Meet Moasure: The Pocket-Sized Tool Transforming Fencing Professionals’ Measurements

The fencing industry is experiencing a game-changing advancement with the launch of the Moasure 2 Series. Building on the global success of the first-generation Moasure ONE, this next-generation lineup—featuring Moasure 2 and Moasure 2 PRO—is set to revolutionize measurement workflows for fencing professionals.

Moasure’s cutting-edge technology uses inertial sensors to allow users to simply measure as they walk a jobsite. By pairing with the free, Bluetoothconnected Moasure app, measurements are displayed live in 3D, capturing perimeter, area, elevation, and even volume, no matter how challenging the site – and without the need for line of sight, GPS, Wi-Fi or cell phone signal.

Moasure can also measure into inaccessible corners, a key area in the fencing industry.

This highly anticipated feature offers an entirely new approach to setting out fence lines and structures. The app provides step-by-step guidance to each coordinate, ensuring precise placement and efficiency on-site.

LOCK JOINT TUBE’S TEXAS MILL TAKES PRIDE IN MEETING REGIONAL DEMAND

Lock Joint Tube, a trusted provider of high-quality steel tubing solutions for the fencing industry, operates a mill in Temple, Texas, that stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to manufacturing excellence and customer satisfaction. This site features four tube mills, and according to Mark Daril, LJT's galvanized product manager, this central Texas location offers a range of benefits for customers across the Southwest and beyond.

Shorter Lead Times for Regional Customers

One of the standout advantages of sourcing from the Texas facility is the significant reduction in lead times for customers in the Texas region. Proximity matters when it comes to meeting tight project deadlines, and Daril says the company’s local presence ensures faster delivery, keeping projects on schedule and minimizing downtime, whether the customer is managing a large-scale fencing project or needs tubing for smaller installations.

Excellent Inventory for Fence Posts

The Texas mill maintains an exceptional inventory of 2.375" fence posts, ideal for wood fencing applications. These posts, a

staple in the fencing industry, offer superior strength and longevity. Additionally, the LJT 40 products, known for their enhanced durability and corrosion resistance, are available from the mill, providing added value for demanding environments.

If you can envision it, we can help make it a reality.”

Made in the USA with a Global Advantage

When you choose fence tubing from Lock Joint Tube, you’re doing more than purchasing a product—you’re supporting local manufacturing and contributing to the

strength of the American economy. “Every tube we produce is proudly made in the USA, adhering to strict quality standards that ensure unmatched durability and reliability,” says Daril. “By choosing Lock Joint Tube, you’re investing in American craftsmanship and helping sustain domestic jobs across the country.”

The company’s production facilities in Temple, Texas; South Bend, Indiana; Orwell, Ohio; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, are at the heart of this commitment. “These facilities represent the core of our innovation and excellence, ensuring that every product meets the high standards our customers rely on,” adds Daril.

In addition to its U.S.-based operations, Lock Joint Tube also operates a facility in Monterrey, Mexico. “This strategically located facility allows us to enhance our manufacturing flexibility and improve logistics, ensuring we can meet the demands of customers across North America,” explains Daril. “By combining our American-made products with the logistical advantages of Monterrey, we are better positioned to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions without compromising on our commitment to U.S. manufacturing excellence.”

A PICKLE OF A PROJECT: EIGHT-COURT PICKLEBALL COMPLEX

In today’s commercial chain link fencing industry, a well-trained, well-equipped fence crew has several advantages. With any size crew, a 10-foot-high, 600-foot perimeter fence poses many logistical hurdles. Proper planning, organization, and professional fencing equipment can help overcome many of these hurdles. The Delta Fence and Construction Team recently completed a chain link fence installation at an eight-court pickleball complex in Gladstone, Michigan. Working as a coordinated team, using the correct fence tools, and leveraging professional fencing hardware for the heavy lifting saved the Delta Fence crews valuable time, money, and effort on this project. These factors elevated the Delta Fence Team to complete the job on time and under budget, while exceeding their client’s expectation. Delta Fence Owner Ron Chouinard provides insight into each of these factors:

Efficient Use of Fencing Tools

Time on site is important when working on any sized chain link fence job. With the posts placed and set, the 10-foot-tall, 50-foot-long fabric rolls were laid out in advance so the crew didn’t have to get off the line to load back up. They used L&C Enterprises-USA’s Installink (chain link fence dispenser) to stretch the fence. “When we run out of fabric, we turn the cage down, load another fabric roll, and keep going,” says Chouinard. This coordination keeps the heavy equipment operation, and fence crew working forward around the outside of the facility.

“Using hangers on top to hold the fabric up, we stretch the fence with the Installink, allowing us to adjust and control the tension,” he explains. “We then tie the whole fence as we go. As long as we have the hangers holding the fabric in place, we start with a tying crew, on the inside, behind the stretching crew.”

Hardware Operation

With a scissor lift and hand drills, the crew worked quickly up and down the fence line. By using proper equipment, the tie crew made quick work securing the fabric to the posts. Even with Easy Twist ties spaced out every 18 inches, the crew was able to keep pace with the fabric stretching team. Working in tandem, one tying high and one low, the crew anchored the fabric to the posts. With the breakdown of tasks and the use of Easy Twist Ties, the tie crew made quick work of the eight-court pickleball facility.

Crew Coordination

During installation, Delta Fence utilized a crew of four to stretch the chain link fabric, followed by a crew of two to tie the fabric. With coordination, both fence crews completed stretching and tying the entire 600 feet of 10-foot-tall fabric, minus the gates, in a full day. Working as a coordinated team, using the correct fence tools, and leveraging professional fencing hardware for the heavy lifting saved the Delta Fence crews valuable time, money, and effort during the Gladstone pickleball facility fence installation. These factors elevated the Delta Fence Team to complete the job on time and under budget.

“Completing this project for our local

pickleballers and the community alike has been a three-year dream come true,” says Gladstone Area Pickleball board member Rich Beauvais. “The fence installers came in, got their job done quickly, and got out of the way so others involved could do their part.”

By speeding up many of the mundane processes while eliminating technical hurdles, like loading fence fabric, the crews are highly active on-site while focused on completing the tasks at hand. These factors allow Delta Fence to tackle decent-sized jobs quickly and remain competitive in today’s fast-paced fencing industry.

MASTER HALCO: A LEGACY WOVEN IN STEEL

When you think of chain-link fences, you might picture playgrounds, sports fields, or secure perimeters around industrial sites. However, what often goes unnoticed is the intricate world of innovation and manufacturing behind these everyday structures. At the heart of this industry stands Master Halco, North America’s leading manufacturer and distributor of fencing products. Founded in 1951, Master Halco has played a pivotal role in shaping not just fences but also the industry’s standards. From the gleaming galvanized steel of a suburban backyard fence to high-security installations guarding critical infrastructure, Master Halco’s products have become synonymous with reliability and durability.

The Art Behind the Links

Chain link fencing might seem simple—steel wires woven into a diamond pattern—but the manufacturing process is a marvel of precision and engineering. For GBW chain link, steel is coated for corrosion resistance, then woven into a flexible mesh that balances strength with adaptability, while GAW chain link is coated after weaving. Master Halco has refined this process over decades, ensuring every roll of chain link meets rigorous quality standards. Their innovation goes beyond manufacturing. With sustainability becoming a growing concern, Master Halco has invested in eco-friendly coatings and recycling programs to reduce environmental impact while maintaining product longevity. “Our GAW chain link uses a trivalent chromium which is much more eco-friendly than its predecessor, hexavalent chromium, while providing the high quality we are known for,” says Randy Ryker, senior director of manufacturing.

Building More Than Fences

But Master Halco doesn’t just build fences— they build trust and partnerships. With an extensive network of branches across North America, the company ensures contractors, architects, and homeowners have access to the right materials exactly when they need them. Their products aren’t limited to chain link fencing, either. From wood and ornamental fences to vinyl and composite materials, Master Halco has diversified to meet changing market demands.

Securing the Future

As urban spaces grow and security concerns evolve, the need for reliable fencing solutions continues to rise. Master Halco remains at the forefront, not just as a manufacturer, but as an innovator shaping the future of perimeter security.

So, the next time you walk past a sturdy chain-link fence, know that behind its simplicity lies a legacy of craftsmanship, engineering excellence, and a company that has quietly become an unsung hero of modern infrastructure—Master Halco.

WINNER OF THE 2024-2025 LES GRUBE MEMORIAL DESIGN AWARD ANNOUNCED

If good fences make good neighbors, great fences bring them together. That’s exactly what the Love Bank Park project in St. Louis, Missouri, exemplifies. The project, designed by Patterhn Ives in collaboration with Arbolope Studio, with chain link canopy installation by Empire Fence & Custom Iron Works, is the recipient of the annual Les Grube Memorial Design Award from the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI)

The project was the result of a community led investment that elevated a former site of two vacant, paved lots with just a single basketball hoop at a prominent city intersection into a beautifully versatile and environmentally sustainable public space.

The centerpiece of the reimagined space is a chain link canopy that is as beautiful as it is innovative.

“We are very honored to be recognized by CLFMI with this prestigious design award,” says Anna Ives, managing partner of Patterhn Ives. “We appreciate the recognition of our design and the unique use of chain link in collaboration with Empire Fence. It was a great creative collaboration that surpassed our expectations.”

Ives says this the project appealed to their firm on multiple levels. “The reimagining of Love Bank Park for the Cherokee Street Neighborhood was a true, community grassroots effort. At the heart of the challenge was how to transform a square, paved corner into a multi-functional space. As a design firm, we thrive on projects that challenge us to be innovative while still delivering projects that are functional. This project pushed all of our creative buttons.”

“Chain link came into the conversation pretty early on in the design process,” says Ives. “We are always looking for ways to use everyday materials in non-traditional ways. An existing chain link fence on the property provided the context and we decided to pull that into our concept of creating a shaded canopy that would both separate and connect the overlapping areas for different community uses we were creating.”

Comprised of a series of galvanized steel trusses and clad in a chain link fabric skin, the canopy at the center of the park picks up on the language of the urban basketball court and personifies the park’s grassroots character in its unique use of simple materials. It both separates the basketball court and community spaces, while also connecting them. The multi-layered effect of the chain link cladding creates a delicate overhead condition which is pierced by a single tree at its center, framing the performance area below. During the day, the canopy and tree cover provide a shaded respite. In the evenings, the character of the canopy evolves into a backdrop for performances and events through a careful lighting strategy which highlights its structural features.

“This was an extremely rewarding project for us,” says Stephen Wilson with Empire Fence. “It was also one of the most interesting and challenging projects we’ve worked on, but we were on board with the creative plan from the beginning. From working with the fabricator of the steel truss

system to configure the custom chain link panels, to making sure the chain link fabric was tightly stretched within each window of the panels and working with the electrician to test the effect of the lights on the chain link, it was a unique project from start to finish.”

He says installation in what was a tight angle and space, up in the air versus between fence posts on the ground posed one of the biggest project challenges. “We had to do most of the work with aerial lifts planning and mapping out the order of the panel installation pieces. It was certainly not a typical install, but we were so proud to be a part of making this beautiful park located just five minutes from our office a reality for our community. Winning the Les Grube Award adds even more to our excitement and pride. It’s a huge honor.”

The Love Bank Park project was completed in April 2024 and has already become a vital community space that is at once a shaded reprieve from the St. Louis summer heat, a flexible venue for planned and impromptu events, a place for the young people of the neighborhood to gather and play basketball, a permeable stormwater retention system, and a habitat for pollinators. The shaded canopy that connects it all is a creative showcase to the versatility of chain link.

With this award each year, CLFMI recognizes the designing architect and installing contractor of the project that is deemed to represent the most unique and practical way of incorporating chain link fencing materials. The award was established in 1984 during Les Grube’s term as CLFMI president. He was instrumental in outlining the award’s qualifications and establishing connections with the architectural community to support the concept. Ted says one of the standout features of square tubing is its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Its uniform shape allows for easy cutting, welding, and assembly, making it a versatile option for a wide range of applications. In fencing, square tubing is prized for its ability to provide a clean, modern aesthetic while offering robust structural support. Ken Jordan

REGIONAL SALES MANAGER, WHEATLAND TUBE with

After earning a degree in business administration, Ken Jordan dove right into a sales career in the fence industry. Now, with 20 years of experience in this field, Jordan serves as the regional sales manager for Wheatland Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, and one of the top fence pipe and tube manufacturers in the country.

Renowned for its commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability, Wheatland Tube produces a comprehensive range of products, serving diverse industries across North America, and Jordan leads the charge to communicate all the company offers to their customers. Fence News had the chance to visit with Jordan about his role with Wheatland and his insight into the industry.

WHAT CAME FIRST – SALES OR THE FENCE INDUSTRY?

It was a combination. My first position was at Allied Tube & Conduit, where I was hired to work with the inside sales team, learning the customers and the industry. After just six months, I was promoted to outside sales and given territory to manage. In 2015, 10 years after I started, Allied decided to vacate the fence sector. Fortunately, I then had the opportunity to join the Wheatland team as regional sales manager in 2016.

WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT WHEATLAND?

Their focus on product innovation and their reputation for customer services. When you work in sales, you learn first-hand that not only is the quality of what you sell important, but also the focus on understanding and meeting the needs of individual customers. The overall culture behind the company’s strong brand reputation and customer loyalty was very appealing. With a legacy spanning over a century, Wheatland combines advanced manufacturing processes with customer-focused solutions to meet the constantly changing demands of the industries we serve. There’s not one factor that makes this possible; it’s a multi-faceted approach, that includes unique product features and functionalities, high quality manufacturing processes, efficient supply chain management and well-established distribution channels.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?

No two days are alike, but I have multiple overreaching responsibilities that guide the work I do with my team. I track and create accurate sales forecasts by customer and product. I evaluate territory performance against established objectives/guidelines, such as sales forecast, budget, number of new accounts, gross margins, and more. Based on those results, we take appropriate action to improve performance. I’m also responsible for providing technical support to federal, state, and local governments, as well as architects and engineers, so it’s critical I stay up to date on our product specifications. I communicate directly with fence distributors and contractors regularly, both to generate demand for existing and new products, and get their feedback. One of the parts of my job I really enjoy developing and implementing innovative programs, sales initiatives, and strategies to target key demographics, and tracking those results

WHAT IS MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Working in an industry that is challenging, demanding, and rewarding every day. I have the privilege to be employed by a company whose owner has high expectations, not only of their employees, but of themselves. I collaborate with a terrific staff who pull together to exceed those expectations daily. One thing that surprised me about this industry when I first started was how

no one ever gets OUT when they are IN, but now I understand why. The people I work with and the relationships I have cultivated here and across our industry are incredible, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

WHAT IS A BUSINESS CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT? I guess one of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career was when Zekelman Industries closed the Western Tube Mill in Long Beach, California. The closure put a heavy strain on the Wheatland Mill in Chicago, which caused lead time delays that naturally impacted our customers. To overcome these issues, the team communicated to our customers and worked with the Wheatland Operations Team to ensure the customer’s needs were met.

DID YOU HAVE A BUSINESS MENTOR WHO HELPED INSPIRE YOUR CAREER PATH?

Coming up in the fence industry I was fortunate to be surrounded by a team of gentlemen who were truly what we call “Fence Guys”: Steve Disborough, Tim Ogg, Scott Young, Steve Bailow, Mike Larson, Ed Cuttino and John Eichenlaub. These men really taught me the meaning of professionalism and relationship building – qualities that have become the foundation of my career.

WHAT CAREER GOALS HAVE YOU ACHIEVED THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF AND WHAT GOALS ARE YOU STILL STRIVING TOWARD?

When I first started at Allied Tube, I envisioned a long-lasting career in the fence industry, and now after 20 years, I believe I have achieved that goal. This industry has accepted me as one of their own. Although I have been successful in my current role, it’s important to always have goals, and my long-term goal is to obtain a key leadership position as a vice president and/or president within this industry.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? Wake up every day with the mindset to accomplish your personal goals as well as professional goals. That’s the advice I’d give to anyone starting out, along with learning from the people who have come before you. Work hard on cultivating relationships with everyone in your industry.

Trex Decking and Railing Earn Rave Reviews from Building and Design Experts

They say the third time is a charm—but what about the seventeenth? That’s the number of times Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of highperformance, low-maintenance composite decking and railing, has topped the rankings in BUILDER magazine’s annual Brand Use Study. In addition to receiving the highest scores for brand awareness among the 23 brands included in the study, Trex® emerged as the #1 brand used most by Pro Builders and Pro Remodel Contractors in both the Composite/PVC Decking and Deck Railings categories of this year’s study. But that’s not all.

New for 2024, Zonda Media, which publishes BUILDER, along with other leading trade publications including Architect and Journal of Light Construction (JLC), also queried architects and remodelers as part of its survey, which measures the attitudes of industry professionals towards the products they recognize, use and trust. Across all three titles, readers ranked Trex as their preferred brand for composite decking and railing.

“We look forward to the results of this study each year and are extremely pleased to know that our decking and railing innovations continue to be valued by trade professionals and specifiers,” says Leslie Adkins, group vice

We are honored to consistently earn this recognition year after year and are committed to extending our legacy by continuing to deliver on our brand promise of performance, innovation and aesthetics.”

Among the factors influencing brand selection in the study were product performance, warranty, availability, ease of installation, price, reputation, manufacturer/dealer relationships and sustainability. Trex earned a Brand Power Rating of 1904 among professional builders and 1552 among remodel contractors. The next closest competitor earned scores of 684 and 830 respectively followed by scores below 88 for all other brands.

As noted in the Zonda Brand Usage Study report, “Driven by high, equivalent strength amongst Pro Builders and Pro Remodel Contractors, Trex has the top Brand Power Score and then category competition drops rapidly. Trex brand stickiness is much higher than any other brand with differentiation buoyed by its superior brand commitment.”

In 2024, Trex has also topped “Best of” lists published by three prominent home and lifestyle media outlets:

• Trex captured the top spot in Bob Vila’s ranking of “The 5 Best Composite Decking Brands of 2024”

• Trex Transcend® decking was named “Best Overall” by Good Housekeeping on its list of “The 5 Best Composite Decking Brands of 2024”

• Trex Signature® and Trex Select® decking both earned spots on Veranda’s list of “The 10 Best Composite Decking Options for Every Homeowner”

“This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the opinions of trade professionals and industry insiders who not only use our products but who influence the decisions of others,” notes Adkins. “We value the trust and confidence these experts have in our products, and we are extremely proud to be their preferred brand.”

The Value of Perimeter Protection as Theft Prevention

With vehicle theft on the rise, car manufacturers and dealers are under increasing pressure to protect their high-value assets. One Detroit-based car design and manufacturing company took action, partnering with Concentric Security, a leader in integrated perimeter security solutions, to secure their storage lots for new vehicles.

Unlike traditional perimeter protection, which focuses on keeping bad actors out, the auto industry faces a unique challenge: preventing highvalue merchandise from leaving the premises without authorization. Auto auctions, new vehicle storage lots, car dealerships, and rental car lots all require durable, high-volume security solutions. These solutions must not only handle frequent vehicle movement but also provide a robust defense against theft attempts.

After assessing the company’s needs, Concentric Security recommended the HySecurity StrongArm® M30 hostile vehicle mitigation barrier by Nice. Known for its durability and performance, the barrier offered a blend of strength and efficiency. According to Chris Truss, construction sales manager at Concentric Security, “When dealing with high-value assets like luxury vehicles, the right perimeter solution isn’t about the upfront cost—it’s about the risk of it failing when it matters most.”

The system proved its value in August 2024, when a theft attempt at a Ground Effects Automotive lot in Warren, Michigan was thwarted. Six suspects attempted to steal $500,000 worth of Dodge Durangos by ramming two vehicles into the barrier to create an escape route. The barrier held firm, preventing their escape and securing the lot.

“They came in, they clearly had a plan. They knew what they were going for," says Warren Police Sgt. Jim Twardesky. "They brought gasoline along because the cars kept on the lot don't have a lot of gas in them, so they came prepared in the event that they had to drive for a while. So they brought extra gas. Definitely an organized plan. The first car attempts to ram his way through the gate; he's unsuccessful. A second car tries to ram his way through the gate –pretty impressive construction– they weren't able to get through.”

Warren Police, in an interview with Fox 2, remarked, “Whatever gate they’re using at [Ground Effects Automotive] would be a good one to consider using.”

Concentric Security has since installed over 40 StrongArm M30 barriers at various locations for this manufacturer, providing streamlined installation, intuitive access control, and minimal maintenance. More importantly, the solution has

consistently delivered a 100% success rate, offering peace of mind and unmatched protection for high-value assets.

"Lunawood is known as a growth-driven company exporting already to over 60 countries. Having found a partner that shares our ambitions and is committed to serving the North American market comprehensively, we recognized a joint venture as the ideal solution to leverage both of our core competencies and enable our growth", says Arto Halonen, CEO of Oy Lunawood. "We are also happy to be able to serve the Northern American market with shorter delivery times for Lunawood Collection products, thanks to local inventory," he continues.

Hal Mitchell, president of Atlanta Hardwood Corporation, and brand manager for AHC Hardwood Group, adds, “We have partnered with the best producer of the most environmentally friendly building product on the planet. This joint venture will allow Lunawood to become the world's leader in thermal modification in both North American and Nordic species. We are excited to offer volume production of these quality-tested, sustainable and durable products to the North American market. Scaling the manufacturing of U.S. lumber has been a dream since our first thermal modification kiln was installed 10 years ago. This joint venture allows us to accomplish that goal."

The growing demand for thermally modified timber in the United States is driven by the increasing demand for sustainable building materials for both indoor and outdoor applications and a strong trend toward green building construction. Demand is especially strong in design applications, including interior architectural accents, exterior cladding, and decking, as architects and builders seek durable, sustainable alternatives to chemically treated wood or exotic hardwoods.

Gatekeeping for the Governor: Wyoming Governor’s Mansion Fence and Automated Gate Project by Picasso Gate

It’s not uncommon for Brent Nichols, founder of Picasso Gate, Inc., to get a call to come take a look at a gate that’s not working right. But this time, his assessment took on added significance because the gates were on the fence around the Wyoming Governor’s Mansion in Cheyenne. What started out as a gate replacement recommendation evolved into a much larger project. “One thing led to another as we looked at the gates and we were asked if we would also consider replacing the fence as well as the gates,” says Nichols. “It was a big undertaking, but one we had the experience and skill to handle. We’ve worked on many projects for large properties and celebrities across the country, but creating this fence and gate installation for the governor of our own state was an honor.”

The fence, supporting posts for the fence and gates were all engineered, designed and fabricated by Picasso Gate. The company also provided structural stamped drawings for the gate support post footings, the fence apron and the fence line posts.

Nichols provides an overview of each aspect of the project.

Fence Overview

Specifications:

• A total of 350,000 pounds of steel was used on this project.

• 3600 total feet of 8’-high fence with hot forged picket tops.

• Constructed of 2” x 1” x 3/16” channel.

• Channels: punched with the pickets running through the channels and welded on the underneath side of each channel.

• Pickets: 3/4" solid bar.

• Posts: 3” square tubing with a 3/16” wall and every 100’ a 4” square tubing post with a 3/16” wall was used to break up the monotony of a long line of fence and provide more stability.

• Camera posts and light posts were integrated into construction to meet the security needs of the property. Camera/light posts: 6” square tubing with a ¼” wall with access plates for wiring and pre-drilled holes for mounting the cameras and lights.

• Corners: fence arched up from 8’ to 12’.

• Each fence section was individually measured and fabricated to fit between the posts and built on the degree of grade and contour of the ground elevation.

• Each 6’-long section weighed around 500 pounds.

• A 12”-wide concrete apron was installed under the fence to allow for maintenance of the grass and landscaping and to prevent digging under the fence.

The fence was electro-static painted with first a primer then a black paint with an acrylic modifier to harden and help prevent fading. This was completed in Picasso Gate’s paint room. After the installation and welding the welded areas were buffed and touched up then the posts and fence received a final finish painting on site.

gate Overview

• 4 sets of new bi-parting entry/exit automated gates and automated bollards were installed.

• Gates were located at the north and south entries.

• Gates start at the 8’ height at the support posts and go up to 10’ in the center.

aesthetic additions

• The Steamboat Cowboy from the Wyoming license plates and the buffalo image from the Wyoming state flag were cut then heated and hammered from the back side to provide depth, detail and texture to these iconic silhouettes.

• The Steamboat Cowboy was placed between the entry and exit gate on the stone column on the north gates.

• The buffalo, a two-piece image that consisted of the body of the buffalo and its cape, was placed on the center column between the entry and exit gates at the south entry.

• Both images are backlit at night.

project challenges

Nichols says there were about seven months of design, planning and approvals before they began in January of 2024. It was completed in August 2024. As with any large-scale custom project like this one, Nichols says there were challenges during installation. “The east fence line separates the Governor’s Mansion and the Cheyenne golf course, and navigating around the 100-year-old trees and landscaping required access from both sides of the property line. The east side fence was started first because it had the most difficult access. We made the decision to begin there at the end of January while the ground was frozen to prevent as much damage to the ground as possible. And because we were working in the winter, there were times our crew had to chain up their truck tires after snowstorms to get in and out of the area. Even so, there were still a few areas it was impossible to get our crane trucks into, so the crew had to hand carry and install 500-pound sections of fence using manpower only.”

At the completion of the project the Governor had a reception at the mansion for all that were involved.

Nichols and his son Alex, who co-owns and manages Picasso Gate with him, are both traditional blacksmiths and ironworkers. “We don’t believe in cutting pre-made sections of fence in the field to fit between posts. Our fence sections are custom built to fit each individual opening, he says. “While most fences and gates in the United States are premanufactured, there are still a few companies like Picasso Gate building the highest quality custom fencing and gates available for customers who require something unique and hand-crafted. We’ve built our reputation by following the strictest criteria for craftsmanship, aesthetics, mechanics and security.”

Leading with the Customer in Mind: Building a Culture of Customer Experience Excellence

The most successful companies in our industry don’t just measure customer experience (CX)— they lead with it, they operationalize it, they build a culture around listening. Leadership is the critical link between customer feedback and meaningful action. By championing a customer-focused culture, leaders drive satisfaction, loyalty, and sustainable growth.

It does not matter whether you’re a contractor, distributor, or a manufacturer. Leadership in CX begins with a clear vision. Great leaders articulate what exceptional customer experience looks like and inspire their teams to make it a reality. This vision is grounded in empathy—the ability to truly understand customer needs and expectations. Leaders who listen deeply and act on what they hear set the tone for an organization where customer voices are valued.

A powerful example of this is the use of tools like Net Promoter Score (NPS) to measure and improve CX. NPS provides actionable data by asking a simple but profound question: “How likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague?” The insights from NPS feedback empower leaders to uncover opportunities, address pain points, and amplify what’s working.

Beyond gathering data, leadership is about accountability. Acting on customer feedback demonstrates to both customers and employees that their voices matter. For example, when customers share concerns through NPS, addressing those issues builds trust and loyalty. Similarly, celebrating positive feedback energizes teams and reinforces the behaviors that drive success.

Creating a culture focused on CX also means aligning the entire organization around shared goals. When leaders prioritize customer experience, they inspire their teams to innovate, improve processes, and deliver consistent value. This alignment is the foundation for transforming customer feedback into tangible results. The vision of delivering an exceptional CX experience can start with the leader but must be enacted by everyone in the organization.

Consider the role of benchmarking in this process. Comparing CX performance with peers in our industry helps leaders identify where they excel and where they can improve. This datadriven approach fosters a mindset of continuous improvement and positions businesses to stay ahead of customer expectations and market

trends. We actually work together to improve the perception of the fence and gate industry.

Leaders who champion CX also leave a lasting legacy. By embedding customer focus into the DNA of their organizations, they not only improve today’s outcomes but also build a foundation for long-term growth. As technology makes it easier to gather insights, it’s up to leaders to ensure those insights drive change.

As leaders, our greatest responsibility is the experience we create for our customers. Are you ready to lead your organization into a customercentric future? The tools and strategies are here— the next move is yours.

To help companies in our industry leverage their customer experience, AFA has created Fence Pulse, an online NPS platform for leaders dedicated to track their NPS journey and benchmark their scores against other leaders in the industry. To see the platform in action, visit the AFA booth at FenceTech in Salt Lake City, or online at americanfenceassociation.com.

“ Chain link fence is the most produced product in the world. And it is absorbed by every culture in the world.”
~ Frank Gehry, the world’s foremost living architect

Frank Gehry changed the way the world looked at chain link fence. Gehry used chain link in some of his most successful projects, starting with the Mall at Santa Monica Place*, and continuing throughout his history-making career.

There are a lot of other descriptions of chain link fence that have slipped into our culture over the years. One that I hear repeatedly echoes what Frank Gehry observed – just expressed a little differently.

“Chain link fence? Isn’t that the fencing you see everywhere? I see it around prisons, along the highway, around power plants, in my neighborhood, everywhere.”

Yes, it is pretty much everywhere. And do you know why?

Because it works!

Today’s chain link is still the most used, the most specified, the most versatile, and the most costeffective fencing product on the planet. Roughly half of the multi-billion-dollar fence industry in North America is chain link based.

And everything about this industry – and this product -is going to be on display in Salt Lake City at FenceTech 2025. By the way, a little-known fact: What is now FenceTech actually started in 1969 as a trade show owned by members of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute -CLFMI.

Now, do not be surprised if you “see chain link fencing everywhere” at FenceTech 2025. You are going to see more exhibitors showing chain link

products than any other fencing material. There is going to be a big educational program on how to use chain link fence to increase your company’s profitability in 2025. At the AFA Awards Program, you will get to meet the contractor whose company installed the winning project in the 2025 Les Grube Memorial Design Award* competition. If you want to see what all the fuss is about regarding chain link and its affiliated products, stop by the CLFMI Booth at FenceTech (Booth #1931, right next to the AFA headquarter area).

• If you are a contractor, you should come by to see all of the information available to help you improve the way you market, sell (and upsell), install, and improve your chain link projects.

• If you are a supplier, learn about ways to broaden your customer base and build new partnerships with the leaders in the chain link part of the fence industry.

• If you are an architect or specifier, you can get the guidelines and specifications you need to design and build your next project from the recognized Subject Matter Experts in the chain link field, CLFMI’s Technical Committee.

• If you manufacture chain link fabric, framework, fittings, or other chain link-related products, find out the many ways CLFMI Membership can improve your bottom line

through our market expansion and costreduction programs.

You do not have to wander around through hundreds of displays in Salt Lake City to find answers to your questions about the most-used product in the fence industry, Just start your journey at Booth 1931, and we will make sure you get the information you need to link your company to a profitable 2025.

Quieter and Cleaner Worksites –IDTechEx Explores Electric Construction Vehicles

Construction vehicles running on diesel can be a creator of constant costs and air pollution, with continuous negative impacts on the environment and communities.

IDTechEx’s report, Electric Vehicles in Construction 2024-2044: Technologies, Players, Forecasts, explores the new emergence of electric construction vehicles, covering battery chemistries and major players within the market, alongside the positive effects on workers and society.

REDUCING LONG-TERM COSTS WITH ELECTRIFICATION.

The goal for electric construction vehicles is to achieve maximum productivity, reliability, and efficiency, while keeping costs minimized. Finding the right battery chemistry for electric construction machines is, therefore, a necessary consideration so that costs can be low enough to ensure the total cost of ownership over the vehicle's lifetime is cheaper than diesel alternatives. Unlike cars, these machines require steady power over longer durations, so don’t require as high power densities.

Hydraulic systems currently used to move large machines could be replaced with fully electric linear actuators alongside the electrification of construction vehicles. This change could bring about less need for vehicle maintenance as they become cleaner and more robust, resulting in lower machine running costs.

BATTERY CHEMISTRIES AND REQUIREMENTS.

LFP batteries are used inside more than half of electric machines as they provide durability, and the performance requirements for construction machines to run efficiently. While NMC batteries have slightly higher performance rates than LFP, including battery energy and power density factors, they come at a greater cost. The greater energy density associated with NMC could make them a more suitable choice for smaller machines, as they would provide greater battery life within a smaller chassis.

Due to availability varying across regions, NMC is more commonly used in Europe, and LFP in China, with IDTechEx reporting that over 75% of European and North American pack manufacturers use NMC.

There have been questions surrounding the ability of electric machines to complete a full day’s work on one charge. Fast-charging, tethering or battery swapping could solve this problem, but most newer machines have big enough batteries to carry out an average day’s working requirements with relative comfort.

BENEFITS FOR BOTH WORKERS AND SOCIETY.

Noise pollution reduction is one of construction vehicle electrification's largest and most obvious effects. Not only will operators be better able to hear and give clear instructions without the need for noise-cancelling headphones, but the surrounding areas of construction sites won’t be so affected by loud engines and vibrations, meaning there could be fewer complaints about ongoing work. Air quality will be improved in a similar way, as the smoky emissions from diesel engines will no longer create an unclean environment, which again will benefit not only the health and wellbeing of workers, but people in the wider community.

Commercial Project Job Site Safety

Safety is paramount. It does not matter if you are residential or commercial, the safety and well-being of you, your employees, your customers, and even innocent bystanders should always remain a part of your state of mind and included in planning for all activities. Safety should be an inherent part of how you do business. I have watched many fence installation videos on social media and even on podcasts. Not calling anyone out, but some of our industry leaders need to take a refresher course on job site safety.

If you are looking to grow in the commercial markets, be prepared to make safety a daily part of your business operations plan.

Every commercial project with plans and specification addresses safety requirements in the general conditions. An owner, architect, and construction manager are not interested in taking on the liability of a careless and unsafe fence company. Here are a few things you should do to make sure your team is focused on safety when working on commercial projects:

1) Have a written safety program. This is your companies’ policies and procedures that outline how to keep people safe at your place of business, and wherever it may take you. This should include written policy, hazard identification, response protocols, and continuing education and improvement. This is not a one and done document and should be updated annually to accommodate changes in the work environment.

2) Invest in personal protective equipment (PPE). Hard Hats, proper gloves, safety vests, eye protection, and hearing protection are a must. Don’t forget to consider different geography or climates require different equipment. Also make sure that you have the right size for all employees.

3) Have regular “Toolbox Talks.” These are informal group discussions about safety and safety needs. Safety is a mindset and should be part of your culture. Make it part of everyday activities.

4) Embrace OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and training requirements. OSHA standards are published requirements that serve as criteria for measuring whether employers are following the rules and being safe. Having each of your employees carry an OSHA 10 card is relatively cost-effective way to show that they all understand general safety and hazards present on a site. This is also a great way to add value to your company and sell more work.

There is a lot more value than just safe and healthy employees. Proactive planning and training not only help your people understand but could open opportunity for bidding more complex and regulated projects. For example, having your team trained on Hazardous Material Handling may not seem necessary but could help you land a project for the local water treatment plant or power plant. Safer workers lower your Experience Modification Rate (EMR) which means lowered insurance premiums. The most important value is safe and healthy workers work better, have increased employee morale, and are there to do the jobs you need them to every day. Make safety a part of your plan.

Start-Up Stories

SHAPES Unlimited, Inc.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

In 1996, John Sullivan and Jack Colonna merged their extensive experience in aluminum extrusion and its application to the building materials markets, their vast network of door and window contacts, and local material supply and fabrication providers to incorporate a new venture they called SHAPES Unlimited, Inc. to service the midwestern U.S. market.

In those early days, Sullivan and Colonna drove the forklifts, loaded their own trucks, and occasionally personally delivered orders to their customers. With a focus on just-in-time delivery, the business quickly expanded from a small warehouse in Youngstown, Ohio, to a series of expanded facilities and a current 100,000-squarefoot-distribution-center, with significant growth in the residential/commercial fencing/railing/gates sectors. The business was family owned and operated until John’s untimely passing in 2015. Since then, ownership has turned to seasoned executive leaders to drive the business forward.

Doug Rende assumed the role of president and CEO in 2023. With over 30 years of executive leadership experience, Rende has driven successful organic and acquisitive growth strategies, sustainable branding initiatives, and digital transformations in the consumer durables, construction, and building materials industries. Over the course of his career, he has successfully led mature businesses, profitable start-ups and acquisitive growth ventures. He is a native Philadelphian, and a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's University and the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton, Aresty Executive School.

Currently, SHAPES Unlimited, Inc. services accounts in 24 states with an ever-expanding offering of door/ window and fence/rail/gates components and assembled sections. To address their rapid expansion, Rende says SHAPES has broadened their material supply via exclusive domestic and offshore supply agreements with best-inclass manufacturers, along with significant investments in people, Lean Six Sigma training and upgraded, automated assembly, powder coating and assembly equipment. And SHAPES continues to grow. Rende says the company is actively assessing acquisitive and/or greenfield geographic expansion for regional satellite locations and new headquarter facilities. “Our bullish view for 2025 and beyond is furthered by our new exclusive relationship with PrimeAlux. This revolutionary new product brings the best in aesthetic design, ease/speed of installation and quantifiable performance to the fencing industry, with an upcoming full launch at FENCETECH 2025. In all instances, we subscribe to the concept that ‘you can’t manage what you don’t measure,’ and accordingly have worked closely with the AFA in the development of the Net Promoter Score/FencePulse customer satisfaction tool to establish our benchmarking and associated continuous improvement efforts.”

In addition, through their Northeast Ohio/ Youngstown area networks, SHAPES is extending their approach in creating career opportunities to individuals needing a second chance. “Through these affiliations we are

THE MILLS FAMILY FENCES TOGETHER

Ken Mills opened Mills Fence Company in 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio while also working the night shift full-time at General Motors (GM). Today, the company has four locations and over 150 employees and subcontractors. Ken’s childhood dream of owning his own business is now a $40+ million family owned and operated enterprise.

“Mills Fence has been a family business since its inception in 1970 with several family members having worked here both past and present,” says chief operating officer Jonas Allen.

Ken’s wife Patti did the payroll in the early days and worked in the office during her summer breaks from teaching. In 1975, Ken’s brother, Alton Mills, became a co-owner with him until his retirement in 2005. Ken’s nephew, John Lyttle, who had worked in the company for several years, became his new co-owner and the two continue to run the company together today. Ken does much of the purchasing while John oversees sales. Ken’s daughter Ashley Smith Mills oversees the access control division. His other daughter Catherine Mills-Reynolds was also part of the

management team, but was recently hired by the AFA to be their director of government relations & industry standards. Catherine’s husband, Kyle Reynolds, is an estimator.

“There’s an inherent trust and understanding that comes with working alongside family,” says Lyttle. “The role everyone plays is based on their strengths and interests. Ken has always enjoyed the ‘wheeling & dealing’ part of purchasing while I’ve always enjoyed selling. Ashley has a science background, so she has an understanding of the more technical aspects of gate operators.”

Although Mills Fence Company is still a family business at its core, it has evolved into a “business of families.”

“Several employees have brought their own family members into the company. Fathers working with their sons and brothers working together has also been a long-standing tradition amongst Mills employees,” says Allen.

While working side-by-side with the people you trust the most is rewarding, Ken has always strived for employees to maintain a work/life balance.

“It’s a joy to come to work because our people want to do what is best for the business and our customers,” says Lyttle. “However, it’s important that our employees don’t bring business home with them. We do our best to follow Ken’s advice that fence issues can only be addressed and fixed at the office.”

Growth has always been important to Ken and Mills Fence Company doesn’t have plans to stop any time soon.

“We already have plans for more locations and with a Mills family member currently working with local, state, and federal governments to codify standards on behalf of the entire fence industry,” says Lyttle. “Our future couldn’t be brighter!”

creating an eco-system to train and advance our team, as evidenced by an average eight-year tenure, with over 35% of our workforce coming from these agencies for people needing this second chance,” says Rende. “We’ve developed 20+ new training and advancement curriculums, resulting in 40 promotions, increased responsibilities, new and expanded skill sets, with an average base salary increase of 21%. In other words, ‘If you teach a man to fish . . .’”

Today, SHAPES Unlimited, Inc. is a privately held fabricator/wholesale distributor of aluminum building products serving the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest markets. They provide a variety of aluminum extrusions to the window, door, fencing and railing sectors and stock over 30,000 SKUs in their distribution center. “We offer a variety of programs to suit our customer’s needs, from immediate delivery from

our warehouses to customized stocking programs and ‘Master Supply Agreements,’" Rende says. “With in-house fabrication, powder coating facilities and fence panel and gate assembly, we deliver ready-to-install products to a customer’s facility or job site. By sourcing our products from suppliers, both domestically and internationally, we provide our customers with the required quality, JIT service, competitive pricing and value-added supply chain solutions.”

Standards for Design, Fabrication and Installation of Wood Fence

ASTM F537-01, titled Standard Specification for Design, Fabrication, and Installation of Fences

Constructed of Wood and Related Materials, serves as a critical guideline in the construction and maintenance of wooden fences. This standard, established by ASTM International, provides comprehensive requirements for the structural integrity, material quality, and installation practices necessary for safe and long-lasting wooden fencing solutions.

WHY ASTM F537-01 MATTERS:

Ensures Structural Integrity

Wooden fences are subject to environmental stressors, including wind, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. ASTM F537-01 outlines the necessary design specifications and material properties to ensure fences can withstand these conditions without compromising their structural integrity.

Promotes Safety

Poorly designed or installed fences can pose risks to property owners, passersby, and even pets. By adhering to ASTM F537-01, builders ensure that fences are securely anchored and free of defects that might lead to collapse, splintering, or other hazards.

Encourages Durability

Longevity is a significant concern for wooden fences, given their exposure to the elements. ASTM F537-01 specifies the types of wood and treatments that enhance resistance to rot, pests, and weathering, extending the lifespan of the fence and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Standardization Across the Industry

By providing a unified set of guidelines, ASTM F537-01 ensures consistency and quality in wooden fence construction across different regions and builders. This standardization benefits consumers and professionals by setting clear expectations and benchmarks for performance.

Supports Regulatory Compliance

Many local building codes reference ASTM standards as part of their requirements. Following ASTM F537-01 can help builders and property owners avoid legal complications and ensure compliance with regional regulations.

Aids in Cost Efficiency

Adherence to this standard helps reduce costs associated with premature failures, repairs, and replacements. A well-built fence that meets ASTM F537-01 specifications will require fewer interventions over its lifespan, saving time and resources.

APPLICATIONS OF ASTM F537-01: ASTM F537-01 applies to a variety of settings, including:

• Residential Properties: Providing privacy, security, and aesthetic appeal to homes.

• Commercial Areas: Enclosing businesses and securing properties.

• Public Spaces: Safeguarding playgrounds, parks, and other community areas.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT ASTM

F537-01”

For professionals fence builders, adherence to ASTM F537-01 involves:

• Selecting Quality Materials: Using the recommended wood types and treatments for strength and durability.

• Precise Design: Following the standard’s specifications for spacing, height, and structural components.

• Proper Installation: Employing techniques that meet the guidelines to ensure safety and stability.

ASTM F537-01 is a cornerstone standard for those involved in the construction and maintenance of wooden fences. Its focus on safety, durability, and industry consistency makes it an invaluable resource for achieving high-quality results. By following its guidelines, builders and property owners can ensure that their fences not only meet but exceed expectations for performance and longevity.

For those planning to install or repair a wooden fence, referencing ASTM F537-01 is a step toward achieving a secure, durable, and aesthetically pleasing outcome for your customers and for y our company.
