by By Michael A.D. Smith, DDiv., PsyD/DHA(c)., MBA., MBCCour video team to discover and implemented an on-line live video streaming service via the Facebook app so that our members could continue to engage in worship as a church body. Even though this was our first congregation total shut down experience, it was not our first time having to lift and shift quickly to a new way of worshipping. When hurricane Ike hit the Houston area in 2008, our city experienced massive flooding and massive debris along the pathway to our church; whereas we began using teleconference calls to continue to share the Good News of God’s Word to our church body by any means necessary.
As in all things, we thank God for the season as it allotted ministries to continue to serve the people in real-time in the name of the Lord, despite being affected by COVID-19. As we know, COVID caused a rather drastic interruption into our normal day to day operation of worship and living, but the resiliency of our church family to seek new and varying connection to get the Word out to His people with available resources by accommodating our parishioners never cease to amaze me! We still have not had all our members come back to church in person yet, but we are praying that they will return sooner than later and that the Lord will also send newer in-person members too.
In my opinion, based upon my own personal conversations and research, some congregates are being cautious about how they choose to gather in large
crowds as this virus created a stigmatized population of people being mindful that the virus is still possibility contagious. As stated earlier, some congregants have underlined health conditions and fear embracing others in church again, as it was so familiar to us prior to COVID. Likewise, for some caretakers, they are also apprehensive to return to church being that most of their patients have underline health conditions and that is concerning to them.
Moreso, being that we are now in a post-pandemic state, for approximately 1-2-years futuristically speaking, it is with great apprehensible expectations that in-person attendance to churches on Sunday’s will not increase vastly anytime soon, as it once did, pre-pandemic; even though most church doors are now back open without social distance restrictions for collective worship. On the other hand, people have been coming back to church via hybrid and/or virtually online. This new culture of believers feels as though the mandated stay at-home order allowed them to worship the Word of God during Covid, at its highest peak at home and it should still be okay today to continue to partake in worship services online whereas worshiping in the sanctuary is no longer the only available option to worship when they can receive God’s Word via streaming online. Likewise, some congregates have also started Bible Study podcasting on their own, whereas they have several followers, birthing a new worship experience. Likewise, Bible studies, funerals and all the other worshiping experiences that
church’s offers can also be done virtually. Furthermore, with church services being streamed virtually in most capacities, it prompted opportunities for many congregants to visit other church services on-line too, hearing various pastors and viewing various ministries while engaging in the worship experience; for some, those new experiences have sparked a kindred spirit within the online parishioner community to change their membership from one church to another. The pandemic also increased online giving of tithes and offerings securely electronically too.
3. How has it affected your ministry?
Consequently, COVID has affected our ministry in ways that has opened new opportunities for us to expand our ministry outside the walls of the church building; even though we have always sought new opportunities to meet the needs of our members in the church and our community. COVID just happened to have thrust us even more into the community to meet and greet others. Our on-going visibly in and around our church location has allowed us to meet more neighbors and local business owners in person; whereas we discovered there is still a diversified demographic population of people, eateries and other businesses within our community that have needs to be met. COVID-19 has also affected how we in-take new members, perform Baptisms and administer the Lord’s Supper. Let's start with new members joining our church. We begin accepting new members virtually in 2020 instead of in-person. This would occur during live
April-June 2023
stream, at the invitation period as the Holy Spirit led me, I would invite attendees to come to Jesus online. If they were without a church home, maybe they had been out of the church for a while or they needed to rededicate their life to Christ, they could join/reunite with our church. I would also ask that they send us a direct message via our church social media page and to include their name, phone number and/or e-mail address whereas a member would reach out to them.
Gratefully, individuals adhered to the call of the invitation virtually to give their life to Christ and/or rededication.
4. What are you doing differently to share the gospel & your ministry since the start of the Pandemic?
Well, I can say one of the things that we're doing differently now is being more intentionally focused on our ministries in everything we do. For example, we carried out Baptism during the pandemic where there could only be 2-3 immediate family members present to witness the baptism. Once the new member which may have been baptized or they joined by Christian experience, we orientated them virtually and we continue this same practice today.
We had to rethink communion because we were unable to gather in-person during Covid. We've always used pre-package communion cups with wafers. Initially we sorted our church membership roster by zip codes. Each deacon would take their appointed zip codes and deliver communion to our members’ homes. As we would live stream communion service, we would
partake in the commemoration together, as one body in Christ including members participating via teleconference.
The following months after COVID’s initial stay-at-home- mandate, we designated a day of the week with a 2-hour window for members to stop by the church to pick up communion and be prepared to take it along with the church family during communion Sunday. For anyone watching online another option was to take a capful of grape juice if they were unable to pick up the communion package from the church. For we know partaking of the wafer/bread and wine/juice for communion is symbolic; yet we had to exercise agility and consider all circumstances.
On March 11, 2021, the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden presented First Lady Linda and I of the New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church a Thank You recognition letter in person for our willingness and uncompromising efforts to serve and assist the citizens of Houston, Texas with the COVID relief and recovery efforts. As the President stated, “They represent the best of who we are as Americans, and it is important that we show our appreciation for the sacrifices that they are making. Thank you for being a part of my visit to Texas. I look forward to continuing the partnership between Federal, State, and local leaders as we recover from this disaster”

5. Do you think Pastors should have a worldview or a local view when it comes to their ministry?
Since the pandemic, and well over a year now, we have been hosting a radio segment on Envision Radio which is another platform for sharing the gospel
I believe Pastors should have a world view and a local view respectfully when it comes to ministry. From my perspective, a worldview is a set of beliefs that underlies and shapes all human beings’ thoughts and actions globally as a society in which we must live and conduct ourselves. Since attending theological seminary, I’ve learned the importance of sharpening my skills and understanding the studies in systematic theology, ancient history of the Bible, culture and doctrines, just to name a few and how to build a framework of my own personal beliefs, thoughts and actions from the lens of a global world. I feel our ministry is extended worldwide, whereas it is available to reach the masses of those
listening, regardless of location and it’s an encouraging Word of God to all.
As far as my local view perspective when it comes to ministry, this is closest to my heart because it affects my day to day living, with my wife, children, the future of my grandchildren, family and the people around me that I have been ordained to shepherd. I believe some people hear the Word of God and sees the Word of God working in us and through us by our speech and actions in the church and within our communities, which makes a significant difference in the lives we meet and touch permeating the gospel throughout their lives as they go forth and touch other lives as well. In our community, we engage with the people for the common good of meeting the needs of all of God’s children’s and its beauty, edification and revitalizing of the community in which we serve.
Since God is omnipresent, in our ministry here in Houston, Texas and abroad, just the same, our ministries try to stay focused on the mission of the church to “Saving Souls and Maturing the Saints”. We are in an underserved community; however, we have been able to thrive continually because we take our ministry outside of the four walls of the church to serve. We have a presence and view approach to engaging with our community. They see us working, ministering, and serving the people. They know us,they know our faces and names. In developing and sustaining an on-going relationship with our neighbors, we seek out to meet the needs of the people right where they are, notwithstanding their Christian
beliefs, economic status and/or lifestyle preference.
6. Please tell us about your ministry and /or your church. How long have you been pastoring there and what does the future hold for your congregation?
I have been pastoring the New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church of Houston for greater than 30 years. On April 26, 1992, I preached my first sermon as pastor. Overnight, I went from an associate minister to a full-time pastor. This appointment was new for my wife and I along with our 3 young daughters at that time, Tamara (12), Crystal (6) & Jessica (5). During my tenure, we have definitely “Walked by Faith and not by Sight”, according to II Corinthians 5:7. I believe in teaching that our greatest purpose as a living body of people is to "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15.
Since pastoring the New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, we’ve had a food pantry, providing fruits, vegetables, non-perishables, and food vouchers to all of those in need, in and out of our community. Likewise, we have also provided hot meals to seniors, churches, and schools within our local community area. I was asked if I would teach Bible Study at the W. Leo Daniels Tower senior living center, across from our church. I agreed and taught the seniors every Thursday evening for 3
In addition, the CARE ministry (Concern About Reaching Everyone) was birthed, whereas we go and visit the sick and shut-in in their homes and make hospital
the station and cook it for them; in addition to inviting their families to join them on-site since fire fighters usually work 24-hour shifts for several days at one time which would take them away from their families for days at time. So, as a socially responsible community
In as such, on April 7, 2022, The House of Representative Congresswoman, Sylvia Garcia, of the 2944th District of Texas, presented Lady Linda Smith and Pastor David Smith a Congressional Record of Recognition for being
Houston-area leaders that are selflessly serving their neighborhood.
Representative Garcia stated, "Many strong community leaders go unnoticed. They serve silently every day and draw very little attention to themselves, quietly doing their work. Yet through their service, they enrich and improve the lives of everyone around them. Pastor Smith and Lady Smith are both quiet, everyday heroes who put smiles on faces across the district particularly in the Eastex/Jensen Freeway community. Through their faith-based work, they spread positivity and hope to countless Houstonians”. To read more about pending legislation in honor of my wife and I, please visit Congress.gov >Congressional Record>April 7, 2022, > Issue: Vol. 168, No. 62 – Daily EditionAs for the future of New Bethlehem MBC I see our church family engaging more in bridging the gap between our youth and senior generations. It is so important to go back to the basics of our Christian foundational teachings no matter how the world changes, our moral and spiritual values will never change. New Bethlehem MBC will also continue evolving as a body of believers in Jesus Christ to deliver the Good News message locally and to the masses globally via the world wide web; yet adjust our methods of instructions that are being shaped and modeled. For we are to preach and teach God’s Word from the Bible.
up in a single-family home, my mother would read the Bible nightly right before going to bed. I was always asking her questions about being good and going to heaven. When she would read to me & my siblings, she would describe what heaven and hell was like as she studied the readings from the Bible and Sunday School lessons. So, as I begin reading and memorizing scriptures on my own, Matthew 5:8 became one of my favorite scriptures. Likewise, as a child, before I was saved, I read a commentary and realized that sin was tied to being bad.
8. Please share with us about your podcast on retirement and what prompted you to start it?
7. Please share your favorite scripture. My favorite scripture is Matthew 5:8 which reads “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God”. Growing
Our daughters Tamara, Crystal & Jessica encouraged us to start the podcast. As we were sitting around the dinner table talking, they thought we had a wealth of knowledge and experiences and they felt as though someone in the world needs to hear them. Therefore, they encouraged us to start podcasting to share our life experiences. We contemplated the idea for a while before undertaking the endeavor as our daughters helped us formulate relevant content for us to go into a studio and record our story. Our first podcast was published on July 1, 2022, introducing ourselves and how we met back in 1976 when Linda moved from Smithfield, Virginia to Houston, Texas. First Lady Linda, and I will celebrate 38 years of marital bliss this June 2023. We are the proud parents of three beautiful daughters with bonus son-in-law’s as they have their own families now and we are also greatly blessed with 4 grandchildren, Jayla (22), Tamia (17),
Chandler (16) and King David (5).
Nonetheless, Linda and I had corporate careers while I was also pastoring to God’s people.Once my wife retired, she jokingly began calling us “The Retired Party of 2”. She would also post and tag that title to our social media sites and it caught on like wildfire. There have beentimes when we are out in public, and people will come up to us saying…hey I know you; you guys are the Retired Party of 2. You can view our retirement journey on YouTube channel, Retired Party of 2 Podcast.
9. You and First Lady are also authors please share with us why you wrote the book & where can we buy it.
First Lady Linda and I always wanted to write a book, but we just kept procrastinating the idea. Around 2018, while attending the Thomas A. Dorsey National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, we attended a book writing class, facilitated by Julia Royston of BK Royston Publishing. I wanted to write a book or tell our story to leave a legacy for our grandchildren and generations to come after we are gone to glory.
Therefore, we contacted Mrs. Julia Royston and asked if she would assist us with writing our first book. She agreed. Mrs. Julia Royston was instrumental in assisting us until the book was finished.
My wife and I wrote this book with a biblical view in mind. We want our readers to know there is a biblical structure for the family. It should always start with God being the Creator, the
head, followed by Man being the head/priest of his household. As the man follows Christ then the wife shall follow him, which allows the children to follow their parent’s leadership and training.
As authors, Linda & I have also had the opportunity of being featured at the National Black Book Festival in October 2022 as well as for the holidays we were featured with our publisher, B.K. Royston virtually on the Author
Showcase Books in November 2022. We are grateful to God as He sees our needs to have the Brownstone Book Club reach out to us as well, they chose our book as the book of the month February 18, 2023, highlighting us as authors to come out and personally share our story of how family really does matter at Grimaldis Pizza in Sugarland, Texas. You may find our book Family Matters by David L. and Linda H. Smith on Amazon, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble, eBay, Walmart or Gumroad.com/The Smiths and Cash App us at $SmithFamilyMatters. As it’s always said you can choose your friends, but not your family. Family is Family! Always remember Family Matters and a family that prays together stays together!
10. Please can you give some advice to young Pastors starting out in ministry. My advice to any young pastor starting out in the Christian ministry is to make sure to have and keep a personal relationship with God first as well as to have a fervent prayer life. Moreover, the pastor should continue to be a student of the Word and to stay engaged in the ministries of the church. Pay attention to the ever-evolving cultures of our youth,
engage in dialogue with them and listening to the wisdom of our seniors. The pastor needs to also under girth himself with a mentor, confidant that will minister and pray with him, hold the young pastor accountable for what is said, actions taken in the church and their actions outside of the church too. Every pastor needs a pastor. Here are a few additional suggestions to consider:
● Likewise, a young pastor should also make every effort to build a positive relationship with the elders of the church, deacon board, trustees, and associate ministers.
● Meet with the elders/deacons of the church often to review the bylaws that governs the order of the church.
● The young pastor needs to discipline themselves to always remember, God first, family and then the church, in that order. I would tell him to keep in mind, the parishioners are watching your every move and actions taken.
● Do not neglect the welfare of your wife and/or your children. Remember, family matters.
● Take time to study and prepare for Sunday morning worship and Bible Studies. No Saturday night specials (Waiting until Saturday night to prepare a sermon). People souls are at stake.

1. Establish boundaries, reestablish boundaries,
2. Forgiveness frees us from constant torment, of either our own actions or others actions towards us.
3. Confess it all quietly, in a judge free zone but honestly & completely and begin again
4. Ask for forgiveness
5. Walk Towards Your Healing Path
If our Hair is our Crown & Glory our Bodies are our Temples and our Home truly is is our own unique Sanctuary. It is SO very important to
have ORDER in every aspect of our lives! And ALWAYS aim high by keeping our minds stayed on God, Purpose & Assignment! Remember pretty can become or look UGLY Real Quick! Give the example of my "YouTube Sister Community" Being competitive with our inner circle turns real sisters or friendships sour. However, if we push, encourage, support one another whoever arrives at the destination first should naturally reach back and secure positive reinforcement for our sister (s) Knowing that there is always room at the top for more winners!!! Our inner circle, is Very Important also....who do you share & connect with??? Keep in mind that your Network is YOUR Net Worth! Your Healing is unique and special and your request to heal, is just like accepting Christ into your life "whosoever will" it’s a journey & a choice!!! Ousting & confronting the demons of your present or past life, takes courage, readiness and preparedness, a willing spirit and a confident mindset....that there is greater days ahead and that you can begin again. As long as YOU are ready to do YOUR work!
● Write a note to your past self. If you need to apologize to her do so
● Write a note to your present self. Say to her exactly what you need to say in order to heal
● Write a note to your future self. Say to her Your expectations moving forward
Moving forward our MOOD is NOT to Chase but to Attract! Attract, wealth, true happiness, health, love & lasting real connections & friendships!

been that far from my friends or family before but I wanted to play basketball professionally and this was my ticket to do so. I was excited but also very scared of this situation. Imagine going to a place where you don't know the language, anyone or anything but you are expected to perform and be the best player and not lose. If your team loses too much the team will send you home no matter how well you are playing.
Columbia to Warsaw, Poland to France to Belgium and Holland. All in my first year and my first experience of playing basketball professionally. I had never
The contracts you think are guaranteed aren't and sometimes they won't pay you at all. Also mostly all overseas contracts are just one year long. So you can only imagine the pressure that an american player goes through every game let alone the season. So going into my first season not knowing what to expect it was scary. When I went to Bogata , Columbia I didn't speak the language and they didn't have police there so people who were in the military were the cops and I had two assigned to me at all times if I left the hotel I stayed in because of Americans getting kidnapped.
I had a great time playing but it was lots of crazy things out there . The gym was in this concrete building with no windows and the court was surrounded by a cage. The people would light flairs in the gym so it was a beyond crazy experience. I still enjoyed myself even though if I went to walk around anywhere in the city I had those armed guys with me. Before the game would start the coach would talk for 15 minutes in spanish and I would ask my teammate who spoke english , "what did the coach say" and he would say the coach said give you the ball when you were open . I laughed because he talked about 15 minutes so I know it was more said than that. As the season went along my team was a good team and there are so many stories that I can write about when I played ball there, like the fact that they always were late with paying us for no reason at all, but that's another story for another time. I played in Columbia for a couple months because it was my summer job and to see if I liked it overseas. Now I came home from Columbia and I signed a contract to go and play in Warsaw , Poland or so I thought. I thought it was a contract for that year and come to find out it was a try out for me and the other American player.
The team released me because I wasn't the height they wanted. So, I wasn't the height they wanted, it had nothing to do with my game, not at all. Also I was there for a month without pay so I didn't receive any money at all. I didn't have a car so I had to walk 3 miles to practice everyday . It was an interesting
experience to say the least.
Get ready for this, I get a ticket home and while I'm on the flight home I get an emergency call on the plane from my agent saying to get off the plane because he has another job for me in Paris , France. I will tell you about that story in the next article. If you ever want to listen to more about my Journey or the journey of many other athletes check out my podcast An Athletes Journey available on Spotify , Apple podcast , Amazon Music and other podcast platforms. You also can follow me on social media @traviswreed on Instagram and Travis W Reed on Facebook and Travis W Reed on LinkedIn. I also post several times a week on my social media platforms about my incredible basketball journey and many others and I also have a LinkTree as well. You can always contact me through any of those platforms. Thanks for taking the time out to read my article and I will tell you more about my first year overseas in the next issue of Envision Magazine.
I'm pretty sure like many of us. When you go to purchase eggs. (which are almost like gold these days). You check inside the carton to make sure that none of the eggs are broken. Even with our best efforts sometimes we get home to find that when we open the carton one of the eggs has cracked. How we ask. How did this happen? I know I checked before I left the store. I was careful when I bought them in the house. So how? Just how did this happen?
Well even though we are upset about the cracked egg. We neither return it to the store nor throw it out. I hope. Life sometimes makes us feel like a cracked egg. Almost as if we lose our value because of our cracks. We ourselves sometimes feel worthless because of our crack. We don't feel we measure up to the rest of the carton. I mean the world. We forget that it is not our shell that makes us worthy, but what's on the inside is where the value is. There is value on the inside of you. You are still usable.
How do I know? Even with the crack the egg can still be scrambled, fried, and put
into recipes. I don't think you have ever seen anyone scramble an egg with the shell on. We must be cracked to get the best out of us. So many times others may have looked at your crack and thought there was nothing you could be used for. They often didn't believe in you or your abilities. They were not ready to accept your cracks. So just like the egg. They put you back until there wasn't another option. You were sometimes the last choice. All because of your crack. You are stressing over the small crack. Did you forget that you will have to be hit against something hard to bring out all that you can be? You will go through twists and turns in this life so that you know that it was for your making. Whatever that looks like. We must be broken open so that we can be used for what we were designed to do. A cake is nothing without an egg. Cornbread would not taste the same without an egg. These things don't taste different because of the crack. They taste better because the shell was broken open and added to the recipe. You are here to add flavor to things. To bring your uniqueness to a situation. To allow people to see that even though
you have been broken there is still purpose in you. Never discard an egg that has a crack. Never think that you can't be used because of a crack. Don't let a crack bother you. It's the breaking that shows who you really are. I hope that in your breaking you know that you will make things better. Even if you are the last one out of the carton. Sometimes everything has been done to protect you and things still happen. It's just a crack. Get ready for the breaking.
We live in a world of excess and overindulgence. A world where people “buy things they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t like”. The lack of financial literacy in our society has led to an increase in stress and anxiety. With ‘inflation”, gentrification, and the rising cost of “affordable housing” it is more important than ever to become financially responsible, or prepare yourself for a lifetime of despair. Look around you, tell me what you see, homelessness, people starving, and drug addiction, people struggling just to provide for themselves let alone a family. A life of perpetual “survival mode”.
In this capitalistic world we live in, I’m often asked why they don’t teach us about personal finance in K 12, and my reply it’s plain and simple they need us to be mindless consumers, that’s how all this works. If I had known what a credit score was and how it could and did impact my future buying power, I would not have signed up for a credit card with
a 24% interest rate and not made a payment for 8 years, in order to receive a free T shirt and a slice of pizza.
If I had a simple introduction into how to make a budget and how it will help me control my money, rather than letting my money control me, I would have not been living from paycheck to paycheck and dealing with bouts of financial anxiety at the beginning of every month when most of my debt obligations were due.
Financial literacy for me, provided a pathway out of poverty. Financial literacy can help individuals reach their goals. By a better understanding of how to budget, save, and invest money, people can create plans that set expectations, and hold them accountable for their finances.

relevant show’s slogan is… “Where the Bible Meets Current Events.” The creator Dan Smith, came up with the idea of bridging the bible study with current events that are relative to today’s smart and savvy Christian viewers that look at the world from a biblical perspective but not insulting their intelligence with just…do as I say. The creator believed that the bible is more relevant and applicable in today’s society than ever before and Christian’s can walk and chew gum at the same time without getting offended or canceled based on their views and opinions. DanSmith,
Quad Squad Creator (Quadsquad249@gmail.com)My Best Life, I realize that positioning myself, my brand and life to be considered for a possible connection and/or collaboration is critical to the goals that I have for my life. I don’t say this lightly but Envision Radio and Magazine has put me in places and spaces for consideration that I wouldn’t have imagined. I am eternally grateful. Whether the consideration and connection are to listen to my shows on Sundays or Tuesdays on a regular basis, I am still grateful. I tell my clients that people may consider you for a long time before they ever make connections or attempt to collaborate. I have labeled this the observation season. This season could last for weeks, months or in some cases, years before they reach out, have a conversation, send
an email or sign a contract. Who you connect with can literally change your entire life in an instant. I realize that some of you reading this may not believe it but I don’t have enough time or space to tell you all of the people that I have met that literally changed the course and direction of my life. But like me, you may have people that you need to make connection with and collaborate with to take your brand and life to the next level. A few things to consider:
Be Prayerful. God’s discernment is incredible and He will speak verbally, through others or a spiritual imprint will indicate the level of involvement with people.
The Goal. Make sure that you both have the same goal, can agree on how
to reach the goal and when the goal is reached, what happens next?
The Agreement. Can we agree? Can we get the job done even if we disagree on the method, direction or redirection of the goal? Additionally, an agreement in writing is always good.
The Season. Determine what season you, your life and your brand are in before connecting it to another person, business or brand. Are you the mentor or mentee in this relationship? Are they still learning or is there something that you need to learn?
What is their work ethic and brand reputation? Remember timing is everything. Some things, opportunities or connections may be good but occurring in the wrong season whether too early or too late.
Live Your Best Life but be careful to consider slowly before you make connections and/or collaborations in this season. Let’s go!

Herbs and spices are an essential part of cooking, adding flavor and aroma to dishes. While the terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct definitions and uses.
Herbs are the leaves, stems, or flowers of plants, often grown for culinary, medicinal, or aromatic purposes. Examples of herbs include basil, parsley, thyme, and rosemary. Herbs are often used fresh, although they can also be dried and used in cooking. They are typically added towards the end of the cooking process, as prolonged heating can cause them to lose their flavor.
Spices, on the other hand, are the seeds, roots, fruits, or bark of plants. Spices are often used in powdered form and can be used to add flavor, color, or aroma to dishes. Examples of spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, and ginger. Spices are often added at the beginning of the cooking process, as they need time to release their flavor.
While both herbs and spices can be used for culinary purposes, they are also
valued for their medicinal and cultural significance. For example, many herbs are known for their medicinal properties and have been used for centuries to treat various ailments. Some examples include chamomile for relaxation, echinacea for immune support, and peppermint for digestion.
In biblical times, herbs and spices were highly valued and often used in religious ceremonies and as offerings to God. In fact, many of the herbs and spices mentioned in the Bible, such as frankincense, myrrh, and cinnamon, are still used today for their cultural and religious significance.
Herbs and spices are also an important part of many cultural cuisines, adding unique flavors and aromas to dishes. For example, Indian cuisine is known for its use of spices such as cumin, coriander, and turmeric, while Italian cuisine often incorporates herbs such as basil, oregano, and thyme.

Because your payment history makes up approximately 35% of your credit score, a strong record of on-time payments is key. One missed payment could lower your score significantly. Stay on top of your credit card, loan, and utility bill deadlines, making at least the minimum payments. In some cases, you may have to make payment arrangements. If this is your situation, honor that arrangement.
Each time you apply for a new loan or a new credit card, your score drops. This is because it has been statistically proven that those acquiring more credit are a bigger lending risk than those who are not. The credit scoring programs are designed to distinguish rate shopping
from opening new credit. If you are shopping for a mortgage or loan, do it in a short, focused amount of time. If you request a copy of your own credit report, or if creditors are monitoring your account or looking at credit reports to make prescreened credit offers, these inquiries about your credit history are not counted as applications for credit.
The measure of your history is important. A short credit history may have a negative effect on your score, although it can be offset by positive factors, such as timely payments and low balances. Also closing an account will lower your credit score.
Large loans and maxed out credit cards are going to drag down your credit score. Try to keep a low debt-to-credit ratio, meaning that your credit card balances should be only a small fraction of your available credit. For instance, if you have a limit of $10,000, your revolving balance should stay well under $3,000. Credit bureaus look at both your total debt-to-credit ratio as well as the debt-to-credit ratio of each credit card, so do your best to maintain favorable ratios for both.
Note: If you “maxed” out your credit cards, this will affect your credit score negatively as well.
Many credit-scoring models consider the number and type of credit accounts you have. A mix of installment loans and credit cards may improve your score. However, too many finance company accounts or credit cards might hurt your score.

The best way for people to protect themselves amid the possibility of a tripledemic is to get the latest COVID-19 booster and a flu shot. So far, it looks like the flu vaccine this year is a good match to the strains of influenza virus currently circulating. There's no vaccine for RSV, but one could be on the horizon.
Even though most people will not experience severe symptoms with RSV and the flu, we have to be aware of others when we are sick. Even though it’s not COVID-19, you probably should not go to work and get your colleagues sick. You should make sure you are washing your hands and keeping your distance. Some experts have also continued to recommend masking and opening windows at indoor, crowded events, as well as taking a rapid COVID test before holiday gatherings.

Your brand is an essential part of your business, and it sets you apart from your competitors. Create a brand that reflects your business's values and personality, and establish your online presence. This includes creating a website, social media accounts, and other marketing material.
As your business grows, you may need to hire employees to help you manage the workload. This can include administrative staff, customer service personnel, or other specialized roles. Make sure you understand your legal obligations as an employer, and choose employees who share your values and work ethic.

In 2016, I had a revelation that forced me to change my outlook on my spiritual, emotional, and physical health. I embarked on a journey that included acquiring knowledge about plant-based diets; as well as learning about the power of herbalism from practitioners who resided in other countries. I was aspired to live a more healthy and happier life.
As I continued my journey; I realized that my aspiration also included a desire for helping others. My journey wasn’t, by far, the easiest. However, it was most definitely worth it.
I decided to change my eating habits in 2018. Regardless of what others saw on the outside, I was unhappy within myself. I carried my weight well, so it never appeared to others that I had any issues with my personal health. People would often tell me that I looked fine as they compared me to their own declining physical states.
Challenging myself is the best way for me to overcome obstacles; therefore, I utilized a challenge to begin my transition with my eating habits. I dived right into a 30-day challenge, that I created for myself. This challenge consisted of raw fruits, vegetables,1 gallon of water daily and sea moss products from my website.
It was only until, after my transition, that others were able to relate to my story. Via my own physical transformation; I was able to help motivate others to take care of their temple, love themselves, and eat healthy.
The million-dollar question is where should I put my money right now? Savings and money market accounts are paying very low interest rates, bonds are not keeping pace with inflation and stocks are extremely volatile right now.
If I listen to business news channels on Monday, they might say the climate is good for investors; and on Tuesday they are saying run for the hills! There seems to be very conviction regarding investments at this time.
The key thing to remember is that you are not investing for right now; you are investing for 5 plus years from now. When it comes to managing your money, it is critical that you establish your parameters of money placement.
In plain English, where are you investing your cash, your taxable brokerage account, your 40lk or your IRA. Is your cash in a checking account earning you nothing? Or is in savings, money markets or CD’s giving you a little bit of a yield on your dollars.
Is your brokerage account being used to hold one stock or mutual fund; or are you diversified into 5 or stocks, 3 or more mutual funds and at 2 exchange traded funds.
And are you just using the age-based fund in you qualified retirement account; or are you actively managing it by reviewing all the investment options available to you. I realize this can be a daunting task; but you don’t have to do it alone.
That’s were professional financial advisors come in. But you have to address this issue of where should I put my money.
A tried-and-true process for doing this is the bucket system.
Bucket One:
How much do you need for emergencies or cash reserves? These funds are not invested for high returns; these funds are held in cash management accounts for accessibility. Accounts like:
● Checking
● Savings
● Money Market accounts
● Short-term CD’s
And should be no more than 12 months’ worth of living expenses. Emergency and cash reserve accounts are usually fully taxable and have no withdrawal restrictions.
These accounts are not invested; they are saved.
Bucket Two:
What are your intermediate term growth goals? This is money that you are growing for a fixed time period usually 3 to 5 years; with a defined accumulation goal. Such as college savings, business start-up or investment real estate purchase.
You can be a little more growth oriented with these funds; but you should not take on very much risk because the time is short and the cash out date is clearly defined. A good place to consider investing this money is:
● iBonds
● Short-term corporate bonds
● Diversified exchange traded funds
● Blue chip value growth-oriented index funds
Bucket Three:
Long-term goals are the most common investment goals, and the granddaddy of them all is retirement. This is where you want to take a more risk for the opportunity for more gains. However, just remember that risk you take must risk that you are comfortable with. When investing for your long-term goals like retirement, it is important that you know what rate of return you need to accomplish your goal based on the amount of money you can invest and the amount
of time you can let your investments work for you.
The bottom line is exactly what your parents and grandparents have always told you; don’t put all your eggs in one basket. And make sure you are watching your eggs!
Until next time keep building wealth
Peace
6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.
Team Lewis did something different for vacation last Spring. We decided we would spend the week in Louisville, Kentucky. For our 14-year-old daughter, it was a trip of discovery. For me, it was a time to reconnect with the city. The first stop was the Frazier History Museum. The authentic narratives of the "West of Ninth" exhibition triggered many childhood memories.
As a child, our summer vacations were always in Louisville visiting my great aunts
Aunt Leola Estill who lived on West Madison Street and Aunt Ethel Kennedy who lived on 7th Street. Aunt Leola was a long-time member of Asbury Chapel AME Church and Aunt Ethel belonged to Youngs Chapel AME Church. A third aunt, Aunt Gladys Schafer, was a member of Quinn Chapel AME Church. She died before I was born, but was known as my affluent, "fabulous" aunt. Being raised AME meant that we were a "connectional" church.
Anytime we visited a Louisville AME church, everyone knew we were Ms. Estill's or Ms. Kennedy's kinfolk. It was a badge of honor. These three Creth sisters had picked up their Versailles, Kentucky roots and replanted them in Louisville starting new lives with their mates.
I never knew my aunts' husbands. I only heard the stories about Uncle Eefe, my Aunt Leola's husband. He died in 1969, five years before I was born. I asked my mom once, "Why did the three of them move to
Louisville?" She said, "It was for the jobs. Their husbands could find good employment."
I found the Courier-Journal obituary records on my great uncle, Ephraim Estill, who hailed from Winchester, Kentucky. I discovered he was a veteran of World War II and a retired employee of the Schenley Distillery where he had worked for 30 years.
I asked my husband to drive me by Aunt Leola's old house. My mother rattled off her address as if it was yesterday when we last visited. In reality, it's been 35 years. When I looked at the house, I realized how
small it seemed now to me as an adult, but how it felt like a mansion in my youth. She kept it pristine both inside and outside. It was a story and a half, 2,078 square foot house built in 1900. She had a renter who lived in the upstairs
quarters. The main door was the entrance for both homes, but my aunt had a separate door to her space. The tenant had his own entry door at the top of the stairs. We were never allowed to touch one step of that staircase. Aunt Leola also owned the house to the immediate right of hers. I couldn't believe her house was still standing in Russell neighborhood. Time has worn it down, but the memories came back to me about how much pride my aunts had in their Louisville communities and churches.
While driving through the West End, I recalled being in a parade 27 years ago that began at the Kroger on West Broadway and ended at Shawnee Park. As the 1996 Kentucky Derby Festival Queen I felt honored to represent such a great source of pride for my people.
I wasn't a native of Louisville, but nobody could tell me that or the numerous African-American children who smiled and waved at me with approval and admiration. It was the only time I remember my dad letting us take his Trans Am out of town. After all, I was a Queen, I needed to be in what was known as "The Sunroof Car".
The final excursion for Spring Break week was to the Roots 101 African-American museum, exhibiting artifacts from slavery through the 2020 Black Lives Protests. The Black to the Future space spotlighted the work of today's youth who are the future leaders of the city. We were all impressed by the level of creativity in the room, especially since our daughter is a budding artist.
As executive director of Louisville Literary Arts, now celebrating two years with the organization, my desire is to connect with Louisville's traditional urban neighborhoods that really and
truly are the heartbeat of the city. I want to help tell their narratives in their own voices, realizing that what is seen on the outside is never the real story...the whole story...the intimate, inside view. It's imperative to shape the gifts and talents of its youth that are often buried under the "news" and the trauma that these neighborhoods have seen in recent years, particularly with the deaths of Breonna Taylor and David McAtee.
With these precious memories I have of my youth, now placed in their rightful context and with recent national events in mind, I would encourage others to visit these sites and enjoy the rich history lessons they teach about Louisville and Kentucky, one exhibit at a time. It's every Kentuckian history.

Prayer is communication, usually in the form of petition for something desired of God. The Bible is clear that Believers should always pray and never stop (Luke 18:1). The questions is, what is an answered prayer?
One example of answered prayer is when the church prayed for Peter and as they prayed, he received a miraculous release (Acts 12). Some who were praying were shocked at the results. Could this be a blueprint for answered prayers? The Bible concludes that it is the “fervent prayers of the righteous that avails much” (James 5:16b). But, what about others who prayed, believed, and were not delivered the same? Were their prayers unanswered?
Another example of answered prayer is found when Jesus prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me…” (Luke 22:42a). This was Jesus’ initial desire, and he spoke openly to God with a simple petition. However, the later part of his prayer reveals a surrendered heart, he continued in prayer: “…yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42b). His greatest desire was to do the will of the Father above his own.
Personally, I’ve prayed for many people and things and the results varied. Results are measurable. I wanted desperately to see God move, and in many ways, I did. I expected exactly what I had asked to be granted. Truthfully, that was not always the case. It was only later I understood that I measured the wrong thing. What to measure is the real question. Do we measure answered prayers by our desires or His desires? Answered prayer should not be measured by the results that we desire alone, rather, measured by the desires of God.
Have them gather all the food and grain of these good years into the royal storehouses, and store it away
- Genesis 41:35
What is your vision? A vision is bigger than a goal or an objective. For example, an objective is to get out of debt. A goal might be to pay your kids to go to college. However, a vision is the greater umbrella in which your goals and objectives fall under, through specific strategies that support the vision. The Germans call it Weltanschauung - the big picture.
Again, I ask, what is your vision? Where do you want to be in 5, 10, 20 years from now? Why do you think you have to wait until you are 65 years old to retire?
I have an aunt that retired at the age of 43. She was a schoolteacher for 22 years. She did not have the age or the years to retire from the school system.
So, how did she retire at the age of 43?
have four of the homes rented. They live off the rental income and military retirement pay. Do you know how disciplined you must be to pay off five houses in 20 years? Most of us will not
pay off the house we live in, in 20 years, much less four other houses.
Nevertheless, they were able to do that by not wasting money. They took one vacation, four short trips and minimized eating out each year. They set a budget each month and stuck to it. They sacrificed then so they can live free now!! Now, they travel the world, without a care in the world.
In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.
- Proverbs 21:20Here is a quick formula to determine how much income you will need to retire:
● Write down the monthly income that you think you will need to retire comfortably.
● Write down the secure sources of retirement income you have already put away.
● Subtract the amount that you think you will need.
● This number will provide you with the additional income that you are going to need to retire.
An example of a vision is financial freedom. The capacity to have your assets generate enough cash flow to maintain a superior standard of living that supports the optimal life you want to live forever.
Plan ahead…it wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark

AnonymousWealth and riches are part of the salvation package. When you gave your life to Christ and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you positioned yourself to receive from the Spirit of God. When you get God, you get all that He is, and everything for which He stands.
- Bobby HiltonI believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
- Martin Luther King JrSuggestion: Sit down with your spouse and determine at what age you would like to retire. Put a plan together and stick to it. If you are single, the only person that has to agree is you. Set your savings on auto drive and take off…

A stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency brought on by the sudden cessation or decrease in blood supply to a portion of the brain. Long-term impairment or death may be the outcome (Hall, 2020). Strokes may occur at any age but are more prevalent in the elderly and those with particular risk factors.
I learned that regardless of age, anybody is vulnerable to a stroke because I had one (Hall, 2020). A stroke hit me at 46 and completely altered my life course. However, I did not give up, and I am a stroke survivor now and want to inspire others to do the same.
Ischemic strokes are more common in patients with disorders that make their blood clot faster (coagulate). Inherited coagulation issues might be identified using a blood test (Dichgans et al., 2019). Thus, see your physician about testing and treatments for blood clots if you or a loved one has developed them.
Recognizing the mental and physical difficulties involved in overcoming a stroke's aftereffects critical. Many stroke survivors, however, may make substantial improvements in their rehabilitation with time, effort, and assistance (Hall, 2020).
Recounting the successes of other stroke patients who have fully recovered is one method to inspire (Hall, 2020). Hearing the stories of others who have triumphed against
● High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, and diabetes contribute to an increased risk of stroke in people with diabetes.
● Cigarette smoking raises the probability of developing a blood clot, which raises the probability of stroke.
● High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are all risk factors for stroke, and being overweight or obese enhances the likelihood of developing these conditions.
● Inactivity: Being overweight, having high blood pressure, and having high cholesterol all increase one's chance of stroke.
Stroke symptoms may differ depending on which brain area is damaged (Soto-Cámara et al., 2020). Common stroke warning symptoms include:
● Weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, usually on one side of the body, might develop suddenly.
● Confusion, difficulty communicating, or difficulty understanding others suddenly emerge.
● I was having sudden difficulty seeing out of one or both eyes.
● Problems with walking, dizziness, and incoordination come on suddenly.
● An unexpectedly intense headache for no apparent reason.
● If you develop any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek quick medical assistance. Your prognosis and likelihood of recovery both improve with prompt medical attention.
Get checked out if you are showing symptoms that might point to a stroke. If you get medical help quickly, strokes may often be avoided (Soto-Cámara et al., 2020). Maintain a schedule of frequent exams and take preventative measures. Following these recommendations may reduce your risk of stroke at any age.
Stroke recovery is a process, not an endpoint, and that is something you must keep in mind if you are a survivor of this disease (Hall, 2020). The road to recovery may be long and winding.
However, it is possible to enhance one's quality of life and sense of autonomy with the help of professional care and compassionate loved ones.
Successful rehabilitation after a stroke is essential. Regaining your strength, mobility, and communication abilities after a stroke may need a combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapy (Le Danseur, 2020). A rehabilitation program tailored to your specific requirements and desired outcomes will be developed in collaboration with your healthcare team.
Stroke victims should also control risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes (Hall, 2020). To assist you in dealing with these illnesses, your healthcare team may prescribe medicine or suggest modifications to your lifestyle.
It is crucial to have a solid network of loved ones to lean on while you heal and receive professional medical care (Hall, 2020). This might be other stroke survivors, friends, family, or a combination. They can encourage you and keep you upbeat while you are healing emotionally.
The stroke left me feeling quite frail and wobbly on my feet. Scarily, I also had a strong headache and difficulties speaking. That is why it is crucial to learn to detect warning signals; in my case, I felt something was wrong but could not put my finger on it.
I had a stroke and faced numerous obstacles but refused to give up (Hall, 2020). I want to motivate people to put in the same effort I did to restore my power and autonomy. Although recovery after a stroke is challenging, it is achievable with the right attitude and determination.
Throughout my healing time, I discovered the
value of having a support system around you. To have loved ones close by cheer me on and inspire me was crucial. Those people believed in me and encouraged me to continue (Le Danseur, 2020). I hope you will reach out to your loved ones for encouragement if you or someone you know is recovering from a stroke.
Rehabilitating after suffering a stroke is also crucial. Stroke sufferers might benefit from rehabilitation to rehabilitate their motor and cognitive skills lost due to the disease (Le Danseur, 2020). Physical treatment, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychotherapy are all examples. While these treatments may be difficult, they are necessary for a full and lasting recovery. I strongly suggest enrolling in a rehabilitation program if you or a loved one has just had a stroke.
While getting well after a stroke may be a lengthy and difficult journey, keeping a good outlook and working through the difficulties may help you get there faster. It is easy to lose hope, but remember that even the smallest
accomplishment is worthwhile (Le Danseur, 2020). Regaining any function, even the little ones like walking, talking, or smiling, are all causes for celebration.
In conclusion, a stroke may occur at any age, but the difference is made by quickly identifying the warning signals and getting medical help. It is not simple, but surviving a stroke is doable, and I urge everyone to keep their spirits up and fight. It is possible to overcome any obstacle with the help of loved ones, therapeutic programs, and a determined spirit. Do not give up hope for a brighter future; today is not your last. Stroke survivors might be encouraged to continue their rehabilitation by hearing inspiring tales, learning about others' experiences, and being encouraged to reach out for assistance.
