Celebrating 50 years of Reliable Service & Quality

“ It all started with a single piece of pipe”

In 1974 Terry Stephens had an idea. He knew if he could sell fence products at a competitive price and quickly deliver it to his customers, he would have the seeds of a successful business. Founded on these ideals, he knew the strength of his idea was grounded in the people who would make them work. J.R Mann was the first person to propel his vision. Today, 50 years later, those same principles continue to guide us. Stephens Pipe and Steel employs more than 1400 people in 19 locations, strategically located to service its more than 7,000 plus customers nationwide. Stephens Pipe & Steel Celebrates

50 Years of Success

In the early 1970s, Terry Stephens was a college student, studying accounting, working a summer job with a farm gate manufacturer. He stayed on as their bookkeeper after completing his degree. As he learned more about the business, he became interested in the steel side of the industry.

“Working on the books for the company gave me a lot of insight, and I knew if I could sell fence products at a competitive price and quickly deliver to customers, I could have a successful business,” says Stephens. “I also realized the strength of this idea had to be grounded in the people who worked there.”

That idea led to the opening of the first location of Stephens Pipe & Steel (SPS) in 1974

From a Side Business to a National Powerhouse

in Russell Springs, Kentucky. From this small office, Stephens sold fence framework and fabric to local fence companies in Kentucky. In the beginning, this was more of a sideline for him. “I was elected to public office, continuing in that position for a dozen years,” he explains. “But even as a side business, our company grew, largely due to the contributions of our first employee, J.R. Mann. He was a driving force for my vision and our success and became a great friend. He has certainly been missed since his untimely death in 2012.”

Stephens says one of the biggest challenges in their early years was managing their growth. “We were willing to work hard, and that hard work paid off, but being able to fund the staff, equipment and inventory we needed was often a test. We worked a lot of long hours, but the lessons we learned back then have served our company well over the years. When you are working at something you enjoy, even working through the challenges doesn’t seem like a bad day’s work.”

The next phase of growth for SPS was moving the office and operations to a two-acre lot in rural Russel County in 1980. This enabled them to expand regionally to service all of Kentucky, Tennessee and across the Southeastern U.S.

Steady growth continued and the 1990s marked several milestones, with the opening of weaving operations in Kentucky and Alabama, the acquisition of other companies, and the opening of five retail locations in five states. By the end of the decade, SPS employed 350 employees. Growth has been exponential since 2000, with manufacturing expansion in chain link, wire, and polyester powder coating.

50 years after it began, SPS has grown to 1400 employees, 19 locations and over 7500 customers across the country. Their operations include three million square feet of manufacturing facilities, 120 weaving machines and a fleet of 190 trucks.

" We were willing to work hard, and that hard work paid off . . ." ~Terry Stephens

SPS is now the largest American-owned Fence Distributor and Manufacturer and has built a reputation as a true onestop-shop for all fencing needs.

They manufacture both round and square pipe, all types of galvanized and color chain link and framework, gates, kennels, temporary panels, ornamental fence, PVC, ties, barbed wire and tension wire. In addition, SPS is a major stocking distributor of aluminum and steel ornamental, rebar, concrete mesh, DOT fence, guard rail, fittings and anything else their customers need.

Stephens says the secret to their success is not a secret at all. “We have never lost our initial focus on two things: building long lasting relationships with customers through quality and services, and surrounding ourselves with a team of hardworking employees who are committed to serving our customers. Thanks to these guiding principles, SPS is well-positioned for continued growth as we celebrate our half-century milestone.”

Choosing among the variety of tools, equipment and software on the market can be daunting. We’re previewing what’s new and recommended to help you get the job done.

TIPS FOR TOOL MAINTENANCE Equipment, Tools and Software

The tools of a contractor are their bread and butter. Keeping them in good condition helps deliver quality work in a safe and efficient manner.

Andrew Schoenherr, country manager with Stockade, says, “Tools are almost as valuable as your hands; they enable you to get the job done. Maintaining tools is crucial to getting the most life out of them and having them operate as they were built.”

Stockade is a leading provider of tools within the fencing industry, available throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. Cleaning and tool maintenance can go a long way in keeping tools in good shape. Stockade provides these care tips for their power stapler tools:

• Keep parts tight. Screws and bolts on the power stapler magazine and nose should be secure but not super tight.

• Staples should slide freely along the magazine. On the odd occasion, steel wear plates in the magazine can expand with heat causing staples to bind. The simple fix for this is to

take out the two wear plates, give them a slight squeeze with pliers, and replace.

• Lubricate the correct product for your stapler. When doing regular cleaning and maintenance work on the ST400i and ST315i, wipe and spray the coiled spring using a degreaser. Oil and CRCtype products tend to attract dust and grit, so try to avoid using these on a Stockade tool. The ST315 and ST400 models use different fuels. The ST400i uses a drier gas so there will be less oily residue.

“Even with good cleaning and maintenance routines, having your tools serviced regularly will increase their life and service,” Schoenherr says. “We are proud to work with many service agents around the globe.”

LOG CABIN FENCE INTRODUCES THE BILLET LITE

Their line of drivers/augers gets the job done right

Choosing the right tool makes getting the job done a lot easier. Log Cabin Fence offers a selection of augers and drivers to help with efficiency and keeping the project on schedule.

“We’ve manufactured the Pro Driver for 22 years using all U.S. steel and components,” explains Clint Iams, CEO of Log Cabin Fence in Pennsylvania. “It’s designed for the professional agriculture fence installer. Our most popular unit is a skid steer mount. All units are designed to incorporate both an auger and post driver.”

Log Cabin Fence recently launched its latest innovation, the Billet Lite, within the line of Billet products. Also using all US steel, the Billet product line

“We've manufactured the Pro Driver for 22 years using all US steel and components.” ~ Clint Iams

is designed for the residential contractor and is designed mostly for driving small I beams for ornamental aluminum, chain link posts both for chain link and sleeving for vinyl, as well as postmasters.

The Billet Heavy includes the down pressure auger system while the Billet Lite is a lighter-weight option that deletes the auger for weight and price savings. It is geared toward the contractor fully invested in no-dig installations.

Matt Liggett, owner of Circle L. Fence in Ohio, and a long-time customer of Log Cabin Fence says, “Twenty-four years ago when I started Circle L Fence, it was me, one employee, a tractor, and a three-point hitch post driver. It did not take me long to realize that upgrading equipment would be a necessity

18 JUNE 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

if I was going to be successful in the fence industry. Enter Bill Iams and the Log Cabin Pro Driver. Approximately two years after starting the business, I was able to purchase our first Log Cabin Pro Driver. We now operate five crews daily performing a mix of heavy commercial and agriculture fence. We operate three Log Cabin Pro Drivers daily. They have directly contributed to the growth and success of my business.”

Innovation is imbedded in Log Cabin Fence. “Back in the day, we were an early adapter of utilizing high tensile wire for agriculture applications,” explains Iams. “In 2002, after years of utilizing various post drivers offered from the market, we began manufacturing a contractor-grade hydraulic post driver/auger system: the Log Cabin Pro Driver. It is this experience and ingenuity that has led to the Billet’s production. While the Log Cabin Pro Driver is perfect for the agricultural fence installer, the residential and commercial markets had few products offering to service their growing industry needs. That is why we developed the Billet.”

JLS Crafstmen Leverages CONTRACTOR ACCELERATOR to Support Growth and Efficiency

OVERVIEW:

JLS Craftsmen specializes in building fences and decks with quality workmanship in the Kansas City Metro and Lawrence, Kansas, areas. The company had humble beginnings in assisting a few neighbors in repurposing the materials from their old fences and decks, transforming them into beautiful, sturdy structures. The company quickly gained recognition as word spread about its impressive craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.

CHALLENGE:

Like many small businesses, JLS Craftsmen faced the challenge of managing multiple aspects of their operations using spreadsheets and notebooks. The owner had to juggle responsibilities such as hiring, training, sales, customer management, scheduling, installation, billing, and more. While the company received excellent customer reviews, the behind-thescenes operations were becoming increasingly difficult to manage in order to maintain the high level of service they were known for. Recognizing the potential risks of delays, miscommunications, and reduced productivity associated with their manual and time-consuming project management process, JLS Craftsmen proactively sought a software solution to streamline their workflow and enhance efficiency.

SOLUTION:

After researching numerous options, JLS Craftsmen chose Contractor Accelerator, an all-inone business management app for contractors, as a solution for managing their workflow. The system seamlessly integrated their existing workflow, and the company was able to take advantage of the software’s project management features. This allowed them to effectively manage schedules, document customer interactions, and stay updated on project progress in realtime. By eliminating manual processes, they significantly reduced the chances of errors, resulting in improved overall efficiency. The inclusion of Contractor Accelerator's proposal and estimation tools empowered the team to quickly create professional, accurate, and comprehensive drawings and bids for their customers. This time-saving solution also allows them to manage leads and create a more professional, organized, and customerfocused experience for prospective clients.

RESULTS:

The polished project proposals and streamlined processes of Contractor Accelerator helped JLS Craftsmen establish a more professional image and gave the team more confidence when bidding against their well-known competitors. This also led to increased trust from clients and served as validation for the outstanding customer reviews they had already received. Even during slower months, the software's efficient organization and enhanced visibility played a pivotal role in reconnecting with potential clients,

enabling them to submit updated bids and win jobs that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks. With the improved efficiencies, the JLS Craftsmen team effectively managed more than 300% growth without extra work hours or the addition of staff, while continuing to deliver timely and exceptional service to their customers.

“We do three times the revenue now than before we started using it, and we have not worked a single Saturday or hired any additional office staff other than a salesperson,” says Jacob Scallorn, owner, JLS Craftsmen’s. “A combination of an aesthetically pleasing appearance and understated professionalism will tip the scales in our favor almost every time. This system delivers that better than any I have seen.”

EMBRACING THE BENEFITS OF EQUIPMENT RENTAL

Drilling Through Soft Soil

Providing quality services while maintaining a healthy bottom line will forever be high on a contractor’s priority list. Renting drilling equipment is one way to maximize productivity and potential while minimizing expenses. For specialty projects and testing the waters on new services, equipment rental can be a cost-efficient option for contractors looking to provide more without overinvesting.

There are endless opportunities that rental centers can help a fencing crew tackle. For example, rental centers offer a range of machines and attachments for safe one-person operation. Availability will vary from center to center, but contractors can usually find mechanical and hydraulic earth drills as well as mini trenchers in a variety of sizes — perfectly scalable for construction and landscape projects.

Looking for a post-hole auger that is lightweight, high-speed and digs quickly and cleanly? See what the local rental center has for mechanical earth augers. These compact machines power through sand, silt and loam, creating clean six to eight inch diameter holes for applications such as fencing, deck building, landscaping and more.

“Digging a post hole takes less than a minute, meaning a crew can accomplish a lot with just a twoday rental,” explains Joe Haynes, owner of Little Beaver in Livingston, Texas.

Need to bore under something? With optional horizontal boring attachments, contractors can easily rent the equipment to bore under sidewalks and driveways to install landscape lighting, water systems and much more.

Tackling Tough Soil

For tougher soils — like clay, rock or frozen ground — a hydraulic earth drill may be the best choice. These machines offer more power than mechanical drills, and some models still allow one-person drilling.

“With their extra torque, hydraulic earth drills can handle augers up to 16 inches in diameter and can drill depths of up to 30 feet with the right auger. Some also include a reversible feature for quick removal from the ground,” Haynes explains.

With even more power and potential, towable hydraulic augers have a balanced torque-free design to enhance operator safety when drilling through uneven terrain. These earth augers are ideal for fencing, landscaping, decks, sign installation and recreational applications.

Effortless Trenching

Mini trencher machines at the local rental center are a great solution for digging trenches. With some versions capable of digging a 12-inch-deep trench at speeds

a post-hole

Maximize potential while minimizing expenses

of up to 30-feet per minute, they make installing lawn sprinklers, electric dog fencing, low voltage wiring, plumbing and drainage lines and wire cable the work of an afternoon. Silt fencing, landscape edging, root pruning and bed preparation also become faster and less backbreaking.

Can Renting Work for Me?

When it comes to one-time projects — those special requests that pop up in conjunction with a current project but aren’t something a contractor plans to offer regularly — renting lets crews get the job done without a costly, long-term commitment. Depending on the length of the rental, the team can even knock out several small projects with the same machine, optimizing efficiency. Planning will help ensure a contractor gets the most out of the rental.

Repeatedly renting the same equipment can also be cost-efficient, to a point. It’s a great way for small businesses looking to expand their services to test out different machines and attachments before committing. “For equipment contractors don’t plan on using every day, renting rather than buying saves money since the rental center takes on the initial cost of the machine and any maintenance needs,” Haynes explains. “However, it’s important to keep in mind there’s a limit to the cost benefits of renting if a crew is frequently using a specific machine.”

When used wisely, renting can be a valuable tool for contractors looking to provide more while spending less. The fastest way to assess rental potential is by taking a trip to the local rental center or talking to the manufacturers who supply their equipment.

A REVOLUTION IN FENCING SOFTWARE

A growing sector of tools within the toolkit for the fencing industry is estimating software. Fence Cloud, formerly known as CFS, has reimagined fencing software to be an easy go-to tool designed to manage operations.

“Fence Cloud creates and maintains supplier catalogs for customers,” explains Julie Schulze, director of marketing with Fence Cloud. “If a supplier is not already available, we will create their material catalog for them. With hundreds of product lines currently available, many fencing companies can hop into Fence Cloud, install a supplier’s catalog, or a generic catalog, and start creating material breakdowns within hours. Which means, Fence Cloud has suppliers ready for estimating materials right away.”

While Fence Cloud can produce a material breakdown with shop drawings on day one, many companies want to tailor the software for their company. “This is where Fence Cloud shines,” Schulze says. “Fence Cloud can do a lot to standardize and optimize your estimating, but customizing the program to your company’s process is what makes it truly powerful. By entering your supplier prices and creating material templates, you’ll streamline the estimating process so that you can create residential estimates in one-minute flat. That is why so much of Fence Cloud is customizable, including estimating menus, materials calculations, document templates, workflows, user permissions and more.”

Schulze also cautions potential customers that software is not a magic bullet. “Many software companies like to promise customers the world, and then only deliver a subdivision. Implementing powerful, custom estimating solutions takes time and effort, but the companies that make this leap reap the benefits.”

CFS has been part of the fencing industry for over 40 years. “Our customers have taught us valuable lessons during that time,” she says. “Including the fact that no two fence companies are exactly alike.”

Fence Cloud was developed to handle installation techniques ranging from Canada to Mexico, coast to coast, and is continuously expanding. “We are currently working on vinyl fabrication and no-dig estimating solutions,” Schulze explains. “Because Fence Cloud is laser-focused on the fencing industry, we wake up every day asking ourselves what do our customers want next, rather than what new industry could we serve.”

“Our aim is to make running a fencing company more profitable and more enjoyable. When one of our customers can implement software that tracks their leads, provides their supplier’s material catalog, creates a material breakdown with every document they need to close that job, and collects a signature before they leave the property, we consider that a win,” Schulze says.

WHEN IT WORKS BETTER THAN

Quik Pull does a whole lot more

Every now and then, a tool is created, and it works great for the original purpose; then its potential expands to other areas.

That’s the case with NW Quik Pull, the trusty blue tripod manual post puller. It was designed to effortlessly extract posts from the ground, eliminating the hassle of digging, whether it’s embedded in concrete or ground. “It does this job exceptionally well,” explains Rowdy Sloggett, owner and inventor of NW Quik Pull, located in Washington.

It has 10,000 lbs. of pulling force with a tripod that is designed to enhance stability, and it’s easily foldable, making it easy to store in a truck.

“Even though I created it for the fencing industry and it shines in that capacity, we’ve found it has a multitude of other applications,” Sloggett explains. “As fence companies expand their services and diversify into landscaping, deck construction, outdoor living and so on, the Quik Pull can be put to use in all of those arenas.”

Landscapers have embraced its versatility, using the NW Quik Pull to remove small trees, shrubs, bamboo, grapevines, and they put it to work in vineyards.

“We’ve expanded into the tool rental industry because we’re finding homeowners are eager to rent it for a weekend to tackle their own endeavors at home,” he says.

In addition to pulling posts, the Quik Pull is also a signpost extraction expert, capable of pulling all types of signposts, whether metal or wood. Sign companies, franchises, and governmental agencies such as public works and municipalities are using it with great success.

“Some innovative Public Works Departments even utilize it for lifting manhole covers and dislodging stubborn storm drains,” Sloggett says.

Sloggett and his wife, Kelly, a veteran, own NW Quik Pull and are proud to say it is 100% American made.

“If you’re contemplating expanding your business, Quik Pull is a go-to tool for pulling out old deck footings, removing rebar from forms, and I could go on with so many examples of how this tool has reached beyond what we envisioned,” he explains. “As a fellow small business owner striving to build something meaningful, I understand the challenges and victories that come with the territory. So, to all my fellow entrepreneurs out there, know that I’m rooting for you every step of the way.”

The Advantages of Pre-Staining Lumber In-House

Staining wood fences and decks brings out the beauty of the lumber and enhances the overall look of the project. Most of the time, though, staining at the job site can be a hassle and prone to weather-related delays.

“That’s why I invented StainTrac, a lumber staining machine,” says Duane Voss, vice president of StainTrac. “Give the nastiest and toughest job to the laziest employee and he will invent the easiest solution!”

Voss, an Army veteran and fabricator, created StainTrac and teamed up with long-time friend Cliff Richison, who has spent many years in the fencing industry, to offer StainTrac worldwide.

Once contractors purchase the machine, they often recoup their costs quickly, due to increased efficiency. Each board is sprayed with stain, then passes through nap rollers to remove excess and

evenly spread stain to all surfaces. Excess stain drains back into a bucket below and is re-circulated, so there’s virtually zero waste. It can be used on lumber for fences, decks, pergolas, or other outdoor wood construction projects. The lumber can be up to 8” wide and 8” deep, and it can stain 5 – 10 boards per minute.

StainTrac eliminates weather-related delays, so contractors can stay on schedule. Also, there is no fear of overspray getting on vehicles and structures, so liability is greatly reduced.

“Contractors can cut their liability in half with pre-staining lumber in-house rather than staining at the job site,” says Richison, president of StainTrac. “If you don’t have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to have time to fix it right?”

FINDING YOUR

Comfort Zone

Navigating Modern Compact Track Loader and Skid Steer Comfort Features

Comfort while operating equipment was once no more than an afterthought. That all seems to be changing, according to Buck Storlie, aftermarket director for the ASV brand. “Manufacturers focus a lot on the performance aspect, and now we’re diversifying that by providing bestin-class comfort as well. Today, you can do everything with a compact track loader and skid steer in comfort and have a top-notch user experience.”

Based on a recent survey from a top manufacturer, comfort is the number one factor customers look at today when considering which configuration of a ompact track loader or skid steer to purchase. It’s easy to see why. Manufacturers continue to incorporate modern comfort features, meaning operators have become accustomed to a certain level of luxury, especially in the last few years. For the construction business owner struggling with employee recruitment and retention, having equipment that is enjoyable to operate could make all the difference in maintaining a strong, reliable crew.

“And let’s not forget productivity,” adds Storlie. “Operators who are comfortable experience less fatigue, allowing them to not only spend more hours in the cab, but also to be more alert while they work, increasing both productivity and safety.”

Options for comfort features on modern compact track loaders and skid steers are numerous. Storlie says understanding the options available can help contractors make the best choice to maximize their investment in both comfort and productivity.

Creature Comforts

Inside the cab is where comfort features are most obvious. Most newer models of compact track loaders and skid steers have suspended seats, adding at least a minimal buffer between the operator and the machine’s frame. Many manufacturers now offer air ride seats for even better protection for the operator. Some brands take it a step further by adding full adjustability – recline, slide, weight and even the four-way arm rest, allowing for a comfortable fit for any body type.

The integration of a single-sided lap bar enhances comfort further as opposed to the more cumbersome and restricting overhead lap bar design. A single-sided bar frees up space around the operator’s waist and makes entry and exit easier.

Roominess in the cab is primary feature for accommodating multiple operator body types and for comfort during long hours in the cab. While the maximum possible cab space will be limited by the size class of the machine itself, some manufacturers use strategic engineering to squeeze in every inch of operator space they can.

Other modern features that impact the overall experience include Bluetooth radios, speaker quality and placement, USB charging ports and cell phone trays and chargers.

Visibiltiy & Ergonomics

Ease of operation enhance by intuitive controls, ergonomic efficiencies and high visibility can make the operator more productive and less fatigued at the end of the day.

Visibility can improve operator comfort and safety when operators don’t have to shift their bodies around as much to get a better view, whether it’s of the attachment, proximity to obstructions or other individuals on the jobsite. Clear visible area is one of the biggest factors of visibility. Some modern compact track loaders and skid steers have floor-to-ceiling visibility, including all-clear sides and frameless doors.

“If you can see the work better, you’re much more effective as an operator. Better visibility means a better view of the bucket, a sightline on the edge of the building and more,” Storlie says. “The safety aspect that goes with this is the ability to see objects and bystanders to better avoid obstacles and create a safer work environment.”

Ergonomics should always be part of the discussion when considering ease of use. Factors like intuitive switch placement, adjustable joystick controls and control panels may seem like small touches but make all the difference when repeating the same actions hundreds of times a day.

Ride Quality

To work comfortably and effectively for long periods of time, operators must be able to endure the ride. For both skid steers and compact track loaders, ride quality starts from the ground up, and that often means a suspended undercarriage.

Not all suspended undercarriages are the same. One of the most advanced options a contractor could find is known as dual-level suspension, found on some mid-

and large-frame compact track loaders. This configuration keeps more track on the ground, improving operator comfort, traction and machine performance, and keeps more material in the bucket. Some designs maximize this advantage through the use of tracks with a polycord internal as opposed to steel for the best possible ground contact. The flexing track can morph around smaller obstacles like rocks, sticks or debris, minimizing rocking of the entire machine that can occur with rigid or single-level suspensions.

Skid steers are a little simpler when considering ride quality options since their designs are less

complex and varied than their tracked counterparts. Two major factors affect ride quality: tire choice and wheelbase. Premium tires that provide an air tire feel with flat-free functionality offer the most comfortable ride. When considering wheelbase, longer means more stability and a more comfortable operator. A short wheelbase results in the machine’s tendency to buck and hop, tipping back and forth drastically on virtually any terrain with imperfections. A long wheelbase, by contrast, provides a flatter and more stable platform with less jarring for the operator.

Bringing It Home

With so many comfort features and options available on modern skid steers and compact track loaders, it can seem overwhelming for the contractor deciding which machine to bring home. Storlie says. “Taking the time to evaluate which features make the most sense for your business is undoubtedly worth the effort. Elevated productivity, improved employee recruitment and retention, and the simple pleasure of looking forward to starting work in the morning are all available if you’re willing to navigate the options and invest in the right machine.”

Introducing the Game-Changing WORD DTH Auger Drive Kit: Revolutionizing Rock Drilling for Fence Installers

For years, WORD Rock Drills has been at the forefront of providing high-quality rock drilling attachments to the fencing community. With a range of skid steer drilling options catering to various needs, WORD has been a trusted partner for fence installers nationwide. However, recognizing a gap in the market and the evolving needs of their customers, the company has created the WORD DTH Auger Drive Kit.

Designed to address the specific challenges faced by fence installers dealing with tough soil conditions, the DTH Auger Drive Kit is a gamechanger in the industry. Offering a solution tailored to the needs of the fencing community, this new kit allows for shallow hole drilling of up to six feet deep and six inches wide, empowering installers to take on more challenging projects with confidence.

According to Reid Sockwell, salesman with WORD, what sets the WORD DTH Auger Drive Kit apart is its user-friendly design and efficiency. “Installers can now convert their existing Auger Drive Attachment into a powerful rock drill, eliminating the need for subcontracting drilling services or costly excavation processes. This not only saves valuable time but also significantly reduces project costs, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses of all sizes.”

Sockwell has worked closely with the company’s fencing customers for several years and has seen several thrive with this new product line. "I had many customers who were unsure about investing in our standard skid steer attachment

but needed a drilling solution. Traditional methods were costing them time and money, but they weren’t ready to make the leap to one of our larger attachments. The DTH Auger Drive Kit met them halfway, helping them win contracts and complete work quickly."

He explains that one of the key advantages of this kit is its versatility. “By incorporating a tool familiar to many fencing installers—the Skid Steer Auger Drive Attachment—WORD has created a solution that seamlessly integrates into existing workflows. Whether you're working on residential fencing projects or commercial installations, this kit is engineered to meet your drilling needs efficiently and effectively.”

The DTH Auger Drive Kit is a solution that empowers fence installers to overcome obstacles, save costs, and achieve greater efficiency in their operations. In addition, Sockwell says the compact nature of the DTH Auger Drive Kit means it can be easily transported and maneuvered on-site, enhancing overall productivity. “With this tool in your fleet, you can take on challenging terrains and expand into new markets with confidence.”

“The development of the DTH Auger Drive Kit is a testament to our commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction,” says Sockwell. “At WORD, we believe in not just meeting but exceeding our customers' expectations. We invite fence installers everywhere to experience the difference firsthand and revolutionize their rock drilling capabilities.”

WATER ON THE GO: Water Hopper Offers Product Mixing Anywhere

Water is not only a necessity for life, but also a vital part of the construction business. Having a low supply or simply having water out of reach can put your project in a bind and risk a delayed completion. The Water Hopper, a tank designed specifically for fence trucks, offers a portable solution for water everywhere you go.

“The Water Hopper attaches directly to the headache rack of a truck,” says Randy Campbell, with C&M Fence Co. “The hopper has a slim design that doesn’t take up your truck bed, so you can bring all of your materials and water in one haul.”

The Water Hopper holds up to 110 gallons of water and has a three-fourths inch threaded brass spigot receiver at its base for fast flow when you need it. “This is a great

addition to your mobile mixing set up. You can have confidence that everything you need to complete a job in a timely manner is ready to go.”

Safety is the most important part of any job, and that includes traveling to the work site. The sleek design of the Water Hopper conserves space but doesn’t take away from the driver’s safety with its cutout design around the vehicles rearview window.

Campbell says, “The Water Hopper can fit any flatbed work truck or trailer. It’s both functional and practical and is a great solution for portable water needs.”

STREAMLINING FENCE DESIGN AND ESTIMATION WITH SIMPALLO

Innovative technologies are revolutionizing the way professionals design, estimate, and manage projects, and that includes the fence industry.

Simpallo was built by a fence industry veteran with a simple purpose: to make the process of getting from a set of plans to a material list more efficient and less painful all while being stored on a cloud-based system that is accessible from anywhere on any device.

“As someone who had struggled with keeping all the information involved in planning and estimating organized, while also managing and working jobs for our fence business, this software was created to make my life easier," says Dan Turbeville, founder of Simpallo. “The system has been refined and today offers a comprehensive solution designed to streamline the fence design and estimation process.”

Simpallo features an intuitive interface and flexible, user-friendly tools, search as search features drawing tools and customization for your company. Contractors can quickly create detailed fence layouts, incorporating various materials, styles, and configurations with ease, whether it's a residential, commercial, or industrial project.

Accuracy when estimating project costs and materials is critical and has a direct impact on your bottom line. Simpallo uses advanced algorithms and calculations to generate accurate material lists quickly. Contractors can input project specifications, such as dimensions and materials, and receive detailed material breakdowns, ensuring transparency and eliminating guesswork. Users can create stock items that will generate a complete material cost breakdown, however, there are no integrations available with any suppliers, yet. Users can calculate labor using several different methods, including price per foot, per man hour or per section.

Simpallo optimizes material layouts and calculates precise material quantities based on project specifications. This not only reduces material costs but also minimizes waste, leading to greater sustainability and costeffectiveness. The system also facilitates clear communication by allowing multiple users to access and collaborate on projects in real time.

“By automating repetitive tasks, reducing manual errors, and streamlining workflows, Simpallo significantly enhances efficiency and productivity,” says Tuberville. “Contractors can complete fence estimation tasks in a fraction of the time, allowing them to take on more projects and grow their businesses without sacrificing quality.”

MAXIMIZING EFFICIENCY: Advantages of Using a Mobile Concrete Mixer

In the world of construction, time is money, and efficiency is key. Traditional methods of concrete mixing often involve logistical challenges, delays, and quality control issues. A mobile concrete mixer can transform on-site concrete operations and production, providing the ability to mix concrete in areas that aren’t truck accessible.

“The flexibility and convenience of a mobile mixer provides substantial benefits for many small construction projects,” says Peyton Maddox with MudMixer®. Our MudMixer® is the premier option on the market for efficient, mobile mixing and dispensing on job sites.”

Versatility and Efficiency

Mobile mixers outdo traditional drum mixers in accessibility and flexibility, reaching remote locations or areas where constructing a large batch of mud is not practical. The capacity to mix on-site reduces waste and ensures fresh concrete, mortar, stucco, or other mixtures for any project tasks.

Bringing Mixing to the Construction Site

A notable advantage is the ability of a mobile concrete mixer to bring the mixing process right to the project site, eliminating the need to deliver ready-mix concrete on smaller jobs. This saves time, minimizes logistical challenges, and ensures access to ready-to-use, fresh material at any location.

Control, Consistency, and Time Savings

Mobile mixers provide exceptional control over the material mixing process, enhancing the quality of construction, and minimizing waste. The efficient use of time on job sites is vital, and mobile mixers ensure a regular supply of materials, reducing unnecessary downtime.

Versatile and Cost-Effective Mixing

With the capacity to handle an array of construction materials, mobile mixers can adapt to various project requirements, whether this involves specialty mixes or traditional concrete. Mixing on-site minimizes transportation costs and waste, providing better control over the quantity of material involved.

Maddox says the ability to handle multiple jobs with the MudMixer, without having to wait for concrete mixing and shuttling significantly streamlines operations, making concrete laying operations more efficient. “It also provides the flexibility to take on small patches, weekend jobs, or emergencies, with greater speed and efficiency.”

He highlights some of the additional key advantages of using this mobile concrete mixer:

Efficiency in Labor and Quality Outcomes

When you are operating with a small team on-site, mobile mixers reduce the need for manual labor, enabling your workforce to focus on other aspects of the project.

“In an industry where every minute counts, the MudMixer mobile concrete mixer can be a gamechanger,” says Maddox. “Allowing contractors

IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITABILITY WITH THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

For nearly two decades, Standard Paints, Inc. has been offering a monthly Wood Defender Training Class to help kick-start staining businesses or add fence staining to existing business models. Many of the contractors that attend class get started using a simple pump-up or airless sprayer.

“These options work extremely well as Wood Defender stain can be applied with a brush or roller, but as your business grows, you may find that you need to scale and invest in equipment to prioritize efficiency,” explains Roy Branch, director of Wholesale Distribution with Wood Defender. “That’s why we developed a full line of purpose-built equipment with pros like you in mind. Each piece is designed to make jobs more efficient and cost effective.”

Branch takes a closer look at the vital role equipment plays in enhancing operational efficiency, improving work quality, and ultimately contributing to increased business profitability.

Enhanced Efficiency & Productivity

Professional staining equipment allows businesses to complete projects faster and with less manpower. For example, advanced sprayers can cover large areas evenly in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional rollers or brushes. This speed not only increases the number of projects a company can take on but also reduces labor costs, which are often the largest expense in the industry. Leveraging state-of-the-art equipment such as Wood Defender's ST-250 Pro Package or the ES150 Spray Machine can significantly enhance business operations. These tools are designed for high efficiency and precision, allowing for rapid, uniform application of stains, which improves both productivity and the quality of work.

Consistency & Quality

High-quality equipment provides consistent results, which are crucial for building and maintaining a business’s reputation. Uniform application ensures that every project meets high standards, leading to satisfied customers and repeat business. Moreover, professionalgrade tools often feature adjustable settings to cater to different types of wood and finishes, enhancing the final product's look and durability.

Safety & Environmental Compliance

Professional equipment is designed with safety and environmental regulations in mind. This is especially important in industries dealing with chemicals, such as stains and sealers. Efficient sprayers like the ES-150 Spray Machine minimize overspray and reduce waste, not only conserving materials but also decreasing the risk of environmental contamination and exposure to harmful substances.

By utilizing a 50-gallon tank, you don’t have a need to open or mix product on your customers’ property, thereby reducing the chance of a spill. The right equipment not only helps with regulatory compliance but also reduces liability.

Cost-Effectiveness

While the initial investment in high-end equipment may be substantial and appear costly upfront, the long-term savings are significant—from reduced labor costs, lower material wastage, and minimal maintenance needs. Better efficiency reduces ongoing costs, and durability means that the equipment will not need to be replaced frequently and will withstand the rigors of frequent commercial use. Using professional tools often requires less maintenance and the equipment can handle commercial-grade products, which might not be feasible with lesser-quality options.

Competitive Edge

The ability to offer superior quality work at a quicker pace is a strong selling point. Furthermore, showcasing a commitment to using top-tier tools can help attract a clientele that values quality and is willing to pay a premium for superior service.

The ST-250 Pro Package, for instance, is a turnkey solution for starting your business, and is ideal for handling larger or more complex jobs with its robust design and advanced features—you can stand up a business in a day while looking like you’ve been established for years! Whether you make the choice to go with the fully wrapped ST-250 Pro Package or build out your own trailer or vehicle with a wrap, never underestimate the power of your brand and a polished, professional look.

For businesses in the fence and deck staining industry, the choice of equipment is not just about doing a job but doing it well and profitably. Investing in the right tools not only boosts efficiency and quality but also enhances safety, ensures compliance, and reduces liability, and builds a reputation that can elevate a company above its competition.

For contractors who are ready to elevate their operational capabilities and market competitiveness, exploring Wood Defender’s range of professional staining equipment could be the key to unlocking new levels of profitability and customer satisfaction. “From the ST-250 Pro Package, to the ST-250, to the ES-150 Spray Machine and beyond, we have a variety of configurations to meet a variety of needs,” Branch says.

SIMPLIFY WIRE INSTALLATION WITH L&C’S TENSION WIRE DISPENSER

Tension wire installation can be a time-consuming task, impacting efficiency, precision and profit, if not managed effectively.

“Fence installers are constantly looking for ways to save time, cut down labor from jobs and maintain competitiveness for bids,” says Ron Chouinard, L&C Enterprises-USA owner. “Manual dispensing is slow, easily causes tangles, and most important, may result in injuries to workers. L&C’s Tenison Wire Dispenser solves these problems. With this tool, you can speed up installation, provide a safe working environment and have more success with competitive bids. The increased installation speed and ability reduces labor, results in better margins, higher profits per job and more jobs.”

Chouinard explains that the Tension Wire Dispenser easily hooks up to a vehicle, tractor or skid steer hitch for fast installation. Simply secure the wire to a termination post and drive forward to dispense. Control the adjustable unwind tension for desired installation speed. The unit is designed to dispense from the left or the right side and accommodates six to 12-foot fence heights for most commercial installations. With automated dispensing, fencing is more secure and consistent. When the wire runs out, simply twist the old end with a new one and continue dispensing.

Ideal for commercial chain link fence installation in high-security areas, the Tension Wire Dispenser was developed in northern Michigan by industry experts with practical experience building fences in colder, more demanding climates. Its design makes it perfect for solar and wind farms, airports, municipalities and government buildings that require a secure perimeter. It also provides benefits to guard rail installation, sports field, event venues and commercial and industrial business security.

“The Tension Wire Dispenser is a safe, fast and easy way to strengthen chain link fence fabric, especially in places where security is a concern,” says Kevin Sodermark, vice president of L&C. “There is no other piece of equipment like it in the fencing industry.”

Extremely durable, the Tension Wire Dispenser has been blasted, primed, and painted for abuse in harsh conditions and a long life. L&C EnterprisesUSA warranties each Tension Wire Dispenser for one year from the time of purchase. The warranty covers the workmanship and materials.

Celebrating 40 YEARS OF Excellence IS PROUD

I hope Ted Eysenbach is not reading this. Ted is probably the most accomplished boat enthusiast I know (except for maybe David Smith, but he went to the Naval Academy, so that doesn’t count). Ted would be shocked to see me using even the most basic sailing terminology in a column because he has seen me teetering around sailboats, cocktail cruises, and catamarans at our CLFMI meetings for more than 20 years.

But, while that phrase may have originated as a sailing term, it also applies to other forms of transportation. We’ve all heard train conductors call “All Aboard” as the train is pulling out from the station. It is simply a warning that means if you are coming on this vessel, or train, you must get on now because we are leaving, with or without you. It is that time of year when all of us in the fence industry need to get “aboard” the train - the training train. We are facing one of the biggest challenges our industry has faced in many years, and I don’t mean just hiring and training good fence installers (stop imagining Pete and Jake –this is serious!).

During the busy summer season, when most fence companies are working at full capacity, we sometimes overlook the importance of training because we are busy filling orders, putting crews together, looking for drivers, or running extra shifts to keep up with customer demand.

Regardless of how busy your company is, this is an opportune time to be implementing, upgrading, or planning for, training across the board. Here are some training priorities that we need to keep up on during the summer.

1. Safety Training: Of course, in our industry, safety is number one in every aspect of what we do. However, do not limit safety training to those who are required to have it because they work in one of the many hazardous aspects of the business. What about your sales staff, and your office staff? Do you require safety training for them, on things such as a fire, or a natural disaster, or basic first aid in the event of an

ALL ABOARD!

accident? Does your new employee orientation include information on these and other potential work-related emergencies?

2. Customer Service Training: If this is among your busiest times of the year, everyone interacts with customers (and potential customers) more frequently. Have you trained your staff how to manage the most common customer concerns, like late deliveries, project overruns, out-of-stock materials or products, unexpected price increases, or even poor workmanship? Even if they must refer the customer to another staffer, there are right and wrong ways of doing that.

“That’s not my job,” and, “I just install - you need to talk to our delivery people” doesn’t cut it anymore. Remember – you are guilty by association with every employee who interacts with your customers. Give them the training they need to be a good protector of your company’s brand.

3. Maintenance and Repair Training: This is an equipment-intense industry. That includes your office(s) equipment as well as your plant, field, transportation, and storage equipment. The proper maintenance and repair of all your equipment can make a substantial impact on your bottom line if all of your employees respect your investment in that equipment. Make sure they know equipment is a major cost center in their company, and they can have an impact on the company’s profitability by their understanding of how to maximize its use.

4. Environmental Training: Let’s get real. This is not a fad or a politically correct issue. It’s the law in a lot of cases, and it is just a good business practice in almost every way. Environmental training in areas such as handling and disposing of hazardous materials (yes, even office cleaning products and vehicle fluids) is important to companies operating or working

in environmentally sensitive locations. But every company, regardless of location or even local laws, should be creating a culture of being environmentally sensitive. They should be educating and training employees on how they can help with that part of your business operations, too.

Being an environmentally friendly company, and adding that to your company brand, is not a matter of adding a slogan to your marketing and advertising copy. It is a matter of being committed to the training needed to make that a reality throughout your company.

P.S. In today’s world, it is also a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

While the fence industry has a long history of supporting the absolute best in technical and skill training, that has not necessarily carried over to other parts of our companies with the same level of commitment. Now is a good time to make that happen.

ALL ABOARD!

Investing in Your Business The How, When and Why

The old business adage, “You’ve got to spend money to make money” is something fencing contractors should be considering as they plan for a new season of outdoor work this summer and fall.

Unlike the changing seasons, though, there is no point on the calendar that designates exactly when the time is right to put money back into the business. Instead, fencing contractors need to consider several factors in order to strike the proper balance between saving money and investing in improvements that will make their company more competitive. Primary among those factors are:

• Staffing – Does your business have enough experienced workers to handle current customers plus any new projects that might arise or are you losing sales because your team is stretched too thin?

• Equipment and Supplies – Do you have sufficient inventory to handle the current and projected workload and can you easily access supplies should existing inventory run low? Fencing contractors should also make sure any technology they are using, including software tools being used in the field and office equipment, is enabling the company to work efficiently and maintain productivity.

• Competition – Are you the only game in town or facing a crowded field? If it’s the latter, you might need to take a hard look at how you can be more competitive. Can you afford to cut costs or should you be investing more

in marketing, including enhancing your online presence. Because today’s consumers rely so much on Google, what can you do to stand out online? Is your website up-to-date and easy-to use? Do you have a SEO strategy that will help to bring in more quality leads?

In addition, fencing contractors should honestly assess the financial health of their business. That doesn’t mean taking a quick look at revenue or a recent profit/loss statement. It means examining those numbers over time to determine if they are static or increasing at a constant rate. It also means calculating the company’s ability to meet current operating expenses (payroll, inventory costs, taxes, etc.) and any short-term financial obligations (loans, leases, etc.).

With this information, fencing contractors will be in a good position to gauge whether they are getting the most value from the cash they have on hand. Strengthening your company’s financial posture could mean upgrading your website or making that needed purchase now, but it could also suggest that investing those available funds in a longer-term savings vehicle where it could earn interest would make more sense at this time.

To make that decision, contractors should consult with a trusted financial advisor to evaluate the potential benefits and liabilities of investing in the business now versus waiting for a better time to act. Will making that investment now help the company to streamline processes, be more productive, or attract more customers? Can the business get by without making that purchase or could waiting translate into lost business opportunities?

In making such assessments, fencing contractors need to be honest with themselves. Take emotion out of the equation. Crunch the numbers to determine if your cash flow is sufficient to afford it and still allow for some cushion should the unexpected – the loss of a major customer or a downturn

Bottom line, the time may never be perfect to invest in your own business. The market is always evolving. But by carefully evaluating the company’s current competitive posture, its financial position, and what may be needed to take the business to the next level, fencing contractors can more accurately determine the proper balance between putting money into savings or back

Unlocking Success: Insights from the Mr. Fence Academy Retreat 2024

Mr. Fence Academy recently concluded its fourth annual retreat on April 22, 2024. Over the course of four nights and three full days, fence geeks spanning from novices with just a month’s experience to veterans with over three decades in the industry came together in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains, all with one common goal – to improve. The yearly retreat is open to all fence professionals who want to increase profits, enhance their business, grow personally and decrease stress. Fence company owners, key team members and family members that are involved in the business come together in an intimate environment, conducive to sharing and learning, with each day packed full of intense sessions on building a better business and growing personally. With about 13 sessions each day, plus a morning group activity before breakfast, the retreat covers topics including building a budget, the importance of a sales pipeline, jobsite efficiencies, balancing family and business, and finding the “why” and “what” you are trying to achieve.

Those attending create bonds that will last a lifetime; a new family they each can turn to for help, advice, and support – their tribe. “So grateful for the amazing friends I was able to make. I feel like I have a huge family now and the biggest support system I’ve ever had,” states one of the retreat attendees. Another attendee wrote, “Mr. Fence Academy Retreat did not disappoint! From start to finish, it was relentless. Relentless

with data and info that every level of business can benefit from. Relentless with mental and spiritual energy. Relentless with people willing to help, guide, connect, and even just listen. And lastly, relentless with some of the best food I’ve ever had! I had an expectation of what it would be like, but it blew that out of the water. The takeaway from this retreat is immeasurable, and I’ll be unpacking it for days.”

After each day filled with powerful non-stop learning, evenings are spent dining together and fellowshipping until late into the evening, providing opportunities for further networking, idea exchange, and mentorship.

The retreat is held in a private lodge-like setting with everything on-site by design to create a comfortable family-type atmosphere and promote camaraderie. Fabulous one-of-a-kind freshly prepared meals are served morning, noon, and night. Lodge amenities offer attendees a chance to get to know one another while sitting around a fire, playing outdoor games, soaking in a hot tub, taking a swim, watching a movie, or simply sitting together in one of the lounge areas sharing stories until late into the night.

Shawn King, founder of the Mr. Fence Academy Retreat, says, ”Our goal at the Mr. Fence Academy Retreat, by providing industryspecific information to those wishing to grow their business, is to have attendees walk away with a clearer

understanding of who they are and who they want to become as people; to use their gifts and their talents to live life. We hope they leave having learned much more than the mechanics of running a successful fence business. We hope they discover their ‘why.’”

Proudly Manufacturing Quality Tools in the USA for 90 Years

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, and that cliché applies to the beginning of Vogel Tool & Die. Ninety years ago, Julius Vogel created a tool to speed up the process of attaching one end of a pipe to the side of another. His solution to a common production problem provided the foundation of a successful business that continues to strengthen its reputation for dependability across a wide range of industries.

“Prior to Mr. Vogel’s invention, time-consuming grinding or torch cutting was the most common method to notch pipes or tubes to prepare for joining,” explains Larry Siegal, sales manager with Vogel. “The resulting pipe ends were inconsistent, making the welding process to attach them trickier.”

Vogel’s invention, the Arc-Fit method, was granted a US patent in 1938. Based in Chicago, Vogel Tool & Die became an important supplier to the huge manufacturing hub in the region. Companies like Schwinn, Zenith, Motorola, and many others depended on Vogel tools. Growth was rapid and consistent, and the product line expanded over time to include tools to cut tubes, piercing, slotting, mitering and much more, all with the focus on the fabrication of tubular parts. “Our mission has always been to design tools that are dependable, easy to use, and that helped make manufacturing more efficient,” says Siegal.

He explains that the original Arc-Fit tool design has remained essentially unchanged. Today, the Arc-Fit hand operated pipe notching tool, along with power options, are available and are still considered a ‘hidden gem’ of a tool because there is no other reliable way to produce the notch quickly and consistently.

While changes have been made to streamline the production process and incorporate improved manufacturing technology, maintaining the core product’s design ensures backwards compatibility when a customer

needs to replace a part. “We save our customers money by not building in the obsolescence that seems to be common practice with so many products these days,” says Siegal.

Vogel’s tube and pipe notchers remain one of the company’s most popular products and are in use worldwide. High production options include the Arc-Twin line of tools that will notch a tube or pipe end in one stroke. A newer, popular tool presses pickets from square tubing. “Prior to this tool, the typical ornamental fence had ornate tops, produced from a casting,” explains Siegal. “In addition to the expense, vandals would sometimes smash the tops. The pressed picket concept eliminates this risk and is a less expensive solution.”

The company was owned by four generations of the Vogel family until 2009, when it was acquired by Manor Tool & Manufacturing Company, another Chicago-area family business. Manor Tool & Manufacturing Company began as a tool and die shop in 1959 and grew to become a first-class metal stamping company manufacturing everything from musical to military components. The Vogel name was so well known that the new ownership never really considered rebranding the products. To this day, Siegal says customers will call up and instead of saying, “I need to replace my pipe notcher,” they say, “I finally wore out my Vogel.”

Vogel has two locations. The primary factory is in Addition, Illinois, and the parent company, Manor Tool & Manufacturing, has a large facility in nearby Schiller Park, giving them the flexibility to shift production based on workload.

If asked about a secret to their success and longevity over a century of challenges, one answer from Vogel management would be their team. They currently have 57 employees, many of whom have been with them for

decades. “I have been with the company 30 years, the last 15 as sales manager,” says Siegal. “I was hired by the grandson of Julius Vogel. My story of long-term job satisfaction here is a common one among our team. General manager Rene Vega started 29 years ago as a tool designer. Shop foreman Tim Taylor joined Vogel at age 17 and is now celebrating his 40th year. Vogel’s president Thomas Simeone grew up in manufacturing and is the second-generation owner of Manor Tool and Manufacturing.”

Another key to Vogels success that might surprise many is the pride they take in not focusing on being necessarily cutting-edge. “Our Arc-Fit pipe notcher is certainly an old-school workhorse, but we know thousands of businesses have, and still, depend on it as a core part of their production,” says Siegal. “There’s something to be said about committing to doing what you do – and have done for decades – well, particularly when we are known for the legendary durability of our tools.”

Vogel continues to operate primarily as factory direct. “Our customers will tell you that when you deal with Vogel it’s still that wonderful small family-business feel,” says Siegal. “No one likes fighting their way through automated phone systems or having calls transferred over and over. When a customer calls Vogel, they talk to a person, and that person is typically me.”

The company looks forward to many more years of serving their customers, continuing to produce tools they rely on and that help them be successful. “So many in the fencing industry are small family businesses filled with wonderful hard-working dedicated people,” adds Siegal. “It’s an honor and privilege to have worked with so many and to be confident our tools help make their operations more efficient.”

Safety Gate

Fence News is committed to raising awareness of gate safety. It will take a combined effort on the part of all fence professionals to address potential safety hazards. Working with communities, schools, and businesses, we can improve gate safety around the world.

California Assembly Member Introduces Bill to Strengthen Gate Safety Regulations in Response to Child Fatality

California Assemblymember Damon Connolly introduced Assembly Bill 2149, also known as Alex’s Law, which will improve the safety regulations for any automatic vehicular gate, manual vehicular gate, or any gate that is greater than 48 inches wide or 84 inches tall. This legislation is in response to a tragic fatality in December 2019, in which seven-year-old Alex Quanbeck was killed by an unpermitted, poorly designed, and illmaintained 300-pound rolling gate during recess at his elementary school in Marin County located in Northern California.

“The tragedy of Alex Quanbeck’s death was both heartbreaking and preventable, and his story has touched our community,” says Connolly. “Strengthening gate safety measures addresses preventable tragedies by ensuring that if a gate’s structure fails, there will be additional safety measures protecting children from being crushed.”

“Our organization has worked closely with the Quanbeck family on industry initiatives that increase awareness, educate communities, and raise standards to eliminate gate-related injuries and deaths.”

AFA

Alex Quanbeck was playing football during recess at a Marin County private school when he attempted to close a gate, trying to keep the ball from rolling into an adjacent vehicle alley. As Alex pushed the gate closed, the rolling wheels detached from the gate rails and Alex was killed by the falling 300 pounds of metal. It was later determined that Alex’s death could have been prevented if the gate had been equipped with a safety device called a post stop, which uses a pole to stop the fall of a rolling gate if its wheels come off the track. Ensuring that

gates are properly equipped with these safety devices, particularly in schools, is essential to user safety and can prevent future tragedies.

Eric Quanbeck, Alex’s father, says, “In honor of Alex, we started The Hummingbird Alliance, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving school safety through education and advocacy. Tragically, we’ve discovered numerous child fatalities from gate failures that could have been prevented with safety devices.”

“No family should have to endure the pain of an utterly preventable death,” says Dayna Quanbeck, Alex’s mother. “We are proud that Alex’s Law will not only implement common-sense gate safety regulations, it will also save lives. Beyond our home state of California, the work will continue to improve gate safety throughout the U.S.” Alex’s Law requires any automatic vehicular gate, manual vehicular gate, or gate larger than 48 inches wide and 84 inches high to meet specified industry standards and requires that the owner of a regulated gate have it inspected on or before July 1, 2025, and re-inspected at least once every five years with written certification by a professional.

To meet specified standards, the gate:

• must not fall more than 45 degrees from a vertical plane when detached

• must not move under its own weight

• any rolling wheels must be covered

• must have a positive stop, which is an immovable component that impedes motion of the gate

If the gate is determined to be an immediate threat to safety, any use of the gate must immediately stop until necessary repairs are made by a licensed contractor within a prescribed period.

Government Relations Update on Gate Safety Legislation in New York

The New York/Long Island Chapter of the American Fence Association, and specifically the New York Pool Code Working Group have been working to create better code language regarding the installation of pool latches in the state of New York.

In January, Senator Gallivan introduced S7731 on behalf of the New York/Long Island Chapter, which would amend the New York Residential Code in a way that would agree with both ASTM and IPSC standards. The legislation is making its way through the New York Senate Legislature where it currently sits in the Senate Housing, Construction and Community Development Committee.

Alex’s Law was drafted with the support and collaboration of the American Fence Association, the largest membership association for the fence industry, with over 1,400 member companies and 19 chapters across the United States.

“The American Fence Association is proud to support Alex’s Law to help improve gate safety,” says Michael Reed, executive director of the AFA. “Our organization has worked closely with the Quanbeck family on industry initiatives that increase awareness, educate communities, and raise standards to eliminate gate-related injuries and deaths. By working together, community leaders, code enforcement officials, and industry professionals can improve gate design, installation, and maintenance of gates so that no more parents must suffer the death of a child. We applaud the work by Assemblymember Connolly and strongly urge the passage of this important legislation.”

Trex and REI Co-op Team Up to Expand Signature Camping Experience Near Bryce Canyon National Park

For the past four years, Trex Company and REI Co-op have partnered to divert plastic film waste collected at the specialty outdoor retailer’s stores and fulfillment centers for use in the making of Trex’s eco-friendly, long-lasting and beautiful composite decking. When it came time for REI to expand its Signature Camp near Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, it was only natural that the brands work together to highlight the full-circle efforts at REI’s private campsite. Nature lovers can now enjoy the great outdoors from tent set-ups situated on elevated platforms made from Trex composite decking.

“At Trex we believe the best memories are made outdoors so it made perfect sense to partner with a company like REI whose entire brand is built around the outdoor experience,” explains Leslie Adkins, group vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex.

A Full-circle, Full-cycle Partnership

Through its NexTrex® Recycling Program, Trex partners with thousands of forward-thinking organizations and retailers across the country to responsibly dispose of polyethylene (PE) plastic film, a key ingredient in the company’s highperformance, wood-alternative decking, which is made from up to 95% recycled and reclaimed materials. One of the largest recyclers of plastic film in North America, Trex has upcycled more than 5 billion pounds of PE waste in the making of its outdoor living products over the past three decades.

REI joined the NexTrex commercial recycling program in 2020 and in that time has contributed

nearly two million pounds of plastic film to the program through collections across its stores along with contributions from its fulfillment centers. These efforts further the company’s goal of achieving zero waste in its operations, which requires diverting at least 90% of waste from landfill or waste-to-energy.

Bringing these efforts full circle to REI’s campsite, the company worked with Trex to build 10 elevated decking platforms at its Signature Camp near Bryce Canyon. The deck boards used in these platforms contain the equivalent of more than 700,000 pieces of plastic film diverted from landfills.

“Creating access to the outdoors for all is core to who we are and how we design guided adventure experiences at REI,” says Justin Wood, REI experiences director. “Our relationship with Trex helps us reduce our footprint by diverting plastic waste from landfills while also providing durable and attractive recycled materials for the construction of our private REI Signature Camps. That’s meaningful and important to REI and to our customers.”

Trex Transcend® Lineage™ Decking: A Natural Choice

Such a special location called for a special product. Trex Transcend® Lineage™ decking proved a natural choice due to its authentic wood look and unique composition. This collection features an elevated aesthetic with subtle, elegant graining that delivers the aesthetic and feel of wood.

The light, honey-brown Biscayne hue offers the perfect complement to the breathtaking Bryce

Canyon setting. Further enhancing its appeal and suitability for this particular project, Lineage decking is engineered with heat-mitigating technology in the shell to reflect the sun and keep boards cooler, making it Trex’s coolest decking to date – literally.

Another reason REI chose Trex decking for its Bryce Canyon campsite is practicality. Engineered to endure the snow and sun, the boards feature a proprietary, high-traffic formulation and ultra-durable integrated shell that resists stains, scratches and mold. They won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter and will retain their color and luxurious finish for decades.

Maintaining Trex composite decking is completely hassle-free. No sanding, staining or painting is ever needed, and spills wash off easily with just soap and water. This equates to more efficient operations for the Co-op’s adventure travel operator due to less maintenance at the start of the season and throughout the guiding season.

TimberTech® Sets New Industry Standard with Top-Rated Fire Resistance for Composite Decking: Best Choice for Fire Zones

The AZEK Company Inc. has announced that its TimberTech Advanced PVC Vintage Collection® and Landmark Collection® are the first in the composite decking industry to receive an Ignition Resistant designation from California’s State Fire Marshal. Ignition Resistance, as defined by the California State Fire Marshal, and by the surrounding states

Set multiple posts faster.

that have adopted its standards, refers to building materials that resist catching fire or burning easily and that may slow the spread of flames. The new Ignition Resistant designation for these Advanced PVC Collections underscores TimberTech's commitment to providing homeowners with not only beautiful and durable outdoor living solutions but also products that help enhance the safety of their outdoor spaces by adding an extra layer of protection against fire hazards.

"TimberTech is not just leading but revolutionizing the decking industry through innovation,” says Jonathan Skelly, president of residential and commercial for AZEK. “These fire designations underscore our relentless pursuit to not only meet but to exceed fire safety standards. Considering the staggering number of over 46 million homes across 70,000 U.S. communities at risk from the impacts of wildfire, our comprehensive portfolio can help

consumers harden their homes to reduce risk and increase resistance to heat, flames, and embers typical of most wildfires.”

In addition to the new Ignition Resistant designation, TimberTech’s Vintage and Landmark Collections hold a Class A Flame Spread Rating. Class A is the best rating available and indicates a material is in the highest range of resistance to flames. This means that in a fire, flames will spread slower across the deck surface. Class A Flame Spread Rated decking will resist catching fire and will not readily contribute to the spread of flames. TimberTech’s Advanced PVC Decking also meets Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) compliance standards. Local building codes in WUI zones mandate fire-resistant materials for construction projects, including decks. WUI-Compliant materials resist flame spread and catching fire due to flying embers.

“The significance of these ratings cannot be overstated, especially for homeowners like me living in California and those living in other areas prone to wildfires or those simply seeking to enhance the safety of their homes,” says Sam Toole, chief marketing officer for AZEK. “No other decking matches the beauty or performance of our Vintage and Landmark Collections and features top-rated fire resistance.”

TimberTech’s recently introduced Aluminum Framing product pairs perfectly with Advanced PVC decking. Because it is made of aluminum, it is particularly well-suited for areas prone to fires as compared to wood, enabling TimberTech to provide homeowners with a comprehensive wood alternative decking and framing solution.

L&C Enterprises - USA: A 2024 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch Award Winner

L&C Enterprises-USA, parent company of Delta Fence and Construction, was recognized as a 2024 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch, presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.

Hired in 2013 as a laborer and working his way up to Vice- President, Kevin Sodermark remarks, “Coming to this company and then seeing a future in it is very encouraging. To be able to be a part of one expansion and now another expansion, along with being a part of bringing people in, training people, and seeing them succeed, has been very good. We are fortunate to have 15 full-time dedicated staff. This award is great recognition for them and an exciting time for all of us.”

To be nominated for the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch Award, companies must

be second stage, defined as having 6 to 99 fulltime-equivalent employees while generating between $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue. Additional requirements include that the companies must demonstrate the intent and capacity to grow, be privately held and located in Michigan. Judges from economic and entrepreneurship development organizations across the state annually select the winners. Michigan Celebrates received over 500 nominations for the 2024 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch Award. The businesses who are selected by the judges go through a vetting process prior to the final decision. When asked for advice to new business owners, Sodermark says, “I think the best thing that I’ve found is to go slow, a lot of times

companies try to grow too fast.”

The natural growth of the fencing business contributed to early L&C successes. Ron Chouinard, President and Owner of L&C Enterprises-USA/ Delta Fence & Construction adds, we started out trying to stay an hour from the office. This keeps us mostly in the Upper Peninsula. We have branched out there into Wisconsin. I do want to express that we do such good quality work that people request us to come out there. They call us up because they have heard of our reputation, and we strive for quality work. We get the job done and the customer is always happy.”

Standard Guidelines for Temporary Fence Applications

Are you installing temporary fencing or are you considering? This diversification within your company is a great initial and recurring revenue opportunity. Let’s discuss the specifics: Temporary fencing is a crucial aspect of many construction sites, events, and outdoor activities where temporary barriers are needed to ensure safety, security, and crowd control. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed standards to ensure that temporary fences meet certain criteria for effectiveness, durability, and safety. One such standard is F33429, which provides guidelines for temporary fence applications. Let's delve into what this standard entails and why it's important.

What is F3342-19?

F3342-19 is a standard set by ASTM International, a globally recognized organization that develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. This standard specifically addresses the requirements for temporary fencing systems, covering various aspects such as materials, design, installation, and maintenance.

Key Guidelines of F3342-19

Material Specifications: F3342-19 outlines the material requirements for temporary fencing components such as panels, posts, bases, and connectors. These materials must meet certain strength, durability, and corrosion resistance standards to ensure the effectiveness and longevity of the fence.

Design Considerations: The standard provides guidelines for the design of temporary fencing systems, including factors such as height, spacing between posts, and overall stability. These considerations are crucial to ensure that the fence can withstand environmental factors and external forces without compromising safety.

Installation Procedures: Proper installation is essential for the effectiveness and stability of temporary fences. F3342-19 specifies the recommended procedures for installing various types of temporary fencing systems, including both freestanding and anchored designs. This includes guidelines for post placement, anchoring methods, and stability requirements.

Safety Requirements: Safety is paramount when it comes to temporary fencing, especially in environments where there is a risk of injury or property damage. The standard includes provisions to ensure that temporary fencing systems meet certain safety requirements, such as minimizing sharp edges or protrusions that could cause harm.

Maintenance Recommendations: To ensure the ongoing effectiveness of temporary fencing systems, F3342-19 provides recommendations for maintenance procedures. This includes regular inspections to identify any damage or deterioration, as well as guidelines for repairs or replacements as needed.

Importance of F3342-19

Adhering to the guidelines outlined in F3342-19 offers several benefits:

Safety: By following the standard's specifications for materials, design, and installation, temporary fencing systems can help prevent accidents, injuries, and unauthorized access to restricted areas.

Durability: The requirements for materials and maintenance outlined in F3342-19 ensure that temporary fences are capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions and prolonged use without significant deterioration.

Compliance: Following ASTM standards demonstrates a commitment to quality and compliance with industry best practices, which can be important for regulatory compliance and

liability protection.

Efficiency: Standardized guidelines streamline the design, installation, and maintenance processes for temporary fencing systems, resulting in more efficient and cost-effective solutions.

In conclusion, F3342-19 plays a vital role in ensuring the effectiveness, safety, and durability of temporary fencing systems used in various applications. By providing guidelines for materials, design, installation, and maintenance, this standard helps to establish consistent quality and reliability across temporary fencing products and installations. Compliance with F3342-19 not only promotes safety and security but also contributes to overall efficiency and effectiveness in temporary barrier solutions.

Karl Stinson

Leading his family-owned company, Elite Fence, Karl Stinson says its success is the result of his mother and father’s dedication and work ethic. Together, with his sister Kristina as CFO, and his dad as president, they continue to focus on quality, safety, and top-notch customer relations.

WHEN WAS ELITE FENCE FOUNDED, AND BY WHOM?

My parents Harry and Karen Stinson in 1986.

WHAT LED TO ITS BEGINNING?

My grandfather Arlis Stinson had an installation company, Michigan Fence and Supply, that he started in 1965. My father Harry, worked for him selling and installing fences. As trends changed in the 1908s and aluminum fence began to become popular, my father began selling and installing various brands of aluminum fencing.

After a bad experience with a vendor in the fall of 1985, my mother and father decided to go into the aluminum fence manufacturing business for themselves. In 1986, they created American Aluminum and Steel Fence and started selling to Michigan Fence and Supply and other local Michigan-based companies. In 1987, they changed the name to Elite Aluminum Ornamental Fence Products, joined the AFA and began to expand the business into a national supplier.

HOW DID YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE FAMILY BUSINESS COME ABOUT?

We grew up in the business. As kids, my sister, Kristina, and I would often be found helping around the business. I was off helping in the shop, and she was helping our mother in the offices.

I officially started my career in the panel assembly department in the summer of 1999 at 16 years old, then over the years, I worked in various departments in the shop and helped get our first powder coating line installed and running.

It was a natural evolution for me to move into sales in my early 20s. I had all the product knowledge needed since I had worked in every department on the shop floor. Dick Fromm taught me so much about sales and how to talk to customers. After about five years in sales, my parents started offering me opportunities to grow in the company and kept pushing me to challenge my level of comfort. I can 100% attribute our family’s success to the hard work and dedication our parents put into Elite, and the work ethic that they taught us.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A FAMILY-OWNED MANUFACTURING COMPANY FOR A CONTRACTOR OR CUSTOMER?

Being a family-owned company allows us to focus on customer service, long-term customer relationships and quality products. We take pride that most of our customers have been with us for over 15 years, and they appreciate the level of service we can provide to them daily.

As the industry has changed over the years, being family-owned has afforded us the ability to keep our quality standards high and provide the same or new products that our customers have come to expect from Elite.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST LINE OF PRODUCTS SOLD?

Currently, our aluminum fences and gates are the largest products we produce. We have recently added decorative aluminum pedestrian railing to our product line and have had great success with

this product on a few large projects along the I-75 corridor in Michigan.

This year, we are bringing multiple new products to market, including aluminum louvered fence and gates, aluminum privacy fence, a hybrid privacy fence allowing customers to purchase or supply their own PVC infill with aluminum post and rails and lastly, we are launching a new aluminum railing product line this year.

HOW ARE YOUR FACILITIES SET UP?

All our products are manufactured with domestically sourced materials within our own facilities, utilizing processes developed internally over many years of experience.

In Chesterfield, Michigan, we have 270,000 square feet of manufacturing space; this is where all our manufacturing takes place. All the raw aluminum extrusions come into our Missouri location for fabrication. We take pride in how clean, safe, and organized we keep our plants.

We apply an AAMA 2604 powder coated finish to all our products in Michigan, using our stateof-the-art powder coating line that has been certified to exceed the requirements of AAMA 2605 standards. Our powder coating line is one of the largest in the industry, being able to powder coat Ziptrack™ aluminum cantilever gates that are 10’ high x 53’ long and 2’ in width in production. In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, we have 26,500 square feet of light assembly and distribution along with another 22,250 square feet of light assembly and distribution in Hudson, Florida.

HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE?

We have approximately 110 employees in Chesterfield, 10 in Murfreesboro and 10 in Hudson.

78 JUNE 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA
Karl and Kristina in March of 1987 posing while fence sections were being set up for the company's first brochure.

HOW MUCH HAS YOUR BUSINESS INCREASED IN THE LAST 5 – 10 YEARS?

From 2014 – 2021, our production volumes increased 96%. Since 2021, we have seen volumes return to slightly lower levels and the sales seem to be trending towards a more seasonal volume trend again.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WHILE ON THE JOB?

I really enjoy being able to interact with the employees and customers. I spend a fair amount of time each day walking the plant floor and interacting with our employees, making myself available to team leaders to answer any questions they may have.

Talking with customers and getting feedback on how we are doing and new products they would like to see, or improvements to existing products, means a lot to me and I enjoy these challenges.

WHAT FAMILY MEMBERS ARE PART OF THE COMPANY?

My father Harry Stinson, remains as president. While not active in the day-to-day business anymore, he is often on the plant floor. He possesses over 50 years of fence installation and manufacturing knowledge, and he brings unmeasurable value when questions arise. In 2021, my mother unfortunately passed away; Kristina became the CFO and has continued to grow as a leader in our company.

WHAT IS A WORK-RELATED CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED AT SOME POINT IN YOUR CAREER AND HOW DID YOU SOLVE IT?

One of the hardest things I have been faced with was learning to separate emotion from business decisions. I started talking with other business owners and asking questions and taking advice from them. We hired a business coach, and I devoted time to reading and learning ways to overcome the struggles. I found myself trying out new approaches and techniques with each situation, I kept evaluating how it was working out and kept changing it until I felt I was getting the desired results.

WHAT IS WITHIN YOUR JOB DUTIES AS CEO?

There probably isn’t one title that covers all the different duties you perform daily as a business owner. I oversee the sales, production, and product development end of our business. I play a key role between sales and production, often working with sales staff and the production team to ensure that the customers’ requirements are being met.

During my daily walks throughout the facility, I answer production questions, help solve problems, and make sure our team leaders have what they need to meet production goals.

I really enjoy the time spent with our sales team helping to build long-term relationships with customers. Our family has always seen this as key to our success, and what keeps us growing year after year.

GATE SAFETY HAS ALWAYS BEEN PARAMOUNT IN OUR INDUSTRY AND CONTINUES TO BE A PRIORITY. WHAT DOES ELITE FENCE DO TO PROMOTE GATE SAFETY?

We’ve always been committed to manufacturing products that help our customers fulfill safety requirements for their homes and businesses.

One of our core products, Lifegard, was developed in 1997 to comply with BOCA pool code and to this day is one of the most robust and reliable pool code compliant ornamental products in the fence market.

Similarly, our Ziptrack™ aluminum cantilever gates have undergone a number of engineering improvements to remain compliant with ASTM F2200 and pertinent UL 325 requirements.

We are committed to continual improvements in safety and usability of our products. We are aware of recent issues brought to light by groups such as The Hummingbird Alliance and our team continues to innovate and develop new ways to

manufacture and install all of our gate systems to be as safe as possible. It has been exciting to watch as our industry has grown and become more conscientious of safety. Elite is absolutely committed to that growth and welcomes any collaboration with other gate manufacturers to review how we can make all gate and products in the fence industry as safe as possible.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WHILE NOT ON THE JOB?

I like spending time with my wife and am most excited about becoming a father to our baby boy arriving in July. When I'm not with them, I enjoy attending concerts and being with friends and family.

DO YOU PREFER MONDAYS OR FRIDAYS AND WHY?

I would have to say Saturdays, actually. I can get so much done in a few hours on a Saturday without interruptions. I listen to some great music in the office and get lost in my work.

Using Leadership and Management to Create Business Impact

Like many trades, our industry is entering a period of rapid change and evolution, and whether you’re an installer or a supplier, understanding the distinction between leadership and management is critical. Both roles are important to the success of any organization, yet they require different mindsets and skills. Drawing on insights from General Stanley McChrystal's book Leaders: Myth and Reality, exploring leadership and how it compares to management, sheds light on how these mindsets differ and how they can work together to help you grow your business.

The Differences Between Leadership and Management

General McChrystal emphasizes that leadership is the ability to tackle complex adaptive challenges that require learning and cannot be solved by traditional approaches. Leaders are tasked with steering the organization through uncharted waters, inspiring innovation, and creating a culture of learning and adaptation. On the other hand, management tends to focus on technical challenges—problems that have known solutions and can be addressed through improving existing skills and processes.

Based on his experience in a changing Army, McChrystal suggests that leadership is less about command authority and more about empowering teams and individuals. A true leader builds consensus and fosters an environment where team members feel they have a genuine stake in the outcome. Managers direct activities, ensuring tasks are completed, resources are allocated effectively, and operations run smoothly within the set framework.

As we extend those ideas into today’s fence, gate, and perimeter security industry, leadership is about creating teams of people who can innovate and who we trust to execute autonomously. In contrast, management often operates within strict hierarchies, maintaining order and ensuring compliance with established procedures and standards.

This brings us to a fundamental realization. In today’s organization, we must be able to do both. We must be able to lead people and manage projects and things. Recognizing and embracing these different approaches enhances our ability to create true impact.

Developing a Leaders Mindset: A Path to Greater Impact

We have many good managers in our industry, but improving our own leadership abilities and the leadership capacity of those around us requires effort in several key areas, each contributing to the capacity to create impact.

Commit to Lifelong Learning

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Embrace continuous learning as a core aspect of your leadership philosophy. Engage with industry insights, explore new technologies, and keep abreast of market trends. This commitment enhances your expertise and sets a powerful example for your team. If you embrace lifelong learning, you’ll build a culture of curiosity that will drive innovation.

Get a Coach to Guide You

Even at the top of their game, professional athletes still get coaching. The right coach or mentor can be a catalyst for extraordinary growth. This partnership will allow you to gain insights into your leadership style, uncover new perspectives, and challenge your assumptions. Whether navigating complex challenges or aiming to reach new heights, a coach can guide you in refining your leadership approach and achieving your goals.

Focus First on Credibility

According to James Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge, credibility is the foundation of leadership. Leaders must "be a model of the values and behaviors they expect of others." To build credibility, consistently demonstrate integrity, be

transparent, and deliver on your promises. This reliability creates trust and strengthens your influence, enabling you to lead more effectively.

Take Care of Yourself, So You Can Take Care of Others

Leadership is demanding; it requires physical stamina and emotional resilience. Prioritizing your well-being through exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient rest ensures you can perform at your best and effectively support your team.

Closing Thoughts

The distinction between leading and managing is crucial to organizational success in our industry. By understanding and applying these principles and committing to personal growth in leadership, we position ourselves as competent resource managers and visionary leaders who drive innovation and inspire excellence in our teams. Step into your leadership potential. It’s about making an impact, shaping a successful future in uncertain times, and leaving a legacy that transcends the immediate boundaries of your own company. We have great managers. Now, let’s lead with vision and forge a path of unprecedented growth and success in our industry.
