Excellence in craft Everything in Florence is filled with the scent of history, ancient glamour and art. You just have to take a walk through the downtown alleys to take in the city’s Renaissance atmosphere, which is still so special and vivid. And the art of crafting, with its shops and workshops, its faces, its secrets handed down from father to son, from one generation to the next to this day, represents the highest expression of this tradition the whole world envies us. With the precious help of Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, we have photographed sixty-eight workshops and ateliers, trying to capture the beauty, the history and even the secrets behind them. That is how Firenze su misura. Craft Shopping Guide was born. A prêt-a-porter guide devoted to the city of Florence’s arts and crafts, from fashion to décor, from perfumery to leather goods, from pottery to lighting. All photos are accompanied by brief historical notes and practical information about how to reach and contact each business, at any time. Tutto a Firenze profuma di storia, di fascino antico, di arte. Basta fare una passeggiata e perdersi per i suoi vicoli del centro per respirare e lasciarsi avvolgere in quella atmosfera rinascimentale così unica e viva ancora oggi. E l’arte artigiana, con le sue botteghe e laboratori, i suoi volti, i suoi segreti tramandati di padre in figlio, di generazione in generazione fino ad oggi rappresenta una delle più forti espressioni di questa tradizione che tutto il mondo ci invidia. Noi, con la preziosa collaborazione di Four Seasons, siamo andati a fotografare sessantotto laboratori e atelier cercando di immortalarne le bellezza, di coglierne la storia e, perchè no, di rubarle qualche segreto. Così è nata Firenze su misura. Craft Shopping Guide, un vademecum prêt-à-porter dedicato alla realtà artigiana della nostra città, dalla couture al dècor, dalla profumeria alla pelle, passando per la ceramica e l’illuminazione. Ad accompagnare gli scatti, troverete brevi cenni storici e le informazioni pratiche per raggiungere e contattare ogni attività, in qualsiasi momento.

The skill of wood-working, that of assembling little tesserae of mosaic, of frescoing the interiors of palazzi with amazing trompe l’oeil images, of building instruments capable of sounding perfect notes: Florentine craftsmanship is indissolubly bound up with art, which becomes the matrix of a savoir faire that is passed down from one generation to the next. Just a couple of steps from the Ponte Vecchio, the craftsman Simone Fiordelisi continues the family tradition, creating tables, pictures, panels and small objects in marble decorated in mosaic or scagliola; he also makes to order and to the customer’s design. All the creations of Simone Fiordelisi – from the large marble tables to the small pictures with flowers – are one-off pieces made and decorated entirely by hand, the result of consummate expertise. The door that opens into the world of Clara Freschi is a haiku by J.L. Borges: “Obscurely/ books, prints, keys/ share my fate”. Thus we enter a universe of papers, books, drawings, photos, oriental works, screens and fans that Clara patently restores to their ancient splendour in a light-filled studio in Palazzo Ricasoli. The illustrious collaborations, and above all the works that have passed through Clara’s expert hands, are enough to intimidate the greatest experts in the world: from Rembrandt to Fontana, taking in Ottone Rosai, Telemaco Signorini, Giorgio Morandi, Giovanni Boldini and many others. After completing his studies at the Florence State Art Institute, in 1976 Stefano Ficalbi set up his own business seeking to combine work and passion. In his workshop in Via Romana in the old city centre of Florence, he carries out a range of projects, working with oil, tempera, fresco and trompe l’oeil techniques for private residences and top-bracket hotels all over the world. Drawing upon the Florentine art of the late Renaissance, he and his team recreate Tuscan views and landscapes of timeless charm, as well as inlaid marble floors that are authentic works of art. Terminati gli studi presso l’Istituto Statale d’Arte di Firenze, nel 1976 Stefano Ficalbi avvia la propria attività, impegnandosi a fondere passione e lavoro. Nel suo atelier, nel centro storico di Firenze, in via Romana, esegue progetti e lavori con tecniche a olio, tempera, affresco, trompe l’oeil per residenze private e hotel extra lusso in ogni parte del mondo. A unique space of passion for wood: decorations, frames, friezes, capitals and furnishings restored or faithfully reproduced to original models, following an ancient art. Marco Castorina, the current owner of the namesake shop, descends from a family of wood carvers and restorers who have treasured and passed down this trade since 1895. His workshop, also known as the “workshop of the five balls” after the frieze that hung over the entrance in Via di Santo Spirito at the turn of the century, is a casket of precious expertise where it seems as though time has stood still. Uno spazio unico di passione per il legno: decori, cornici, fregi, capitelli e mobili restaurati o riprodotti fedelmente su modelli originali, seguendo un’arte antica. Claudio Arezio began working as a luthier in 1979, under the guidance of the masters Igino Sderci and Roberto Ignesti. In his Florentine workshop he builds violins, violas and cellos, both modern and baroque, starting from the internal form as in the tradition of classical Italian luthiery. In 2001, on commission from the Accademia Gallery of Florence, he drew up the scientific catalogue of the famous collection of string instruments of the Medici Court. His instruments are played in the most important orchestras, and he also deals with the restoration and adjustment of instruments. Claudio Arezio inizia a occuparsi di liuteria nel 1979, sotto la guida dei maestri Igino Sderci e Roberto Ignesti. Nella sua bottega fiorentina costruisce violini, viole e violoncelli, moderni e barocchi, partendo dalla forma interna come nella tradizione della liuteria classica italiana. Nel 2001 ha eseguito, su incarico della Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, la catalogazione scientifica della famosa collezione di strumenti ad arco della Corte dei Medici. I suoi strumenti suonano nelle più prestigiose orchestre del mondo. Si occupa anche di restauro e messa a punto degli strumenti. Since 1950 the Ciulli brothers have been creating chandeliers, wall lamps, decor accessories and lampstands that bring together the expertise of craft workmanship and aesthetic research. Customers from Florence and abroad can combine the delight of a visit to this workshop with a tour of the ancient district of the ferrymen where it is situated. Specialised in glass mosaic and micromosaic from the end of the nineteenth century, the history of the Fratelli Traversari firm is studded with outstanding collaborations and one-off pieces. As a result of the ongoing quest for materials, evolving year after year, and the increasingly sophisticated craft expertise, the Traversari articles are authentic works of art created using three different techniques: Florentine hard stone commesso, micromosaic in enamelled glass with cut tesserae and micromosaic with spun tesserae. Specializzata in mosaico e micromosaico in vetro sin dalla fine dell’Ottocento, l’azienda Fratelli Traversari ha una storia fatta di collaborazioni eccellenti e pezzi unici. The bookbinding business of the Giannini family was set up by Pietro Giannini (1811 - 1882) who in 1856 opened a small shop in Piazza Pitti, where the craft firm still has its premises. Pietro Giannini was primarily a stationer, whereas his son Giulio (1853 – 1931) radically transformed the business, devoting himself to artistic bookbinding and the production of objects in leather. This was “Victorian” Florence, and the shop rapidly became a benchmark for wealthy English people who loved beautiful things. Today the activity of the ancient workshop is continued by Guido Junior and Maria. I Giannini, rilegatori del libro, iniziarono la loro attività con Pietro Giannini nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento quando questi, nel 1856, aprì un piccolo negozio in Piazza Pitti, attuale sede dell’azienda artigiana. Pietro Giannini era più che altro cartolaio, mentre suo figlio Giulio trasformò radicalmente il lavoro paterno, dedicandosi alla rilegatura artistica e alla produzione di oggetti in pelle. Era la Firenze “vittoriana” e il negozio diventò un punto di riferimento per inglesi facoltosi e amanti delle cose belle. Oggi continuano l’attività dell’antica Bottega, Guido Junior e Maria. Il Papiro boasts an important record: that of having been the only firm in Italy to re-propose paper objects – diaries, notebooks, frames, writing paper, visiting cards – made by hand using ancient techniques that have almost disappeared. The decision emerged from the sensitivity of the two owners – Francesco Giannini and Gianni Parenti – passionate connoisseurs of the Florentine craft tradition, aware of the fact that a product with these features of uniqueness and craftsmanship had a greater competitive advantage on the market. From 1976, the date of opening of the Florence shop, the company has constantly continued to grow even outside Tuscany, to the extent that it is now an authentic brand recognised at international level that maintains intact its original craft origin. Il Papiro vanta un importante primato: quello di aver riproposto, unica in Italia, oggetti di carta - agende, quaderni, cornici, carta da lettere, biglietti da visita - fatti a mano e che utilizzano tecniche antiche e quasi scomparse. Flaunting the title of Maestro Liutaio is a young American woman, Jamie Lazzara, who – despite a brilliant career as first violin decided instead to devote herself to the construction of these delightful objects. After a diploma from the Luthiery school of Cremona, Jamie decided to move to Italy, and in 1987 opened a workshop in the heart of Florence. In 1993 the great soloist, Itzhak Perlman, ordered a “Lazzara” violin, which was constructed copying every last detail from the original 1714 Stradivarius. This set the seal on Jamie’s achievement, and for over 20 years now she has been expertly constructing violins and cellos using maple or spruce with inlays in ebony and ivory. A fregiarsi del titolo di Maestro Liutaio è una giovane donna americana, Jamie Lazzara, che, nonostante una brillante carriera da primo violino ha preferito dedicarsi alla costruzione di questi oggetti charmant. Dopo il diploma alla scuola di Liuteria di Cremona, Jamie decide di trasferirsi in Italia e nel 1987 apre una bottega nel cuore storico di Firenze. Nel 1993 il grande solista Itzhak Perlman ordina un violino “Lazzara” che viene costruito copiando ogni dettaglio dello Stradivari Soil del 1714. E’ la definitiva consacrazione per Jamie, che ormai da più di 20 anni costruisce a regola d’arte violini e violoncelli con legno di acero o abete e intarsi in ebano e avorio. Jamie Lazzara

A rare example of expertise handed down from master to apprentice, just like in the ancient Florentine craft workshops. Vasco Cappuccini opened this workshop way back in 1925, and his only student, Lamberto Banchi, took over the business in 1946. Today, the company is run with passion by the latter’s son Duccio, a craftsman in bronze specialised in the creation of small decor accessories and decorative items, which can also be made to order. He is also an expert in the restoration of antique objects. Un raro esempio di lavoro tramandato da maestro ad allievo, come nelle più antiche botteghe artigiane fiorentine. Vasco Cappuccini aprì questo laboratorio nel lontano 1925 e il suo unico allievo, Lamberto Banchi, ha preso in mano l’attività nel ’46. Oggi l’azienda è portata avanti con passione dal figlio di Lamberto, Duccio, artigiano bronzista specializzato nella creazione di piccoli oggetti d’arredamento e articoli decorativi, dei quali effettua lavorazioni anche su ordinazione, oltre a curare il restauro di oggetti antichi. The location has been the same since 1908, in Via del Parione. The founder Alberto started the bookbinding activity in this corner of Florence, near Via de’Tornabuoni. Children and grand-children followed in his footsteps, handing down the passion for the age-old art of bookbinding from one generation to another, and expanded the business. Today, in addition to the bookbinding activity, the shop restores old books and makes personalized leather goods. L’indirizzo è rimasto invariato dal 1908, via del Parione. Il fondatore Alberto legava libri in questo angolo di Firenze vicino alla centralissima via de’ Tornabuoni. Figli e nipoti si sono succeduti in quest’arte antica, trasmettendo la passione di generazione in generazione e ampliando le competenze dell’azienda. In his workshop in Via dei Velluti, Renato Olivastri restores wood in its most elegant forms. Also an expert in polishing and in the restoration of the wooden elements of antique paintings, Renato is a master in the restoration of Boulle furnishings, where the inlays are made not of wood but of a variety of different materials, mainly brass and tortoiseshell, but also copper, pewter and silver. In addition to working as a restorer, Renato Olivastri also teaches furniture restoration, marquetry and the restoration of wooden panel paintings at various prestigious institutes in Italy and the rest of Europe. Nella sua bottega di via dei Velluti, Renato Olivastri restaura il legno nella sua forma eccelsa. Esperto anche nella lucidatura di questo materiale e nel recupero dei dipinti antichi per la parte lignea, Renato è un maestro del restauro dei mobili Boulle, nei quali gli intarsi in legno vengono sostituiti da materiali diversi, principalmente ottone e tartaruga, ma anche rame, peltro e argento. The career of Roberto Marrucci in the world of mosaic began at the age of 15, when he worked as an apprentice under the guidance of Giovanni Fiaschi. After his training in the ancient workshop, he decided to undertake the production of Florentine commesso, also known as Florentine mosaic, made from natural semi-precious stones; over the years he has also been engaged in passing on this ancient art. La carriera di Roberto Marrucci nel mondo del mosaico inizia a 15 anni, quando svolge un apprendistato presso la bottega di Giovanni Fiaschi. In a region where the production of ceramics is recorded from as far back as the 12th century, Florence became an undisputed leader from the beginning of the 15th century, when the Manufactories of Doccia began to produce their masterpieces with traditional floral decorations, the so-called majolica. Today, in the old heart of the city, secret caskets of artistry open the doors on a timeless world made up of innumerable styles and variations on the theme. In una regione dove la produzione di ceramiche è attestata sin dal XII secolo, Firenze diventò leader indiscussa di quest’arte dagli inizi del Quattrocento, quando le manifatture Doccia cominciarono a produrre i loro capolavori con decorazioni floreali tradizionali, le cosiddette Maioliche. His studio expresses the perfect synthesis of art and craftsmanship. Bruno Gambone, son of the father-master who opened this workshop in 1949, has been working intensively on his language since 1969, after several years spent in New York where he frequented artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. The workshop in Via Benedetto Marcello is a place where you can savour the intensity of his works. Ceramics and much else too: sculptures, objects and paintings that reflect a personal style drenched in that classic art that is a paradigm of his mode of operation. In the heart of the old city centre, the space extends over a room for display, one for restoration, the workshop and a room for finishing. The master craftsman Antonio can electrically transform any object, adding the finishing touch of the lampshade – this too to be customised on demand or made up in the traditional manner in fabric or parchment, precious kidskin. Once upon a time there was the then seventeen year-old Lorenzo Borgheresi, who from 1953 used brass, copper and coloured glass to produce the star lantern, the historic and most representative symbol of his work. After this other models were created, including the Veneziane and the Lampioni Fiorentini, or Florentine streetlamps, all in antique style and still in production. The reality of the historic name is pursued by his son Fabrizio and his son-in-law Stefano, embracing tradition in the new premises in Santo Spirito. The method of working is the same as it always was, while enhancing the elements of construction and restoration, all strictly and entirely by hand. C’era una volta il diciassettenne Lorenzo Borgheresi che nel 1953, attraverso l’uso di ottone, rame e vetro colorato, creò la lanterna a stella, un oggetto diventato oggi storico e rappresentativo del suo lavoro. In seguito realizzò modelli, come le Veneziane e i Lampioni Fiorentini, tutti in stile antico e ancora in produzione. La realtà dello storico nome è viva grazie al figlio Fabrizio e al genero Stefano che proseguono la tradizione nella nuova sede di Santo Spirito. The rest is a story made up of lamps and lampshades and other accessories, which can be made up in any material, from wood to ceramics, through to the most precious fabrics for the lampshades: all created by the expert hands of those who pursue the virtuous techniques of once upon a time. Guido Polloni opened his workshop in 1919. He was one of the first contemporary master glassmakers to create a series of artistic works ranging from classic production to elements of modern architecture. Polloni’s artistic legacy was taken up by his son-in-law, Sergio Papucci, who in 1984 became the new director of the glassworks, continuing the tradition of excellence of the workshop-studio. Production ranges from the retrieval of the classic techniques through to the research and experimentation of new techniques and forms, in addition to the restoration of antique glass. The fame of the glassworks has by now spread far beyond Italy, and it boasts increasingly intensive collaboration with the various Fine Arts Commissions. Nel 1919 Guido Polloni apre la sua bottega. E’ fra i primi maestri contemporanei a creare una serie di opere che spaziano dalla produzione classica all’architettura moderna. L’arte di Polloni viene fatta propria dal genero Sergio Papucci che nel 1984 diviene il direttore della vetreria, continuando l’eccellenza della bottega-studio: dal recupero della tradizione classica alla ricerca e sperimentazione di nuove tecniche e forme, oltre al restauro di vetrate antiche. He started designing and creating jewelry at the age of sixteen. He was one of the first to incorporate the principles of architecture and anatomy with contemporary jewelry. A selftaught man, Alessandro Dari has transformed his house in the heart of the San Niccolò neighborhood into a workshop, showroom and, since last summer, also a school: he teaches private classes for up to six students, to introduce them to the secrets behind his creations, true works of sculpture. Fifteen collections, equal to over six hundred pieces of jewelry, are on display in his atelier. Inizia a disegnare e creare gioielli all’età di 16 anni. Autodidatta, è uno dei primi a fondere i principi dell’architettura e dell’anatomia nel mondo della gioielleria contemporanea. Come nelle più tradizionali botteghe fiorentine la sua abitazione, nel cuore di San Niccolò, è anche laboratorio, showroom e dalla scorsa estate anche scuola: corsi privati di massimo sei allievi, per apprendere tutti i segreti delle sue creazioni, vere e proprie sculture. The shop was started in 1948 and it soon became the symbol of classic Florentine luxury jewelry. Then came the encounter with Japanese fashion, with the destructuring of shapes and with design and sculpture as sources of inspiration. What does an object mean? The message deeply rooted in ancient jewelry is delivered by Claudio Ranfagni’s contemporary style: his artwork is shown in the “contemporary jewelry section” of Florence’s Silver Museum, and in many art exhibitions on contemporary jewelry in Italy and abroad. Established in the mid-1600s by several noble Florentine families, the Antico Setificio has been in the San Frediano neighborhood since 1786. The fabrics are still woven on eighteenthcentury manually operated looms and nineteenth-century mechanical looms. The fabric patterns, kept in the company’s archives, include Renaissance damask, brocatelle, lampas and “filaticci”, used for both modern and classic furnishing. The silk factory still produces the “Ermisino” , a special kind of bright taffeta used in the past for clothing, today for drapery. Strictly hand dyeing, no chemical treatments. In 2010, Antico Setificio Fiorentino was taken over by fashion company Stefano Ricci, which ensured the factory’s future existence and continuity of crafting tradition in Florentine hands. Nato a metà del Seicento, dall’unione di alcune famiglie nobili fiorentine, dal 1786 l’Antico Setificio ha la sua sede nel quartiere di San Frediano; qui si lavora su telai a mano del 700 e telai meccanici dell’800. I disegni delle stoffe custoditi nell’Archivio storico comprendono damaschi del Rinascimento, broccatelli, lampassi e filaticci, utilizzati per l’arredo moderno e storico. Ancora oggi viene tessuto l’Ermisino, speciale tipo di taffettà particolarmente luminoso, usato in passato per l’abbigliamento, oggi per tendaggi. Ogni tintura è a mano, senza nessun trattamento chimico. Nel 2010 l’Antico Setificio Fiorentino è stato acquistato dall’azienda di moda Stefano Ricci la quale ne ha assicurato il futuro e la continuità della tradizione artigianale in mani fiorentine. The passion of Antonio, of Southern-Italian origins, for fashion design developed at an early age by being with his aunts at their embroidery school and with his mother’s dressmakers. Then he moved to Florence where he studied dressmaking techniques, the history of costume and the art of weaving. In 2000, he opened his first workshop and, in 2005, he moved to the current premises in Piazza Pitti. Antonio designs and creates by hand a hat collection and a small line of clothing. “I choose the material, which inspires me as I work with it and guides me through the production process. As the great artists of the past used to say, “ the sculpture is in the stone”, and you just have to let it out”. Una passione per la moda quella di Antonio, origini calabresi, nata tra la scuola di ricamo delle zie e le sartorie delle amiche della madre. Poi si trasferisce a Firenze dove studia tecnica sartoriale, storia del costume e arte della tessitura. Nel 2000 apre il primo laboratorio e nel 2005 si trasferisce nell’attuale sede di piazza Pitti. Antonio disegna, crea e realizza in maniera del tutto artigianale le sue collezioni di cappelli; in più, nel negozio, è presentata anche una piccola linea di abbigliamento: “Scelgo il materiale, ed è lui che mi suggerisce e mi guida nell’esecuzione del cappello. In 1987, Simone Abbarchi was introduced to the secrets behind the art of bespoke shirt-making by one of the greatest Florentine craftsmen: from the design to the choice of materials to finishing details. In 1997, he opened his own shop. The golden rules: taking the customer’s measurements and being attentive to his specific needs, choosing the collar, cuff type and fabric among 3000/4000 options. 24 hours and the shirt is cut and ready for fitting. Only mother-of-pearl buttons, the shape and size of which are personalized to the customer’s request, as well as the handmade initials and embroideries. This is the oldest workshop in Florence, still run by the same family, the Filistrucchi. It was founded in 1720 when the fashion for wigs, which had been in vogue at the French court for some time, arrived in Italy too. Later it became specialised in theatrical hair and make-up. It produces wigs, beards, moustaches and toupees in natural hair, as well as masks and prosthetics in latex and papier-mâché, in addition to customised articles made using natural hair for a perfect reproduction of the original. Fu fondata nel 1720 quando la moda della parrucca, già da tempo in auge presso la corte francese, si estese anche in Italia; è arrivata poi la specializzazione in acconciature e trucco per il teatro. The mission of Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio, the legacy of Giuseppe Lisio who founded his silk manufacturing company in 1906, is to hand down the art of handweaving silk, brocaded and cut, pile and richly figured velvet fabrics to the future generations. The fabrics are woven on early twentiethcentury looms. The Foundation is also committed to the training of skilled weavers by teaching various weaving classes. The atelier is continuing the activity started in the thirties by Giulia Carla Cecchi. Today, her children Pola, a sophisticated dressmaker, and Marzio, an architect working at Studio Most, combine art and craftsmanship. The morning, cocktail and evening dresses, the suits and outfits, the stylish coats are on display alongside the many fabrics customers can choose from. The atelier provides a special service: old fur coats are taken apart and transformed into “one-of-the-kind by-products”. L’atelier eredita, continua e trasforma l’attività iniziata negli anni Trenta da Giulia Carla Cecchi. Oggi il sapere artigiano si fonde con l’arte seguendo le attitudini dei figli Pola, raffinatissima sarta, e Marzio, architetto dello Studio Most. “Today many talk about tailoring, but very few really know how to do it. It’s the most beautiful trade in the world. 70 hours of workmanship go into each suit and the whipstitching is done by hand. The jacket, for instance, has one dart, with the shoulder dropping a bit and the seam set back to avoid creases on the sleeve, which is rounded on the end to align with the shoulder seam”, says Antonio Liverano, a tailor of great skill and repute. He himself takes the measurements, works fifteensixteen hours per day, bent over his table, according to the dictates of the old Florentine school. His customer list counts many of Italy’s leading politicians and businessmen. “Molti oggi parlano di sartorialità, conoscendo poco questo mestiere, che è il più bello del mondo. Da me ci vogliono 70 ore per finire un vestito, e non c’è la macchina per fare il sopraggitto. La giacca, ad esempio, ha una sola pince. La spalla è spiovente, la cucitura è indietro, la manica non porta grinze o pieghe e la parte finale è arrotondata in linea con la spalla”. Parole di Antonio Liverano sarto di grande tradizione. Solo lui taglia e prende le misure, lavora quindici-sedici ore al giorno, chino al tavolo della sartoria, nel rispetto ancora dei dettami della vecchia scuola fiorentina. Embroidery is a long-standing Florentine tradition. In the 1400s, a school, which created true masterpieces of embroidery, distinct from tapestry, was founded in Florence. Famous embroiders were the nuns from the Murate convent, in Via Ghibellina, who provided vestments and ceremonial robes. Riva d’Arno is one of the very few ateliers that still pursues the art of embroidery and creates patterns, monograms, initials and coat of arms in every style and shape for houselinen and lingerie. It also restores old embroidered garments. Il ricamo appartiene a una tradizione popolare molto antica, proprio a Firenze intorno al Quattrocento si narra sia nata una scuola che creava veri capolavori in tecniche diverse dall’arazzo. Famose ricamatrici furono le monache delle Murate in via Ghibellina che fornivano paramenti ecclesiastici per le occasioni più solenni. Riva d’Arno è uno dei pochissimi atelier rimasti che si dedica a questa arte minore, eseguendo disegni, monogrammi, cifre e stemmi di ogni stile e misura, su biancheria per la casa e lingerie. In the sixties, Mario Sciales moved to Florence to work as assistant to Michele Marinaro, the owner of the tailor’s shop named after him and started in 1937, of which he became the owner in 1970. Every garment is strictly handmade, according to the dictates of the old tailoring school. The suit is cut on a linen pattern, on which the fabric is then placed to ensure perfect wearability. A personalized pattern is made specifically for each customer. The tailor’s shop has preserved the atmosphere of an earlier time, although it serves a vast clientele of bankers and businessmen from New York City. Negli anni 60 Mario Sciales si trasferisce a Firenze per lavorare come stretto collaboratore di Michele Marinaro, proprietario dell’omonima sartoria, nata nel 1937, e nel 1970 ne diventa titolare. Ogni capo è realizzato rigorosamente a mano, come i dettami della vecchia scuola sartoriale comandano. L’abito è tagliato su una struttura in lino alla quale viene poi adattato il tessuto, per conferire al capo maggiore vestibilità e per ogni cliente viene tracciato un modello personalizzato, in base alla conformazione. After years of training as a cutter and tailor in his hometown, Giuseppe Seminara started his first shop in Florence, which was then moved to the current premises downtown, in Via de’Calzaiuoli. Today, his son Gianni runs the tailor’s shop. The fabrics are all carefully selected. Once the measurements are taken, the geometrical pattern is drawn on fabric or canvas and is used as a sample. The pieces are cut and sewn together and ready for the first fitting. The jacket will always fit loosely, but will never be as unstructured as Neapolitan jackets, nor as stiff as the English ones. Con un apprendistato dai maestri del paese natio di Calabria, esperienza di tagliatore e quindi sarto, Giuseppe Seminara apre nel 1957 la sua prima bottega a Firenze, che poi amplia e trasferisce nella centralissima via de’ Calzaiuoli. Oggi è il figlio Gianni che conduce questa fucina della cucitura. Selezionatissimi i tessuti. Dopo le misure si procede al disegno geometrico su tessuto o su una tela leggera che servirà per prova campione. Si uniscono i pezzi tagliati e si mette il capo in prima prova. This is one of the top leather workshops (specialised in boxes, desk sets, frames) set up in 1956. The principal source of inspiration is the Florentine artistic heritage, and more specifically certain details of the works of art on display in the museums. The antique models are interpreted on the keynote of the new, keeping vibrantly alive the indissoluble link between the function of the object and its beauty. One of the main features of the Peroni ranges is the hand-coloured leather, and one of the hallmark shades is the “burr” finish that imitates the variegated hues of burr woods. It is well worth a visit, on account of both the unique setting and the supreme elegance of the creations: hand-stitched bags made to order specially for the customers. One-off articles made up in deerskin, crocodile, python and ostrich, decorated with antique gemstones and silver. But Bemer doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just make bespoke shoes for potentates and VIPs the world over, he also teaches you how to take care of them, because you have to know how to polish them properly if you want them to last ten years and more, at least. Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;attore Daniel Day Lewis alcuni anni fa volle restare in incognito, alcuni mesi, nella sua bottega in San Frediano per impararne il mestiere. Dovette venire di persona Martin Scorsese per riportarlo negli Stati Uniti a interpretare Gangs of New York. Una bottegacaveau con le forme di tanti piedi illustri, questa. Ma Bemer non fa solo scarpe su misura indossate da potenti e vip di tutto il mondo. In the Renaissance, Florence was the place where the art of creating perfumes came to birth. If truth be told, the nose that taught the expertise to the French was a certain Renato Bianco (later Frenchified into René Le Florentin), who arrived in Paris in the retinue of Caterina de’ Medici. We can still find this illustrious past alive and flourishing in a number of tireless workshops: little temples dedicated to beauty, but known all over the world. Firenze, nel Rinascimento, fu la culla dell’arte di creare profumi, tanto che il naso che insegnò a quest’arte ai francesi fu tal Renato Bianco (poi francesizzato in René Le Florentin) giunto a Parigi al seguito di Caterina de’ Medici. Quel passato insigne oggi lo ritroviamo vivissimo in alcuni operosi laboratori, piccoli templi consacrati alla bellezza, eppure conosciuti in tutto il mondo.

The first information documenting the foundation of the Farmacia SS. Annunziata dates back to 1561. The ancient tradition of its galenical preparations and skin cleansing and cosmetic products has survived up to the present. Among the preparations most in demand are its special skin products, created and recommended to customers on the basis of season, climate and the psycho-physical state of each customer. In any case, we recommend you to try perfume 450, based on smoked iris. La prima notizia che documenta la nascita della Farmacia SS. Annunziata risale al 1561. L’antica tradizione dei suoi preparati galenici, e dei prodotti per l’igiene e l’estetica della pelle, è stata mantenuta viva fino a oggi. Tra le preparazioni più richieste si annoverano i suoi speciali prodotti per la pelle, creati e consigliati secondo principi che tengono conto della stagionalità, del clima e dello stato psicofisico di ogni singolo cliente, ma vi consigliamo comunque di provare il profumo “450” a base di iris affumicato. The Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella may well be the oldest shop in the world. Its origins go back to the Dominican friars who established themselves in Florence in 1221, building their convent. However, the year of the official foundation goes back to 1612, which was when the friars began to sell their curative products and perfumes directly to the public. Among the ancient preparations that are still made today are the Rose Water, that is an excellent refreshing tonic, the Almond Paste, wonderful for the hands, the Skin Whitening Powder, an outstanding exfoliant for deep-cleansing of the face. L’Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella lega le sue origini ai frati Domenicani che nel 1221 si stabilirono a Firenze, costruendovi un loro convento. Ma l’anno della fondazione ufficiale dell’Officina si fa risalire al 1612, quando i frati iniziarono vendere direttamente i loro prodotti curativi e i profumi. Tra le antiche preparazioni ancor oggi realizzate l’Acqua di Rose, ottimo rinfrescante, la Pasta di Mandorle, ottima per le mani, la Polvere per Bianchire le Carni, valido esfoliante per la pulizia a fondo del viso.
