INTRODUCTION

I never thought I would have had to add so many new lines to previous edition of the Mello Boulder guidebook, printed only five years ago. Since then, hundreds of new boulders have been discovered, cleaned, and climbed. It's been hard work, but the undying passion of a select few people has given life to new sectors and new lines which are now accessible to everyone. In particular, the upper band of the Visido sector has been further explored and you can now climb on breath-taking new boulders. During the lockdown of 2020, numerous boulders above the town of San Martino were also cleaned, and dozens of other new lines were developed throughout the various sectors found in this guide. On top of all the new additions, there are even more promising areas still being explored, but that's another story. In recent years, a new generation of climbers has been raising the bar to the point where we not only have new climbs but many of them are cutting edge problems, with a few even brushing the 8c Font grade. This adds the final voice to the claim that the Valley offers boulders for all tastes and abilities.

When it comes to this guidebook, we have maintained the previous edition’s style and format, once again including detailed breakdowns of some of the most famous lines and interviews with the main protagonists behind the development of bouldering in the Valley.

I hope this guide also serves as extra motivation for those who wish to search for, clean, and climb new and amazing lines that have yet to be discovered. In this fifth edition, the detailed descriptions of lines haven’t changed, and where necessary, starting holds are indicated on the photos and diagrams with two little red hands. In some cases, an additional photo has been used to illustrate the starting holds, making it impossible to go wrong!

Next to the descriptions of many of the boulders you can find a QR code that will lead you to a video clip of the boulder, expanding the guides scope into the world of multimedia. This new feature allows you to see beta, height, number of recommended pads, and all the extra little bits of information that are not easily obtained through a simple photo and diagram.

The information contained in the guide will help you become more familiar with the various sectors, approaches, and boulders so that you too will be able to say you've been bouldering in the "Valley", which is how the locals refer to bouldering in Val Masino.

The Valley has not always been as it is today, with its numerous boulders to choose from, all of which developed with care, many safe and comfortable landings, and well-maintained approaches. Everything you find in the following pages is the product of long and painstaking work carried out over the years by passionate climbers who love the Valley and are proud to share it with not only those who come to climb but also those who are capable of preserving and understanding its fragile beauty. As mentioned, behind each line is a lot of work. Take care of boulders as those who cleaned and climbed them for the first time did, clean away any moss that may form over time and always brush chalk off the rock once you’re done. Show respect for both for the holds, which must never be chipped or improved, and for the meadows, paths, and woods where you mustn’t leave behind tape or toilet paper, wehter you used it to dry holds or...

This guide will inevitably lead to more people coming to climb here so let's try and use it intelligently so that those who come to the Valley can experience the same emotions that those who came before felt. Be curious, try some of the lesser known boulders, and don’t be scared of walking a few extra minutes, it’ll definitely be worth it!

QR Code

The QuickResponse Code (QR Code) is a type of 2Dimensional bar code, where information is stored in a square image.

It is used to memorise more detailed information that can be read using a mobile phone or smartphone.

Qr Codes can contain either web pages, texts or telephone numbers. In our case they have been used to direct the users of the guidebook towards videos of people climbing specific lines and published on YouTube or for GPS parking coordinates and the coordinates of boulders, which can then be reached using Google Maps.

They are useable with any mobile phone or smartphone that has a QR Code reader, which can be downloaded easily and for free. Different phones use different apps and they are almost always free.

Once you have downloaded the QR reader, all you have to do is open the App. and take a picture of the QR code with your phone. This will automatically start up either the video player or the open up a map and navigation App.

LOGISTICS

Access

The Valmasino valley was born as a land of pastors and farmers, only to become a destination for tourists looking for hot springs and alpinism, firstly for foreigners and then, as of the 19th century, also Italians. Arriving from the Italian motorways (from Milan) you first pass through Lecco and the drive along the Strada Statale n. 36 dello Spluga, when you reach Colico you then take the new Strada Statale n. 38 dello Stelvio that passes Morbegno thanks to two new tunnels and brings to the roundabout just after the town of Talamona where you re-join the old road and follow directions for Sondrio for 1km to the town of Ardenno. From here you take the road that leads to Valmasino. On the other hand, arriving from the Northern parts of Europe, you arrive at Colico and then drive onto Valmasimo, taking the Spluga mountain pass road. When this is shut it is better to drive on the Como-Chiasso road and enter Italy through this route, then passing by Lecco and taking the SS36. For those arriving from Northern Europe to enter Valtellina you can cross the Inn valley and enter through the Bernina Pass that leads to the town of Tirano, from which you can drive towards Sondrio, then Ardenno and finally Valmasino.

You can also reach the Valtellina valley from the Resia and Stelvio mountain passes.

The roads in the Valtellina region are well maintained and free-flowing, even if in peak tourist season you can experience delays when crossing the main towns.

Logistical tips

The Valmasino valley is a tourist destination that sees a peak in affluence during the summer months as well as in spring and autumn. In these periods you will find open hotels, B&Bs and camp grounds. If you come climbing in the winter make sure you enquire about the snow conditions beforehand. Most tourist spots are open all year, with some exceptions in winter. In any case you will have no problem finding lodging all year round.

ADVICE FOR USE

In Val Masino there are numerous rock faces. With the retreat of glaciers, that up until 10,000 years ago covered the entire Valtellina valley floor, many of these faces crumbled leaving numerous boulders that then had to wait for thousands of years before they became an object of consideration for people seeking to have a good time by climbing them.

Bouldering as an activity plays on the innate curiosity that lies in each one of us. Every climber sees every single piece of rock differently and hence it is difficult to distinguish an objective difference between a very small boulder and a one-and-a-half-meter piece of rock; or to distinguish between a highball and a free-solo. With regards to highballs, for some of the lines presented in this book it would be safer to call them free-solo routes.

It is therefore down to the taste and courage of each climber to decide whether to climb these routes or not. In the guidebook we have attempted to cover the majority of boulders present in Valmasino. You will therefore find boulders of all difficulties and styles. You will find many lines that are graded easier than 6a, therefore ideal for beginners. You will also find the hardest problems that have been climbed by the world’s top boulderers. An aspect, that for some is by no means secondary, is the name of the lines. Where possible, we have tried to give a name to everything, both boulders and their individual lines. It is obviously more satisfying to be able to talk with one’s friends about having climbed “that” line rather than “a” line. Personally, I appreciate boulders that have a specific identity! In this guide all lines are photographed, described and graded. Let’s hope that this acts as a stimulus for exploring new areas and opening ever more beautiful and motivating lines. Obviously, we trust that the makeup of lines remains as we have found them. It is forbidden to chip or change holds on existing and already cleaned boulders.

The use of steel brushes is only permitted for the removal of moss on new lines that are being cleaned or existing boulders that in time have been taken over by moss; whereas for those that are climbable it is enough to use a normal toothbrush with plastic or natural bristles. On a separate note, let’s address the use of chalk: it is a good habit to clean holds after you have done climbing on them and erasing tickmarks used to identify holds.

GRADES

Grades are always a hard topic to address, especially in bouldering when numerous factors come into play. The ideal case would be to not care and just climb for the pure pleasure of it. However, seeing as climbers take grades terribly seriously, it is worth giving some explanations. In this guidebook we have used the common Font grading system, in an attempt to homogenise as much as possible, the grades of the various sectors.

It will of course be possible to find big discrepancies between two identical grades even within the same bouldering area; this could be down to many factors such as the height of the climber, particular predispositions for styles of climbing (it is common for boulderers to say “this line just doesn’t fit my style”) and different types of beta used to solve problems, etc.

The grades given to boulders were assigned:

- When climbing in optimal conditions. Therefore if you find a friction dependant problem on slopers and try it on a misty day at the end of august, with mosquitos flying about, it will definitely seem a lot harder than if you were there in January with a nice cold breeze;

- When climbing with the best available beta. This is down to the good boulderer to discover (unless described in the guidebook or visible with a video);

- Taking into consideration the ideal morphology for the ascent. For example, if there is a move that favours taller climbers, we have given the grade that the tall climber would give. If someone who is short then tries the boulder, either he sticks with it or moves on to a different problem;

- Not taking into consideration the height of the boulder. In the case of very high boulders and even highballs the grade given does not take into consideration at what height the moves are attempted. Some of the lines in this guidebook have never been repeated; you could find different solutions for solving them and some could become easier. This is part of the beauty!

Due to the difficulty in grading some of the lines, whose difficulty still hasn’t been properly confirmed, in some cases we haven’t assigned a definitive grade (eg 7b) but rather we have given a range (eg 7a+/7b). In any case the grade is to be taken as an indication and not a dogma. It would be easier to just apply the “I climbed it or I didn’t climb it” approach, yet we know that climbing a 7c+ is less satisfying than doing an 8a.

BASSA VALMASINO

The Ponte del Baffo and Cataeggio sectors are the first you come across when driving on the road from Ardenno to S. Martino. The Ponte del Baffo area is made up of two sectors: the first is found along the Masino stream, the second on a terrace that offers a nice panoramic view of the narrow and thickly forested lower Valmasino valley.

On the other hand, the Cataeggio sector is found along the woods directly above the town that gives it its name. Both sectors are characterised by exceptional rock (gneiss at Ponte del Baffo and serizzo

in Cataeggio). Unfortunately, they both get a lot less climbers compared to the more renowned sectors of the Valley, and therefore some of the boulders can become overgrown with moss or the trails slightly harder to find. This should not discourage you! Rather, I recommend you bring a steel brush and a saw, so as to clear possible vegetation found along the trails or on the boulders.

ACCESS

From Ardenno pass the Adda bridge and follow the strada provinciale 404 road that leads to Valmasino, until you reach the Ponte del Baffo locality. Here, if you turn right towards Cevo you will arrive at the higher Ponte del Baffo Superiore sector, whereas if you proceed on the main road after about 500m you will arrive at the Ponte del Baffo sector. If you follow on from here after a few minutes you will arrive at Cataeggio where you can find the boulders of the Cataeggio sector.

Ponte del Baffo, in the lower Valmasino valley, is part of the nearby municipality of Civo. Compared to the multitude of boulders in the rest of the Valley it can be considered an appetiser. Even if there aren’t that many boulders, they are generally of a very high quality. Some problems are absolutely not to be missed and the rock doesn’t wear out your skin. In addition, due to the low altitude, this is a good alternative when the snow stops you from climbing at Remenno or in Val di Mello. In the Fiume sector, don’t miss Gica, Bad Ass, Studio Line and Biancograt

The Settore Superiore (higher sector) is very panoramic and, even if the base of the boulders isn’t that comfortable, it has some top-class problems. Make sure you climb: In nome della rosa, Il primo e l’ultimo dei quattro, L’uomo di Leonardo and Solid edge. Extreme projects on perfect rock are waiting for top boulderers.

APPROACH FOR PONTE DEL BAFFO

From Morbegno follow the Statale 38 dello Stelvio for about 7,5 km. At Ardenno cross the bridge on the river Adda and follow the 404 Road into Valmasino. APPROACH FOR PONTE DEL BAFFO SUPERIORE

From Morbegno follow the Statale 38 dello Stelvio for about 7,5 km. At Ardenno cross the bridge on the river Adda and follow the 404 Road into Valmasino. After a first series of hairpins, when the road gets less steep, at “Ponte del Baffo” you go past a bridge on the left. Continue climbing on the road until you reach Cevo. Take the last road on the right at the end of the houses, by a cement wall. After about 70 m take the second little road on the left that immediately becomes a dirt road. Follow it to its end (500 m) and park where possible, near to the hydroelectric power station. You need a VASP permit that can be obtained from the Civo town office at the cost of 5€ per day. Alternativley, it’s an extra five minute walk. From here follow the path that crosses the river and after about 50 m, at a junction, take the level path continuing straight on. In 7 minutes you will arrive at boulder 1 and after a further 7 minutes you arrive at the main bouldering area. From the Ponte del Baffo Settore Fiume (river sector) climb very steeply in the woods for about 10 minutes to reach the boulders. This is not the best way to approach if you only want to climb at Baffo Superiore, but works well if you want to climb at both sectors in the same day.

Extremely vast sector where, every year, new and not to be missed problems are developed. The style is mainly physical, steep climbing, especially on the most recent lines. The area is pleasant and the easy lines will please everyone. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this area is much quieter than the nearby Sasso Remenno, especially during weekends.

APPROACH

Park in the lay-by with a fence and tables, about 250 m before the Sasso Remenno. In one minutes walk you will reach the boulders

PILASTRI DEL PESGUNFI

Sector discovered and developed for Melloblocco® 2011. The rock is fine-grained, and much less abrasive than that of the nearby La Mota sector. The problems are of a very high quality and you can climb here for a long time before your skin gets worn out. Furthermore, here there are grades for everyone with some gems you really have to try.

APPROACH

Park at the big parking lot just before the village of S. Martino. Walk for about 8 minutes towards the Sasso Remenno, to arrive at a small chapel where you take a path on the right that leads into the woods and soon leads to the boulders. About 650 m from the car park. Alternatively, you can park a few metres before the little chapel on a dirt road. Not very easy parking. Leave room for farming vehicles to pass.

MEGALODONTE 8C

Megalodonte is a climb in the Campo Sportivo sector. A true endurance test piece, twenty moves that link an 8B and an 8A+ without any rest in-between. It seems like the usual love story, but it's a climb that truly kept my dreams alive. Since the very first editions of this guide the line was reported as a “Project, Ondra's project, possible 8c”.

As a kid, flipping through the guidebook in search of the next 6c/7a climbs to try, I turned the page and wondered how extreme and what kind of holds could repel Adam Ondra! Years later, with more experience and awareness, I gathered the courage to lay my hands on it for the first time. The holds were indeed very bad, perhaps even worse than I expected! But after cleaning off the moss and cobwebs, I started to put together the moves and climbed the two independent lines: Crazy Snake 8b and Snake’s Bite 8a+. Linking these two lines make up Megalodonte. Having sent the two independent lines it felt natural to wonder: what if Ondra's project were possible? And so, for the 2020/2021 season, I dedicated myself entirely to

trying to connect the two climbs. On a fresh April day, everything went smoothly, and on the first attempt of the day, without even realizing it, I found myself topping out the boulder. Surely one of the greatest thrills I have experienced thus far and a turning point in my life as a boulderer. My first 8c and my proudest First Ascent.

For the nerds:

Megalodonte starts from two flat holds that wrap around the 70° prow of the boulder. After a first move with the right hand to a pinch, you face the climb’s initial crux: a super elusive and precarious heel hook on a small flat hold to the left. From here, keep slapping left and right up the magnificent prow until you reach the start hold of the 8a+ – which is a stand start line when climbed independently. At that point, you enter the second crux which involves a big flag move while holding onto an undercling and a sloper, with one foot pivoting on a small crystal. Another slap to the final flat holds, and traverse right to exit.

The ERSAF (Ente Regionale per i Servizi all’Agricoltura e alle Foreste), working together with the Alpine guides from Valmasino, cleaned the most westerly boulders while Maspes, with the locals Max and Eleonora Fiorelli, Rudi Colli and others, have developed the boulders in the forest. For the Lombardy Alpine Guide’s event Mellokids, the guides together with the kids cleaned numerous boulders that aren’t too high or too hard, and therefore suitable for children and beginners. They are easily found around Boulder 1.

This sector, compared to “Belvedere”, has flatter landings and the boulders are all close together. This is a very pleasant place even for the non-boulderers. In the height of summer, you can climb and then have a nice swim in the nearby river!

In addition, the boulder problems’ finishes are generally lower than in the nearby sector and there are lots of medium-easy grades. Remember to check the ways down from the boulders before you start climbing!

APPROACH

From San Martino Valmasino continue for about 4,5 km to the Bagni Masino, park in the first lay-by on the left before the buildings of the pools. Don’t park here as you will be sure to receive a fine. Climb up a steep dirt road which comes out onto a broad meadow where you see the enormous boulder with the winding crack (n°22).
