How A1 Fence Solved a Dual-Gate Challenge with Discreet Automation

In the heat and hustle of Las Vegas, gated homes are more than a luxury—they’re a necessity for privacy, safety, and peace of mind. But when a local homeowner approached A1 Fence with a unique access challenge, the solution required more than standard equipment.

The homeowner’s property featured two large gates—one for entry, one for exit—but the two couldn’t be operated simultaneously. This created not only confusion but potential safety concerns, especially when multiple vehicles were involved. The homeowner needed a solution that wouldn’t compromise on security but also wouldn’t disrupt the aesthetic of their wrought iron and stone entrance.

Enter A1 Fence, a Trusted Installer with a Reputation for Craftsmanship

Based in Las Vegas, A1 Fence has earned its name by pairing thoughtful design with reliable technology. For this project, Amy Jones, estimator, business development, explored several solutions before landing on one that fit the homeowner’s needs precisely: the Nice Juno Slide Gate Operator.

“I was impressed by how compact and intelligent the system was,” says Jones. “It offered the kind of seamless integration we look for— something that works hard but doesn’t call attention to itself.”

From Demonstration to Deployment

The final system design included the Nice Juno operator, a Security Brands 14-500T Wireless Keypad for secure access, and an AES Global E-Loop for automatic exit detection. Lead installer Zachary Thompson ensured each component was integrated cleanly into the property's existing layout without compromising aesthetics or performance.

What truly set this system apart, however, was the Juno’s built-in indicator light. This gave the homeowner instant, visual feedback on gate status, a subtle feature that made a big difference in usability and peace of mind.

A Seamless Experience with Tangible Results

“Before the install, the homeowner had to guess which gate was open or risk one not operating properly. Now, everything is intuitive,” says Thompson. “They can see the status at a glance, which reduces confusion and increases safety.”

The results speak for themselves: a secure, visually discreet system that delivers daily convenience and confidence. No more secondguessing. No more gate delays.

The Bigger Picture

While much of the buzz in home technology focuses on the interior of the home, solutions like the Juno gate operator reflect a growing demand for thoughtful, intuitive systems at the perimeter. In a category crowded with basic open and close functions, Juno stands out by delivering more –with unique features designed to make access more convenient, secure, and aligned with the needs of modern homeowners.

“This is a great example of how intelligent access solutions can quietly enhance daily living,” says Lisa Steinberg, senior product manager at Nice North America. “Juno goes beyond the basics, offering homeowners a dependable and intuitive experience that brings greater peace of mind to everyday routines."

Standout Features & Benefits: The Nice Juno immediately impressed A1 Fence with its innovative design and powerful capabilities. Key features that stood out include:

• Sleek, Compact Design: The Juno's small footprint was a significant advantage, offering a more aesthetically pleasing and less intrusive presence compared to larger operators.

• Integrated Driveway Light & Status

Indicator: Crucial for the double drive U-shaped driveway, these features provided

enhanced visibility and clear communication to the homeowner regarding the gate's status. This was a critical problem-solver for the homeowner, as the presence of two gates (entry and exit) that could not be opened concurrently meant that knowing the exact status of each gate was paramount for safe and efficient operation. The lights provided immediate visual cues, acting as essential safety indicators that prevented confusion and ensured secure gate usage.

• User-Friendly Control Board: The intuitive and easy program Mercury 310 control board streamlined the installation process.

• Robust Performance: Despite its compact size, the Juno's impressive size 40 sprocket and chain drive system demonstrated its ability to handle significant loads, ensuring reliable and durable operation.

Fall Roundup of Fencing

Trends

for Sports

Facilities

As the sun sets on the summer travel tournament season and rises on the school year, athletic directors, sports park personnel and club managers are gearing up. That means new players are moving into facilities, bringing their unique interests and requests.

According to members of the American Sports Builders Association, the organization for those in the sports facility design, construction and supply industry, a number of resulting trends are impacting sports fencing:

Fence Posts Pulling Double Duty

“One of the leading trends for outdoor facilities is the implementation of linear fence-mounted LED lighting systems,” notes Nick Schultz of Fast-Dry Courts and Tweener Lighting Systems.

Such fixtures, which are making entry into the tennis market, as well as the explosively growing pickleball sector, are also very popular in court kits for the growing sport of padel.

The integration of fence posts and lighting poles is an emerging technology that is expected to gain traction; however, it may not be an ideal approach for every installation. A consultation with a sports-specific contractor should be arranged.

Pickleball-Driven Changes in Court Fence Design

Randy Futty of Putterman Athletics says court contractors are seeing a seismic shift in fencing configurations on pickleball courts. “We’re seeing changes in the design of pickleball fences with openings at the net line or dedicated latchclosed gates in the corners. A few years ago, the standard was to leave the back corners open as entry points onto courts; however, this design let balls stray too easily and did not promote the social

interaction and court-to-court partner changes that pickleball players want.”

Aesthetic Choices

Chain link has long been a popular choice; however, suppliers say customers are also eyeing the use of netting to enclose sports facilities. Furthermore, they are seeing a trend toward a more open, airy look.

“Architects are frequently requesting designs that feature longer netting spans with minimal poles, aiming for a more open aesthetic,” says Benji Brye of Beacon Athletics. “This shift requires adaptations in both design and installation to meet these specific requirements.”

From the ballfield to the backcourt, the right fencing, netting and windscreen can make all the difference the experience for both players and spectators. In this special section, we explore the latest innovations that keep athletes safe, improve game-day visibility, protect spectators, promote brands and enhance facility aesthetics with winning results.

New Product Choices

The industry is constantly evolving to meet customer demands for convenience and safety, according to Ken Robinson of Sports Venue Padding, Inc. Robinson cites examples like “engineered sliding gate pads, automatic wedge gate padding and hinged gate padding for athletic field access doors and outfield gates.”

Other manufacturers say customers are requesting padded railings in front of areas like dugouts that include amenities like cup holders and charging ports for phones.

New Trends in Windscreen on Court Fencing

Windscreen on fencing isn’t new but it, too, is impacted by consumer demand, according to Jon Ball of Ball Fabrics. “Customers are seeking windscreen products that are easy to maintain, meaning less frequent cable tie replacements and minimal removal or reinstallation. They're also looking for solutions that can withstand strong winds without damaging the fence. Windscreens are also being used for branding, with logos, mascots and custom colors.”

A negative trend noted by many in the industry was the concern that fencing and netting are frequently cut from the budget when overruns occur. In reality, professionals point out, the safety feature alone should keep fencing as a line item.

Unlimited Sports Solutions Helps Fence Contractors THINK OUTSIDE THE FENCE

In today’s construction market, diversification and added value are key to standing out. For fence contractors, one highly effective way to expand service offerings and meet growing client needs is by installing netting systems. These systems, which include sports netting, bird control netting, debris containment netting and safety nets, serve a wide variety of applications across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. By offering netting installation, fence contractors can not only increase revenue but also become a more comprehensive and in-demand solution provider.

According to Ron Dubas, president of Unlimited Sports Solutions (USS), “First and foremost, netting systems naturally complement traditional fencing. Where fences provide physical boundaries and security, netting can extend these functions vertically or across open spaces.” For example, he says in sports facilities such as baseball fields or golf courses, netting prevents balls from leaving the play area, protecting nearby people and property. In residential settings, backyard netting can help keep animals out of gardens or ensure that pets stay safely contained. For commercial clients, bird control netting helps keep rooftops, signage, and parking structures free from pest damage and droppings— critical for aesthetics, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Dubas says another strong reason fence contractors should offer netting installation is the demand for safety and liability mitigation. Construction sites often require debris containment netting to protect workers and pedestrians from falling materials. Industrial facilities may need safety nets installed in

elevated work areas to comply with OSHA standards. These jobs are natural extensions

of fence contractors’ skills—digging, post-setting, tensioning, and structural reinforcement—and only require minimal additional training or equipment. “By entering the netting market, fence contractors position themselves as partners in risk management, a compelling value proposition for business and municipal clients alike,” adds Dubas.

From a business perspective, he says adding netting systems to your service menu can significantly boost profits. Netting installation typically commands a higher margin than standard fencing due to its specialized nature and customization requirements. Jobs are often quicker to complete and require fewer materials, while still allowing contractors to charge premium pricing due to the expertise involved. Furthermore, the range of netting applications—from aviaries and refuse sites to stadiums and backyards—means consistent work across many industries, even outside of typical fencing seasons.

Ultimately, Dubas says embracing netting systems allows fence contractors to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. As property owners seek integrated perimeter and safety solutions, contractors who can address multiple needs with a single bid will win more jobs. Offering netting demonstrates innovation, professionalism, and a willingness to adapt to clients' evolving demands. It’s also a gateway to long-term maintenance contracts, as many netting systems require periodic inspection and repair, creating opportunities for recurring revenue.

“Netting systems are a natural and profitable addition to any fence contractor’s service offerings,” says Dubas. “With minimal investment and training, contractors can expand into a booming niche that complements their existing skills.”

USS is a leading supplier of athletic facility equipment and products for constructing safe complexes of all sizes.

Four years from now, Los Angeles, California, will host the 2028 Summer Olympics. The softball tournament venue will be a threehour plane ride away in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at Devon Park. Devon Park is a

world class softball complex that includes a 13,000-seat professional softball stadium, the USA National Softball Hall of Fame, four softball-specific fields, and the headquarters for USA Softball. The stadium not only hosts the annual Women’s College World Softball Series, it is now home of the Oklahoma City Spark, a member of the newly formed, professional women’s softball league.

When it was decided that a more consistent and professional look was required along the outfield fencing at the stadium, COVERMASTER® was contacted to get the job done. Since branding was the most important requirement for wind screening along the outfield perimeter, a specialized custom windscreen with high end graphic ability was recommended. It would provide maximum visual impact with full-color capability and highdefinition clarity. It also had proven performance and effect with other similar requests by COVERMASTER® customers.

Over 4,000 square feet of this branded COVERMASTER® windscreen was ordered for the stadium at Devon Park. It was digitally printed and personalized with fully branded graphics of the Oklahoma and the Softball USA names and logos on a striking blue background. Once installed, the outfield perimeter of the softball stadium provided a unique and colorful frame to this elite softball venue and enhanced the overall professionalism and look of Devon Park.

2,000 LINEAR FEET OF CUSTOM RAILING

CHANGE THE GAME at Homefield KC

Homefield KC in Kansas City, Kansas, is a multipurpose venue designed to host national events in a cutting-edge space that prioritizes both functionality and style. Sightline Commercial Solutions was tapped to contribute a wide range of custom-engineered railing systems, totaling just under 2,000 linear feet. Utilizing 3D laser scanning, Sightline was able to capture precise dimensions of the entire building and create a model that allowed for swift completion of the many custom profiles, including picket rail, drink rail, aisle rail, separation rail and cane detection rail. Each railing style was finished in a sleek, black anodized aluminum, giving the facility a contemporary and uniform aesthetic.

Sightline partnered closely with several collaborators to bring this facility to life. In tandem with Cardinal Glass, they incorporated the glass infill panels across seating areas, ensuring both safety and clear visibility throughout the venue’s expansive court areas. In addition, the team also coordinated installation of railing with 9/16” glass infill with a PVB interlayer along the front of the spectator bowl. Face mounting of the railing onto steel frames required careful alignment with the infill panels but, due to the combined

experience of the Cardinal and Sightline team, the project was finished on time and on budget.

Sightline also worked with Turner Construction to engineer drink rails that have the same countertop surfaces used throughout other areas in the building. The courts, which allow up to 12 simultaneous volleyball games or ten simultaneous basketball games, are equipped with seating provided by Camatic Seating and Dreamseat, providing an optimized tournament viewing experience for spectators.

Choose Netting for Non-Traditional Sports: ARCHERY, LACROSSE AND MORE

When it comes to sports like archery, lacrosse, and golf, choosing the right netting makes all the difference. According to Tom Hildebrandt, owner of All Sport Netting, unlike traditional sports, these activities require specialized netting that can handle high-speed impacts safely and effectively.

All Sport Netting has crafted custom netting solutions for protection and performance for 20 years. Hildebrandt says their team understands that customized netting solutions are essential to meet the unique demands of these sports. He provides expert advice on factors to consider when choosing the best netting for non-traditional sports:

Why Specialized Netting Matters

In non-traditional sports, balls, arrows, and other projectiles often travel at high speeds and require more containment than standard nets can handle. This makes safety a priority for any facility offering these sports. Without the right sports netting, facilities risk not only safety concerns but also higher replacement costs. Investing in high-quality custom netting ensures a long-lasting solution that works for both the players and the facility.

Impact Resistance and Material Durability

For sports like archery and golf, the netting material must be strong enough to absorb powerful impacts. Arrows, lacrosse balls, and golf balls can cause quick damage to standard netting, which is why facilities need nets made of durable materials.

The All Sport Netting is customized to handle the specific needs of each sport, providing safety and reducing the cost of frequent replacements. By choosing netting materials that are designed for durability, facilities can ensure long-lasting, reliable performance in high-impact sports.

Correct Thickness and Mesh Size

Different sports require different netting thickness and mesh sizes. For instance, archery needs a tightly woven net to stop high-speed arrows, while lacrosse may require a slightly wider mesh.

With customized options, you can get the exact mesh size and thickness needed for a specific sport, which keeps the netting effective and minimizes wear. Choosing the right fit extends the life of the netting, helping avoid unnecessary replacements.

Weather and UV Resistance

Weather resistance is critical for any outdoor facility. Sun exposure, rain, and wind can degrade standard nets quickly, leaving them vulnerable to damage.

All Sport Netting’s weatherproof netting helps facilities reduce maintenance time and costs, ensuring nets stay strong and safe season after season. For facilities that rely on outdoor setups, UV- and weather-resistant materials are essential for long-term performance.

Custom Fit for Unique Sports Layouts

Every facility has unique needs, and non-traditional sports setups often require netting with a specific layout. Standard netting may not work in these cases. From large archery ranges to smaller lacrosse areas, All Spot Netting customizes nets that provide complete coverage and fit exact requirements.

Netting from All Sport Netting is built to withstand impact, resist the elements and provide a perfect fit. Learn more at allsportnetting.com.

SMART, SAFE AND CUSTOM: What to Know About Sports Safety Netting

Sports safety netting is an essential part of indoor and outdoor facilities. It protects spectators, defines boundaries, and adds flexibility without disrupting play. InCord specializes in custom sports netting solutions that fit the needs of each space, whether it’s a school gym, training facility, or multipurpose sports complex.

“People often think of netting as a simple add-on, but it’s really a core part of the facility design. It’s about protection, but also important for

Spectator Protection

• Baseball and softball netting around fields and bleachers

• Indoor soccer arena barriers that do not impact views

• Multi-sport complexes utilize retractable and static netting for versatility

“As an added bonus, netting keeps the game flowing by minimizing stoppage and distractions,” Cunningham adds.

Ball

Containment & Court Safety

She says fast-paced sports need boundaries to stay safe and efficient. Containment netting keeps equipment on the court and protects surrounding areas. It’s great for:

• Volleyball and basketball courts

• Tennis enclosures and pickleball courts

• Indoor lacrosse or soccer nets for goals and scoreboard protection.

performance and flow," says Meghan Cunningham, InCord sports safety netting sales manager. “Netting helps define play zones, separate activities, and shield spectators and equipment from stray balls or gear. It’s used in everything from batting cages and basketball courts to indoor soccer and volleyball arenas.” Cunningham shares some additional insights on the safety benefits of sports netting:

Divider Nets for Multi-Zone Flexibility

If a facility needs to run multiple games or practices at once, Cunningham says divider nets can quickly turn one space into many. These are ideal for:

• Sports arenas

• Field houses

• Multi-court gyms

• Indoor training facilities

InCord also provides new and replacement nets for retractable systems, allowing for dynamic use of space.

Batting Cage Nets & Pitching Tunnels

Creating controlled practice environments for baseball and softball is made simple with overhead and side netting specifically designed for:

• Indoor and outdoor batting cage nets

• Baseball/softball pitching tunnels

• Multi-lane layouts for teams

Equipment & Fixture Protection

Protect lighting, scoreboards, fans, and HVAC systems with precision sports netting. Cunningham says this saves money and extends the life of facility investments.

• Ceiling-mounted barrier nets

• Wall protection

• Equipment backstops

Portable & Temporary Netting

When flexibility is needed, Cunningham says InCord’s netting can be installed on portable frames or temporary posts, making it ideal for:

• Seasonal events

• Pop-up practices

• Rental or shared-use spaces

Goal & Backstop Netting

Netting behind goals and shooting areas will help prevent player and spectator injuries, as well as game delays at:

• Soccer fields

• Hockey arenas

• Lacrosse fields

Netting for Coaching & Safety Drills

Cunningham says netting provides a safe, effective solution to isolate drills, contain rebound areas, or create visual boundaries in practice. Use it to:

• Guide players

• Create skill zones

• Build confidence

Cunningham says many customers come in unsure of what they need. “That’s not a problem. We connect them with our trusted distributor partners who guide them through every step, making sure the solution fits their space, purpose, and budget,” she explains. “From initial layout to final install, InCord helps ensure your netting works and keeps working. That means choosing the right mesh size, cord gauge, and support systems with safety in mind.”

She says their team also recognizes that every space is different. That’s why custom sizing and material choice matter so much. “InCord tailors each system to the sport, the layout, and the level of play,” she says. “We work with facilities across the country to design sports netting systems that fit their specific needs, using high-quality materials and hardware built to last. Whether you need wall-to-wall protection, divider netting, or barrier netting, your solution should be custom, never cookie-cutter.”

UNLIMITED SPORTS SOLUTIONS with

RON DUBAS

As president of Unlimited Sports Solutions, Ron Dubas has become a trusted name in the sports facility and fencing industry, known for delivering top-quality products and innovative solutions that keep athletes safe and fields in peak condition. His journey to the helm of the company is a story of hard work and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Fence News had the opportunity to learn more about his journey and perspective on the industry.

What was your background before joining Unlimited Sports Solutions (USS)? I grew up on a farm in Central Nebraska. While I knew early on that farming wasn’t the path I wanted to pursue, time has given me a deep appreciation for that upbringing and the lessons it offered. My parents taught us the value of a hard day’s work, pride in what we do, the importance of being a good neighbor, and gratitude for what we have—principles that have stayed with me throughout my life.

Before making the move to USS, I spent nearly two decades in the corporate sector, working in sales, marketing, and management. That experience gave me invaluable training and business insight, but over time I realized that many corporate practices didn’t align with my personal values and vision for how business should be done. So I made a change.

What appealed to you about USS? Sports have been a constant in my life. Whether as an athlete, coach or fan, they’ve been a big part shaping who I am. They’ve fueled my competitive spirit, my drive for continual self-improvement and my love for strategizing for success. I’m deeply grateful to my business partner, Matt Warner, for trusting me to help bring his vision for Unlimited Sports Solutions to life. In this role, I’ve found my passion: a perfect blend of everything I love about sports with the professional skills I’ve developed, all while contributing to the sports industry I care so deeply about.

What roles have you held with USS, and what are your primary responsibilities now? During the infancy of USS, I was heavily involved with all day-to-day functions, including estimating, marketing, project management, logistics, procurement and sales. I will be the first to admit, some of those roles are not strengths of mine and we succeeded in spite of my short comings. As the company has grown, so has our team, and I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside such talented individuals who excel in their respective roles. Their expertise has allowed me to shift my focus toward leadership—supporting the team, fostering their growth and helping them navigate challenges as we continue to build the business together.

What sets USS apart from competitors? We position ourselves as a true one-stop shop for athletic field construction products, with most of our offerings designed and fabricated right on our 80-acre campus in Waverly, Nebraska. What truly sets us apart is the pride we take in supporting installers, something that starts at the product design stage. Every product is developed from an installer’s perspective, drawing heavily on the expertise of our sister company, Empire Netting & Fence, a nationally recognized premier sports construction contractor. Using their hands-on experience ensures our products are not only efficient to install but also built to withstand the test of time. Beyond that, we actively incorporate feedback from customers across the country, allowing us to continually refine and enhance our products to meet real-world needs.

How has the company grown over the last five years? Our growth has confirmed what we believed from the start: there was a gap in the industry that needed to be filled. By delivering exceptional installer support and maintaining the highest product quality standards, we’ve achieved significant year-over-year growth. Today, including our fabrication division, we’re proud to have a team of 38 dedicated and hardworking individuals, all “rowing in the same direction” toward our shared goals.

Who are the customers you serve? Fence contractors hold a special place in our hearts; not only because that’s where our own story began, but also because they make up the largest portion of our installer network. Thanks to their work, our products can be found everywhere from youth fields and city parks to schools, colleges, and even Major League Baseball and NFL facilities.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Working in the fence industry is incredibly rewarding. Many of the operators we work with are honest, fair, and hardworking—values that align closely with our own. Partnering with people of such character motivates our team to give their very best every day. On a personal level, few things compare to walking a completed project with an installer and seeing a top-quality facility ready for athletes, families, and fans to create lasting memories.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced and how were you able to overcome these? Some of our biggest challenges in the first five years were managing rapid growth, establishing standard operating procedures and increasing brand awareness. Overcoming these hurdles has required a willingness to take risks, learn from failures and continually evaluate and refine our approach. That mindset has allowed us to adapt quickly and keep moving forward.

What are your goals for the company? We believe Unlimited Sports Solutions has the potential to be a transformative force in our industry. Our deep understanding of the challenges faced by installation customers, combined with our passion for sports and our commitment to high quality, gives us a unique perspective. We’ve set ambitious growth goals that we believe are achievable by staying focused on delivering unmatched customer support and producing high-quality, visually appealing products that stand out in the marketplace.

Have you had any role models or mentors who positively influenced your success? Both in my professional journey and personal life, my parents have been, and continue to be, my greatest role models. Their deep faith shapes who they are, and growing up on a farm, I saw how farming itself is an ongoing act of faith. They taught me to focus

on what I can control and to trust that whatever lies beyond my control will be manageable. They also instilled in my siblings and me the importance of doing what’s right, even when no one is watching. These values, along with many other lessons they shared, have been invaluable in guiding my professional path.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “Don’t be afraid to fail.” That advice has always resonated with me, but it’s taken on a deeper meaning during my time at USS. I’ve learned that if you’re not experiencing any failures, you’re probably staying too comfortable and in doing so, limiting your growth.

How do you stay motivated every day? I genuinely love what I do, so staying motivated rarely feels like a challenge. My team, our customers, and our shared purpose are constant sources of inspiration. That said, there are times when stress can weigh me down. In those moments, I turn to podcasts, books, and, most importantly, my support system, especially my wife Jenna, to help me refocus and regain perspective. I’m very proud of, and motivated by, my family. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart Jenna for 26 years. She is a Nursing Professor at UNMC. We enjoy traveling, playing pickleball & golf together, and spending time on our acreage. Our daughter, Mya, is in her third year at the University of Nebraska where she is

active in her sorority and is on the Dean’s List. Our son, Cameron, is a senior in High School. He is a busy multi-sport athlete and has spent two summers working in the USS padding shop

What advice would you give someone just starting out in this industry? Relationships are the foundation of success. Without genuine rapport, you’re simply another vendor. By investing in relationships, you build trust and that trust transforms you into a true partner.

Celebrating 75 Years of J.C. Gury Company: A Legacy of Quality, Family, and Service

As J. C. Grury Company celebrates their 75th anniversary, the company reflects on the incredible journey that brought them to where they are today.

J.C. Gury was founded in 1949 by John C. Gury as a one-man sales brokerage. After his passing, Joe Kinda purchased the company from John’s widow, Betty Gury, in 1971. Joe, a seasoned industrial sales professional, had earned Betty’s trust and respect, and she believed he was the right person to carry on the business.

The company’s first office was modest— just two small connecting rooms. Joe taught his wife, Mary Kinda (later Mary Cobb), the ins and outs of the advertising specialty business, including how to place orders and handle invoicing. The family also made rubber stamps as part of their growing product line.

The business began to evolve when Joe’s brother needed nameplates for magazine racks, and the request required screen printing.

Joe’s sons, who had learned screen printing in school, gave it a try. The demand quickly grew, prompting Joe to rent a slightly larger space with a small shop area. One of his sons came on board full-time, diving deeper into screenmaking and the printing process.

By 1979, demand had increased so much that the company moved into a much larger facility, equipped with a printing press, drying racks, and a die cutter. As the company continued to expand, it eventually settled into its current location in La Habra, California, in 1996.

From approximately 1999 to 2014, three generations of the family worked together in the business. Employees have always been considered part of the “work family,” and many have been with the company for 20 to 35 years. Joe Kinda built a workplace founded on fairness and respect, which employees returned with hard work and loyalty. Joe passed away on December 1, 2022, at the age of 93, leaving

behind a lasting legacy.

Today, Mary (Kinda) Cobb proudly continues to lead J.C. Gury Company, upholding the values and traditions Joe established while embracing growth and innovation.

J.C. Gury Company remains committed to producing high-quality screen-printed products—primarily signs and decals. Many of their customers have been with them for decades, and they are deeply grateful for their continued trust and support. Their dedicated customer service team is passionate about helping clients find the perfect sign or decal to meet their needs. They are also thankful for their exceptional suppliers who help them deliver outstanding results.

As they look to the future, they remain excited about printing more signs and decals— and building more meaningful relationships along the way.

Summer Meeting in Montreal Sends a Message of Differing Viewpoints but Shared Values

Headquartered in the brand-new version of the Sofitel Montreal, the CLFMI Summer Meeting in July hosted more than 80 company representatives and guests as they discussed tariffs, chain link industry news, and market opportunities in both the U.S. and Canada.

The group also took advantage of the spectacular Montreal weather to see some of the many cultural, architectural, and social delights of this unique city on the St. Lawrence River. Most importantly, the impressive lineup of speakers provided attendees with an enormous amount of information, and ideas, that they can use to better manage their businesses in the last half of 2025.

Julie White, vice president and CEO of the Manufacturiers et Exportateurs du Québec (MEQ), was the opening speaker, and she wasted no time getting to the biggest issue attendees wanted to discuss: the potential "tariff wars" between the United States and Canada. She gave a concise and clear description of the viewpoint of the more than 14,000 Canadian manufacturers her organization represents. She listed the options her members are considering to deal with any long-term effects of the trade negotiations She also pointed out the many similarities these options shared with choices U.S. manufacturers are facing at this time. White closed her presentation by reminding the audience of the hundreds of millions of dollars in cross-border trade that goes on between the manufacturing sectors of the two countries on a regular basis, and expressed her support of continued discussions among various sectors, such as the forum the CLFMI meeting provided.

CLFMI Chief Economist Dr. Matthew Kidder provided a revised 2nd Quarter Industry Analysis and Economic Report. He also gave a brief report on the 2nd Quarter chain link market performance, pointing out the especially strong showing in the framework category. Dr. Kidder then unveiled some new tools he is developing to allow members to track a number of factors affecting the chain link industry on a real-time basis. This includes several import-related databases which can show the level of imported products coming into the United States (and Canada). This information can help CLFMI member companies better identify the market size, and their market position.

Keynote Speaker Marc Andre Morel had the attendees talking all the way to the airport about his brilliant closing program. His spot-on examples of the challenges managers face in dealing with the modern workforce provided lively discussion and a lot of head-nodding. Morel talked about the various levels of leadership, dealing with a multi-generational workforce, and the changing environment with which leaders are confronted. His presentation included some specific suggestions on how to communicate with today's diverse workforce, and opportunities for attendees to identify what they are looking for when hiring new employees. He ended his program with a list of five "musts" for effective leaders and left to a standing ovation.

The Summer Meeting wasn't ALL educational sessions and committee reports. Members had the chance to participate in the annual Summer Meeting Golf Outing on the beautiful Golf De L'ile De Montreal Island Course, and everyone got a chance to see Montreal from a unique viewpoint during an idyllic Luncheon Cruise on the St. Lawrence River.

A Guide to Deck Railings:

9 Questions

With so many choices for material, color, and style, deck railings should be a key component of the design discussion when selling outdoor living spaces, not an afterthought. But what railing options are best for your customers? Envision Outdoor Living Products, manufacturer of Envision composite decking and Fairway deck and porch railings, provides nine simple questions to consider when choosing a deck railing style and material — plus an easy three-step process to make the specification and buying process easier.

1. WHAT IS THE REQUIRED HEIGHT IN YOUR AREA?

The code will call for 36” or 42”.

2. DOES THE DECK HAVE A LOT OF ANGLES?

to Help Sell Or Specify the Best Option for Every Project

If there are level runs with angles, certain styles of railing will be more user friendly. Aluminum railings, for example, are the easiest to install on level angles. Composite railings also can be used but may require a larger post sleeve at the angle. The degree of angles is much more limited with vinyl railings.

3. WHAT ARE THE SURROUNDINGS?

Is there a view the customer wants to maintain? This will eliminate certain bulkier rail styles and can indicate a sleeker infill style.

4. WHAT IS THE BUDGET?

From a materials standpoint, in general vinyl railings tend to be the most affordable, then steel, then composite, and then aluminum. In terms of infill styles, square balusters tend to be more budget friendly and then round balusters; glass panels and cable railing are more premium. But you also can mix and match to meet both budget and style needs.

5. WHAT IS THE LOCATION?

Coastal areas need railing materials that can withstand the salty, moist air, so vinyl, composite, and aluminum are a better option than steel.

6. WILL THE DECK HAVE LIGHTING?

A two-piece top rail will provide the most labor-friendly application of LED wiring. A twopiece design also makes it easier to access the lighting in the future should it need to be repaired.

7. WILL THE DECK BE USED FOR FREQUENT ENTERTAINING?

If so, a drink rail may be a great fit, as it provides a flat surface for placing drinks and small plates.

8. WHAT IS THE HOME’S STYLE?

Railing Selection in 3 Simple Steps

With four popular, low maintenance material options – aluminum, vinyl, composite, and steel, Envision’s Fairway Railing Collection takes the complexity out of choosing railing for projects and simplifies it down to three easy steps:

1. Choose a railing style: Choose a Modern, Designer, or Traditional rail style, a railing material, and an infill.

Though there are no official rules, certain types of railings pair better with particular home styles. For example, an ultra-modern house will likely look best with slimmer top rails and balusters or with cable rail infill. In general, metals like aluminum and steel will have a sleeker look, while composite and vinyl are often the answer when traditional styles are desired.

9. IS THE DESIRED LOOK BOLD OR BLENDED?

The choice to match railing to decking or to use railing as a pop of detail comes down to personal preference. One way to help customers decide is to use an online deck visualizer tool, where they can experiment with decking and railing colors and styles to see what appeals and looks best.

2. Choose posts: Residential or commercial heights with slim or large structural post and post sleeve options.

3. Choose accessories: Add style and function with lighting, drink rails, ADA handrails, and more.

Fences and Flood Zones: Five Things to Keep in Mind

Fences and flood zones don’t always get along. For contractors, it’s important to help customers in flood-prone areas understand the risks and to work with local regulations and site conditions to give a fence the best possible chance of lasting through rising water.

“Contractors tell us all the time that building in a flood-prone area is a challenge,” says Al Martins, Fence Armor® director. “We listen, learn, and share what’s worked for them, so others can plan smarter and give their fences the best chance to stand strong.”

1. Plan placement carefully. When installing near rivers, creeks, or other water sources, careful site planning is essential. Many contractors recommend placing the fence as far as practical from the water’s edge, using higher ground where possible. This can help reduce exposure to flooding and prevent erosion. Always check local regulations and permitting requirements before building near waterways.

2. Use durable materials and protect the posts. High-grade, pressure-treated wood or quality vinyl are common choices for flood-prone areas. Post-protection products, such as Fence Armor® PostGuard™ or RotGuard™, can help protect the

vulnerable ground-line portion of wood posts from rot and decay, extending their service life.

3. Allow water and debris to pass through. Many installers avoid attaching mesh or solid panels near the ground in flood zones, as these can trap driftwood, sediment, and other debris, which can add damaging pressure to the fence. A small clearance at the bottom can allow floodwater to flow through more freely.

4. Work with the water flow. In some situations, aligning fence lines parallel to the expected water flow can help reduce direct pressure on the posts during a flood. Where this isn’t possible,

consulting with local building authorities or an engineer can help determine the safest orientation for the structure.

5. Strengthen post-installation where possible. Many professionals recommend setting posts deeper and ensuring they are anchored in solid soil. In some cases, spacing posts slightly closer together than standard can add structural strength. For wood posts, adding ground-line protection, such as Fence Armor® PostGuard™ or RotGuard™, can help prevent decay in this vulnerable area.

“Keep in mind that every property in a floodprone area is unique, and what works in one location may not work in another,” adds Martins. “We share these ideas for general awareness and inspiration, not as specific instructions for your site. Always work with a qualified fence contractor or engineer, follow local codes, and get the right permits before starting your project. Fence Armor® products are designed to help protect the ground-line portion of wood posts from rot, but they are not a guarantee against flood damage.”

Fireproof Fences for Today

Fire-resistant fencing has become a crucial consideration for homeowners, particularly in wildfire-prone areas. Insurance companies are increasingly recognizing the value of fireproof fences as a first line of defense against property damage and loss.

By investing in a fire-resistant fence, such as FireSmart® Metal Fence System with Metal Fence Posts by BarrierBoss, homeowners can not only protect their property but also potentially save themselves from significant heartache, hassle, and financial burden.

Insurance companies are now placing a higher emphasis on fire prevention measures, including the installation of fire-resistant fencing. This shift in focus is driven by the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires in many regions.

The professionals at Barrier Boss highlight several fire-resistant fencing options available to homeowners:

Steel Panel Fencing: This non-combustible option meets rigorous fire safety standards and is ideal for high-risk areas.

Stone Fencing: Stone fences offer both security and fire resistance while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

Aluminum Fencing: Similar to steel, aluminum is a durable and noncombustible fence option that could act as a fire barrier.

Composite Wood Fencing: These fences are designed to withstand harsh conditions and resist decay, offering a balance of durability and fire resistance.

Corrugated Metal Fence: A corrugated metal panel fence can be installed on wood or metal posts. The key is having a large metal panel that does not combust and is solid enough to prevent fire from going through or over.

Artificial Boxwood Hedges: NFPA 701 Method 2 certified artificial hedges provide a fire-resistant alternative to traditional fencing while maintaining a natural look.

Investing in a fire-resistant fence can provide numerous benefits:

• Enhanced Safety: Fire-resistant fencing acts as a barrier, potentially slowing the spread of wildfires and giving homeowners more time to evacuate.

• Property Protection: These fences can help shield your home and belongings from fire damage.

• Financial Savings: By preventing extensive damage, fire-resistant fencing can save homeowners from costly repairs and replacements.

• Insurance Advantages: Many insurance companies offer incentives for homes with fire-resistant features.

Masonry Fencing: Similar to stone, masonry fences provide excellent fire protection.

• Peace of Mind: Knowing that your property has an additional layer of protection can provide invaluable peace of mind.

BarrierBoss’s FireSmart® Metal Fence System with Metal Fence Posts is Strata and HOA approved. BarrierBoss is the only manufacturer

of a dip coated all metal fence panel system in North America. The system has the highest grade of rust proofing, scratch abrasion, UV protection, salt exposure testing and the largest overall dimensional measurements (U-Channel and Post Thickness) of all comparable metal fence panel kits on the market. The sleek metal privacy fence kits go up to 8' in height and 8' in width.

As wildfires become more frequent and intense, fire-resistant fencing is becoming more important. By choosing a non-combustible fence,

homeowners can potentially save themselves from the heartache and hassle associated with fire damage. Not only does it provide an essential layer of protection for your property, but it also aligns with insurance companies' growing preference for proactive fire prevention measures.

Fencing That Stands Up to Nature and Stands Out in Design

Why SLEEKFENCE is becoming the go-to choice for disaster-ready projects

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, a time when communities across North America are encouraged to take stock of their readiness for hurricanes, wildfires, and other severe events. While most attention goes to roofing, siding or windows, fencing is often the first part of a property to fail in high winds or serve as a pathway for fire. Choosing the right system can make the difference between damage and defense.

SLEEKFENCE, a manufacturer of premium aluminum fencing systems,

is positioning itself as a specificationfriendly solution for both residential and commercial builds. “Our products are engineered as a complete system, where every component is designed to work together,” says Simon Mitchell, CEO of SLEEKFENCE. “Everything is tested to meet or exceed some of the toughest building codes in North America.”

In hurricane-prone regions, SLEEKFENCE has been independently rated to withstand wind speeds over 160 mph. In wildfire zones, it holds both ASTM E84 Class A and ASTM E136 fire-resistance ratings, making it a non-combustible option that won’t ignite or melt under extreme heat. The system is also ISO 9227 salt spray tested for corrosion resistance, a benefit in coastal or industrial environments where rust is a concern.

Real-world performance matches the lab results. In Florida, one SLEEKFENCE installation weathered Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton without structural or cosmetic damage, even as neighboring fences failed. “When we design a system, it’s with both engineering compliance and real-world resilience in mind,” says Simon. “That’s why we see it specified in projects where performance isn’t optional.”

Strength is only part of the story. The company’s modern, architectural aesthetic makes it as much a design element as a functional barrier. Available in black, white, and woodgrain finishes, the system offers adaptable heights and layouts for a range of applications, from high-end homes to multiresidential developments, commercial perimeters, and high-security facilities. Style options include full privacy, screen, slat-top, and the brand’s newest addition, the Shadowbox design, which features layered, overlapping boards for added visual texture without sacrificing privacy.

Contractors and developers cite additional benefits. The modular, preengineered design speeds up installation, reducing labor costs. Consistent manufacturing tolerances minimize call-backs, while the system’s low maintenance requirements extend its service life and reduce long-term ownership costs.

With five-star reviews across its customer base, SLEEKFENCE has built a reputation for both product quality and service. For property stakeholders looking to combine compliance, resilience, customization, and modern design, the company offers a solution that performs in the harshest conditions — and looks good doing it.

Fire-Resistant Fencing and Gates

Reprinted with permission from Fire Safe Marin

Many wildfire educational programs, along with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) recommend non-combustible fencing and gate products when placed within five feet of a building. A non-combustible gate between the fence and the home can provide significant ignition protection.

Non-Combustible Fencing and Gates Reduce Potential Home Ignitions

Using non-combustible fencing/gates where they attach to the building reduces the opportunity of a burning fence or gate igniting the exterior of the structure. Fencing products are often available in eight-foot pieces and use of that full section of non-combustible material is recommended. Observations made during the 2012 Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs, Colorado, provided evidence that burning fencing generates embers that can result in additional ignitions downwind.

Tips to Avoid Fence Ignitions

Recent research conducted by IBHS and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), both independently and in a collaborative project, provided additional information about the vulnerability of combustible fencing:

1. Use a non-combustible fence section when it’s attached to a building.

2. The area at the base of the fence should be kept clear of debris. Flame spread to the building will be more likely if fine vegetative fuels (e.g., pine needles, leaf litter, and small twigs) have accumulated. Avoid placement of combustible mulch near the fence.

3. A fence design that allows for greater airflow, such as a single panel lattice fence, makes it more difficult for wind-blown embers to accumulate at plank, or lattice panel to horizontal support locations. If an ignition occurs, it’s also more difficult for lateral flame spread to occur in the fencing material. Fence ignitions from wind-blown embers are more likely to occur at locations where vertical fencing planks attach to horizontal support members.

4. The most vulnerable fencing from this perspective is a “privacy” fence, where the fence planks are on the same side as the horizontal support members. A fence built from lattice that’s applied to both sides of the support posts may be desired for privacy or other landscaping purposes but should be avoided in wildfire-prone areas. Recent research at NIST has demonstrated that fire growth and lateral flame spread are much greater in this design style.

5. Vinyl fencing is not vulnerable to ember exposures alone but did burn when subjected to flaming exposures from burning debris. Vinyl fencing will deform if subjected to radiant heat.

Steel Perimeter Fencing

When neighboring buildings are within 20 feet of each other, using steel fencing for the perimeter area can serve as a radiant barrier, providing added protection should a neighboring building ignite and burn. Research in Australia demonstrated the ability of panelized steel fencing to resist radiant heat exposure. There are many options and styles available including wood grain look and vibrant colors.

Fiber Cement Fencing

Fiber cement is a noncombustible product composed of cement, sand and cellulose fibers. The product comes in many different styles, heights and colors with texture options that can mimic a wood fence.

Noncombustible Gates

There are many noncombustible gate options to choose from. Several manufacturers have ready-made steel and aluminum gates in a variety of styles and colors. Hardie board is a good option and, if privacy is not a major concern, hog wire gates are a less expensive option. Many manufacturers can fabricate a custom ornamental metal gate.

NIST published results of 187 experiments that examined how fire spread toward a structure is affected by combustible fences and mulch under conditions that may be encountered in a wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire. The research generated a number of recommendations:

• Avoid parallel fences to reduce exposure to large flames. Parallel fences can result in highly hazardous fuel accumulation corridors that are difficult to access and maintain. Spacing of 3 feet between fences is not sufficient.

• Avoid proximity to other combustible fuels, to reduce fire intensity and limit fire spread. This includes fuels above the fence and fuels across parcel boundaries. Avoid mulch at base of fence.

• Avoid proximity of combustible fences to residence, including neighboring residence, to prevent direct ignition.

• Fire spread is more likely with wood and woodplastic composite fences than with fences made of vinyl or noncombustible materials such as stone, brick, or steel.

• Keep fence and yard clear of debris, to reduce the amount of fuel and potential pathways for fire.

• Harden structures against firebrands to prevent structure ignition from embers produced by fences or other combustible sources. Visit

Compared to What?

A lot of time is spent by people in the fence industry trying to gauge their company’s “market share.” This is certainly a legitimate metric for all companies in our industry to use, whether they are manufacturers, distributors, retailers, or contractors.

Of course, each of these groups might be measuring different things, in different ways. For example:

• Manufacturers could measure total sales in dollars; or total sales in tons of products; or total sales in differing markets, such as residential, commercial industrial or high security.

• Distributors might be interested in their market share of products sold geographically; or by type of fencing (wood; chain link; vinyl; ornamental).

• For contractors, their market share might be measured by number of projects; or by total contract value; or by number of bids awarded.

These are all pretty standard metrics, but when trying to determine your company’s market share, the first question has to be: how big is the fencing industry in the U.S. (or Canada or Mexico or all three)? Until you have determined the total market size, it is challenging to figure out your company’s market share. So, you really do need to have some idea what the size of the total market is to realistically understand your company’s performance. There are plenty of places on the internet

you can go to in order to get an estimate of the total value of the U.S. fencing industry. Google, ChatGPT, or the U.S. Department of Commerce website will all give you a number to start with, and you can compare from there. I went to all of these sources, and it all came down to “it depends.” Do you want to measure the fencing industry by the total (manufactured) value, or by the total value of the products sold, or by the total value of all installed fencing?

This could go on and on, but let’s look at an average estimate from all of these sources, based on that last measurement, total revenue for installed fencing in the U.S: 24.7 billion dollars.

That might not sound like much when, for example, experts say that the recent economic bill passed by Congress will cost 3.4 trillion dollars. But, $24.7 billion is still a substantial number. As the late Senator Everett Dirksen once noted, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

Here is another way to look at the size of the U.S. fencing market. $24.7 billion dollars is bigger than the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of over 60 countries in the world! Think about that. Our industry alone is more valuable than the total value of everything produced in each of those 60 countries in an entire year.

We need to stop thinking of ourselves as a small part of the overall construction industry. We are an important, vibrant, and growing industry on our own.

We are also an industry full of opportunity. Every economic forecast and study says the fencing industry is going to continue having modest but consistent growth over the next

few years. The reasons for this optimism most often cited in these studies are the continuing need for physical safety, the increased use of sustainable materials and the integration of new technologies. That sounds like a blueprint for growth, and success, to me.

If the fencing industry is worth more than some countries in the world, there should also be plenty of opportunities for the workforce of our industry to be world-class. This is a critical time for workforce development, as the speed of change in our industry can have a dramatic effect on any company’s market share. We should use this time to enhance the “brand” of our industry by making it a great place to grow a career, as well as a business.

The next time someone asks you how big the fence industry is, just answer, “Compared to what?”

As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

New Tariffs May Increase the Cost of Fencing Materials

Tariffs are taxes imposed on imported goods. The Trump Administration is imposing high tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, copper and most other goods imported into the United States. These tariffs vary depending on the type of product and on the country of origin. As of the date of this article, steel, aluminum and copper are subject to a 50% tariff, autos and auto parts 25%, imports from Canada 35%, Mexico 25%, and China 30%. However, rates are under negotiation and are likely to change in the future.

The Trump tariff program may significantly increase the cost of materials used in fencing products such as steel and wood. Imported steel products will be subject to a 50% tariff regardless of the country of exportation. Wood products imported from Canada will be subject to a 35% tariff. Wood products imported from other countries will be subject to the tariffs applied to that country. Tariffs will allow domestic producers of steel, wood and other fencing materials to

increase their prices and expand domestic production.

The Trump tariff program is intended to address the deficit in trade of goods (over $1.2 trillion in 2024), retaliate against countries that have high tariffs and other barriers to US exports, create leverage to expand US exports, return manufacturing to the United States, and raise significant additional revenue to address federal budget deficits. Economists have estimated that the new tariffs could raise between $4-$5 trillion in tax revenue over the next ten years.

President Trump’s authority to impose tariffs on a country-by-country basis is currently being challenged in court. The US Court of International Trade decided in May that he did not have authority to impose country tariffs and that decision is now on appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The US Supreme Court will ultimately decide the case. However, if the courts decide that the President doesn’t have

authority Congress can enact the Trump tariffs as legislation.

Fencing businesses that import materials should consult their customs brokers and attorneys for advice to minimize the impact of the new tariffs. Imports can be stored in customs bonded warehouses or foreign-trade zones duty free until they are used. These customs procedures allow businesses to postpone duty assessments and take advantage of future court decisions or negotiations that may lower applicable tariffs.

He had a career as an international trade lawyer, working in more than 50 countries and is the author of “What You Need to Know to Go Global”. He is currently working on a new book on tariffs and trade.

Attitude is Everything

The phrase "Attitude is Everything" is often attributed to motivational speakers and writers like Jeff Keller, author of the book Attitude Is Everything: Change Your Attitude ... Change Your Life!, and of course from famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar who said ``Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.'' Why is this such a wildly popular phrase, and is it more than just that, a popular phrase?

In my humble opinion, your attitude towards your job, your coworkers and, really, life in general, is part and parcel to living a happy and fulfilled life. It is also an integral part of the “Culture of Success” I so often speak of in my seminars and articles in the fence industry.

This is especially important if you work in the sales department. You must know that any potential buyer is far more aware of the subliminal messages produced by the sales pitch than most of us give them credit for. One of the strongest of those subliminal messages is the attitude of the sales person toward their product, their company and even towards their prospective customer.

You have to “feel the love” so to speak, to sell the product. That is one of the primary ingredients to a successful advertising campaign and one that major manufacturers are infinitely aware of. It is the underlying reasons for the use of all of those positive advertising campaigns you see everywhere, especially with all the tariff and overall economic uncertainty we are facing these days.

Beware however, the opposite is also true. If you or someone you work with hates their job, is unhappy with their boss, or in any way, shape, or form, is disgruntled in the performance of their daily duties;

www.fenceindustrypodcast.com

everyone will suffer. Behavior is infectious, both good and bad.

But a positive attitude in the workplace has implications more far reaching than just promoting sales.

Several clients I have worked with in the past have placed a good deal of importance on the attitude and culture within their fence company and the results have been outstanding. Fencers from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Houston, Texas, and even Kona, Hawaii, have used the power of attitude adjustment to create a positive and fulfilling work culture and shared in the resulting benefits both financially and emotionally.

With improved employee attitudes, individual performance and the overall productivity of the sales department and the entire company skyrocketed. The few employees in those companies who did not step up to the plate had to be let go, but the majority did great, and in just a few short months the improvement was unbelievable. For one of my clients, we even made a big sign and hung it in the sales department. The sign said, “YOU GOTTA BELIEVE OR YOU GOTTA LEAVE!”

In less than six months, the improved attitude of the sales department began to permeate the rest of the company. Morale jumped, efficiencies dramatically improved, profits and volume began to return to the company, errors all but disappeared, and now, the entire staff actually smiles again when they come to work. But the best part is that this good attitude promoted a better attitude that promoted even better attitudes, etc. Bottom lines and paychecks improved and these days everybody is happier coming to work in the morning once again.

A positive attitude is one of the most important things that you can bring to work with you. In fact it is critical. “You Gotta Believe Baby… In yourself and your company!”

SWI Fence Summer Bash Showcases Training, Tools, and Industry Collaboration in Wyoming

Fence professionals from across the region gathered in Powell and Cody, Wyoming, from July 17–19 for SWI Fence’s annual Summer Bash, a multi-day event focused on professional development, shop innovation, and relationshipbuilding within the fencing industry.

Attendees participated in hands-on training, networking opportunities, and vendor engagement. Visitors toured both the Powell and Cody locations to observe shop layouts, meet the teams behind the scenes, and explore the systems and workflows that support SWI’s reputation for quality and efficiency.

A key focus of this year’s Bash was technical training and product education. Industry leader Shawn King of Mr. Fence led hands-on instruction for the new I-Drive Power System, offering practical guidance on implementation and use in the field. The event also featured participation from Brian Frederiksen of the Fence Workers Association and others, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of knowledge-sharing and standards advancement.

The Bash was supported by a strong lineup of vendor sponsors, including:

Rhino Tool

Nice For You

Binns Canada

Southwest Automated Security

Wood Defender

Cameo Fencing

Specialty Tool & Attachment

Beaver Valley

Sponsors were on hand to demonstrate tools, automation systems, coatings, and materials, offering attendees the opportunity to see new innovations up close and ask technical questions directly to manufacturer representatives.

While the event featured a training focus, it also provided space for informal networking and team-building, including a golf tournament, live music, and a Saturday evening fireworks show. SWI team members and their families were also invited to participate, adding to the sense of connection across roles and regions.

The Summer Bash further served as a touchpoint for those exploring the SWI Fence franchise opportunity, offering a firsthand look at company culture, infrastructure, and support systems in action.

What the Fence Industry Can Learn from Milwaukee Tool’s Revolution

When Steve Richman became group president of Milwaukee Tool in 2007, he joined an 83-yearold company selling a limited range of traditional power tools. “We were this small little company… our brand was your grandfather’s brand,” Richman recalled in a recent Culture X podcast. At the time, the company’s revenues were under $500 million, competing against tool giants like Dewalt, Black & Decker, and Makita, each significantly larger and with more diverse offerings than Milwaukee.

Richman transformed the company’s strategy, culture and brand identity. Today, Milwaukee Tool is the global market leader in its segment, offering a wide range of cordless power tools marketed to the building trades. The company has delivered double-digit revenue growth for nearly two decades, and its parent company, TTI, which includes the brands Ryobi, Rigid and Hart, has easily outpaced competitors in shareholder returns.

Ask Richman what fueled this growth, and his answer is simple. He has great people, a strong culture, and clarity about how they create value. His philosophy has three pillars, strategic clarity, extreme ownership and candid discussions of setbacks. Each of these pillars hold valuable carryover lessons for leaders in the fence industry.

Strategic Clarity

In his interview, Richman points out that culture alone isn’t enough, a clearly articulated strategy is key to communication. In Milwaukee’s early turnaround years, the focus was on deeply understanding target users, identifying their pain points, and delivering solutions to increase productivity and safety. The commitment to lithium-ion battery technology, strategic retail partnerships and product innovation wasn’t accidental, it was the result of clear strategic direction.

For the fence industry: Strategic clarity means knowing exactly who you serve and how you deliver value that competitors cannot easily match. Are you the market leader in high-end ornamental steel? The go-to installer for access control? The most reliable partner for residential

homeowners? Without clarity of identity and purpose, teams can chase every opportunity and stretch resources too thin.

Like Milwaukee Tool, leading brands in the fence industry focus on solving the real problems of their customers, whether that’s faster installation techniques, reduced maintenance costs, or innovative logistical solutions that bring products to market faster.

Extreme Ownership

Milwaukee Tool originally used “empowerment” as a core value, but found that some employees saw it as a license to do whatever they wanted. Over time, the language shifted to “extreme ownership,” where employees were expected to take initiative and be accountable for results. That meant raising a hand early when there was a problem, asking for help, and making decisions in alignment with company goals.

For the fence industry: Extreme ownership is just as vital on a job site or in a fabrication shop. A project manager spotting a potential delay with materials must speak up early, not wait until it jeopardizes a deadline. A crew leader noticing an installation error needs to correct it immediately rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.

When everyone — from the sales team to the installers — sees themselves as owners of the customer’s experience, trust grows, projects stay on track, and reputations are built for the long term.

Candid Discussions of Setbacks

Richman believes candid conversations about problems are among the hardest — and most necessary — cultural habits to build. At Milwaukee Tool, setbacks aren’t met with finger-pointing, but with problem-solving: “How are we going to fix it, why did it happen, and how will we prevent it next time?”

For the fence industry: Every company faces challenges — a missed measurement, a supply chain disruption, an equipment failure. The healthiest teams bring those issues into the open

quickly, fix them and capture lessons learned.

Bringing It Home

Milwaukee Tool’s transformation wasn’t just about building better products, it was about aligning strategy, culture, and accountability so completely that growth became the natural outcome. For companies in our space, the lesson is clear. Clarity about where you’re going, ownership of results at every level, and open dialogue about challenges can transform your team and your business. The products we create, install, and innovate may differ, but the principles that drive success remain remarkably consistent.

Start-Up Stories

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

Building Support Where It’s Needed Most

Before there was The Fence Show, there was a need and an opportunity to support small fence companies solve their day-to-day problems. Addressing supplier account set up, training and hiring employees, and bringing these businesses into the bigger picture was vital for the fence industry to advance and grow. Brian Frederiksen was at the head of Las Vegas Fence where he could see firsthand the struggle small businesses faced without support from the industry as a whole and networking and trade show events with little impact. With the need clearly defined, Frederiksen came up with the solution, Fence Workers Association (FWA).

“There was no team at the start. No budget. Just many late nights building a simple website, making cold calls, printing flyers and attending trade shoes with just a folding table,” says Frederiksen, FWA founder. “It wasn’t easy. A lot of people brushed off the idea as if it was just a side project.”

Frederiksen didn’t let the industry perception dissuade him. Consistency was the key to proving his mission was more than just a fleeting pursuit. As the message continued to spread, more fence professionals jumped on board.

“Fence companies were learning about us just as much as we were learning from them. We started with the daily operations and then launched training programs. Then came The Fence Show. This was the turning point for the industry. The conversations were shifting from policy and big-picture talks, to how to support the trade by growing small business and attracting new professionals.”

Frederiksen and his team’s commitment to supporting small business, and the industry as a whole, has positioned FWA as a trusted voice. With members across the country and a growing line up of trainings,

expos and tools to help fence professionals build something sustainable, FWA continues to bring life and energy back to the industry culture.

“We’re building on what we know works and plan to offer more trainings, more help for small businesses, more programs to get young people into the trade, expanding the Fence University, and making The Fence Show a center point of the industry,” says Frederiksen. “This is only the beginning. We’ve had the wake up, now it’s up to all of us to keep pushing forward.”
