PERFORMING ARTS PERFORMING ARTS SERIES SERIES 2022 – 2023 SEASON 2022 – 2023 SEASON

LIVELY IMPASSIONED DISTINCTIVE REFRESHING IMPACTFUL

Magnificently Diverse. Guided by Tradition. The lineup for this season’s Performing Arts Series is, simply put, magnificently diverse. It features a melting pot of supremely talented artists who are shattering barriers and forging their own path. The differences among them, in terms of ancestry, backgrounds, careers, home countries, culture and more, are many and notable, as all of these inform their individual work. The season’s offerings are refreshingly unexpected. There’ll be a multimedia spectacular, highlighting zapateado and tap dancing; a comedic chamber music extravaganza; a soulful beatboxing virtuosa; an elevated vocal showcase; and a koto-violinpercussion instrumental affair. M5 and Yumi Kurosawa are courageously expanding the boundaries of their respective music genres. Butterscotch proudly uses her unique music style to help shatter stereotypes about gender and sexuality. Vanessa Sanchez and La Mezcla deftly employ the performing arts to highlight social injustice. Säje is cleverly capitalizing on the collective power of women to succeed in a male-dominated field. Though dissimilar in many ways, all of the performers who will take the stage here in Reno this season share at least one commonality. That is, they’re grounded in tradition — historical, cultural and educational — just like this series, now in its 62nd season.

Pachuquísmo

BY VANESSA SANCHEZ AND LA MEZCLA

History, Culture + Rhythm In this compelling and award-winning production, creatorchoreographer-director Vanessa Sanchez and the all-female cast of La Mezcla employ dance, music, spoken word, video and percussive dialogue to recount a pivotal part of Chicanx history: the Pachuca Era, punctuated by the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles.

THURS

SEPT 15 Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater, Bartley Ranch Regional Park

7:30 PM

In a twist, the show focuses on the female, rather than male, experience of pachuquísmo. This 1940’s Mexican American counterculture in the United States, associated with zoot suit fashion, jazz and swing music, emerged during a time when this marginalized community was fighting for rights and equality in the States.

In portraying the not-often-told history of the Pachucas, Pachuquísmo highlights and juxtaposes the duality of their culture through live music and dance. Zapateado and Veracruz state folk music symbolize the Mexican heritage of these protesting women while jazz music and tap dance represent their American experience. The result is impactful.

DON’T MISS: A pre-performance celebration begins at 6 PM with lowriders on display, music and food & beverages from La Favorita, Pelon Micheladas and Rin Tin Taps. La Mezcla will take the stage at 7:30 PM, under the stars.

Yumi Kurosawa Trio With world-renowned koto player and composer Yumi Kurosawa at its heart, this ensemble creates different colors of sound by melding seemingly disparate ancient and Modern Era instruments. Joining Kurosawa for this trio are violinist Naho Parrini and tabla player and percussionist Eric Phinney.

THURS

OCT 6 Nightingale Concert Hall, University of Nevada, Reno

7:30 PM

The three will play a selection of Kurosawa’s exhilarating new pieces and reinterpret some favorites among her existing works. They’ll turn her solo compositions into dynamic, multifaceted performances that encompass a broad range of expression and dimension.

Kurosawa is one of the most exciting maestros of Japan’s national and most popular instrument, the koto, which dates back to the 8th century. Based in New York, she effortlessly brings this more than a thousand-year-old musical legacy into present day. Further, Kurosawa is expanding the boundaries of the traditional Japanese music genre by incorporating outside musical and cultural influences in her compositions and performances.

Marvelous Music + Heaps of Humor

säje Song, Soul + Sisterhood This Grammy-nominated, all-women supergroup is known for its smooth, jazzy vocals, imbued with gentleness and heartfelt expression.

THURS

FEB 9 Nightingale Concert Hall, University of Nevada, Reno

7:30 PM

When the four singer-composers, each with a thriving career of their own, met up in Palm Springs in 2020, they intended to get to know each other and perhaps form an ensemble. The outcome was more than anyone expected. They discovered their voices blend and harmonize together beautifully, creating a unique, gorgeous tone, ranging from loud and brassy to soft and tender.

During those four days, the quartet began to form their collective identity as a vocal powerhouse. Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendric and Erin Bentlage wrote “Desert Song,” which celebrates “the freedom in embracing the limitless potential of unburdened female collaborators.” This, säje’s first single, earned a Grammy nomination.

Now, as a collaborative and sharing a sisterhood, säje explores and performs music that moves them. This includes inspiring original material, beloved jazz standards and intriguing reimaginations of contemporary songs covering a range of genres.

Butterscotch Vocal Fusions + Empowering Messages This expert vocal percussionist creates one-of-a-kind tunes, lyrics and music, by using any number of tools in her arsenal — singing, beatboxing, rapping, looping, piano and guitar playing — often at the same time. And, she’s really good at all of them.

THURS

MAR 9 Nightingale Concert Hall, University of Nevada, Reno

7:30 PM

This native Sacramentan has made a name for herself in the male-dominated field of beatboxing, her stellar ability earning her the title of the first female international beatboxing champion. Her singing has been described as “drizzling her vocals like melted caramel over every note.” Her voice has been likened to Billie Holiday’s, and her rap verses comparable to Lauryn Hill’s.

The compositions Butterscotch creates span various genres, including hip-hop, rhythm and blues, jazz and classical, as she’s influenced by many diverse artists, from Chopin to Chaka Khan and John Coltrane to Stevie Wonder.

Through her music, this quadruple threat defies social constructs of music and gender. She’s not afraid to get deeply personal in her lyrics, even discussing her struggles with depression and with being a biracial queer woman of color.
