THEATER: WINTER TREATS

ANGRY MEN AT SUFFOLK THEATER

A play written by Reginald Rose, directed by Joe Minutillo. Set in the sweltering summer of 1958 Manhattan, 12 men meet in a jury room to decide the life or death of a teenage boy accused of murdering his father. Tensions run high as a lone juror argues the innocence of the accused murderer. In this provocatively resonant American drama, 12 jurors from all strata of society revisit the evidence, and debate the issue of reasonable doubt. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide one boy’s fate.

“Twelve Angry Men” gives a spectacular rendition of a classic tale of courage, heroism and the pursuit of justice in the face of adversity.”

Each performance will be followed by a Q&A talkback with Judges and other members of the judicial system.

SPORTS BEAT

Last month the Mets announced that the team would honor their former captain, David Wright, by both inducting him into their Hall of Fame, and retiring the uniform number he wore, #5, on July 19. While each of these accolades for David Wright were expected to happen eventually, the fact the Mets will give Wright this “honors doubleheader” on July 19 speaks volumes about the respect he commands.

Had it not been for the spinal stenosis which ended his playing career prematurely, Wright would have been on his way to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. He was a seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner in a twelve -year career despite too much time on the injured list during that time.

Netflix, the nation’s largest streaming service, has dove into live sports and entertainment in the last two months. In December, they presented, albeit with some technical difficulties, a fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. That was followed by a Christmas Day doubleheader which went off without any hitches. On January 6, Netflix became the new television home for World Wrestling Entertainment’s “RAW” which had been the most popular weekly cable television show when it was on the USA Network.

The telecast from the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, CA opened with a nice film montage of past WWE stars such as Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Bob

Backlund, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Another past WWE champion, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who serves on the board of directors of TKO Productions which purchased the company from longtime owner, the controversial Vince McMahon, greeted the soldout crowd and Netflix viewers with his timeless “Can you smell what “The Rock” has got cooking?” shtick. They loved it.

Another wrestling legend, Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea, did not receive the same warm reaction which “The Rock” did, and it shook him up. Hogan was a prominent Trump supporter, and that may not have played well in the very blue Los Angeles area. It is also possible his act may have grown stale.

The Intuit Dome WWE patrons gave 47-year-old John Cena, who will be retiring from ring action at the end of 2025, a far better welcome than they provided Hulk Hogan. Cena has used his WWE fame to branch out in many ways. He kidded about his acting career last Monday night, but the truth is he has gotten good notices in the films in which he has appeared. He hosted a knockoff of “American Gladiators” for FOX called “American Grit” a few years ago. He provides the voiceovers for all Honda television ads, and he is now doing ads for McDonald’s latest McValue meal deals.

must postpone Lakers and Clippers games, while the NFL was forced to move the VikingsRams game to Glendale, AZ.

The Southern California wildfires come after a fall full of devastating rains in central and western Florida. The Players Trust, the charitable arm of the Major League Baseball Players Association, held a clinic for kids who were affected by these storms. Mets stars Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea took part.

Quarterback Kurt Warner’s life story kicks off the latest round of cable network MGMPlus’s “NFL Icons” series which debuts Friday evening, January 17. Warner never had it easy as he was overlooked by most colleges; had to play in the Arena Football League to get noticed; and had to work nights for a Des Moines supermarket to make ends meet after getting cut by the Green Bay Packers. Perseverance paid off as he eventually became an NFL Hall of Famer. Other greats who will be profiled in this go-round of “NFL Icons” are DeMarcus Ware, Joe Montana, and Gale Sayers.

I have always enjoyed watching Katie Nolan’s witty takes on sports and pop culture during her stints on FOX Sports and ESPN. For reasons which remain mysterious to me, she has never caught on with the mass of sports fans. She will be getting a new platform on SiriusXM starting January 21 with a show called “Casuals.” The show’s titular premise is to welcome sports fans who see it as a form of entertainment and

are not obsessed with statistics and record books. If you are looking for a sports show which does not intimidate you with stat-geek terms such as “WAR” and “OPS,” this should be right up your alley.

Tennis fans will be happy to know SiriusXM has launched a tennis show titled “Holding Court” which is hosted by former US Davis Cup captain and Douglaston native, Patrick McEnroe (yes, John’s brother.) McEnroe says he will tackle non-tennis sports subjects as well. Expect him to comment on the fortunes of his beloved Mets.

Brazilian cowboy Lucas Divino won the 2025 Professional Bull Riders’ Monster Buck Off held at Madison Square Garden the first week of January. The PBR will return to the New York area from September 20-22 when the PBR’s team competition series comes to the UBS Arena just off the Cross Island Parkway. Local fans can cheer for the New York Mavericks.

Curling is an ice sport which gets inordinate attention during the Winter Olympics. One of the highest vantage points in the world, Edge, located in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, has recently launched Sky Chalet, which is home to several curling lanes, 1,100 feet above street level.

DECO AT 100 AT NASSAU MUSEUM OF ART

The Nassau County Museum of Art’s multifaceted Deco at 100 exhibition runs through June 15, 2025, and coincides with the 100th anniversary of the legendary 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which launched the movement internationally. Art Deco (1910-1950) is the crucial stylistic movement that bridges the Gilded Age and the contemporary era; it prompted a fresh look at prior styles, energizing them with a wider embrace of diverse human cultures.

The exhibition reveals Deco’s historical and cultural contexts as it encompasses significant advancements during Long Island’s Roaring Twenties/Jazz Age movement, including votes, jobs, and the automobile for women; the beginnings of suburbia with commutation for work; and dramatic economic reversals, which all defined the era. Long Island’s Gold Coast social scene and many of its personalities – both upstairs and downstairs – are portrayed.

Nearly 200 works by such artists as Louis Comfort Tiffany, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Guy Pène du Bois, Gaston Lachaise, Elie Nadelman, and Reginald Marsh along with Art Deco photographers, including Berenice Abbott, and stylists of poster art and graphics convey the Art Deco spirit along with its fashion, decorative arts, furniture, and enduring architecture.

Deco at 100 was curated by Franklin Hill Perrell and co-curated by Alex C. Maccaro. With a comprehensive understanding of the time, Perrell said, “Deco pervasively engaged modernist sensibilities, impacting the public like no art before, reflecting profound societal changes for women, workplace, lifestyles, and leisure, coming to terms with the industrial world, cosmopolitan culture,

and new means of travel and communication. It translated fast-paced Jazz-Age sensibility into cool geometry of syncopated machine-age motifs, stream-lined forms boldly infused with Cubism and revived elements from Classicism and Egyptian art.”

“Deco at 100 is as diverse and exciting as the Deco period, itself,” stated executive director Beth Horn, “Our visitors will see the opulence and independent thinking of the early era reflected in a range of media as well as the impact of the severe economic downturn that followed.”

To plan a visit, see www.nassaumuseum.org. The Museum, at One Museum Drive, off Northern Boulevard in Roslyn Harbor, New York, 11576, is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors (62 and above) and $5 for students and children (4 to 12).

Engaging public programs and lectures are scheduled through June; for information and to register, see www.nassaumuseum.org.

There also will be a Curator’s Talk: Franklin Hill Perrell Erté: Father of Art Deco Sunday, March 2, 3 p.m. Free for Members, Non-Members $20 Adult, $15 Seniors, $10 Students. Limited Seating. Register in advance.

The museum’s Chief Curator, Franklin Hill Perrell, will talk about Erté’s amazing achievements in the graphic arts, sculpture, jewelry, fashion, and the theatre, along with the colorful era in which he lived. Erté (1892-1990) the artist was born Romain de Tirtoff, at the pinnacle of the most stratified society in the world. Gifted in both dance and art, producing over 200 covers for Harpers Bazaar, fashion design for Poiret, and stage sets for the Paris Opera, Follies Bergere, Casino de Paris, and Bal Tabarin.

Here’s the list of talks during the show:

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

JAMES BAY RETURNS TO U.S.

Back with a bright, bold, and brilliant anthem for 2025, three-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated and BRIT Award-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and guitarist James Bay shares a brand new single entitled “Sunshine In The Room” featuring Jon Batiste available now. This jaunt kicks off on April 21 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, rolls through major markets coast-to-coast, and concludes on May 28 at MTELUS in Montreal, QC. Of course, the tour notably shares its moniker with his fan favorite 2024 single “Up All Night” with The Lumineers and Noah Kahan. He’ll be appearing May 22nd at The Brooklyn Paramount.

RECORD REVIEW: AWARENESS OR ILLUSION (MOTU)

Simple Minds has announced plans for a major North American headline tour– the legendary UK band’s biggest live run across the US and Canada in four decades. Bands opening in support for the entire tour will be Soft Cell and Modern English. For complete details and ticket availability, visit www.simpleminds.com/tour.

The eagerly awaited tour coincides with the 40th anniversary of Simple Minds’ momentous 1985, a milestone year in their career which saw them topping

I don't know how Dr. Richard Michelson (MOTU) does it. He's just released his 24th album, “Awareness Or Illusion,” which has to be considered by any and all for album of the year. Motu is all over the musical landscape, playing Americana roots, blues, Delta blues, rock, pop, you name it, all with great finesse.

The doctor is definitely in on this album, playing acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica, plus vocals.

“Just Shut Up, Stop Talking to Me” has a slap in the face Stoneslike opening, with his grizzly vocals making the point. A vibrant guitar solo adds to the punch.

“Something Has Changed,” “Feels like I've been re-arranged,” Dee Michelson sings on lead

vocals. Dr. Michelson makes his guitar talk, like someone else we remember, with some masterful playing, and Dee's vocals as an excellent feature.

“There's Only Us” features the pedal steel guitar, plus ripping guitar playing by the doc. He makes his point... “I'm not asking you to subscribe, to all the views I described,” he says.

“Too Much Bullshit To Normalize” is a Delta style classic with wailing harmonica and an artful mix of half a dozen instruments. Dee's vocals are a skillful counterpoint to all the instruments.

“Look To The East” is a soul searching number with excellent Dee vocals. She reflects on decisions made and failures in some soul searching. “I'm Thankful I'm Still Around” she sings and so are we.

“Company Man” closes out the album, and is my favorite. It's a subtle demonstration of Motu's guitar prowess using different guitar techniques. He weaves in and out with soulful riffs.

“Awareness or Illusion” should be on everyone's top 10 list. The pre-order date is February 18th, and the world-wide release date is March 10th. Do yourself a favor and see how a stellar musician does it.

Rising British Country artist Brook Ellingworth has released his new single, “Truck Stop,” offering a taste of his debut album, Roll The Dice, released January 28th. The single, “Truck Stop,” is available now on all streaming platforms.

“Truck Stop” tells the narrative of a boy trying to change a girl’s mind, urging her to make a “truck stop” and reconsider her LA-bound journey. With a heavy guitar lead and crying pedal steel, the production and structure of the song takes the ballad to a more personal level, setting the tone for the rest of the album.

“Truck Stop” features a rich blend of instruments, with Aaron Currie on electric guitar, Justin Weaver on acoustic guitar, Robert Blair handling drums and percussion, Chris Autry on bass guitar, Dane Bryant on keyboards, Hammond organ, piano, and synths.

BRYAN FERRY & AMELIA BARRATT LOOSE TALK

Introducing Loose Talk, the new collaborative album of music by Bryan Ferry with spoken texts by performance artist, writer and painter Amelia Barratt, due for release on March 28th.

Richly detailed and transportive, ‘Orchestra’ is the first piece to be revealed from the album Loose Talk. The video was shot and directed by Bryan Ferry.

Loose Talk signals the beginning of a new creative chapter for Bryan Ferry, blurring the lines between music, poetry and art. Fifty-three years since Roxy Music’s iconic debut album arrived like a bolt-from-the-blue, his latest project is just as startlingly unexpected. The sounds and shapes, and the spoken words they are set to, are unlike any previous Bryan Ferry album. At the same time, the mood that Loose Talk captures is rooted in Ferry’s past half-century of work.

Loose Talk marks the first time Ferry has created new music for another writer’s words. The album consists of eleven texts, composed by Amelia Barratt, creating fascinating micro-fictions, simultaneously fragmentary and self-contained.

Loose Talk will be released on March 28th digitally, on CD, Black Vinyl, Green Vinyl and Clear Vinyl.

RETURN OF COMEDY SHOW BETTER DAYS

One of New York City’s greatest comedy showcases of all time, Better Days, is back and better than ever at The Second City New York. With a surprise lineups each week, beginning February 16, catch some of the best comedy every Sunday, hosted by your mother’s favorite patron saint of the Bronx, comedian Petey DeAbreu & booked by comedy consigliere Mikala Lee Knezevich.

On the return of Better Days, DeAbreus shares “Better Days was like a lunchroom where the funniest comics in the world met up to create fun every week. The crowd and comics just vibed and had the most magical nights filled with laughter & every now and then a lil karaoke.“

Knezevich adds “Better Days was more than a comedy show, it was a community where taking risks and trying new things were always encouraged. As a producer it taught me to let go of control and leave room for the magic that a little chaos can lead to. It was like a jam session where you never knew what the night would bring you or who would pop in.”

GOOSE SHARE “GIVE IT TIME” MUSIC VIDEO

Goose shared the official music video for the euphoric first single, “Give It Time,” from their new album, Everything Must Go, arriving via No Coincidence Records on Friday, April 25. Digital and vinyl pre-orders are available now.

Everything Must Go was heralded earlier in the week with the release of “Give It Time,” a song which, like the solitary voice of doubt that rattles through the mind in our loneliest hours, starts gently but soon begins to build, buoyed by the steadying cadence of a bass drum. As the music intensifies, unfurling with soaring guitar and five-part harmonies, the uncertainty of the opening measures begins to crack, revealing in its place a perpetual message of hope

Everything Must Go is the Connecticut-based quintet’s first new studio LP in close to three years. It is the first release since 2022’s critically acclaimed Dripfield. Everything Must Go, produced by D. James Goodwin, marks the band’s evolution since its inception in 2014.

TIËSTO UNVEILS PRISMATIC: PACK 1

GRAMMY® Award-winning international icon Tiësto kicks off his next creative chapter with PRISMATIC: PACK 1, heralding his coveted PRISMATIC live sets, which sold out Forest Hills Stadium and Red Rocks Amphitheater, and followed by a performance at The Sphere Las Vegas as special guest to Anyma, and then by extended sunset performances at Zamna in Tulum and Club Space Miami. With PRISMATIC, Tiësto takes another massive leap forward, while being inspired by where it all started for him. This time around, he modernizes the melodic dance genre he famously helped forge and bring to the masses. PRISMATIC marks the beginning of a new chapter as he continues to evolve his sound, heavily influenced by his roots. Fans who have seen a Prismatic set have witnessed Tiësto at peak creativity and freedom - like nothing they’ve ever heard at one of his classic festival or club performances. PRISMATIC is an exploration of sounds in which fans are taken on a sonic journey from the nostalgic trance, to deep melodic house, all the way to the new and evolving sound of Tiësto. moe. UNVEILS

The announcement follows a week of teasers on her website, which was relaunched alongside a new storefront featuring the first of several merch drops to celebrate the highly anticipated project. Blending the eclectic energy that first captivated her fans with a bold, fearless artistic vision, MAYHEM marks a triumphant return to Gaga’s pop roots. The album explores themes of chaos and transformation, celebrating music’s power to unite, provoke, and heal.

SPIN DOCTORS FACE FULL OF CAKE

‘90s alt-rock stars the Spin Doctors announced their first studio LP in 12 years: Face Full of Cake, out April 11 via Capitol Records. They also released the album’s first single “Still A Gorilla” and its accompanying music video. “Still A Gorilla” finds the band showcasing a noisier, heavier sound but with the same sense of humor they’ve come to be known for. Inspired by the hard-hitting energy of Robyn’s “Konichiwa Bitches,” the track finds the long-running group exploring new territory after 35+ years.

To celebrate the record, the band will play an album release show at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl on April 12. To buy tickets and to see upcoming shows, visit spindoctors.com.

JOE ELY RELEASES AUDIOBOOK “REVERB”

Joe Ely is a songwriter, visual artist, and novelist whose body of work has been canonized in the storied legacy of Texas Music for its rich chronicling of life on the road. The semi-autobiographical road novel Reverb: An Odyssey (2014) emerged in audiobook form for the first time, read by Ely himself. The novel follows the journey of Earle, a young man growing up in the West Texas town of Lubbock in 1965. Earle is a high school dropout who just registered for the draft in a place that isn’t easy on those with long hair or poetic ambition. Earle decides to head for the highway and ride his thumb as far as he can, guitar in hand, wherever the path may lead.

Briskly adventurous and yet often meditative, Reverb gains a deepened presence when spoken from Ely’s own signature voice. His lived experiences reach through every word, as Ely embodies the characters and landscapes encountered along the journey — drawing a road map that leads us back to the wayfaring songs we’ve come to know him for.

In addition to releasing the Reverb audiobook, Joe Ely released a new album via Thirty Tigers on February 7th.
