I would lie if I say that 2021 is a perfect year for me because it is just like the other previous years in so many ways. 2021 was a year of trauma for many and a year of happiness for some—so with 2020, 2019, 2018 and so on. Every year, there are a lot of incidents to add in the annals of our own history. And just like the previous years, highlights are the best ones to remember. The first months of the year still covered us with COVID 19 fear but vaccination ran so fast that made us somehow feel more protected from the dreaded virus. Although we are already accustomed to staying and working at home, the itch of going out and spending a splendid day under the sun still bothered us. Prayers and extra caution have been done by many of us to finally see an end to this pandemic. However, the threat of COVID 19 still haunted us that year even up to the present. But on the last months of 2021, particularly in Ilocos Sur, we were given a chance to enjoy once again our freedom—although we still follow strict protocols—because of the rapid drop of positive cases in our province. Some considered this a blessing and

some considered it as warning for a more serious problem which is yet to arrive. Those times, all of us were like dogs freed from the cage—which is understandable because of the long captive-like times. Malls reopened, kids’ park resuscitate, food courts revived, church activities resumed, gatherings carried on, and the like. The feeling of seeing so much people became so unfamiliar to me— it felt like being drowned in the sea of laughing people. New normal sunk in my veins and getting dragged to old normal was a lot to process. It even felt wrong watching people avoiding contact with each other and no face was recognizable because of the double masks. At first, I honestly felt uncomfortable— but realizing the thirst of this people to socialize and once again do what they used to do, I paused and started appreciating that short while and focused on its brighter side-- holidays were so much enjoyed because of the short-time freedom we had. Everyone ended the year so happy but the question is, did it cause a long-term positive impact? Answers may vary but by now, I know that you are already ready with answers followed by justification.

Vision& Devotion M

y service and leadership have not only given me experiences I will cherish for a long time but has also enabled me to become an advocate for others and to promote issues that are of importance. In my school my leadership has helped bridge gaps between people. One example of how I accomplish this is with to listen and establish understanding among them. As a result, my peers consider our school to be more inclusive of them and our student body more accepting of diversity. I am always guided by my rotary principle. These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life. FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan. Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct. Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of

life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in Action: A Guide to Effective Projects. International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more. Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange. Rotary clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique concerns and needs. Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects. The most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of the following seven areas of focus. Peace and conflict prevention/resolution Disease prevention and treatment Water and sanitation Maternal and child health Basic education and literacy Economic and community development Environment Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation recognize these seven areas of focus as organizational priorities, and there are countless ways that Rotarians can address these needs locally and international. For the first six months of our Rotary service, we were able to accomplish these projects in service to our community.
