I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labelled us to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and we should be given every opportunity. Nothing is more important as taking up space and cementing yourself.” (Zozibini Tunzi, 2019)

The world is seeing a clearer picture of women taking up space since the start of formal initiative of empowering women from the mid 80’s to early 90’s. These efforts are rapidly crossing borders to reach every corner of the world bringing the ideologies of the modern universe, a space- loving universe. According to known feminists, the fight towards womanhood is still a tough fight up to date. They claim that the process of empowerment can usefully be captured in the metaphor of a journey travelled along pathways, one on which women can travel alone or in the company of others, through terrain that may be pitted with thorny thickets, fast-flowing rivers, mud and marshes, and along paths that can double-back on themselves, meander on winding side-routes and lead to dead-ends, as well as opening up new vistas, expanding horizons and extending possibilities. Looking into how equality for women is captured, we have to admit that we need more efforts to clear their paths and secure their safety voyage. If in this picture we see a safer travel for women when they are alone, why give them a company that would just put them at risk? Creating a safe space for women in this modern time is a risk. Yet, this risk is worthy since we are creating a more acceptable and a more welcoming society for them. Look, let us try to put Juana into the shoes of Juan to see it clearer. She will go out freely every day, drink beer, go out with boys and dress like Beyonce. She will go home late at night, be more welcoming to people and be as free as him. Would you look at her as decent one? Well, do you agree if I say, that is really the problem? Decency. We cannot separate this from our longlived Filipino culture, a culture that already established the standards on how we should look at women. A culture that limited women long ago in discovering their fullest potential. This is the culture that developed men to be more free-spirited that women, to be more authoritative that women and to be more powerful that women. This is the same culture that made women courageous enough to come out from the cage they were once captives. While we give women the desk for CEO, a seat in government, a position in sports and in other fields, we should also not to forget giving them an open mind. The

struggle here is not really in the outside world. The real struggle is really within these women caged from the dictates of culture, chained by the rules of religion, confined by the limitations of human thinking. Let us not allow ourselves to live within the dictates of history. Instead, let us live by the lessons of these events. Gabriela Silang did not go to war to fight for liberation because she wanted to prove her worth as a woman but because she believes that this is the right thing to do. Miriam Defensor Santiago did not become famous because she is a woman but because she did her job well as a senator of the Republic. Apo Wang-od did not become a national artist because she is a woman but because she is excellent in her field of art. These women are like men and they need eyes that will look at them as human beings, capable of doing what they believe is right for them and for the greater population. This is a journey. Our life is a journey. The journey of women towards living a life is tougher than that of a man since they battle within themselves by proving their worth to the society they live. If we wish to accompany them, we should leave our baggage of negative thinking, judgmental intuition and our limited concept of equality. These traits will just burden us in understanding their world and the possibility of ruining their voyage. It is never too late to remove the label we placed for women. We all are stepping at the same space in the surface of the earth- even if we are trekking different paths. At the end of the day, we all have the same goal, to live a life the way we wanted it to be.

2022 National Women’s Month Celebration The Rotary Club of Narvacan is enjoined to pursue the common vision of inspiring and empowering women and girls to be agents of change and contribute to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of all women. The annual celebration of the Women’s Month is from March 1 to 31 and subsequently served as a venue to feature women’s achievements and discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments. The recurring theme “We Make Change Work for Women” will focus on the sub-theme “Agenda ng Kababaihan, Tungo sa Kaunlaran” which will be a celebration of women exercising their choices, taking chances to make their voices heard, and benefitting from and trailblazing changes. It is a celebration of Filipino women’s power to take the narrative, raise priority issues that matter to them, and call for concrete actions.
