OPENING LETTER Hello!

I am Park Dong Chul, Country Director of Good Neighbors International (GNI) in Vietnam.

First of all, I would like to wish all of our partners, children and local people in the project areas of GNI health and peace.

In 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic continued to pose significant impacts on our lives. And I think that, to overcome it, both efforts of the Government and organizations play an important role. Along with changing the awareness of community members, by the year 2022, the pandemic situation in Vietnam is gradually changed into “Safe and flexible adaptation to Covid-19”.

Considering the ongoing pandemic, GNI still endeavors to make a better world, where children can live happily. Our efforts shall be summarized and shared in the 2021 Annual report.

The most notable thing in 2021 is the efforts of GNI to contribute to improving child protection system at national level. We have discussed the policies related to the child protection system with the Department of Child and National Helpline 111. With the support of educational agencies, we have established and operated the school counseling room at schools to help children, teenagers and youngsters in psychological and emotional terms. With those positive and various activities, we expect that in 2022, GNI will continue improving the effectiveness of child protection work.

Activities of supporting facilities of GNI have brought about significant changes at schools. GNI supported to build and renovate the libraries in 06 CDPs so that students have more comprehensive chance for development. Along with that, income generation activities have brought hope for sustainable development for children, their families and communities. Also to support people during the tough year of Covid-19 pandemic, GNI gave necessities and medical supplies to provinces/cities of Vietnam.

In 2022, GNI plans to open a new CDP in Ho Chi Minh City. This show the vision to make GNI a development INGO in the whole country, and also to run child protection programs at national level.

Through that, GNI will strive to support more children and make the world a better place. We really look forward to your attention and support in our activities.

ABOUT GOOD NEIGHBORS Good Neighbors International (GNI) is an international humanitarian and development NGO established in Korea in 1991, now operating in 45 countries worldwide, focusing on Community Development and Child Protection.

GNI has officially operated in Vietnam on 1 June 2005. As of now, GNI is implementing Community Development Projects in 05 provinces/cities: Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Hoa and Ha Giang, with more than 16,000 sponsored children and more than 200,000 people as beneficiaries. In addition, GNI has carried out emergency relief, delivered aid goods and necessities to people in 26 provinces/cities in Vietnam.

NOTABLE ACTIVITIES IN 2021 GNI received the certificate of merit from the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) for postivie contributions to sustainable development of Vietnam in 2021 GNI was honored to be one of 49 NGOs with outstanding activities and positive contributions to the sustainable development of Vietnam in 2021. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the funding sources and project implementation progress, GNI managed to ensure the timely provision of social security support and aid for the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam.

Signed MOU with Department of Children’s Affairs regarding the supporting program for Child Protection in Vietnam for the period 2021 - 2023 The signing of the MOU was to strengthen the enforcement of child rights in Vietnam, contributing to creating a safe and healthy living environment for children, especially marginalized and disadvantaged children. GNI is committed to constant companionship and continuously striving to mobilize resources to improve the living quality of children in Vietnam.

Workshop “Share an experience of Korea and propose a model to provide one-stop Child Protection service in Vietnam” The workshop was attended by leaders of the Department of Children’s Affairs, representatives of the Ministry of Justice as well as agencies and organizations operating in the field of Child Protection in Vietnam. At the workshop, GNI shared about child protection and child abuse prevention programs in Korea, including the onestop child protection service model. Through the workshop, GNI hopes to contribute to improving the one-stop child protection service model in Vietnam.

Workshop “Build and operate the school counseling room” Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the Bureau of Education and Training of districts and more than 100 secondary schools in Hanoi attended the workshop. During the workshop, GNI shared experiences in setting up and operating a counseling room, emphasizing the role and necessity of the school counseling room for students, parents and teachers. Along with the support for establishment and operation of counseling rooms, GNI hopes to contribute to promoting school counseling work at schools.

Provided support for prevention of Covid-19 pandemic in Hai Duong, Ha Giang, Phu Tho, Ho Chi Minh City The 4th outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic (from April 2021) caused the pandemic spread rapidly and complicatedly across the country, severely affecting the health and well-being of local people. Considering that situation, GNI promptly mobilized and supported medical supplies and food to help people cope with the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. The total value of goods supported by GNI to prevent Covid-19 pandemic is over 25 billion VND.

Established Son Duong goat-raising cooperative (Son Duong District, Tuyen Quang Province) The Cooperative was formerly a goat raising group in Dung Giao Village, Dai Phu Commune, which was established and operated by GNI since 2015 with 100% members from Cao Lan ethnic group. Now, the cooperative’s herd has more than 600 goats. Each year, more than 8 tons of commercial goats are supplied to the market, increasing the average income for each member by about 95 million VND/year.

CHILD SPONSORSHIP Child Sponsorship is a supporting program for disadvantaged children based on a 1:1 relationship between a child and a sponsor. Through this method, GNI mobilizes funds from kind individuals and groups to help disadvantaged children, thus creating the best living and growing environment for them.

To promote participation of the community in child protection activities and ensure the timeliness of support, in 2021 GNI had 28 Volunteer networks in 06 project areas with 366 members, thanks to which children’s situation is updated more frequently and continuously.

In 2021, GNI also paid attention to and promoted fundraising activities that aim at supporting disadvantaged children. With desire to become a place where connection and love are shared to help children have a better beginning, GNI will transfer the money raised into direct support for children in the fields of education, health or essential items tailored to the needs of children and their families.

Sponsored children will be supported by GNI and sponsors until they reach the age of 18. GNI staff and volunteers often visit children at home and school to update their development information, understand the needs of children and their families in terms of living conditions and development. On that basis, GNI will provide children in a timely and appropriate manner.

Thank you so much for giving me a blanket, this gift is very meaningful. This winter I will no longer fear cold weather. Finally, I don’t know what else to say other than wishing you lots of health.

Previously 5 people in my family lived together in a cramped old house, now we can celebrate Tet Festival in a newly built house that still smells of lime, my family has never really felt such a meaningful Tet. From now on, I and my husband can safely go to work, do not worry about our children at home when it rains. I still remember one rainy afternoon, when GNI staff came to visit and encourage us to build a new house, it seemed that we couldn’t do that, but our green-shirt sisters gave us more motivation so that we strive to be like today. My family is very grateful to GNI for giving us hope for a better life.

CHILD EDUCATION AND PROTECTION Regarding education, GNI continues maintaining and implementing activities to ensure that children have the access to the best education. The improvement of facilities such as repairing of classrooms, construction of auxiliary works (canteen, schoolyard...), support of educational equipment have been provided in the project areas. Activities under the program “Reading Enrichment” are carried out by setting up friendly libraries and organizing reading competitions.

The program “Children’s Capacity Development Club” has also been maintained and expanded by GNI with the establishment of more Discovery clubs in the project areas.

Program “Youth Development Club” (YDC)

12 clubs were handed over to the schools 35 clubs were established with 946 members Thinh Lang Science Club with the initiative to supply clean water to the community Clubs are a place to not only nurture passion of children but also bring about very practical values. In 2021, the Science Club of Thinh Lang Primary & Secondary School had an initiative and successfully tested the water purification system from natural sources to improve the quality of water use for households. With support of GNI, this initiative succeeded in scoring fund from the Program of Water and Heath Initiative, as part of project “Local activities in Vietnam for Health and Environment” sponsored by US Agency for International Development (USAID) and was implemented by Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD). GNI also supported the remaining budget of the initiative.

Yen Mong commune is a commune where people face many difficulties in their life.

Although it is situated only 10km from Hoa Binh city, 100% of people in the commune used domestic water from natural sources, of which 55% did not have a source of hygienic water.

This initiative was implemented not only to help children and people in Yen Mong Commune have better access to water but also contributed to fostering children’s passion for creativity, encouraging and motivating them to participate in the project activities to solve the social problems.

Science Club of Thinh Lang Primary & Secondary School was established by GNI in 2017 and now has 24 members who are students of the school.

“I am very pleased that last year the Science Club’s water purification initiative was funded to replicate in households. Not only giving the practical hours at school, but this initiative has also brought benefits to the community.

The YDC program is really practical for comprehensive development, helping to develop the necessary qualities and competencies for students. Club activities help students strengthen cooperation in activities, self-study, creativity, and problem-solving.

In 2022, I hope that GNI will continue to support the YDC program so that students and children can have safe and useful playgrounds and develop their own capacities”.

Regarding child protection, GNI believes that all children should be protected from violence, exploitation and abuse. And to ensure that children can live safely in their communities, in 2021, GNI continued implementing the Child Rights Education (CRE) program, and coordinated with the Department of Children’s Affairs to organize sharing workshops in the sector of child protection, organize training about child protection on media channels. The most prominent activity is the project “School based mental health awareness improvement project in Hanoi City“ sponsored by Gyeonggi Province (Korea).

Training “Protection of children in communication channel”

Workshop “Child protection: From prevention to support” In 2021, GNI organized a workshop “Child protection: From prevention to support” with the participation of representatives of Department of Children’s Affairs (Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs), Ministry of Education and Training and organizations/units working in the field of child protection. At the workshop, the delegates affirmed the important role of prevention in the child protection system. In order for the prevention program to be more effective, it requires close coordination between levels departments - sectors/organizations as well as the companionship of families and schools.

The training took place in November 2021 for journalists who are working in media as well as doing work related to child protection. Assoc. Prof.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Oanh - Head of the Faculty of International Relations (Academy of Journalism and Propaganda), Mr. Dang Hoa Nam - Director of the Department of Child, Mr. Vu Van Dung - Director of the Center for Counseling and Communication.

Communication services, and representatives of more than 30 press agencies, social organizations attended the training. The training was conducted to provide those working in the media with the knowledge and skills required when working with children or when reporting information and images related to children on news articles and communication publications.

Project: “School based mental health awareness improvement project in Hanoi City” The project has been implemented by GNI since April 2021 to provide mental health support services for students of 04 secondary schools in Hanoi through a system of school counseling rooms following the 3C model - “Chuyên môn (Qualified) – Chuyên nghiệp (Professional) – Chuyên trách (Specialized)” at Le Quy Don Secondary School (Ha Dong District), Minh Khai Secondary School (Bac Tu Liem District), Ban Mai Secondary - High School (Ha Dong District), Nguyen Truong To Secondary School (Dong Da District). In addition, the project also raises awareness and skills for networks around students such as teachers and parents. The project is funded and technically supported by Gyeonggi Province (Korea).

INCOME GENERATION GNI support households to improve their income in a stable and sustainable way, thus creating a living environment that ensures comprehensive development for children, while helping Vietnamese farmers to achieve economic reliance.

In 2021, GNI continued supporting to operate and establish new IG groups/cooperatives. In addition to participation in training programs on production skills, business planning, visit to successful production models, etc. members of IG groups/cooperatives also received fund support from GNI for production development. To guarantee the consumption market for products as well as serve as serve as a basis for a value chain of agricultural products, GNI has connected many businesses with groups/cooperatives to build production areas for spices/medicinal plants such as ginger, garlic, ginseng, etc.

With support of GNI, the products of IG groups are now available at the stores of Lotte Mart, K-Market, Cooplus, Tam Dat Organic, etc. Especially, in 2021, GNI has supported Muong Pa Black Pig Cooperative to open a store in Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province. With stable output and guaranteed quality, the store always attracts a large number of customers coming to buy. This helps members feel comfortable and motivated to produce, and also contributes to attracting the participation of new members.

Son Duong Goat Raising Cooperative was established by GNI in 2021. Formerly as Dung Giao Goat Raising Group, after more than 6 years, with the determination and efforts of members, goat farming has been a livelihood activity that brings primary source of income for members.

“Joining the goat farming cooperative supported by GNI, my family’s life has more positive changes.

Before joining the cooperative, my family raised about 20-30 sows, the average income was about 50~60 million VND/year. In 2015, since joining the goat farming livelihood group supported by GNI, my family’s goat herd has increased by 30~40 sows, bringing in a double income increase compared to before (about 120~130 million/year). Currently, I am a member of Son Duong Goat Rasing Cooperative, my family currently has 70 sows, the total herd is 107 and the income is about 200 million/year”.

“In 2021, what made me happy most that the cooperative, with support of GNI, has opened Muong Pa food store in Mai Chau town. We were able to bring black pork to our customers in town as well as neighboring residents. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 pandemic, the promotion is still limited and we had not sold much products to tourists – our most targeted customer group. In 2022, we are waiting to reopen. Together with Muong Pa food store in Hanoi, we hope that Muong Pa black pork will be more and more known to customers.

Demand for Muong Pa pork is increasing, the cooperative is gradually developing production, expanding its scale, focusing on further improving product quality. I also hope that the cooperative will continue to receive financial and technical support from GNI for its members to invest in production”.

COMMUNITY HEALTH To contribute ensuring community’s health, in 2021 GNI continued to carry out many activities such as improving facilities and providing equipment support for medical stations; nutritional support for children; comprehensive gender education training; increasing access to clean water for people through drilling wells and supporting water supply systems in 3 villages of Vinh An commune, supporting for establishment and operation of Vikawa clean water production Cooperative. In particular, the environment protection education program started by GNI has gained enthusiastic participation of students.

Vikawa Clean Water Trading and Production Cooperative The Cooperative was established and operated by GNI since August 2021 to increase people’s opportunities to access and use safe drinking water through the construction of water purification works in villages. The main product of the cooperative is purified drinking water bottled in 19L, 500ml and 350ml bottles which are qualified for standard QC06/BYT applied for drinking water.

This is an activity sponsored by Korea Institute of Ceramic Technology and Engineering.

EMERGENCY RELIEF GNI constantly strives to contribute to poverty reduction and social security in Vietnam through emergency relief activities in many localities, especially those affected by natural disasters and pandemics. Emergency aid/relief can be money, medical services and supplies or necessities, clothes and footwear. By 2021, GNI has delivered emergency relief and aid to 26 provinces/cities in Vietnam.

Support for prevention work of Covid-19 pandemic in 06 provinces/cities

Support floating houses against flooding and necessities for Quang Binh Province

In 2021, Vietnam experienced the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic. To join hands to prevent the spread of the pandemic, GNI has donated medical products such as face masks, hand sanitizer, infrared thermometers, etc. to people in 06 provinces including Hai Duong, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa. In addition, GNI also provided food support for those affected by Covid -19 pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City.

Floating houses against floods are one of the effective solutions contributing to protection of property and people’s lives. In order to minimize damage of flooding, in 2021 GNI built and handed over floating houses, donated necessities (rice, cooking oil) to 30 disadvantaged households in Minh Hoa District; supported part of the cost of building floating houses and community activities in Le Thuy District. Total value of support is more than 1.2 billion VND.
