Safe Earth Drill Storage How to Store Earth Drills Properly Throughout the Winter Months

Most contractors that employ earth drills will experience an approximately three-to-four-month winter period in which the equipment is not being used. Before storing an earth drill for the season, Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver, says it’s important to take some time to thoroughly examine the drill and ensure that all components are in working order.

He offers these simple steps that will help ensure the machine is ready to go in the spring.

Hydraulic Hibernation

To prepare a hydraulic model for storage, remove the shroud between the tank and the engine to inspect the coupling component. Make sure the rubber spider is not worn or missing pieces. Check for hose leaks or loose connections and look for any cuts or cracks that might be causing them. Additionally, lock the drive head into the “storage” position by pivoting the handle.

Don’t leave the drill out in the cold all winter. Hydraulic oil thickens as it becomes cold, which could damage the hydraulic system and the hoses. The hydraulic oil needs to be changed every three months or 100 hours of use, so it’s more efficient to simply drain the oil for the storage period; just don’t forget to replenish it in the spring. Use premium mineral oil with anti-wear and antifoaming additives. If the drill does need to be used in frigid temperatures, use ISO VG 32-grade oil (46 for normal temperature operation and 68 in warmer climates).

Look for rust on the push button connector and, if there is any, wipe it down with WD-40. Check out the throttle cable — there’s a good chance it will need to be taken apart to clean. If frayed, it should be replaced.

Ready for Spring

Some storage preparation steps apply to both hydraulic and mechanical units. There are a couple options for winterizing the gasoline-powered fuel system of mechanical or hydraulic drills. The simplest is to completely drain the gas tank. Another option is to add fuel stabilizer solution, which forms a protective layer by bonding with gasoline to prevent evaporation. It also stops the buildup of sticky resins that can destroy a carburetor and remains effective for up to one year.

Fuel stabilizer is recommended any time a gas engine, especially an older one, will be out of use for three weeks or more. Fill up the rest of the tank upon taking it out of storage, as this will diffuse the stabilizer. Nonethanol gasoline is best for this type of equipment, especially when putting it away for storage or filling up in the spring. Ethanol’s corrosive effects increase the longer the machine sits idle, and the blend doesn’t always mix well with stabilizer. Once this is done, grab a couple wrenches and tighten up all bolts, as they can become loose through the course of routine drilling and transportation.

Year-End Mechanical Maintenance

Routine maintenance during active drilling periods of the year keeps the drill primed for the most rugged applications. This includes inspecting, cleaning and lubricating applicable parts for every 3040 hours of use. But when the drill’s hard work is done and it’s time for its seasonal slumber, ticking off some end-of-the-year checkboxes will make sure it’s ready to go next spring.

Always store earth drills in a warm, dry space. Left to the elements in a high-moisture area, the steel will eventually develop rust. Make sure to keep them in a space that doesn’t get heavy foot traffic, so it won’t get knocked over or otherwise disturbed, especially if there is a chance of animals or small children being nearby.

Don’t leave the blades dull or rounded since drilling with them can damage the flighting of the auger. Install new blades if they are replaceable or sharpen carbide blades. Sharpen with a carbide bench grinding wheel tilted to a 5-7-degree relief angle. Clean the blades with warm, soapy water. Do not use a pressure washer, which is too abrasive and can cause damage.

“Properly storing earth drilling equipment will keep it running smoothly for many years to come,” adds Haynes. “For any maintenance questions, reference the owner’s manual, or work with a manufacturer to learn more about how to properly service the drill.”

Trex Adds Two New Hues with Enhanced Performance to Trex Enhance® Decking Line

Heat-mitigating* Technology Now Available at Even Cooler Price Points

Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, and a leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, is expanding performance and aesthetic options for homeowners with the addition of two new colors to the brand’s popular Trex Enhance® decking line – both featuring heat-mitigating* technology coupled with affordability.

“Trex Enhance has been a game-changer for us, for homeowners and for the entire category,” says Leslie Adkins, group vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex Company. “Since its introduction in 2019, this collection has allowed many would-be wood decking buyers to make the switch to affordable, high-quality, low-maintenance Trex decking, driving share away from wood. Our newest decking colors in this line raise the bar even higher by combining the ease, performance and affordability of Enhance decking with the innovation and added benefit of heat-mitigating* technology, previously available only in higher-priced Trex offerings.”

Engineered to compete more directly with wood, Trex Enhance features the durability and ease of maintenance for which Trex decking is world-renowned with a scalloped profile that makes the boards lighter weight for easier handling and installation. This innovative design also contributes to their lower cost.

Made from 95% recycled and reclaimed material, Enhance boards feature Trex’s proprietary outer shell, which makes them extremely durable and resistant to fading, staining and scratching. They won’t rot, warp or splinter and upkeep is hassle-free with no sanding, staining or sealing required. Just an occasional cleaning with soap and water is all that is needed to keep boards looking like new for decades.

colors in this line raise the bar even higher. . .

New Colors, New Technology

The Enhance decking line is comprised of two color collections. Enhance Basics consists of proven and popular monochromatic shades that will now gain a new subtle, misty grey color named Tide Pool. Enhance Naturals boards, featuring multi-tonal hues that resemble the streaked looks of natural wood, will now include Honey Grove, a light, honey brown reflecting evolving consumer trends favoring brown tones.

Adding to their appeal, these two new additions to the Enhance line are engineered with heat-mitigating technology in the shell to reflect UV rays and keep boards cooler* than most other composite decking products of a similar color and style.

“We introduced this technology with our Trex Transcend® Lineage™ line and are excited to make it available to a broader range of customers,” noted Adkins. “It’s proven to be a big selling point for contractors and dealers and homeowners absolutely love it.”

All Trex Enhance boards are backed by a 25-year Limited Residential and Fade & Stain Warranty.

Learn more about Trex Enhance decking at trex.com.

*Although Trex Enhance Tide Pool and Honey Grove with heat-mitigating technology are engineered to be cooler than most other composite decking products of a similar color and style, on a hot sunny day, they will get hot. On hot days, care should be taken to avoid extended contact between exposed skin and the deck surface, especially with young children and those with special needs.

CASE STUDY

Securing Democracy with Hercules M50 Bollards

As election season approaches, ensuring the safety of voters and election workers is paramount. This year, the Franklin County Board of Elections in Ohio took proactive steps to enhance security by installing Hercules M50 bollards from Barrier1 Systems. These robust security measures are designed to protect against vehicle-ramming attacks, providing peace of mind for all who visit the site.

The Hercules M50 bollards are certified to stop a 15,000 lb. vehicle traveling at 50 mph, offering exceptional protection. This level of security is essential for public spaces like the Board of Elections, where large crowds gather, and the risk of vehicular threats is ever-present.

Why Hercules M50 Bollards?

Brad Koinis, project manager at Lead Building Company, says, "Our County Department of Homeland Security official recommended the M50 bollard specification. The Barrier1 submittal package had everything our architect and client needed to ensure the project met the safety specification."

The project faced a tight timeline, with the need to have the bollards in place well ahead of the 2024 election activities. Koinis emphasizes the valuable support provided by Barrier1 throughout the process. "Dan Madden and the Barrier1 team were hands-on throughout the ordering and shipping process to ensure that we had the bollards within a tight timeline."

Built for Durability and Flexibility

The Hercules M50 bollards are not only strong but versatile. Built from high-quality steel, they are designed to withstand demanding environments and continue performing at a high level. Their durable construction resists corrosion, impact, and wear, making them ideal for areas with heavy traffic and exposure to the elements.

Each bollard is a standalone unit, making

them perfect for installation on roadways and perimeters with turns and curves. This flexibility has proven beneficial in projects such as the MGM Sphere in Las Vegas, where the bollards were installed along curving paths and walkways, ensuring comprehensive security without compromising aesthetics or functionality. These bollards offer lasting protection without sacrificing strength, ensuring dependable security in any setting.

Effortless Installation

Ease of installation was a critical factor for the Franklin County Board of Elections project. The Hercules M50 bollards, which don't require a rebar cage, made the process more straightforward and cost-effective. "The Hercules M50 bollards are not only incredibly robust, but we've received great feedback on how easy they are to install,” explains Jamie Parsons, president of Barrier1 Systems. “One of the standout features is that they don’t require a rebar cage, which has been a big costsaver for our clients. By eliminating the need for rebar, we're reducing both material costs and the labor-intensive work that typically comes with constructing and installing those cages. This not

only cuts down expenses but also keeps projects ahead of schedule—a win-win for everyone involved."

The installation of Hercules M50 bollards at the Franklin County Board of Elections emphasizes the growing need for security in public spaces. Their robust design and straightforward installation process offer a practical approach to enhancing safety without adding unnecessary complexity. As security concerns continue to shape infrastructure planning, solutions like the Hercules M50 bollards provide a dependable option for projects that demand both protection and efficiency.

Uniquely strong. Ornamental fencing is often the perfect choice when strength and aesthetics are required. The ability to customize with a variety of options makes each project distinctive.

ORNAMENTAL FENCING

A Look at the Construction and Benefits of Montage Ornamental Fence

For over 40 years, contractors have trusted Ameristar to deliver quality and innovation. Ameristar’s flagship product, Montage Ornamental Fence, is a go-to choice for contractors who value reliability and ease of installation.

The Montage System: Ease of Installation

“We prioritize making installation as straightforward as possible,” explains Mike Elmore, product manager with Ameristar. “Our Montage panels come fully assembled, thanks to our advanced profusion weld technology.”

Profusion welding refers to projection welding, a type of resistance welding. Unlike common welding methods, profusion welding focuses on creating specific points of contact between the picket and rail tab, enhancing the strength and durability of the panel.

Innovation in Brackets: Introducing QuikFit®

“The QuickFit bracket allows the installer to cut 25 – 40% off of their labor time when hanging and attaching panels with the new bracket as compared to the standard bracket,” explains Mike Elmore, product manager with Ameristar. “Our

self-threading fasteners reduce installation time making the process quicker and more efficient.”

Combatting Corrosion: The E-Coat Advantage Corrosion often starts from the inside of ornamental fence panels. To combat this, the Montage panels are coated from the inside out using Ameristar’s Electrostatic Coating (E-Coat) followed by an epoxy primer application. The panels are then baked in ovens and finished with an acrylic coating before a final bake. “This meticulous process ensures maximum protection and longevity for our fencing products,” says Elmore.

“Our dedication to research and innovation ensures that we continue to provide the best possible solutions for our customers,” says Ben Flusche, new product development manager.

“Whether it’s true advanced welding techniques, innovative brackets or superior coating processes, we are committed to delivering fence products that stand the test of time.

Planning for Profitability with Ornamental Steel Fencing

The housing market is coming back to life. In early September, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped to 6.35 percent, the lowest point in over a year. This drop, coupled with the anticipation of further rate reductions, is catalyzing a series of market events.

As potential homebuyers resumed their search for a new home, current homeowners looking to sell are investing in high-value exterior upgrades— like a new fence—to make their properties more appealing. After all, a fence not only immediately increases a home’s security factor, but a well-chosen fence can also complement the architecture of a home and enhance its curb appeal. This puts opportunity with the fencing industry to stock products that move.

Today’s offerings have come far from the golden days of white picket fence America. “When evaluating which types of fencing materials to have in stock, don’t hesitate to bring on a wood-alternative option,” says Jeff Schulz, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fortress Building Products. “For example, ornamental steel fencing, which has become synonymous with selling points like strength, durability, low maintenance and lasting style, will have big play with homeowners who are looking to upgrade their properties before they list on the market.”

Homebuyers look for low-maintenance fence options. Today’s homebuyers are well-informed and carefully weigh the maintenance needs of a home. This level of consideration extends to the fence line. For this, the potential buyer may evaluate the labor required to maintain the fence on

the property they’re hoping to purchase. “Steel fences are highly durable and resistant to the damaging effects of weathering, which directly translates to their low maintenance appeal,” explains Schulz. ”Industry-leading ornamental steel fencing systems sport a weather-resistant powder coating, ensuring lasting performance and style for years to come.”

Ornamental steel fencing helps maintain line of sight while establishing a perimeter line.

With ornamental steel fencing, homeowners looking to make exterior upgrades before listing can rest assured that their property line is secure while maintaining unobstructed sightlines. This type of fencing offers clean horizontal and vertical lines that almost fade completely into the scenery. Keeping sight lines open is especially important for those fortunate enough to have a picturesque backdrop beyond their fence line—after all, they want to highlight that selling feature. At the same time, ornamental steel fencing establishes a well-defined perimeter, serving as an effective deterrent for potential intruders while keeping children and pets from wandering off on their own. With this fence option, there’s no reason to choose between form and function.

Steel fence panels follow grade changes, speed up installation. In a dynamic real estate market, timing is crucial. With interest rates expected to continue dropping, homeowners will look for options that are quick and easy to install to prepare their homes to sell. Steel fence panels can come in sizes up to eight feet in length.

“Select options like VERSAI® ornamental steel fencing from Fortress Building Products can adjust up to 48 inches per panel to follow grade changes across uneven ground,” says Schulz. “These steel fence panels’ ability to adjust to terrain variations without experiencing metal fatigue or compromising their powder coating also works to reduce long-term maintenance.”

Choosing ornamental steel fencing is smart as suppliers evaluate their 2025 stocking strategies. By offering products that align with homeowner needs such as aesthetic appeal, enhanced durability, low maintenance qualities and a straightforward installation process, the industry can meet the moment and maximize profit margins.

Centene Community Ice Center features Ultra Aluminum Manufacturing Fences and Gates

When ARCO Construction was tasked with building the new Centene Community Ice Center in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the key requirements was a fencing system that offered strength, security, and architectural appeal.

Located in the heart of the Maryland Park Lake District, the Centene Community Ice Center is an $83 million project funded through a publicprivate partnership with support from the City of Maryland Heights, St. Louis County, and the state of Missouri. The state-of-the-art facility features four NHL-sized ice sheets, including a covered outdoor rink designed as a multipurpose venue for concerts, festivals, and other events.

The primary tenants and major capital partners of the Centene Community Ice Center include the St. Louis Blues, Lindenwood University, St. Louis Blues Alumni, the St. Louis Blues AAA program, and the St. Louis Lady Cyclones.

Fences and gates are often an after-thought on projects of this size, but ARCO Construction understood the importance of this critical feature and chose Collins & Hermann to install industrialgrade Ultra Aluminum fence and gates. Collins & Hermann focus on transportation, safety and site development components of small, medium, and large projects that require metal fabrication, guardrail, highway signs, fencing, civil construction, and security barrier needs.

“The project called for a 6-foot high fence that would provide security and easy access to areas like the VIP parking lot, while also complimenting the clean lines and modern design of the ice center,” says David Howard, president of Collins & Hermann. “We chose the Ultra Aluminum UAF 200 Flat Top fence with three rails, and incorporated several walk gates as well as a cantilever gate with a 20-foot wide opening.”

The industrial grade fencing is sturdy with 1-5/8” reinforced rails and 1” square pickets. The cantilever gate is designed with a sliding mechanism that incorporates an automatic gate opener for easy access by the professional staff and players that park in the VIP parking lot. It also incorporates a St. Louis Blues logo which really stands out for visitors to the facility.

“We’re very proud of how the project turned out,” says Jon Ranney, account manager for Ultra Aluminum. “Our engineers and estimators worked diligently with the architects and installers to ensure the client’s needs were met throughout the different phases of the project.”

“I’m a goalie coach for high school and youth league hockey players that practice at the Centene Community Ice Center, so I have the pleasure of seeing the hard work of all the teams involved on a regular basis,” added Ranney. “I’m proud of our team’s involvement in the project and for the opportunity to provide the St. Louis community with an ice center that will be enjoyed for generations to come.”

CASE STUDY

Atlanta’s Most Expansive New Home in 2024 is Surrounded by Allied Fence

OVERVIEW

After three and a half years of construction, the newest mega-mansion on Atlanta’s most prestigious street was completed in May 2024. The exquisite home built by Bildon Construction is within walking distance of the Governor’s Mansion and many of Buckhead’s finest and most expensive homes..

Located on a picturesque two-acre, heavily landscaped parcel, the home features driveway access to two streets. Bildon chose Allied Fence Co. to provide the fencing, railing, gates and gate operator equipment for the property.

Allied Fence has been serving the Atlanta area since 1953 and has grown to include showrooms, warehouses and fabrication centers in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties.

According to Todd Edlin, Allied Fence president, this residential project presented interesting challenges and opportunities for his team to showcase their products and expertise. “We were brought in during the early stages of the threeplus year build timeline, which was very helpful. The landscape architect originally specified a 4-foot-tall spear top ornamental aluminum fence for the entire two acre property. The project evolved over the course of construction, and we were able to work side-by-side with the builder and client to address changing requirements.”

PROJECT ELEMENTS

Fencing

Allied Fence built over 1,300 feet of Allience Ornamental Aluminum fence in 3-foot, 4-foot and 5-foot heights. Edlin says [omit “this is”] Allied Fence’s choice for almost all of their ornamental aluminum fence projects is Allience Ornamental Aluminum. It has hidden fasteners, so it looks more like ornamental iron, and unlike mechanical aluminum, Allience is the same on both sides. Its

strength is also terrific, and the finish will last for years,” adds Edlin.

Gates & Operators

• Two pairs of custom iron gates are installed, operated by four Byan 900 operators. Preformed loops were provided so the safety and free exit loops are hidden. Each gate is controlled by cellular-based phone systems that allow the homeowner to program and operate their gates from anywhere in the world using a phone app. Among the many features, the client can open the gates simply by saying, "Siri, call front gate," a feature that Edlin says their clients rave about. The same gate system allows the client to program scheduled openings, receive notifications when the gates are opened and request a log of user activity so they know when and who opened the gates.

• Two custom cedar walk gates with copper caps were fabricated and installed as part of the project. The frames were made with 4 x 4 cedar with tongue-in-groove cedar pickets. Sandwiched between the two layers of cedar pickets is a diagonal aluminum frame that will keep the gate from sagging for its lifetime. There is a copper cap on each gate. Ballbearing hinges were installed to give superb performance despite the rigors from the garbage collectors, pool maintenance and other service providers who would be using the gate in addition to the homeowners and their guests.

Railing

The exterior railing leading to the 6,000-squarefoot terrace level was made with iron rather than aluminum so it would give older guests the confidence they might need to hold on safely as they maneuver up and down the steps. A challenge for Allied Fence was that they could not measure or fabricate the railing until the last week of construction because the stair treads were not installed until just prior to the home's completion.

CHALLENGES

Edlin says with any project of this scope, challenges during construction are inevitable, and this project was no exception. “The complexity of the home caused serious delays for the contractor, holding up the fence installation by over a year. Most of the backyard

fence was installed about nine months prior to the home's completion. The balance of the work was completed in the final three weeks of construction.”

Edlin provides highlights of some of the challenges his team at Allied Fence successfully addressed during the course of the project:

• Because there was going to be a pool, the rear fence was changed to a height of five feet to comply with pool code.

• The home was on a corner lot, with two “required front yards" as defined by the City of Atlanta, which does not allow fences to be taller than four feet in front yards. Working with the landscape architect, Allied Fence devised a plan to use dense shrubbery to hide the visible portion of the pool fence from view, avoiding the height concern.

• Halfway through the home’s construction, the homeowner decided to eliminate the front yard fence in favor of landscaping to provide security and privacy. However, in the final week of construction, when he saw that the landscaping would not give him the needed security, the client added 700 feet of Allience Ornamental Aluminum. Fortunately, Allied Fence had a large supply and was able to react quickly to changing needs.

• A few weeks before installation, the homeowner decided to change from the specified spear top Arora style to a smooth top Eve style. Allied Fence’s large stock of both made this change possible.

• Allied Fence’s team was not able to measure or fabricate the railing leading to the terrace until the last week of construction because the stair treads were not installed until just prior to the home's completion.

“I’m proud of the work our team did on this expansive project, and more importantly, the homeowner is very pleased with their new home and the work that we did,” adds Edlin. “It’s a beautiful property.”

WAYS TO USE DECK COLORS AND PATTERNS TO DIFFERENTIATE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE DESIGNS

Along with durability and low maintenance, one of the many benefits of composite decking is its diversity of color offerings without the need to paint or stain. This provides building pros and homeowners with tremendous flexibility to design decks with unique styling that is eye-catching, functional—or both. Check out these ideas from Envision Outdoor Living Products for incorporating deck colors and patterns for standout outdoor living spaces:

1

BORDERS AND PICTURE FRAMING

Adding a border—a single or double row of deck boards around the outer edge of the deck—is one of the easiest ways to add a visual element and even increase safety and visibility. You can incorporate a plank in the same color but a different direction, select a coordinating or contrasting color, or install two planks together for a more robust look

Picture framing is a great way to create designated spaces or “rooms” in large outdoor living areas, offering a visual separation for a seating area, fire pit, or dining area. Straight and curved options may be appropriate, depending on the space and overall deck design.

2

SECTION BREAKS AND DIVIDERS

For larger expanses, adding a breaker board in a matching or coordinating color can help break up the space, add depth, and even avoid the illusion of waviness.

3

INLAYS

A deck inlay, a technique in which composite deck boards are installed at opposing angles or in custom designs within a more traditional deck layout, is a great way to set a deck apart and often can be used to designate different functional areas. Options vary from simple to intricate. The simplest is an angled inlay pattern, in which each board of the deck is installed at a 45-degree angle, often with two 45-degree angles converging to create a triangle effect or four converging to create a diamond effect.

Another option are custom image inlay patterns, which are limited only by the imagination of the homeowner and the skill of the builder. Common custom inlay patterns include wagon wheels, compass roses, and diamonds, to name a few. These inlays may be found in an expansive area of the deck or can be used to create an accent or even rug-like effect in a functional area of the deck.

PATTERNS

Though parallel planks are the most common decking layout, implementing a diagonal or herringbone pattern, or mixing and matching different plank widths, can differentiate the deck and add visual interest.

STAIRS

Stairs are another spot where adding visual interest can make a statement. Choose the same color all the way down for a “waterfall effect” or add multiple colors for a nice finish.

The outdoor living team at Envision says the additional beauty of these techniques is that they can be combined, especially for larger decks, to make the space truly your own.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly institutionalizing major changes across many industries, including construction and manufacturing. From improving efficiency and safety to optimizing costs and enhancing product quality, AI technologies are changing how companies design, build, and manufacture in the fence industry.

The construction industry, including fencing, has long been driven by labor-intensive processes and the accompanying challenges related to project management, resource allocation, and safety in such an industry. As the members of CLFMI were told during a presentation by AI expert Paul Gibbons at the CLFMI Summer Meeting in July, AI can provide some new tools that will increase productivity decrease down the line errors (both human and machine).

1. As I discovered during a recent discussion with @100 Certified Project Managers at a meeting of the Project Management Institute (PMI), AI-powered software is revolutionizing how architects and engineers plan and design construction for all types of projects. Using algorithms that analyze building codes, material properties, and environmental factors, AI systems can generate customized designs faster than traditional methods. Generative design tools allow construction teams to explore multiple design options and select the most efficient one, saving time and resources.

2. AI-driven robots and autonomous machinery are being deployed to perform repetitive and dangerous tasks such as bricklaying, excavation, and demolition. These machines can operate with precision and speed, reducing the risk of injury and increasing productivity. Drones equipped with AI are also being used for site surveys, inspections, and monitoring, providing real-time data to project managers, and providing additional layers of jobsite security.

3. AI-powered systems use sensors and machine learning algorithms to monitor the performance of construction equipment and predict when maintenance is needed. By identifying potential issues before they lead to equipment failure, this predictive

Artificial Intelligence Is Not a Joke About Pete and JakeIt’s Real and It’s Here!

maintenance helps companies minimize downtime and prevent costly repairs.

4. AI technologies are enhancing construction site safety by identifying potential hazards. Wearable devices equipped with AI sensors can monitor workers' health and environmental conditions, alerting them to dangerous situations in real-time. Additionally, AI algorithms can analyze historical safety data to predict and mitigate risks, helping companies develop better safety protocols.

5. AI-enabled data analytics tools provide insights into project progress, resource utilization, and cost management. By analyzing large volumes of data from multiple sources, AI can identify patterns, make recommendations, and help optimize project workflows. This allows construction managers to make informed decisions, reduce delays, and ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget.

6. AI is transforming quality control processes by automating the detection of defects in manufactured products. This not only improves product quality but also reduces waste and rework.

7. AI-powered systems are being used to optimize supply chains. Machine learning algorithms analyze demand patterns, inventory levels, and market trends to forecast demand and adjust production schedules accordingly. This helps reduce excess inventory, avoid shortages, and improve overall supply chain efficiency.

8. AI enables greater flexibility in manufacturing by allowing for more personalized and customized products. This trend toward mass customization is helping manufacturers and contractors meet changing consumer demands.

Don’t forget the Human Factor in All This In a word of caution regarding AI’s advancements in manufacturing and construction, Paul Gibbons told the CLFMI meeting attendees that AI is likely to displace as many as 300 to 400 million jobs (globally) in the next five years. On the brighter side, AI will also create as many as 75-100 million

new jobs globally over the same period. There are several points that are concerning, especially about how AI affects a person’s livelihood, how tightly-knit businesses will be affected, and AI’s potential for nefarious uses. We will all be hearing and seeing more about AI and its impact on our industry in the coming months and years. We can only hope that we learn to maximize the benefits of this new world order and minimize the ways it is misused.

“We’re so excited for customers to start receiving Accoya batches manufactured in Tennessee, which allows us to provide faster delivery and enhance reliability and service,” says Rod Graf, general manager of Accoya USA. “The production team is well set to produce Accoya to the same high-performance standards the market is accustomed to.”

Accoya demand has been growing in North America, and the product has been specified for some high-profile projects, including the zero-carbon Marisol Malibu, the restoration of the Minnesota State Capitol, and the Rivington Hotel, Manhattan.

As part of the joint venture, Accsys leverages Eastman’s worldclass acetyl production capabilities to produce its Accoya wood products. This supports the recycling of acetyls and enables a closed-loop system, reducing emissions and ensuring circularity. This adds to Accoya’s strong environmental credentials, which are Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold.

Accoya wood is manufactured and tested not to visibly swell, shrink, or distort, making it ideal for windows, doors, decking, and siding. Accoya offers a 50-year above-ground and 25-year in-ground and freshwater warranty.

Simpson Strong-Tie Employees Participate in “Do What You Can Day,” the Company’s Annual Day of Service

Simpson Strong-Tie, the leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, hosted its ninth annual “Do What You Can Day,” a day dedicated to giving back to the community, in August.

More than 1,000 Simpson Strong-Tie employees in North America participated in various activities benefiting local communities. The company’s signature activity for the day was assembling mentor kits for volunteers with the ACE Mentor Program, an organization dedicated to helping high school students pursue careers in the building industry. Simpson StrongTie is a national sponsor of the ACE Mentor Program of America. Seven of the company’s largest North American facilities contributed more than 845 volunteer hours and $28,300 worth of volunteer time, assembling nearly 950 kits in all.

Other company facilities engaged in other projects to help their specific communities, including raising funds benefiting a local food bank in the aftermath of the Maui fires, food collection and sorting, and more.

Do What You Can Day is a celebration of and commitment to Simpson Strong-Tie founder Barclay Simpson’s principle of giving back to others. As Barc himself expressed this principle, “We’re all connected in some way and are all part of a greater community. ... Look for small ways to give back every day. Help out your neighbor, make time for others, do what you can.”

“We’re very proud of our employees’ commitment to Give Back, one of our nine core company values, as exemplified by their participation in Do What You Can Day,” says Simpson Strong-Tie president and CEO Mike Olosky. “Being able to tie our main company activity to our support of the ACE Mentor Program only made it that much more meaningful. We look forward every year to this dedicated day of service to our various communities.”

Hickory Dickory Decks Expands into the United States

Hickory Dickory Decks, a leading custom deckbuilding company, has expanded into the U.S. market with the signing of a franchisee in the Cincinnati area. The company plans on adding another 20 U.S. franchises in 2025 and expects all locations to be served through established U.S. supply chains and brands.

As Hickory Dickory Decks nears saturation into every corner of Canada, the deck-building franchiser is finally ready to turn its sights on the United States. “We’re almost sold out in Canada,” explains CEO Tom Jacques. “In three years, we won’t have any territories left. It’s time to go into the U.S.”

This spring, the company signed brothers Nathan and Brinton Ricke of Middletown, OH., to open Hickory Dickory Decks Cincinnati. “As brothers with diverse backgrounds spanning paramedic work, landscaping and warehouse work, we’re passionate about building and caring for people. With a combined love for crafting beautiful decks, we chose to join Hickory Dickory Decks for its reputation and premium materials,” the Rickes said.

According to Jacques, the key to its expansion strategy is focusing on creating and maintaining strong relationships with new franchisees. This will

include investment in marketing and branding initiatives while providing the excellent support that they are known for to their network of franchise owners. Through these efforts, Hickory Dickory Decks is determined to become a leading and preferred choice for homeowners looking for quality designed and built low-maintenance decks.

The one primary difference with how U.S. franchise will operate is that in Canada, the builders purchase the bulk of their materials through the franchiser’s own supply company.

Jacques expects the U.S. locations to be served through established U.S. supply chains and brands.

“After more than 35 years in the decking industry, we are excited to embark on this new

chapter and look forward to the journey ahead as we expand into the United States,” Jacques says. “This expansion underscores our commitment to global growth and our belief in the strength of the American market. We look forward to bringing our expertise, innovation, and dedication to excellence to serve customers in the U.S.”

Product Diversity in Commercial Fence Contracting

Many companies that grew during the boom of the residential fence industry during COVID are now navigating obtaining new business in commercial markets as the residential market softens. There are a lot of things to consider when taking that step. Perhaps one of the most important is being ready to address product diversity with commercial projects.

Most residential fence installation companies are be focused on a particular product. Commercial work can throw a huge wrench into that strategy; you will often be called to bid and install products you may have never dealt with before, or even have requests to install items outside of fence like benches or site amenities. Commercial work is all about relationships, and if you want to be the installer of choice for your market you must diversify and provide value to those general contractors and construction managers.

There is more product diversity in the fence industry today than ever before. Specification groups have identified over 25 layers of functionality for fence. Safety and security are paramount. This has created tremendous innovation and new products in the marketplace. As you move into the commercial markets here are some things you can do to ensure you are ready to deal with the diverse products of the fence industry.

1) Learn about the new products and trends. Attend FENCETECH and other tradeshows and conferences. Talk to your distributors and find out what sort of projects and products they are seeing. Let them know you are thinking about branching out into commercial. Whether a manufacturer or distributor, they are ready to help you be successful. By helping you get it right, it helps them grow their business, too! Suppliers are there to share their new products and help you successfully install them.

2) Talk to your local general contractor or construction manager. You can talk to potential customers and find out what type of projects are on the horizon and what types of products they are using. They want competitive bids and more options for support and installation for their teams. They

will help you navigate upcoming projects, expectations of performance, and previous challenges they have had with commercial fence installations.

3) Talk to manufacturers. If you find a trend in your market identify what the small differences are in the products and their installation. Identify the key contacts, costs, methods, and requirements before you investigate bidding. Make sure to have options yourself when bidding this work.

4) Understand installation before you bid. You may have already installed a product from a manufacturer but are being called to bid on a product from a different manufacturer. Make sure to review their installation process as you may need different equipment or skills. Don’t make a mistake in thinking that everything is included. Many manufacturers offer free installation training for their products.

5) Find a mentor. Whether a hired consultant or a friendship with an owner of an established successful commercial fence company, there are many out there ready to help. Education is expensive; you can learn the hard way by making mistakes, or work with those who have the wisdom and experience to help guide you to success.

6) Embrace diverse products. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. As the needs for end users continue to change, the product will change as well. If you are prepared to handle the entire scope, you will become a more valued asset to those general contractors, and

they will be more likely to call you for future bidding opportunities.

Fencers are some of the most capable contractors in the construction industry. We must perform on multiple levels of ability. By broadening your team’s capability to install existing and new fence product innovation, you’ll continue to expand your company’s presence in your market resulting in increased business.

With nearly 40 years of experience in the fence industry, Robert Miller is president of Imperial Professional Consulting specializing in the perimeter security industry. He is committed to lifelong learning to ensure that the latest trends and standards of the industry are being utilized for complete and effective perimeter security solutions.

Management Corner HOW MANAGERS CAN BETTERManage FRUSTRATION

Frustration—a complex mix of anger, disappointment, and annoyance—is an inherent part of being a manager. Whether it’s dealing with tight deadlines, managing team dynamics, negotiating with customers or navigating unexpected challenges, the pressures of leadership can often lead to heightened stress levels.

Finding effective ways to release pent-up frustration is crucial for maintaining not only your own well-being but also the productivity and morale of your team. Here are some practical strategies tailored for business managers to manage and release frustration.

Breathing Exercises. When you’re facing a stressful situation, your breathing may become rapid and shallow, exacerbating your frustration. Regulating your breath can help you regain composure and clarity. Try this technique: inhale deeply for 5-6 seconds, pause, then exhale slowly for 6-7 seconds. This simple exercise can increase oxygen flow to your brain, promoting calmness and better decision-making.

Physical Activity. Physical activity is a powerful tool for managing stress and frustration. Engaging in regular exercise can help you release builtup tension and improve your mood, making it easier to tackle your work challenges with a clear mind. It’s essential to carve out time for physical activity, whether it’s a quick run, a workout session at the gym, or even a brisk walk around your office building. Exercise not only boosts your energy but also helps you approach problems with renewed focus and creativity, ultimately benefiting your leadership and decision-making skills.

Constructive Venting. It’s important to find appropriate outlets for venting your frustrations. Holding onto negative emotions can cloud your judgment and affect your interactions with your team. Take time to speak with a trusted colleague or mentor about your frustrations—this can be

a healthy way to process and release tension. However, it’s crucial to keep these conversations brief and solution-oriented. If you prefer a more private approach, journaling can be an effective method for organizing your thoughts and gaining perspective on the situation.

Productive Distractions. Sometimes, stepping away from a problem is the best way to manage your frustration. Engaging in a focused activity that takes your mind off work, such as reading, solving puzzles, walking your dog or spending time with family, can help you reset. This brief mental break allows you to return to your tasks with a fresh outlook, improving your ability to manage complex situations. Additionally, enjoying your favorite entertainment—whether it’s music, a movie, or another hobby—can provide a much-needed escape, allowing you to return to your management role with renewed energy.

As a manager and leader of a team, managing frustration effectively is key to maintaining a positive work environment and achieving long-term success. Try incorporating these strategies into your daily routine to help keep your emotions in check, improve your decision-making abilities, and enhance your ability to lead your team with confidence and resilience.

Standard Guide for Fences for Above-Ground and In-ground Skate Park Facilities

Skate parks, both above-ground and in-ground, provide unique recreational opportunities for communities. However, these spaces also pose potential risks to both participants and spectators. ASTM Designation: F2698 − 08 addresses these concerns by establishing guidelines for fencing and barriers around skate parks. This standard guide outlines the minimum requirements for fence construction to ensure safety and security in skate park facilities.

Protection of Participants: One of the primary purposes of this standard is to protect skate park participants from outside interference. Fences help prevent unauthorized access, ensuring that only individuals familiar with the risks and requirements of the park can use it. By creating a controlled environment, the standard reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by unexpected entries from pedestrians, cyclists, or other non-participants.

Prevention of Unauthorized and Unsupervised Use: Skate parks are designed for specific activities, and unauthorized or unsupervised use by individuals unfamiliar with the park can lead to serious injuries. This guide emphasizes the importance of proper fencing to deter individuals from entering the park when it is not supervised, especially during off-hours. The goal is to mitigate the risk of harm to those who may unknowingly engage in activities without understanding the hazards present.

Protection from Falls: For in-ground skate parks, falls into the area can be particularly dangerous, especially for those who are unaware of the depth or layout of the park. The standard requires

appropriate fencing to prevent accidental falls into these spaces, ensuring the safety of both users and passersby.

Spectator Safety: Skateboarding and similar extreme sports involve high-speed maneuvers that can be unpredictable. This standard recognizes the need to protect spectators from potential injuries caused by errant skateboards or other equipment. By implementing barriers that separate spectators from the action, the risk of accidents is minimized, creating a safer environment for everyone involved.

COMPLIANCE AND STANDARDS

The Importance of ASTM Designation: F2698 − 08 also incorporates references to various ASTM specifications related to fencing materials and construction, including:

Chain-Link Fence Fabric (A392, A491, F668, etc.): These specifications provide guidelines for the materials used in constructing durable and protective chain-link fences.

Wood and Related Materials (F537): For skate parks opting for wood barriers, this standard offers design and fabrication guidance.

Ornamental Fences (F2408, F2589): These specifications outline the use of ornamental fences, which can offer both aesthetic appeal and functional protection.

TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITIONS

The standard provides clear definitions to ensure consistent interpretation across different projects. For example, "fence" is defined as a barrier that surrounds and obstructs access to the skate park, which could include materials such as chain link, wood, ornamental fencing, or PVC extrusions.

ASTM Designation: F2698 − 08 is essential for ensuring that skate parks are both functional and safe. By adhering to these guidelines, park designers, builders, and operators can create environments that protect participants, deter unauthorized use, and ensure spectator safety. As skateboarding and extreme sports continue to grow in popularity, standards like these play a crucial role in supporting the safe development and operation of these facilities.

Jac Whitmire

NATIONAL SALES MANAGER, DOORKING

Having been in sales since 2000, Jac Whitmire is a leader in the industry.

Knowing that a “quick sale” doesn’t usually turn into a lifelong customer, Whitmire is focused on solving problems. In doing so, he’s soared to the top and made a lot of friends along the way. Learn more about how he does it and the unexpected way he got into the door and gate industry.

WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER PATH?

I’ve been the national sales manager with DoorKing since 2018. Prior to that, I was the Southwest regional sales manager and covered Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Las Vegas and El Paso since I started with the company in 2006.

I started in the industry in 2000 when I was hired by Miller Edge in the Tempe, Arizona, office. That position encompassed a wide range of duties including outside sales and branch management.

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL WITH DOORKING?

I oversee all sales within the United States, while our sales director oversees international sales. We have 16 regional sales managers throughout the US that report to me.

Additionally, I am involved in helping shape the direction the company takes with new products and new technology. I travel extensively with the regional managers to keep in touch with our distribution and installation partners. My

favorite part of my job is spending time with our customers, many of whom have become great friends.

WAS A SALES CAREER SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS ENVISIONED FOR YOURSELF?

I graduated from college with a degree in Radio and Television Broadcast Arts. Yes, that’s a degree! My goal was to work behind the scenes since I am often told I have a face for radio!

I was fortunate to work at a local TV station in San Francisco in the news and public affairs department, researching guests for the daily talk show. It was fun but I didn’t find it fulfilling. Also, the TV industry pays poorly because there are so many people who want to get in the industry.

While I was growing up, I worked in my father’s retail business and enjoyed talking to people and selling. A few twists and turns in the road of life, and I wound up working in consumer electronics sales for seven years. I left that industry in Northern California to move to Arizona in 1995. A few more twists and turns, and I wound up working for an automotive aftermarket company that just happened to share a dock with Miller Edge. Over time, I met Flossie Miller, daughter of Norman Miller, the founder of Miller Edge. Many discussions led to me leaving automotive aftermarket and becoming part of the door and gate industry. It’s the best career decision I could have made.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT SALES?

So many of my coworkers and customers have become like family. We know each other’s families; we have endured the grief of loss and celebrated life’s incredible moments together.

For me, sales is helping people solve a problem; partnering with good, hard-working people to create a positive outcome that makes everybody some money and satisfies the client.

My approach is: this is a marathon, not a sprint. I’ve never been interested in a quick sale; in fact, if we don’t make the right product for what your customer is looking for, I will let you know. No one wins when they sell the wrong product to the customer.

As a manager, I never have all the answers and I never pretend that I do. What I strive to do is create synergy, stay positive and support the regional sales managers. My goal is to answer them the same day when they have a question so they can respond to their customer. I created a program called Heavy Hitters for the regional sales managers that meet certain performance criteria. This may sound illogical, but sales is not one of the criteria for the program. Many times, product is bought through sales channels that are not in a regional sales manager’s sales district, so they may work very hard to develop a new customer, or help design a large system, but they don’t get credit for it. These criteria are internal measurements they can control.

I work with a hardwood bat company to design beautiful, full sized baseball bats with sales manager’s names engraved. I present these to those Heavy Hitters at the year-end sales meeting and

The bat awarded to the 2022 Heavy Hitter, Dan Bembridge.
DKS Smart Gate Controller allows operation from a smart phone.

the regional sales managers are always incredibly proud to receive their award. It’s a highlight of the event. I strive to create the type of environment that recognizes people’s accomplishments and the hard work they put in.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT DOORKING AS A COMPANY?

The commitment from our owners is inspiring. DoorKing was founded in 1948 by M.K. “Rich” Richmond. One of Rich’s sons, Tom, is our company president to this day, and one of his daughters, Suzie, is also actively involved in the company. Additionally, we have a third owner, Patrick, who oversees engineering.

These are three of the nicest people you will ever meet, and they are extremely dedicated to their employees as well as this industry. They have made a massive financial investment to ensure that our products are still made in Inglewood, California.

We have employees who have worked for DoorKing for 40 years. No one, not even the owners, has reserved parking, which seems funny to say except parking is always in short supply at corporate; after all, this is Southern California! This reflects the mentality of our owners and upper management. We are a team, a true family. Sometimes we argue like family, but it comes from a place of caring for one another and for this amazing company. I am always very proud to wear the DKS logo!

GATE SAFETY IS TOP OF MIND IN THE FENCE INDUSTRY. WHAT DOES DOORKING DO TO HELP BOLSTER SAFETY WITH YOUR PRODUCTS AND SALES?

DoorKing works diligently on multiple levels to spread the word about UL325/ASTMF2200. One successful aspect has been the in-person and online classes we offer for architects through

our program that is approved by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). This program makes architects aware of the potential injuries, or worse, that can happen with poorly designed gate systems. The bottom line is we want architects to be familiar with the standard and to spec it. Ignoring the standard can not only lead to tragic situations but also, there is a strong

potential for liability for the installing dealer, any dealer that services the gate system, the distributor, the manufacturer, and so on.

DoorKing also holds training seminars throughout the year in various markets across the country and the UL/ASTM standard is always mentioned, plus the working gate operators in the room all utilize entrapment protection devices.

Like most manufacturers, our gate operators all comply with the UL325 standard, and our manuals reflect that. We are very pro-education and are always willing to help any dealer that has questions about the standard.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE WORK/LIFE BALANCE?

I travel two to three weeks of each month; honestly, it’s been a struggle at times. My amazing wife of 25 years, Anne, really did a remarkable job of raising two kids and earning her master’s degree while I spent so much time on the road. We look back now and laugh; even we can’t believe we pulled it off.

Now our kids are 24 and 19, both are incredible, caring human beings and we’re immensely proud of them. These days, work/

life balance is easier since the kids are doing well and independent; we just have two crazy dogs that create havoc from time to time. Anne and I work hard on spending as much time together as possible. We’ve made a pact to not exchange gifts; we are more interested in attending concerts, traveling, spending time with the kids, etc. Monday through Friday is busy but Saturday and Sunday, we prioritize each other.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

I am an avid photographer; I enjoy focusing on landscapes and wildlife. I just returned from a week on Kodiak Island, Alaska photographing the Kodiak bears, bald eagles, puffins, foxes and so much of what Mother Nature has to offer.

In 2021, five DoorKing employees, including me, were able to take part in the U.S. Navy Distinguished Visitor program which involved taking a tilt-rotor Osprey from San Diego to approximately 100 miles off the coast and land aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72. I took some photo equipment and was able to photograph military jets launching and landing on deck. We spent 24 hours on the ship; truly one of the highlights of my adult life.

5 Common Myths about Leadership in Our Industry

Leadership is often surrounded by misconceptions that can prevent people and organizations from reaching their full potential. These myths perpetuate outdated notions about what it means to be a leader, often discouraging individuals who don’t fit traditional molds. However, research has shown that leadership is more flexible, inclusive, and accessible than many believe.

Let’s debunk some myths!

Myth 1: Some People are Born Leaders

One of the most persistent myths is that leadership is an inherent quality—you either have it, or you don’t. While some individuals may naturally possess traits such as charisma or confidence, leadership is a competency that can be developed. Research from the Center for Creative Leadership shows that effective leadership comes from experience, education, and self-awareness, not just inherent traits. According to the study, 70% of leadership skills are learned through job experiences, while 20% come from mentoring and coaching, and only 10% are innate abilities. The takeaway? Anyone can become a strong leader through intentional learning.

Myth 2: Leadership Is Defined by Your Role

Many people assume that leadership is tied to an individual’s position within an organization. The belief is that if you don’t hold a high-ranking job, you aren’t a leader. However, leadership is less about formal authority and more about influence. Research conducted by Deloitte shows that organizations with a culture of “distributed leadership”—where leadership is encouraged at all levels—perform better than those with rigid hierarchies. Leadership is about inspiring and guiding others, which can be done at any level in an organization. Everyone has the potential to lead, regardless of their title.

Myth 3: Leaders Go It Alone

The image of the solitary leader, making decisions without input from others, is outdated. Today’s leadership is highly collaborative. A study published in the Harvard Business Review emphasizes the importance of collective leadership, where leaders engage with their teams, rely on diverse perspectives, and make decisions collaboratively. Modern leadership acknowledges that no one person has all the answers. Leaders who seek input from others not only make better decisions, but also foster a culture of trust and innovation.

Myth 4: Leaders Must Always Be in Charge

Another myth is that leaders must always be the dominant, commanding presence in the room. This belief feeds into the stereotype that leadership equates to command and control. However, research suggests that the most successful leaders know when to step back and allow others to take the lead. A study from Stanford University shows that empowering employees and distributing responsibility leads to better team performance and higher job satisfaction. Effective leaders delegate, listen, and empower their teams, understanding that their role is not to control but to facilitate success through others.

Myth 5: Leaders Must Come Up Through the Ranks

The belief that leaders must have spent years working their way up through an organization is another myth that limits organizations. While experience is valuable, it is not the only path to leadership. Research from Korn Ferry reveals that organizations benefit when they promote individuals based on leadership competencies rather than tenure. Leadership potential is not determined by how long someone has been at

a company but by their ability to innovate, and inspire others.

These common myths about leadership can prevent people from realizing their full potential as leaders. Leadership is not about being born with certain traits or holding a specific title; it’s about influence, collaboration, and adaptability. By challenging these myths, we can redefine what it means to be a leader and create an organization where leaders develop and thrive.
