Brick Paver Repairs

Division Highlights

Brick Paver Repairs

Historic Downtown Glendale

City Streets crews have recently completed repairs to uneven brick pavers in the Glendale Historic Downtown area, addressing community concerns about pedestrian safety Key areas, including walkways near businesses and public spaces, were thoroughly inspected and restored to ensure smooth transitions while preserving the distinctive brick aesthetics of our historic district These updates not only enhance pedestrian safety but also help maintain the welcoming character of our downtown area Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve our City's infrastructure!

HAWK Activation

High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK)

The City recently completed two pedestrian signalized crossings, also known as HAWKs. One is located on Bethany Home Road, just east of 58 Avenue, and the other on Camelback Road, just east of the 53 Avenue intersection Both projects were funded through a grant from the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Roadway Safety Program (RSP)

The projects included the installation of pedestrian signals, roadway improvements, signing, striping, and other miscellaneous construction activities. At the Bethany Home Road location, a decorative median fence was also built to discourage midblock crossings between the 58 Avenue and 59 Avenue intersections.

These projects provide pedestrians with safe crossing points on two roads that are traditionally heavily traveled. The new HAWK installations are part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety within Glendale.

New RRFB Crosswalks

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon

The Transportation Department recently completed the installation of two Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) on Sack Drive east of 67 Avenue and on north Kent Schluck Way south of Royal Palm. This brings the number of RRFB installations within the City to 6 locations.

A RRFB is a pedestrian-activated warning device that consists of yellow LED rectangular flashing lights that draws attention to the crossing and provide information to approaching traffic that a pedestrian or a bicyclist is attempting to cross the roadway

RRFB’s have shown that there is an improved “yield to pedestrian” compliance from motorists as well as increased visibility and awareness of pedestrians and bicyclists who wish to cross the street.

Updated Crosswalk Lighting st

Orangewood Avenue & 91 Avenue

The intersection at west Orangewood Avenue and north 91 Avenue is a busy intersection as Raymond S. Kellis High School borders this intersection from the northeast. There is a crosswalk at this intersection on the eastside of north 91 Avenue for pedestrians crossing west Orangewood Avenue The Transportation Department was notified by Raymond S Kellis High School that it received numerous complaints that there was a lack of lighting at this crosswalk

The Transportation Department responded to the request by investigating to determine if the amount of light was sufficient at the crosswalk by using lighting design software The analysis confirmed that both the amount of light and the distribution could be improved

The Transportation Department proceeded to improve the lighting of this crosswalk by increasing the wattage/mounting heights of the fixtures and adding an additional light to an existing streetlight pole. With the newly added lighting, safety for travelers along the road has increased as it has been proven that increased lighting reduces the number of fatalities.
