Welcome REIMAGINED FOR OUR TIMES Welcome! We’re thrilled to have you all join us for the 60th Annual Reno Jazz Festival.

This year’s landmark event is a celebration of jazz music like no other. We’ve made a few exciting changes from past programs and are offering some new compelling events.

This year, the Festival is beginning an annual tradition of commissioning music from a composer who is under-represented in jazz. Our 2022 Festival composer and pianist Annie Booth wrote a beautiful piece that we shared with all participating schools.

Also in an inaugural event, faculty from the Berklee College of Music’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice (BIJGJ) will host a workshop at this year’s Festival — “Forging a New Legacy in Jazz.” This marks the beginning of a new partnership with the BIJGJ and an integral component of each Festival moving forward.

Together, we will work towards building a more equitable future of jazz.

The Festival is packed with 16 workshops on various jazz-related topics, led by the country’s foremost jazz artists and educators.

Two exciting headliner concerts feature groundbreaking saxophonist, Miguel Zenón, performing with his quartet, as well as rising star jazz vocalist, composer, and improviser,

Schedule Overview MICHAEL MAYO + THE COLLECTIVE THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 7:30PM Michael Mayo, jazz composer and vocal phenom, will kick off the Festival in performance with The Collective, the University of Nevada, Reno faculty ensemble.

The Collective’s renowned musicians include Adam Benjamin, piano; Peter Epstein, saxophone; Hans Halt, bass; Andrew Heglund, drums; and Josh Reed, trumpet.

Together, they'll deliver an amazing show.

And, the annual jam session — with artists Annie Booth, piano; Richard Giddens, bass; Otto Lee, saxophone; and Tina Raymond, drums — is sure to bring down the house well into the early hours.

With 2022 marking our first non-competitive Festival, we’re extending the time dedicated for school performance feedback, learning and coaching, providing a more immersive learning experience for students.

Lastly, we’re livestreaming all Festival events for easy and convenient access, ensuring we are as accessible as possible during this transition back to in-person programming.

There’s no doubt, it’s truly the participating students who make the Festival a vibrant epicenter of jazz each April. We look forward to continuing to serve the upcoming generations of jazz musicians for another 60 years and beyond.

Groundbreaking saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenón will headline the Festival with longtime bandmates, drummer Henry Cole, bassist Hans Glawischnig and pianist Luis Perdomo. As Miguel is known for mixing jazz and Latin American folkloric music, this quartet is sure to mesmerize with unique sounds and compositions.

WORKSHOPS FRIDAY, APRIL 29 - SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 9AM - 6PM The lineup of 16 exceptional, interactive workshops will cover a broad array of jazz-focused topics. Each of these diverse educational opportunities is hosted by a different accomplished jazz artist or educator, including Michael Mayo, Miguel Zenón, Annie Booth and Berklee College of Music’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.

JAM SESSION WITH THE PROS FRIDAY, APRIL29, 10PM The House Band will rock the top floor of the Laughing Planet, with an inspirational and improvisational show, sure to extend well past bedtimes. ichael Mayo boasts perfect pitch and impressive improvisational chops. His fresh recordings reveal his wide stylistic range, from his smoother than melting butterscotch a cappella presentation of If You Could See Me Now to his commanding, on point urgency in What’s My Name.

The Los Angeles native turned New Yorker grew up in a musical home and spent time in the studio as a child.

His mother, a singer, and his father, a saxophonist/ multi-instrumentalist, toured, singing with “people like Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind &

Fire, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson … all the greats,” Michael recalls.

Michael listened well and formed his musical identity long before hitting the stage with his own interpretations of contemporary music, rhythm and blues and jazz standards.

Michael earned a bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Afterwards, he was one of three vocalists to be accepted into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (now the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz). There, he was coached by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Herb Alpert, Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Heath while he earned a master of fine arts degree.

His career highlights include performing at the White House, The Kennedy Center and the Panama Jazz Festival. Michael has recorded or performed internationally with Herbie Hancock, Kneebody, Michael Jackson, Usher, Matchbox 20, Josh Groban and many others.

Just before COVID hit, Michael finished Bones, his debut, full-length solo album.

Like the foundation of a house, Bones provided a firm base for Michael’s flights to higher ground. Each of the album’s songs represents a learning experience for the performer, the building blocks, or titular “bones,” that made Michael the person and performer he is today.

+ THE COLLECTIVE During Thursday’s performance, Michael Mayo will team up with The Collective — Adam Benjamin, Peter Epstein, Hans Halt, Andrew Heglund and Josh Reed — all core faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Program in Jazz & Improvisational Music. The Collective is recognized as one of the most imaginative and distinctive jazz ensembles in the northwestern U.S. All of the members are dedicated to sharing their knowledge of improvisation, composition and history while contributing to the evolution of jazz. Together, they have released four albums and are actively performing, recording and teaching throughout the world.

iguel Zenón is a jazz composer and alto saxophonist who is considered to be one of the most groundbreaking and influential artists of his time.

He’s masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition, producing an incredibly unique voice informed by his many musical influences.

Miguel has built a distinguished career as a leader, releasing 14 albums under his own name. He’s crafted his artistic identity by working with older jazz masters and younger innovators, irrespective of styles and genres. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native has toured or recorded with multiple artists, including Charlie Haden, Dan Tepfer, Miles Okazaki and the Jeff Ballard Trio. Numerous organizations, such as SFJAZZ and Chamber Music America, and peers have commissioned him to compose original works.

Africa as part of their Jazz Ambassador program. In 2011, Miguel founded Caravana Cultural, dedicated to putting on free jazz concerts in Puerto Rico’s rural areas.

Miguel is a Guggenheim and MacArthur “Genius” fellow. His many honors include the Jazz Journalist Association’s choice for Alto Saxophonist of the Year in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020 and multiple Grammy nominations, most recently in 2022, with Luis Perdomo for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Luis Perdomo is a jazz pianist, composer and bandleader who has released nine of his own albums and has contributed as a sideman to 120-plus recordings.

Henry Cole is a shape-shifting master drummer whose versatile, multicultural style positions him at the forefront of a growing wave of jazz innovation and modern cross-cultural rhythms.

Hans Glawischnig is an acoustic double and electric bass player and a Berklee School of Music alumnus with four albums and many collaborations to his name.

Jazz Lab 1, the opening act for the Miguel Zenón Quartet, is the premier student jazz ensemble, under the direction of Josh Reed, at the University of Nevada, Reno. During their opening performance, the skilled jazz studies students will perform works by jazz artists and composers Maria Schneider, Bill Holman and Pedro Giraudo.

nnie Booth is a versatile and award-winning jazz pianist and composer who is actively writing and playing music locally and nationally. Based in Denver, Colorado, she’s the lead performer of her many projects — including the Annie Booth Trio, Sextet and Big Band — and also a busy side musician.

Annie is fiercely passionate about empowering the next generation of young women to express themselves through the jazz art form.

She's taught jazz piano and jazz arranging at the University of Northern Colorado.

Since age 16, Annie studied with jazz organist Pat Bianchi, pianist Jeff Jenkins and Art Lande, and attended the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts. The performer then went to the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she earned a bachelor of music in jazz studies and a master of jazz performance and pedagogy, through the Thompson Jazz Studies Program.

The Reno Jazz Festival selected Annie as its first VIP Composer, to help further the composition of music by women and other under-represented groups in jazz. In that role, Annie provided an original jazz piece, Sagebrush, for participating schools to have the option of performing in their video submission.

Annie has received national recognition for her compositions.

They’ve included a 2021 Performance Plus Grant from Chamber Music America, ASCAP’s Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers’ Award and recognition as the 2020 Outstanding Graduate Performance by Downbeat magazine. Denver’s Westword publication named her one of the Ten Best Jazz Musicians.

he House Band’s four brilliant jazz musicians will play it by ear in this not-to-miss, free event.

The Festival headliners — Michael Mayo and Miguel Zenón — have been invited to attend, too, and may just join the improvisational fun. What is sure to be an all-original jam session will take place at Reno’s Laughing Planet restaurant and bar and last well into the early hours of the morning.

Creating a Sound Concept How to improve your sound on the trumpet, coming up with your own idea of what you want your sound to be, and ways to achieve that sound. Exploring Genres to Create Your Own Sound In Jazz Based in Miami, Israeli pianist Tal Cohen discusses how world music influences diverge from jazz norms to create new styles of improvisation and compositional forms. Having studied a variety of musical styles, from classical music to traditional Jewish folk songs, Cohen will discuss his process so you can create your own original sound. Having a unique approach informed from different world cultures and musical styles will set you apart as a musician, bringing offerings to the table of what defines jazz — something creative, new and unique.

Organizing the Shed Organizing the Shed is a guide to help developing jazz musicians organize their daily practice sessions. Miguel Zenón Clinic Miguel has given hundreds of lectures and masterclasses and taught all over the world, including North America, Africa, France and Switzerland. Bringing jazz to Puerto Rico is a special focus for him. Since 2005, he’s organized Jazz Jam Sessions in the San Juan area so the local younger jazz musicians may interact and grow. He also regularly provides free jazz concerts in rural Puerto Rico through Caravana Cultural, a program he founded in 2011.
