NYC WINTER JAZZFEST
For its 22nd edition, NYC Winter Jazzfest (January 8-13, 2026) reaffirms its commitment to nurturing community and free expression through live music. This year’s theme centers on the joy and beauty of gathering together while celebrating the tradition and future of Black American music—especially urgent during a time when external forces threaten to erase Black culture and history.
“Winter Jazzfest has always been more than a music festival—it’s a nurturing community gathering, a platform for diverse voices, a space of joy and resilience,” said the festival team. “In 2026, we double down on the power of music to resist erasure and amplify the voices at the heart of Black American music traditions.”
The 2026 festival once again brings together a kaleidoscope of voices spanning jazz, experimental, soul, electronic, and global traditions.
On January 9, 2026, Winter Jazzfest’s legendary Manhattan Marathon once again transforms Lower Manhattan into a living map of sound, with music coursing through LPR, City Winery, City Winery Loft, Nublu, DROM, The Bitter End, and Zinc Bar. Audiences will be able to wander between venues and encounter strikingly different musical worlds that nevertheless speak to one another in surprising ways.

STEVE ISRAEL BOOK SIGNING
On Sunday, November 23rd at 2:00 pm, Steve Israel, former Congressman and author of The Einstein Conspiracy, will be guest speaker, dialoguing with moderator, Democratic activist and political commentator Robert Zimmerman, at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck. Following their conversation, there will be a meet and greet/book signing. Light refreshments will be served. All members of the community are invited. Admission is FREE. Israel’s new book is a gripping historical thriller. Based on actual events, The Einstein Conspiracy pits two FBI agents against a cunning undercover operative on a mission to abduct Albert Einstein, who Hitler believes holds the key to building the atomic bomb. Agents James Amos and Harry Weiss plunge into a shadowy, surreal America where Nazi rallies take place in the iconic Madison Square Garden, and small, once quaint villages have transformed into mini fascist utopias; appearances are not only deceiving, but deadly. The Einstein Conspiracy is rich in chilling detail and haunting reminders of a moment in American history when the line between foreign enemy and domestic threat was perilously thin. An Interview With Rory Rosegarten, Superstar Manager and Executive Producer of “Everybody Loves Raymond.”
The 17 year old student entered the Good Times office. I greeted him. “Hi, I’m Rory Rosegarten, your new intern from Great Neck South High School,” he said. It was 1979.
Today that young student is a superstar in the entertainment world. Rory is Executive Producer of Everybody Loves Raymond and has been Ray Romano’s manager for over 40 years.
I must have sensed there was something special about this young high school intern. An early assignment I gave him was to interview Dustin Hoffman. The rest is history.
“This was my first job and you were my first boss,” Rory laughed, in our Zoom interview. But Rory’s rise as “hometown hero makes good” just starts with Good Times.
Two years into college at Arizona State, he left to work for Playboy Magazine, after doing two internships there. After meeting many famous celebrities, he learned that comedian Robert Klein had left his manager. Rory contacted Robert, they hit it off, and the seed was planted, a relationship that endured 40+ years. Rory chuckles when asked how he first met Ray Romano. “ I was a judge at a K-Rock comedy competition and met Brian Regan who I started to manage. The following year I was called back. I saw Ray do his routine. I went backstage before the results were announced and boldly told him that I wanted to manage him.”
Ray was just starting out as a standup and he asked friends who this brash young fellow was. He must have gotten great references, Rory and Ray met for coffee, hit it off and have been friends and business associates for 41 years. Rory credits that both are very family oriented as a reason they clicked. It didn’t hurt that Rory was Jewish and Ray Italian, which means they came from the same “genetic” mothers. Similar values.
Everybody Loves Raymond started after Ray appeared on a David Letterman show. The Letterman team was so impressed with the young comic, that they offered him the opportunity to develop a show. The clincher was when Ray met with Philip Rosenthal, they hit it off and created “Ray,” which was based on Ray’s real life.
The series lasted for 9 seasons, won tons of awards, and established the trio of Ray, Philip and Rory as superstars in the industry.
Why was Ray so successful I asked Rory. “Because Ray is an honest guy with tons of experiences, both good and bad, and viewers could relate to him. The Barones are your family and once a week, viewers could see themselves on t.v. so to speak.” Through all their misadventures, the Barones always loved one another.

Rory credits part of Ray’s and Raymond’s success to the fact that Ray has a tremendous sense of his character and know what’s right and wrong for him as an actor.
On a show that ran for 210 episodes, it’s hard to pick out a personal favorite Rory admits. But he does acknowledge that one of his favorite characters was Ray’s t.v. brother, Robert. “He’s an incredibly intelligent guy, and genuinely funny. Off camera he’s not the bumbler you see on the show.”
Rory acknowledges,“What Made Raymond work so well was that every single actor on the show was committed to it, and both on and off set they were the nicest people to work with.” (Continued on page 9)

Out of freewheeling sessions bursting with bold, genre-defying creativity and tongue-in-cheek humor, a six-headed monster named moe. emerged. Decades later, moe.’s tireless work ethic, DIY resourcefulness, infectious songwriting, and highly engaged fanbase—the Famoe.ly—have sustained a long, successful career. Yet, the band has never rested on its laurels as “jam band pioneers.” Averaging 100 shows per year and consistently releasing vital new music, moe. continues to push forward with its latest album, Circle of Giants (ATO), the group’s 13th release. moe. There’s No Place Like London...1980. Set in the chaos of early 80’s London, this gritty reimagining of Sweeney Todd drops the Demon Barber into a world of punk rock, protest, and crumbling industry. The city is loud, angry, and teetering on the edge, just like Sweeney himself. Fueled by vengeance and desperation, he returns to a darker, dirtier Fleet Street, where Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies are made with whatever’s left of society. With Sondheim’s iconic score pulsing through the grit and grime, this Sweeney Todd feels raw, real, and more dangerous than ever.”

BEAUSOLEIL 50TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW AT LANDMARK
There’s a great show coming up that’s basically a musical unicorn — Beausoleil and Richard Thompson are sharing The Landmark on Main Street stage for one epic night!
Beausoleil brings the soul of Louisiana straight to Port Washington. With two Grammy wins and a sound that’s part Cajun / part New Orleans jazz / part swamp pop (and all joy), they make audiences dance! Richard Thompson is a British folk-rock icon, guitar wizard, and songwriter extraordinaire. He helped invent British folk rock with Fairport Convention, and he’s even been honored by the Queen (yes, that Queen). His song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named one of TIME’s greatest songs ever. Fun Fact for Landmark regulars: that’s the song with the line “Red Molly said to James,” which inspired the name of the band “Red Molly!”

ANGELINA’S SERVES ITALIAN CHICKEN DELIGHTS

Sometimes it seems like there are 10,000 Italian Restaurants on Long Island. How do you find one that stands out? Sometimes it’s pure luck.
This is what happened to us on a recent Sunday. We were looking for a place on the South Shore that had been recommended. Not remembering the name, it seems like we checked out a hundred on Yelp. But one stood out. Angelina’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Lynbrook had great pictures of their food, very positive reviews and good prices. We decided to give it a shot. Lucky for us we did.
The restaurant is rustic looking, well kept and was beautifully decorated with Halloween favors. One look at their many pizza selections and we knew this would be something special.
by Richard Branciforte
We started off with an appetizer of calamari. This was a wise move, they were tender and tasty. The sauce that came with it was sweet and flavorful. A basket of garlic nuggets was brought out. I had never seen them in this shape but they were addictive. Each bite a mouthful, plenty of garlic.
Main courses were also a standout. The chicken parm was a unique take on a classic dish. It was a huge chicken cutlet, but this one came with vodka sauce, not the regular red sauce. The effect was fantastic. Couldn’t get enough. It comes with a side of pasta, we opted for the rigatoni with the same lush vodka sauce. At $25.99 a bargain. Plenty to take home for a second meal.
The chicken cacciatore, sauteed with white wine, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and peppers in a light marinara sauce was the jackpot. Instead of chunks of chicken, there was a large slice, almost a cutlet. Wow, the ingredients just melted together for a grand finale.

We regretted not having room for some pizza, there had to be at least 20 varieties. Something to look forward to on a return visit.
Our server/host Enrique returned often to make sure everything was being enjoyed. I would say so! The entire wait staff was on point, constantly refilling water and removing dishes. Angelina’s is located at 23 Atlantic Ave. Lynbrook 516-872-3477
A side note: even though we were stuffed on leaving, we did manage to have some excellent gelato just two blocks away at Gran Caffe Gelateria, located at 31 Hempstead Ave, Lynbrook. 516-887-2878. Great variety and a nice selection of other Italian goods that can be bought.
Lynbrook, you rock!

SPORTS BEAT

It is ironic that the person who was most upset about the Mets failing to make the playoffs is a lifelong Yankees fan. I spoke with ESPN CEO Jimmy Pitaro who was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame last month. His network, the Worldwide Leader in Sports, had the TV rights for Major League Baseball’s wildcard-round playoffs.
“Were you throwing things at your television set when the Mets were eliminated by the Miami Marlins?” I asked Pitaro. “I am not a Mets fan,” he replied. I then responded, “I am talking about business.” Pitaro quickly dropped the facade as he rolled his eyes and said, “I know. The ratings!” He acknowledged that a Mets-Dodgers playoff round would attract far more viewers than the Cincinnati Reds would bring to the table.
The Philadelphia Phillies were beaten in the National League Division Series for the second straight year. At least, the folks at “Abbott

The episode, titled “Ballpark,” was filmed during an actual game between the Atlanta Braves and the Phillies. As fate would have it, Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs that night. He made a cameo appearance at the end.
Even if you are not a passionate baseball fan, it is fun to watch the FOX MLB studio show before and after each game because of the humorous interplay between David “Big Papi” Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter who plays the straight man but does get off some good quips.
There were many eyebrows raised when ESPN invested $85 million over five years to get the services of Pat McAfee. That is money well spent. McAfee has provided ratings during the moribund afternoon period at the Worldwide Leader in Sports. In addition, he has brought more eyeballs than ever to ESPN’s College Gameday, where you never know what he is going to say, or do, next. No other broadcaster can work up the live crowd of college football fanatics the way McAfee can. It is the main reason the WWE sought him out to do commentary on their big shows as well.
NBC Sports, which lost broadcast rights to the NBA 23 years ago, has understandably made a big deal about getting them back effective at the start of the 2025-2026 season. “Rock” is the slang term many players use for a basketball. The NBA and NBC commissioned artists in each NBA locale to

ELLINGTON’S SACRED MUSIC
Here’s a chance to listen to what a legendary jazz composer and band leader described as the most important thing he’d ever done. The 85th Annual Show Goes on at Colden Auditorium on Dec. 14.
The Queens College Choral Society (QCCS) presents Duke Ellington, The Best of the Sacred Concerts at Colden Auditorium in Flushing on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4pm.

Offered via a collaboration between Queens College’s Aaron Copland School of Music (ACSM), the Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM), and a few special guests, this 85th annual winter concert features 17 selections—i.e. “Come Sunday” and “David Danced”—from Ellington’s three “Sacred Concerts.”
The program is about 2.5 hours with an intermission.
More than 100 QCCS members will perform. The rhythm section and vocalists will consist of ACSM students, and LAHM will provide an all-star orchestra led by Artistic Director of Programs Bruce Harris.

NBC exhibited them just outside their headquarters for five days before the start of the NBA season. It was cleverly called “30 Rocks at 30 Rock.” NBC also revived the “Roundball Rock” theme composed by Garden City native John Tesh.
It will be interesting to see which team wins more games in their respective seasons: the Brooklyn Nets or New York Jets.
I am old enough to remember when the initials “AI” were synonymous with NBA star Allen Iverson instead of artificial intelligence. Prime Video has released a three-part documentary on the NBA Hall of Fame guard who came from a hard-scrabble background. It is simply called “Iv3rson.” The “3” cleverly replaces the “e” in his name because that is the uniform number that he wore throughout his playing career.

MOMI PRESENTS “AMERICAN WOMAN; REFRAMING ‘70’S
CINEMA”

From November 14 through January 4, Museum of the Moving Image will present the 27-film series American Woman: Reframing ’70s Cinema, a reconsideration of this legendary era, retraining the spotlight on the women, both in front of and behind the camera, who equally made filmmaking what it was.
When one talks of the venerated American cinema of the 1970s, the same titles invariably come up: The Godfather, The French Connection, The Conversation, Chinatown... and that’s just the tip of the uber-male iceberg. The American Woman series flips the script to explore American cinema during the cultural ascendance of second-wave feminism and the megastars and filmmakers who shaped the period.
American Woman: Reframing ‘70s Cinema centers on icons such as Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross; critical darlings like Diane Keaton, Gena Rowlands, Pam Grier, Diahann Carroll, Sissy Spacek, and Barbara Loden; trailblazing filmmakers such as Barbara Kopple, Elaine May, and Claudia Weill, fiction and documentaries alike.
Throughout the series, screenings will be presented with a host of special guests and conversations around these unforgettable films, some of which remain provocative to this day, all of them worth seeing on the big screen.
Museum of the Moving Image is located at 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria for more information about MoMI, visit movingimage.org.

Iverson admits he was immature when he played, and he gave his Philadelphia 76ers head coach, former Long Beach High School star Larry Brown, a tough time. Brown suspended him for missing practices which was something Iverson could not comprehend. “It’s not a game! It’s not a game! It’s practice!” Iverson famously said. Comedian Kevin Hart spoofed that in a recent Chase Visa TV ad which featured Iverson.
The St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball team was ranked #5 in the nation in preseason Associated Press coaches’ poll. SJU head coach Rick Pitino was happy for the recognition but understandably took it with a grain of salt. Pitino did credit the team’s top booster, St. John’s alum Mike Repole, for helping to provide the funds to attract top-tier talent.
I spoke with his star player, center Zuby Ejiofor, if playing in New York has translated into endorsement deals which are now available to all college athletes. Ejiofor would not name any deals he currently has. “I am open to all offers!” he told me with a laugh.
Few sports stories are as mystifying as former Jets QB, and current FOX Sports NFL analyst, Mark Sanchez being hospitalized for a stabbing, and then getting arrested for his part in the altercation with his assailant. An Interview With Rory Rosegarten (cont. from pg 4)
Okay, so Rory, a Long Island boy, whose father was once mayor of Great Neck Plaza, didn’t fall victim to the Hollywood siren. “I loved being in Hollywood, the people, the energy, the fun. But my family is here, and this is where I want to be.” Rory commuted to LA to work part time for 28 weeks a year for nine years. So he has seen it all.
With the new Raymond interest and the CBS Special airing on November 28th, Raymond is in the spotlight for now. But what of the future for Rory?
He still manages Ray and Brian Regan. He is working on a Joey Ramone bio pic for Netflix with Pete Davidson starring for Netflix, and is involved with an animated picture that Brian Regan wrote.
What is Rory’s philosophy? “Do something that is creative, do a good job, and you’ll make money. Yes, it is much harder now, but the next Ray or Kevin James is out there, waiting for the “big” chance. “
And if you know that person, send them over to Good times. I have a few people they can interview.
How do you sum up Rory Rosegarten? Like Ray Romano, he’s just a regular guy like you or me with a love of family and Long Island. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

BAD WOLVES DELUXE EDITION “DIE ABOUT IT”

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and “British Invasion” pioneers, The Zombies, released Odessey & Oracle Mono Remastered via Beechwood Park Records. The album, the first of four definitive physical reissues from their catalog, includes the classic songs “Time Of The Season,” “Care of Cell 44,” and “This Will Be Our Year” The release, which coincides with The Zombies’ documentary, Hung Up On A Dream, marks the first time the band’s original mono mix, remastered from studio tapes, has appeared on LP since the record’s British issue in 1968, presenting the album as they originally intended it to be heard. The album is available on all formats here.
Recorded primarily at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios in 1967, Odessey & Oracle was self-produced in Mono on a shoestring budget by primary songwriters Rod Argent (keyboards/vocals) and Chris White (bass/ vocals).
The Zombies’ four surviving founding members, lead singer Colin Blunstone, keyboardist Rod Argent, bassist Chris White, and drummer Hugh Grundy, along with Helen Atkinson, acquired the rights to their catalog last year from Marquis Enterprises Ltd., the independent UK production company they originally signed with as teens in 1964.
38 SPECIAL “MILESTONE”

38 Special, the classic southern rock band behind worldwide hits such as “Hold On Loosely” and “Caught Up In You,” have released their new album Milestone. In celebration of the band’s 50th anniversary, their first new music in over 20 years features guests and co-writes with Pat Monahan (Train) and Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner-Overdrive / The Guess Who), and longtime collaborator Jim Peterik (Survivor, Sammy Hagar, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick).
Along with the album’s release 38 Special shared a visualizer video for “So Much So Right.” Co-founder and frontman Don Barnes says, “‘So Much So Right’ is of course about the moment of raw passion, but it is more than that. It also speaks to how a man feels when he’s found his partner for life. She can make so much so right!”
As 38 Special enters its sixth decade together, the music continues with Milestone. Fueled up on snarling guitars, anthemic melodies, and the desire to break new ground, they update their sound for the 2020s, bridging the gap between past and present without forgetting their rock & roll roots. Lead single “All I Haven’t Said” earned widespread acclaim.

If that’s not enough good news for you, there’s the release of new Foo Fighters song “Asking for a Friend.” Featuring a decidedly darker melodic approach than the smash hit “Today’s Song,” “Asking for a Friend” ratchets up the energy and intensity of its predecessor in favor of hypnotic opening verses that build and explode into impassioned refrains of “What is real? I’m asking for a friend…” By the time the song’s final breakneck rave-up screeches to a halt with a throatshredding “Or is this the end?”, FF fans of all ages will find themselves joyfully bludgeoned into submission.
