SPORTS BEAT

One of the few fun moments of the Mets 2025 season was last month’s Alumni Game Classic which was basically “Old-Timer’s Day” with a hipper name. Many of the players, such as pitchers John Maine and Mike Pelfrey, don’t look different from their playing days.

I joked with Maine that Mets President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, would sign him for the final two weeks of the season if he pitched well in the Alumni Game since the Mets starting pitching had been so awful. “Tell him I need a couple of weeks to stretch out my arm!” he laughed.

Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Jose Reyes were members of the 2007 Mets who blew a seven-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies with seventeen games remaining in the season. Given the Mets’ freefall for the least three months of the 2025 season, it was only natural they were asked by the press to recall their memories of

that ignominious September. They showed grace, but they could not come up with a reason for the collapse.

While the Mets had a disappointing year on the field, they did put out a documentary, “11 Days In September,” on their YouTube channel, which deserves an Emmy. “11 Days” recalls the events of September 11, 2001, and its immediate aftermath. The footage of Shea Stadium being used as a storage and staging area, with Mets manager Bobby Valentine packing boxes of food and supplies for first responders will bring back haunting memories for many.

The New York Liberty had a season like the Mets. They got off to a scorching start winning their first nine games, but then the injury bug hit as their top three stars: Sabrina Ionescy, Jonquel Jones, and Breanna Stewart all missed games. It was not surprising they lost their first-round playoff series with Phoenix Suns. In a case of “What have you done lately?” the Liberty dismissed the team’s head coach, Sandy Brondello, even though the Liberty won the WNBA championship the previous year.

ESPN announced that its long-running, goodnatured debate show, Pardon The Interruption,” hosted by Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser, who grew up in Lynbrook, has been renewed for another three years. There was speculation the show could be on the chopping block since its lead-in, “Around The Horn,” was cancelled after 23 years this past May.

The late Roberto Clemente was both a Hall of Famer as a baseball player and as a humanitarian.

A new film on his life, “Clemente,” is playing in select theaters. While it is fun to see highlights of his playing career, and hearing actor and Pittsburgh native Michael Keaton recall watching him play at Forbes Field, it is a learning experience to hear of the disrespect the media gave him at the time. He was livid that Topps made a baseball card of him with the Americanized “Bob Clemente” instead of his given Spanish name.

The Worldwide Leader in Sports also debuted its latest E-60 documentary, “The Many Lives of Lane Kiffin.” Few coaches in either the NFL or the NCAA courted controversy the way Lane did, as can be attested by the number of times he has been hired and fired, as well as the many feuds he has had over the years with his colleagues. It can be viewed on the newly developed ESPN app.

Another documentary well-worth your time is Prime Video’s three-part ‘Cocaine Quarterback,” which details the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction life of Owen Hanson who went from Redondo Beach volleyball star to being a walk-on player for the University of Southern California Trojans football team to being a multi-millionaire drug kingpin in the league of Pablo Escobar and El Chapo. amazing is that Hanson earned an MBA degree while being incarcerated in a maximum-security prison in Colorado. It was there that he created his health snack company, California Ice Protein. “I am making bigger profits now than I did with illegal drug trafficking,” Hanson chuckles at the end of this strange, but kind of inspiring, story.

Peyton and Eli Manning are busier now than when they were playing in the NFL thanks to their media powerhouse, Omaha Productions. The

Manning brothers are behind the new Hulu series, “Chad Powers,” which stars Glen Powell as the title character who is a disgraced former QB who uses prosthetics to create a new identity so he can return to the college gridiron in the hopes of being drafted by an NFL team.

They are also the creative force behind “Undercovers,” which has the same premise as the old CBS show, “Undercover Boss.” In the series, current NFL stars go undercover as regular 9 to 5 Working Joes and then surprise their fans. Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson are the stars of the first two episodes.

Justin Jefferson, along with Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, is also starring in Pepsi’s “NFL Tailgating” advertising campaign for Pepsi Zero Sugar which is aimed at guys who avoid diet soft drinks. Its new formula has eliminated the aftertaste which has plagued most diet sodas.

JIM HAGGERTY’S UNNATURAL CAUSES

Long Island filmmaker and Drunken Frankenstein frontman Jim Haggerty will premiere his first full-length feature film in over a decade - JIM HAGGERTY’S UNNATURAL CAUSES - on Halloween Eve (October 30th) at The Bellmore Movies.

The film is an all-new anthology of spooky tales that will thrill both his loyal fanbase and new fans alike. Genre favorites Tina Krause and Debbie D star alongside Carnivore A.D. vocalist Baron Misuraca in this outlandishly fun spook-show full of thrills, chills, dark humor and twists galore that will kickstart your Halloween weekend!

And for Haggerty not only is this a great way to usher in Halloween, it’s also a big personal milestone as October 30th not only marks the 25th anniversary of premiering his first film THE SLASHER on Long Island, but this is the first film he worked on with his son Steven.

JIM HAGGERTY’S UNNATURAL CAUSES premieres on Halloween Eve (October 30th) at The Bellmore Movies at 22 Petit Avenue in Bellmore at

hour Brooklyn Nets Media Day special on the YES Network. Knowing the Nets could very well be the NBA’s worst team, they avoided asking Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez about how many wins he expects the Nets to get and instead spent most of the time talking about player development. They then had to deal with Nets star Cam Thomas who gave them one-word answers. Thomas will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, and he looked like he would rather have been getting a root canal.

7PM, tickets are $15! Haggerty and many of the cast will be in attendance.
