CITY FACILITIES TO BE POWERED BY 100% RENEWABLE Electricity Farmers Branch stands to become the first Texas city to be powered by 100 percent locally generated renewable electricity. During a recent City Council meeting, City officials approved a plan that will turn a former landfill site into an electricity producing solar farm. The 20+ acre site, located along the President George Bush Turnpike and Valley View lane, will be leased to BQ Energy Development who will design, build, and operate the solar farm. The City will enter an agreement with BQ Energy to purchase the electricity created from the panels at a fixed price to power 100% of its electricity usage at City facilities. The project is estimated to be operational in the Fall of 2024. While there are not currently plans to offer the power produced by this solar farm to residents, City leaders encourage residents to take advantage of the Farmers Branch Power Switch program which offers renewable energy options at a volume pricing. More on the Power Switch program can be found at fbpowerswitch.com.
city manager charles s. cox announces retirement City Manager Charles Cox has announced his intent to retire at the end of May. After 35 years working for local governments, Mr. Cox says he believes this is the ideal time to step down. In a letter to the City Council, Mr. Cox said, in part, “It has been my privilege to work with supportive Mayors, City Councils, and staff during my years at Farmers Branch. I believe that I will be leaving the City in a better place than when I arrived in 1993 – a testament to our collaborative efforts to make Farmers Branch a great place to live, work and play. The City is in incredible shape and fiscally strong. Our pay-as-you-go strategies supplemented with grants and minimal debt have resulted in substantial new, renovated and well-maintained infrastructure. Services to residents are considered award-winning and world-class. Employee productivity, satisfaction and engagement are at historically high levels.” The City will host a retirement celebration for Mr. Cox at the Manske Library on Tuesday, May 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. His last day in the office will be Tuesday, May 31.
