Half a century. Do you know how hard it is for a business to survive 50 years? Only 36 percent of them make it to their 10th birthday. But none of this would be possible without the support of our customers, vendors and employees. In September, we had a company picnic to celebrate this milestone. During the event, we honored the 50 people (pictured) who had been with us the longest. Number 50, Greg Lawson, now part of our purchasing team, started in 1996, working in the Hardware department. Number two is Barry Warriner, right in the middle of the picture on the front row. He started in the summer of 1985 in Shipping and is still there, 39 years later. Of course #1 is Terry Stephens, our founder and fearless leader!
These 50 and every other employee work with a singular purpose: To provide consistently superior service to our 6700 plus customers. From that first day in 1974 until today, we remain your “One-Stop” source for all your fencing needs. Thank you for being part of our journey and success!

A good work boot is more than just a piece of footwear—it's essential for safety, comfort, and performance on the job. With long hours spent on rough, uneven terrain, often in harsh weather conditions, proper work boots provide necessary protection against potential hazards like sharp tools, heavy materials, or slippery surfaces.
Georgia Boot has introduced their new Durbland Edge collection of work boots. Crafted from rugged full-grain leather, this waterproof work boot features Georgia Boot’s best-selling AMP Insole and DuraBlend Midsole for exceptional comfort. Built tough with heat, chemical, abrasion, and slip-resistant Carbo-Tec rubber outsoles and an ergonomic safety toe that meets ASTM standards, this boot provides both protection and comfort.
“From landscape to hardscape to do-it-yourself projects, workers depend on their footwear for all-day comfort, performance and safety,” says Libby Hosler, marketing manager at Georgia Boot. “As we introduce new collections, like Durablend Edge, Georgia Boot looks to incorporate features and technologies that keep workers secure on the job, while at the same time making sure we can offer our products at competitive price points.”
This Durablend Edge style is offered in a 10-inch brown pull-on boot and a 6-inch lace-up boot. Each is made with cement construction and is equipped with a fiberglass shank for added support. The outsole is dual-density EVA and Carbo-Tec rubber, which has excellent heat, chemical, abrasion, and slip-resisting qualities.
Hosler adds that the alloy toe cap on these lightweight work boots is ergonomically designed to give the toes a better range of motion. These boots meet ASTM F2413 classification.

The global wood coatings market size is estimated to grow by $3.62 billion by 2028, according to Technavio, a leading global technology research and advisory company.
The market is estimated to grow at compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 5.27% during the forecast period. The demand for wood coatings is on the rise in developing countries, driven by advancements in coating technology and an increasing preference for high-performance solutions.
Innovations in coating technology have enhanced the performance and longevity of these coatings, meeting the evolving demands of the market. The growth in urbanization and infrastructure projects further amplifies the demand for quality wood coatings that protect against weathering and enhance the appearance of wood surfaces. As economies expand, so does the requirement for advanced coatings that offer superior protection and finish, highlighting a significant trend toward sustainable and efficient wood treatment solutions.
The wood coatings market encompasses a range of protective finishes designed to enhance and safeguard the beauty of wooden surfaces. These coatings include varnishes, stains, paints, and sealants, which provide appearance enhancement while shielding against moisture damage and environmental influences. Transparent coatings allow the wood's texture and grain to show through, while opaque coatings provide solid color.
Aesthetics and nanotechnology drive innovation in the market, with UV-curable and water-based coatings gaining popularity However, stringent regulatory standards on use of certain chemicals in wood coatings poses a challenge.
Wood coating manufacturers are focusing on using sustainable and renewable raw materials to reduce environmental impact. This includes bio-based ingredients, recycled materials, and by-products from other industries.
Certifications and standards, such as cradle-to-cradle certifications or eco-labels, provide third-party verification of environmental performance. Adherence to these certifications demonstrates commitment to sustainability and circularity, driving growth in the global wood coatings market.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are organic chemicals released as gases from products like stains, paints and sealants. VOCs are produced when solvents in these products evaporate, emitting harmful vapors that contribute to environmental pollution and health risks. These solvents help products spread, dry faster, and penetrate wood. When used on fences, decks, or log cabins, VOCs can pose risks to both applicators and homeowners by contributing to air pollution.
Outdoor wood care professionals often apply these products to large areas, increasing their exposure. It’s crucial for these professionals to understand the risks and select the right products, as VOC exposure can significantly impact health. The most sensitive indicator of toxic effects of solvents like Stoddard solvent is its impact on the nervous system. Acute exposure can lead to dizziness, headaches, and impairments in neurological function, while chronic exposure may cause more severe outcomes like memory deficits and cerebral atrophy (ATSDR).
For applicators working in outdoor settings, VOC exposure can be an ongoing concern. Although outdoor ventilation reduces some intensity, VOCs can still cause short-term health effects like dizziness and irritation. Long-term exposure to high levels could lead to more severe health problems, making it important for professionals to be aware of the products they use.
Understanding the VOC content I key to reducing health risks. With growing awareness around health and safety, manufacturers like EXPERRT Professional Wood Care have developed ultra low-VOC and VOC-compliant formulas. These products deliver high-quality results while being safer to use. By choosing ultra low-VOC products, applicators can work more comfortably and mitigate potential health hazards over time.
Homeowners who invest in outdoor wood care expect products that enhance the appearance of their decks and fences while also aligning with their health and environmental concerns. VOC emissions can drift into the surrounding environment, contributing to air pollution. For families – especially those with children, pets or individuals with respiratory conditions – this can be concerning, as exposure to VOCs around the homer can affect indoor and outdoor air quality.
Using ultra low-VOC products allows homeowners to minimize environmental impact without compromising durability or aesthetics. These products ensure that homeowners can enjoy the beauty of their outdoor spaces without worrying about air quality. Applicators who use ultra low-VOC products gain a competitive edge over those using higher VOC alternatives, offering a safer option for health and the environment.
VOC regulations have become increasingly stringent, particularly in areas with stricter environmental standards. Manufacturers are responding by creating products that coply with these regulations without sacrificing performance. By choosing VOC-compliant products, both outdoor applicators and homeowners can ensure that they are staying ahead of changing laws while promoting safer, more sustainable practices.
At EXPERT Professional Wood Care, the focus is on developing low-VOC wood stains and sealants that deliver both performance and safety. As Caleb Roth, CEO and founder of EXPERT Professional Wood Care explains, “Low VOC coatings can still be up to 25% VOC, which pose a significantly higher risk of exposure to carcinogens. Ultra low-VOC stains like our EXPERT Stain & Seal Pecan SemiTransparent boast a 7 g/l VOC rating, which is less than %. That’s almost 25 times less exposure to cancer-causing agents compared to other stains in the category.”
By using products with ultra low-VOCs, outood wood care professinals and homeowners alike can make safer choices. Ultra low-VOC products offer peace of mind, knowing they are not only protecting wood but also minimizing harmful emissions. For more information or to explore ultra low-VOC options, speak with an EXPERT Wood Care Ambassador at 1-833-4-THE-EXPERT.

When it comes to outdoor building projects, choosing the right materials can make all the difference between a structure that lasts a season and one that stands the test of time. Whether you're building a deck, fence, or any other outdoor feature, the durability of your wood is key. That's where ProWood treated lumber comes in.
ProWood Pressure-Treated Lumber offers unmatched protection against the elements, ensuring your project stays strong and beautiful for years. Treated with state-of-the-art preservatives, ProWood resists rot, decay, and termites— problems that often plague untreated wood. This makes it an ideal choice for both quality and long-lasting performance.
“ProWood doesn’t just offer durability; it also provides peace of mind, knowing your investment is built to last, says Grace Bilbrough, director of marketing for ProWood. “Any investment into your home’s environment should be carefully considered. Outdoor living design is becoming more about creating holistic, multi-functional spaces that boost curb appeal and add resale value to the home.”
She says the trend today for homeowners surrounds being much more intentional about their outdoor living design ideas and inspiration. “They’re taking the time to do a lot more research into products and builders, and carefully contemplating their decisions. These days, it’s all about getting things done right the first time, and ProWood can deliver that level of value and results.”
Bilbrough adds that one of the most exciting aspects of current trends in wood fencing is homeowners expressing their individual aesthetics in their outdoor spaces. While pairing traditional codes of fence and home styles is timeless, we’ve seen homeowners take more creative liberty in recent years.”
One thing that hasn’t changed is lumber’s greatest enemy: biological attack destruction by termites, fungi and marine borers as well as damage from rain, sun and wind. “Thanks to over 50 years of research, ProWood can stand up to every threat for decades of use,” explains Bilbrough. “Not all lumber is the same. Our team takes great pride in crafting treated lumber in a wide selection of grades to suit virtually any outdoor project. Our unique and innovative treatments process utilizing MCA (micronized copper solution) is
an effective and reliable protectant against rot, fungal decay, and termites in above-ground and ground-contact applications.”
She says for a long time, CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) was the primary wood preservative. More recently, preservative pressure-treating manufacturers switched to ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary). “The new generation of pressure-treated wood uses MCA (micronized copper azole) as a preservative. This method enables ProWood to stand up against termite damage and fungal decay,” she explains. “One added benefit of ProWood’s copper-based preservatives is that they offer real protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. UV exposure is less damaging to these products than to untreated wood.”
And although ProWood pressure-treated lumber is protected against rot (fungal decay) and termites, Bilbrough says periodic maintenance must be performed to maximize protection against weathering. This maintenance will let you enjoy your new outdoor project for many years.
In some cases, ProWood treated lumber has water repellent already applied during the pressure treating process. The end tag on the lumber will indicate whether a factory-applied water repellent has been added, and help you understand when to apply a topical wood sealer.
“Continuous changes in weather conditions are extremely harsh on your wood fence and other pressure-treated projects,” says Bilbrough. “Your maintenance should be geared toward preventing problems caused by water absorption and water loss, mildew growth and wood discoloration caused by the sun’s ultra-violet light. In addition, keep in mind that areas where debris, including mulch and overgrown vegetation, can accumulate over months or years can simulate ground contact conditions. Factoring this into the design of the project and selection of material on the front end can pay dividends over the life of the project.”
Although ProWood provides a surface that is easier for paints to cover, it is not recommended or required. Bilbrough says ProWood does not need protection from the elements, but if your decorative decisions call for paint, make sure the wood is dry before application. Pour some water over the
surface. If it beads, wait; if it seeps into the wood, it's ready to paint. When it comes to protecting outdoor wood, Bilbrough says conventional multi-coat paint systems or varnishes often fall short, leading to disappointing results and requiring extensive prep work like scraping and sanding before repainting. Instead, she suggests opting for an outdoor wood sealer. Sealers provide water repellency and a hint of color without creating a thick surface layer. They also allow any remaining moisture in treated lumber to gradually escape after application, ensuring long-lasting protection.
“Your outdoor projects deserve durability and protection for a lifetime,” adds Bilbrough. “That’s why ProWood lumber is backed with an industry leading lifetime limited warranty.”

Staining wood fences and decks brings out the beauty of the lumber and enhances the overall look of the project. Most of the time, though, staining at the job site can be a hassle and prone to weather-related delays.
“That’s why I invented StainTrac, a lumber staining machine,” says Duane Voss, vice president of StainTrac.
“Give the nastiest and toughest job to the laziest employee and he will invent the easiest solution!”
Voss, an Army veteran and fabricator, created StainTrac and teamed up with long-time friend Cliff Richison, who has spent many years in the fencing industry, to offer StainTrac worldwide.
Once contractors purchase the machine, they often recoup their costs quickly, due to increased efficiency. Each board is sprayed with stain, then passes through nap rollers to remove excess and evenly spread stain to all surfaces. Excess stain drains back into a bucket below and is re-circulated, so there’s virtually zero waste.
It can be used on lumber for fences, decks, pergolas, or other outdoor wood construction projects. The lumber can be up to 8” wide and 8” deep, and it can stain 5 – 10 boards per minute.
StainTrac eliminates weather-related delays, so contractors can stay on schedule. Also, there is no fear of overspray getting on vehicles and structures, so liability is greatly reduced.
“Contractors can cut their liability in half with prestaining lumber in-house rather than staining at the job site,” says Richison, president of StainTrac. “If you don’t have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to have time to fix it right?”
Richison is also the owner of Arrow Fence of Tulsa, Oklahoma for over 45 years. Richison and his oldest son, Brett, also own FenceTrac Fence Systems.

A fence built in any material is a significant investment. Ensuring it looks great and lasts a long time, is paramount.
For wood fences, the wood’s natural oils, along with pressure-treatments, provide good protection, but neither will last the life of a wood fence. New and existing wood fences are impacted by numerous common factors – environmental elements, installation, fence maintenance, and property maintenance. Wind, sun, rain, snow – hot and cold temperatures – all impact wood condition. Moisture promotes organic growth, causing wood to swell and twist.
Temperature and wind changes cause wood to crack, warp, and cup. The sun’s UV rays silver wood and cause extreme dryness, weakening wood over time. In addition, most wood species are susceptible to dry and wet rot, and insect infestation.
Poor installation, property maintenance damage, and lack of maintenance combine, showing signs of premature aging, and structural integrity losses sooner. While protection from the sources of damage sounds impossible, there are effective preventive measures. Al Martins, Fence Armor director, shares some insight into the factors impacting the longevity of a wood fence and products that can protect this investment.
Unprotected wood is exposed to a myriad of damaging elements – moisture is potentially the most fatal and not limited to specific areas of new or existing fences.
Protecting wood posts above and below the ground-line ensures new posts are given a great start. It's important to know organic matter provides the right atmosphere for oxygen and fungus to thrive. Pressure treatments eventually break down, weakening wood’s defense against rot and decay.
“Employing rot barrier protection in-ground, prevents irreparable damages where they start – within the first six inches below ground line,” says Martins.
He adds that lawncare equipment typically damages the wood membrane, exposing the wood grain within. Adding post protectors to existing wood posts alleviates, or prevents maintenance, water, rot and insect damages – extending the life of existing investments.
“Environmental elements also destroy posts through end-grain-exposure,” Martins explains. “Post caps can prevent damages along of the internal and external post lengths – preventing swelling, cracking, twisting and warping – eroding post strength."
Primarily used to enhance wood’s beauty, stain offers dramatic enhancements to curb appeal and fence styles. And, with regular stain maintenance, a fence’s lifespan increases. “By applying stain you will prohibit premature aging and damage,” says Martins. “It’s arguably worth the effort to prolong a new or existing wood fence’s lifespan.”
Recently revised EPA VOC standards across all 50 states ensure safety targets are kept within >250 g/l. Martins says some stains come in far lower than that. He shares some key points to understand:
• VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, are emitted as gases from certain solids and/or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects.
• VOC emissions last years after application. Known as “gas-off,” this occurs when the sun’s heat warms stained surfaces. Occurring daily, it lessens only as stain ages and degrades. This negatively impacts backyards, neighborhoods, and our atmosphere.
• Choosing lower VOC, high-quality stains ensure a more even color tone and oil distribution. Selfleveling oil-based stains ensure greater coverage with little to no drip lines, lap marks, or back brushing, making stain application a breeze.
• Based on manufacturer recommendations, re-application is required once a year for transparent stains and once every two or three years for semi-solid or semi-solid stains. Most stains recommend a maintenance schedule, including cleaning products that maintain stain quality and function.
Martins says it’s important to always follow stain manufacturer application directions. These may require spraying surrounding porous surfaces with water. Protect greenery, BBQs and outdoor furniture with tarps, as stain may be harmful to these surfaces.
“Regardless of wood age, surface, or species, be sure to research – not all oil-based stains are created equal,” he adds. “Nor will they have the same color offering.”

The American Fence Association has been working diligently on promoting gate safety awareness and education. Together with their industry partners, significant strides have been made. The AFA sends this update of their 2024 initiatives:
OCTOBER 2023: INAUGURAL GATE SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Last October, they launched their first-ever Gate Safety Awareness campaign, receiving broad support and participation from AFA members across the country. This was a pivotal step in raising awareness and promoting best practices for gate safety.
JANUARY: FENCETECH IN NASHVILLE
At FENCETECH 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee, AFA provided several well-attended educational opportunities focused on gate safety. A particularly meaningful moment was the class led by Eric Quanbeck, Alex’s father, who shared his personal story and expertise.
FEBRUARY: NEXT! SUMMIT ON GATE SAFETY
The AFA hosted the virtual NEXT! Summit on Gate Safety, which attracted nearly 100 registrants. The event, featuring Dayna and Eric Quanbeck alongside other industry experts, offered free educational resources to fence professionals and field inspectors. The summit is still available to watch and the downloadable resources can be accessed through the AFA U Online portal on the AFA website, americanfenceassociation.com.
GRASSROOTS EFFORTS
Inspired by these initiatives, a grassroots campaign emerged among several AFA members who took the initiative to share gate safety information and resources with their local communities and schools.
PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HUMMINGBIRD ALLIANCE
Michael Reed, executive director of AFA, has joined the Hummingbird Alliance’s board of directors. The AFA looks forward to continuing their strong partnership with this organization and working together to promote gate safety across the country.
LEGISLATIVE SUCCESSES
Over the course of the year, the AFA has been involved in several legislative initiatives related to gate safety in California, New York, and at the federal level. On August 30, 2024, the first AFA-supported bill was signed into law in New York. This marks a major victory for both AFA and the industry. See the full story on page ??? of this issue.
LOOKING AHEAD: CODE CHANGE PROPOSALS
The AFA Technical Committee has been diligently working on a code change proposal to the International Code Council (ICC). This proposal reflects the changes the AFA is advocating for in California and at the federal level with a focus on the adoption of ASTM 1184, ASTM 900, and ASTM 2200. This committee includes representatives from ASTM, DASMA and UL.
More developments are coming soon. Stay informed by visiting the gate safety page on the AFA website, americanfenceassociation.com.
The American Fence Association and the New York Long Island Chapter announces that New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed S.7731/ A.9888C into law, enhancing pool gate safety across New York. This legislation allows contractors to install pool gate latches according to ASTM standards, creating safer environments for swimmers.
AFA Executive Director Michael Reed thanked Governor Hochul and bill sponsors Assemblymember McDonald and State Senator Gallivan for their support. Mike DeLorenzo, AFA Chapter President Committee Chair Elect praised the law as a major win for New York’s fence companies.
The best way to prevent gate malfunctions and ensure safety is to install them correctly from the start.
“As a leader in the fencing industry, you can make a lifesaving difference by staying informed about proper installation methods as outlined in the ASTM Standard, UL 325, and by keeping up with industry best practices,” explains Catherine Mills-Reynolds, AFA director of government relations and industry standards.
“To support this effort, AFA offers a wide range of courses and educational opportunities designed to enhance your knowledge. We are the only association in the fencing industry providing such comprehensive training. Between now and the end of the year, you can register for several courses that will give you a competitive edge,” she says.
In November, AFA University will be held in both Oklahoma and Texas. Group discounts are available; if three or more employees attend any combination of schools at AFA University, they’ll receive a 10% discount on tuition, which will be applied automatically during registration.
Earning professional certifications such as AFA’s CGAT or CGAD further validates the expertise gained through education and training. By investing in these programs, organizations demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a safer, more professional work environment.
For those unable to travel, or who prefer to work from home, AFA University Online is available, offering a variety of courses, some at no charge.
For a full list of AFA University events, please see the Events listings in this issue.

As someone who has always tried to keep up with the news from around the world, I find myself looking for some commonality in the numerous ways the news is being gathered, as well as the way news is being made.
One of the ever-increasing references I hear is how drones are being used in many situations: natural disasters such as Hurricane Helene, armed conflict such as in the Middle East, high security events such as political gatherings and entertainment venues, and everyday activities such as photography and streaming services.
Drones are also being used in many ways in fencing and other construction projects. I have mentioned a few of these in an earlier article, and here are a few more specific examples of what is being done with these drones in the industry:
• SECURITY OBSERVATION. In addition to adding visual surveillance to jobsites and finished projects, drones are being used to assure the best level of integration of various physical and electronic security systems.
• MAINTENANCE MONITORING. Drones can scan even the largest projects in a short period of time to identify needed maintenance and damage control. Some large solar farms in remote areas contain hundreds of miles of fencing and drone-provided information can shorten response time, reduce the risks to personnel, and assist in identifying the equipment needed to make repairs.
• ONGOING INSPECTIONS. The use of drones allows for detailed inspections of pre- and post-construction sites and can assist in identifying potential problems with grading, digging, underground obstacles, etc.
• BORDER FENCE SUPPORT. Of course, drones are being used to pinpoint human breaches in the border fence system and to aid in rapid response. They can also be used to identify physical damage to the fence itself, caused by either individuals or the tools they use to break through the diverse types of barriers along the border.
• SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT. Being able to observe the tools and materials used on fencing projects in a real-time manner allows companies to supply and re-supply jobsites on an enhanced just-in-time basis.
• JOBSITE SAFETY. Since safety is always priority on any fencing project, the ability to observe potential safety hazards from the air is an additional level of protection drones can add to projects of all types and sizes. This can be especially helpful, and even lifesaving, when used to identify potentially hazardous sites in the chemical and energy industries.
• WORKER PRODUCTIVITY. No, a drone is not merely an “eye in the sky” trying to catch workers goofing off. Drones can spot opportunities to avoid duplication of efforts, identify the best potential ways to rotate teams from one part of a project to another, and allow for better coordination of material deliveries.
As the fencing industry continues to be challenged to be more innovative and technologically up to date, the use of drones and other devices will become commonplace in what has long been a hands-on profession. Manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors have a terrific opportunity to use these new tools to stand out in the crowded fencing marketplace. As executive vice president of

Amid increasing concern related to plastic bag and film recycling, Trex Company is making it easier than ever for Americans to responsibly dispose of plastic film waste. The leading manufacturer of high-performance composite decking and railing is proud to announce the launch of the NexTrex® Plastic Recycling Drop-Off Directory, the country’s only online searchable platform dedicated to connecting eco-minded Americans with Trex recycling partners in their local communities. With locations in all 50 states, the nationwide directory fills a gap in the marketplace, offering a comprehensive resource that empowers individuals to contribute to a greener planet by diverting plastic bag and film waste from landfills and waterways.
“Plastic film is a tricky material that cannot be recycled in curbside bins with other recyclable materials, such as paper, cardboard and glass,” explains Stephanie Hicks, materials and recycling programs manager for Trex Company. “The NexTrex program offers a simple way for people to dispose of flexible plastic waste responsibly and confidently. When you drop off plastic bags and film at a NexTrex recycling location, you know exactly where those materials are going and how they will be used.”
Since first inventing composite decking, Trex has built a successful business from recycled polyethylene (PE) plastic, a core ingredient in its worldfamous composite decking, which is made from up to 95% recycled and reclaimed materials. One of the largest recyclers of PE film in North America, the company reclaims and repurposes more than 300 million pounds of discarded plastic material annually. Among its primary sources are grocery stores and other retailers who partner with Trex to responsibly dispose of shrink wrap, pallet wrap, and other flexible plastic materials used in their operations. More than 10,000 of these stores also serve as public-facing drop-off locations with dedicated bins posted in their stores where local community members can recycle plastic bag and film materials that qualify to be used by Trex. These include everyday items such as grocery/retail bags, produce bags, sandwich bags, case overwrap, plastic wrap from paper towels and toilet paper, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaner bags, bubble wrap and flexible shipping pouches. A full list of qualifying materials can be found at NexTrex.com.
Through the new NexTrex Plastic Recycling Drop-off Directory, people can simply type in their city, state or zip code to find NexTrex recycling partners
User-friendly online search portal makes plastic film recycling more accessible by listing locations across all 50 states.
in their area. The directory currently includes approximately 10,000 drop-off locations across all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. New locations will continue to be added as more retailers join the NexTrex program. The directory site also invites visitors to suggest alternate locations and provide feedback for program improvements.
“This directory reinforces Trex’s involvement in the entire recycling process, from the collection and processing of plastic film to the creation of sustainable outdoor living products,” notes Dave Heglas, senior director, recycled materials, for Trex Company. “Unlike other retail recycling programs, we actively manage the process from start to finish to ensure the plastics that are dropped off at our partner locations successfully make their way to Trex where they are given new life as beautiful and sustainable Trex decking.”
Founded on the principle that value can be derived from discarded materials, Trex has continuously managed plastic recycling programs for the past three decades. Over the past 30 years, the company has diverted more than 5 billion pounds of PE film from landfills and waterways.
“We are proud to be a successful proof-of-concept that, when done properly and mindfully, plastic recycling is absolutely viable and not a myth,” adds Hicks. “Our goal is to make the world a better place one plastic bag at a time.”

by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
As the executive director of the American Fence Association and before that, a decade consulting with business owners and executive leaders from various industries, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a lot of business leaders. When I’ve asked about leadership, one common truth stands out: the core challenges of executive leadership are universal.
Leading a fence business, or a hospital, or a retail chain, comes with similar challenges and responsibilities. Drawing from my own experiences, the insights of retired Proctor & Gamble CEO A.G. Laffley and management scholar Peter Drucker, it’s clear that a leader’s role has four fundamental responsibilities.
Define the Meaningful Outside
One of the leader’s primary responsibilities is to identify what external factors truly matter to the organization. This involves understanding the external environment, including members, customers, partners, and competitors. A successful leader must keep their finger on the pulse of the market and external forces that influence the business, making sure the organization responds and adapts. This external understanding helps to drive the focus and the next core responsibility of leaders.
Perhaps the most critical role is to roles of a leader is shaping and redefining the organization's values and standards into a clear culture. Leaders must continually interpret and communicate values that align with the business's evolving purpose, ensuring these values guide decision-making at every level.
Strategic clarity is crucial to business success, and leaders must continuously evaluate where the organization should focus its efforts. For leaders, this assessment is an ongoing challenge. Good people create new and innovative products and solutions. It's not just about what markets to enter or exit; it’s also about identifying strengths, competitive advantages, and understanding where to devote resources to achieve growth and sustainability. It’s also making the tough decisions about what business to NOT be in.
Leaders must find a balance between managing the business for today and preparing for tomorrow. This involves setting realistic growth targets and using flexible resourcing processes to allocate resources toward short-, mid-, and longterm goals. For any business leader, the ability to navigate this tension is key to driving continuous innovation while maintaining direction and alignment.
In essence, the business leader’s role is to harmonize internal capabilities with external realities. By focusing on these four tasks -- defining the meaningful outside, choosing the right business focus, balancing present and future, and shaping culture -- leaders ensure their organizations not only survive but thrive in a competitive marketplace. This is why I encourage industry leaders to get involved with AFA. These four tasks are part of the value of being a member of AFA. Not only will you get insights on these four leadership responsibilities. You’ll also relate to others who face the same challenges you do.
Michael Reed has been involved with the American Fence Association for eight years, the last two serving as the executive director. Michael loves AFA’s history and culture and believes in the power of associations to solve problems big and small. He’s focused on building an AFA that develops leaders, increases professionalism, and plays a leadership role in our industry's growth and success. His passion is leadership, and he’s currently finishing his doctoral dissertation on trust and leadership development.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.
Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.
John Carber is a problem solver. An avid do-it-yourself person with an engineering mind, he continuously asks why and how.
To house three horses on his property, Carber worked with a fence company to install a new slip board wooden fence and split gates. “Even though we hired a reputable and extremely capable fence company to install, we knew that eventually, gravity would take its toll,” he says. “The gates would sag and detract from an otherwise beautiful fence.” A sagging fence is a real eyesore for the entire property.
Having worked as a fence installer in his 20s, Carber knows the processes and challenges fence industry professionals deal with each day. He began to search for a product in the marketplace and didn’t find what he was looking for. So, as any entrepreneur does, he created what he needed and GateJak, Ultimate Gate Support, was born.
heavy duty all steel construction, powder coated, and zinc plated to offer attractive, long-lasting protection. It comes full assembled with mounting hardware. It supports gates in closed and open positions and anywhere along the path, even if the terrain grade changes. The standard GateJak’s elevating bracket accommodates a change in ground level grade up to 14 inches and GateJak Junior accommodates a change in ground level grade up to 10 inches. GateJak Standard is recommended for large drive gates, ag gates, and commercial gates, and GateJak Junior is recommended for smaller walk gates and residential gates. Both are universally adaptable to either size of the gate. The optional foot bolt add-on allows the GateJak to be anchored into place in a resting position.
A friend made a prototype of what Carber designed. Proudly made in the USA, GateJak mounts easily on wood, metal and vinyl gates. GateJak is high quality, made of
After testing the device for two years, Carber and his wife Amy, began marketing GateJak to the fence industry. “We have always been open to suggestions for improving our product,” he says. “We received valuable feedback from fence professionals, and while participating in the Garden State Jackpot Show in Atlantic City last year and also at FENCETECH ’24 in Nashville.
“Feedback from installers has been great,” Carber says. “GateJak gives contractors an edge when bidding on jobs. Homeowners, farm owners, and business owners have all weighed in with full support. We’ve received 100% positive feedback from consumers since launching. We’re proud that it is made in the USA and we’re supporting American manufacturing and hundreds of employees from American families.”
GateJak is perfect for new gate installations, repair jobs or maintenance of existing gates. Carber also developed the PlumbWedge, a solution for crooked posts. PlumbWedge is used to straighten gate posts prior to mounting the GateJak on the gate. In addition, it’s an excellent tool to straighten mailboxes.
GateJak now has 30 companies, dealers and installers in 14 states. In addition to homes and farms, GateJak has been used on commercial properties, too. “School districts, ski resorts, wineries, retail stores and many others; GateJak corrects sagging gates, reduces repair costs, future maintenance needs and increases usability on their gates,” Carber says.

Do you ever feel you are running in 15 different directions? Working hard but getting nowhere? If so, you and your company could be victims of a dysfunctional organization and lack of a collective corporate mission.
Teamwork is critical to mission success; we can’t do it alone. While working in South America several years ago, I noticed millions of South American leaf cutter ants marching side by side. The line went as far as I could see in both directions, marching up one side of a huge tree and down the other side.
The ants climbing up the tree were not carrying anything, but the ants coming down the other side each carried a piece of a leaf. The natives told me these ants can strip a giant tree clean in only a few days.
As I watched, nothing stopped them. If an object was in their way, they tried to move it together. If that didn’t work, they found another path around, continuing along their way. What a workforce!
This is a prime example of a functional organization. No one had to watch over each ant, motivate or disciple them. They did their individual jobs and together, they accomplished great things. Even though they did not know it, they had a functional organization and a clear mission statement. These are critical components to teamwork.
If the ant lesson doesn’t resonate, consider IBM. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, IBM was the giant in the computer industry. Their mission was to dominate the computing industry worldwide. In those days, that was pretty much limited to banks, schools, government agencies and major corporations.
About that same time, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs went to IBM with an idea that would have dramatically changed IBM’s mission statement. They wanted to build computing systems for everyone. It would mean building smaller computers, but millions of them through mass distribution instead of selective distribution. As we all know, they were turned down.
They went on to establish Microsoft and Apple. Both successful companies had completely different visions, and both visions were drastically different from IBM.
A mission statement is of paramount importance, taking a company in a specific direction.
So, what is yours? Do you want to be a commercial fencing contractor? Or do you want to dominate the residential market? Or maybe a little of both? Do you want a certain product mix? How about price point?
Choose a few ideas and work with them. Once you choose a mission statement, your corporate efforts must be focused in accomplishing that mission. Everyone in the company must understand the mission and be dedicated to completing it. If not, they need to be replaced.
Like the ants in Columbia, teamwork is essential. Even one ant pulling in the wrong direction can derail the entire team effort.
One last thought: mission statements are dynamic. They can change with the times and the passions of corporate leadership but avoid changing too often. It can be confusing to the employees and public.
Best of luck with defining your mission statement. It will make a tremendous difference in your company’s growth and goals. As always, please contact me if I can help.

Delivering constructive criticism is a skill every effective business manager must develop. Done well, it can foster growth, improve performance, and build trust. However, if mishandled, it can lead to resentment, low morale, and even conflict.
Here are some key strategies for providing constructive criticism to employees:
Be Specific and Objective. Vague feedback can be confusing and unhelpful. Instead of saying, “You need to improve your performance,” specify the areas that need attention. For example, “I’ve noticed that your reports often contain errors in data analysis. Let’s work on improving accuracy.”This approach helps employees understand exactly what needs to be improved.
Focus on Behavior, Not Personality. Criticism should target specific behaviors or actions, not the employee’s character. Avoid statements like, “You’re careless,” for example. Instead, you could say, “I’ve observed several mistakes in your recent work. Let’s discuss how we can reduce these types of errors.”This feedback is more professional and task-specific.
Maintain a Positive Tone. The tone of your feedback can significantly impact how it is received. Maintain a positive and encouraging tone, even when discussing areas for improvement. This helps motivate employees to make needed changes.
Use the “Sandwich” Method. Frame criticism between positive comments. Start with a positive observation, then provide the constructive criticism, and end with another positive note. For example, “Your dedication to meeting deadlines is impressive. However, I’ve noticed some inconsistencies in your recent reports. Let’s work on ensuring accuracy. Keep up the great work with your time management!”
Be Timely. Provide feedback as soon as possible after the observed behavior. Delayed criticism loses impact and relevance. Timely feedback helps employees connect the criticism with their actions and understand the importance of making changes promptly.
Encourage Two-Way Communication. Constructive criticism should be a dialogue, not a monologue. Encourage employees to share their perspectives and ask questions. This can provide insights into any challenges they might be facing and foster a collaborative approach to problemsolving.
Offer Support and Solutions. Criticism should come with actionable advice and support. Instead of just pointing out what’s wrong, offer solutions and resources to help the employee improve. For example, “I suggest we schedule a training session on data analysis techniques to help you enhance your skills.”
Follow Up, After providing constructive criticism, follow up with the employee to monitor progress and offer further support if needed. This shows that you are invested in their development and reinforces the importance of the feedback.
By implementing these strategies, business managers can deliver constructive criticism that not only addresses performance issues but also promotes a positive, productive work environment.

VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND OPERATIONS ANTEBELLUM MANUFACTURING with
Working at many levels of the fence industry has given Ed Grause a strong foundation.
As vice president of sales and operations with Antebellum Manufacturing in Florida, he enjoys the camaraderie within the industry. Learn more about what he does and the advice he gives to those looking to grow their career in the fence industry.
WHEN DID YOU JOIN ANTEBELLUM MANUFACTURING?
I have been working at Antebellum for three years but have known the team for almost 10 years. I was hired to run sales and operations and was named vice president of sales and operations when we restructured the management team about a year ago due to our tremendous growth.
WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER PATH PRIOR TO ANTEBELLUM MANUFACTURING?
I have spent my entire career in sales. My first real job in college was selling TV’s and computers at an electronics retailer, and I quickly realized I was pretty good at it.
In the early 2000’s, I began selling aluminum extrusions at a small manufacturer in Ohio. We sold a lot of shapes that were used in the fence industry. A few years later, I landed at Master Halco as a territory sales manager, which was quite the step up.
Working for Master Halco is like going to college for the fence industry. I learned so much during my time there. After that, I worked for a large regional fence contractor in Florida where I met and got to know the team at Antebellum, making the transition there easy.
My career has given me tremendous opportunity to work at many levels of the fence industry. For anyone looking to get into the fence industry, I recommend experience in the three aspects of our business – manufacturing, distribution and contracting – to see which is the best fit for them. I’m so glad I went that route and found my passion.
WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF YOUR JOB?
In my sales capacity, I oversee the outside sales team and drive them for top line sales as well as profit. On my operations side, I am responsible for everything related to the customer experience from customer service and software all the way through the shipping process. My day will vary from working out pricing with a customer to trying to figure out a better way to package a widget. With infinite variation of function, I never get bored doing my job. No two days are alike.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF ANTEBELLUM
We have two major strengths: our manufacturing expertise and our amazing people. Unlike so many other manufacturers, we truly manufacture the products we make, end-to-end and all from domestic sources. We bring in long length lineals and every hole, saw cut, punch, etc. is done in house. We complete that process with one of the best powder coating lines in the country and everything we put out is AAMA 2604. Since we do not rely on any pre-manufactured products, we have been able to keep lead times consistent even when the industry has struggled in the past. In terms of our people, I have never worked for
a team with more talent. Johnathan Farrar, vice president of manufacturing, is my counterpart. He does an unbelievable job of making sure we maintain standards unlike anything I have ever seen in this industry. Our customer service team, which is led by Britany Rowland, is without equal. Not a day goes by that I don’t get a compliment from a customer for their hard work. I could go on and on. Every employee pulls in the same direction. Sales, operations, manufacturing and accounting work seamlessly together to make Antebellum the best it can be. We have about 200 employees, every one of them an asset to the company.
HOW MUCH HAS BUSINESS INCREASED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS?
Everyone in the industry saw tremendous gains during COVID but we have been able to not only maintain those gains but also increase our market share since then.
Earlier this year, we broke ground on our new factory that will open in the first quarter of 2025. This state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility will allow us to continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
“I knew in that moment that I had not only found a leader worth following, but also a place that would fulfill all my career goals.”
WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE AMERICAN FENCE ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS? AND WHY DO YOU FEEL IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE PART OF IT?
—Ed Grause, vice president of sales and operations with Antebellum Manufacturing
I took my seat on the board in January of 2023. The AFA is a great association that drives our industry forward. In this business, it’s important to keep the whole industry in focus and AFA allows you to do that.
One of the best things I can do to help us move forward is to volunteer my time to the AFA and it has paid dividends. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from many leaders in our industry and see different leadership styles. I have also been fortunate to serve under two amazing AFA presidents: Bobby Batchelor and Brad Howard. Both have given their time and talent, and the industry is better off, thanks to them.
DID YOU HAVE A BUSINESS MENTOR WHO HELPED INSPIRE YOU EARLIER IN YOUR CAREER?
My first sales manager was Tim Ambro and he changed the trajectory of not only my career, but my life. Tim is a true intellectual who really thinks through things. He took a brash young man who had little to no idea what he was doing and helped shape my sales skills and my business acumen. He taught me that every action you take needs to be done with a purpose, and that any job worth doing was going to be hard; success is not easy, but in the end, the hard work will pay off. He was right.
WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
I wanted to be the leader of a company that I truly believed in. The mission had to be more than simply growing the top line sales. When I was thinking of coming to work for Antebellum, I asked our CEO Chris Boyd what the mission was for him. I assumed he would say something about profit, but his answer totally caught me by surprise. He said, “I want to be the best employer in the state of Florida.” What an incredible response. I knew, in that moment, that I had not only found a leader worth following, but also a place that would fulfill all my career goals.
WHAT IS A BUSINESS CHALLENGE THAT YOU HAVE FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
All of us in manufacturing must overcome problems every day. I’ve learned that no one should try to do this on an island. Any problem solving begins with collaboration. Bring in your team, your customers, your vendors and anyone else who can help. If you think that you can solve a problem on your own, then you are probably the problem.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE FENCE INDUSTRY?
Our industry is blue-collar driven, which in my opinion, is one of the best things about it. You will buy more BBQ than steak dinners and attend more clay shoots and fishing events than networking mixers. This is an industry that values hard work and results over pedigree.
Most people are good people at heart. I think when we’re young, we feel that most people are out for themselves, but the longer I have been in the industry, I have learned that most people are motivated by good. The AFA proves this everyday with hundreds of volunteers in the chapter doing it for nothing else than to help others and strengthen our industry. A rising tide lifts all boats.
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?
Setting attainable goals for me is a key. I often see people set goals that are either so lofty that achieving them is unrealistic, or so small that there is no challenge. Finding that sweet spot can be tough.
Goals should be ambitious but also varied. Setting a goal for good customer service or timely shipping can be as important as a goal for increased sales and profit. In fact, I believe that setting “non-sales” goals can be the best way to increase sales.
