Welcome to the Festival

We’re thrilled to welcome you to the 61st annual Reno Jazz Festival!

This year’s landmark event is a celebration of jazz music like no other and marks our return to a completely in-person event since the start of the pandemic. The 2023 Festival is brimming with new content and initiatives that embody our efforts to build an equitable future of jazz.

Faculty and students from the Berklee College of Music’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice are an integral part of the Festival. Check out their workshop and conversation focused on setting new standards in jazz, and don’t miss their stellar student quartet in performance Friday (daytime) and Saturday night during the Festival Showcase.

We’re kicking off the packed agenda with a student-only jam session on Thursday, April 27 at 10pm at the Laughing Planet on N. Virginia Street. We hope your students will join us for this hands-on learning experience. Friday evening features our Pro Jam Session with an all-star house band of saxophonist Caroline Davis, pianist Tal Cohen, bassist Richard Lloyd Giddens Jr., and drummer Tina Raymond.

Our 2023 Festival composer is the inventive and improvisational rock star saxophonist, clarinetist and woodwind specialist, Julian Tanaka. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from Julian during his workshop and attend his Meet + Greet. This is part of our commitment to commission new music from underrepresented communities in jazz.

Two exciting headliner concerts feature groundbreaking trumpeter, Marquis Hill, performing alongside drummer Damion Reid, bassist Junius Paul, vibraphonist Joel Ross and pianist Jahari Stampley. Thursday evening, Joel Ross opens the Festival during a full-length set alongside the University’s faculty ensemble, Manzanita Quintet.

Plus, the Festival is packed with 18 workshops led by the country’s foremost jazz artists and educators.

There’s no doubt, it’s the participating students, representing 62 schools and 112 ensembles, who make the Festival a vibrant epicenter of jazz. Thank you to each of you for participating in and supporting the future of jazz and music education.

“This year’s landmark event is a celebration of jazz music like no other … brimming with new content.”

61ST ANNUAL RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL [ 5 ]

THURSDAY APRIL 27 • 7:30PM

NIGHTINGALE CONCERT HALL

Though still in his 20s, Joel Ross is a vibraphone virtuoso whose dynamic single-mallet playing style wows audiences. His artistry on the vibes landed him a recording contract with the legendary Blue Note label, on which he’s released a trio of albums: “KingMaker,” “Who Are You?” and the newest, “The Parable of the Poet.” The in-demand collaborative musician regularly performs across the country and around the world. In his live sets, Ross showcases a

lyrical intuition that’s equally grounded in melody and phrasing. The steadfast improviser plays the moment, allowing moods to set, linger and transform. Ross recently became one of the youngest artists to earn a coveted Residency Commission from The Jazz Gallery and a spot in The Jazz Gallery All-Stars band, ultimately performing live at The Kennedy Center. In 2021, he enjoyed a residency at the Roulette Intermedium for Jazzfest Berlin, during which he premiered original work.

JOEL ROSS

MANZANITA QUINTET +

Joining vibraphonist-composer Joel Ross on stage is Northern Nevada’s very own Manzanita Quintet — Adam Benjamin, Peter Epstein, Hans Halt, Andrew Heglund and Josh D. Reed. Comprised of core faculty members of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Program in Jazz & Improvisational Music, Manzanita Quintet (formerly The Collective) is recognized as one of the most imaginative and distinctive jazz ensembles in the northwestern U.S. The talented group has released four albums and is actively performing, recording and teaching throughout the world. Manzanita Quintet’s latest album, “Osmosis,” released in February 2023, features a set of fresh, original compositions.

“ … Joel is not only one of the preeminent instrumentalists of this era, but he is one of the greatest musical visionaries of his generation. ”

MARQUIS HILL

M NEW GOSPEL REVISITED

arquis Hill is a stunningly gifted trumpeter, composer and bandleader with a soulful, highly textured tone. His sound is somehow both deeply distinctive and a tour through jazz trumpet history. Performing alongside him will be Damion Reid, drummer; Junius Paul, bassist; Joel Ross, vibraphonist; and Jahari Stampley, pianist. Since winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in 2014, Hill has garnered glowing coverage

in outlets like The New Yorker, The New York Times, JazzTimes, NPR Music and DownBeat. The internationally renowned musician has guest performed with a who’s who list of jazz musicians — Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James and more. On acclaimed albums like his latest, “Modern Flows Vol. II,” and his 2016 breakout project, “The Way We Play,” Hill and his working band, the Blacktet, use their next-level musicianship and deeply interactive dynamic to break down the barriers separating bop, hip-hop, R&B and electronic music.

WITH UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO’S JAZZ LAB I AND NEVADA WIND

ENSEMBLE

In collaboration with award-winning composer and arranger, Omar Thomas, two University of Nevada, Reno student ensembles open for Marquis Hill: Jazz Lab I and Nevada Wind Ensemble. This special collaboration is the culminating performance following Thomas’ weeklong residency at the University. The University’s premier jazz ensemble will perform his multi-layered masterpiece, “We Will Know: An LGBT Civil Rights Piece in Four Movements” and the Nevada Wind Ensemble will perform “Mother of a Revolution” and “Of Our New Day Begun.” Jazz Lab I is directed by Josh D. Reed; Nevada Wind Ensemble is directed by Reed Chamberlin.

“ Hill commands a nimble technique, a fluid way of improvising and a pervasively lyrical manner. … he doesn’t oversell his statements, instead moderating volume and emphasizing beauty of sound. ”

Setting New Standards with Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice

Join this energizing panel discussion about gender, jazz and the barriers to equity that exist today. The panel explores how to navigate and change the rules of the game for a more equitable future of jazz.

Partnering for Equity in Jazz

The esteemed Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice is working to change the way jazz is perceived and presented. Its ultimate goal is a future of jazz that, unlike the past, illuminates, embraces and fosters all of its creative contributors, regardless of gender and race.

The Reno Jazz Festival is continuing its partnership with the Institute to make their shared vision a reality and ensure that conversations about jazz and equity are taking place at each Festival. In addition, the Festival is dedicated to hiring artists and educators from underrepresented communities in jazz (this year 80% of all artists/educators fit this category) and annually commissions new music from underrepresented communities in jazz.

2023 FESTIVAL COMPOSER

As Festival composer Julian Tanaka created an original composition, Path of the Jedi. Participating schools have the option to perform it during the Festival.

Julian Tanaka is an uber-talented and nuanced jazz saxophonist and clarinetist whose work is inventive and evocative and whose improvisational skills are stellar. Equally comfortable playing jazz, reggae, hip-hop, R&B and rock music, he’s shared the stage with the Count Basie Orchestra and Postmodern Jukebox and played in several production shows on the Las Vegas Strip. Some of his standout musical endeavors are touring internationally with the hit Broadway

musical “Come Fly Away,” backing Grammy award-winning Boyz II Men during their Las Vegas residency and playing in another hit musical, “Baz.” The woodwind specialist has also earned a strong reputation with his own ensemble, the Julian Tanaka Quartet, for which he writes and arranges music. His composing experience is vast, having written traditional big band charts, conducted large ensemble-free improvisations and arranged for pops orchestras.

FESTIVAL HEADLINER GEORGE

The Reno Jazz Festival is thrilled to announce GEORGE as the 2024 headliner. The group features four individual “earthworkers,” as the derivation of the moniker implies, who excavate and create intense and intriguing music, the sound of which defies categories and labels.

The visionary behind the quartet, John Hollenbeck, is an award-winning, genrecrossing composer-percussionist, renowned in the jazz and new music worlds. Anna Webber, the 2021 Berlin Prize Fellow, is a flutist, saxophonist and composer whose interests and work lie between avant garde Wjazz and new classical music. Aurora Nealand is most recognized for her performance on saxophones, clarinet and vocals and has been at the forefront of the revival of traditional jazz in New Orleans with her band, The Royal Roses. Canada-based Chiquita Magic specializes in futuristic electro pop, achieved with microtonal synths, drum machines and her voice.

These stellar musical artists joined forces during COVID, and “the result is a wholeness or cohesion which is undeniable, despite the variety of backgrounds,” wrote Platinummind.net. GEORGE first recorded a proof of concept of the same name in 2021 and followed with "Letters to George," released in January 2023.
