Alex Eletto breaks the tape and takes the win at the Ice Breaker Half Marathon!
Dear GLIRC Family,
It’s likely that you’re reading this on your phone or a tablet. Feel the heft of it in your hand. It has substance, but it probably doesn’t weigh very much at all. Even if you’re reading this on a traditional desktop computer, it’s something you can easily lift by yourself without any help. The future is here, and it is offering us quite a paradoxical experience – this issue is made up of bits and bytes. We’ve created something out of thin air. There’s no real physical shape, but, make no mistake – this issue of Footnotes is impossibly heavy. Within these pages, we are mourning two longtime members who helped make this community shine as brightly as it does – Todd Rowley, and Danny Badalament. Rest easy, gentlemen.
I did not know these men as well as any number of you did. I’d met them both only briefly at our events. Because of the letters, photos, and stories that poured in from all of you, I feel their absence. Grief is a deeply personal thing. We all internalize it differently, and we can never judge a fellow person on their grieving process – we do not live inside their heads or hearts. As raw and ugly as human loss is for all of us, I have had to stop and think that grief also offers us a paradoxical experience. It means that the universe saw fit to gift us with the chance to have loved. That, my friends, is stunningly beautiful. Your pain and that void you feel are opportunities to remember joy, and to reach out to others and fill your life with love once again.
As a community, we have gone through more than our fair share of loss in the last several months. I cannot tell you how to make sense of it for yourself. I can only tell you that on the days I am not sure I have the emotional fortitude for all of it, I pause to consider that I may not have tomorrow. Living in the past will do nothing for me. Remembering it fondly and plucking the lessons from it, though, will. Planning for the future is a wonderful thing, but waiting for the “perfect time” to do or have something means that I don’t feel like I am “enough” right now.
I am enough, though, and so are you! You deserve joy in the present. This moment is all that we have as a guarantee. We can choose to be frightened by that fact, or we can choose to settle in, and find extreme comfort in it. “Courage is not the absence of fear – it is the ability to be with it so you can move through it.” That quote is written on my office chalkboard wall as I type this, and today it is really speaking to me.
As I said above, the future is here. Right now, you are living on yesterday’s wishes. Find your joy, harness it, and be the light in your own world. You are not selfish for doing that. Rather, it’s the opposite. Your joy will spark joy in others, and it is the greatest (entirely free!) gift you can give.
For me, I am once again finding the joy in running. Taking on a management position for a running organization squeezed some of the fun out of running for awhile, if I am being fully honest. Taking hobbies and turning them into work can be a bit weird like that. I will finally be running New York in November after nearly seven years of entering the lottery and never being $300 poorer on drawing day! My New Yorkless past is over, and the future is nigh. I am so afraid I will not be able to run enough to complete another full marathon, and I am convincing myself to sit with the fear, and allow it to inspire me to do something about it in this moment. I will run as much as I can, and I will enjoy the process.
It seems a little graceless to mention our GLIRC events after tackling some very deep issues, but maybe it isn’t. We experienced losses as a community. If we lean on each other and put ourselves back together as a community, then this Club is serving its purpose.
For the rest of the year, I challenge you to do something that scares you. Feel every emotion and be with it. Discomfort can be incredibly grounding. If that “something” is a running event, possibly the Heckscher State Park 25k or 50k is something for you to tackle – we are giving you a full extra hour to finish if you aren’t running the championship event! Maybe you’ll run your first double-digit miles or even an ultramarathon in a few days! Perhaps you’ve never joined us as a volunteer before because you’re painfully shy. Come and make a new friend – you are never invisible or unimportant to us! You really like flat land? Maybe the wild hills of the Bond, Schoeneck, & King – Kings Park 15k are calling your name.
Whatever you do, do it fully. Be mindful of every minute. Whomever you love, love wholly, and do not hold back. Whomever you hate, change your heart. Make the phone call. Extend the olive branch. Do it today. Tomorrow isn’t real.
All of my “now” is dedicated to serving you, others, and myself as well as I can.

For Dan Badalament
By Michele Mac Mahon- Feb. 16 2023
I first met Danny in Sept. 2011. I had been working per-diem at South Nassau Communities Hospital, and one of my tasks was to assist in coordinating their 20 th Annual 5k/Run Walk. I had not been a runner then, aside from “running” for trains having worked a decade in NYC. Danny won in his age group, of course, he was very fast and dedicated his life to running since high school. He needed to take his trophy early he told me, as he was going to a street naming ceremony in Jackson Heights in memory of his friend. He was the first person I remember meeting who ran that hospital event, and it left a lasting impression on me. He was then 65-69 age group. I had no idea people ran in all age groups. I would see him, on occasion, at charity runs over the next 11 years, he was a tough competitor. He told me I did a reverse split in Lynbrook’s Fly With Owls 4 miler, temps were in freezing the 30’s with wind chills, he was proud and it made me want to run faster. I actually beat him at a John Thiessens 5k one year, I have the photo at finish line. He was only seconds behind me! I could not believe I would ever beat him. Of course, he beat me in other races afterwards, you just could not underestimate Danny. Despite physical injuries, it bothered him that he could not run as fast anymore, but it will happen to us all, in time, with age. But he was still out there. It was important for him to show up, which is 99% of success. I last saw him at the at The Bellmore Striders 4 miler last July, he was a spectator, happy to see his running friends he had not seen in years. I could tell he would have wanted to run, he was an esteemed member of the running community for 60+ years. Danny was living full time in Florida. In the past he’d tell me he’d do 5k’s in Florida but it was not the same as Long Island. I hope those who got to know him keep his tenacity and vigor with them to stay on the trails of running and also of life. May he rest in peace.

How to Treat and Prevent Achilles Tendonitis
By Dr. Jon DeGorter, Cold Spring Chiropractic
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel bone and is susceptible to overuse injury. The repetitive impact of running puts a lot of stress on the Achilles tendon, especially for runners who increase their mileage or intensity too quickly, or have poor running form. Other risk factors include flat feet, high arches, tight calf muscles, and worn-out shoes. Symptoms include pain and stiffness in the back of the heel, especially in the morning or after rest, and swelling and tenderness to the touch.
Treatment
Treatment for Achilles tendonitis typically begins with rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain medication to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy and orthotic inserts may also be recommended to improve foot and ankle mechanics. In severe cases, a brace or cast may be used to immobilize the ankle and allow the tendon to heal. Surgery should only be considered as a last resort.
Prevention
The best way to prevent most injuries, including achilles tendonitis, is by warming up before exercising and gradually increasing the intensity and duration of activity. To prevent Achilles tendonitis while running, it's important to gradually increase mileage and intensity, and to make sure you have proper running form. Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles and Achilles tendon can also help prevent future injuries. Also, running shoes with good support and cushioning can help reduce the stress on the achilles tendon.
If you are experiencing pain in the Achilles tendon after two weeks it's a good idea to see a sports injury professional who can evaluate your injury and recommend the appropriate treatment. It is important to pinpoint the factors that are contributing to the injury and devise a corresponding treatment plan. While physical therapy focuses on strength and coordination, chiropractic sports injury care improves joint mobilization, ensuring that all the joints are moving correctly in coordination with the soft tissue. Just as every runner is unique, every injury has different causes. The key is finding the specific area of tension and tightness in the hips, quadriceps, low back or abdominal muscles and getting that area to move better, along with strengthening and stabilizing the hip, knee, foot and lower leg.
Active Release Technique® and Graston Technique® involve intense active movement-based massage treatment, which sets it apart from passive massage or physical therapy. ART and GT promote faster recovery, restoration of normal tissue function and help prevent future injury. Active Release Technique and Graston Technique release the buildup of dense scar tissue which allows tissue to heal in the correct patterns to restore normal function and increase performance.
The techniques and therapy provided by Cold Spring Chiropractic are natural and non-invasive and have successfully helped many athletes come back faster from injury and return to pain-free running.

NEW TECH FOR RUNNERS
Recently tech for running has exploded. Power meters, carbon shoes, sleep trackers, watches, etc. But why do we need any of it?
SHOE PODS AND POWER
A power meter is a device that measures the effort level of a runner. More specifically, power is the measurement of how much work you are doing and how fast you are doing it, expressed in wattage. Similar to HR, wattage can take terrain, and hills out of the equation by purely measuring effort, and it can do it quicker than HR because it does not have to wait for your bodies response to the effort.
WHY POWER?
pOWER IS NOT EXTREMELY USEFUL BY ITSELF, BUT WHEN COUPLED WITH hr AND PACE IT CAN BE AN AMAZING TOOL TO HONE IN ON YOUR STRIDES EFFICENCY AND PREVENT LATE RACE BREAK DOWNS. For example, improving your cadence from 172 to 180 may help reduce your POWER BUT INCREASE YOUR PACE, which helps you conserve energy and strength throughout your race. power CAN ALSO TRAIN YOU TO RUN WITH LESS VERTICAL MOVEMENT. maintaining power OUTPUT BUT INCREASING PACE MEANS YOU ARE moving forward in the horizontal plane AND WAISTING LESS ENERGY!
NEW TECH FOR RUNNERS
Recently tech for running has exploded. Power meters, carbon shoes, sleep trackers, watches, etc. But why do we need any of it?
Bio Sensors
a bio sensor can read your bodies internal signals so you know exactly how much sodium and carbohydrate loss you need to replace to stay at the correct level for optimal endurance performance. They take the guess work out of hydration and sugar replenishment by taking minute to minute data of your specific condition.
WHY Bio Sensors?
They are scientific and Evaluates the biomarkers in your sweat. like a portable lab without the needles, they Analyzing your sweat moment to moment and Quantifying when, what, and how much you need to drink in realtime during your workout. They also enable you to conveniently see your body’s molecular glucose data in real time, Making sure that you take in the appropriate amount of carbs to avoid hitting that dreaded "wall".

NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS
Lynda Maniscalco- Congratulations to Steve Amoroso who completed the Miami Half Marathon on Sunday, January 29th with a time of 1:31:16. He was awarded for finishing 2nd place in the 55-59 age group field of 436 runners, and his overall place was 164 out of 12,487 total runners. Way to go Steve!!!
Bert Jablon- At the Stoplight Party 5K presented by Elitefeats at Eisenhower park on February 25th, Winning the 90+ Category once again, was non other than GLIRC's own Bert Jablon in a time of 1:05! Congrats Bert!
Mike Floman- I joined GLIRC in 2011…. Dan and I were in the same age group. We competed quite a bit until 2015,when I was injured and have not raced since then. At first I really was not close to Dan when we raced. I started running faster times and I always attributed it to Dan. He always encouraged me when we raced. Once I started running faster than him, whenever we raced he would say Mike you got this. Hearing about Dan passing really hit home to me personally. A true gentleman! RIP Dan
Neal Aronin- Ran with Danny in many races in Long Island and more recently ran with him in a race or two in Florida. He was always a winner in my Seaford Hot Chocolate Run in the 1980s, and always a winner as a fine human being. I’ll cert miss him. The memories will live on.
Bob Hoffman- He was a lovely man and a great runner. He ran every one of our SafeChild 5 K races for 17 years. And always won his age category.
Al Prawda- On January 7th I finished the Marine Park in Brooklyn in a time of 30:14. On January 28th I finished the Prospect Park Half Marathon in a time of 2:24:12. On February 19th I finished the Cherry Tree 10 Miler in 1:44 coming in second in the 75-79 AG.
Ice Breaker Marathon & Half Marathon
The Icebreaker Marathon and Half Marathon was one for the record books in 2023! We saw a great attendance for this no frills winter marathon and Boston Qualifier and runners were greeted with some special surprises for this years event such as a cheer section complete with signage and encouraging music and dancing to make the loops pass on by. New for this years event, runners would not take home their medals. Instead, their medals would be donated to Medals 4 Mettle Long Island Their hard earned medals that took some serious grit and determination to earn will now be donated to children in local hospitals fighting critical illness in honor of their bravery and determination in fighting their respective illnesses WHAT AN AMAZING CAUSE!
In the Men's Marathon event we saw Dominick Mignano take home the win in 3:10:34, Shawn Garbien take second in 3:19:53 and Keith Masso take home third in 3:23:01. In the Women's Marathon we saw Helen Huang take the win in 3:30:30, Jimena Sachdev take second in 3:43:45, and Julie Vodola take home third in 3:48:30.
A message from Robin Blosser (M4M LI): Making this event happen is something that I have always thought about, and GLIRC finally brought it to life! Many of our kids showed up to the race to volunteer and cheer on runners and it made the event so special to me to see people earning medals for our kids right in front of my eyes! It was a day I will never forget. Thank you GLIRC and THANK YOU to all the runners who finished and donated their hard earned medals to our kids, you are all extraordinary!
In the Men's Half Marathon it was Alex Eletto breaking the tape in a time of 1:20:28, secind place went to Joseph Jensen in 1:23:49, and third place was secured by Kevin Bartolotto in a time of 1:27:32. In the Women's Half Marathon it was Cristin Delaney-Guille breaking the tape in 1:27:54, Michiko Clarke took home second in 1:32:17, and rounding out the podium was Tara Farrell in 1:37:45.

MARDI gRAS 5 MILE RUN TO THE GREAT
SOUTH BAY BREWERY
The 2023 edition of the Mardi Gras 5 Mile Run to the Great South Bay Brewery saw a large turnout and an even larger after party! The day kicked off with a fast group out front as Emma Bradley lead the way for some time. Eventually the field would thin out and it was Shawn Garbien who would move to the front of the race followed closely by Michael Boyd, the two would run closely for some time before Garbien would finally take home the win 29 seconds ahead of Boyd. Rounding out the Men's Podium was Roger Geraghty in a time of 32:11. In the Women's race it was Emma Bradley who hung on for the win after those blaing fast opening miles, coming home in 32:29. Second went to Tara Fowler in 32:55 and rounding gout the podium was Lisa Argast in a time of 35:13. On course again this year was the crowd favorite "bead stop" where runners collected Mardi Gras beads that they could wear to the party!

After the race runners were greeted with one exceptional after party, and best of all, it was part of the solution to drunk driving with race proceeds benefitting MADD! HOW COOL IS THAT?! On hand there was a DJ to make sure the dance floor was packed, amazing food provided by Great South Bay Brewery, and plenty of drinks for all. In addition, Top Golf and a photo booth made for one seriously exciting event worthy of the Mardi Gras name! We hope all the runners who attended had a phenominal time and we hope to see you at more of our Brewery Runs coming up later this year!

Danny Badalament – 1943 – 2023
By Paul Fetscher, A running friend for 63 years.
I go back to a late summer afternoon in September 1959. My school, H. Frank Carey High School was up for our first Cross Country meet of the year against Valley Stream North. As for me, this was going to be my first Race EVER. The site was Valley Stream State Park. The course started behind Valley Stream Central High School.
As we warmed up around the lake, we were joined by some of the VS North Runners on their warmup. As you always want to know your competition, we asked about their runners. We were told not to worry about their supposed top man. He only had one lung. Well, how concerned would you be about racing against someone with only one lung?
The crack of the starter's pistol sent us off around the lake. The leader promptly became a green & white clad slender runner, convincingly separating himself from the pack. Now, remember, this was my first Race. I didn't know a lot, but how in the world could a guy with one lung be running away from us like this? Who was this Superman? I was a freshman. He was a junior. Who was this super athlete who simply ran away from our entire team? Dan Badalament!
The year before, Dan had contracted pneumonia and had a lung collapse. Apparently, it had not only inflated but enabled him to run faster than ever.
That was the start of the 1959 Cross Country season. One that would see him go on to win the Nassau County Class C Championship and go on to the New York State Championships, not just that year, but the next year as well. His outstanding high school performances garnered the attention of Steve Bartold, coach at St. John's University. That was the door to bring Danny to the outstanding Track teams with the likes of Walter Kueffner, Rich Hupe, and, of course, the 800 Meter Olympian Tommy Farrell.
After college, Danny took off a few years to focus on his work at EDO Corporation. He headed their SONAR Division as an engineer. After several years, Danny decided it was time for him to get back to running. Thanks to the Greater Long Island Running Club, he found good running and racing opportunities not far from home.
In the 1970's Dan came up to me at a race. "I don't know if you remember me …."
I interrupted him, "Danny Badalament, Valley Stream North, County Champion." He seemed shocked that I remembered. Yes, it had been a few years – but he was memorable. You always remember the people who first impressed you.
"You can't make new old friends" – Dolly Parton
As we reminisced about how dominant he was, he explained it away. "I was older."
Two decades later, I was beating Danny. Again, he explained it away. "I was older."
Danny became fully committed to the sport. Over the following decades, he became a regular fixture at Long Island races. He was always competitive, first overall, then later dominating his age group. He proudly competed in literally hundreds of races.
Not only was he a fixture at races but also at the awards presentation afterward. Dan was always gracious as presenters regularly struggled to attempt to pronounce his name.
BAD-lament, Be-daddle, Badel-mint and every once in a while, Ba-Dad-el-ment. He never complained about getting his name slaughtered, just as long as he got the right award.
One of Dan's favorite presenters was Larry Elovitch, an attorney in Long Beach. Larry was the perennial presenter at Long Beach races … and he could correctly pronounce "Badalament". Dan seldom missed any of the Long Beach races; Snowflake, Memorial day 10 miler; End of School, 4th of July and an array of other runs. You could always count on Danny being there.
Most of those races have a significant part, if not all, on the Long Beach boardwalk. Some of them also want out onto Broadway. The auxiliary police do their best to keep traffic away. However, in one of those races, Danny was running along with Maury Dean. Unfortunately, the driver was incapacitated and hit Danny. Fortunately, not hard. The police were on the scene immediately and arrested the driver, who failed his breathalyzer test.
Not every run was uneventful. Serious bicycle riders know that during the course of their careers, they are likely to break bones. It's not the falls that get you. It's the sudden stop – from 25 – 30 MPH. Such are the inevitabilities for bikers. But Runners, they are spared such fates. But runners? Not so. Well Danny proved me wrong.
There was a 5 K race in Baldwin. Danny got tripped at the start and went down. HARD! That resulted in a broken collarbone and bruised ribs. That explains why Danny always appeared to have one shoulder higher than the other.
After a couple of weeks, Danny was jogging around the block with his arm strapped up.
No, life isn't all about just 5 K races. Danny finally decided it was time to take a shot at the Long Island Marathon. Of course, the magic barrier Danny was seeking to break was the 3:00 barrier. As many have learned, the final few miles, or even the last 365 yards, can be quite the challenge. Danny's legs seized as the clock ticked down the final minute.
Savvy Maury Dean was on the sidelines yelling, "Run Backwards! Run Backwards". It worked! And Danny had his sub 3:00 marathon.
It's great to have peers over the years. You can race each other at 5:00 minute miles; 6:00 minute miles; 7:00 minute miles … Well, you get the idea. No need to embarrass ourselves further. And so it was with Doug Escher of Sewanhaka High School, Danny, and me. We raced into the present century in the '60s, '70s, '80s, and so on.
Somewhere it is written that you reach retirement age in Nassau County, and you have to move to Florida. Following that protocol, a couple of years ago, Danny and his wife Paula chose Boca Raton as their new home. You can take the boy out of the County …
Danny & Paula couldn't completely abandon Nassau and returned for a full month each year. Of course, it would have to be a time when there were races, inclusive of a Long Beach race. And so it was this past summer. It was a pleasure to place one place behind Danny in our most recent – and final Race together.
How can you honor such a decades-old friend? Well, the City of Glen Cove found a way. In 2005, Danny was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame, the only runner to be so honored. I was honored to be there to celebrate with him.
At the end of December 2022, Danny had an incident with difficulty in maintaining his balance. Despite receiving medical care for a cerebral incident, Dan continued to deteriorate, slipped into a coma, and ultimately passed.
Danny never forgot where he came from. He returned every year to Valley Stream North for their Spring Sports Dinner. There he presented the Badalament trophy to the distance runner who best-exemplified sportsmanship.
I hope there's a boardwalk in heaven. If so, Danny will be pleased.

The Rowley family has created this page in order to raise money for Todd's son, Nicholas Rowley, who is a junior at SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design. As you know, Todd passed away suddenly on January 25 and the family needs our help to support Nicholas in his pursuit of completing a bachelor's degree in film. Todd had been working very hard to pay for college each semester and was proud to not have loans for Nicholas or himself. Please consider a donation, any amount will help. Thank you so much.

TODD ROWLEY: GLIRC TEAMMATE & FRIEND UNEXPECTED PASSING
By Michael Robles USATF-LI Level 2 Endurance Coach
I have been writing for the GLIRC monthly running magazine since 2010, and this is by far the hardest article I have ever had to write On Wednesday, January 25 th , our community lost a tremendous athlete–member of GLIRC Racing Team–and even better friend, Todd Rowley He was not only a kind person and talented teammate of mine, but also an avid member of other sports communities, a tutor, a husband, and a father. This loss is heartbreaking, and I’ve struggled, alongside many others who knew him, to cope with this news This article is a tribute to a dear friend
I met Todd for the first time at the April 2009 Doug Wood 5K Trail run in Northport, where he had taken 2 nd place overall that day We started talking after the race and I immediately liked him He had a personable smile that warmed you up Todd was also very smart, yet humble, and would frequently pick your brain for information. I remember once directly after a race, he told me that he wanted to run faster He proceeded to ask me about my workout routine, and we conversed about the workouts he could do to become the runner he wanted to be That was Todd He had already been successful in his running but was still looking to improve
I was a teammate of Todd’s on the GLIRC racing team for almost 15 years His consistency made him the consummate teammate. You could always count on him to have a good race and give 100% of himself every time Over the years on the team, from mile races to half marathons, we ran in about 100 races together Many times, we were on the same relay together trying to get that win In that process, I realized how much I had in common with Todd We both loved to run and compete His love for craft beer, which we enjoyed after some races And his love for music (I remember him being so excited about seeing Hall & Oates) Todd wanted to enjoy life to the fullest, and he did Those were the good times
Over the last few years and with a pandemic dragging on, it has been incredibly difficult connecting with friends. It felt like we lost three years of time–time which could have been spent with loved ones like Todd Fortunately, this year, I was able to reconnect with him I was very fortunate to be volunteering at The Blue Pt Brewery 10 mile run on January 14 th A little bit past the 5 mile mark directing the runners, I was able to see Todd and cheer him on As he passed me, I yelled “Looking good Todd! Just hang in there! I’ll see you later and we’ll have a beer together ” At the after party, I told him how rough it had been to not have much company over the past few years, and invited him over for a Super Bowl party. I hadn’t had one for two years and was quite excited by the idea “Are you in?” I asked He then said, “I’m all in ” Little did I know this would be the last words and last time I would see my friend Those words are a fitting example of his spirit
I’m thankful that I was able to see him one last time I will remember all the good times with him on the GLIRC Racing team, and I know I share this sentiment with many others. I have never been as impressed as I was listening to what each family member and relative said about him at the wake The tributes, one after another, about how much he meant to so many people From his students that he taught, to his friend from high school that he drove hundreds of miles in order for him to express his love to his girlfriend, to the small but kind gestures of starting his wife’s car before she went to work His relentless ability to make sure he attended every event for his kids and nieces. I realize how important he was in many peoples lives and how much he will be missed Todd, you will never be forgotten
