PORTA VENEZIA, THE VIBRANT HEART OF MILAN
A melting pot of cultures, elegance and creativity: where to experience the city’s true essence
Porta Venezia is known for its historical buildings, many of which are over 400 years old, and its large, colorful public gardens, including the Villa Reale Park and the Natural Science Museum From here, Corso Buenos Aires begins, offering a mix of well-known brands and exclusive boutiques, perfect for trendy shopping. For an authentic risotto alla Milanese, make sure to stop at Da Ilia
There is a place in Milan where Art Nouveau-style façades alternate with queer murals, where you can sip a Negroni Sbagliato cocktail at the bar that invented it and, just a few meters away, taste injera and zighinì at an Eritrean restaurant. This is Porta Venezia, the neighborhood that best represents the city’s multifaceted soul: elegant and pop, bourgeois and rebellious, traditional and openly inclusive. Here, Milan shows itself for what it truly is: a European metropolis, vibrant and ever-changing, yet capable of maintaining a unique identity. Porta Venezia is a creativity workshop, where different cultures, languages and lifestyles meet every day.

Inside, there are two veritable institutions: the Civic Museum of Natural History, where dinosaur skeletons make children dream, and the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium, which invites visitors to gaze at the stars downtown Milan. Not far away, on Via Palestro, the Modern Art Gallery (GAM) houses masterpieces by Canova, Manet and Pellizza da Volpedo, while the nearby PAC – Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea hosts avant-garde exhibitions and international projects. Strolling in this area also means stepping into another dimension: that of the Milanese Art-Nouveau style. Casa Galimberti, with its facade decorated in polychrome ceramics, and Casa Campanini, with its famous
wrought-iron gate, are two of the finest examples of this elegant style that has become Porta Venezia’s trademark.
THE UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE OF VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO
Hidden amongst magnolias and wisteria, Villa Necchi Campiglio is one of the most charming residences in the city. Protected by FAI, it tells the story of a bourgeois family in Milan in the 1930S. Its elegant rooms and the garden with a swimming pool, a rare privilege at the time, evoke a world of understated elegance. Today, in summertime, the villa comes alive

ART AND CULTURE
Porta Venezia is also a contemporary art district. Located on Corso Venezia is the Luigi Rovati Foundation, where Etruscan art interacts with modern art on a journey that unites the past and the avant-garde. Here you can admire works by Lucio Fontana, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Arturo Martini,
and then treat yourself to a break at the bistro or to a gourmet dinner created by chef Andrea Aprea. A litle further on, the MEET – Digital Culture Center brings the conversation into the present, by exploring the languages of the future: virtual reality, AI, science and art intertwine in an Art Nouveau-style building converted into a digital workshop.
DRINKS AND SHOPPING
When evening falls, Porta Venezia lights up. Between Via Lecco and Via Melzo, bars and cocktail bars welcome the LGBTQIA+ community and anyone who wants to experience

SECRET MILAN
The hidden church of San Siro and the tragic history of Villa Triste
text by Martina Olivieri
Hidden among the quiet streets of Milan’s San Siro neighbourhood there’s a small church that’s litle-known yet extremely interesting: the Church of San Siro alla Vepra at Via Masaccio 20. The diminutive building is extraordinarily beautiful; however, this is a story with an unhappy ending. But let’s start at the beginning. Once upon a time, San Siro was a medieval church standing alone in the Milanese countryside, to the west of the present-day Olona river, previously known as the Vepra (hence the name of the church). The earliest information we have dates back to the ninth century, when the church and the surrounding land belonged to the Benedictine order. In 1483 the property was bought by the Pecchi

family, who owned it until the mid-nineteenth century. Today all that remains of the original building is the apse, embellished with magnificent frescoes and sumptuous decorations. The former owners decided to incorporate the church within a private home, and demolished the front section to fit the new building. In 1927 the architect Temistocle Fossati
designed the villa that still adjoins the church. In 1944, during the Nazi occupation, the villa was requisitioned by Pietro Koch, leader of the notorious Banda Koch, and it unfortunately became known as Villa Triste – “sad villa” – because of the torture inflicted on political prisoners in the basement. The atrocities commited here aroused indignation in the neighbourhood and even led to the intervention of Cardinal Schuster. When the story came to light afer the war, Fossati no longer wished to live in the villa, and donated it to the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate, who own it to this day. The church is free to visit, subject to request, and it really is worth a stop: the cellars, once a place of suffering, are now home to the convent’s kitchens and service areas.

CHRISTMAS IN MILAN
The enchantment of the holidays, with street markets, theatre, skating rinks and pure magic
text by Martina Olivieri
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
When winter comes to Milan, the city turns into a glitering stage where art, tradition and wonder come together in perfect harmony. From Galleria Vitorio Emanuele II to the shopping streets, from theatres to city-centre parks, Christmas in the Lombardy capital is a sophisticated and captivating affair that wins the hearts of adults and children alike.
THE FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE
In Milan, the official start of the Christmas season is the two-day celebration of Saint Ambrose and the Immaculate Conception on the 7th and 8th December. This is the moment when the city comes to life: light displays, events and concerts kick off the year’s most eagerly-awaited season. Around the magnificent Sforza Castle there’s the historic Oh Bej! Oh Bej!, Christmas market, enliven-
ing the city with the scents of roast chestnuts and mulled wine, hand-made decorations and toys, and traditional flavours. In the city centre, Galleria Vitorio Emanuele II is the brightly-lit heart of the festivities. Under its iconic glass dome, the great Christmas tree shines with thousands of lights, reflected in the windows of elegant boutiques. And from here, the magic spreads outwards to the shopping streets – Via Monte Napoleone and Corso Vitorio Emanuele – which gleam like jewels in the winter sky.

All proceeds from admissions will be donated to Fondazione Mente, which supports children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly those on the autism spectrum. A heartfelt way to turn Christmas into a meaningful gesture of sharing and generosity.
CHRISTMAS AT THE THEATRE
Christmas in Milan is not only lights and markets, it’s also culture and spectacle. On 7 December, following age-old tradition, Teatro alla Scala opens its opera season
with its famous Prima della Scala, an event that blends sophistication and high art. This season’s most keenly anticipated dates include 26 December at Teatro degli Arcimboldi for a concert by the Dream Gospel Choir from Harlem, one of the best-loved choirs on the international gospel scene. Their powerful and emotion-packed performance will include enduring classics like Amazing Grace, Oh Happy Day and When the Saints Go Marching In, for a concert that promises energy, spirituality and pure engagement. From 19 to 21 December, Balleto di Milano presents The Nutcracker at the Giorgio Gaber
Theatre, in a new production with a certain Art Deco style: blue and gold scenery, 20s-inspired costumes and an elegance that lends a refined modern touch to Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. And from 18 to 21 December, Teatro Carcano presents A Christmas Carol, the acclaimed musical adaptation of Dickens’ novel, directed by Melina Pellicano with original music by Stefano Lori and Marco Caselle: a paean to generosity and the Christmas spirit that touches all ages.

Until 25 December, children can visit Father Christmas in his cosy wooden hut, take a photo with him and tell him their wishes. From 26 December it’s the turn of Mother Christmas to welcome children of all ages with stories and sweet treats; 6 January sees the arrival of the Befana (we recommend booking on the official web-
site villaggiodellemeraviglie.

Skates can be hired on the premises, and smaller children can rely on jolly support penguins as they take their first steps on the ice. The Christmas village is packed with atractions: Santa’s Sleigh, the Crazy Flying Sleds, Penguin Fishing, Journey to the North Pole, Climbing on Glaciers, the Elf Theatre with its puppet shows, the Snowflake Carousel and the Magic Christmas Tree. And for a delicious
break, there are plenty of street food stalls and the Christmas market, perfect for a snack or a handcrafed gif to take home.
Between walks and shows, Milan invites you to pause and savour its sweeter side. An afernoon among the boutiques and ateliers of Brera, a hot chocolate in one of the historic coffee shops, dinner at an award-winning restaurant where Italian Christmas tradition meets contemporary creativity: every experience becomes a precious memory. THE ART OF PANETTONE
Tips on choosing and serving the Milanese king of cakes
text by Teresa Favi
According to 18th-century philosopher Pietro Verri, Christmas in Milan was celebrated with a great bread cut by the head of the family. We know for certain that the first document to mention a “Christmas bread” dates back to 1599, when students at the Collegio Borromeo in Pavia were served a baked festive loaf containing buter, raisins and spices. However, one legend asserts that the first maestro of the panetone went by the name of Toni (hence the name, pan de Toni, over time becoming panatton or pane’tun), a pot boy in the kitchens of Ludovico il
Moro. Apparently one Christmas the head cook was not in a good frame of mind and burnt a seven-storey cake. To replace it, clever Toni mixed flour, egg yolks, sugar, buter, raisins and sultanas, orange zest, citron and vanilla. The masterpiece that emerged from the oven brought joy to the guests and reassurance to the chef. Legends apart, Panetone is to Milan as the Madonnina is to the spires of the cathedral. But how to recognise the best? The colour should be golden yellow and the consistency sof: if it returns to its original shape afer cuting a slice, it has been correctly proved. A good panetone should slip easily
out of its paper case and form a completely rounded dome. The air pockets should be elongated and evenly distributed, as is typical of natural, preservative-free products. So in a nutshell: the perfect rise, the highest quality ingredients and, obviously, freshness. Those are the basics. Outstanding proposals abound from the world of hotel patisserie, which today produces panetoni on par with the finest pastry shops. Stefano Trovisi, celebrating his first Christmas at the Four Seasons, unveils two delights: the Classic Panettone and the Limited Edition Mango & Apricot; Mandarin’s pastry chef Marco Pinna of-
THE PERFECT RISE, THE HIGHEST QUALITY
INGREDIENTS AND FRESHNESS.
THOSE ARE THE BASICS OF THE PERFECT PANETTONE
fers his traditional artisanal panetone in a limited edition (48-hour leavening), while Cesare Murzilli brings his sof, handmade classic panetonemade strictly with alpine butter - to Portrait Milano 10_11 for the third consecutive year. These excellent creations are quickly followed by the prestigious Panetone della Tradizione from the Grand Hotel et de Milan in collaboration with Gennaro Esposito, the Excelsior Hotel Gallia’s panetone (a result of over 56 hours of leavening and preparation), and the panetoni from Principe di Savoia and Casa Brera (miniaturized in a limited edition, conceived by Laila Gohar, the internation-
ally renowned artist who has long transformed food into visual language). In short, panetone has become a status symbol—and now it’s dressed by Milan’s top fashion brands. Refined and captivating packaging adorns the creations by Armani and Dolce&Gabbana (the later launching its Sicilian Orange Ciccopanetone), produced respectively by the award-winning Guido Gobino patisserie in Turin and Fiasconaro in Palermo. The only exception among all this Milan-based activity is the master of masters, Brescia-born Iginio Massari, the king of cakes. And these days you don’t need to travel far to find his traditional panetone, the
result of four provings and two different doughs (taking a total of 62 hours), sweetened with an amareto glaze, coarsely-chopped almonds and pearl sugar: in the Cathedral there’s a branch of his Pasticceria Veneta di Brescia. Here’s his advice for serving it: “Panetone should be served at room temperature and taken out of its paper case to avoid cuting the paper along with the slices and making a terrible mess. It should be cut with a bread knife, using slow, deep strokes and holding the knife parallel to the plate so that the air pockets are not crushed. The correct portion size is 100 grammes per person.”

THE ELEGANCE OF CONTRAST
The encounter of two creative minds: Emanuele Bicocchi x Pisa 1940
Some collaborations are the result of definite marketing strategies and plans. Others, instead, simply arise from friendly meetings. The later is the case of the Emanuele Bicocchi x Pisa 1940 limited collection: the result of a random conversation held in the Pisa 1940 flagship store in via Verri between Chiara Pisa, head of the historic Milanese company, and Emanuele Bicocchi, a designer with an unrestricted and non-conformist vision. The idea that came up from that meeting was simple, yet powerful: create a collection which would bring together two different worlds – the precision and refinement of Pisa 1940 and the contemporary energy of Bicocchi – in an unprecedented combination blend of gold and silver, strength and lightness, crafsmanship and experi-
mentation. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings are enhanced by the use of contrast: large sizes and precious stones, bold shapes and delicate details. The jewels in the

PRECISION AND REFINEMENT OF PISA 1940 MEET THE CONTEMPORARY ENERGY OF EMANUELE BICOCCHI
collection have been designed for those who see style as a form of personal expression rather than just an ornament. The philosophy of Pisa 1940 has always been the desire to build customer relationships
that go beyond the traditional relationship between store and customer. The meeting with Bicocchi further confirmed this atitude: a conversation turned into creation; a project shared between two worlds, two visions and two different stories – only apparently distant – which have become intertwined without becoming distorted. On the one hand, the timeless elegance of a company which has had a leading role in the watch-making and jewellery industry for over eighty years; on the other hand, the bold and cosmopolitan vision of a designer, who is always looking ahead and has given new aesthetic life to Italian crafsmanship, inspired by the underground style. Emanuele Bicocchi x Pisa 1940 is available exclusively in the Pisa 1940 flagship store in Via Verri or online at pisa1940.com
