passi si possono fare ancora?

Greenpeace non ha strumenti se non quello di sensibilizzare produttori e utilizzatori, la palla adesso passa al legislatore. Però è motivo di soddisfazione che dalla nostra campagna abbiano preso le mosse altre battaglie, penso a Fashion Revolution sui diritti dei lavoratori, che usano i nostri stessi criteri (tracciabilità e trasparenza). Ancor prima dell’obbligo giuridico, è importante che le persone avvertano la necessità: tutti dobbiamo tener presente che il prezzo del prodotto ha una quota nascosta che non compare sul cartellino e che è pagato dal pianeta, dall’ambiente.

Ci sono programmi a breve?

Innanzitutto l’aggiornamento della classifica delle aziende aderenti, che periodicamente serve a dare informazioni ai consumatori, nei prossimi mesi presenteremo anche un report con un bilancio della campagna, che possiamo già dire molto positivo perché molte sostanze nocive sono state bandite dai processi produttivi e molte aziende hanno individuato nuove modalità che forse senza la nostra spinta non si sarebbero impegnate a cercare. textile 45

The “high-definition” story La storia del tessile raccontata ‘in alta definizione’ of Prato’s textile industry A project carried out, at first, with the collaboration of Prato’s Textile Museum, and then on its own to provide fully digitalized archival records covering seventy years of history of the company established in 1944 and of Prato’s textile industry. Lanificio Bisentino has a rich heritage of its own textile collections and of archive material of the sixties, seventies and eighties purchased over the years and continues the work of Prato’s HeritageHub pilot project developed within Creativewear, a European idea which the City of Prato was among the first to embrace.

“We joined the project along with another nine companies of the district- Guido Gramigni explains- and once the experimental phase was completed, we carried on the project by digitalizing our archive material. According to a first estimate, we have a few ten thousands of articles, by making a rough calculation of the years of activity and with a range of 4-500 articles per collection. We began keeping properly documented and preserved archival records in the seventies, so now they cover a period of about forty years”.

Every fabric was photographed and downloaded on the platform created by the Textile Museum, in order for all archive material to be accessible online: the images are high-definition and the file card includes some technical information. And a tag is assigned to each image to narrow the search by year or type. However, the records are not useful only to those who visit the platform: “The archival records are one of Lanificio Bisentino’s keystones, not only the company’s historical memory, but also a valuable work tool. As a matter of fact- Gramigni says- we use the records ourselves to create new collections. Our records are classified by type of fabric: tartan patterns, jacquard patterns and so on.

Our technical staff and designers can easily access the records as required with no waste of time”.

With all records in digital form, even Bisentino’s customers will be able to get a better idea of the company’s products by looking through the website, whereas now they have to come to the headquarters and consult the records on the spot. Lanificio Bisentino’s digital records will be officially introduced at the Première Vision show, where visitors will be able to access the platform. The implementation of some functions is proceeding at a brisk pace and the records in digital form are expected to be available in time for the Parisian show in September.

Un lavoro in team con il Museo del Tessuto di Prato poi proseguito in autonomia per dotarsi di un archivio completamente digitalizzato che racconti oltre settanta anni di storia dell’azienda fondata nel 1944 e del tessile pratese. Il Lanificio Bisentino porta nel presente e nel futuro un patrimonio fatto di collezioni proprie e archivi tessili degli anni ’60, ’70 e ’80 acquistati nel tempo e lo fa proseguendo il lavoro del progetto pilota di Prato HeritageHub sviluppato nell’ambito di Creativewear, idea europea che vede il Comune di Prato nelle vesti di capofila.

“Abbiamo aderito al progetto con altre nove aziende del distretto – spiega Guido Gramigni – ed una volta terminata la sperimentazione abbiamo proseguito nella digitalizzazione del nostro materiale. Ad una prima valutazione parliamo di qualche decina di migliaia di articoli, facendo una valutazione degli anni di attività e calcolando 4-500 articoli a collezione. Abbiamo iniziato a tenere un archivio organizzato a partire dagli anni ’70 e quindi copriamo una quarantina di anni”.

Ogni tessuto fotografato finisce sulla piattaforma messa a punto dal Museo del Tessuto in modo che tutto sia consultabile online: le immagini sono ad alta definizione e la scheda contiene anche alcune caratteristiche tecniche. In più sono inserite dei tag per facilitare la ricerca per anno e tipologia. Ma l’archivio non presenta vantaggi solo per la fruizione da parte dei visitatori della piattaforma: “Per Bisentino l’archivio è uno dei fulcri dell’azienda, non solo memoria storica del lanificio ma strumento privilegiato di lavoro. Infatti ne facciamo anche un uso interno – continua Gramigni – nella creazione e nella realizzazione delle collezioni. Il nostro archivio è già diversificato per tipologia: vi sono così i libri che contengono i disegni tartan, quelli con i jacquard e via di seguito. I nostri tecnici e l’ufficio stile possono accedere per la consultazione accorciando i tempi”. Una volta terminato il lavoro anche i clienti potranno andare al Lanificio Bisentino dopo essersi già fatti un’idea grazie alla ricerca via Internet, mentre adesso devono andare in sede e iniziare lì il lavoro di consultazione dell’archivio.

La vetrina ufficiale dell’archivio digitale del Lanificio Bisentino potrebbe essere quella di Première Vision, dove la piattaforma sarà presentata ai visitatori dello stand. L’implementazione di alcune funzioni sembra infatti procedere speditamente e per la fiera parigina di settembre l’archivio digitale dovrebbe essere pronto.

The Apulian textile industry: Tessile pugliese: una tradizione che si rinnova a renewed tradition di Elisa Signorini

Tradition and modernity blend in the Apulian textile industry, an Italian production niche, but well-known in both the national and international market. For some years now, the region has also become very popular as a tourist destination, and not only for summer vacationing, by promoting its natural beauties, excellent cuisine and textile products. Suffice is to mention the media attention that accompanied bridalwear in television productions on satellite and digital channels.

According to the National Italian Districts Observatory, Apulia is the leading Southern-Italian region in the clothing-textile industry, in terms of both operating companies (about 7,000) and number of workers (about 38,000), distributed among three areas: Trulli/Itria Valley (to the south of Bari), Northern Bari area/the new Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani and the Salento area (near Lecce). The Apulian textile industry in the Bari area has a great impact at both the regional and national level, as it accounts for 65% of Italy’s childrenswear and bridalwear production.

Before the 2008 economic crisis, the Bank of Italy estimated the added value of the fashion sector at about one billion euros, which represents 15% of the total added value of the region’s manufacturing industry.

Furthermore, Apulia’s is Italy’s fourth largest industry by number of workers in the shoemaking sector and the first largest in Southern Italy.

Salvatore Toma, the president of Confindustria Taranto’s Fashion section and SMI’s contact person in Apulia, gives us an account of the local textile industry.

Mr. President, what is the geography of Apulia’s textile industry?

The clothing manufacturing companies are based in Martinafranca and specialize in men’s and women’s outerwear. Until recently, these

La regione è ormai da anni meta fissa di un turismo, non solo ma soprattutto estivo, che ha 'scoperto' il tacco dello Stivale rivalutandone le bellezze del territorio, la qualità della cucina ed anche i prodotti legati ai tessuti, basti pensare alla vetrina mediatica avuta dagli abiti da sposa in molte produzioni televisive sui canali satellitari e su quelli digitali.

Secondo l'Osservatorio Nazionale Distretti Italiani la Puglia è la prima regione meridionale nel tessile abbigliamento, sia per numero di imprese attive (circa 7.000) sia per numero di addetti (circa 38.000) distribuite in tre poli: Trulli/Valle d’Itria (sud-barese), Nord barese/nuova Provincia Barletta-Andria-Trani e area Salentina (provincia di Lecce). Rappresenta un settore importante sia a livello regionale che a livello nazionale, visto che si stima che, in provincia di Bari, si produca il 65% dell’abbigliamento per bambino e il 60-70% degli abiti da sposa “made in Italy”.

Prima della crisi del 2008 la Banca d’Italia aveva stimato il valore aggiunto del settore moda in circa un miliardo di euro, un dato che ha rappresentato il 15% del valore aggiunto totale del manifatturiero regionale.

La Puglia è inoltre la quarta Regione in Italia per numero di addetti nel settore calzaturiero e la prima nel mezzogiorno.

Ci fa un quadro di questa realtà Salvatore Toma, presidente della sezione Moda di Confindustria Taranto e referente per la Puglia per SMI. Presidente, qual è la geografia industriale del tessile pugliese?

Abbiamo l’abbigliamento a Martinafranca, con la specializzazione del capospalla sia per l’uomo che per la donna. Tradizionalmente le aziende erano façonniste, negli ultimi c’è stato uno spostamento sulla produzione di brand propri o in licenza, che oggi riguarda circa il 10% della forza

Salvatore Toma with Anna Romagnoli, GM of Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong companies were mostly outsourced garment manufacturers, but in the past few years they have been increasingly focusing on the production of their own brands or under license, which accounts for 10% of the district’s labour market. Women’s and teenager leisurewear and T-shirt manufacturers are located in Barletta. Casarano specializes in the production of top-quality embroidery, 80% of which is designed for womenswear. Wedding fashion, both men’s and women’s, and childrenswear is produced in Putignano, where the big brands’ license holders are based.

What is the Apulian textile districts’ current state of health?

The 2008 crisis led to the shutdown of many factories and only now we are beginning to see some signs of recovery. Some sectors suffered more than others. Putignano, for instance, saw a drop in the number of formalwear manufacturers. The whole Italian market is suffering from a drop in demand, which is what the national government is currently working on. Recently, there have been some major investments to make our companies attractive to the big brands. For about one year, we have been collaborating with Italy’s official representatives to increase exports. Apulia’s spearheads are tourism, food and fashion: three sectors that are the driving force behind Apulia’s economy.

What do the associations and national government do in actual fact to support Apulian entrepreneurs?

With the help of the regional government, we will be meeting 35/40 Asian companies in September. But we are also working “from the inside out”, for instance, in the training field, by establishing a communication channel with local junior high schools in step with the area’s requirements. We are working with local universities to promote courses responding to the needs of our entrepreneurs and to support the generational change of both workers and managers. We collaborate with the national Confederation of Italian Industry and have joined the 4.Manager Project, which aims to train and support Italy’s management class.

What is the common line of all these initiatives and activities?

We cannot work only at the local level to achieve the district’s success, so the collaboration with SMI and Confindustria Moda is more than welcome.

A Putignano c’è l’abbigliamento per sposi, sia uomo che donna, e quello per bambino, soprattutto aziende licenziatarie di grandi brand.

Qual è lo stato di salute dei distretti tessili pugliesi?

La crisi del 2008 ha comportato tante chiusure e solo oggi si cominciano a rivedere miglioramenti. Alcuni comparti hanno risentito più di altri: Putignano, per esempio, ha visto un calo delle aziende dedicate all’abbigliamento per cerimonia. In particolare il mercato italiano è in contrazione, per questo le istituzioni stanno lavorando. Da alcuni mesi ci sono stati investimenti per rendere appetibili le nostre aziende ai grandi brand, da circa un anno ci stiamo impegnando in collaborazione con le istituzioni per aumentare l’export. Le punte di diamante della Puglia sono il turismo, il food e la moda: tre settori che si trainano l’un l’altro e che sono il motore dell’economia pugliese.

In cosa si concretizza questo impegno delle associazioni e delle istituzioni a favorire l’imprenditoria pugliese?

A settembre con la Regione abbiamo organizzato un incoming di 35/40 aziende dall’Asia. Ma lavoriamo anche ‘da dentro’, per esempio sul fronte della formazione: da settembre 2017 abbiamo un dialogo con le scuole medie per favorire un orientamento ragionato e in linea con le esigenze del territorio. Ma lavoriamo anche con l’Università per creare dei corsi adeguati alle necessità della nostra imprenditoria e per sostenere il ricambio generazionale, sia dei lavoratori che della classe manageriale. La collaborazione è anche con Confindustria nazionale, in particolare abbiamo aderito al progetto 4.Manager, il percorso che forma e supporta la classe manageriale italiana.

Qual è la linea comune di tutte queste iniziative ed attività?

Di certo non si può più ragionare a livello locale per raggiungere il successo del distretto, ben venga allora la collaborazione con SMI, ben venga Confindustria Moda.

Astrovigorè’s revolution Fil-3,. la rivoluzione targata Astrovigorè

A yarn that aroused interest, a lot of color cards ending up in the hands and on the desks of customers and many custom-made twisted creations.

And the product proves to be suitable for both clothing and upholstery. Barely four months after its introduction, Astrovigorè, the machinery which could revolutionize the production of fancy yarns and fabrics,- created by the joining of forces of Giacinto Gelli, the owner of Fil-3, Lucio Nocentini, a technician who attended the Buzzi school in the sixties, and engineer Riccardo Magnolfi- is now operational and is giving the first successful results.

Astrovigorè is a machinery which can be applied to all kinds of assortments and which, after four years of study, research and tests, is progressing along the tortuous path towards the patent, already requested and expected to be issued in late summer.

The starting point is carding: the three “inventors” have designed an attachment that improves the carding process, in terms of both quality and fancy designs. They were inspired by the sight of the Vinicunca, a mountain in Peru on which the mineral sediments of millions of years have created a set of seven different colors. The successful attempt was that of building a machinery that could produce a multicolored yarn to make an endless range of fancy fabrics. The attachment was made in Prato before being tested on a yarn assortment from a Pratese spinning mill. “The attachment- says Giacinto Gelli, the owner of Fil-3 who will patent Astrovigorè- could change the way of producing fancy fabrics. The machinery makes strips in variable sizes and even in different materials by, for instance, pairing alpaca, mohair and cashmere and it’s possible to have slub fabrics, mélange e Malfilé effects. The attachment can be developed to adapt to different machines and is suitable for assortments in all sizes. For the time being, we are focusing on weaving products, but it can be applied to knitwear as well and, since it is used to make non-basic items in different and variable colors and patterns, the production is targeted at the medium-high market segment”. After the Milano Unica and PV shows, if things keep going as successful as expected, a second Astrovigorè machine could be set up. With the patent and another machine, the attachment would be launched on the market.

Un filo che ha suscitato interesse, tante cartelle finite nelle mani e sulle scrivanie dei clienti e numerose personalizzazioni. E il prodotto è stato interessante sia per l’abbigliamento che per l’arredamento.

A meno di quattro mesi dalla sua presentazione Astrovigorè, il macchinario che potrebbe rivoluzionare il modo di fare filati e tessuti fantasia creato dall’unione di forze di Giacinto Gelli, titolare di Fil-3, Lucio Nocentini, tecnico scuola Buzzi anni ’60, e l’ingegnere Riccardo Magnolfi, è già entrato in funzione portando i primi risultati.

Astrovigorè è un macchinario da applicare su ogni tipo di assortimento che, dopo quasi quattro anni di studio, ricerca e prove, ha iniziato il tortuoso cammino verso il brevetto, già richiesto e atteso per la fine dell’estate. La base di partenza è la cardatura: i tre ideatori hanno pensato ad un accessorio per migliorar il processo, sia in qualità che in fantasia e l’ispirazione è arrivata guardando la creatività della natura sulla Vinicunca, la montagna peruviana sulla quale sedimenti di pietre e minerali naturali hanno creato striature di sette colori diversi. Il tentativo, risucito, è stato quello di creare un macchinario capace di realizzare un filo a più colori che portasse alla creazione di tessuti fantasia con una gamma infinita.

L’accessorio è nato interamente in un’officina pratese prima di essere applicato per le prove definitive su un assortimento di una filatura, anche questa pratese. “Questo accessorio – dice Giacinto Gelli, che con la Fil-3 brevetterà Astrovigorè – potrebbe cambiare il modo di produrre tessuti fantasia. Possono essere prodotte strisce di grandezza variabile ed anche di materiale diverso, abbinando ad esempio alpaca, mohair e cashmere e si possono ottenere effetti bottonati, mélange e malfilè. L’accessorio è sviluppabile per più macchinari e adatto ad assortimenti di tutte le grandezze. Per ora pensiamo ad un prodotto per tessitura ma si può fare anche per maglieria ed essendo un articolo non basico, con caratteristiche di variazione per effetti cromatici e disunitezza, la fascia di riferimento è medio-alta”.

Dopo Milano Unica e Première Vision, se le ‘rose’ viste in questi mesi fioriranno, Astrovigorè potrebbe essere replicato. Con il brevetto ed un secondo esemplare il percorso dell’accessorio si completerebbe con il lancio definitivo.

Fadis, an 'italian champion' Fadis, un 'campione italiano'

Fadis is among the 500 Italian companies out of the over one million and 200 thousand firms researched by Corriere della Sera and classified as “Champions” of the “Made in Italy”, those which have not suffered from the crisis and have actually benefited from it by investing in research, development, business management and markets. The research was based on the analysis of the companies’ increase in sales (100% per Fadis), EBITDA, leverage and net financial position, which had to lie within very strict parameters.

In order to achieve such a goal, Fadis, owned by the same family since its establishment in 1960, has cemented its position as a leading company in the production of precision cone-winding machines, rewinders, soft winders, assembly winders, hank to cone winders, reeling machines, spooling machines and intermingling machines for the processing of any kind of yarn, from cotton, wool and silk to artificial and synthetic fibers, mixed fibers, intermingled yarns and fancy yarns.

Fadis was the first company in the world to introduce the air covering technology in 1987, the only 100% electronic ply tension control system- Tens Control-, the only density control and regulating system- On Line density-, and the motorized rewinding machine Sincro Rfm Sw for Packages, Fapp, Muff and Hanks in 2001. In 2007, the company presented the FAPP technology with the introduction of the Sincro M machine, and the constructional philosophy called “open platform”. The company has the whole production based in Italy and works with 95% Italian suppliers: flexibility in meeting the customers’ needs, guarantee of total quality, checks and tests and the most prestigious certifications, including origin and 100% made-in-Italy quality, are the company’s strengths.

Fadis’ plans for the future include reorganizing the company in terms of increased digitization to seize the opportunities offered by Industry 4.0.

Per raggiungere questo traguardo Fadis, di proprietà della stessa famiglia sin dalla sua fondazione nel 1960, è rimasta l'azienda leader nella produzione di roccatrici, focacciatrici, binatrici, dipanatrici, aspatrici, rocchettatrici e interlacciatrici per la lavorazione di qualsiasi tipo di filato quali cotone, lana, seta, fibre sintetiche, artificiali, fibre miste, filati intrecciati e filati fantasia.

Prima nel mondo a presentare la tecnologia dell’interlacciatura ad aria nel 1987, l’unico sistema di controllo della tensione del filo interamente elettronico – Tens Control, l’unico sistema di controllo e regolazione della densità – On Line density, la roccatrice con deroulatore motorizzato per FAPP/Muff/Matasse/ Rocche – Sincro Rfm Sw nel 2001.

A 70-year-long history Rifinizione Vignali: una storia lunga 70 anni

Rifinizione Vignali began operating in 1947, when Silvio Vignali took his first steps as entre-preneur by teaselling blankets using strictly artisan methods. In the years 1954-55, with Silvio’s determined and dynamic son Ivo – the current president of the board of directors- joining the company, Rifinizione Vignali changed and expanded its production range and processing methods. In addition to new finishing treatments of fine and innovative fabrics, in particular, upholstery fabrics which had not been produced in the Prato area until then, the company became highly specialized in the finishing of acrylic carpets and faux fur coats.

Upon Silvio’s death in 1961, Ivo upgraded the entire machinery fleet at the company’s cur-rent headquarters. In 1973, a new dyeing mill, Ma-Vi, was started, adding to the one operat-ing within Rifinizione Vignali. Over the years, the company further expanded its activity, soon becoming well-known not only in the Prato area, but also across the country and abroad. Today, the new-generation members of the family, Barbara and Silvia, work by their father Ivo’s side at the head of Rifinizione Vignali and Ma-Vi. Over the years, Rifinizione Vignali has become highly specialized in the finishing of velvet and upholstery fabrics, quickly building up a base of regular customers. The company currently employs 60 people and is greatly committed to research on new technologies and improvement of processing and service quality.

L'attività della Rifinizione Vignali ha origine nel 1947 quando Silvio Vignali mosse i primi passi di impren-ditore con iniziative prettamente artigianali, limitate alla garzatura di coperte Negli anni ’54/’55, con l’inserimento sempre più determinato e dinamico del figlio Ivo Vignali, attuale presidente del Consiglio di amministrazione, l’azienda cambia gradualmente tipologia di tessuti, ampliando e potenziando la primiti-va attività artigianale. Alle nuove idee legate al finissaggio di tessuti qualificati ed innovativi soprattutto su articoli per arredamento, che nell’area pratese non erano stati fino ad allora prodotti, si aggiungono le lavorazioni di finissaggio di tappeti di acrilico e pellicce ecologiche.

Dopo la morte di Silvio nel ’61, Ivo rinnova l’intero parco macchine nell’attuale sede, nel 1973 viene fondata una nuova Tintoria Ma-Vi, che affiancherà quella interna della Rifinizione Vignali. Prosegue la ricerca di nuove specializzazioni che rendono la Rifinizione Vignali sempre più qualificata e apprezzata non solo nel comprensorio pratese, ma anche a livello nazionale ed europeo.

Oggi il ricambio generazione ha già i volti di Barbara e Silvia, che affiancano il padre Ivo alla guida della Rifinizione Vignali e della Ma-Vi. Sono ormai diversi anni che la Rifinizione Vignali si è specializzata nei velluti e tessuti da arredamento adeguandosi alle esigenze del mercato e servendo clienti consolidati negli anni. Ad oggi l'azienda conta oltre 60 dipendenti ed è fortemente impegnata nella ricerca di nuove tecnologie e nel miglioramento della qualità dei processi e dei servizi.

Do you think that the time you devote to work is too much but not enough? Do you have very little time for lunch break but you don’t want to give up on taste? Or, more simply, do you just want to enjoy the cities hosting the textile show you’re attending without spending hours seated at a table?

The answer to all these questions is “street food”, which is much more than a passing fad and can be good and top-quality at the same time, but is often hidden in markets or along streets that are usually ignored by tourists and businessmen alike.

Our small guide to street food starts in Florence with a list, far from comprehensive as usual, of the best places where you can stop to buy food and enjoy it while walking to the trade show or to visit other sights. Antico Vinaio (74 Via dei Neri), located just steps away from Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery, is known for its schiacciata bread buttered with Pecorino cheese or artichoke cream and stuffed with sbriciolona from Montespertoli, in addition to a number of traditional crostini. Fiaschetteria Nuvoli (15 Piazza dell’Olio) is a wine shop established 212 years ago: the must-tries are ribollita, crostini with liver pâté and tripe. At I Fratellini (via dei Cimatori 38/r), who are Armando and Michele, you cannot miss the warm and crisp panini stuffed with prosciutto or finocchiona and goat’s milk cheese. Last but not least, Procacci, (64/r Via de’ Tornabuoni), well known for its truffled sandwiches. At this delicatessen established in 1885, all specialties are truffle-based and the interiors are Art-Nouveau style.

With the Milano Unica show moving to Rho, exhibitors and visitors might have been deprived of the pleasure of taking a walk downtown Milan.

However, for those who are able to set aside some time to have a bite to eat downtown, there is a wealth of options to suit all tastes. In the Via Sarpi and Chinatown area, we recommend a stop at number 27, where the Chinese meat omelets and pork and vegetarian ravioli sell like hot cakes. You will recognize this small joint by the queue outside. Tutti Fritti (18 Corso di Porta Ticinese) offers traditional zucchini blossoms filled with salt cod, meatballs and vegetables with all kinds of sauces to choose from. Located on the same street, at number 77, is MamaStreat, which prepares delicious Mexican street food such as tacos, burritos and nachos. Classic hot dogs are found at Hambistro (13 Via Savona), along with avocado toasts and veggie hamburgers. If you have a healthy appetite, you can order the hot dog in two versions: Nord Do (Greek yoghurt and horseradish sauce,

Pensate che il tempo dedicato al lavoro sia troppo ma anche che non sia mai abbastanza? Hai poco tempo per la pausa pranzo ma non vuoi rinunciare al gusto? Oppure più semplicemente vuoi goderti le città che ospitano la fiera tessile a cui partecipi senza passare ore seduto ad un tavolo? La risposta a tutte queste domande è lo ‘street food’, molto più che una moda del momento con gusto e qualità che vanno di pari passo ma che spesso sono nascosti nei mercatini o lungo strade percorse a passo veloce tanto dai turisti quanto dagli uomini d’affari. La nostra mini guida inizia da Firenze con una selezione, come sempre non esaustiva, dei posti migliori dove fermarsi a comprare cibo da gustare passeggiando verso gli stand della fiera o i luoghi turistici. All’Antico Vinaio (via dei Neri 74) è a due passi da Palazzo Vecchio e dalla Galleria degli Uffizi, è rinomato per la schiacciata con crema di pecorino o crema di carciofi con sbriciolona di Montespertoli oltre ai più svariati crostini. Alla Fiaschetteria Nuvoli (piazza dell’Olio 15) la mescita del vino esiste da 212 anni: da assaggiare la ribollita, i crostini con i fegatini e la trippa. Da I Fratellini (via dei Cimatori 38/r), Armando e Michele, il top sono i panini caldi e croccanti al prosciutto crudo o con la finocchiona e il caprino. Infine Procacci, (via de’ Tornabuoni, 64/r), noto per i panini tartufati. In questa gastronomia fondata nel 1885 tutte le specialità sono legate alla lavorazione del tartufo. Arredi ancora in stile Liberty.

Lo spostamento, ormai assimilato, di Milano Unica a Rho ha privato forse qualche espositore e qualche visitatore delle passeggiate in centro, all’ombra della Madonnina. Ma non sono pochi coloro che comunque riescono a ritagliarsi qualche momento per uno spuntino in città, dove le offerte sono infinite e con i sapori di tutto il mondo. Chi è dalle parti di via Sarpi può fare un salto nella Chinatown pedonale e fermarsi al numero 27, dove le omelette cinesi a base di carne ed i ravioli di maiale e vegetariani vanno a ruba. Il piccolo locale si riconosce dalla fila di clienti che arriva in strada. Da Tutti Fritti (corso di Porta Ticinese 18) si trovano fiori di zucca classici al baccalà, polpette e verdure con varie salse a disposizione. Stessa via, ma al numero 77, per il cibo di strada messicano di MamaStreat che offre delizie tex mex come tacos, burritos e nachos. I più classici hot dog si trovano da Hambistro (via Savona 13) insieme a Avocado Toast e hamburger veggie. Chi ha molta fame può ordinare l’hot dog in due varianti: Nord Do (Salsa di yogurt greco e rafano, wurstel Weisswurst, cetriolini sottaceto, cipollotto, ravanello, germogli di barbabietole) e lo SpicyGod (maionese al sesamo, wurstel Frankfurter, peperoni arancioni saltati, porro fritto).

RIGENERAZIONE DI MATERIE PRIME TESSILI

COM.I.STRA produce da oltre 60 anni la famosa lana meccanica di Prato, ovvero la fibra ottenuta dal riciclo di tessuti di lana e dai ritagli di maglieria sia nuovi che usati.

It is nearly impossible to talk about street food in London without mentioning food markets, in particular, the Borough Market, a cornucopia of every kind of aroma and flavor just steps away from the London Bridge Station. Having to choose from an endless list of offerings, we go for the meat of Boston Sausage: 262 years of history and an unbeatable range of hot dogs, sausage hamburgers and quiches. Mother Clucker (Elys Yard@ The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane) is definitely a place to keep in mind in December, for the winter Denim Première Vision event will be held there. But you can give it a try during the London Textile Fair as well by tasting the double-fried chicken and Cajun fries. At Camden Lock, for the homesick Italians in the city we recommend Mr. Piadina, whose mozzarella cheese, prosciutto and tomatoes come straight from Italy to make the real Romagna piadina. When it comes to pizza, the go-to destination is the Old Spitalfields Market (Brusfield Street) for Sud Italia: wood-burning oven, the use of top-quality ingredients, every single step of traditional pizza preparation, a few tables among the market stalls.

A comprehensive list of street food joints in Paris would include hundreds of names, so you’ll have to forgive us for narrowing it down to a few mouth-watering options. Frenchie To Go (9 rue du Nil, Opera area) is best-known for its sandwiches: we recommend the Pulled Pork (smoked pork, barbecue sauce and coleslaw) and the Reuben (pastrami, Westcomb cheddar and salad). Le rouleau de Printemps is a Vietnamese restaurant at non-Parisian prices: the must-try dish is noodles with roast meat, fresh herbs, peanuts, fried garlic and beef stock. For a quick but delicious sandwich, La Pointe du Groin (8 Rue de Belzunce, near the Gare du Nord), where bread is always warm and fragrant. The house specialty is galette-saucisse, which is a hot sausage coated with mustard and salted butter and wrapped in a type of crepe. From Tel Aviv to Paris : Miznon (22 Rue des Ecouffes) brought Israeli cuisine to the streets of Paris: the signature dish is pita, served with fish, vegetables and legumes. And to end on a sweet note, Maison du Chou (7 Rue de Fustenberg), where cream puffs are filled before your very eyes with a variety of flavors including custard, vanilla and chocolate.

Parlare di cibo da strada a Londra senza citare i mercatini è praticamente impossibile, così come lo è farlo senza iniziare dal Borough Market, il regno dei sapori e degli odori a due passi dalla London Bridge Station. Dovendo scegliere un solo piatto tra le centinaia offerte in quel luogo andiamo sulla carne del Boston Sausage: 262 anni di storia e un’offerta di hot dog, hamburger di salsiccia e torte salate imbattibile. A Camden Lock c’è Mr. Piadina, che si rifornisce di mozzarella, prosciutto e pomodori in Italia, salvaguardando il gusto della specialità romagnola. Per la pizza invece la tappa da non mancare è quella del furgoncino azzurro di Sud Italia all’Old Spitalfields Market (Brusfield Street): forno a legna, preparazione e ingredienti da pizzeria d’eccellenza, qualche tavolo a disposizione tra le varie bancarelle del mercato.

Anche per lo street food Parigi obbliga ad una selezione tra centinaia di nomi e sicuramente qualche luogo imperdibile mancherà all’appello. Molti sapori e buon pane da Frenchie To Go (rue du Nil 9, zona Opera), noto per sandwich: consigliato il Pulled pork fatto con maiale affumicato, salsa barbecue e insalata di cavolo, ed il Reuben fatto con pastrami, Westcomb cheddar e insalata. Oriente e spezie da Le rouleau de Printemps (rue Tourtille 42 a Belleville), ristorante vietnamita a prezzi non parigini: il Bo Bun, ossia noodles con carne arrosto, erbette fresche, arachidi, aglio fritto, brodo di carne va per la maggiore. Per un panino tanto veloce quanto buono c’è La Pointe du Groin (rue de Belzunce 8, vicino alla Gare du Nord) dove il pane è spesso caldo e fragrante. La specialità è la saucisse galette, un tortino di salsiccia con senape e burro salato. Da Tel Aviv a Parigi: Miznon (rue des Ecouffes 22) ha portato la cucina israeliana in strada nella Ville Lumière: il piatto forte è la pita, servita a base di pesce, di verdura e di legumi. E visto che non abbiamo parlato di dolci… dulcis in fundo. Quello della Maison du Chou (rue de Fustenberg 7), il regno del bignè alla crema, alla vaniglia, al cioccolato e in molti altri gusti.

Etica: the start-up born from Etica: la start up che nasce da COM.I.STRA within COM.I.STRA In May 2018, COM.I.STRA established a new business division, Etica, a start-up company that deals with eco-design, that is, the production and selling of garments made from old recycled clothing which, when worn out, will continue to be recycled again to make new fabrics. The company goes beyond the production of regenerated fabrics, a processing technique typical of the Prato area, because it is based on the concept of recycling over and over again according to the circular economy model.

It is the company’s latest development, of which Fabrizio Tesi is very proud. He is at the helm of COM.I.STRA alongside his sister Cinzia, but he is also the president of the young Italian Recycled Textiles Association, which seeks to draw the lawmaker’s attention to the circular economy system. And it is no chance that this initiative was born in Prato, which has been committed to smart recycling solutions for nearly two centuries.

COM.I.STRA specializes in the production of regenerated wool and was established back in 1951. Today, it is a full-cycle production company unique of its kind, which recycles five million kilograms of rags into top-quality fibers every year. In May 2018, COM.I.STRA, along with other partners, started Etica, which has already produced the first 300 items for the launching of the product, sold online through a platform with the brand Esketic. All items are made of wool: warm winter men’s and women’s coats and accessories such as scarves, caps and backpacks, made by using the COM.I.STRA chain, which comes full circle by selling these finished products.

COM.I.STRA ha da maggio una costola assolutamente virtuosa, si tratta di Etica una start up che si occupa di eco design, ossia della produzione e della vendita di capi per abbigliamento realizzati dal riciclo di abiti usati e prodotti nell’ottica, quando arriveranno a fine vita, di essere nuovamente e facilmente riciclati per realizzare nuovi tessuti. Si va quindi oltre la rigenerazione dei tessuti, attività tipica pratese, perché si ricicla e si progetta già pensando ad un nuovo ciclo di vita, secondo il concetto di Economia Circolare.

E’ una novità di cui parla orgoglioso Fabrizio Tesi, al timone di COM.I.STRA insieme alla sorella Cinzia, ma anche presidente della giovane Associazione Tessile Riciclato Italiana, un’associazione che ha nella sua mission anche di richiamare il legislatore all’attenzione per un’economia circolare. E non è un caso che queste iniziative nascano proprio a Prato, che da quasi 2 secoli è esempio di riciclo intelligente.

COM.I.STRA è un’azienda specializzata nella rigenerazione di materie prime tessili in lana fondata nel 1951, presenta un ciclo completo, una realtà unica al mondo nel suo genere, che trasforma ogni anno cinque milioni di chilogrammi di stracci in materiale fibroso di altissimo livello. Da COM.I.STRA ed altri soci a maggio è nata Etica, che ha realizzato ad oggi i primi 300 capi per il lancio del prodotto, che saranno venduti on line attraverso una piattaforma con il marchio Esketic. I capi sono di lana invernale: cappotti uomo e donna, accessori come sciarpe, berretti e zaini. Tessuti che tengono caldo, realizzati utilizzando la filiera COM.I.STRA, che con questa vendita di capi finiti chiude il cerchio.
