Codelocks has enhanced its Gate Solutions by Codelocks’ range with the addition of the XtraD Heavy Duty Gate Lock. Codelocks’ single point, bolt through, fixed gate lock is specifically designed for gates where a coded lock is the preferred method of entry for secured perimeters and outdoor areas. The XtraD Heavy Duty Gate Lock is a robust, durable access control solution designed to withstand the toughest conditions.
The XtraD Gate Lock is engineered to work with Codelocks’ heavy duty CL500 and CL600 mechanical locks for basic access control, and the electronic CL5000 lock for enhanced flexibility with time-sensitive codes. These options make the XtraD Gate Lock suitable for a wide range of gated access control environments, including those with high traffic use and in corrosive environments.
The range of options available for the XtraD Gate Lock include a marine grade finish for harsh outdoor and coastal environments. Lock options operated by either a knob or a lever are available.
The XtraD Gate Lock is especially suitable for public facilities that close to visitors at certain times to prevent access by unauthorized people but allow access to workers for off-hours maintenance. It is also a workable solution for industrial, commercial and building sites to provide site access for workers and delivery drivers without having to have a gate operator on hand.
Matt Welty, vice president at Codelocks, says, “Perimeter gates, and especially its locking systems, are crucial to the overall security of commercial properties and public areas like tennis courts, schools, parks and playgrounds. The XtraD is a long-lasting gate solution, with the convenience and quality of Codelocks’ mechanical and electronic locks, to withstand harsh conditions while providing secure and reliable access control.”
Codelocks’ XtraD Gate Lock has a full stainless-steel construction for corrosion resistance and durability and has been tested to over a million cycles. The heavy-duty latch bolt with a separate deadlocking plunger bolt can be adjusted up to 5/8” – to accommodate variations in the gap between gate and post – without the need for lock removal.

An automatic gate goes beyond just providing an access point to a property, but for many homeowners it adds an extra layer of security and comfort. However, homeowners should not neglect gate maintenance as it is crucial to maintain performance as well as ensure safety for people, animals and property.
“Preventative maintenance is important for several reasons,” says Cesare Battistello, technical assistance and training manager of Nice Italy. “Regular care will significantly reduce the risk of accidents, prolong the life of the gate and all its
1 3/9/23 9:57 AM
components, consume less energy when running efficiently, and the gate will always be up to date on safety standards required by law.”
Routinely repairing a gate system reduces the risk of unexpected repair costs or a complete system replacement.
“A homeowner may think they are spending more to keep up with constant maintenance, but really they are making an investment now that could save them money
later,” says Battistello. “The goal of staying on top of maintenance is to prevent failures or premature replacements.”
Maintaining a gate and its appearance also impacts the value of a property. A well-maintained entrance makes a great first impression.
“Potential buyers scrutinize everything. If a gate is left in disrepair, the entire property could be crossed off their list right from the start,” says Battistello.
Most importantly, automatic gate maintenance is a legal requirement. Battistello recommends reviewing gate safety and requirements with homeowners.
“Always make sure after a project is completed the homeowner is comfortable in their knowledge about their new gate. Walk them through spotting signs of wear, rust or structural damage. It’s also important to remind them that debris and dirt should be removed to not interfere with operation. Help the customer understand and spot technical problems so that they know when to call for help,” says Battistello.

For more than 30 years, the Trex name has been synonymous with highperformance, low-maintenance composite decking – but that’s about to change. With the extensive range of new products the brand has on tap for 2025, Trex Company is primed to expand its leadership beyond decking to elevate the brand as a total outdoor living resource.
“2025 will be the year of railing for Trex,” says Adam Zambanini, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Trex Company. “After bolstering
In preparation for the 2025 deck building season, Trex is rolling out an expanded railing lineup designed to mirror its industry-leading decking portfolio and is poised to solidify the brand as a formidable force in the railing category. Among the latest railing additions are new steel, aluminum, cable and glass systems, along with enhancements to the Trex Select® composite railing system, designed to offer homeowners more choices beyond vinyl railing and wood railing. These launches firmly establish Trex as the #1 brand in decking and residential railing.
Trex® Enhance™ Steel Railing
Delivering affordability with a simple design that highlights any view, Trex Enhance Steel Railing offers a classic profile designed for function, style and performance. For easy and speedy installation, this line features pre-assembled panels and posts with pre-mounted brackets and carries a 15-year limited residential warranty. The perennially popular Charcoal Black color offers a view-optimizing complement to any setting.
Trex® Select™ Aluminum Railing
Offering a step up in weatherability, Trex Select Aluminum Railing combines elegance and simplicity with easy-toinstall panels available in a choice of Charcoal Black or a brand-new railing color – Burnished Bronze. The clean, modern design enhances sightlines while providing durability and ease of maintenance backed by a 25-year limited residential warranty.
our decking portfolio with launches like Trex Signature® and Trex Transcend® Lineage™ and bringing disruptive innovation to the fastener category with our expanded Trex Hideaway® collection, we are now focused on leading the railing category as prominently as we do decking, with the category’s broadest and most diverse selection of profiles, materials and solutions.”
Trex® Select™ Steel
Mesh Panels & Railing Kits
Mixed materials continue to trend in outdoor spaces. Composite posts paired with metal infill are the hallmarks of Trex Select railing. In addition to classic round black aluminum balusters or square white composite balusters, Trex has added a new steel black mesh infill to this line that exudes rustic charm with an industrial edge. Created to address regional preferences, the mesh panels feature 4”x4” welded cross points and are offered in sizes to fit 6’ or 8’ rail systems. These panels are sold as part of a complete Trex Select Railing kit or separately with hardware that allows for mounting to wood for enhanced versatility to complement a variety of home and backyard settings.
Trex Select® Classic Railing in Charcoal Black
Previously offered exclusively in Trex’s Classic White finish, Trex Select Railing is now available with composite rails and posts in Charcoal Black. Offering a fashionable alternative to vinyl railing, this new color pairs perfectly with a choice of round black aluminum balusters or the new steel black mesh infill to deliver a sleek, modern aesthetic with a 25-year limited residential warranty.
Trex Select® and Trex Enhance® All-in-one Railing Post Kits
In August, Trex introduced All-In-One Post Kits for its Trex Select and Trex Enhance railing. Designed to simplify the railing purchase and installation process, these kits come complete
with a 4”x4” composite post sleeve, cap and skirt packaged together for easy ordering, stocking, shipping and installation, while also reducing packaging waste at the job site. Finished in Trex’s Classic White, the Enhance Kit comes in a standard 48” railing height while the Select Kit is available in 40”, 48” or 54” heights, allowing customers to use components as-is or trim as needed for a cost-effective installation. In both cases, railing kits and brackets are sold separately.
Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable and Frameless Glass Railing Systems
Trex has also introduced two specialty railing options with elevated sophistication and design flexibility for premium builds. Blending modern minimalism with simplified installation, the new Trex Signature X-Series introduced cable and frameless glass to the Trex railing portfolio.
Differentiating these offerings in the marketplace is the innovative X-Series™ Post that anchors the systems. This versatile post not only accommodates stainless-steel cables or frameless glass panels but was also designed to accommodate a variety of infills and attachments for future additions to the X-Series line. Furthermore, with its modular design, the X-Series Post can be used as an end, line or corner post, laying the foundation for a SKU-efficient approach to railing. Packaged in easy-to-order kits, X-Series Railings are as easy to stock, sell and ship as they are to install and maintain.
“Cable and glass railings are notoriously complicated but everything about Trex Signature X-Series Railing is engineered to make things easier for deck builders,” Zambanini says. “From the novel spring-loaded cables for optimal tension management to the simplified

installation and easy-to-stock and sell kits, these innovative systems raise the bar on railing.”
Like all Trex Signature Railing, the X-Series profiles are crafted with premium-grade aluminum and durable powder-coated surfaces to deliver effortless style, exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. Enhancing their appeal even further, all Trex Signature Railing products are now backed by an increased 50-year limited residential warranty.
“This comprehensive railing portfolio equips our channel partners to excel in the competition at every price point, delivering the enhanced Trex aesthetics and performance that set them apart,” explains Zambanini. “Furthermore, these solutions are easy to specify, order and install, presenting a compelling value proposition to distributors, dealers and deck builders.”
To help channel partners capitalize on the growing popularity of heat mitigation, Trex is adding new colors to its successful Lineage collection and, in a first for the category, expanding access to this technology by introducing two new colors with heat-mitigating technology to the Trex Enhance® decking line. Engineered with heat-mitigating properties in the shell, these boards stay cooler* than most other composite decking products of a similar color.
New for 2025, Trex has added two new hues to its sophisticated and popular Lineage range:
• Hatteras – a neutral brown inspired by windswept dunes that invites you to sit back, relax and savor the unmatched beauty of where surf and sand meet.
• Salt Flat – a natural symphony of silvers, whites and greys that is sure to be a favorite among those seeking serenity and simplicity in their outdoor spaces.
Trex is the first composite decking brand to make heat mitigation more broadly available to homeowners by adding two new colors to its affordable Enhance decking collection.
• Honey Grove – a mix of browns, greys and onyx black streaks that harmonize into a warm, essential color evoking the bounty of our natural world.
• Tide Pool – a misty grey that draws inspiration from nature’s intricate artwork created by the gentle hand of the tides.
Trex will continue to roll out its Trex Hideaway® Fastener Collection in 2025. Launched earlier this year, this introduction disrupted the industry by establishing Trex as a market leader in the decking hardware category and solidifying Trex as a comprehensive one-stop supplier for decking, railing and deckrelated hardware.
Featuring more than 120 SKUs, the Trex Hideaway® Fastener Collection includes solutions for every composite deck fastening need, including:
• Trex Hideaway® Color Match Composite Decking & Fascia Screws – designed to work seamlessly with all Trex decking collections to deliver a superior drive experience, optimal stability and a mushroom-free finish.
• Trex Hideaway® Universal Hidden Fastener Clips – industry-leading fastener clips that offer a strong and seamless connection for secure installation, every time.
• Trex Hideaway® Composite Decking & Fascia Plugs – featuring proprietary construction made from the same shellstock, embossing rolls, and pigments used to create Trex decking for the best possible color and texture matching.
“This collection brings meaningful innovation to what has been a relatively stagnant category,” notes Zambanini. “They afford greater quality control and ease of use for installers and give our channel partners a competitive advantage by allowing them to deliver end-to-end solutions from one supplier for a seamless, worry-free deck-building experience from the joists up.”
The Trex Hideaway Fastener Collection components are backed by the same warranties as the decking they secure. When paired with Trex Transcend® decking, for instance, fasteners and accessories are backed by 50 years of assurance.
“Engineering what’s next leads to what’s new. That’s why we continue to innovate and expand our selection of outdoor living products,” adds Zambanini. “With the latest additions to our line, Trex now offers the most comprehensive and cohesive decking and railing solutions. With everything you need now available from the industry leader, it’s easy to make every deck totally Trex.”

FENCETECH 2025 will provide an opportunity to learn about the standout performance of the Mechanical Earth Drill by Little Beaver.
“Every year, FENCETECH gives us the opportunity to speak with both current and prospective customers face-to-face about the benefits our Mechanical Earth Drills bring to fencing operations,” says Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver. “It’s a great time to educate fencers about how they can speed up post hole digging projects and showcase our full range of earth drills.”
Featuring a 360-rpm operating speed, the drills are faster and produce cleaner holes than similar competitive units. The compact design allows fencing operations to access areas unreachable by skid steer-mounted augers.
A steel torque tube protects against dangerous kickback should the Mechanical Earth Drill hit a root or rock underground, sending the impact to the engine carrier instead of the operator. A centrifugal clutch prevents the transmission from overloading when encountering a buried object. Paired with a heavy-duty transmission, this feature limits breakdowns in the field.
Additional high-quality features that reduce maintenance and extend life include heavy-duty transmissions with cooling fins for quick heat dissipation and improved longevity. Furthermore, the company powder coats all steel features to enhance strength and durability.
“We will showcase our Mechanical Earth Drill along with our Hydraulic Earth Drill, UN-Towable Hydraulic Earth Drill and a display of our snap-on augers,” Haynes says. “Our team will be available to speak with fencers and help them choose the best drill and auger for each fencing and post hole digging project.”

Noodle Link and Noodle Link Plus, the two most popular noodle fences, will be on display. Get a closer look at PrivacyLink and IndustrialLink with 3.5” x 5” chain link mesh. These sturdy, robust chain link fences feature double-wall, factory-inserted slats with center supports for extra durability. A vinyl wood slat option is also available, that looks like wood but wear sbetter.
PrivacyLink’s full line of privacy slats ccan be inserted into a new or previously installed chain link fence. Their three most popular slats will be on display at FENCETECH: Ultimate, Bottom-Locking, and EZ slats. Locinox will bring a range of innovations to FENCETECH 2025, including the latest in gate automation, child safety, and access control solutions.
With VENUS, Locinox introduced its first motorized gate operator made for pedestrian gates. VENUS combines core values—easy installation, versatility, and durability—with advanced features that make it a standout choice. Equipped with a brushless, reversible motor, VENUS is built to handle high-traffic areas and remains unaffected by pedestrian force, delivering consistent performance without wear. This energy-efficient operator is ideal for busy urban areas, campuses, and commercial spaces where secure and reliable gate closing is essential. VENUS can work alone or with access control to open gates at low energy without needing extra safety sensors. Built for all kinds of weather, VENUS keeps running smoothly in extreme temperatures and conditions.
Also on display will be a comprehensive child-safety solution. The CARACAL 180° gate closer offers adjustable closing speed and smooth damping, with a fiberglass-reinforced housing to protect its components. It pairs with the SERVAL spring hinge, featuring adjustable closing force at the gate’s bottom, and the NOSTEP anti-climbing device, which prevents the hinge from being used as a step. For added safety, the FORTIMA magnetic childsafe latch, installed at least 54” above ground, prevents children from accessing restricted areas with its double pull-up mechanism and push-down resistance for extra security.
In addition to gate automation and child safety, Locinox continues to lead in market trends.
Insert locks, which fit seamlessly within the gate profile, are increasingly popular as a sleek privacy solution. With growing demand for access control to enhance security and flexibility, VERA—a battery-powered code lock—integrates seamlessly with Locinox’s insert locks.
Attendees can also learn about VOLTA and VITA, offering varied access control options. VOLTA is a surface-mounted lock with an external battery-powered keypad, and VITA is a mechanical code lock for insert locks. Visit with the Locinox team at FENCETECH 2025 to explore how these innovations can make gate systems more durable, secure, and userfriendly.

will not rust. Powercoat™ finish warranted for life.
Ultra developed their high-strength Ultrum™ Alloy to be as strong as steel, but to never rust. It’s the look and feel of traditional wrought-iron fencing, with a low-maintenance, warranted powder-coated finish.
Does the number of options for panic exit hardware leave you feeling overwhelmed? Curious to see how a panic bar can be installed on a polyvinyl gate? Wondering if you can add access control to an existing chain link gate?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions or have others relating to gate access products and technology advances, be sure to stop by the DAC Industries booth at FENCETECH25. They’ll have new displays featuring several different installation scenarios, and expert staff will be available to answer questions and discuss installation scenarios.
DAC Industries has been a manufacturer and supplier of quality gate hardware since 1985. The company was founded by fence installers familiar with problems and challenges that can arise on site, and their product line has grown over the years by recognizing those problems and working on a solution to make installation easier. The smaller size of the business allows DAC to innovate and produce products quickly. This also gives them the flexibility to create customized items and to make modifications and design components to translate door hardware to the fencing world. DAC panic hardware kits debuted 21 years ago at FENCETECH 2003. As the company has grown, they have been excited to share their product advances with industry representatives at this event each year. The DAC team is excited to showcase some of their new products and success stories in Salt Lake City at FENCETECH25.

Its lightweight, rust-free design offers lasting protection and security, with a sleek, modern look that complements any property. “Problem-Solving” might be the buzz phrase for 2025 when it comes to fencing for sports facilities. In fact, most of what drives the design, manufacturing and construction industry forward in sports is understanding what consumers want.
The American Sports Builders Association provides an overview of key trends:
Noise Reduction in Pickleball: “We are seeing an uptick in the interest in fence-hung noise reduction systems for pickleball courts and also for mixed sports facilities,” says Randy Futty of Putterman, LLC. “Pickleball is also driving the need for padding to be added to fences. Vertical, fence-attached padding is often used in court conversion projects where overrun distances are smaller than those suggested by USA Pickleball and the American Sports Builders Association.”
“Wall padding on chain link fencing is a popular safety feature for most sports facilities; however, planning is important,” notes Ken Robinson of Sports Venue Padding. “When wall padding is installed on fences that are not designed to bear the additional weight, the consequences can be dangerous or costly. Verifying chain link fence integrity for potential safety padding requirements is key.”
Heightened Awareness of Light Pollution: The movement toward LED lighting has resulted in lessened light trespass, glare and sky glow; however, industry members say windscreens are still necessary to cut down on the potential for complaints from neighbors.
Safety for Players: In the youth sports space, where athletes will attempt the challenging plays they see in pro baseball and softball, there is a growing demand for top rail guards and fence padding to protect players even when the minimum overruns are met.
Safety for Spectators: In baseball and softball, David Moxley of Sportsfield Specialties notes that the press for ball containment has “led to a large transition from chain-link barriers to tensioned netting ball safety systems.” He says netting systems are prized in the industry for “safety, durability and
spectator visibility, all while being the lightest and strongest on the market. The lighter hanging weight and lesser wind, snow and/or ice loading all equate to being able to use smaller poles, or farther spanning poles, and with using smaller foundations that inferior netting or chain-link materials would not be able to do.”
“Heights of backstops are trending upward, with 30-foot heights now considered standard,” says Benji Brye of Beacon Athletics. “Requests are increasingly coming in for heights of 40-foot, 50-foot or even taller, as fields are being constructed in more confined spaces.”
“There’s a noticeable trend away from traditional chain link fencing backstops on baseball and softball fields, even at JV levels,” adds Brye. “More facilities, especially at higher levels, are opting for netting solutions instead.”
Awareness of Wind Loads: While facility owners appreciate windscreens and privacy netting for the aesthetics and branding potential they offer, Jon Ball of Ball Fabrics, Inc., says, “There is an equally growing concern around maintenance and potential wind damage. Facility managers are increasingly focused on finding solutions that balance aesthetics with durability and lower long-term upkeep. Vinyl-coated mesh products have become less popular due to their higher maintenance requirements and tendency to crack, absorb water and have shorter lifespans when exposed to the elements.”
Flexible Design Options: While chain link fencing remains the standard at many facilities, other solutions are gaining attention. As society becomes increasingly landlocked, fields are being pressed into service for multiple sports. The upshot has been the need for temporary fencing systems that can both delineate the playing space and offer safety. Padded fencing systems with posts set in sleeves on the field can allow for quick conversion between sports.
“Such systems also have other advantages,” adds Moxley, “including the ability to showcase the team, brand or sponsors of the facility.”

As the year winds down, many supervisors face the important task of conducting performance reviews. Done well, these reviews can boost morale, improve productivity, and set the stage for a successful new year. The following suggestions can help ensure your year-end reviews are valuable, constructive, and motivating for your team.
1. Prepare Thoroughly.
Gather a comprehensive overview of each employee’s performance. Review goals set at the beginning of the year, along with specific achievements, feedback, and any ongoing challenges. Ideally, this type of information would be documented throughout the year and might include feedback from clients and co-workers. Proper preparation shows respect for the employee’s work and makes the review more effective.
2. Focus on Constructive Feedback.
While highlighting accomplishments is important, it’s equally essential to address areas for growth. Be specific about the behaviors and actions you’d like to see improve, and frame this feedback constructively. Avoid generalizations like “you need to communicate better” and instead provide examples, like “keeping clients updated on project timelines.”This makes your feedback actionable and clear.
3. Set Clear, Achievable Goals.
Help employees build on their performance by setting realistic goals for the coming year. Goals should be specific, measurable and achievable to provide clarity and focus. Involving employees in goal-setting encourages ownership and gives them a stake in their own development.
4. Keep the Conversation Balanced.
A balanced review that recognizes both strengths and opportunities for growth is more motivating than one that focuses on just problem areas. Acknowledge the employee’s hard work, dedication, and successes, even if there are areas that need improvement. Research shows that employees are more receptive to feedback when they feel their contributions are valued. Maintain a positive tone, even when discussing areas for growth.
5. End with a Plan and a Positive Note.
Leave employees with a clear action plan for the upcoming year. Outline steps for professional development, resources they might need, and areas where they can excel. Conclude with an encouraging message, expressing confidence in their ability to succeed. Thank them for their hard work and reiterate your support for their growth.
By approaching year-end reviews with preparation, balanced feedback, and clear goals, supervisors can not only enhance individual performance but also contribute to a more engaged and productive team as the new year begins.
by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
As 2024 draws to a close, it’s essential for leaders to assess the organization’s performance, align strategic priorities, and set a strong foundation for the coming year.
Based on the four essential leadership tasks were outlined in the last month’s column: Defining the meaningful outside; Deciding what business you are in; Balancing present and future; and Shaping values and standards—this checklist offers actionable steps to guide leaders through a thoughtful year-end review and preparation for a great year in 2025.
1. Define the Meaningful Outside Review Market Changes: Evaluate shifts in the marketplace and identify any new trends, consumer behaviors, or competitor moves that have emerged over the year. Are your beliefs and assumptions about your market and customers still accurate?
Evaluate Customer Feedback: Analyze feedback from customer surveys, Net Promoter Scores, and any other engagement metrics. Are you meeting customer needs effectively, and have you adapted to their changing expectations?
2. Decide What Business You Are In (or Not In)
Reassess Core Focus Areas: Examine your core offerings and performance in each area. Are these areas still aligned with your company’s strengths and growth opportunities? Are there products or services that are no longer a good fit?
Explore New Opportunities: Consider emerging markets or product lines that align with your vision and strategy. What new opportunities could you pursue, and which current efforts might need to be deprioritized or phased out?
3. Balance Present and Future
Review Performance Metrics and Set Realistic Growth Goals: Assess this year’s financial performance and key metrics. Establish clear, actionable growth targets for the coming year. Make appropriate adjustments to your shortterm (quarterly), midterm (annual), and longterm (3–5 years) goals.
Budget for Innovation: Review budget allocations to ensure sufficient investment in innovation and long-term projects. Are you allocating resources to foster growth without sacrificing operational stability?
Evaluate Organizational Culture: Review the culture within your organization. Are your values resonating with employees, and are they reflective of the current business environment and your strategic direction?
Reinforce Trust and Accountability: Consider how your organization has demonstrated trustworthiness to employees and partners. Have you clearly communicated expectations and standards at every level of the organization?
As you think through this checklist, reflect on how well your organization is poised for the year ahead. Take time to celebrate wins and progress while noting areas for growth. These reflections can help you set a strong, clear path forward—one that aligns internal goals with the realities of the market and ensures your organization’s growth in 2025.

We spend a lot of time thinking about, and talking about, the challenges facing the fence industry each year. We talk about things like worker shortages, technological changes, supply chain issues, regulations at all levels, materials costs, workplace safety, contractor and supplier partnerships, and a host of other issues. While these are all very real challenges to being successful in our industry, let’s be sure we are not taking our eye off the ultimate prize.
The customer.
Just as our business environment is constantly changing (i.e., no one REALLY knows what the new political lineup in Washington D.C. will bring), so are the wants and needs of our customer base. Whether your company’s end-user market is residential, commercial, industrial, governmental, or high security, there are some common trends we should consider when planning for 2025 and beyond. Here are a few of them.
1) Customer expectations about communications.
In today’s world, it is not surprising that customers want to be informed about the progress of projects in real time, not just a projected completion date. Being “on schedule” doesn’t cut it in a world where people can keep up to date on everything from football scores to their blood pressure with the click of their phones. It isn’t that
Railing comes in a choice of 4-, 5- and 6- foot preassembled sections in either 36- or 42- inch heights that combine aluminum posts and rails with 3-5/8” stainless steel mesh infill. Accessories include a variety of residential or heavyduty commercial IRC and IBC approved posts and base plates. As an added design option, posts are available with either flat or ball caps.
Westbury Sorrento railing is available in an industry leading 12 colors with the option of textured or non-textured surfaces. For those who wish to display a stainless-steel look, clear powder coated mesh infill is an option. For even more design versatility, rails and mesh can be special ordered with contrasting colors. DSI has established itself as a company that incorporates a meticulous 10 step proprietary AAMA 2604 powder coating process in every aluminum
they want/need to know every detail of everything you are doing on the job, but the technology exists to reassure them they are getting what they are paying for. How many contractors periodically send a text to their clients, with a picture of the in-progress job, and a simple note like, “Thought you might like to see how things are going.”
2) Customer concerns about being a good community “citizen.”
We have talked before about the fact that more and more customers – from individual homeowners to corporate and even government clients – are concerned about the space around their projects. They not only want to be compliant with zoning and building regulations, but they also want to fit into their environment in other ways. They worry about things like the way the actual construction of the project will impact their community (congestion; noise; pedestrian traffic; etc.) and how the design of their project will fit into their existing neighborhood. They want to be good corporate or neighborhood citizens. Remember that the fence is part of the first visual image the public will get of their project. Be sure to understand the customers’ priorities from the very start of the project. Don’t forget to talk about the many options customers have to include fencing as a part of their solution to meeting these community concerns.
3) Customer perceptions of the fencing industry.
Image is everything. We talk about this all the time. There has never been a time when a company’s reputation has been more important to its profitability. Being a fence contractor is more than being an installer, just as being a supplier or manufacturer is more than being a product provider. Collectively, the fence industry has to project the image of being a problem-solver, and then it has to live up to that reputation. Our industry protects people and property, and it provides an important physical and aesthetic part of every project.
In February, FenceTech 2025 will give us a great opportunity to find ways for the entire industry to better understand and meet these new customer expectations. We hope everyone is planning on being there.

With the demand for fencing solutions rising in North Carolina due to the state's robust population growth and booming construction sector, 76 FENCE, a leading provider of premium residential and commercial fencing solutions, is well-positioned to meet the market’s needs due to its latest expansion in the state.
Drew Myers, local entrepreneur, will serve as regional developer and franchise owner for the two new territories in North Charlotte and Concord, while simultaneously driving the broader franchise expansion throughout the state. Myers' mission is to not only grow his own business but also to support the development of new 76FENCE locations across key regions, including Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte. This strategic expansion taps into North Carolina's surging residential and commercial development, presenting a significant market opportunity for franchisees.
"North Carolina's rapid growth has created a tremendous demand for fencing solutions, especially in high-growth areas," says David Myers. "We see a unique opportunity to scale the 76 FENCE brand across the state, bringing our high-quality services to meet the fencing needs of both residential and commercial customers. This is an exciting time for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to join a proven franchise model in a thriving market."
With a background in engineering, business leadership, and technology start-ups, Myers brings nearly two decades of experience across various industries to this new venture. As a regional developer for 76 FENCE, he will oversee the recruitment, training, and support of new franchisees across North Carolina. The goal is to develop a strong network of 76 FENCE locations throughout the state, helping entrepreneurs join a proven business model that emphasizes exceptional customer service, quality products, and a streamlined fencing installation process.
The 76 FENCE franchise model offers several competitive advantages for business owners, including comprehensive training, operational support, and digital marketing expertise. The company’s streamlined fencing installation process and commitment to superior customer service have made it a leader in the industry. Franchisees are supported with tools to ensure their success, from initial onboarding to ongoing operational assistance.
Beyond its growth potential, 76 FENCE is poised to contribute significantly to the regional economy. The expansion will create local jobs in both sales and skilled labor, while also supporting statewide small business ownership development. This local impact aligns with 76 FENCE’s values of community engagement and job creation, benefitting both franchisees and their surrounding areas.
FNDEC24-00566
“With the expansion of 76 FENCE, we are not only addressing a growing need for fencing solutions in North Carolina, but we are also creating valuable job opportunities and supporting the local economy,” says Mayers. “We’re excited to see the positive impact our franchise model will have on communities across the state and thrilled to be part of a nationwide brand dedicated to helping franchisees succeed."

The fence industry has many diverse products and more ways to install those products than most other building product industries. Residential markets allow for the fence contractor to be the expert, to sell the value of the products they prefer. Residential contractors identify consumer needs and align their business to those requirements.
Commercial projects have completely different requirements, and bidding a commercial project with the materials you prefer and installation techniques you have been trained or accustomed to may seem like a good idea and good way to save money, but it can get you in a lot of trouble both legally and financially.
Your preferred product or “your way” to install may not matter to the construction manager, architect, or project owner. How they determine the products and installation methods they use is often derived from standards. Standards are the guidelines that set a minimum criterion to get
products and services that meet their needs and expectations.
1) Standards define the characteristics of a product standards by addressing the purpose and intended usage. For example, a chain link fence system may be expected to hold up to a potential wind load in a particular geography relative to the project being a box store. The layers of need must all be met by the product as per their standards. Be aware, this can even change from site to site for the same owner! Soil conditions, wind loads, exposure, and other factors can affect the products used and how they are installed.
2) Standards define performance requirements and technical requirements including weights and measures. The above referenced chain link project will specify a certain diameter, wall thickness, and foundation for the post relative to the conditions. You may stock Schedule 40 Hot Dipped Galvanized Pipe because it is cheaper in your market, but if the standard requires a cold rolled ASTM F1043, you will have to use the specified product. Similarly, if you prefer to drive posts, and the standard requires a foundation, you’d better plan on that.
3) Standards define safety needs. This is critical. It is paramount that safety standards are met for all fence installations. When human life is at stake, don’t even question it, just do it.
4) Standards address testing requirements, which is a scientific review of the products’
performance within a set environment while considering external factors. Tested performance does not mean “it always seemed to work this way,” or heading out in the back forty of your yard and crashing an old pickup into the fence and calling it crash-rated! A certified independent lab environment is the only way to meet testing standards.
Most product standards are developed by a balanced group of industry professionals via strict rules for development and are regularly reviewed and updated. These standards ensure products are safe, compatible, consistent quality, and most importantly, hold people accountable for the manufacture and installation of the products.
The most notable and accepted standards for fence are ASTM Standards for Fence Materials and Products, which provides the latest fencing and fencing-related standards with over 50 standards for fence product manufacturing and installation requirements.
Many governments and private agencies have their own fence installation guidelines and product manuals requiring testing or certifications. These include: US Federal Specifications, Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), OSHA, USDA, HUD, and every state’s Department of Transportation.
By understanding the product standards and the installation requirements, you can grow your business and avoid costly legal or financial issues.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it. Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.
How an ambitious idea, a roast beef po’boy, and four hand-me-down nail guns came together and started a top-notch fence company.
Dan Blanc began his entrepreneurial career a bit unexpectedly in 1999 at the age of 25. At the time, he was managing a construction plumbing company. While out checking on a job in progress, a contractor just happened to be on site, and the contractor just happened to need someone to mow the property, and Blanc just happened to have his lawn mower in the back of his truck. That first mowing job led to more lawn work and before long, Blanc had a lucrative side gig. He became known as “the Grass Man” and subcontracted a high school junior to help with the workload. Later, Grass Man became Grass King after a name dispute with another local lawn company.
Blanc says that high school “kid”, as Blanc refers to him, was equally industrious and wanted something to keep the money coming in during the winter months. “So, I asked him, what can you do?” And the kid said, ‘Well, I’ve built a few fences.’”
That was the impetus for what would become Fence King. Blanc didn’t know how to build a fence. But he knew a friend who did. He asked this friend out to lunch, sat down with pen and paper to take notes, and over a roast beef po’boy, he said, “Okay, tell me how to build a fence.”
Armed with several tips, Blanc consulted his brother-inlaw who owns a fence company to learn how to price the fencing. Then a buddy gave him some old nail guns. He convinced a contractor to let him to build that first fence if the contractor purchased materials and paid him $2 a foot. Blanc paid the kid $2 a foot to help him. “That first job was a financial disaster,” Blanc says. “I didn’t make a dime on it. But I learned so much from that experience.”
Later that year, still operating his lawn business and now building fences, Grass King became Grass King Fencing and Lawn Care. By late 2003, Blanc had grown his business enough that he was able to quit his day job at the plumbing company. He sold the lawn side of the business in 2005 and says if he could go back in time, he
wouldn’t change a thing. “I learned so much because of how I started.”
Not only is Blanc successful in the fencing industry, he’s also a pioneer podcaster. In 2020, he started the podcast My Fence Life. At the time, only one other fencing-related podcast existed. Today there are 14. My Fence Life quickly became the number one fencing podcast, and earlier this year, he sold it to the Fence Workers Association. He says the grind of the podcast was both a bane and a blessing. “The podcast enabled me to make many contacts in the fence world; people I never would have met otherwise, such as manufacturers. But it took valuable time away from my business.”
Blanc started his company with one old truck and a single subcontractor. That first year, they built around 15 fences. Today, Blanc says he constructs around 500 fences a year. Fence King offers all types of fences, gates, stains and sealants, pergolas and decks and “whatever a customer might want. I run four crews every day with 11 installers, five office personnel, two project managers and six vehicles, all wrapped with Fence King promotion.”
Blanc’s attributes his success to several business priorities. His top three, in no particular order, are 1. Know your numbers. “And never take advice from anyone who hasn’t successfully built anything. If you don’t have street smarts on your team, find someone who does.” 2. Create a positive work environment and invest in your people. “We go skeet shooting, tailgate at LSU games, ride a float in parades. It’s important to give employees a reason to come to work every day.” 3. Weekly Monday morning meetings. “We collaborate, voice opinions, support each other, talk about our wins and losses and develop solutions. These meetings cost money, but the ROI is tremendous.”

With heightened awareness of gate operator safety over the past few months, I felt it important to keep our fence and gate operator professionals aware of these standards. I am sure you have heard of UL and ASTM and how they affect your installations, and it is important to recognize that these standards are part of our industry to protect and save lives.
I hear all the time, “These standards are not law, (except for a few places) so I don’t have to comply,” and you are exactly right- BUT WHY WOULDN’T YOU MEET THE STANDARDS? Are you prepared to put yourself in harm’s way or better yet, put your kids in harm’s way of a gate system that has been installed improperly!!!
The answer is- I WOULDN’T- so why are you selling, installing and servicing gate operator systems that are non-compliant?
People, especially young children, have had fatal outcomes with both automated and nonautomated systems! Every professional gate operator INSTALLER in this country should take this issue very seriously, because we are the only ones who can make a difference.
This article will try and help your operation to better understand UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Standards and how your company can help the fence and gate industry mitigate injuries and fatalities. SAFETY FIRST IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY!
UL 325
UL 325 is the safety standard for door, draper, gate, louver and window operators. It contains the basic qualifying factors with which products must comply to be documented (listed) and marked (labeled) under the requirements of the UL 325 voluntary listing and labeling program. Manufacturers of gate operators submit their products voluntarily to Underwriters Laboratories.
A key provision of UL 325 is that it requires all gate operators to be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation guidelines.
UL does not “approve” products but tests them to ensure they meet the minimum standards required of the standard. Most Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) will require gate operators to be listed to the UL 325 Standard, either by UL or another Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.
UL 325 established four classes of gate operators and includes entrapment protection criteria for different types of operators. Entrapment is defined in the standard “as the condition when an object is caught or held in a position that increases the risk of injury.”
Four classes of gate operators per UL 325:
Class I: Residential, intended for use in a garage or parking area of a one-to-four-family dwelling.
Class II: Commercial or general access vehicular gate operator for use in a commercial location or building such as a multi-family housing unit (five or more single family units), hotel garages, retail store or other building servicing the general public.
Class III: Industrial limited access vehicular gate operator, intended for use in an industrial location or building such as a factory or loading dock area, or other locations not intended to service the general public.
Class IV: Restricted access vehicular gate operator, intended for use in a guarded industrial location or building such as an airport security area or other restricted access locations not servicing the general public, in which unauthorized access is prevented via supervision by security personnel.
ASTM F2200
ASTM F2200 safety standard establishes design and construction specifications of automated vehicular gate panels and other components to complement the UL 325 standard that applies to the operator. The standard applies to horizontal slide gates, horizontal swing gates, vertical lift gates, vertical pivot gates, and overhead pivot
gates. This standard is especially focused on entrapment zones and fixed hazards associated with gates.
The ASTM F2200 standard is a guide for designers and fabricators of automated gates. As mentioned, the primary focus of the UL 325 standard is protection against entrapment relating to the gate operator, whereas ASTM F2200 addresses entrapment and other safety issues relating to the gate.
ASTM guidelines are set on gate protrusions, potential damage from rollers, protection from fall over hazards, and other potential exposures to injury or death.
If a gate is manufactured with the expectation of being automated, even if it is not automated at the time of installation, the gate is required to conform to the ASTM F2200 standard.
Four classes of automated gates per ASTM F200: Class I: A gate for the garage or parking area of a one-to-four single family dwelling.
Class II: A gate for use in a commercial location, such as a multi-family housing unit (five or more single family units), hotel, garages, retail store, or building servicing the general public.
Class III: A gate intended for use in an industrial location or building such as a factory, loading dock area, or other locations not intended to service the general public.
Class IV: A gate intended for use in a guarded industrial location or building such as an airport security area, or other restricted access locations not servicing the general public, in which unauthorized access is prevented by means of supervision by security personnel.
If we look closely at the classifications of both, the standards are complimenting each other, and this provides a safer installation. Understanding and combining these two standards into your installations will minimize your exposure and liability and again, the focus is to protect and save lives.
Although UL 325 does contain some design criteria related to automated gates, the primary standard that governs the gate panels is ASTM

FEBRUARY | Ron Chouinard, president | L&C Enterprises – USA and Delta Fence
“There has to be an easier way” has been the career motivation of Ron Chouinard, president of L&C Enterprises – USA and Delta Fence. It has led to innovation, better business practices, enhanced customer service and a legacy as a premier provider within the fence industry.
He created the 1980’s Installink Fence Dispenser, a machine to stretch, carry and roll fence fabric out with a skid steer. He also created the Easy Twist and Twist Tite pre-formed fence ties that better fortify and secure tight to fence fabric. Chouinard continuously innovates to improve productivity and profit.
Quality is the one principle he focuses on the most. “If you use quality materials, have a quality staff and are working with quality people, there is a good chance the job is going to be successful,” Choinard says. “In my opinion, a lot of businesses try to make their profit by skimping on quality; the customer ends up on the bad end of the deal. I like to find a way to do it faster and save money elsewhere, not on the quality of the product.”

A layoff became the turning point for Zach Romero’s career. After his job ended in the aerospace industry, Romero’s career with Blackline HHP began. As vice president of sales and marketing, Romero uses his strength of attention to detail to strategically position the company.
“A successful sales career means being able to listen to your customer first, and then understanding that, at times, you might not be the best fit for them,” he explains. “You must have a network in place so that you can direct customers to where they should go if it’s not you.”
Blackline HHP specializes in black vinyl fences. The HHP stands for high heat performance. “Our customers are looking for a particular outcome and maintaining our focus on details allows us to maintain our high standard of quality,” Romero says. MAY | Clint Iams | CEO of Log Cabin Fence, executive director of North American Fence Contractors Association
Growing up in his parent’s fence company, Log Cabin Fence, provided Clint Iams a solid foundation of hard work, business, and giving back. Today, he is CEO of the family business, part-time professor at Robert Morris University’s Rockwell School of Business, and executive director of North American Fence Contractors Association (NAFCA).
A piece of advice that has motivated Iams is to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. “My current largest fence customer is the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. This is a result of solving their problem of deer causing destruction to their plants, but in aesthetically pleasing ways,” Iams explains. “Being willing to build fence in ‘uncomfortable’ ways, different from our normal operations, opened a door to them becoming our largest fence customer.”
Advice from his parents has proven to be effective. “Let your yes be yes and no be no. Be honest and straightforward in all dealings,” he says. “Make your community a better place and everyone around you will thrive. That’s why we formed Log Cabin Cares, an initiative to enhance our community.”

Linda Sheehan was named CEO of Trident Enterprises on March 2, 2021, the same day as her dad’s 82nd birthday. Growing up with the company her parents founded in 1984, she is excited about directing it into new growth, focusing on her people-first commitment, which is evident among employees and customers alike.
“Navigating the leadership transition was challenging as I didn’t fit the traditional mold of business owners in our industry,” Sheehan explains. “I spent the first two years restructuring the company foundation in a way that was most important to me: people first. My team now trusts me to guide the business toward continued growth.”

AUGUST | Scott Barsotti | CEO of Bergandi
An entrepreneur at heart, Scott Barsotti acquired Bergandi in 2001 and has since doubled annual sales. Bergandi, a global leader in the wire and metal process industries, holds an exceptional reputation for quality since its founding in 1928.
“When I took over Bergandi, we were largely a domestic business. We now have machinery in 66 countries. At one point, 70% - 80% of our sales were international,” Barsotti explains. “We are four years away from our 100th anniversary and look forward to growing and innovating with the industry and its changing needs.”
Promoting a positive work culture is important to Barsotti. “We have employees who have been with us for almost 40 years as well as a crew of younger employees currently being trained by these veterans,” he says. “I try to make sure everyone understands their role and how important individual effort is to the overall success of Bergandi.”

SEPTEMBER | Damian Lang | CEO of EZG Manufacturing
Success in the masonry industry led to success in the fencing industry, thanks to innovative and quality manufacturing. Damian Lang, founder and CEO of EZG Manufacturing is the creator of Fence Hog® and other equipment used in several industries. As an innovator, he is continuously looking for the next creation to improve productivity.
“Fence Hog propelled us into the fencing industry in the early 2000’s,” Lang explains. “Before that, I developed equipment for the masonry industry and achieved a good deal of success. In my development of equipment, I committed to only producing quality equipment that would last.”
He is the author of Rewarding and Challenging Employees, a book that came about based on his passion to improve employee productivity. “It was during my time in the masonry industry. After an article was published in Masonry Magazine, contractors were calling me for more information. I used the content of what I was teaching to write the book,” he says.
“We will continue to innovate new products and strive to improve systems and processes,” Lang says. “We’re currently working in masonry, fencing, hardscape, precast/refractory and contractor manufacturing markets. To us, every day is like the first day I started the company. I am continuously motivated to accomplish more. That keeps me wanting to wake up every morning to do bigger and better things.

OCTOBER | Jac Whitmire | National Sales Manager with DoorKing
Having been in sales since 2000, Jac Whitmire is a leader in the industry. Knowing that a “quick sale” doesn’t usually turn into a lifelong customer, Whitmire is focused on solving problems.
“I enjoy partnering with good, hard-working people to create a positive outcome that makes everybody some money and satisfies the client,” he says. “I see my job as a marathon, not a sprint. No one wins when they sell the wrong product to the customer.”
“I created a program called Heavy Hitters for the regional sales mangers who meet certain performance criteria,” Whitmire explains. “This may sound illogical, but sales is not one of the criteria for the program. Many times, product is bought through sales channels that are not in a regional sales manager’s sales district, so they may work very hard to develop a new customer, or help design a large system, but they don’t get credit for it.”
Each year at DoorKing’s year-end sales meeting, Whitmire presents a customized baseball bat to a Heavy Hitter. “The regional sales managers are always incredibly proud to receive their award. I strive to create the type of environment that recognizes people’s accomplishments and the hard work they put in.”

NOVEMBER | Ed Grause | Vice President of Sales and Operations with Antebellum Manufacturing
Working at many levels of the fence industry has given Ed Grause a strong foundation. As vice president of sales and operations with Antebellum Manufacturing, he enjoys the camaraderie within the industry.
“My career has given me tremendous opportunity to work at many levels of the fence industry,” Grause says. “For anyone looking to get into the fence industry, I recommend experience in the three aspects of our business – manufacturing, distribution and contracting – to see which is the best fit for them. I’m glad I went that route and found my passion.”
“All of us in manufacturing must overcome problems every day,” he says. “I’ve learned that no one should try to do this on an island. Any problem solving begins with collaboration. Bring in your team, your customers, your vendors and anyone else who can help. If you think that you can solve a problem on your own, then you are probably the problem.”
“Goals should be ambitious but also varied. Setting a goal for good customer service or timely shipping can be as important as a goal for increased sales and profit. In fact, I believe that setting a ‘non-sales’ goal can be the best way to increase sales.”

F2200. This standard was developed to ensure consistency in safety between the gate operator and the gate panel(s).
UL 325 states that pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening.
Automatic gate operators are for vehicular use only and should never be used to control pedestrian traffic.
ASTM F2200 states that any pedestrian access in the vicinity of an automated vehicular gate requires a separate pedestrian gate. The pedestrian gate shall be installed in a location such that a pedestrian shall not encounter a moving vehicular access gate.
It is important to understand that the International Code Council (ICC) has adopted the requirements of both UL 325 and ASTM F2200 standards for automated gates into the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), the International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC). I challenge your company to help educate the local codes of authority and help expand the knowledge to our communities, when the opportunity presents itself.
A warning placard must be clearly visible from both sides of the gate, including when the gate is in the fully opened position. Manufacturers are required to provide two warning placards with each vehicular gate operator.
Automated gates must be designed and installed to prevent a fall of more than 45 degrees from the vertical plan when detached from the supporting hardware.
All openings must be guarded or screened from the bottom of the gate to the top of the gate, up to 72 inches above grade, to prevent a 2 ¼ sphere from penetrating the openings anywhere in the gate. This also extends to the adjacent fence that the cover covers when in the open position.
Positive stops are required to limit the travel of the gate to the fully open and fully closed positions.
All weight-bearing rollers 8 feet or less from grade must be covered or guarded
Items less than 9-square inches and attached to the gate such that they extend beyond the horizontal or vertical planes, are considered protrusions and are not permitted on automated gates.
However, the following are acceptable protrusions:
• Gate locks and edge sensors
• Objects that extend less than one-half inch and which have smooth surfaces
• Wheels on slide gates (must be covered)
• Top pickets and top decorative designs, provided they are in the vertical plane of the gate
• Protrusions extending beyond the vertical plane of the gate are permitted provided the protrusions are at least seven feet above grade.
• Automated gates must have smooth bottom edges with no protrusions more than one-half inch.
Entrapment is the condition of being caught or held in a position (pinned or trapped) that increases the risk of injury and this is any area that has any one dimension that is greater than 4 inches or less than 16 inches where a person can be trapped between an automated gate and a fixed stationary object is considered an entrapment area.
Our goal as professional gate and operator installers is to eliminate the entrapment areas but when entrapment areas cannot be eliminated, they MUST be protected with a monitored entrapment protection device.
Controls used to operate the gate must be located a minimum of six feet away from any moving part of the gate, to prevent reachthrough hazards, which can result in injury or death. The exception to this rule is Emergency Access Controls for use by first responders.

A topic that comes often is how to deal with unlevel gates and should we automate. The hard answer is NO and the following is the guideline that we must adhere to for a safe gate and operator installation:
Gates must be designed, fabricated and installed so that their movement will not be initiated by gravity if disconnected from the operator. Gates on uneven surfaces must have a counterbalance system that will prevent a “runaway gate” hazard.
These are the main components outlined in the UL and ASTM standards for our industry and we should strive to adhere and provide safe installations in every job we do. For additional content knowledge, please visit www. fenceconsultinggroup.com for resources and books that will elevate and educate.

Tie manufacturing, R&D and testing. As part of the all-expenses-paid visit to Simpson Strong-Tie facilities, the students toured the company’s labs and manufacturing floors. They also heard from Simpson Strong-Tie employees about their career paths and tried out the company’s products with hands-on demonstrations.
For many students, it was their first opportunity to learn more about a well-paying, stable career in the construction trades. The Trades Day events provided Simpson Strong-Tie an opportunity to make good on its key social impact priority “to contribute to the quality of construction trades education and the promotion and advancement of the trades.”
