As technology advances and watching and creating videos continues to be a part of our daily existence, Eastminster’s Worship & Music Ministry along with Communications, con tinued to focus on and expand our newest platform for “Sharing Stories,” through moving pictures and enthusiastic voices, during key worship services in 2019. That platform is a screen - in the sanctuary or Thompson Hall - where stories of faith and grace are projected for you and me, taking us to mission fields near and far via video. Trips are brought to life - highlighting those who traveled as well as those who were helpedinspiring others to “go out” into the world. Other videos tell the story of a family’s commit ment to stewardship even as they learn of new family challenges and how God’s grace has been the silver lining.

There are many stories to share about Eastminster. With direction from our pastoral staff and members of the Eastminster family, stories are identified or pointed out to communica tions about a particular faith journey or a call to SERVE. Sometimes we receive the occa sional manna, especially from EPC Youth, consisting of spontaneous footage of fellowship and fun in our community, or sometimes from faraway mission fields. Whether we film onsite or from afar, we are excited to continue sharing these stories, which are quick “glimpses” into ministries that some may have not experienced before...It’s also a way to get to know more about your EPC family. Stretching oneself is an individual goal and activity that looks different for each person.

- Excerpt

Of the 250 adults registered, 21 percent were non-EPC members, and 42 of the total were not previously active users of the CLC and requested to join. The CORE Retreat also kicked off the six-week Lenten season, during which time EPC’s sermons, Daily Devotionals and additional nighttime classes honed in on scripture from Mark 12:30, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart… soul… mind… and strength.”

HIGHLIGHT: THE FIRST ANNUAL CORE RETREAT

The purpose of the CORE Retreat was two-fold: to reach out to neighbors and other non-members, and to encourage all participants to practice loving God with their whole selves. That may mean taking better care of the “temples of the Holy Spirit”--meaning our bodies-(1 Cor 6:19) by eating healthier or committing to physical activity. That may mean learning to put aside the things that weigh us down in our minds and work toward more gratefulness and less anxiety. That may mean dedicating a part of every day for Bible study or spending more time in prayer.

This first-time retreat attracted 250 adult registrants, who chose among 43 class offerings in the areas of fitness, mental health, spiritual disciplines and nutrition. Over 30 children also attended-many who enjoyed the KidCore healthy eating, kid yoga and pottery classes. It was truly an inspirational event for anyone of any age.

Eastminster Today June-July 2019 A Whole-Health Retreat for MIND, BODY & SOUL

One non-member participant said, “The whole theme-- combining exercise with the spirtual-- just perfect! Good balance of both and class offerings. This retreat has been such an encouragement, and as I am looking at churches to attend, this was a great way to get acquainted with EPC.”

And an EPC member said it best: “It broke through barriers for the participants. The exercise compo nent, especially during the [general] session, I would think was a big barrier for us Presbyterians to get us out of our shells.” from

September 7&8, 2019: CELEBRATION SUNDAY WEEKEND

Highlight: Taiwanese Pastor Visit

On Saturday, the group toured the State House, saw Christ Central (Footcare Ministry) Transitions (Third Thursday Ministry) and USC where they were met by Dr. Cher-Tsin Huang, USC Computer Professor, and Pastor Kunming Su, Taiwanese Christian. (They even experienced Chick fil-A for lunch!) They then returned to EPC to greet their host families, take a tour with Rev. Brian Marsh (top left p. 41), learn about the various ministries (church and day school), and eventually enjoy a covered dish dinner, attended by 100, with plenty for 200. You can tell by the photos on page 41 that cross-cultural connections were made, amidst fun and fellowship. The evening ended with what was described as a form of “Taiwanese line-dance” (2nd row, center, p. 41) around the three rooms in the CLC. Our Taiwanese friends in authentic costumes, wore expressions of joy.

On Sunday morning, we worshipped together in both contemporary (Jubilee) and traditional services, our guests performed special music from home after introductions were made by Rev. McCall. After wor ship, everyone headed over to the gym for a southern meal of fried (or baked) chicken, mac&cheese, green beans, salad, rolls and an assortment of cobblers. The group of pastors then headed back to the mountains of Montreat.

In 2019, Celebration Sunday was truly a Celebration Weekend, as 17 Taiwanese pastors traveled to the Carolinas with friend and Taiwan missionary, Rev. John McCall, to spend some time at Montreat and to experience an American church different than their previous visits to much larger churches in big cities like LA or Atlanta - They chose Eastminster, to both learn and share and visit with old friends.
