"Women, with their courage and determination, have played a vital role in shaping the history of Rotary by actively serving their communities and taking on leadership roles The landmark decision made by the Council on Legislation in 1989 to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide stands as a pivotal moment in our organizational journey and is a testament to their unwavering commitment
In a speech to fellow delegates, Frank J Devlyn, a visionary leader who would later become RI president in 2000-01, emphasized the need for Rotary to adapt to a changing world, stating, “The world of 1989 is very different from that of 1905 I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world ” His advocacy for change in Rotary highlights the necessity of adaptation and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
The decision to admit women into Rotary clubs was the result of a global effort, demonstrating the unity and collaboration of men and women from all corners of the Rotary world advocating for this change It followed several close votes at previous Council meetings, marking a significant step towards diversity and inclusion.
The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had surged to over 20,000 The number of women members worldwide reached 195,000 in July 2010 (approximately 16% of Rotarians), and surpassed 277,000 in July 2020 (approximately 23%) This remarkable growth is a testament to the acceptance and expansion of diversity in Rotary
One of Rotary's top priorities is to grow and diversify its membership to ensure that it reflects the communities it serves Recognizing that our ability to increase our impact and expand our reach is greater when more people unite with us, we place value on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rotary celebrates and welcomes the contributions of people from all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity
Our timeline showcases historical milestones and the firsts in senior leadership that have contributed to building greater diversity in Rotary. These leaders, along with all our female members, are making positive changes in communities worldwide "
