This month’s cover photo captures the artistry of a stunning oyster ice sculpture from our Annual Fleet Review Dinner Party—an evening that reflected both tradition and celebration at its finest.

Inside this issue, you’ll find highlights from our Galaxy Foam Party, snapshots from Fleet Review weekend, and plenty of reasons to look ahead. As we say farewell to long summer days and sail into the cozy spirit of fall, our calendar is filled with events that bring members together including the always-popular Doggy Splash Day, our festive Fall Family Festival, and spirited Lions Tailgates right here at the Club.

September marks that special time of year when the evenings turn crisp, the leaves begin to change, and the lake takes on a new kind of beauty. It’s the season of cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and gathering with friends to celebrate Michigan traditions, whether dockside at sunset or cheering on the Lions.

As always, your feedback is important to us. Whether it’s a compliment, suggestion, or fresh idea, we’d love to hear from you. Please send your thoughts to experience@gpyc.org and help us continue to elevate the member experience.

Here’s to crisp evenings, fall festivities, and the excitement of a new season at GPYC.

See you at the Club!

For our boaters, the rendezvous to Catawba Island Club and up north to Mackinac Island saw record attendance at both. We had 120 participants and over 30 boats on Mackinac Island, and thanks to hard work right up to the event, every boat was successfully docked. I cannot thank the people who made these events happen enough. Special thanks to Aaron and Maria for your on-site support, to Veronica for her warm hospitality at East Dock, to Kevin O’Brien for hosting us at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club, and to Dan and Jill Connell for welcoming us into their Mackinac Island home.

Get Ready for Fall Fun at GPYC

In Michigan, many clubs—whether yacht clubs, country clubs, or golf clubs—start to slow down as the seasons shift from summer to fall. The weather gets a bit cooler, and harbors and golf courses begin to prepare for winter hibernation.

At GPYC, we see it differently. For us, fall is an opportunity to change things up and enjoy unique activities. Fall at the GPYC is full of fun for the entire family—and it all kicks off in September.

We are proud to say that GPYC is the only local club or park that keeps its pool open in September. The Pool, Harborside Grill, and Gazebo Bar all remain open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. (weather permitting). Make sure to take advantage of this extended season and keep the kids active after school (between homework, of course!).

Football fans, get ready! Our Lions Tailgates are new this fall so save the dates on September 7, 14, and 28. Join us at the Club to cheer on the Lions with fellow members while enjoying food, drinks, and plenty of game-day spirit.

For our dog owners, we’ll host our annual Doggy Splash Day on the last day the pool is open, Sunday, September 28. It’s always a blast to see our furry friends—and their families—splashing around together.

The Club also continues to feature the best outdoor dining experience in Metro Detroit on the Binnacle Terrace throughout September, offering breathtaking views. Invite friends or neighbors to join you for dinner and show them what makes our Club so special!

We’ve had a strong year of recruiting new members, and we truly appreciate your commitment to helping us grow our Club community. Don’t forget—there’s a referral bonus for members who successfully recruit friends, family, or neighbors to join GPYC.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who participated in the Annual Membership Survey. Your feedback is invaluable and helps shape our planning for the year ahead and beyond. The best clubs are those that continually look to improve their services as member needs evolve through time and across generations.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Kishor Oza, a beloved member of our Club family and longtime bartender. Kishor’s warm smile, gracious demeanor, and dedication to exceptional service touched the lives of countless members over the years.

For 21 years, Kishor was a fixture behind the bar at the Club. He was always ready with a kind word, a listening ear, and your favorite drink prepared just right. His professionalism, sense of humor, and genuine care for everyone he met made him not just a colleague, but a dear friend to many. We are grateful for the memories he helped create and the joy he brought to our community. Kishor will be greatly missed by staff, members, and friends alike.

From the Boardroom

Here’s what we covered and what’s next.

Membership Momentum

• 5 Legacy-Social Members, 2 Active Members, 2 Reinstatements

• 3 Resignations, 1 Social Transfer, 1 Legacy-Social Transfer

• Sponsor incentive: the primary sponsor of a new member receives a house credit equal to one month of the new member’s dues after initiation is paid (approved unanimously).

The sponsor credit should spark more referrals and keep momentum strong throughout the year.

Financial Snapshot

• Forecast trending +$152,851 vs. budget; dues forecast –$122,952.

• What’s next: Finance reviewing audit/taxes; Sept 23 budget review; September vote on Operations & CapEx (with a detailed CapEx schedule)

With expenses in line and forecasts improving, we’re positioned to finish on target if summer volume holds.

Facilities & Captial Projects

• Ballroom windows complete and structurally sound.

• Exterior restoration & painting of the building and windows approved unanimously.

• East-wall epoxy starts 8/3; pickleball resurfacing 8/25; boiler completion targeted for October.

Visible progress is being made to restore and upgrading of Club facilities. Below are photos of the restoration process.

General Manager Operations & Member Experience

• Pool & Harborside: open weekends through Sept 28, 12–5 pm (weather/volume dependent).

• Brunch survey coming soon—tell us buffet vs. menu.

• Banquet Operations: Anna Zappa joins Aug 1 as Banquet Operations Manager.

• Member & staff surveys: Board feedback is in; distribution planned for August 11.

Extended hours, fresh leadership, and member input is our continued effort to improve membership experience and service.

Rendezvous

• Milliken: 19 boats registered; 12 slips confirmed; more pending DNR.• Member-Centric Experience – Broaden family programming, signature social events, and on-water adventures to foster camaraderie and attract the next generation.

Thanks for staying engaged—your support keeps GPYC thriving.

Membership Matters

A Remarkable Year for Membership

As we approach the end of our fiscal year, I can’t help but reflect on what an incredible year it has been for membership at GPYC. Recruitment is stronger than ever, and I’m thrilled to share that our average member age for the 24-25 year is now in the thirties—the youngest I’ve seen in my four years as Membership Director! This is such an exciting milestone, and it has been an absolute pleasure meeting and getting to know each and every one of you.

I’m even more excited for members to connect with one another, build new friendships, and get acclimated to everything the Club has to offer. Because while membership numbers are up, the heart of GPYC will always be about people, community, and creating lasting memories together.

And membership growth isn’t the only thing to celebrate, have you seen our event lineup for the fall and winter season? September is packed with exciting social events, including our newest addition, GPYC Detroit Lions Tailgates! These tailgates are designed to be fun for all ages, bringing the energy of game day right here to the Club.

If I could share one piece of advice, it would be this: use your membership to its fullest! Whether it’s attending an event, playing a match on the courts, or simply enjoying a drink at the Gazebo, make yourself at home. There’s always a new friend to meet, a connection to make, and a memory waiting to be created.

Let GPYC be your home away from home, not just for the summer season, but for all seasons.

Harbor Happenings

As we transition into the late season, we’d like to remind members that the Harbor remains open 24 hours a day through the month of September. Harbor staff is available from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with security staff monitoring the Harbor from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

With many of our seasonal team members returning to school, we kindly ask for your continued patience and understanding, as response times may be longer than usual. We strongly encourage all members to utilize our concierge service to help streamline requests and enhance your overall experience.

The fuel dock is now operating on late-season hours, opening at 8:00 a.m. and closing at sundown, due to reduced daylight and operational safety considerations. In-well pump-outs are available Monday through Thursday only.

We appreciate your support and understanding as we navigate this seasonal transition. Our team remains committed to providing safe, high-quality service throughout the remainder of the season.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank our Harbor staff for their hard work and dedication in keeping operations running smoothly throughout the summer.

To Your Health

Americans Get Enough Protein— But Are Falling Short on Fiber

Protein is a foundational nutrient in the American diet, essential for muscle repair, immune support, and metabolic health. With protein-packed products lining store shelves and diet culture promoting high-protein intake, Americans are consuming more than enough of it.

Fiber, however, is a different story. Despite its critical role in long-term health, nearly all Americans fall short of daily fiber recommendations—putting them at greater risk for chronic diseases.

Protein: Ample and Accessible

According to the What We Eat in America report from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2020, average daily protein intake among U.S. adults is:

• 90–100 grams per day for men

• 70–75 grams per day for women

These levels far exceed the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of:

• 56g/day for men

• 46g/day for women

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans confirms that protein is not a nutrient of concern for the general population. Less than 3% of Americans fall below the Estimated Average Requirement for protein intake.

Fiber: A Major Nutrient Gap

In contrast, fiber has been consistently flagged as a “nutrient of public health concern” by the USDA and HHS for over a decade. Here's what the data show:

• The recommended intake is 38 grams/day for men and 25 grams/day for women, per the Institute of Medicine.

• According to NHANES data analyzed in a 2021 American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine review, more than 90% of women and 97% of men do not meet daily fiber recommendations.

• The average fiber intake is just 15–17 grams/day—less than half of what’s advised.

This widespread deficiency has significant consequences. A 2019 meta-analysis published in The Lancet reviewed 185 prospective studies and 58 clinical trials, concluding that people who consume the most fiber have 15–30% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and colorectal cancer.

Why the Fiber Shortfall?

Several factors contribute to the U.S. fiber gap:

• High intake of processed foods that are stripped of fiber

• Low consumption of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes

• Nutrition trends that emphasize low-carb or animal-heavy diets, which typically contain little or no fiber

It’s important to note: animal-based proteins (meat, eggs, dairy) contain zero fiber. This creates a blind spot in diets that prioritize protein without pairing it with fiber-rich sources.

How to Get Enough of Both

The solution isn’t to reduce protein—it’s to increase fiber alongside it:

• Pair your protein (chicken, steak, or eggs) with fiber-rich sides like roasted vegetables, lentils, or farro

• Snack on nuts, seeds, or high-fiber fruits like raspberries and pears

• Choose whole grain versions of bread, pasta, and cereals

Even modest increases in fiber—just 5–10 extra grams per day—can significantly improve cholesterol, blood pressure, and glycemic control, according to a 2022 Nutrients review.

While Americans are excelling in protein intake, fiber remains the nation’s most under consumed nutrient.

With over 90% of the population deficient, it's time to shift some attention away from what we’re already getting enough of, and toward what we’re missing. Better health doesn't mean less protein—it means more balance.

GPYC Day Camp

2025 Day Camp Highlights

Our Day Camp was bursting with energy, excitement, and unforgettable moments. Running from mid-June through early August, we welcomed over 120 campers—an incredible turnout that exceeded last year’s numbers by 20! With nearly 65 kids joining us each day, the camp was alive with laughter, learning, and new friendships.

From creative art projects and swim time to tennis lessons and trips to the bowling alley, campers enjoyed a wide variety of activities. What truly made this season special, though, was the growth we witnessed each day.

Each week featured a new theme, keeping the experience fresh and exciting. Wednesdays were always a highlight, thanks to our signature special events. This year’s lineup included cooking with the chefs, dress-up days, hands-on science shows, a magician, a summertime Halloween celebration, a foam party, and even a visit from a petting zoo and GP Zoology!

We’re so proud of the memories made and the connections formed this summer. Planning for next year is already underway, and we can’t wait to welcome even more campers in 2026. Be on the lookout for announcements this winter!

Pickleball 101

Pickleball Interclub Tournament Results

On July 26, the Pickleball Interclub Tournament between Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and Detroit Athletic Club delivered exciting, hard-fought matches. Both teams split the match wins 2-2 and games 6-6, pushing the competition to the tiebreaker. In the end, total points decided the outcome, with GPYC edging out DAC by just six, 122 to 116.

Congratulations players!

Swim Team

Congratulations to the GPYC Sailfish on an outstanding 2025 season!

The team secured an impressive 3rd place finish in the MICSA finals, with five first-place victories and countless medals. They also set a new team record this season. Watch for next month’s article highlighting all the kids’ accomplishments and special moments from the year.

Adding to the excitement, the Sailfish captured the 2025 Corsan Challenge title for the fourth consecutive year! Their prize included a training session with the Wayne State Swim Team, along with a well-deserved pizza and ice cream party.

The Corsan Challenge supports Detroit Swims, an initiative launched in 2010 to ensure every child in Metro Detroit has the chance to learn essential water safety skills and how to swim. This mission is critical: drowning accounts for more than one in ten unintentional injury deaths among children and adolescents. In fact, reports show that 70 percent of children in the Metro Detroit area have little to no swimming ability, underscoring the urgent need for programs like Detroit Swims.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is leading the way by offering lessons at YMCAs, local schools, and community pools. The program removes every barrier by providing swimwear, towels, transportation, certified lifeguards, instructors, and the encouragement every child needs to feel safe and confident in the water.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to GPYC members and Sailfish families for their incredible generosity. Together, the team raised an impressive $18,315—that’s $15,190 more than the next highest club and $9,860 more than all other clubs combined!

From a chef's perspective, September is an exciting month that marks the transition from the late summer harvest to the vibrant flavors of fall. It’s a unique opportunity to combine the best of both seasons into one creative culinary canvas.

September’s Seasonal Bounty

Fruits:

September offers a sweet selection of apples, pears, grapes, figs, plums, nectarines, and peaches—alongside the tail end of summer berries like blackberries and raspberries.

Vegetables:

Expect a delightful mix of summer staples like corn, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, and green beans, mingling with early fall arrivals such as butternut and spaghetti squash, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and sweet potatoes.

This season is bursting with aromas and colors as cooler temperatures arrive and bonfires warm our fall-loving hearts.

Recipe Inspiration from a Chef’s Lens

• Savory & Sweet Combinations: Embrace the versatility of apples in both sweet and savory dishes—from a classic apple pie to Tomahawk pork chops smothered in bourbon apples or a cranberry-apple relish.

• Hearty Comforts: Try butternut squash gnocchi with fried Brussels sprouts and braised short ribs for a rich, seasonal dish.

• Creative Salads: Think outside the box with a stone fruit salad featuring charred sweet potatoes and blueberries—a celebration of bold flavors and textures.

Chef’s Tips & Techniques

• Embrace Seasonality: Use fresh, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible to maximize flavor and value.

• Get Creative with Pairings: Don’t hesitate to explore new combinations. Salads and entrees brimming with Michigan produce are at their best in early September.

Leverage Cooking Methods:

• Roasting enhances the natural sweetness of root vegetables—just a simple drizzle of olive oil and a hot sheet pan can do wonders.

• Braising is ideal for tenderizing meats while infusing them with the warm spices and aromatics of the season.

• Baking brings a cozy element to both savory and sweet dishes.

In essence, September invites chefs and home cooks alike to celebrate the transition of the seasons by crafting inspired, flavorful dishes that showcase the richness of both summer and fall. As the leaves begin to change, let your menu do the same—bringing warmth, creativity, and comfort to every plate.

Baked Pork Chops with Bourbon Apples and Pecans

Serves: 4 | Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

• 4 (2-inch thick) Tomahawk pork chops

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 4 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

• ½ cup pecans

• 2 tablespoons brown sugar

• 2 oz bourbon

• 2 tablespoons butter

• ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.

2. Season the pork chops with salt and pepper.

3. Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and sear the pork chops on both sides until browned.

4. In a bowl, combine the chopped apples, pecans, bourbon, and butter.

5. Spread the apple mixture around and on top of the pork chops in the skillet.

6. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl, then sprinkle over the apple mixture.

7. Cover the skillet with foil and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (longer if using bone-in chops).

8. Remove from the oven and let the pork chops rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Wine Pairings:

For this rich and flavorful dish, featuring sweet bourbon-glazed apples, buttery pecans, and savory pork, a full-bodied white or a fruit-forward red works beautifully.

• Chardonnay (Oaked): A classic oaked Chardonnay pairs wonderfully with pork and apples. Its creamy texture and notes of vanilla and baked apple mirror the warm, buttery flavors of the dish.

• Pinot Noir: A light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir offers earthy undertones and subtle fruitiness that balance the sweetness of the apples and the richness of the pork without overpowering the palate.

April 2015

• Zinfandel: If you're looking for something a bit bolder, a Zinfandel’s ripe fruit notes and hints of spice echo the bourbon and cinnamon in the recipe.

Mackianc Island Rendezvous

Monday, August 4 - Wednesday, August 6

Few destinations capture the charm of the Great Lakes quite like Mackinac Island. With its horse-drawn carriages, Victorian character, and sweeping views of the Straits, it was the perfect backdrop for this year’s Mackinac Island Rendezvous. The weekend brought together GPYC members for camaraderie, relaxation, and memorable island adventures.

The heart of the rendezvous was East Dock. From arrival on Saturday until departure Wednesday morning, the dock served as the central gathering spot for members to relax, share cocktails, and enjoy the stunning waterfront views. The host committee extended warm hospitality throughout the stay, and boats like Flame Buoyant and Iz Knot kept the atmosphere lively— sometimes opening the bar earlier than expected! Informal dockside gatherings became a highlight of the trip, with plenty of laughter and storytelling under the summer sun.

Sunday evening featured an optional Sip N’ Sail Sunset Cruise aboard the Isle Royale Queen III. Members who joined enjoyed breathtaking views of Mackinac Island from the water, toasting as the sun dipped into the horizon.

The pinnacle of the rendezvous was the group dinner at the historic Mackinac Island Yacht Club, where members gathered for an elegant evening of exceptional cuisine and fellowship. The setting, rich with history and island character, made for a perfect backdrop to celebrate GPYC tradition.

Between island exploration, cycling along the lakefront, indulging in Mackinac’s famous fudge, and enjoying the lively hub at East Dock, the rendezvous offered something for everyone. Special thanks go to the organizers and host committee for curating such a seamless and memorable experience. Until next year, Mackinac!

Club Highlights Honoring Legacys: GPYC Hosts General Manager's Reunion

The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has long been recognized as one of the premier yacht clubs in the world, a reputation built not only on tradition but also on the leadership that has guided it for more than a century. In its 111-year history, just twelve individuals have held the esteemed position of General Manager—a role that carries with it both responsibility and privilege.

Recently, the Club brought together this distinguished group for a General Manager’s Reunion, celebrating the people whose vision and dedication have shaped GPYC into the institution it is today. Of the twelve who have served, five are still with us, and their presence at this event created an atmosphere rich with camaraderie, storytelling, and reflection.

The evening was not just about the General Managers themselves, but also about the spouses who stood beside them. Behind every successful leader is a partner who makes sacrifices, often quietly, for the greater good of the Club community. Their contributions were honored equally, underscoring the shared commitment that has allowed GPYC to thrive across generations.

The reunion began with a guided tour of the Club, highlighting recent updates and sharing exciting plans for the future. From there, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before gathering for the dedication of the new GPYC Managers Wall—a lasting tribute to those who have held the position. Dinner followed where a multi-course menu paid homage to each era of leadership, with signature dishes representing different moments in GPYC’s history.

It was an evening that blended celebration with gratitude, bridging the past and future of the Club in a way only possible through the stories and experiences of those who have led it. The General Manager’s Reunion not only honored remarkable individuals but also reaffirmed the values of tradition, excellence, and community that remain at the heart of GPYC.

Looking Aft

THE GPYC 100-YEAR HISTORY BOOK IN MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT

The Mystic Seaport Museum is an amazing place to visit. Located on the riverbank in Mystic, Connecticut, it was founded in 1929 in an effort to “gather and preserve the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past.” The extensive grounds include a recreated historic 19th century seaport village and a preservation shipyard, where traditional shipbuilding techniques are continually practiced.

The museum has certainly earned its outstanding national reputation for research and education in the American maritime experience. The staff includes scholars, educators, scientists, librarians and skilled artisans, all with a mission to preserve and interpret America’s maritime history.

In 2012, Larry and I spent the better part of a day meandering through the quaint village and boarding some of the classic boats in the harbor. One of the highlights for us turned out to be the library, with its amazing collection of maritime books and materials, including yacht club books from all over the country. When Larry mentioned that we were just becoming involved in writing a definitive history celebrating the 100year anniversary of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, the librarian insisted we not forget to send them a copy for their library.

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club 100 Years: 1914-2014 was presented to the membership during that anniversary year, and in 2015 we made a return visit to duly present the museum with a copy. After a careful examination of the book, much to our surprise, they said thank you, but this is not good enough. We must have a second copy. One will be for display and the other will be put in our safe where the most important books in our collection are stored.

A copy was duly sent, and GPYC members can now be rest assured that our 100-year history lives on in the archives of the greatest maritime museum in the country, a true honor indeed.
