Commodore's Corner

Firstly, the Lions Playoff game attendance was truly remarkable! The entire building was buzzing with excitement as members came together to enjoy the festivities. Let's not forget the culinary delights prepared by our talented Chef—those sliders were a hit!

Looking ahead, we have three special occasions on the horizon: St. Patrick's Day, the Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Sunday Brunch. If you haven't already, be sure to secure your reservation for Easter. It's one of the most popular events at the Club!

You may have noticed some exciting upgrades underway this year. The new carpet in the Main Dining Room has already made a significant impact on the room's ambiance. Additionally, the Binnacle is undergoing a facelift to enhance both its functionality and appearance. With the center door reopening and the removal of the riser and booths, we anticipate a completely transformed space.

This spring, we're proud to host three prestigious sailing events at the Club. The recent acquisition of twenty new 420 class sailboats is a testament to our commitment to elevating the GPYC Sailing Program's reputation nationwide. Sailing has been a cherished tradition at the GPYC since its establishment.

Our summer programs are now underway for the upcoming season. If you're a parent or grandparent considering our Day Camp Program for your children or grandchildren, please note that space is limited and may already be filled. Renowned for its exceptional management and offerings, our program ensures a memorable summer experience for all participants. Amidst the summer excitement, let's not overlook the growth of the GPYC Swim Team and our vibrant Sailing Program.

Lastly, the eagerly anticipated launch day is just around the corner, signaling the beginning of a new season at the Club. Get ready to welcome back the fun and excitement, including the reopening of the pool area!

From the Boardroom

We hope you are enjoying our feature, "From the Boardroom." This monthly feature will help members stay informed about important actions, policy developments, and special projects that were addressed at the most recent Board of Directors meeting. We hope “From the Boardroom” will spark member interest, lead to suggestions for improvements at the Club, and provide information that members find useful.

1. Operations Report:

a. Capital Expenditures budget was reviewed observing that expenditures are on-budget to-date. This budget continues to maintain a significant focus on maintaining and enhancing the underpinnings of the facility, and various planned club enhancements (e.g., new Fiber communication system, carpeting, painting, etc.), many of which can be seen as “underway” at the Club!

2. Membership Report

a. Membership Director Alexa Coole presented to the Board of Directors the current state of membership; observing that studies continue to compare our Club to other area clubs in the way of dues vs. value and other areas of membership amenities.

b. Membership report was reviewed noting 2 new member, 7 resignations and 6 transfers.

c. Membership Committee continues to closely follow and assess current membership drive incentives which go through February 2024.

3. Treasurer’s Report

a. The financial packet and minutes were reviewed and discussed.

b. For the four months ended December 31, 2023, Club Operations are slightly below budget, largely being driven by decline in Full Member Equivalents. Club usage remains good.

c. Membership remains a critical focus area.

4. Harbor Committee

a. The Committee is continuing to assess options to increase well usage for the upcoming year.

5. Other Business

a. A Centennial Committee was formed (including Executive Management, members from the GPYC Foundation and Board of Directors) to plan for the celebration of the 100th year of the GPYC Building (2029). Discussions are planned to begin over the next several months.

As the vibrant spirit of spring fills the air, we are thrilled to announce that registration for our highly anticipated Summer Programs is now open! Get ready for a season filled with excitement, growth, and endless opportunities for fun at the Club.

We are delighted to welcome back many of our esteemed directors who bring with them a wealth of experience and passion for their respective programs. Join us in welcoming Tennis Director Dmitri Diakonov back for his 13th season in Racquet Sports, along with the addition of Pickleball Pro Mike Andrews to cater to the growing interest in this exhilarating sport. For those eager to hit the courts, we anticipate the Pickleball Courts to be available for play by April, while our clay tennis courts should be ready for action by May, weather permitting.

Our Junior Sailing Program, under the leadership of Sailing Director Christina Noland, promises to be another thrilling season of sailing adventures. With a team of dedicated coaches, our young sailors are sure to excel on the water.

The Swim Team, led by Coach Jim Singelyn and Assistant Coach Bill Thompson, is gearing up for another fantastic year in the pool. Whether your child is a seasoned swimmer or just starting out, our team welcomes all levels of experience, offering not only top-notch training but also a supportive and inclusive environment.

If your little one is taking their first strokes in swimming, our swim lessons are tailored to assist them in mastering this vital skill. Led by our dedicated pool staff, under the guidance of Pool Manager Elizabeth Bourke, we offer flexible scheduling to accommodate your busy routines. Elizabeth, in addition to managing the pool operations, also leads our popular water aerobics program, catering to those seeking a refreshing and invigorating workout in the water.

Looking for a comprehensive summer experience for your child? Explore the GPYC Day Camp, where the campers can indulge in a wide range of activities from swimming to outdoor games, crafts, and special guest appearances. With generous drop-off and pickup times, along with daily meals prepared by Chef Eric, Day Camp offers convenience and endless opportunities for exploration and growth. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our longtime Day Camp Director, Madeleine Kaiser, for her invaluable contributions over the years. As Madeleine begins a new chapter in her life, we welcome our new Director, Caelin Micks, who brings fresh perspectives and exciting plans for the program. She is bringing back many of the same counselors from last year and can’t wait to meet everyone.

Summer is just around the corner, and as we gear up for another exciting boating season, we're on the lookout for volunteers to serve as Dock Captains for our upcoming Fleet Review party in August.

Dock Captains play a crucial role in fostering community spirit. Their responsibilities include organizing meet-andgreet sessions early in the season to welcome new dock neighbors, as well as coordinating their dock theme and decorations for the Fleet Review dock parties.

Exclusive Dock Captain gatherings are planned to collaborate with your fellow Dock Captains, share details on Fleet Review Weekend, and give you all the tools needed for a successful season.

We're aiming to have at least one captain from each dock and one social member captain to lead the organization of the Social Dock party.

GPYC Member's Son Honored as Player of the Game at Detroit Red Wings Game

On Thursday, January 25, GPYC member Linda Jozefiak's son, Michael Jozefiak V, achieved a remarkable milestone at the Detroit Red Wings game held at Little Caesar's Arena. As the player of the game, Michael proudly represented his Belle Tire hockey team, paying tribute to his late father, Michael Jozefiak IV, who passed away in November. Amidst a touching moment, he skated onto the ice and stood alongside Wings players during the National Anthem, honoring his father's memory with grace and pride.

Join the GPYC Swim Team: A Fun Opportunity for You and Your Children!

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity for your children to dive into this summer? Look no further than the GPYC Swim Team! Whether your child is just dipping their toes into the world of swimming or is a seasoned competitor, our team offers a welcoming and supportive environment for swimmers of all levels. Studies show that swimming is the best sport for athletes to improve lung capacity, strengthen your core, and build endurance and muscle strength.

Under the exceptional guidance of our coaching staff, including Head Coach Jimmy Singelyn, Assistant Head Coaches Bill Thompson, and Elizabeth Bourke, the GPYC Sailfish had an impressive season last year, finishing 5th out of 14 teams at the Michigan Inter-Club Swimming Association (MICSA) finals. Not only do we focus on achieving athletic success, but we also prioritize giving back to our community. Thanks to the generosity of our Sailfish families, we raised over $8,500 for the YMCA Detroit Swims Program, winning the Corsan Challenge in the process.

Throughout the season, both parents and swimmers alike have a blast participating in a variety of fun activities, from poster making to pizza parties and post-swim meet dinners and dance parties. Our 2024 season is just around the corner, kicking off with our Meet the Coaches/Spring Auction and Parent meeting on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Neck Rolls

Mobility Routine

Gently roll your neck in circular motions, both clockwise and counterclockwise. Avoid any sudden or forceful movements.

Shoulder Circles

Rotate your shoulders in circular motions, first forward and then backward. Focus on smooth and controlled movements.

Arm Swings

Swing your arms forward and backward, gradually increasing the range of motion. This helps to loosen up the shoulder joints.

Wrist Flexor and Extensor Stretches

Hold your arm straight in front of you, palm facing down. Use your opposite hand to gently pull your fingers towards you for the wrist flexor stretch. Repeat with the palm facing up for the wrist extensor stretch.

Spinal Twists

Sit or stand with your back straight. Twist your torso to one side, bringing your opposite hand across your body. Hold for a few seconds and switch sides. This exercise promotes spinal flexibility.

Up Your Alley Let's Bowl!

Winter's favorite spot, the Bowling Rec Center, has been buzzing with action lately! Scores are soaring, and leagues are in full swing.

Here's a quick roundup of recent standout performances:

• Monday Men's League: Matt Schaden hit a high of 274, followed by David Schaden with 253, and Andrew Christians with an impressive 245. Christians also dominated with a series score of 722.

• Wednesday Night League: Dominic Neumann led with 243, while Barbara Alcorn scored a solid 222.

• Thursday Night League: Sean Fannon stole the show with an impressive 278, backed by Chris Izzi's 264, Matt Lucchese’s 247 and Renee Seago's 171.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for March 22, when the Wednesday Night Mixed League faces off against the Thursday Night Mixed League in our inaugural Battle of the Mixed Leagues—an event you won't want to miss!

In other news, we triumphed in our final interclub match against the Detroit Golf Club, securing victory by a whopping 354 pins. Kudos to our outstanding bowlers, including Gardner Martin, whose 734-handicap series led the charge. Special mention goes to Gardner Martin and Roy Maksym for their victory in the doubles event, as well as to the winning team comprising of David and Matt Schaden, along with Andrew Christians. This completes our clean sweep of interclub tournaments for the season, adding to the Club's legacy of excellence.

GPYC Member-Employee Bowling Tournament

On Tuesday, February 6, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual member-employee bowling tournament, a cherished tradition at our Club. This event pairs a member with an employee to compete as doubles teams. This year, the winning duo was Pete Beauregard and Jim Ewald, security guard. Remarkably, this marks Jim's second victory in the history of our tournament.

In second place, we congratulate Cathy Champion and Mike Hadsall, bartender. The third-place honors go to Sean Fannon and his partner, Lee Pregizer, restaurant cook. Barbara Alcorn and her partner Joe Ski, bartender, secured the fourth-place spot. Rounding out the top five, we commend Matt Schaden and Bre Moore, banquet server.

A special note of appreciation goes to Tommy and Gordy for their exceptional contributions, bartending and hosting respectively, even on their nights off. Their dedication to ensuring the success of our event is truly commendable. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all participants and winners, and we look forward to more memorable events in the future!

Wine of the Month

Is it spring yet? The GPYC Wine Committee is having a blast exploring and tasting new wines to bring an exciting selection to the Club. We hope you are all making it to the Monthly Wine Tasting event at the MDR every first Thursday of the month –it's a fantastic opportunity to discover the Wine of the Month and elevate your palate.

The Committee decided to start focusing in on some regions that might be a bit less familiar to us. Given that our education series is centered around the exquisite wines of France, we couldn't resist the temptation to indulge in a blind tasting of some French gems. It's been an eye-opening experience, and we can't wait to share our newfound favorites with you.

The March wine of the month winner is Hugel Pinot Noir. This 100% Pinot Noir is harvested exclusively by hand from clay and limestone vineyards. It is matured in vats and bottled in early summer. The bottles are aged in cellars until it reaches perfection. The Hugel & Fils winery, located in Riquewihr, Alsace, France is 100% family owned and managed by the 12th generation with vines that have been cultivated for over 2,000 years. The family are members of the Primum Familiae Vini – an exclusive association of the world's most prestigious wine dynasties.

The Hugel Pinot Noir presented common traits of a Burgundian wine on the nose, wet soil, mushroom, and red fruit, but offers a slightly fuller and denser mouthfeel. This wine promises to be a perfect companion to a variety of dishes, making it an ideal match for veal, mushrooms, or poultry. Taste for yourself on March 7 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the MDR! Purchase a glass for just $15 or a bottle for $60 throughout the entire month of March.

The game of Mahjong is a new experience at the Club. Interest in this game has been phenomenal.

To date, 34 members have signed up for free lessons. Lessons involve 3 sessions each for two hours.

The answer lies in mastering the art of flavor, and one technique that stands out is "Searing."

Unlocking Flavor with Searing: A Culinary Journey

In our Healthy Living Cooking Class held this January, we delved into the world of searing—a process that goes beyond cooking; it's about locking in flavors that make everything taste better. Doing things the right way matters, and seeking guidance from professionals unveils the science behind culinary artistry.

When you sear, you initiate the Maillard Reaction—a chemical process responsible for the delightful flavors and aromas associated with browning. Whether it's meats, vegetables, or even cookies, achieving the perfect sear is key. The technique, often performed in a sauté pan at high temperatures, results in a crispy brown crust on the outside of meat, sealing in its juices for a tender and succulent bite.

Choosing the Right Tools for the Perfect Sear

Practicality is essential in the kitchen, and acquiring the right tools enhances the searing experience. A good pan is indispensable, and options like cast iron, nonstick, and stainless steel cover the spectrum of culinary needs. Cast iron, known for its heat retention, ensures a consistent sear and flavor retention. Nonstick pans excel with quick items like eggs, while stainless steel pans serve as versatile workhorses.

Equally crucial is the choice of cooking oil. With a myriad of options available, it's essential to select oils with high flash points to withstand the intense heat required for searing. Options like avocado, peanut, canola, sunflower, and sesame oil offer excellent results. Experimentation is key to finding the perfect match that aligns with your desired flavor profile.

Creating Culinary Memories: A Simple Steak Recipe

In conclusion, the synergy of quality pans, the right cooking oil, and the searing technique results in an explosion of wonderful flavors. To bring this knowledge to life, we've included a simple steak recipe—a dish that will warm the hearts of members, creating cherished memories around good food.

Recipe

Seared NY Strip with Wild Mushrooms and Fingerling Potatoes

Ingredients:

For the NY Strip:

• 12 oz NY Strip (prime)

• 2 oz butter

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 sprig rosemary

• Seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste

Yield: 2 people

For the Accompaniment:

• 6 oz wild mushroom assortment (trumpet, shiitake, etc.)

• 2 oz salted butter

• 3 sprigs fresh thyme

• ½ tsp minced garlic

• ½ shallot, minced

• 2 oz sherry wine

• Salt and pepper to taste

For the Fingerling Potatoes:

• 10 oz fingerling potatoes, washed, cleaned, and cut into small bite-size chunks (pre-steamed or boiled until tender)

• 1 scallion (green onion), chopped

• ½ tsp minced garlic

• 2 oz olive oil

• 1 strip bacon or pancetta, chopped

• Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Prepare the NY Strip:

Season the NY strip 1 hour before cooking, massaging seasoning into the meat.

Heat oil in a non-reactive sauté pan over medium-high heat, ensuring it's very hot.

Slowly add the steak to the pan, searing on both sides until golden. For higher temperatures, finish in a preheated 400°F oven until the desired doneness is reached, using a meat thermometer for accuracy.

Add butter, garlic, and rosemary to the pan, basting the steak until finished.

Rest the steak on a rack or plate for 10-25 minutes, then slice against the grain for optimal moisture retention.

Prepare the Mushrooms:

In a sauté pan over medium-high heat, add oil, mushrooms, garlic, shallot, and herbs.

Sear mushrooms until well-browned, then deglaze with sherry and let it absorb.

Add butter, gently folding it into the mushrooms. Keep warm on the side.

Prepare the Fingerling Potatoes:

In a sauté pan over medium-high heat, add oil, bacon, and render until crispy. Add garlic and potatoes. Cook, moving often, until all items are heated through.

Add green onions, season, and keep warm on the side.

Serve the Seared NY Strip with the Wild Mushrooms and Fingerling Potatoes for a culinary experience that combines the rich flavors of perfectly seared steak, savory mushrooms, and hearty potatoes. Enjoy!

Trivia, Tequila, and Tacos

On Friday, January 19, members gathered at the Tower Pub to savor a Tequila flight skillfully poured by bartenders Tommy and Kishor. The evening was complemented by a tacos – of course, and members also engaged in rounds of trivia, testing their knowledge and adding a fun and competitive element to the gathering. In the first round, the winning team scored big and earned the prestigious Clase Azul Tequila bottle. The secondround winners celebrated their victory with a delightful wine basket, while the third round winners received complimentary drink tickets for the MDR Bar. Cheers to the brilliance of our trivia masters – your knowledge has never tasted so sweet!

Big Red’s & Bubbly Wine Tasting

indulged in an exquisite evening at our Big Red’s and Bubbly Wine Tasting, held in the Spinnaker. They were immersed in the enchanting world of fine wines as GPYC member Marilyn Stephenson from Woodberry Wines showcased the season’s best Big Reds and Bubbly Wines. The quiet ambiance of the Spinnaker provided the perfect setting for wine tasting, allowing guests to savor each sip and appreciate the nuances of the wines presented.

WINE EVENT INCLUDES SURPRISE TASTING

On January 26, Emma Alexander from Vintage Wines delighted GPYC wine aficionados with a program based on grapes and tastes. Comparisons were drawn between Old World and New World wines and the ways in which grapes are grown and used by winemakers in different areas of the world. Members learned how the same grape can be used in so many creative ways to produce vastly different wines. Additionally, guests enjoyed insights on food and wine pairings after carefully studying the wines Emma was pouring. Chef Eric curated exquisite bites perfectly matched to each wine. From fresh oysters paired with Gosset Grand Reserve Brut Champagne to chocolate complementing Dow’s Ruby Port, it was an unforgettable tasting experience.

Winter Blast

On Saturday, January 20, members and their friends gathered on the East Lawn for a throwback to the 80s with our Hot Tub Time Machine theme. Congratulations to Olivia and Dominic Paluzzi, who rocked the neon snow suits and clinched the Best 80s Dressed contest! The evening was a blast, featuring comfort food buffets by Chef Eric and the culinary team, glow bowling, dancing on the illuminated dance floor, shot skis, and spirited games of beer pong.

GPYC Shows Their LIONS Support

On Sunday, January 29, the MDR buzzed with excitement as members gathered to celebrate the Detroit Lions' remarkable journey to the second round of playoffs. The anticipation for this pivotal game brought together a vibrant community of fans and friends, all eager to witness whether the Lions would secure their spot in the Super Bowl.

To enhance the festive atmosphere, General Manager Aaron Wagner hoisted a Lions Flag up the flagpoles in front of the Clubhouse. The Club was also lit with a blue glow all weekend to show our unwavering support for the Detroit Lions. Inside the Ballroom, we organized a spirited Halftime Cornhole Tournament where GPYC members Mary and Kathryn Schaden emerged victorious, earning themselves the privilege of selecting Lions Jerseys of their choice. The sense of camaraderie and friendly competition heightened the excitement and enjoyment of the day.

As part of our commitment to enhancing the game-day experience, a complimentary buffet was laid out for all attendees. Members also had the opportunity to savor a special concoction named the "Lions KoolAid," a refreshing drink crafted exclusively for the occasion.

While the Lions didn't clinch the victory that day, their outstanding performance and unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on our hearts. The team's resilience and dedication continue to inspire us, and we eagerly await the surprises and triumphs they have in store for the upcoming year. Despite the outcome, the celebration at GPYC was a testament to the bond among our members and their shared passion for the Detroit Lions.

Caelin Micks

The Club is thrilled to introduce Caelin Micks as our new Day Camp Director! With four years of teaching experience in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools and her current role as a fourth-grade teacher at Maire Elementary School, Caelin brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to our Day Camp Program. Notably, she recently earned her master’s degree in educational leadership this past December.

Outside the classroom, Caelin is a dedicated fitness enthusiast who enjoys participating in workout classes and spending time outdoors with friends and family. Her passion for an active lifestyle aligns perfectly with our camp's values of fun, adventure, and positivity.

Caelin is eager to forge meaningful connections with our campers this summer. She believes that summer camp should be an unforgettable experience filled with excitement and new discoveries. With her vibrant energy and dedication, she looks forward to creating memorable moments and fostering a vibrant camp community. Ladies (ages 12-up): Blouse, sweater or collared shirt with tailored pants or denim. Dresses and skirts worn in good taste are also permitted. Hoodies and t-shirts are not permitted. Kid's Club

Parents – you have the opportunity to enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening at the Club, while your kids enjoy Kid’s Club on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 – 10:00 p.m. Children must be three years old and potty trained. $30 for the first child, $25 for each additional child in the family, this includes a buffet made up of some your children's favorites!

To maintain the appropriate staff-tochild ratio, the maximum number of children who may attend Kid’s Club is 6 children per sitter. Reservations are required. The cut-off for reservations is by 4:30 p.m. the day of. We understand things can happen last minute. There will be an additional $20 charge per walk-in visit.

Lake St. Clair Light Trophy

Donated by Stewart T. Hanson in 1952. Originally dedicated for the GPYC Bluenose Regatta for Cruising Class C. Last awarded in 1992 to John Barbour’s Velero. This trophy is currently assigned to the NA 40 Class. From 1952 to 1992, some of the more memorable boats and sailors to win this trophy included:

First winner was Apache, then owned by Wilfred “Toot” Gmeiner, but originally owned by donator Tommy Fisher. Rededicated in 1974 to Overall Winner of the Bluenose. In 1990, the trophy was rededicated as an award to the GPYC Yachtsman of the Year. Qualifications are based on:

• Overall season standing, DRYA regular and long distance races

• Participation in Port Huron and Chicago to Mackinac races

• Participation and standing, Bluenose Regatta

• Strength of competition in respective class

• Overall improvement of performance

Main Dining Room

The half-hull models hanging in the Main Dining Room were all beautifully constructed by Maya Boat Works in Algonac, Mich. and feature speedboats owned at some point by GPYC members. The one ownership exception is the model at the bottom.

Miss America X, owned and piloted by local businessman and speedboat racer Gar Wood, a DYC member. In 1932, Gar Wood in Miss America X beat Miss England III in a thrilling race on Lake St. Clair viewed by tens of thousands of spectators, to win the coveted Harmsworth Cup. Just a few weeks later, Gar piloted Miss America X to set a world speed record on the St. Clair River. Former GPYC members Mike and Karen Thomason donated this half-hull.

Join us for Trap Shooting on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Marine Activity Center and enjoy complimentary Chef John's Chili. Members and guests must bring their own firearm and eye protection. The GPYC has eye protection for sale. $30 per person. Includes ammunition and hearing protection. After rounds are completed, drinks are also included in the cost and will be available.
