HOT TIPS

STONY BROOK 30TH FILM FESTIVAL

The Stony Brook Film Festival (SBFF) released the full schedule for its milestone 30th anniversary, from July 17–26 at Staller Center for the Arts. The festival will showcase 36 films from 19 countries, including world premieres, U.S. debuts and exclusive screenings that can only be experienced in person on the region’s largest screen.

The festival is more than a cinematic event, it’s a cultural experience. Two feature films each evening — each preceded by a short film — are shown on Staller Center’s 40-foot screen, often followed by intimate Q&As with the filmmakers, cast and crew.

The 2025 Festival kicks off with the East Coast Premiere of The Ties That Bind Us, a surprisingly realistic film in which a set-in-her-ways 50-something single woman finds herself in a slowly shifting relationship with two children who live in her apartment building. This intimate, poignant and joyous film wrestles with the question of what defines family.

Other must-see films include the unique Animale, featuring SBFF favorite Oulaya Amamra. In this Western/horror/ mystery from the South of France, a bull-racer notices disturbing changes occurring around her following an injury. And music fans will enjoy the light-hearted biopic Midas Man about Beatles manager Brian Epstein.

Stony Brook Film Festival pass options include a VIP Gold Pass and a Regular Pass, granting access to all 10 days of the festival, and the Flex Pass. Single tickets are also available..

SPORTS BEAT: “SAME OLD SENGA STORY”

Mets fans had to be thinking of that classic Yogi Berra line, “It’s deja vu all over again,” when Kodai Senga suffered a hamstring injury last Thursday trying to make a play at first base. The same thing happened a year ago. Senga wound up missing the second half of the 2024 season. The initial prognosis is that this leg injury is not as severe as last year’s, but the hamstring recovery timetable is always uncertain.

Senga’s injury was a major reason the Mets finished third in the National League East and qualified for the playoffs on the last day of the season. The good news for the Mets is they are better positioned this time. David Peterson has been enjoying his best season at Citi Field and is showing why he was the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. Sean Manaea, who was the Mets ace in 2024, will be returning to action after rehabilitating from a spring training lat injury.

The Five Borough Mascot Race, which takes place in the middle of the third inning at Citi Field, has quickly become a fan favorite. The Bronx, which is represented by a giraffe in honor of the Bronx Zoo, is still winless. A Yankees executive told me that if he were the Mets he would never let the Bronx win a race. No word yet as to whether Attorney General Pam Bondi will ask the Justice Department to investigate.

Last month, after taking it on the chin yet again, the Bronx Giraffe held up a sign saying, “Want to race, Teddy?” It was a clever nod to the Washington Nationals popular presidential mascot race where Theodore Roosevelt’s likeness brings up the rear.

SUMMERTIME THEATER

I cannot remember the last time I heard people scream out loud at the theater -- but audience members did just that during a shocking plot twist in Abby Rosebrock’s riveting new comedy-drama “Lowcountry,” commissioned by the Atlantic Theatre Company. Set in South Carolina, the twisted rom-com concerns a first date between David (Babak Tafti), a disgraced teacher, and Tally (Jodi Balfour), a manipulative failed actress and gig worker, meeting after extensive texting on Tinder. Each of these dysfunctional, damaged characters has hidden secrets and agendas that are slowly revealed by the play’s startling climax. Director Jo Bonney ratchets up the tension in this spellbinding psychological thriller. (Linda Gross Theatre) atlantictheater.org/production/lowcountry

Another new off-Broadway odd couple rom-com, Charles Randolph-Wright’s “Duke & Roya,” recalls in flashback the budding cross-cultural romance between an unlikely pair: Duke (Jay Ellis -- “Top Gun: Maverick” and HBO’s “Insecure”), an American hip-hop superstar and Roya (Stephanie Nur), an Afghan interpreter, who meet in war-torn Kabul in 2016 and attempt to overcome cultural divides and danger to find love. Warren Adams directs the cast which also includes Noma Dumezweni as Duke’s mother and Dariush Kashani as Roya’s father. (Lucille

president of communications, Jason Zillo, sixteen years ago, and it remains the gold standard in baseball community relations. The Yankees honor those who do wonderful things for others and tend to go under the radar. One of this year’s honorees was Rockville Center-based nonprofit Love, Nana, run by 87-year-old Joan Hyland, Love, Nana’s mission is to distribute baby clothing to families in need in the metropolitan area.

New York’s only championship pro basketball team, the WNBA’s New York Liberty, started out the year 8-0 but they could not have been expected to go undefeated. Good things ended when the Indiana Fever, led by Caitlin Clark, defeated Briana Stewart and Liberty, 102-88. The game was nationally televised on ABC which is a sign of how far the WNBA has come in terms of being desired sports property for TV networks.

The Indy 500 is another sporting event which has enjoyed a television ratings renaissance. This year’s race, which was won by Alex Palou, drew over seven million viewers for the first year FOX had the rights to it after having been on NBC for years.

The US Open returns to Shinnecock Hills in Southampton next June. Even if you are not a golf enthusiast you will enjoy “Stick,” starring the always welcome Owen Wilson as a former PGA star named Pryce “Stick” Cahill who gives up the sport after having a televised meltdown after shanking an approach shot into the water. Reduced to giving golf lessons to old ladies and selling overpriced golf clubs to those whose games will not benefit by them, Cahill’s life changed when he discovers a golf prodigy on an Indiana driving range. “Stick” airs on Apple TV Plus.

Lortel Theatre) dukeandroya.com/ Playwright Emmanuelle Mattana delivers a biting satire with “Trophy Boys,” in which she also plays one of the “boys” on an elite prep school’s senior debate team who, in the school’s championship match, must argue that feminism has failed women. In a casting twist, Mattana has mandated that the roles be played by female, queer, trans and non-binary performers. Louisa Jacobson (“The Gilded Age”), Esco Jouley, and Terry Hu portray the other oblivious, privileged debaters in this sendup of masculinity, power and institutional privilege that starts in high school and later impacts the corridors of political influence. The American premiere is directed by Tony-winner Danya Taymor (“The Outsider” “John Proctor Is the Villian”) known for her skill at presenting teenage angst. (MCC Theatre) mcctheater.org/ tix/trophy-boys/ Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” the longest-running show in Broadway history, which closed in 2023 after 35 years, returns altered and reimagined as an immersive new production called “Masquerade” that in the vein of “Sleep No More” takes place in several rooms. Attendance rules during the six-weeks of previews state that the audience must “dress extravagantly” in white, silver or black and wear masks. Described as a “musical event” designed to simulate a masked ball, the new production is presented in a refurbished building with attendees moving from room to room and floor to floor. “When the iconic chandelier rises again above New York City, it will provide a dazzling display of over 30,000 crystals.” Tony-winner Diane Paulus (“Pippin”) directs a large cast that includes previous Phantoms Hugh Panaro (2000 performances) and Jeremy Stolle, and a former Christine, Kaley Ann Voorhees. Previews begin July 31. (218 West 57th St.) https://masqueradenyc.com/

The popularity of women’s sports on television has led Prime Video executives to green light “Surf Girls: International” which will debut on the streamer later this summer. The show will highlight professional surfers who are as adept at handling big waves and hanging ten as they are at beauty pageants.

Few college football programs have the illustrious history which the University of Alabama has. A feature length documentary on the Crimson Tide called “Nothing But A Winner,” will play in theaters for only one day, July 31. While we can expect a detailed look at Alabama legends as QB Joe Namath and head coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant and Nick Saban, it will be interesting to see whether the filmmakers delve into Alabama’s reluctance to integrate its football team in the 1960s.

UBS Arena is best known, of course, for being home to the New York Islanders. To be profitable, it needs concerts, and other events. Only July 20, WWE veteran tag-team siblings, Matt and Jeff

Hardy, will head a TNA card at UBS. Professional Bull Riding’s New York Mavericks will take on rival teams there during a three-day tournament from September 18-20.

The DC Defenders won the UFL Championship last month as they defeated the Michigan Panthers by a score of 58-34 at the St. Louis Dome. The UFL is a spring professional league which has

the blessing of the NFL, and a few players have gone on to make teams in the big league. UFL players are quite skilled but many lack the size needed to compete there. Nevertheless, the UFL has a good and fun product. Now that it has two seasons under its belt, they need to expand to bigger cities to draw larger interest. Birmingham and Memphis are fine, but the UFL is missing out by not being in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and of course, New York.

I remember going to a New York Gladiators game at MetLife Stadium in late February 2020. Over 20,000 turned out for the game on a mild late winter day. It looked like the XFL, the predecessor to the UFL, had discovered a winning formula; namely quality football at family-friendly prices. Many games were played on Saturday afternoons which are ideal for families to attend. And then the pandemic came, which was one of many businesses it destroyed.

THE LEMONHEADS RETURN WITH LOVE CHANT

The Lemonheads announced their first album of all-new original material in almost two decades, Love Chant, arriving via Fire Records October 24. Pre-orders/pre-saves are available now.

Recorded at São Paulo’s A9 Áudio with producer Apollo Nove (Rita Lee, Bebel Gilberto, Seu Jorge), Love Chant marks the welcome return of a justifiably legendary rock ‘n’ roll band, with founding singer-songwriter-guitarist Evan Dando joined by a bevy of friends and collaborators including J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Juliana Hatfield, Tom Morgan (as co-writer for “Deep End”), producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Antony and the Johnsons), Nashville’s Erin Rae, John Strohm of the Blake Babies co-wrote and played guitar on “Togetherness,” and Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond (a songwriter and performer on the swirling psych-folk gem “Roky”). Adam Green of cult New York favorites The Moldy Peaches also contributes as co-writer on the looselimbed country detour “Wild Thing.”

The album is heralded by the premiere of the hard-hitting new single, “In The Margin,” available everywhere alongside an official lyric video streaming now on YouTube. “In The Margin” is a classic Dando composition: half-broken, halfbeautiful, wrapped around a melody that disarms before it detonates.

DEAD CELEBRATE 60TH ANNY WITH “MEET-UP AT THE MOVIES”

Grateful Dead fans worldwide are invited to come together to celebrate the 60th Anniversary and the enduring legacy of the legendary band, as Rhino Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing announced the highly anticipated 2025 edition of “Meet-Up At The Movies.” This year, the annual theatrical event brings the Dead’s eponymous concert film, The Grateful Dead Movie, to cinemas and IMAX in select territories around the world beginning August 14 for a limited time only.

Tickets for “Meet-Up At The Movies” are on sale from at MeetUpAtTheMovies.com. Visit the event website to sign up for more information and ticketing details for cinemas and IMAX screens.

This fan-favorite cult classic film captures the band (Jerry Garcia, Bobby Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, and the welcome return of Mickey Hart to the Grateful Dead) during what was believed at the time to be their final run of shows: a five-night stand at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October of 1974, with the final night billed as “The Last One.” Blending stellar live performances, mind-bending animation, and interviews with band members and crew, the film has a rare focus on the band’s fans and their deep commitment to the “Dead Head” lifestyle.

RAPTURE OF THE DEEP 20TH ANNIVERSARY REMIX

It’s no secret that Rapture of the Deep isn’t the first album that comes to mind when listing Deep Purple’s classics – and while it was met with interest at the time, it gradually faded from view. Despite solid sales, the album arrived during a period when there was little spotlight on the world of classic rock, and over the years, Rapture of the Deep developed into an overlooked chapter in Deep Purple’s rich discography.

New insights by Kerrang! founder and Classic Rock magazine writer Geoff Barton pulls back the curtain on a time when Deep Purple were navigating an uncertain era in the music industry that saw the downfall of many once-great artist careers — and unravel the strange chemistry that gave birth to Deep Purple’s 18th studio album.

It’s all topped off with even more treats: a lineup of stellar guest artists!

The Blue Island, IL maestros—led by founding member Chip Z’nuff (singer, bass, rhythm/lead guitars), Jason Camino (rhythm/lead guitars), Luis Kalil (lead/ rhythm guitars), Daxx Nielsen (drums/percussion)—have once again produced a lush and hook-filled collection of songs, which include performances from fellow legendary musician friends Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, original Journey vocalist Robert Fleischman and current Journey guitarist Neal Schon, Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler (on the CD only), Steve Stevens, and Gunnar Nelson.

The closing track, “Shine,” features Fleischman, Schon, and original lead vocalist-guitarist/ co-founder Donnie Vie, who hasn’t sung with the band since 2013. Also, late original guitarist Derek Frigo—who passed in 2004—makes an appearance thanks to an old demo of “You Make Me Wanna Lie,” which also features a new vocal recording by Robin Zander of Cheap Trick.

METAL WARRIOR: THE CRUSHED SOULS OF OUR ENEMIES

Prepare for a sonic and sensory onslaught as Metal Warrior, the intergalactic force of heavy metal, invited fans and industry insiders to an exclusive pre-release celebration for their upcoming double album, The Crushed Souls of Our Enemies, set for release July 25th. The event took place Thursday, June 26th, 2025, at The Beer Authority in New York City.

Metal Warrior, led by the powerhouse songwriting duo of Greg Koch (founder of Stone Brewing) and guitar legend Keri Kelli (Slash, Night Ranger, Alice Cooper, Evolve Brewing/Aces & Ales), delivers a unique blend of thunderous riffs, rotating lead vocals, and epic storytelling. Rounding out the lineup are vocalist Sara Tobin (the voice of Queen Va) and graphic novelist Ben Fellowes, whose artwork brings the band’s universe to life.

The double album features 13 tracks chronicling the cosmic adventures of the band’s alter-egos—Pskydin, Queen Va, Torq, and Quanndamm—through battles, triumphs, and even a feline rescue mission (“Toxo (Pet The Kitty)”). The lead vocals rotate between Greg, Keri, and Sara, depending on the song’s narrative and character.

HELLOWEEN, the legendary German metal band with 21 gold and platinum awards and over ten million records sold, will release their highly anticipated new album GIANTS & MONSTERS this August. The album, now available for pre-order, follows their self-titled #1 2021 record and promises to be the most versatile and dynamic release of their career. Mixed at the legendary Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum, Netherlands (IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, DEF LEPPARD), GIANTS & MONSTERS reaffirms the band’s position at the pinnacle of the metal world.

Leading the charge is the album’s first single, “This Is Tokyo,” accompanied by a visual homage to Japan. The powerful, four-minute anthem features vocalists Andi Deris and Michael Kiske and delivers a chorus designed for stadium singalongs.

HELLOWEEN will celebrate four decades of metal mastery with a global 40th anniversary tour. The European leg begins in mid-October, and additional shows in Madrid and Bochum already on sale. Featuring an ultimate set list packed with surprises, the tour will showcase the band’s unparalleled legacy and ongoing creative power.

An indelible anthem in the time-honored Foo Fighters tradition, “Today’s Song” bristles with unbridled optimism from its subtle melodic intro through the peaks of its soaring crescendos. With lyrical themes of personal evolution and perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainty and the passage of time, “Today’s Song” is nothing short of a threeminute-fifteen-second epic.

RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS “SLIPPING THROUGH (NO KINGS)”

5X Platinum-certified alternative rock mainstays The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus have released “Slipping Through (No Kings),” their latest single and video for Better Noise Music. The urgent and impassioned rallying cry—written by lead vocalist, guitarist and founding member Ronnie Winter with producer and songwriter Matt Squire—compellingly looks at the societal chaos gripping America right now.

“Slipping Through (No Kings)”marks the second new music offering from The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus—lead vocalist, guitarist and founding member Ronnie Winter, his multi-instrumentalist brother Randy Winter, guitarist Josh Burke, bassist Joey Westwood, drummer John Espy, and touring keyboardist Nadeem Salam.

Fresh off the success of her viral freestyle “Yitty on Yo Tittys” multi-platinum, Lizzo drops a surprise new rap mixtape, My Face Hurts From Smiling, out via Atlantic Records. The 13-track mixtape continues a fearless new chapter, showcasing her evolution as a songwriter and artist, fusing sharp lyricism, humor, and hardearned independence into a sound that feels both fresh and unmistakably Lizzo. It’s a vibrant, no-holds-barred reintroduction that sets the tone for summer and solidifies Lizzo’s place in hip-hop.

The project opens with the song “Crashout,” in Lizzo’s signature tone, with a bold delivery and undeniable confidence. Anchored by the line “They just mad ’cause I got motion like a roller coaster,” the track is a reflection of her ability to shrug off the noise, blending confidence and wit with ease.

Also featured is “Still Can’t Fuh,” a collaboration with Doja Cat that Lizzo recently teased on TikTok. The track pairs sharp verses with a driving beat, spotlighting the two artists and their refusal to be defined by expectations. Another standout, “IRL” featuring SZA, delivers a vibey, dance-forward moment that Lizzo first previewed on Instagram. The two have effortless chemistry, with Lizzo’s commanding delivery paired with SZA’s signature blend of melodic vocals and rap-inflected verses.

STONES TRIBUTE TO CLIFTON CHENIER

On what would’ve been his 100th birthday, the music of Clifton Chenier is being heard more far and wide than he could’ve ever imagined. From the original recordings that put the King of Zydeco on the map to the covers from bands and artists he helped influence, Chenier’s fiery accordion and raucous, bluesy delivery have touched the souls of everyone from the fledgling aficionado to some of the biggest acts in history. One of the latter is returning the love to one of their early influences. As part of the upcoming album, A Tribute To The King Of Zydeco, The Rolling Stones went into the studio to put their stamp on the song that birthed a genre, “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés.”

With the help of Steve Riley on accordion, the two entities’ worlds are straddled seamlessly and jubilantly. “Both Mick singing in impeccable Creole French and Keith and Ronnie completely carving up the traditional approach with those signature licks and their iconic ‘weaving’ style sounds easy and playful,” says producer C.C. Adcock. “Man, this one sounds like they’re just running wild through the swamps with it!”
