El consumidor sostenible, ¿entiende la distribución el mensaje?

U

n estudio publicado por la Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) y New Economy and Social Innovation confirma que el 73% de los consumidores toma decisiones de compra por motivos éticos y de sostenibilidad

producciones que ya tiene en el país, como de producciones de contra temporada o tropicales y exóticas.

Los expertos ya vaticinan que si hay un sector que se verá fuertemente afectado, debido a su gran incidencia en el día a día, será el de la alimentación. Algunos supermercados europeos ya se han apuntado al “mientras haya de aquí, no queremos producto de fuera y, en todo caso, europeo, que contamina menos”. Lo que impera ahora es: local, nacional, europeo, y con poco o nulo embalaje. En esta escala.

La celebración en Madrid de la Cumbre Mundial del Clima, CPO25, ha provocado en nuestro país un fuerte debate, ríos de tinta, horas televisivas y radiofónicas sobre cómo afrontar, desde cualquier ángulo, la emergencia climática en la que vive el planeta.

España, uno de los productores más fuertes en frutas y hortalizas, lleva años incrementando sus importaciones tanto de las mismas

Es hora de que las empresas comiencen a valorar, y algunas ya lo hacen, si lo importante es ganar dinero o ir minando el planeta.

La huella de carbono que genera el tráfico mundial de frutas y hortalizas es abrumadora en cifras. De ello somos todos conscientes. Se habla del transporte terrestre, pero aún más contaminante son el marítimo y el aéreo.

Y, sin embargo, durante más de una década, en nuestro mercado se han afianzado marcas extranjeras, en detrimento del consumo de producto nacional.

El debate está abierto y el mundo financiero ya ha empezado a valorar a las empresas por su rating de sostenibilidad. Ya no será posible hacer un buen negocio contaminando.

“El precio de un protocolo supone unos 0,14 euros por kilo”

E

l que durante más de tres décadas fuera director comercial de Anecoop, y hoy en día consultor, habló con Fruit Today con la perspectiva que le confiere estar fuera de una organización y no estar subyugado por los problemas del día a día ¿Cree usted que la citricultura valenciana tiene futuro?

Sí, pero bajo magnitudes diferentes. El factor tecnología nos indica que los almacenes deben mover entre 50.000 y 100.000 toneladas con un calendario de 7-8 meses y, aquellos que puedan,

sumidores a los que llegamos sin aranceles, un calendario equilibrado de variedades, una menor huella de carbono que otros orígenes, seguridad alimentaria y sostenibilidad ambiental garantizada y, sobre todo, calidad junto a un ‘know how’ acumulado durante un siglo; pero lo que es más importante, un tiempo récord desde el árbol a la mesa que otro origen no puede superar. ¿Cómo podemos hacer frente al grave problema del abandono de campos que rodean los pueblos, donde hace décadas se creaba riqueza?

En nuestros pueblos, si no se hace un planteamiento correcto, sufriremos un grave deterioro ambiental al que se suman los estragos que el cambio climático hace en determinadas comarcas productoras. Estamos viviendo una verdadera crisis medioambiental y no le damos importancia. Nos vemos abocados a vivir rodeados de campos abandonados, que bien podrían reconvertirse en polígonos agrícolas, pero son las diferentes administraciones las que deben tomar cartas en el asunto. ¿Puede ser un gran revulsivo la entrada en nuevos mercados?

Por supuesto. Vivimos en un mundo global y aunque Europa haya sido, y es, nuestro principal mercado, la logística actual nos permite llegar lejos. Por ejemplo, no vendemos ni en Japón ni en Méjico y en Estados Unidos se nos han comido, y no por el 25% de Trump, que también, sino que sucedió mucho antes. Ahora las casi 100.000 tn de cítricos los vende Marruecos, país que se ha quedado con el saber hacer de las empresas españolas que ya no están allí.

Si los europeos nos preocupamos porque nuestra agricultura sea competitiva, ¿cómo es posible que no hayamos puesto freno a los protocolos que firma país por país y que encarece el producto unos 12 o 14 céntimos el kilo?

Los pomelos chinos vienen aquí sin protocolo y nosotros señalamos la parcela previamente, pagamos los inspectores, el hotel, el traductor y un largo etc. y encima de esto, cumplimos con un protocolo que nos obliga a realizar un cool treatment, encareciendo el producto.

Un país que quiere vender en Europa, negocia en Bruselas su entrada, pero para la exportación, los 27 o 28 debemos negociar de manera individual. Esto es una verdadera aberración. Hay que negociar en la misma mesa y en el mismo momento. Es decir, si tú quieres vender en Europa, nosotros queremos vender en tu país. Si tus uvas vienen sin cool treatment, yo quiero que las mías también. Si yo tengo plagas, estoy seguro que tú también. ¿Por qué no se produce esto si los europeos saldríamos ganando?

No. Es un problema común a otros países como Polonia, Alemania, Italia o Francia con sus producciones de manzanas y Bélgica y Holanda con las de peras. ¿Es Sudáfrica uno de los grandes enemigos del campo valenciano?

Y Egipto y Marruecos…... Todos los países del mundo intentan posicionarse lo mejor posible en todos los destinos al igual que procura hacerlo la producción española.

Otra cuestión es el tema fitosanitario. Esto son palabras mayores y debe abordarse mediante el diálogo.

Es más, creo que Sudáfrica o cualquier país del hemisferio sur es un aliado de muchos exportadores españoles (aquellos que trabajan los 12 meses al año) porque es inviable contar con producto español para vender en Europa o en el mercado interior en el corazón del verano.

Do you think that the Valencian citrus growing sector has a future?

Spanish companies that are no longer operating there.

Yes, but on a different scale. The technology factor tells us that the warehouses must move between 50,000 and 100,000 tonnes with a calendar of 7-8 months and, for those that can, it should be combined with imports in order to be active 12 months of the year. Let me give you an example: from 1993 to the present day 400 warehouses have disappeared in Spain and, of these, 350 were in the Valencian Community, almost all of them small ones.

If Europeans are concerned about our farming being competitive, how is it possible that a halt has not been brought to the protocols that are signed country by country and that are driving up the prices of the produce by around 12 to 14 cents a kilo?

Furthermore, we have the problem of land use, with increasing figures for abandonment of the fields. The elements that previously brought wealth to the little towns and countryside nowadays degrade the villages’ ecosystems and become an environmental problem, which nobody wants to tackle.

Spain has a highly favourable situational income. And this includes several factors: an optimum geographical location with 600 million consumers who we reach without any customs duties, a balanced variety calendar, a smaller carbon footprint than other sources, food safety and guaranteed environmental sustainability and, above all, quality alongside a century’s worth of know-how; but the most important point is a record time from the tree to the table that no other sources can beat.

How can we tackle the serious problem of the abandonment of fields around the villages, where decades ago wealth was created?

If the correct approach is not taken in our villages, we will suffer from serious environmental deterioration, to which is added the ravages that climate change is making in certain productive regions. We are experiencing a real environmental crisis and we are not giving it enough importance. We are compelled to live surrounded by abandoned fields, which could be converted into agricultural estates, but the different governments must take action.

Could entering new markets be an important spur?

Of course. We are living in a global world and although Europe has always been and still is our main market, today’s logistics allow us to reach more distant regions. For example, we don’t sell in Japan or in Mexico, and in the United States our market share has been taken over, and not due to Trump’s 25% tariff, this happened long before his time. Now the almost 100,000 tn of citrus fruits are sold to them by Morocco, a country that has retained the know-how of the

Chinese grapefruit come here without any protocol at all, and we have to indicate the land beforehand, pay the inspectors, the hotels, the translators and a long list of other expenses, and added to all this, we meet a protocol that obliges us to carry out a cool treatment, making the produce even more expensive.

A country that wants to sell in Europe negotiates its entry in Brussels, but for exports, the 27 or 28 member states must negotiate individually. This is a real aberration. Negotiations must take place at the same table and at the same time. That is to say, you want to sell in Europe, we want to sell in your country.

If your grapes come here without cool treatment, I want mine to go to your country in the same way. If I have pests, I am sure that you have them, too.

Why doesn’t this happen if Europeans would stand to gain from it?

It is a very profound issue, which is deeply permeated in the institutions themselves and it is not questioned. It is a modus operandi that is used in spite of the fact that it makes us less competitive. There are MEPs that do not know what you are talking to them about.

Is there a rupture in the EU between the north and the south with this problem?

No. It is a problem that is common to countries such as Poland, Germany, Italy or France with their apple productions, and Belgium and Holland with their pears.

Is South Africa one of the great enemies of the fields of Valencia?

Along with Egypt and Morocco… Countries around the world are trying to position themselves as best as possible in the destinations, in the same way as the Spanish production is trying to do. Another question is the subject of plant protection. These are strong words and they must be tackled using dialogue.

MAAVi, la ‘casa’ de la agricultura del futuro Kimitec abre las puertas de MAAVi Innovation Center, el mayor centro de biopesticidas, prebióticos y probióticos de Europa y uno de los mayores del mundo

imitec Group nació en 2007 y ha logrado ponerse en el foco de la industria al conseguir soluciones 100% naturales con la misma efectividad que los químicos, pero a un coste más competitivo, y al convertirse en la única empresa europea con cuatro proyectos Horizon 2020. De ahí que, como confesó Félix García, CEO de Kimitec Group, hayan querido comprarle la empresa 28 veces el año pasado y 19 en este 2019. Pero “nunca se venderá”. Porque no es solo un negocio, es fruto de una filosofía de vida que ya se ha expandido a 90 países de todo el mundo a través de 4 delegaciones con 5 oficinas: EE.UU. (Sacramento y Minneapolis), Brasil (Sao Paulo), Latinoamérica (Lima) y China (Shanghái).

Además, ofrece sus servicios a empresas para desarrollar soluciones específicas, ya sean del agro (por ej., colaboran en el proyecto AgroHealth junto con La Unión y Fundación Cajamar), como otras para revalorizar subproductos (es el caso de Cosentino y los restos derivados de cortar la piedra, o de Heineken con la levadura resultante de elaborar la cerveza).

“Hemos venido para quedarnos y llevar la agricultura al sitio de donde nunca se debía haber ido”. Una frase de Félix García que resume la razón de ser de MAAVi y Kimitec.

Kimitec Group was born in 2007 and it has managed to put itself in the industry’s spotlight by obtaining solutions that are 100% natural, with the same efficiency as chemicals, but at a more competitive cost and by becoming the only European company with four Horizon 2020 projects.

This is the reason, as Félix García, CEO of Kimitec Group admitted, that last year they received 28 purchase offers for the company and 19 in 2019. But “it will never be sold”.

García assures that “chemicals are not needed for productive farming.” The key lies in nature and in finding the correct molecule and not only the right extract.

Kimitec proposes natural solutions, based on botany, microbiology, micro-algae and green chemistry (they define it as technology 4 Health), but which are as efficient as chemical products. To do this, they are working on 7 lines of R&D: Nutrition, bio-pesticides, pro and prebiotics, priming, symbionts and seed treatments.

Explosion of ‘biopests’ Looking at the figures that make up the global market of bio pesticides in 2018, with sales for a total of 3,500 million dollars worldwide, and a growth forecast of 14-16% over the next few years, we can deduce that MAAVi’s proposal has a very bright future.

Currently Kimitec is already a “partner in most multinationals”, which are looking for ‘green’ solutions that complement their offer.

Additionally, it offers its services to companies to develop specific solutions, either agro (e.g. they are working on the AgroHealth project alongside La Unión y Fundación Cajamar), or others to revalue sub products (this is the case of Cosentino and the remains derived from cutting stone, or from Heineken with the yeast resulting from beer preparation).

do a nivel general en la hortofruticultura, les preocupa la rentabilidad. Debemos ser capaces de mantener la rentabilidad del campo, de lo contrario, esto no tendrá futuro.

Nos preocupa también la aventura constante de la U.E. por hacer conciertos con terceros países que nos está dejando sin maniobra en nuestro principal mercado: Europa. Ahora se irá el Reino Unido y, si nada cambia, pasará a ser un país tercero. ¿Qué nos queda a los europeos como mercado interno de la propia U.E.?

Han pasado una burbuja del arándano de la que todavía no se han recuperado, pero ahora empiezan los problemas con la frambuesa por las producciones marroquíes. ¿Qué opina al respecto?

Sí, así es. En estos momentos estamos preocupados porque la frambuesa marroquí está inundando los mercados. Tanto Rafael Domínguez

El puerto de Huelva significa una gran opción de futuro para el sector

¿

Puede afirmarse que la fresa vive una etapa de estabilidad o mejor dicho de madurez?

Podemos hablar de estabilidad si nos referimos al número de hectáreas de las plantaciones. En este sentido, la afirmación es correcta. Nos movemos desde hace unos años, hablando de fresa en concreto, en unas 6.000 hectáreas, que valoramos como correctas para el sector. Diferente es el incremento de frambuesa, sobre un 10% y el de arándano, un 3%.

Otra cuestión son los volúmenes de producción, que en una campaña larga como la nuestra es

imposible adelantar a día de hoy. ¿Qué le preocupa al productor de fresa?

A nuestros productores, y esto está pasan-

La frambuesa marroquí ha cuadriplicado su entrada en España nuestra campaña de inicio se ve arrastrada por los precios que Marruecos impone, será muy negativo para el sector.

En Huelva hemos conseguido, con las distintas variedades, tener frambuesa todo el año y esto representa una gran ventaja para el agricultor. Hay obtentores que tienen un calendario completo para los 12 meses.

Respecto a lo sucedido con el arándano, está claro que una de las cosas que ocurrió es que la oferta creció desorbitadamente frente a una demanda todavía escasa. En este momento, el crecimiento está ralentizado. Hay un mayor volumen porque entran en producción las plantaciones de hace años, pero ya nadie habla de nuevos cultivos. La evolución de esta categoría pasa por la obtención de variedades tempranas y ultra tempranas.

En Huelva ya no se están plantando solo berries. El sector busca la diversificación con otros cultivos como aguacate, mango, kaki, etc. Y esto se produce en la zona de Lepe y Cartaya porque hay menos problemas de agua. ¿Existe una gran efervescencia en el sec-

tor por tener las variedades más apropiadas? ¿Qué papel juega FNM? Hay un gran movimiento porque los productores conocen la necesidad de pertenecer a un “club” o ser licenciatarios de las variedades más adecuadas a cada mercado. We can talk about stability if we refer to the number of hectares in the plantations. In this sense, the statement is correct. Speaking specifically about strawberries, in recent years we have been moving around 6,000 hectares, which we see as correct for the sector. The same cannot be said for the increase in raspberries, with an excess of 10% and bilberries, with a 3% surplus.

Another question altogether involves the production volumes, which in a long campaign like ours means it is impossible to give any advance figures today.

What are strawberry producers concerned about?

Our producers are concerned about profitability, and this is a general concern in the fruit and vegetable growing sector. We must be able to maintain the profitability of the fields; otherwise, they will have no future.

We are also concerned about the EU’s constant quest to come to agreements with third countries that are leaving us without any room for manoeuvre on our main market: Europe.

The United Kingdom is about to leave, and if there are no changes, it will become a third country. What EU internal market is left for the Europeans?

There has been a bilberry bubble that burst and the market has not recovered from it yet, but now problems are starting with raspberries due to the Moroccan productions. What is your opinion on this?

Yes, this is true. At present we are concerned because the markets are being flooded with Moroccan raspberries. Raspberries and bilberries are arriving without any type of customs duties. Moroccan raspberry entries have quadrupled and we have asked the Ministry to carry out a study on what is happening. If the start of our campaign is dragged down by the prices imposed by the Moroccans, it will be very negative for the sector.

In Huelva, we have managed to obtain raspberries all year round, using different varieties, and this is an important advantage for farmers. There are plant breeders that have a complete calendar for the 12 months of the year.

Ustedes están al lado de un puerto marítimo, ¿cómo es posible que esta ventaja competitiva no se aproveche?

Lo ideal sería que el puerto de Huelva tuviera una terminal marítima con posibilidades de enviar mercancía de aquí a Hong Kong o Singapur, tal y como hacen los chilenos. En estos momentos estamos en negociaciones con la Autoridad Portuaria, pero de momento, no hay una ninguna naviera interesada. Incluso hemos tenido encuentros con una empresa japonesa para conocer los avances en tecnología del frío. El puerto significa una gran opción de futuro. ¿Se ha cambiado la ubicación del Congreso de Frutos Rojos?

No, finalmente se volverá a celebrar en la Casa Colón, pero contaremos con mayor espacio habilitado para el mismo.

Regarding what has occurred with bilberries, it is obvious that one of the things that happened is that the offer grew tremendously, compared to a demand that is still limited. At the moment, the growth is slowing down. There is a larger volume because the plantations from a few years’ ago are coming into production, but now nobody is talking about new crops.

The evolution of this category involves obtaining early and ultra-early varieties.

In Huelva, farmers are no longer planting just berries. The sector is looking for diversification with other crops such as avocados, mangos, persimmons, etc. And this is happening in the regions of Lepe and Cartaya because there are less water problems there.

Is the sector very hyped up about having more appropriate varieties? What role does the FNM play?

There is significant movement because the producers are aware of the need to belong to a “club” or to be a licence-holder of the most suitable varieties for each market. At present, the clubs are not giving out licences for the more profitable varieties and there are companies that have opted for working alongside other national or foreign entities to gain access or get exploitation rights for a variety.

The creation of FNM was a real success because it is a company from Huelva, with participation by the sector and it has offered highly profitable varieties; in fact, we have a market share of 37%, with the Rociera at the head.

Are you exploring new markets?

Yes, of course we are. We know the competition that is being generated in this globalised world and the filtering of products from third countries that are being imposed on the European market. The sector is very dynamic and we are not letting the grass grow under our feet.

The EU has just signed an agreement with Singapore and we continue to look for new markets, including China.

You are located next to a shipping port, how come advantage is not being taken of this asset?

Ideally, the port of Huelva should have a shipping terminal that could send goods from here to Hong Kong or Singapore, as occurs in Chile. At present, we are negotiating with the Port Authority, but at the moment there are no shipping companies interested. We have even had meetings with a Japanese company to discover the latest progress being made in cold technology. The port is a great option for the future.

Has the location of the Red Fruits Congress been changed?

No, it will finally be held at the Casa Colón again, but we will have more space available for it.

Las ventas de frambuesa crecieron un 9,5%

as exportaciones de fresas subieron un 8% y llegaron a unas ventas de 233.711 toneladas, frente a las 216.357 vendidas en la campaña anterior. La facturación también creció un 3%, superando los 475 millones.

Las ventas de frambuesas tuvieron un aumento de un 35,2% y llegaron a las 52.000 toneladas exportadas con un valor de 323, 8 millones de euros, que suponen un incremento de más del 9,5 %.

Unido, donde se concentran el 345, el 15% y el 13,2 % de las exportaciones totales.

Destaca el continuado aumento de Italia, que ya acapara el 10% de las compras de Huelva.

Alemania vuelve a ser el mejor cliente de Huelva también en frambuesas concentrando el 38% de las toneladas exportadas. Reino Unido acaparó un 25%, Francia un 11% y los Países Bajos un 10%.

Alemania es el principal destino de los berries onubenses

Las exportaciones de arándanos también crecieron, llegando a las 59.386 toneladas, lo que significa un aumento del 28%. El valor de estas exportaciones fue de 275 millones de euros, que suponen un 6% más de facturación.

Las moras alcanzaron un volumen de 3.656 toneladas y estuvieron valoradas en 24 millones de euros, lo que supuso respectivamente un aumento del 74% y del 35%.

En arándanos, Alemania también se confirma como el máximo consumidor de esta fruta, acaparando casi el 40% de las exportaciones, acaparando el 40% de las exportaciones. En segundo lugar, destacan los Países Bajos con un interés creciente por este producto y con unas compras del 18% del total. Reino Unido ocupa la tercera posición con un 17,7% de arándano comercializado.

En mora, los Países Bajos son los principales compradores de esta categoría, con una cifra muy rotunda del 42,5 %. Le siguen Alemania con un 23,5% y Reino Unido que está en tercer lugar y un porcentaje de compras del 11,6%.

Once again, Germany is Huelva’s best raspberry client, concentrating 38% of the exported tonnes. The United Kingdom receives 25%, France 11% and the Netherlands, 10%.

Regarding bilberries, Germany is also confirmed as the top consumer of this fruit, accounting for almost 40% of the exports. In second place, the Netherlands stands out with a rising interest in this product and with purchases of 18% of the total. The United Kingdom holds the third position, with 17.7% of marketed bilberries.

The Netherlands are the main purchasers of blackberries, with a categorical figure of 42.5%. They are followed by Germany with 23.5% and the United Kingdom which is in third place, with a purchase percentage of 11.6%.

La obtención de Adelita fue todo un éxito, ¿cuál ha sido la evolución de la frambuesa desde entonces?

Las hectáreas de Adelita han ido aumentando progresivamente como lo han hecho también las hectáreas globales de frambuesa en el sector, pero creemos que el de Adelita ha sido un crecimiento ordenado. El año pasado llevamos a cabo una regularización concediendo licencias directas a algunos de los productores que ya estaban produciendo Adelita y/o Lupita para otros licenciatarios, es decir, a quiénes no tenían una licencia directa o eran sublicenciatarios. Actualmente seguimos trabajando

prácticamente con el mismo grupo de productores, pero hay mayor número de licencias directas porque nuestro objetivo es que las empresas productoras sean cada vez más competitivas y se beneficien de nuestra I+D. Adelita tiene mucha implantación en Marruecos y este país se está alzando como un fuerte competidor para la frambuesa andaluza. ¿Cuál es su opinión?

Pero nadie conoce el tope máximo para asumir una demanda con precios competitivos. Creo que las hectáreas se van a regular en función de la oferta y la demanda, analizando lo que pasa cada temporada y reaccionando a posteriori según las liquidaciones de la fruta. Incluso dentro de una misma temporada, siguen existiendo buenas ventanas comerciales sobre todo al inicio de la campaña, y por tanto hay oportunidades para variedades precoces, de calidad y que concentren la producción, como lo son las nuevas selecciones que presenta Planasa actualmente. ¿Y en arándanos en qué situación estamos?

Hay una diferencia básica entre frambuesa y arándano: las hectáreas productivas de la primera se pueden moldear de un año a otro, pero las de arándano no porque la plantación puede durar más de una década. Por este motivo, hemos lanzado las nuevas variedades de Planasa, porque creemos plenamente en su éxito.

Nuestro programa de I+D es relativamente joven, pero hoy en día podemos hablar de que aportamos una mejora importante en I+D. Contamos con variedades registradas que lanzamos al mercado con un modelo de exclusividad y licencia, pero no ofrecemos una sola variedad sino seis. Las pri-

En Planasa nos encontramos de lleno en la potenciación y consolidación de nuestro programa de I+D de mora. Ya tenemos una selección avanzada con la cual empezaremos nuestros ensayos de desarrollo próximamente y está por confirmar el modelo de negocio que seguiremos con ella.

What could the upper limit of hectares be for both raspberries and bilberries in Huelva?

The breeding of Adelita was a complete success; how have raspberries evolved since then?

That is the million dollar question! But nobody knows the upper limit to take on a demand with competitive prices. I think that the hectares will become regulated in terms of offer and demand, analysing what happens each season and reacting consequently according to the fruit settlements.

Even in the same season, there are still good commercial windows, particularly at the start of the campaign, and therefore there are opportunities for early varieties, with good quality and that concentrate the production, such as the new selections that Planasa is currently presenting.

There has been a progressive increase in hectares of Adelita, along with the global hectares of raspberries in the sector, but we believe that Adelita has had an ordered growth. Last year we carried out a regularisation process, granting direct licences to some of the farmers who were already producing Adelita and/or Lupita for other licence-holders. That is to say, to farmers who didn’t have a direct licence or who where sublicensees. At present, we are working with virtually the same group of producers, but there are a larger number of direct licences because our aim is for the producing companies to become more and more competitive and for them to benefit from our R&D. Adelita is very popular in Morocco, a country that is rising as a significant rival for Andalusian raspberries. What is your opinion on this point?

Morocco is a country that unavoidably is becoming one of the main development areas for raspberries and other berries, perhaps at a faster rate than in Huelva, but it is worth taking into account that it started off from a low raspberry implantation level a few years ago. There is always going to be competition, but there are HispanoMoroccan collaboration agreements now, and these will continue to exist in the future. Obviously, the lower labour costs is important, but there are also limiting factors in Morocco in which the Andalusian producers are normally more competitive. In any event, Planasa is a global company that develops projects alongside its raspberry partners in over 10 countries, and the majority of these have the capacity to define their own implementation strategy.

And what is the situation for bilberries?

There is a basic difference between raspberries and bilberries: the productive hectares of the former can be shaped from year to year, but bilberry plantations can last for over a decade. For this reason, Planasa has launched the new varieties because we fully believe in their success.

Our R&D programme is relatively young, but today we can talk about how we are contributing an important improvement in R&D. We have registered varieties that we are launching onto the market with an exclusive model using a licence, but we don’t offer a single variety; we offer six.

The first plant deliveries took place in Autumn 2019.

With respect to our licensees, we could say that they are mainly historical clients and partners with Planasa.

What point has the research reached in blackberries?

At Planasa, we are in the middle of the enhancement and consolidation phase of our blackberry R&D programme. We already have an advanced selection with which we will start our development trials in the near future and we have yet to

También desde China se muestra interés por el conocimiento español ya que viveristas asiáticos están interesados en trabajar con variedades de Fresas Nuevos Materiales (FNM).

Fernando Zaforas, director de marketing de FNM, nos hace una radiografía de las variedades mejor adaptadas. “Somos una empresa de Huelva y nacimos con el fin de cubrir las necesidades del productor onubense, esto es muy importante a la hora de conocer sus necesidades y exigencias.

Creo que esto es parte de nuestro éxito, ya que para nosotros la prioridad siempre ha sido desarrollar variedades que se adapten de la mejor manera a la provincia.”

Más del 70% de la fresa onubense se dirige a los mercados europeos y, por esta razón, desde FNM siempre se ha tenido muy en cuenta el self life de la fruta, con la firmeza y la calidad organoléptica como parámetros imprescindibles.

Rociera, Rábida y Primoris. Entre todas constituyen el 37,4% de la producción en Huelva, según el último informe publicado por el IFAPA. Como novedad, FNM ya tiene en registro una variedad de fresa de día neutro para aquellos productores onubenses que se adapten más a ese segmento “extratemprano” o bien a los de otros países en los que el uso este tipo de variedades está más extendido. Y en frambuesa, está muy cerca de ver la luz la variedad R15, que se está ensayando en los campos de algunos accionistas de la compañía. “Para esta campaña hemos repartido algunos miles de plantas entre accionistas para realizar un seguimiento periódico y de momento, el feedback que estamos recibiendo es inmejorable. Estamos muy ilusionados con la próxima llegada de la que será la primera variedad de frambuesa de FNM,” remarca el ejecutivo.

China muestra interés por el conocimiento varietal de FNM

The project’s success allows them to continue growing and starting to forge their good reputation abroad, with trials in the United States, Mexico and other Latin American countries. China is also enthusiastic about Spanish knowhow, as the Asian nursery farmers are interested in working with varieties from Fresas Nuevos Materiales (FNM).

Fernando Zaforas, marketing manager at FNM, has given us a rundown of the best adapted varieties. “We are a company from Huelva, and we were born to cover the needs of the producers from Huelva; and this is very important when discovering their needs and demands. I think this is part of our success, as our priority has always been to develop varieties that are adapted to the province as much as possible.”

Over 70% of strawberries from Huelva are sent to the European markets and, for this reason, the shelf life of the fruit has always been an important consideration at FNM, with firmness and organoleptic quality as essential parameters.

There are three successful varieties: Rociera, Rábida and Primoris. Amongst them, they make up 37.4% of the production in Huelva, according to the latest report published by the IFAPA. Although Primoris is the firmest, Rociera is the mainstay of the success, as it is the most

reliable in terms of production throughout the campaign and for providing quality fruit regarding flavour and brix. Rociera alone reaches a market share of 26%, which means approximately 145 million plants.

“Our ultimate goal is to offer clients and shareholders a varied catalogue. All the varieties, always short-day plants, have their own stamp. For example, Primoris’ best value is its unmistakeable perfect cone-shape, as well as being the one that survives transport best, which allows it to reach its destination with a flawless appearance. Rociera gives very good results, as it offers extraordinary reliability, while Rábida provides a bonus in early harvesting compared to the other two.”

As a new development, FNM already has a neutral-day strawberry variety on its books for those producers from Huelva who adapt more to this “extra-early” segment, or farmers from other countries where the use of this type of varieties is more widespread. And in raspberries, the variety R15 is about to be born. It is already on trial in fields belonging to some of the company’s shareholders. “For this campaign, we have handed out a few thousand plants amongst our shareholders to carry out periodic monitoring and at present, the feedback we are receiving is unbeatable. We are very excited about the next arrival, which will be the first FNM raspberry variety,” the executive comments.

“Me atrevo a decir que la crisis del arándano será permanente”

ntrevistamos a su gerente, Francisco Sánchez, quien remarca la importancia que en Onubafruit tienen los agricultores y cómo resulta imprescindible trabajar para que tengan una renta adecuada. ¿Cómo vislumbra la campaña de fresa para Onubafruit?

Creo que, tal y como ocurre en el resto del sector, la fresa pasa por un periodo de estabilidad general en cuanto a hectáreas plantadas. Los grandes desafíos de hoy en día se concentran en el tema varietal.

En este aspecto Onubafruit ha estado siempre en cabeza y este año tenemos plantadas más de dos millones y medio de plantas que corresponden a variedades nuevas. A partir de ahora, quien no tenga variedades propias a su alcance o no esté en algún club, no creo que tenga mucho futuro. ¿Cómo ven ustedes la amenaza de la frambuesa marroquí?

¿Cómo cree que puede solucionarse el problema del arándano?

Este avanzado desarrollo varietal es el que nos permite alcanzar cifras como las 36.000 toneladas de fresas, las 12 de frambuesas y las 16 en arándanos que tenemos previsto comercializar este año.

Todo ello sin contar las casi 10.000 toneladas de caqui, 16.000 de cítricos y 10.000 de aguacate.

La expansión internacional es un hecho del que ustedes no hablan mucho, pero Onubafruit está presente en Reino Unido y también en Holanda.

Sí, efectivamente estamos operativos en Reino Unido y tener una base allí será una ventaja para trabajar en el momento en que la isla se convierta en un país tercero.

Por otro lado, también contamos con una sede en Holanda, en la que se trabaja muy de cerca con el tema varietal. Además, diré que en poco tiempo estaremos presentes en otras localizaciones que sorprenderán.

Today’s important challenges are concentrated on the subject of variety. On this point, Onubafruit has always been in the lead, and this year we have planted over two and a half million units corresponding to new varieties. At this point in time, I believe that there is not much future for those who don’t have their own varieties or who don’t belong to a club.

How do you see the threat of Moroccan raspberries?

I think that we must be practical and assume that it is a fact that we must live with because today we are in a globalised world. Mind you, all the produce arriving in Europe must have the same production requirements and specifications as in EU countries. I think that we must devote our efforts to selling and not spend our days getting upset about this. There are professional organisations that represent us and that are devoted to defending us from this type of situation.

This advanced variety development allows us to reach figures such as the 36,000 tonnes of strawberries, 12 of raspberries and 16 of bilberries that we plan to market this year. All of this without taking into account the almost 10,000 tonnes of persimmons, 16,000 of citrus fruits and 10,000 of avocados.

International expansion is a fact that you don’t talk about much, but Onubafruit is present in the United Kingdom and also in Holland.

Yes, indeed, we operate in the United Kingdom, and having a base there will be an advantage for our work after Brexit. On the other hand, we also have premises in Holland, where we work very closely with the varieties.

Furthermore, I should say that in the near future we will be present in other, surprising locations.

At Onubafruit, an essential point for our fruit to be profitable is our differentiation capacity compared to our competition, and that we are able to offer a value proposal that meets our clients’ and consumers’ needs. For this reason, we have opted for the raspberry varieties that we market exclusively: Imara, Kweli, Lagorai, Vajolet, Shani, Wengi and Malling Bella.

How do you think that the bilberry problem could be resolved?

Basically, the problem lies in the fact that we have planted more bilberries than can reasonably be sold. I would dare to say that the crisis will be longstanding, if not permanent.

But you are not slowing down your collaborations to obtain better varieties?

Obviously, but this is not something that is only restricted to bilberries; this is the case for all our products.

uan Miguel Tirado, gerente de la compañía moguereña, explicó a Fruit Today que en esta temporada contarán con las mismas hectáreas, alrededor de 450, “aunque está por ver cómo se traducirá en términos productivos porque que el año pasado la meteorología fue muy favorable y hubo una superproducción”. Grufesa alcanzó una comercialización de casi 20 millones de kilos en fresco.

“En arándanos, Huelva ha mantenido una producción sin modular y la debemos controlar”

Las hectáreas dedicadas al arándano marcarán la excepción con un ligero descenso y la firma se dispone a plantar nuevas variedades que eviten el colapso del sector en un periodo de tiempo muy corto: “Creo que el sector, hasta ahora, ha mantenido una producción sin modular, nada acorde con el consumo, y será un aspecto que tendremos que controlar.”

Respecto a la fresa, el directivo asegura que “debemos ser cautelosos con los volúmenes y las variedades, y mimar el producto”.

En este sentido, las variedades más representativas de la compañía son Rociera, Rábida, Fortuna y San Andreas. “Ya hemos recolectado San Andreas y estamos haciendo pruebas con Savana y Frontera, de las que ya tenemos pequeñas producciones”, agregó.

En cuanto a tecnología se refiere, este año se comenzará a trabajar con un proyecto de big data para conocer las previsiones de producción y se ensayará con procesos de recepción de la fruta a través del móvil, en vez de PC. Su línea diferenciadora en packaging ha apostado por dar valor a diferentes celebraciones con envases especiales para el Día de la Madre, para San Valentín, Navidad o Pascua.

Este año será la cuarta edición del programa ‘Cultiva tus valores’, enfocado a niños desde segundo de primaria.

Nutrición, deporte, valores laborales y sociales y sostenibilidad son los cinco temas que se abordan. En total, unos 1.500 niños se benefician de este programa, que cuenta con una excelente acogida por la comunidad educativa.

Regarding technology, this year it has started working with a big data project to find out about production forecasts and it will be carrying out trials with fruit reception processes using mobile phones, instead of computers. Its differentiating packaging line has opted for giving value to different celebrations with special packages for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas or Easter.

This year will be the fourth edition of the ‘Cultivate your values’/‘Cultiva tus valores’ programme, focused on children from the second year in primary school.

Nutrition, sports, working and social values, along with sustainability are the five topics covered. In total, around 1,500 children will benefit from this programme, which has been very well received by the educational community.

In the first stage of its membership as a signatory of the Global Compact, the company will concentrate on three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mainly on No. 3, ‘Good Health and Well-being’, No. 7 ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’ and No. 9, related to ‘Industry, innovation and infrastructure’.

“En Intercitrus hay diferen entrada o no en la WCO y l Fruit Today euromagazine habló con Enrique Bellés, presidente de Intercitrus, en relación a los avances de la interprofesional y la posición que ésta mantiene respecto a la Organización Mundial de Cítricos “Generaré dinámicas para que no se pare en seco el proceso de activación de Intercitrus” ¿Sería lógico quedarnos solos?

Lo que es lógico, o no, es algo subjetivo.

De hecho, entre los socios de la interprofesional hay distintas opiniones respecto a la entrada o no en la WCO. De momento, la puerta para entrar en un futuro no está cerrada, pero también es cierto que no se ha generado el mejor clima para atraer a quien tiene dudas o recelos. En este sentido, sería bueno un ambiente de menos crispación entre algunos posicionamientos. Solo las buenas razones, y no otras cuestiones, determinarán la opción final de cada una de las organizaciones socias de la interprofesional.

¿Cuándo conoce Intercitrus que se estaba poniendo en marcha una Organización Mundial de los Cítricos (WCO)? ¿Por qué no la hemos encabezado nosotros, los mayores productores y exportadores?

La primera comunicación que tuvimos en Intercitrus fue el día 24 de septiembre, fecha en la que se celebró la Asamblea General de la interprofesional. En esa ocasión, el representante de la Industria, el director de Ailimpo, informó del proyecto y me invitó, en calidad de presidente de Intercitrus, al acto de presentación de este nuevo foro. Independientemente del posicionamiento de los socios, en esa fecha, tuve un compromiso personal que me impidió asistir al encuentro.

Respecto a la segunda pregunta, es fácil que una organización virtual y sin actividad, más allá de la de los socios que la componen, esté al margen de cosas que ocurren en relación con el sector y por ello sería bueno generar una estructura propia que trabaje en la interprofesional. ¿Cuál es el posicionamiento de Intercitrus?

En estos momentos no existe unanimidad al respecto (los estatutos la exigen) motivo por el cual no se puede adoptar el acuerdo de incorporación al proyecto. No obstante, entiendo que la actuación futura de la WCO dirá si los motivos de los socios de Intercitrus para fundamentar su opinión actual se mantienen o se modifican. ¿Qué podría ocurrir en Fruit Logistica con este hecho? De momento ya hay incorporados 7 países más que en octubre.

¿Cómo ha avanzado Intercitrus desde la última vez que hablamos? Esto fue en septiembre, antes de comenzar la campaña.

Ha ocurrido lo que estaba previsto. Ha habido distintas reuniones de sus órganos de gobierno, como es normal en cualquier organización. Es cierto que, aunque se están generando una serie de expectativas, el devenir de la campaña genera un clima propicio a la tranquilidad; pero ya tenemos pactado un plan de trabajo que ahora hay que poner en marcha. ¿Se está poniendo en marcha la Interprofesional de verdad? ¿O cómo ya dicen algunas voces, poco se mueve y no es a la velocidad apropiada porque sólo nos acordamos de la unión en momentos de pánico?

La larga inactividad de Intercitrus obliga a empezar desde cero, para volver a construir sus cimientos. Esta parte de la estructura no se ve y se puede tener la percepción de que la obra no avanza. Ya hemos identificado los temas a tratar, integrado a representantes de todas las

The Industry’s representative, the manager of Ailimpo reported on the project and he invited me, as the chairman of Intercitrus, to the presentation ceremony of this new forum. With respect to the second question, it is easy for a virtual organisation, without any activity, beyond that of its members, to be on the sidelines of things that happen in relation to the sector and for this reason, it would be good for its own structure to be generated that works in the Interprofessional Association.

What is Intercitrus’ position?

At present, there is no unanimous decision on this point (something that is required by the articles of association); therefore the incorporation agreement to the project cannot be adopted. However, I understand that the future action of the WCO will say whether it upholds or modifies Intercitrus’ members’ reasons for their current opinion.

What could happen at Fruit Logistica regarding this fact?

At the moment, another 7 countries have joined since October. Would it be logical to stay out on our own?

Whether it is logical or not is subjective. In fact, amongst the members of the interprofessional association there are different opinions on entering the WCO or not. Currently, the door remains open for us to enter in the future, but it is also true that the best environment to attract those with doubts or misgivings has not been generated. a good idea. Only good reasons, and not other questions, will determine the final option of each of the organisations belonging to the Interprofessional Association.

How has Intercitrus moved forwards since we last talked in September, before the campaign started?

The forecasts have been met. There have been different meetings of its governing bodies, as is normal in any organisation. It is true that, although a series of expectations is being generated, the future of the campaign is bringing about a calm environment; but we have already agreed on a road map that we now must put into action.

Is the Interprofessional Association really starting up? Or, as some people are saying, not a great deal is happening and not at the right speed because we only agreed on the union at a time of panic?

Intercitrus’ long period of inactivity meant starting from scratch, in order to build its foundations again. This part of the structure cannot be seen and this might make it seem that the work is not moving forwards. We have already identified the issues to be addressed, integrating representatives from all the production regions and the work groups will soon be convened. This dynamic will prevent digression and will aid the possibility of defining the questions.

As the chairman, I will try to generate dynamics to ensure that the activation process of Intercitrus is not stopped in its tracks, but I believe it is better to go slowly, but surely.

Is Intercitrus considering changing the articles of association regarding unanimity for adopting decisions?

This debate is one of the issues included in the plan of action for the next few months. The decision that is adopted will depend on the determination of the members, regardless of my personal opinion.

La fortaleza del músculo exportador La continua diversificación de su comercio en el exterior es una de las fortalezas del sector citrícola español

a campaña 2018-19, la que se recordará históricamente por su gravedad, alcanzó, sin embargo, la mayor diversificación de destinos en el comercio exterior. En total España vendió a 93 países, y todo ello a pesar de los exigentes protocolos que algunos países exigen para su entrada.

Esta penetración mantiene una tónica ascendente desde 1975, todo y que la U.E. es el mayor mercado para el cítrico español, y donde se queda el 90,91% del producto.

El montante español de exportaciones citrícolas alcanzó en 2017 un 22,03%, es decir, somos los mayores exportadores de cítricos en fresco, con 3.711.435 tm.

La exportación mundial de cítricos alcanza los 15,5 millones de tm y, aunque hay muchos actores tanto en el hemisferio norte como sur, tres países monopolizan casi un 50% de la cuota mundial del comercio citrícola: España, Sudáfrica y Turquía, en concreto representan el 47 %.

El goloso mercado europeo Sin embargo, y como es lógico, España mira de reojo la actuación de otros productores y su confluencia en los mercados. La globalización es un hecho.

a Europa el 41% de sus exportaciones, principalmente satsumas. Chile mantiene la misma tónica que Perú, pero en principio, es un país muy decantado por el mercado norteamericano.

El 38% de las exportaciones egipcias tienen como punto final la U.E., principalmente con naranjas y se alza como un claro competidor en precios, aunque no en calidad, de momento.

Marruecos confluye en Europa y de su producción, el 46% llega a la U.E, y significan 275.000 tm. Se alza como un claro competidor, donde destaca su Nadorcott.

Las exportaciones turcas han crecido entre 2005 y 2017 casi un 100 % pero el país se ha volcado, tras el embargo decretado por Rusia, en las ventas a este país.

Finalmente, Sudáfrica entre 2005 y 2017 ha disminuido sus exportaciones a la U.E. casi un 10%. Todo ello debido a que en la última década ha realizado una gran reconversión varietal (ha perdido 340.000 toneladas de pomelos y 54.000 toneladas de naranjas), pero ha crecido desmesuradamente en su exportación de mandarinas, que pasa de 91.000 a 200.000 tm, y sus plantaciones en las diferentes regiones productoras siguen aumentando.

The strength of exporting muscle The continuous diversification of its foreign trade is one of the strengths of the Spanish citrus fruit growing sector.

The 2018-19 campaign, which will be recorded historically for its severity, reached the greatest diversification of destinations for Spanish exports. In total, Spain sold to 93 countries and all of this in spite of the demanding protocols that some countries require for allowing produce to enter.

This penetration has followed a rising trend since 1975, although the EU is the largest market for Spanish citrus fruit, where 90.91% of its produce remains.

The total of Spanish citrus fruit exports in 2017 reached 22.03%, that is to say, we are the largest exporters of fresh citrus fruit, with 3,711,435 tonnes.

World citrus fruit exports reached 15.5 million tones and although there are many agents from both hemispheres, three countries monopolise virtually 50% of the world market share of the citrus fruit trade: Spain, South Africa and Turkey.

However, as is logical, Spain is keeping an eye on actions by other producers and their convergence on the markets, mainly in Europe.

38% of Egyptian exports end up in the EU, mainly oranges and it is a clear competitor in prices, although at present, it cannot compete in quality.

46% of Moroccan exports, that is to say, 275,000 tonnes stay on the Old Continent, where their Nadorcott oranges are very popular.

Finally, South Africa decreased its exports to the EU between 2005 and 2017 by almost 10%. This was due to the fact that over the past decade it has carried out an important variety conversion (it lost 340,000 tonnes of grapefruit and 54,000 tonnes of oranges), but its mandarin exports have grown beyond measure, going from 91,000 tonnes to 200,000 tonnes and its plantations in the different producing regions continue to increase.

ara la cooperativa valenciana de Carlet la situación no ha sido distinta a la tendencia general.

De hecho, como nos recuerda su gerente, José Climent, “debido a la falta tan temprana de clementinas, van a entrar en juego variedades que llegan después de Reyes, como la Tango, e incluso la Nadorcott que estará en el mercado antes que nunca.”

en un ambiente comercial de tranquilidad, de manera súbita se aceleró conforme se recolectaban las diferentes variedades: Satsumas, Marisoles o Clemenules. “Ha sido sorprendente la velocidad que han cogido los mercados, hasta el punto de que a finales de noviembre todas las variedades de clementinas estaban agotadas. Es una campaña con un buen comportamiento en demanda y precios”

El trayecto de la naranja también ha sido muy rápido y el campo vive ciertos momentos especulativos. Sin embargo, esta categoría puede tener dificultades en el terreno comercial al entrar en juego la competencia egipcia con precios inferiores. Todo y que esta situación especulativa no acaba de reflejarse en los precios reales de la gran distribución.

Respecto a los temas fundamentales que atañen y preocupaban sobre manera al sector el año pasado, Climent cree que “pronto nos olvidamos de los problemas si la campaña mantiene cierta bonanza. Aunque los asuntos siguen sin resolverse, sobre todo cuando se habla de unión para defender unos intereses comunes en el lugar adecua-

do, que no es otro que Bruselas. Creo, personalmente, que otros han empezado a hacer los deberes que nosotros debíamos haber hecho antes y éstos marcarán la pauta. Si estuviéramos dentro, al menos, nos enteraríamos”, en clara alusión a la World Citrus Organization (WCO).

Y remarca que “las estrategias políticas de cualquier país que se precie pasan por ser autosuficientes en materia alimentaria, y Europa parece que va mostrando otra disposición. A este paso vamos a depender de países terceros para alimentarnos.”

Un nuevo proyecto valenciano de integración Aunque en el momento de escribir estas líneas no había sido anunciado de forma oficial, con el objeto de reforzar su posición, mejorar su competitividad y su orientación al mercado, la cooperativa de la Ribera está a punto de hacer realidad un proyecto de integración con otra entidad que le permitirá crecer y aprovechar sinergias.

“We are experiencing an accelerated campaign” The current citrus fruit campaign is completely opposite to the previous one. The reason? Much lower volumes (-20%).

For the Valencian cooperative Carlet, the situation is no different than the general trend. In fact, as its manager, José Climent tells us, “due to the shortage of clementines very early on, varieties arriving after the 6th of January will come into play, such as the Tango, and even the Nadorcott, which will be on the market earlier than ever.”

The campaign started off in a calm commercial situation, but it suddenly speeded up as the different varieties were harvested: Satsumas, Marisoles or Clemenules. “The speed gained by the markets is surprising, to the point that at the end of November all the clementine varieties were sold out. It is a campaign with good behaviour in both demand and prices.”

Oranges have also taken off very fast and the fields are experiencing a certain speculation. However, this category could have difficulties commercially, as it comes into competition with Egyptian produce with lower prices. This speculative situation is not really being reflected in the real prices in the large distribution networks.

Regarding the essential subjects that particularly worried and concerned the sector last year, Climent believes that “we are quick to forget the problems

if the campaign maintains a certain upswing. Although the subjects remain unresolved, particularly when talking about a union to defend common interests in the right place, which has to be Brussels. I personally think that others are starting to do the homework that we should have done before and they will mark out the guidelines. If we were in it, at least, we would find out what was going on,” in a clear allusion to the World Citrus Organization (WCO).

And he asserts that “the political strategies of any country worth its salt include being self-sufficient on the subject of food, and Europe seems to be moving in a completely different direction. At this rate we are going to depend on third countries to feed us.”

A new Valencian integration project Although when writing these lines it had not been officially announced, in order to strengthen its position, improve its competitiveness and its marketorientation, the cooperative from La Ribera is about to start an integration project with another organisation that will allow it to grow and take advantage of synergies.

AT Síntesis fue una de las empresas pioneras. Fruit Today tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con José Carrascal sobre este mercado y la actual campaña citrícola.

La falta de calidad no ha repercutido en los precios en campo

La firma cuenta con sede propia, almacén y red comercial en Shanghái y tiene un acuerdo con una empresa australiana para proveer permanentemente al dragón asiático. ¿Cómo está transcurriendo la primera parte de esta campaña, que pronto llega a su fin?

Primero hay que apuntar que estamos en un marco de cosecha de un 20% a un 30% menos. Las Navelinas han sido de una calidad mediana; estaban rozadas y los árboles tenían poca carga. Esta menor producción hizo que los precios en campo se mantuvieran; es más, han sido los de una campaña de calidad normal, en la que la falta de calidad no ha repercutido. ¿Qué se espera de la segunda parte?

Las variedades que pronto entrarán en el mercado (Navel, Chisllet, Powel, etc.) también mantienen esta falta de volúmenes, pero tienen buena calidad. Ya se está detectando una cierta especulación y los precios están subiendo muy por encima de lo que puede ser una campaña normal.

La falta de kilos, que no es única en el mercado español, está provocando que los grandes operadores estén comprando y acaparando para no fallar a la distribución.

Evidentemente, este hecho hace que los precios suban porque hay mucho dinamismo de compras en el campo.

Ustedes representan una empresa volcada en los mercados internacionales 36 Fruittoday

y están presentes en el mercado chino desde la aprobación del protocolo. ¿Cómo transcurren los envíos?

En la primera parte de campaña sólo hemos enviado seis contenedores porque China está en producción. Tienen una menor cosecha, pero suficiente y la Navelina no es una naranja que les agrade en exceso. Aun así, hemos cargado M7 para llegar antes del Año Nuevo Chino, que empieza a partir del 15 de enero. ¿Cree que los exportadores españoles han sabido posicionarse en este gran mercado?

China es un país difícil.

Creo que muchos se tomaron este mercado de manera muy alegre, sin previo análisis ni estrategia porque no se pueden aplicar los mismos criterios que si se vende en Alemania. Para llegar bien a China debe de existir una organización del sistema desde el minuto uno. La recolección en campo es uno de los momentos más críticos debido al tratamiento en frío que se nos exige. Por este motivo, la piel debe estar muy curtida y rematada si no se quiere correr el riesgo de manchado.

creemos que no volverá a pasar. ¿Qué papel juega el mercado europeo?

En Europa, incluso este año con menos producción, se da una guerra exacerbada por bajar los precios y la amenaza respecto a ser sustituidos por proveedores griegos o egipcios, es continua.

En circunstancias como las que se pueden producir ahora, en las que quizás haya que desverdizar Lanes en diciembre, no somos capaces de pelear un precio acorde con las circunstancias. A partir de ahora tenemos a Egipto en el mercado y es una competencia muy dura que cada vez lo hace mejor. Creo que en pocos años Egipto adelantará a España como primer exportador. Esperamos no haber comprado muy alto en campo y que lleguen los egipcios bajando precios.

Hay que tener en cuenta que el tiempo de tránsito es largo y siempre pueden existir nuevas complicaciones. El año pasado hubo una presencia masiva de Antracnosis, que aquí no se detectó y siguió progresando durante el viaje. Al llegar allí los cítricos tenían la piel marrón. Este año, hemos realizado tratamientos específicos durante la floración y la maduración y

¿Qué opinan de la nueva Organización Mundial para el sector?

En Asociafruit no hemos tomado una decisión todavía. A nivel personal, desconozco los objetivos y propósitos de ésta, pero si su objetivo es bueno para el sector, a priori, le comento que deberíamos estar.

“The Chinese market was tackled in a very slapdash way” After signing the protocol with China (2015), many operators launched onto the Asian giant’s market, but not all of them managed to stay and make a name for their brands SAT Síntesis was one of the pioneer companies. Fruit Today had the chance to talk to José Carrascal about this market and the current citrus fruit campaign.

Do you think that Spanish exporters have known how to position themselves on this great market?

The company has its own head offices, warehouse and sales network in Shanghai, and it has an agreement with an Australian company to permanently supply the Asian dragon.

China is a difficult country. I think that many people took this market on in a slapdash way, without any preliminary analysis or strategy, because the same criteria used in Germany cannot be applied here. To reach China well, the system must be organised from the word go. The harvesting in the fields is one of the most critical moments due to the cold processing that they demand of us. For this reason, the skin must be well weathered and finished in order to escape the risk of blemished fruit.

How is the first part of this campaign, which is about to reach its end, proceeding?

Firstly, we must point out that we have a harvest framework of between 20% and 30% less. The Navelinas are of average quality; they are chafed and the trees have little fruit. This lower production meant that the prices in the fields were maintained; moreover, these prices were the same as those of a campaign with normal quality, where the lack of quality has not made an impact.

What do you expect for the second part of the campaign?

The varieties that will come onto the market soon (Navel, Chislett, Powel, etc.) are continuing with this lack of volume, but they have good quality. A certain amount of speculation is being detected and the prices are rising above those of a normal campaign. The lack of kilos, which is not unique to the Spanish market, is causing the large operators to buy and corner the market in order to be able to supply the distribution chains. Obviously, this fact means that the prices rise because there is an important dynamism when purchasing in the fields.

You represent a company that is focused on the international markets and has been present on the Chinese market since the protocol was approved. How is the shipping proceeding?

In the first part of the campaign we have only sent six containers because China is in its production phase. They have a smaller harvest, but it is enough and the Chinese consumers are not particularly keen on the Navelina orange. Even so, we have loaded M7 to arrive before the Chinese New1Year, which starts on the 15th of January.

It must be taken into account that the transit time is long and new complications can always arise. Last year, there was a massive presence of anthracnose, which was not detected here and progressed during the journey.

When they arrived there, the citrus fruit had brown skins. This year, we have carried out specific treatments during the flowering and ripening phases and we believe that it won’t happen again.

What role does the European market play?

In Europe, even this year with less production, there is an escalating war to drop the prices and there is a continuous threat of being replaced by Greek or Egyptian suppliers.

In circumstances such as the ones that could arise now, where we might have to degreen Lanes in December, we can’t fight for a price in line with the circumstances. At this point in time, we have Egyptian fruit on the market and it is a very tough rival that is getting better all the time. I think that in a few years’ time Egypt will overtake Spain as the leading exporter. We hope we have not purchased at high prices in the fields, for the Egyptians to come along dropping the prices.

What do you think about the new World Organisation for the sector?

At Asociafruit, we have not yet made a decision. Personally, I don’t know the organisation’s goals and intentions, but if its aim is good for the sector, a priori, I would say that we should be in it.

ompetencia, sostenibilidad, reestructuración, fortalezas, pero también algunas incongruencias del sistema ocupan nuestra charla.

¿Vamos a necesitar unos volúmenes más cortos para que las campañas funcionen bien? ¿Qué cree que aprendimos la pasada campaña?

El año pasado alcanzamos la tercera cifra récord de exportación y el problema más importante que tuvimos se centró en el aprovechamiento de la fruta y en su calidad gustativa, que provocó que no fuéramos la primera opción para la gran distribución europea.

Hay cultivos en España que han reestructurado su oferta o están en ello (la fresa alcanzó las 10.000 h y ahora está en 6.000 y en el hueso hay arranques). ¿Cree que habría que pensar en esta posibilidad?

Creo que la oferta se autorregula sola y que no hay que hacerlo de una manera artificial. La ordenación de nuestro sector se da poco a poco, con una tendencia cada vez mayor hacia fincas grandes y una gradual desaparición del minifundio.

El mercado en sí mismo actúa de forma inteligente: lo que vale se queda y lo que no, tiende a desaparecer.

¿Tiene usted la sensación de que después de las numerosas reuniones, ríos de tinta y tertulias del año pasado, se han hecho los deberes para que el sector no vuelva a padecer?

Creo que hemos sensibilizado al sector de que unido es más poderoso que haciendo la guerra cada uno por su lado, y en la medida que esta unión fructifique, seremos más fuerte y compactos. Al final, debemos entender que el principal enemigo no es el producto español sino el producto no europeo porque juega con ventajas en costes, en tratamientos y en exigencias.

La presión por parte de la gran distribución continúa siendo muy fuerte y más de un operador comenta que los supermercados europeos no entienden que esta campaña es diferente. ¿Qué opina de este hecho?

Los mercados europeos, que están perfectamente regulados, prefieren el producto español por su servicio, su calidad gustativa y su garantía respecto a la seguridad alimentaria. Ahora bien, todos los mercados tienen unos precios de referencia y no nos podemos salir de este margen porque sino nos quedamos sin los programas. ¿Sigue usted manteniendo que la Cleme-

nules y la Navelina son dos variedades en crisis? La escasez de la primera ha sido una evidencia y la Navelina no ha tenido la mejor calidad y su precio en campo se ha mantenido.

Sí, creo que hay un desajuste entre su volumen productivo, que en una situación normal es de entorno a un 40% del total de la producción citrícola y un nicho de mercado temporal del 25%. Fuera de estas dos variedades, puede haber otras problemáticas, pero no son del mismo calado y profundidad. Y sino, esperemos a ver lo que sucede el año que viene. El resto de variedades no tienen exceso de oferta y funcionan de forma más estable.

Los exportadores sudafricanos mantienen que desean ver a los valencianos dentro del gran lobby mundial, WCO, al que acaban de adherirse siete nuevos países. ¿Qué opina?

Creo que la WCO no representa los intereses de la agricultura europea, sino los de un lobby mercantil que se sitúa en el norte de Europa y en Sudáfrica.

Acaban de quitarnos un nuevo pesticida, precisamente para afrontar una plaga foránea. ¿Qué hace el sector ante estos hechos?

Creo que es nuestro deber moral mantener unas producciones más respetuosas con el medio ambiente, pero el consumidor no debe olvidar que los productos que se

utilizan son para salvaguardar la calidad y la seguridad alimentaria. A veces se llegan a demonizar productos que no tienen evidencia científica de que sean perjudiciales para la salud, y en realidad, detrás hay grandes lobbies de presión respecto al producto que se autoriza o no.

Es todo un sistema de intereses comerciales muy potente.

En Europa anhelamos una agricultura que tienda a la justicia social, a la sostenibilidad medioambiental y que vele por la salud de los ciudadanos, pero al mismo tiempo permitimos la entrada de fruta de terceros países que ha sido tratada con productos que aquí hemos prohibido. ¿No resulta contradictorio?

A lo mejor, desde esas instancias superiores que se llenan la boca con la defensa de la agricultura, lo que de verdad se pretende es convertir a Europa en un continente de servicios e industria y dejar la agricultura en manos de los países en desarrollo, y nadie se da cuenta del peligro que implica dejar la alimentación en manos de terceros, es un pilar estratégico de cualquier país.

“Our competition comes from outside Europe” Quico Cañamas, Operations Manager from Cañamas Hermanos, and Fruit Today covered some of the hottest topics for the sector in this interview.

Competition, sustainability, re-structuring, strengths, but also some of the system’s incongruities were the topics covered in our chat.

Are we going to need smaller volumes to ensure that the campaigns work well? What do you think we learnt from the previous campaign?

Last year we reach the third record figure for exports and the most important problem we had involved the use of the fruit and its organoleptic quality, which meant that we were not the first option for the European large-scale distributors.

Some crops in Spain have had their offer restructured or are in the process of doing this (strawberries reached 10,000 h and are now at 6,000 h and there are grubbing operations for stone fruit in process). Do you think that we should be thinking about this possibility?

Do you still think that Clemenules and Navelina are two varieties in crisis?

The shortage of the former is self-evident and Navelina has not had the best quality and its price in the fields has been maintained.

Yes, I think there is an imbalance between the productive volume, which in a normal situation is around 40% of the total production and a seasonal market niche of 25%. Outside these two varieties, there might be other problems, but they are not as deep-seated and significant. And if not, we should wait to see what happens next year. The other varieties do not have an over-supply problem and they work in a more stable way.

South African exporters maintain that they want to see Valencian operators in the great world lobby, WCO, which seven new countries have just joined.

What is your opinion?

I think that the offer is self-regulating and, therefore, it does not have to be done artificially. Our sector is slowly but surely becoming organised, with an increasing trend towards large farms and a gradual disappearance of smallholdings. The market itself acts intelligently: the elements that are worthwhile remain and the ones that aren’t tend to disappear.

I think that the WCO does not represent the interests of European agriculture, but rather those of a mercantile lobby that is located in northern Europe and South Africa.

Do you feel that after many meetings, articles and debates last year, the homework has been done to ensure that the sector does not suffer again?

I think that it is our moral duty to maintain productions that are more environmentally friendly, but consumers must not forget that the products used are to safeguard the quality and food safety. At times products are demonised, although there is no scientific evidence that they are harmful to health and the truth is that there are important lobbies putting pressure on whether a product is authorised or not. It is a very powerful, complete system of interests.

I think that we have made the sector aware that together it is more powerful than each company fighting their wars on their own, and as long as this union remains fruitful, we will be stronger and more compact. In the end, we must understand that the main enemy is not Spanish produce, but rather nonEuropean produce, because it has a head start in costs, treatments and in requirements.

The pressure from the large-scale distributors continues to be very strong and more than one operator comments that the European supermarkets do not understand that this campaign is different. What is your opinion about this?

The European markets, which are perfectly regulated, prefer Spanish produce due to its service, organoleptic quality and its guarantees in terms of food safety. That said, all the markets have some reference prices and we cannot distance ourselves from this margin because we will lose the programmes.

A new pesticide has just been removed, specifically for tackling a foreign pest. What is the sector doing in view of these facts?

In Europe, we aspire to a farming system that tends towards social justice, environmental sustainability and that looks after citizens’ health, but at the same time we allow the entry of fruit from third countries that has been treated with products that are banned here. A contradiction in terms, I would say.

Perhaps these higher instances that are quick to defend farming, are really intending is to turn Europe into a continent of services and industry, and leave farming in the hands of developing countries, and nobody realises the danger involved in leaving food in the hands of third parties; it is a strategic pillar of any country.

La industria ha ayudado con el precio marcado para la Owari y ha permitido mantener los precio en fresco

a incorporación de nuevas parcelas de cítricos va a permitir que la cooperativa se adentre en la segunda parte de campaña.

“Nuestro objetivo pasa por dar continuidad al almacén y a nuestros clientes; este año completaremos el ciclo con mandarinas hasta marzo y también con las diferentes variedades de naranjas tardías” asegura Pedro Sánchez, gerente de la entidad.

Desde su creación en 1910, esta cooperativa situada en la comarca de la Ribera del Xúquer (Valencia) es un eje económico fundamental de la zona debido a su fuerte impacto social ya que más de 2.000 personas trabajan en ella, y transciende a muchos otros empleos. Solo unas cifras avalan este dato: desde el 15 de septiembre al 15 de diciembre por la central pasan 50 millones de kilos, entre kaki y cítricos.

“El objetivo es llegar a los 70,” remarca Sánchez.

La cooperativa está centrada en variedades tipo Satsuma (Okitsu y Owari). La variedad más precoz, Okitsu, es una fruta que este año compite en el mercado debido a su precocidad con las últimas mandarinas procedentes de ultramar.

Por su parte, Owari que, aunque tiene su gran parte de mercado en el consumo en fresco, tiene en la industria del gajo otra posible salida (CANSO pertenece a Agriconsa). Esta variedad ha mantenido un buen comportamiento comercial y de calidad, con lo que ha permitido que tuviera un precio similar a las clementinas.

En líneas generales, “podemos hablar de que las clementinas han tenido un precio superior a la pasada campaña, pero ha habido muchos agricultores a los que les ha faltado rendimiento por superficie, lo que redundará en sus liquidaciones”.

Al igual que ha sucedido a todo el sector, la escasez de Clemenules antes de final de año, ha hecho que otras variedades se adelanten. “No es habitual confeccionar Clemenvillas antes de Navidad, pero lo tuvimos que hacer”, concluye el ejecutivo.

El otro gran producto de la cooperativa, el kaki, está acabando una campaña complicada en precios debido a una oferta completa y en parte desorganizada, no obstante, hay que señalar que ya hace tres años que se aconseja a los agricultores que no planten más kaki.

“Our aim includes giving continuity to the warehouse and to our clients; this year we will complete the cycle with mandarins until March and also with different varieties of late oranges,” states Pedro Sánchez, manager of the organisation.

Since its creation in 1910, this cooperative located in the region of la Ribera del Xúquer (Valencia) is an essential economic hub point for the region, due to its important social impact, as over 2,000 people work in it, as well as giving employment to many others indirectly.

In general, “we can talk about the fact that clementines have had higher prices than last campaign, but many farmers have had a bad yield per surface area, which will show in their bottom line.”

As has occurred throughout the entire sector, the shortage of Clemenules before the end of the year has meant that other varieties have been brought forward. “It is not normal to prepare Clemenvillas before Christmas, but we have had to do it,” the executive concludes.

The cooperative’s other important product, the persimmon, is finishing a complicated campaign with regard to prices, due to a complete and partially disorganised offer.

However, it is worth mentioning that farmers have been advised for over three years now not to plant more persimmons.

Para nosotros también es fundamental la formación y asesoramiento de los técnicos, no solo en el manejo del control biológico mediante la introducción de insectos, sino también en el manejo del control biológico por conservación (manejo de cubiertas vegetales, gestión de malas hierbas, instalación de setos, etc.) que resulta una herramienta fundamental para el control de plagas como trips o pulgón.

What new developments will we see in the near future? What are you working on?

Over the next few years, we will have macro and micro biological solutions to control emerging pests, white fly, leafhoppers, aphids, etc., as well as improving the ones already existing.

For us, the training and guidance of the technicians is essential, not only in the handling of the biological control using the introduction of insects, but also in the handling of the biological control for conservation (handling vegetable cover, weed management, installation of hedges, etc.) which is an essential tool for controlling pests such as thrips or aphids.

“No se ha dado la importancia debida al cambio climático” El cultivo de brócoli se resiente por la DANA y los vaivenes de temperaturas, pero los programas se cumplirán con márgenes “ajustados” esta Navidad

l pasado mes de septiembre la DANA asoló campos enteros en el sureste español. Desde que existen registros, nunca había caído tanta agua en un solo día en Murcia, donde se recogieron 169 l. El brócoli fue uno de los cultivos afectados, pero afortunadamente la rápida respuesta de los productores ha “normalizado” la campaña y no se espera escasez de producto para las semanas previas a Navidad y las festividades. “Iremos un poco justos, pero cumpliremos los programas”, asegura Nacho Doménech, presidente de la Sectorial de Brócoli y Coliflor de Proexport.

Las casas de semillas buscan variedades resistentes a temperaturas extremas

Las plantas y cultivos están cada vez más sometidos a estrés debido a la variabilidad meteorológica. Un tema que no ha dejado de sonar en las últimas semanas con el trasfondo de la COP25 Madrid, y que a pie de campo la realidad es más que palpable.

“Ya van dos lluvias torrenciales brutales en dos años”. Con los altibajos de temperatura “las plantas se estresan. Ciclos normales de 90 días se adelantan un poco, pero con mucho frío se atrasan a más de 120”.

Una situación “muy complicada”, que pone de manifiesto que “no se ha dado la importancia que se debía al cambio climático”, explica Doménech.

En declaraciones a Efeagro, José María Sumsi del Centro de Estudios e Investigación para la Gestión de Riesgos Agrarios y Medioambientales, pronosticó que “el mapa de cultivos en Europa cambiará debido al cambio climático. El agricultor se tendrá que adaptar no solo con las técnicas, sino incluso en cultivos”.

También se han hecho de emular el cultivo en Sevilla y Córdoba, pero “han sido fallidos y se están quitando por la humedad, porque pudre el producto”. Doménech mantiene que “no hay competencia para Murcia”, y ante los problemas climáticos recuerda que “en Murcia tenemos bastantes zonas para diversificar”. Algo que ya se está haciendo, y a lo que se añade “plantar todas las semanas prácticamente, para tener la mayor regularidad posible” y cumplir los programas.

Cifras 2019/20 La campaña actual será “estable”, con unas 600.000 t de brócoli (75-80% fresco) y 50.000 ha, según +Brócoli. La exportación empezó entre 15 y 20 días antes de lo habitual por los problemas que tuvieron otros orígenes al final de verano, y esa coyuntura motivó un +20-25% de precio medio, según Doménech. Una tónica que se ha mantenido, con precios altos en los lineales y la práctica desaparición de las promociones a 0,99€ por pella, popularizadas en los últimos años en el retail y que podrían tener los días contados por el aumento de coste de los insumos (SMI y agua desalada a 0,60€/l).

En este otoño la exportación al mercado británico se ha desarrollado con total normalidad, manteniendo la fluidez del año pasado, aunque el sector sigue con la incertidumbre de saber qué consecuencias tendrá la salida de Reino Unido de la UE. “Seguimos preparándonos, y esperamos que el 31 de enero ya se concrete algo definitivo”, apunta Doménech. “No va a ser nada positivo, pero mientras tanto estamos preparando lo que podemos: temas de aduanas, Soivres, viendo la posibilidad de que importadores de Reino Unido se encarguen de hacer la importación de producto para los supermercados, y hay quien está optando por abrir allí sus propias empresas”. El propio Doménech ha hecho los ‘deberes’ en su empresa, Agromark, que ya puede cargar producto en su almacén e ir a cliente final, ejerciendo como aduana.

“Not enough importance has been given to climate change” The broccoli crop is suffering from the DANA and the ups and downs in temperatures, but the programmes will be met with “tight” margins this Christmas Last September, the DANA (Spanish acronym for “Isolated Depression at High Altitude) razed entire fields in south eastern Spain. Normal cycles of 90 days can come forward a little, but when the cold is intense, they get delayed to over 120 days.” A highly complicated situation that reveals that not enough importance has been given to climate change, Doménech explains.

In statements made to Efeagro, José María Sumsi from the Centro de Estudios e Investigación para la Gestión de Riesgos Agrarios y Medioambientales, forecasted that “the map of crops in Europe will be modified due to climate change. Farmers will have to adapt, not only the techniques, but also the crops.”

El mundo ‘brásica’ busca la especialización Bimi sigue expandiéndose mientras surgen otras alternativas.

En Gran Bretaña venden un % considerable de Tenderstem en mezcla con hortícolas y brásicas

l sector agrícola lleva años repitiendo un mantra: hay que apostar por el sabor y la diversificación. En el caso de las brásicas, hay un referente claro, Bimi. El cruce entre brócoli y una col china Kai-lan de Sakata ha logrado revolucionar el mercado a fuerza de perseverancia. Y es que, aunque es ahora cuando está popularizándose en España y otros países europeos, en el exigente mercado británico lleva 15 años comercializándose con éxito bajo la marca Tenderstem.

En España el primer intento de comercialización se produjo hace unos 10 años. “En aquella época, la sociedad estaba menos madura en lo que a concienciación de salud se refiere, su introducción fue lenta porque las tendencias de consumo eran otras”, explica Alberto Alapont, Food Chain Manager de Sakata. Posteriormente se relanzó la marca hace 4 o 5 años en España y Portugal. Entonces se decidió tomar otro camino, acompañándolo con una comunicación adecuada y acercándolo al consumidor para que lo degustara. Una estrategia vencedora, que ha logrado darlo a conocer de forma más masiva.

Cada vez son más las casas de semillas que han visto ese tirón, y lanzan productos que recuerdan a Bimi (los últimos, Redi de Bejo, EasyBroq de Syngenta y anteriormente el Bellaverde de Seminis y Calebrini en el caso de HM.CLAUSE).

Alapont asegura que, “visualmente no dejan de ser sprouting broccoli, pero en esencia la diferencia con Bimi es que son productos distintos, no tienen nada que ver en sabor”. Subsequently, the brand was relaunched 4 or 5 years ago in Spain and Portugal. A different route was decided on, accompanying it with the right communication and letting consumers try it. A winning strategy, which has managed to make it known on a mass scale.

More and more seed companies have seen this growth and are launching products that are reminiscent of Bimi (the latest ones are Redi from Bejo, EasyBroq from Syngenta and, prior to these, Bellaverde from Seminis and Calebrini in the case of HM.CLAUSE).

Alapont states that “visually it is still sprouting broccoli, but essentially the difference with Bimi is that they are two different products, the flavour is incomparable.” On the one hand, due to Bimi’s origin and on the other, due to the strict control over the marketing process, with product specifications, in order to guarantee that it is tender, smooth and sweet for consumers and that it is a profitable crop for the producers, as the labour requirements for this crop are significant.

One of the medium-term challenges is the mix format, one of the current consumption trends. For example, in Great Britain, a considerable percentage of Tenderstem is sold as a mixture with other vegetables and Brassicas (baby carrots, etc), as well as ‘frozen Tenderstem’.

La empresa incrementa sus gamas de brásicas y prevé crecer cerca del 20% en lechuga

n este 2019 Unexport ha celebrado su 20 aniversario con unas excelentes perspectivas de crecimiento, especialmente en el segmento ecológico, en el que ya cuentan con una veintena de productores de fruta de hueso, melón y sandía.

Y para la actual campaña 2019/20, el ritmo sigue al alza, con un volumen previsto de 310 millones de kilos entre las distintas referencias que comercializa.

En la campaña de invierno, la cooperativa de segundo grado continúa impulsando su gama de brócoli y lechuga, y espera totalizar unos 43 millones de kilos del primer grupo, y unos 23 del segundo. Para ello, dedica cinco de sus 19 almacenes a recepcionar y manipular estas materias primas. El arranque ha sido “bueno” en precios debido a la alta demanda que generó el adelanto de 15 días en la campaña de exportación y la falta de producto inicial por la riada en el Campo de Cartagena.

Entre las novedades que tendrá en brásicas para este año, el gerente de Unexport, Thomas Anderson, destaca dos: la incorporación a su gama de Redi, los nuevos brotes de brócoli morado de Bejo vía Sacoje; y la suma de la col crespa ecológica a su portfolio.

En la línea de lechugas, Unexport crecerá entre un 15-20% tanto en convencional como en bío. Iceberg, escarola, hoja de roble verde, lollos… su oferta es amplia, si bien permanecen atentos a las tendencias de mercado, que indican un “cierto descenso de la tipología de mayor consumo, la iceberg, en Europa Occiden-

tal, en favor de romana, cogollos y mini romana, con más sabor”. Al contrario, Polonia, Eslovenia y Eslovaquia incrementan la demanda de iceberg.

And for the current 2019/20 campaign, it continues to grow, with an expected volume of 310 million kilos, including all the different references that it markets.

In the winter campaign, the second degree cooperative continues to promote its broccoli and lettuce range, and it expects to reach a total of around 43 kilos from the first group and around 23 from the second one. To do this, it is devoting five of its 19 warehouses to receiving and handling these raw materials.

The campaign start has been “good” in terms of prices due to the high demand generated by a 15-day advance of the export campaigns and the shortage of initial produce due to the floods in the Campo de Cartagena.

Amongst this year’s new developments that the cooperative will have in brassicas, the manager of Unexport, Thomas Anderson, emphasises two: the incorporation of Redi, the new purple sprouting broccoli, from Bejo via Sacoje, to its range; and the adding of ecological kale to its portfolio.

With regard to lettuces, Unexport will grow by between 15-20%, both in conventional produce and in bio. Iceberg, curly endive, green oak leaf, lollo lettuces… it has a wide-ranging offer, although it pays attention to the market trends, which indicate a “drop in the most popular type, the Iceberg, in Western Europe, in favour of romaine, heads and mini romaine lettuce, with more flavour.” On the other hand, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia are increasing their demand for iceberg lettuces.

We have discovered varieties of white cabbage with double the vitamin C content of that found in oranges,” comments Enrique Cadiñanos, head of sales and development at Bejo. These materials are still in a developmental phase and they will be available in years to come, adding new references to the so-called functional foods. Before this, probably in 2020, new developments in broccoli will be presented.

Also in the cabbage line, they have recently launched Botran (white cabbage); Davaro (red cabbage), which reaped a great success at the Madrilenian trade fair, along with the pointed cabbage Antonio and the cauliflower Caniego.

In the snack segment, they have the ‘crispy’ kohlrabi Konan and baby carrots, with which they have seen a significant growth in sales with Mokum, an extremely sweet variety.

The commitment to flavour in Bejo’s new generation of materials is worth highlighting. For many years, the seed company has been working with the University of Wageningen, using panels of experts that carry out flavour tests, particularly with the snack varieties, but also for the entire range of conventional varieties for the fresh market.

La firma almeriense está ampliando además su gama de delifoods, un segmento en el que están experimentando un gran crecimiento, con opciones tipo Poké elaboradas con sus productos de hoja y legumbres (alubias, garbanzos…). Una opción de “comida completa y equilibrada, con todos los nutrientes que necesitamos y que además sacia”, explica a Fruit Today Cecilio Peregrín, director Corporativo de Primaflor.

Pero la cosa no queda ahí, el crecimiento de la gama va acompañado de una potente inversión en la ampliación de sus instalaciones de procesado para delifood y la compra de maquinaria, a las que ha destinado 3 millones de euros. Unas tareas que estarán listas, si todo marcha según lo previsto, en abril de 2020. También en este capítulo de inversión cabe destacar el desembolso de otros 3 millones para la ampliación de su fábrica de ajo pelado.

La campaña de exportación se adelantó dos semanas respecto a otros años debido a problemas de producción en otros orígenes, lo que derivó en un notable incremento de precios en el mercado libre.

Una coyuntura puntual, pero no se deben lanzar campanas al vuelo ya que “la campaña es muy larga”, recuerda Peregrín.

En 2019 la facturación total se quedará a las puertas de los 180 millones de euros, y en 2020 se podrían superar los 190. La empresa cuenta con 6.700 hectáreas de cultivo, donde la I Gama representa el 65% de las ventas, y el restante 35% se destina al procesado.

Nueva empresa post Brexit Aunque el primer mercado de Primaflor es el español, sirviendo producto las 52 semanas del año, su actividad en el Reino Unido sigue siendo importante, con un 10,3% del volumen total de ventas y un 9,4% de la facturación. Por este motivo, las dudas que plantea el Brexit sobre el que, a día de hoy, sigue habiendo numerosas incertidumbres a todos los niveles (logísticos, burocráticos…), le han hecho prepararse. “Vamos a operar con nuestra empresa Primaflor UK y estamos desarrollando otra nueva empresa”, adelanta Peregrín.

Led by the chef Rodrigo de la Calle, Michelin star and National Healthy Gastronomy Prize holder, with whom they have renewed their alliance, Primaflor has developed two mixes, full of flavour, texture and nutritional properties: their Ethnic Salads, which bring a touch of Asian and African exoticism through baby leaf of Red Pak-Choi in the first option and with Garlic Kale in the second one.

The company from Almeria is also extending its delifoods range, a segment where it is experiencing an important growth, with ‘Poké’ type options, prepared with their leafy produce and pulses (beans, chickpeas…). An option for a “complete, balanced meal, with all the nutrients that we need and that also fills you up,” Cecilio Peregrín, Corporate Director of Primaflor explains to Fruit Today.

But it doesn’t stop here, the growth of the range is accompanied by an important investment in the enlargement of its delifood processing installations and the purchase of machinery, to which it has devoted 3 million euros. If all goes according to plan, this will be ready in April 2020. Under this heading, we should also highlight the outlay of another 3 million euros for the extension of its peeled garlic factory.

The 2019/20 campaign In spite of the cold drop that affected some of Primaflor’s crop land at the beginning of the campaign with floods, such as the Almansa intermediate staging area, and Almendricos, which suffered from a hail storm, the company is carrying on with business as usual in its programmes.

The export campaign was two weeks’ early compared to other years due to production problems at other sources, which meant an appreciable rise in prices on the free market. An incidental situation, but we should not yet cry victory as “the campaign is very long,” Peregrín points out.

In 2019 the total invoicing was just under 180 million euros and in 2020, it could go over 190 million. The company has 6,700 hectares of cropland, where fresh produce represents 65% of the sales and the remaining 35% is used for processed produce.

En EE.UU., Progeny, (obtentora con 26 años de historia que copa el 33% de las ventas de iceberg en California), comercializa una “novedad mundial” que está revolucionando el mercado de la lechuga. “Somos la primera compañía en tener híbridos”, explica Pedro Alonso, director de Investigación y Desarrollo para EMEA en Progeny.

En Norteamérica ya están comercializando variedades híbridas de forma exclusiva con productores. “En EE.UU. se trabaja de forma diferente, siembra directa, trabajos más exclusivos y también se tienen genes patentados (algo que todavía no puede hacerse en Europa)”.

Desde hace cuatro años opera en España. Con mejora clásica están trabajando en dos objetivos. Por un lado, desarrollar materiales nuevos y localizar el calendario de cultivo para las variedades que se adapten a las condiciones del Mediterráneo, adaptando las más de 150 variedades que tienen en EE.UU. a las condiciones

Y otra línea de trabajo de desarrollo son las variedades híbridas, que “realmente revolucionarán el mercado de la lechuga”.

Su objetivo es convertirse en una empresa de servicios

Sobre esta última línea, Alonso explica que está “desarrollando tanto las líneas de mejora como el sistema de producción de semilla. La idea es producirla a un precio razonable que la haga sostenible”. Las ventajas que conlleva son numerosas: mayor producción (en Norteamérica obtienen como mínimo un 20-30% más de peso en las iceberg híbridas respecto a las no híbridas, y en romanas el diferencial es de hasta un 60% más de peso en las híbridas), lechugas de mayor tamaño, pared más gruesa (beneficiando a la IV Gama por su consistencia y crunch), más aguante en campo y tolerancias, y más uniformidad y precocidad. Pero sobre todo el desarrollo de la recolección mecánica, ya que el formato de los híbridos, con un pie más elevado y mayor número de hojas en la base, permite que la cabeza se dañe menos al meter maquinaria. En definitiva, ventajas que permitirán la mecanización total del proceso, de la siembra a la recolección, por la que pasa el futuro del sector.

En su centro de investigación de España, en Cuevas de Almanzora, ya tienen

híbridos en campo, principalmente de romana e Iceberg, pero también de otros tipos que están testando y muestran su potencial.

Su objetivo es convertirse en una “empresa de servicios”, tanto para productores como otras obtentoras.

The lettuce sector is undergoing a process of change worldwide. The need to minimise the chemical impact and reduce production costs as much as possible is resulting in the mechanisation of the processes and, to do this, a change in the concept of the materials is essential. In the USA, Progeny, (a plant breeder with 26 years of history with 33% of iceberg sales in California), is marketing a “worldwide new development” that is revolutionising the lettuce market. “We are the first company to have hybrids,” explains Pedro Alonso, Research and Development Manager for EMEA at Progeny. In North America, they are already marketing hybrid varieties exclusively with producers. “In the USA, they work in a different way, with direct sowing, more exclusive work and they also have patented genes (which is still not possible in Europe).”

The company has been working in Spain for four years now. Using classic improvements, they are working on two goals. On the one hand, the company is developing new materials and localising the crop calendar for the varieties that adapt to Mediterranean conditions, adapting the over 150 varieties that they have in the USA to the crop growing conditions in Spain. And another line of work involves developing the hybrid varieties, which “will really revolutionise the lettuce market.”

Regarding the latter, Alonso explains that they are “developing both the improvement lines and the seed production system. The idea is to produce seeds at a reasonable price that make them sustainable.” This brings many advantages with it: greater production (in North America, they are obtaining a minimum of between 20-30% more weight with hybrids compared to non-hybrid materials, and in Romaine lettuces the difference in weight is up to 60% in the hybrid materials), larger lettuces, with thicker leaf walls (useful for pre-prepared foods due to the consistency and crunchiness), greater endurance in the fields and more tolerances, along with greater uniformity and early harvesting. But above all, the development of mechanical harvesting is the most important development, since the format of the hybrids, with a higher stem and a larger number of leaves at the base, mean that the head is damaged less when the machinery is used. In short, advantages that will allow the total mechanisation of the process, from sowing to harvesting, which will involve the future of the sector.

At its Spanish research centre, in Cuevas de Almanzora, they already have hybrids in the fields, mainly of romaine and iceberg, but they are also testing other types that show potential. Their aim is to become a “service company” for both producers and other plant breeders.

“Faltan productos de hoja”

Cuadraspania lucha por cumplir las previsiones de cara a los clientes en un año climatológicamente complicado para el sector Cuadras prefiere no adelantar acontecimientos, “tras Navidad y primavera veremos qué pasa”. Las previsiones iniciales que se habían marcado para esta campaña incluían superar en un 10% la producción del ejercicio pasado (50 millones de piezas), y un 10% más de facturación (23 mill.€ en 2018/19) entre todas sus referencias: escarola (frisée, rizada y lisa), cogollos de Little gem y alcachofas violetas.

Corazones de alcachofa En un contexto global en el que la escarola, su producto estrella, tiende a bajar en los mercados en favor de otros productos de hoja como la Little gem (aún no es su caso, debido a la alta especialización de la empresa), Cuadraspania está apostando por una mayor especialización en sus productos claves. Actualmente desarrolla la última fase de un proyecto en colaboración con la Universidad de Murcia para producir y comercializar corazones de alcachofa Fresh Cut. “Empezaremos pronto a mandar muestras para validar el proceso y su aceptación comercial”, adelanta Cuadras.

luvias en septiembre que afectaron a la sierra y provocaron pudrición en cultivos; frío en la costa y mucho viento en noviembre que ralentizó el crecimiento de la cosecha. It is currently developing the last phase of a collaboration project with the University of Murcia to produce and market Fresh Cut artichoke hearts. “In the near future we will start sending samples to validate the process and its commercial acceptance,” Cuadras advances.

This format helps with produce preparation and is mainly aimed at young consumers and those who are not accustomed to eating this vegetable fresh, such as people from the Scandinavian and Eastern European countries. It is a ‘unique’, 100% natural product, which maintains all its nutritional and flavour qualities.

To start this new line up, the company has invested € 400,000 in the project, including the research and the start up of a pre-prepared food production line.

Buenas perspectivas para Tirreno

a casa de semillas Tozer afronta la nueva campaña con buenas previsiones comerciales para su variedad de brócoli Tirreno. El material, lanzado hace tres años, funcionó muy bien el año pasado y para este ejercicio prevén incrementar sus ventas. “Esperamos una muy buena campaña y hay disponibilidad de semillas”, explica Carmen Sánchez, responsable de Comunicación y Logística.

Este material posee doble aptitud, tanto para mercado fresco como para industria, siendo recomendable tanto para recolección de pella única como para cosechar rebrotes.

Sus pellas, abovedadas con floretes muy cortos y de pequeño tamaño, son muy compactas y pesadas. Asimismo,

desde la casa de semillas destacan la posición elevada de las pellas, de color verde intenso y sin antocianos.

En la nueva campaña (producen 12 meses, su año fiscal inicia en octubre), prevén alcanzar cifras similares a las del ejercicio pasado: entre 10-12 millones de kg de brócoli, 20 mill. de piezas de lechuga iceberg, 15 de Little gem y 10 de romana, además de otras en cantidades menores de lollo, hoja de roble, escarola y el segmento bío, con unos 50.000 kg semanales de brócoli y coliflor.

A problemas endémicos como la escasez hídrica se han sumado otros como los efectos del cambio climático (claramente visibles en los cultivos), la subida del Salario Mínimo Interprofesional (SMI) y los aún inciertos efectos del Brexit que se concretarán a finales de enero.

Un escenario nada halagüeño que hace presagiar que “al campo murciano le queda poco. Que se prepare”. Así de contundente se muestra Domingo Llamas, gerente de Hoyamar, quien reclama que “hay que dejar de jugar en política y poner en marcha acciones que nos permitan ser más competitivos”.

Túnez, Marruecos, Egipto… son solo algunos ejemplos de países productores con los que es imposible compararse si hablamos de costes de mano de obra. “Y el transporte marítimo está impulsando aún más esa competencia”, advierte Llamas.

Sobre el Brexit y sus consecuencias, habrá que esperar a ver cómo acaba todo, aunque lo que sí está claro es que con los actuales horarios de Aduanas las empresas lo tienen complicado a la hora de exportar perecederos. “Urge una regulación de horarios. Si actuamos todos a una vamos a ser capaces de acotarlo y que su efecto sea bastante limitado. Pero como siempre hay que prepararse para lo peor y esperar lo mejor.

Es tan brutal que está haciendo mucho daño. O se ponen medios o lo vamos a pasar mal. Si ya de por si la rentabilidad estaba bajo mínimos, las cotizaciones de este año y el SMI están hundiendo al sector. Hacemos inversiones bestiales en todos los conceptos, el producto agrícola no puede aguantar más. Hay que protestar al más alto nivel.

Hacerlo solo aquí no nos sirve.

Hace ya más de medio año que se sabe del potencial peligro, y habíamos avisado de la necesidad de realizar controles sobre material vegetal y semillas que entran de fuera. Nuestro laboratorio Labcolor lleva realizando analíticas desde principio de campaña para garantizar ausencia de virosis.

Principalmente la comunicación, control y vigilancia a todos nuestros agricultores y sus explotaciones, a través del departamento técnico, y una estricta profilaxis e higiene con medidas como las que se difunden desde la Junta.

La marca de Bayer llega con fuerzas renovadas y presenta varias novedades. Para invernadero, lanzan un nuevo Galia, SVMG 7420 que se llamará Albizu y es la primera variedad de Almería que se enmarca en Cyro Line, así como en la marca Almería es Sabor. Ideada para trasplantes del 20 de febrero en adelante, destaca por su precocidad, alto nivel de Brix (14 a 16 grados), su intenso color amarillo con escriturado denso a nivel externo y la potencialidad de sabor pese a ser un larga vida, detalla Héctor Ramos, responsable comercial de Melón y Sandía de Seminis.

De frutos muy rojos, duros y que no blandean en primavera, lo han convertido en referente en Almería. Y su resistencia a cuchara, spotted, Fulvia, Stemphylium y nematodos es un plus “en un año con una cantidad brutal de calabacín, lo que implica numerosos problemas de plagas como trips”, avanza García.

Su tomate suelto Bateyo es para ciclo largo, pero se recoge principalmente en primavera. A grandes rasgos se podría definir como un tipo Daniela pero con sabor, independientemente del tipo de manejo del cultivo. Y es precisamente el sabor lo que lo convierte en único dentro del segmento.

Presencia en Phytoma Los pasados 11 y 12 de diciembre, la marca De Ruiter participó en el Encuentro Internacional Phytoma “La Fitosanidad en el cultivo del tomate: de los riesgos actuales a las nuevas amenazas”, celebrado en Águilas (Murcia), donde además de desarrollar una ponencia, ejerció de patrocinador. En dicha ponencia, se remarcó la importancia de desarrollar soluciones a los retos de la agricultura actual, tales como la presencia de nematodos en nuestros suelos y la necesidad de aumentar la productividad de los cultivos.

En este sentido, se presentó La Nueva Generación de Portainjertos, cuyos máximos exponentes son Dynafort, Vitalfort y DR0141TX.

ijk Zwaan ha realizado unas jornadas de campo para promocionar su nueva variedad de tomate pera Atakama RZ en el campo de Níjar (Almería).

Un material ya bastante conocido por los agricultores por los buenos resultados que ha dado en la fase precomercial y que, ahora, da el salto a la venta masiva con muy buenas perspectivas.

Desde la casa de semillas, el responsable de Cultivo de Tomate, Manuel Hernández, ha explicado a Fruit Today que la variedad es para trasplantes desde principios de agosto y es ideal tanto para ciclos cortos como largos, ya que cuaja bien con altas temperaturas y mantiene el calibre y la forma de pera en condiciones de frío, cuando otros materiales tienden a redondearse.

Como han podido comprobar los asistentes a la jornada en campo, los puntos fuertes de Atakama RZ son la calidad de los frutos (“muy homogéneos y con calibre M durante todo el ciclo”), su buen color y nivel de Brix.

Características que se complementan con una gran poscosecha. A nivel de resistencias, cuenta con una alta resistencia a TYLCV o cuchara y spotted.

Grandes perspectivas comerciales tras un excelente feedback en la fase precomercial

Hernández recomienda ponerlo con portainjertos Emperador RZ para aportar un plus de vigor a la planta. “Permite aumentar un poco el calibre y evita parada de producción en invierno”.

From the seed company, the Tomato Crop manager, Manuel Hernández, explained to Fruit Today that the variety is for transplanting from the beginning of August and it is ideal for both short and long cycles, as it sets well in high temperatures and maintains its size and plum shape in colder conditions, when other materials tend to get rounder.

As the visitors to the field days were able to see for themselves, the strong points of Atakama RZ are the fruit quality (“highly homogeneous and with M calibre throughout the cycle”), its good colour and Brix level. Characteristics that are complemented with a great post-harvest.

Regarding resistances, it has a high resistance to TYLCV or spotted virus.

Hernández recommends using it with Emperador RZ rootstock to give added strength to the plant. “It allows the size to be increased slightly and prevents a halt to production in winter.”

n 2020 está previsto plantar 55 hectáreas entre España y Portugal, repartidas por las diferentes zonas productivas de Sevilla, Cartagena y Torres Vedras.

Es la primera vez que la variedad Amandine, de origen francés, será cultivada fuera de la frontera gala, pero según señala Francisco Moya, presidente del grupo de trabajo hispano francés y director de Negonor, “conocemos la sensibilidad, cada día más creciente, de los ciudadanos europeos por consumir productos locales 68 Fruittoday

o nacionales, tal y como los franceses llevamos haciendo mucho tiempo y es uno de los factores que nos ha impulsado a producir Amandine fuera de Francia.”

El nacimiento de la marca, ‘Princesa Amandine’, se corresponde con la conjunción de intereses por parte de cuatro comercializadoras: Ibérica de Patatas de Madrid, Zamorano de Barcelona, Udapa del País Vasco y la portuguesa Campotec. “Partimos de cero porque esta variedad de patata, que pertenece al segmento de carne firme, no existe en el

mercado español. Por ello, pretendemos ser en cinco años una variedad reconocida por los consumidores y distribuidores, con un posicionamiento de calidad, pero de uso cotidiano,” explica el presidente de Princesa Amandine Ibérica, Alfonso Saénz de Cámara de la cooperativa vasca Udapa.

Formas de consumo hipocalóricas Sáenz de Cámara, remarca que el principal objetivo de la nueva marca es “fomentar su consumo en fresco para que, en España, al igual que sucede en otros países, se coman más patatas de manera saludable, en ensaladas, hervidas, cocidas o como guarniciones. Por ello hemos realizado un

gran esfuerzo en adaptar la imagen de Princesa Amandine al mercado ibérico y pondremos en marcha una gran campaña de comunicación y marketing. Este plan incluirá apariciones en las televisiones regionales, medios especializados y acciones en el punto de venta”.

Por su parte, la asociación española también asume el suministro de patata nueva española a sus partners franceses en los meses en que ellos no tengan producción.

En Francia, Princesa Amandine lleva más de una década de éxitos en los principales supermercados. En España, acaba de llegar a los lineales de Alcampo y de Lidl, aunque en breve llegará a otras insignias de la distribución. Para la celebración de su lanzamiento, Alcampo ha puesto en marcha una promoción por la que la marca devuelve su importe a los primeros consumidores que efectúen la compra.

From Pom’Alliance (the French company that is granting the brand for the Iberian market), the executive Guy de Foucaud states that “the French association will be keeping a very watchful eye on the brand development, as well as the production in Spain and Portugal. The birth of the brand, ‘Princesa Amandine’, corresponds to the combination of interests by four marketers: Ibérica de Patatas in Madrid, Zamorano in Barcelona, Udapa in the Basque Country and the Portuguese company, Campotec. “We are starting from scratch because this potato variety, which belongs to the firm flesh segment, does not exist on the Spanish market.

Therefore, our idea is to become a variety recognised by consumers and distributors in five years, with a positioning that includes quality produce, but for everyday use,” explains the chairman of Princesa Amandine Ibérica, Alfonso Saénz de Cámara, from the Basque Cooperative Udapa.

In France, Princesa Amandine has been successful for over a decade in the main supermarkets. In Spain, it has just arrived on the shelves of Alcampo and Lidl, although it will reach other distribution supermarkets very shortly.

To celebrate its launch, Alcampo has started up a promotion where the brand refunds the purchase price to the first consumers buying the product.

In Spain, within the fruit and vegetable sector, the potato has historically been considered as a commodity. Many companies, along with countries in central Europe, have fought to revalue and promote their brands, but at present few have managed it. Although it is true that in recent years some of them have been making a significant effort in terms of added value and they are passing this on to the sector through important media marketing campaigns.

In 2018, the potato market moved 1,108 million euros, but it suffered from a 1% slowdown in household consumption. Its price increase (+5.1%), however caused a growth in value of around 4%.

Reactiva is teaming up with Zerya They have recently signed an agreement to be the quality brand’s partner laboratory In September, Reactiva became the new partner laboratory for Zerya, the quality brand in pesticide residue-free farming production systems. El hombre que susurraba a los caballos

A Vicente Puchol (50 años, Foios, Valencia) le cuesta mucho sonreír, sin embargo, es un hombre elocuente, explicativo, un volcán de palabras. Lo había conocido previamente en una conferencia y su saber científico no me defraudó.

En el corral de su casa siempre hubo capote, muleta y pitones con los que jugar. Su padre, además de campos, tenía reses para engorde y ejemplares equinos. El Soro es como un hermano para él. De hecho, las pertenencias del ‘maestro’ están expuestas en una de las casas de la familia de Vicente, a modo de museo.

Nuestro encuentro transcurrió entre esa casa y un centro ecuestre en la Sierra Calderona, donde montó a un caballo alemán de deporte.

Vive en el campo, sin televisión y representa la sexta generación de una saga de agricultores valencianos. Quizá por ello, colecciona utensilios agrícolas en desuso y posee varios coches de caballos y tartanas del siglo XIX.

Como tiene en casa las monteras de El Soro, ¿se las ha puesto alguna vez para verse en el espejo?

Ni se me ocurriría. La montera es sagrada y sería ocupar un lugar que no me corresponde. Solo se la puede poner el maestro. ¿Puede entender que hay gente a la que no nos gustan los toros?

Por supuesto y lo respeto, pero yo tengo mi teoría. A quién no le gustan los toros no le gusta España. No tiene nada más que mirar el ejemplo catalán: la abolición de las corridas de toros significa romper el vínculo con todo lo que represente a España.

Vaya, yo no habría llevado la cosa tan lejos. ¿No cree que habría que pensar en el sufrimiento del animal mientras se ensañan con él y le hacen sangre hasta que le hincan el estoque?

El toro de lidia es un animal bravo, genéticamente ha sido criado para embestir y a partir de los cuatro años en el campo, se matan unos a otros por la jerarquía en la manada. Su crianza, en las grandes dehesas, proporciona al ganadero unos ingresos que le permiten podar encinas, eliminar lentisco, preservar el medio ambiente y evitar el cambio climático.

viví como algo muy natural desde pequeño. En mi pueblo existe mucho arraigo a la fiesta, no sólo a los toros de lidia, sino a los toros de calle. En la Comunidad Valenciana hay casi 10.000 festejos al año y sólo en Foios tenemos cuatro toreros: Vicente Ruíz ‘El Soro’, su hermano Antonio, Rafael de Foios y Raúl Martí. ¿Ha sufrido algún susto?

Sí, más de uno. En una finca de Don Álvaro Domecq en Cádiz, hicimos la recuperación de unos pastos y un fin de semana, que yo me encontraba en Sevilla, decidí aprovechar el viaje. Era sábado por la tarde y para no molestar a la familia, aparqué el coche en la carretera, abrí una portera y fui caminando hasta llegar a un sembrado de trigo.

Descubrí que entre el sembrado y el cercado había una valla y de repente empecé a escuchar un sonido que se aceleraba por momentos, me giré y vi como venían hacia mí unos 50 o 60 animales. Me eché al suelo entre el trigo y fui reptando hacia la carrilada que había dejado un tractor. Allí permanecí varias horas inmóvil, con la tablet y el teléfono apagados. Cuando empezó a caer la noche vi como unos lomos se iban desplazando por el cerro que tenía enfrente. Entonces supe que los animales volvían a su lugar para dormir y yo pude salir. ¿Qué toros tienen para usted mejor trapío hoy en día y por qué torero siente debilidad?

“El caballo es un animal muy sencillo si te armonizas con él”

torero de todos los tiempos ha sido El Soro por su creatividad y carisma, aunque el padre del toreo actual es Juan Belmonte. Él encontró la distancia óptima entre la muleta y el toro para darle al animal el ritmo adecuado, su cadencia. Fue el generador de esa plasticidad estética que tiene el arte del toreo actual.

Y del toro al caballo, por lo visto sólo hay un trecho. ¿Por eso también le gustan los caballos?

Para manejar al toro en el campo necesitas la ayuda de un caballo sino, es imposible conducir la manada. Fue la gente del pueblo la que decidió torearlos a pie.

Supongo, que al igual que me sucedió con los toros, el ambiente familiar influyó mucho en mi afición por el mundo ecuestre.

Además, el caballo es un animal muy sencillo si te armonizas con él. No puedes pedirle nada sin avisarle, pero tiene una gran memoria. ¿Tiene caballos en propiedad?

Tengo una hembra que compré en Francia.

Es una mula de deporte, hija de un silla francés. Pese a ser mular, tiene una gran actitud deportiva por la genética de su madre, un caballo de deporte puro y, cuando la monto, posee muchas funcionalidades.

Me gustaría tener dos animales como míni-

mo, pero hay meses que estoy fuera de casa cuatro semanas, y me tienen que cuidar los animales.

¿Come usted carne de caballo?

Sí, lo cortés no quita lo valiente. Y también como toro. ¿Y no pensó en hacerse veterinario en lugar de dedicarse a la fitopatología?

No, en ningún momento. A mí lo que me gusta es el entendimiento de los procesos fisiológicos de las plantas y averiguar el origen de la causa cuando hay alteraciones en la conducta vegetal.

Me han dicho que tiene una memoria prodigiosa y que recuerda los naranjos de un campo como yo puedo recordar una cara.

Sí, es verdad. Reconozco a los árboles en una parcela, me acuerdo de su desarrollo y actitud fisiológica.

A eso le llamo yo pasión por el trabajo.

Soy absolutamente feliz trabajando, por eso hago jornadas de 16 horas y no me entero.

Con esos horarios, habrá días en que solo tendrá tiempo para trabajar y dormir.

No se crea, siempre encuentro un rato para leer y aprender sobre lo que me interesa.

Vicente Puchol

The horse whisperer Vicente Puchol (50 years old, Foios, Valencia) finds it very difficult to smile; however, he is an eloquent, enlightening man, a volcano of words. I had met him before at a conference and his scientific knowledge did not let me down.

In the farmyard around his house there was always bullfighting paraphernalia to play with. His father, in addition to cropland, had beef cows, along with horses. The bullfighter ‘El Soro’ is like a brother to him. In fact, the ‘maestro’s’ belonging are on display in one of the houses belonging to Vicente’s family, as a sort of museum.

Our meeting took place between this house and an equestrian centre in the Sierra Calderona, where he rode a German sport horse.

He lives in the country, without a television and he represents the sixth generation of a Valencian farming family.

Perhaps for this reason, he collects old farming utensils and he has several horse-drawn carriages and gigs from the 19th century.

You have El Soro’s bullfighting hat at home, have you ever tried it on and looked in a mirror?

It wouldn’t occur to me. The bullfighting hat is sacred and it would mean taking on a place that is not mine. Only the maestro can wear it.

Can you understand that there are people who don’t like bullfighting?

Of course, and I respect their ideas, but I have my own theory. People who don’t like bullfighting, don’t like Spain. You only have to look at the Catalan example: the prohibition of bullfights meant breaking the link with everything that represents Spain.

Wow, I wouldn’t have taken it that far. Don’t you think that people should think about the animal’s suffering while they torment it and make it bleed until it is stabbed with the bullfighter’s sword?

Fighting bulls are fierce animals, genetically bred to charge and from four years’ old in the fields they kill each other to gain the hierarchy of the herd. Their breeding, on the large open fields, gives farmers the income to be able to prune their Holm oaks, remove mastic trees, conserve the environment and prevent climate change.

Joaquín Vidal, one of the best bullfighting critics, maintained that the bulls that fell in the bullring had been genetically manipulated. What is your opinion on this point?

Livestock farmers look for the best crosses and I wouldn’t call this genetic manipulation; at the most it could be consanguinity.

Where do you get your passion for the world of bullfighting and for horses?

My father was a great fan, so I experienced it as something very natural from a very young age.

My village is deeply-rooted in the local festivals, not just bullfighting, but also bull running. In the Valencian Community there are almost 10,000 bullfighting events a year and just in Foios alone we have four bullfighters: Vicente Ruíz ‘El Soro’, his brother Antonio, Rafael de Foios and Raúl Martí.

Have you had any frights?

Yes, more than one. On a farm belonging to Álvaro Domecq in Cadiz, we recovered some pastureland and one weekend, when I was in Seville, I decided to take advantage of the trip. It was a Saturday afternoon and, so as not to disturb the family, I parked the car on the side of the road, I opened a gate and walked over to a wheat field. I discovered that between the crop and the fence there was a barrier and suddenly I started to hear a sound that got faster by the minute; I turned round and saw around 50 to 60 animals racing towards me. I lay down in the wheat and crawled towards a track made by a tractor. I stayed there for several hours

without moving, with my tablet and my telephone turned off. When it started to get dark I saw the backs of the animals start moving towards the hill opposite me. I realised that the animals were going back to their sleeping place and I could leave.

are months when I am not at home for almost four weeks and someone has to look after the animals for me.

Which bulls do you think are the best today and who is your favourite bullfighter?

Yes, courtesy and valour are not mutually exclusive.

And I also eat bull meat.

At present I like the bulls from the Torrestrella breeding farm, and as a working bullfighter, Paco Ureña. But for me, the best bullfighter of all times was El Soro, due to his creativity and charisma, although the father of today’s bullfighting is Juan Belmonte. He found the optimum distance between the bullfighting cape and the bull to give the animal the right rhythm and pace. He was the generator of the art of bullfighting’s aesthetic plasticity.

And did you not think of becoming a vet instead of devoting your life to plant pathology?

And from bulls to horses, it would seem there is only a short step. Is this why you like horses?

In order to handle a bull in the fields, you need the help of a horse. If not, it is impossible to lead the herd. It was the village people who decided to fight bulls on foot.

I suppose, as with bullfighting, the family environment had an important influence on my love of the equestrian world.

Also, horses are very simple animals if you manage to get into step with them. You can’t ask horses to do anything without warning them first, but they have very long memories.

Do you eat horse meat?

No, never. I love understanding the physiological processes of the plants and finding out the reason behind the cause when there are alterations in the vegetable behaviour.

I´ve been told that you have an incredible memory and that you remember the oranges in a field in the same way that I can remember a face.

Yes, it’s true. I recognise the trees on a plot of land; I remember their development and their physiological attitude.

I call this passion for your work.

I am completely happy working, which is why I work for 16 hours a day and I don’t even notice.

With these working hours, there must be days when you only have time for working and sleeping.

No, believe it or not I always find a while to read and learn about things that interest me.

Do you own any horses?

I have a mare that I bought in France. She is a sport mule, the daughter of a French riding horse. In spite of being a mule, she has a great sporting attitude due to her mother’s genetics, who was a purebred sport horse and when I ride her, she has many different capabilities.
