6-WIRE > Captivating Strings-Piano Trio
Historical cultural influences provide powerful undertones and inspiration for each artist this season, from the styles and instruments to the rhythms and sounds. But the elements have been reimagined, reworked, enhanced, even melded, often through collaboration, by these innovative and talented artists. The result, and what captivates and entertains, is music that’s fresh, bold and rich.
Join us this 63rd season and experience these artistic juxtapositions in full effect.

Be mesmerized by their exceptional artistry.
This quartet creates a unique version of traditional roots music brimming with Latin American flavor. It’s lively, fun, and infectious. Though all original, their compositions are infused with sounds from each band member’s respective countries of origin — Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the U.S. — and heavy on rhythms and percussion. Lyrics are in Spanish, Portuguese or English.

Drawing inspiration from every sound under the sun, these uber talented and musically curious cats create familiar yet fresh tunes that cross genres. At the core are jazz and hip-hop, to which they skillfully add elements of funk, soul and rock for a music that is all their own. One minute they’ll perform a smooth groove and in the next, a hard-hitting rap song.
In a special local twist to their concert, the University of Nevada, Reno’s premier student jazz ensemble, Jazz Lab I, will perform two pieces with Butcher Brown.

From Chinese folk to American bluegrass, there isn’t a music style this trio can’t play. West and East meet with the stunning combination of the sweet and soaring violin and the huskier and sexier erhu, played by consummate artists. Broad sounds of the grounding piano juxtapose the strings. The result is immensely expressive music that evokes an array of emotions.

This three-time Grammy winning recording artist is a Hawaiian treasure. When you experience him sing, you’ll understand why. It’s not just his voice, notably beautiful and soothing, but also his delivery, which is heartfelt and joyous. Hawaiian music is Pe’a’s specialty, both traditional and original.
For even more island vibes during his show, the local hula group, Ka Pā Hula O Kawaiolanoelaniokā ne, will interpret some of his songs through dance.
