COUNTRY DIRECTOR’S OPEN LETTER

Hello!

I am Park Dong Chul, Country Director of Good Neighbors International (GNI) in Vietnam.

First, I would like to thank our partners, government agencies, businesses, and sponsors, who have accompanied GNI over the past year.

I think the keyword for 2022 can be “new beginning” when Vietnam entered the recovery stage after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, issues like children’s mental health, child rights, climate change responses, or supporting low-income families still need attention. These are also issues that GNI has been striving to solve.

In 2022, GNI cooperated with the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to implement a nationwide pilot project - the “Development of social work and school psychology counseling in the period of 20222024” project based on previous projects since 2019. The Ministry of Education and Training also added this to the Ministry’s medium and long-term strategy. GNI has become a partner in implementing this strategy among NGOs in Vietnam.

Furthermore, GNI has continued to improve and expand the Environmental education programs for the students. We have also promoted the local people’s engagement by implementing environmental protection projects to respond to climate change, such as the “Green Light project” sponsored by the KIA Group, the “Improving access to clean water” project sponsored by the Korean Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology (KICET), or the “Improve the quality of Education and Safe Learning Environment for Children at Dong Loi Secondary School” sponsored by the KSFC Foundation, which will be inaugurated and handed over in 2023.

In addition, in 2022, GNI was honored to receive the Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister for many positive contributions to preventing the Covid-19 epidemic in Vietnam.

Good Neighbors is constantly striving to make the world a better place. With the significant achievements in 2022, we will continue maintaining and developing our activities in 2023. Let’s join hands to take action so no one is left behind and everyone will have a better future. We look forward to your participation and support in our activities.

Thank you!

Mr. Park Dong Chul Country Director Good Neighbors in Vietnam

WHO WE ARE?

Good Neighbors International (GNI) is an international humanitarian development NGO founded in Korea in 1991. Currently, GNI is working in 48 countries across the globe, focusing on inclusive community development and child protection.

GNI officially opened its office in Vietnam on June 1, 2005. We are implementing Community Development Projects in 06 areas, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Hoa, and Ha Giang with more than 17,000 sponsored children and over 200,000 beneficiaries. Additionally, GNI provides emergency relief and gives gifts-in-kind and necessities to 26 provinces and cities in Vietnam.

MISSION

Good Neighbors exists to make the world a place without hunger, where people live together in harmony. Good Neighbors respects the human rights of our neighbors suffering from poverty, disasters, and oppression, helps them to achieve self-reliance, and enables them to rebuild hope.

CORE VALUES

1. We serve people in need beyond ethnicity, religion, belief, and nationality.

2. We promote self-reliance in the sustainable development for individuals, families, and communities.

3. We implement the rights of the child as top priority.

4. We prosper global citizenship in mutual respect.

5. We organize local volunteers to contribute in developing their own communities.

6. We e cooperate with all people who understand our mission and program.

7. We work with professionalism and pursue financial and operational transparency.

8. We strive to induce more people to join our work as Good Neighbors members.

HOW WE WORK?

Global Development Approach (GDA)

Good Neighbors established its “Global Development Approach” (GDA) to serve as its strategic direction for community development programs, to realize the rights of children, women, and community members. GDA is a human rights-based approach to community development, with eight Strategic Objectives (SOs): Freedom from hunger, Child protection, Education, Health, Environment, Communities that are inclusive and democratic, Social economy, and Humanitarian aid - which are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Good Neighbors’ Development Principles

We support the most vulnerable. We focus on the most marginalized and deprived children and women, who experience discrimination and social exclusion due to their gender, race, religion, class, or other social identifications. Directly and indirectly, GN offers support so that such people can live life without socio-economic or cultural discrimination, identify the underlying causes of structural inequality, and advocate for equality.

We raise awareness of human rights. GDA is grounded on the belief that all human beings are born equal in dignity and rights. An understanding of one’s rights and others’ rights can lead to transformative change. We enable children and community members to speak up as rights holders and strengthen the capacities of government and duty bearers to protect and fulfill the rights of people.

We empower people We understand empowerment as the result of people having the will and power to solve the problems they face. We support such empowerment by facilitating the establishment of community-based organizations led by children, women, and community members so they can speak up on their rights as agents of change and make their own decisions for the better.

We promote cooperation and solidarity. We encourage children and the community to be active in the programs to work together in solidarity and create the changes they want. We cooperate with community-based organizations, community leaders and local governments to plan, to implement, and to evaluate towards sustainable development.

One Warm Coat” – a campaign calling for donations to give warm coats to children.

Lung Van commune (now Van Son commune, Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province) has more than 60% of households in poor and near-poor households. Having a new warm coat on the Lunar New Year was many children’s wish here. Without warm clothes, many children would face the risk of pneumonia or schooling interruption.

From that, GNI launched the campaign “One Warm Coat” calling on individuals, organizations, and businesses to donate and provide warm coats to 396 children in Lung Van commune. After a month of raising funds, with the support of 54 donors, GNI gave coats to the children as special gifts for them during the 2022 Lunar New Year, with a total value of nearly 150 million VND.

Training on ecological agriculture and circular agriculture

In July 2022, GNI organized the “Training on ecological agriculture and circular agriculture” activities in Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province. The training was taught by Korean experts, with the participation of members of the pig farming cooperative and IG group in Mai Chau, the agricultural staff of Mai Chau district, and the entire GNI’s IG staff from 06 Community Development projects.

To raise awareness of ecological agricultural practices and to make use of available resources to make animal feed, members participated in many activities such as making IMO (Indigenous Microorganisms) and natural solutions to create a living environment for beneficial microorganisms for livestock and to prevent pests and diseases for plants; Exploring the model of raising chickens and pigs based on the natural method and solutions to increase economic efficiency; Learning natural farming methods and how effective this method was for the environment and household economy.

I found this course very helpful for us. These methods are very new to me. Hopefully in the near future, with the support of GNI, we will practice and improve the pork quality, so that the cooperative can develop more.

“Agricultural production in the ecological and circular model is one of the solutions to reduce the two biggest risks in agricultural production - the market and disease. Applying ecological agricultural practices, farmers can not only save production costs and create high-quality products but also protect natural resources (land, water), and the ecological system to develop sustainably. This training course is the beginning of the Eco-Agriculture program that GNI will organize to develop the economy and sustainably increase income.”

26 2022 Annual Report
The Green Light Project. - Mr. Tran Tien Dat, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Mai Chau district -

Limited access to clean water remains a challenge affecting the community health in general and children’s health in particular in rural areas of Vietnam. Although many achievements have been made in improving the clean water supply, according to statistics, the proportion of people in rural areas using safely-managed water services in 2021 accounted for 43.6%. The lack of access to clean water and sanitation problems contribute to increased rates of diarrhea, pneumonia, and parasitic infections.

Increase access to clean water for people.

In 2022, GNI finished the project “Building a clean water supply system” in Tan Bac commune (Quang Binh, Ha Giang) and Ninh Khang commune (Vinh Loc, Thanh Hoa) with a total value of nearly 2 billion VND. The Korean Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology (KICET) sponsored the project.

In Tan Bac commune, GNI and KICET supported 01 drilled well, 01 water filtration system, 01 factory with 45m2 in width, 01 20-liter bottle filling and packing system, and sampled and tested water quality. By establishing a clean water operation and production management team, this project has provided water for households in Lu Thuong village and bottled drinking water for people in Quang Binh district through the establishment of a clean water operation and production management team.

Clean water is an essential fundamental resource, but not all areas have access to clean water. Water pollution makes it no longer safe to drink natural water directly. It requires the water source to be drinkable through a filtration system. In this project, we hope to establish a clean water management model operated by the local people, and expand this model in the future.

In Ninh Khang commune, GNI established the Vikawa Clean Water Production Service and Trade Cooperative after supporting the clean water supply system. The main product is bottled drinking water that meets QC06/BYT for customers for drinking water. Until now, Vikawa Cooperative has provided pure drinking water to 14 schools, 05 offices, 19 agents, and households in the area with approximately 10,000 regular users.
